Now here's a dilemma. Jamie O'Neal, who arrived in Nashville by a circuitous route that wound through Australia and Las Vegas, could forge an entire career as a talented Jo Dee Messina/Faith Hill clone. "No More Protecting My Heart" sounds exactly like the kind of L.A. bubblegum that Messina virtually exercises to in her videos, and it's impossible not to conjure the image of Hill on the shimmering seduction of "Shiver." But here's where the dilemma starts. Though this album marks her debut, O'Neal is a fully realized performer with a Ferrari of a voice. She's also an arresting and original songwriter. Example: "There Is No Arizona," a resonant, almost disturbing tale of broken promises and love denied, set to a sultry blues. There's nothing else like it on country radio, but chances are, O'Neal has lots more offbeat gems stashed where that one came from. Will she follow the road less traveled or the guaranteed path to megawatt success? The next album tells the tale. --Alanna Nash

4 out of 5 stars Her Own Thing.......2007-07-22

Jamie O'Neal's debut album, Shiver, is most definitely about singing and vocals. The instruments and the notes they play are very much in a supportive role. I'm a bit surprised this album was characterized as a country CD, it doesn't have that feel to it very often. There is a distinct lack of "twang." A piano is heard more often than any other instrument. This album is unique, Jamie's own thing. Jamie sings very well, and the songs have good lyrics. The album as a whole just isn't lively enough for me to give it 5 stars. Fans of heartfelt, emotional singing may feel this is a 5, however. Decide for yourself. The songs:

When I Think About Angels
There is No Arizona - disappointment after guy's talk about starting a life in Arizona together turns out to be just talk.

No More Protecting My Heart - very lively and jubilant, kinda Billy Joel-like, one of the few faster ones.

She Hasn't Heard It Yet - marriage is dead, wife just hasn't quite realized it.

Rescued Me
Shiver - very heartfelt love tune

The Only Thing Wrong - a little more rhythm to this one

Sanctuary - faster song, is more like typical modern female country than preceding tunes

Frantic - frenetic tune about hubbub of modern life, a rare song not about love/relationships

Be With You - haunting closer tune

5 out of 5 stars Upbeat contemporary country.......2005-07-30

Jamie made a great start to her career with this album, which yielded a number one country hit although at one time it seemed that it would be her only album - the follow-up took five years to appear. On this album, the songs are generally upbeat. Jamie has a strong, powerful but well-controlled voice that sounds great on any type of song. Jamie co-wrote eight of the ten songs with a variety of co-writers.

The album opens with the upbeat When I think about angels, which suggests that Jamie is happy with life. It is followed by a classic tale of sadness, There is no Arizona, in which a woman (not Jamie) is promised a new life in Arizona by a man who goes there but never returns to take her there. The next song (Where we belong) is about a couple being strong despite disagreements. No more protecting my heart (the first of two songs not co-written by Jamie) is about a woman finding love for the first time having previously been fearful of love. Another sad song (She hasn't heard it yet) is about a woman who senses that her man is going to leave her but is somehow trying to delude herself that he's still interested in her.

The next two songs (You rescued me, Shiver) find Jamie returning to her main theme of being happily in love, but these are followed by two songs (The only thing wrong in my life, I'm still waiting - the latter is an original song, not a cover of the Diana Ross classic) in which the man who she loved so much has left her. Next is a great duet with Mark Wills (I'm not gonna do anything) - this is the second and last song that Jamie didn't co-write. Jamie returns again to her main theme of being happy in love with the next track (Sanctuary) while Janie uses the final track of the original (Frantic) to explain that likes to live life in the fast lane. A further track (To be with you) has since been added to the album. There is also a version of the album with a further bonus track (All by myself).

Jamie is a singer with a wonderful voice who should be a major star but isn't. If you are a contemporary country music fan, you should give Jamie a listen. With three sad song easily outnumbered by seven happy songs, this is an album that will bring some sunshine into your life.

5 out of 5 stars What a way to start!!.......2005-01-22

I, like many others, was turned on to Jamie O'Neal through her debut number 1 single "There is No Arizona." After becoming somewhat disillusioned with country music it was like a breath of fresh air. It was different and edgy..in country terms. It had a great feel and I loved the voice. I purchased the album and there are some standards on there as well as some realgroudbreaking stuff. I love the ttle track. The accompanying video wasnt so bad either. I found "To Be With You" also had a different feel from most country. Jamie is an incredible songwriter and she just shines vocally throughout the album. I eagerly await her new cd as it has taken so long for the true follow up(her shelved cd is out there too and it is great). Overall this is one of my favorite cds of the genre and a worthy purchase as it breathes new life into a genre that has been stagnant since the departure of Garth Brooks.

5 out of 5 stars Great debut album!.......2004-06-30

When Jamie O'Neal came onto the Nashville scene in 2000, I was blown away by her talent. I rushed out to buy her debut album SHIVER, and I still listen to it all the time. Unfortunately, her follow up album ON MY WAY TO YOU was never released, she left Mercury Records before it was released, but she's working on a new album for 2005 on Capitol Records.

The first single was the haunting "There Is No Arizona", a sad ballad about a woman who realizes she's been played the fool and lied to way too many times. It was an instant hit, as was the second single, the bubbly "When I Think About Angels". The title track was the third single, which is one of my favorite ballads on the disc. It's a great ballad with a good chorus. I also really like the ballad "I'm Still Waiting", a song about loss and waiting for someone to come back, even though they won't.

Other singles from the album included the duet with Mark Wills (who also used to be on Mercury Records but has since been dropped) "I Don't Wanna Do Anything Without You", and the uptempo "Frantic". She really proved herself as a songwriter, and a singer, so it's a shame that her career hit a bit of a bump.

There's some really nice ballads like "She Hasn't Heard It Yet", "You Rescued Me", and "To Be With You", which closes off the album, it's another haunting ballad that seems to unravel and draw you in. "Sanctuary" is a good uptempo song as well. Any of the songs on the disc could have been released as a single.

This is a great debut album. If you haven't heard of Jamie O'Neal yet, pick this album up! You won't be disapointed! I hope her next album brings her back into the spotlight.

5 out of 5 stars More Please!!.......2004-04-07

I am still waiting for Jamie to release her next album. This one cd was enough to make me a fan for life. I heard 'Shiver' on the radio a few times and thought "I have to hear more". So I got the cd and I am still amazed that a debut can be so good. I love every song on this album!! I am usually a fan of the sad songs and Jamie sings them with enough raw emotion to bring tears to my eyes. 'I'm Still Waiting', 'There is No Arizona', 'She Hasn't Heard It Yet', 'You Rescued Me' are my favorites. Be on the listen for Jamie's next album, this cd alone makes her credible in my eyes.

Having landed a guest spot on Moby's 18, these two Georgia girls may be in for more attention than they ever bargained for. Maria Taylor and Orenda Fink's sophomore album is all wispy voices and ethereal acoustic guitars, the kind of music made by sensitive souls who would probably have a nervous breakdown if ever approached by strangers for autographs. "It's funny how you can forget there is a world outside yourself / Where the trees keep growing and the cars keep moving," they sing breathlessly on "The Trees Keep Growing." The subject matter might seem ordinary--themes like optimism ("The New Year"), self-doubt ("How You Remember"), and lost love ("While I'm Still Young") figure prominently--but the dense, dark delivery is anything but. Moving at an unfeasibly languid pace and not once breaking the otherworldly spell with abrasive edges, songs like "Home" and "We Exchanged Words" go down like slow-melting lozenges for the heart. --Aidin Vaziri

5 out of 5 stars Less is more on Azure Ray's second album.......2002-05-12

While everyone is listening to Moby, one of the artists that he (Richard Melville Hall) puts on the stereo is Athens, Georgia experimental/chill/twee duo Azure Ray. They co-wrote and performed track 4, Great Escape, on Moby's 18, invited into a coterie along with Sinead O'Connor, Angie Stone, and MC Lyte -- Moby's other collaborators for his first LP in three years.

A month ago Azure Ray (multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Orenda Fink and keyboards player/vocalist Maria Taylor, both also in Now It's Overhead and previously in Little Red Rocket and Bright Eyes) released for the US their second full-length, Burn And Shiver, on Athens indie label Warm Electronic Recordings. It follows their November EP, out since January on Saddle Creek, and their debut, self-titled full length, released January 2001 on Warm.

Azure Ray make heavy-duty introspective dream music, boldly minimalist and anti-pop, quiet nearly to the point of disappearing into silence. In moments the new album's melodies and emotional colors touch the transcendency of Glasgow's Adventures In Stereo, who, like Azure Ray, make magic of multi-tracked, reverberant female vocals and elemental, repetitive themes.

Floating over synthetic bells, hints of percussion, strings, and acoustic guitar, Fink's and Taylor's lyrics hang in the air almost indecently personal (It's funny how you can forget there's a world outside yourself/ Where the one who loves you keeps on living/ Without you there). The album's an open diary on a bed illuminated by a shaft of light from the hall... you walk up to it quietly, hesitate, then pick it up. It's OK... she left it there... you know she trusts you and wants you to read it.

Azure Ray's minimalist and highly personal aesthetic, focused by producer Eric Bachmann (previously in Archers Of Loaf, now in his solo act, Crooked Fingers), reminds me a bit of the Cluster & Eno LP from way back in 1977. First exposure to that album left me wondering, in its time, whether the artists were just [messing] with me -- whether they arrogantly expected to get away with less studio and production time by proffering such extreme simplicity as 'art.' An open mind and a few more listens eventually paid off well back then, and does now.

The Cluster & Eno record remains timelessly beautiful in its minimalism and will forever. I predict the same to prove true of Burn And Shiver. (Review originally appeared on Rockbites.org)

5 out of 5 stars More like a Shiver down my spine!.......2007-07-21

Edison Glass is one of those bands that you dream about discovering. This is there first album and its good. They don't sound like anyone else that I'm aware of and they have a bit of reggae and punk/rock mix. This is an album that I will buy for friends.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-03-28

I can't believe my ears! Amazing Christian Music?!
Yes, amazing. From the thrashing rocker "My Fair One" - which I'm assuming is derived from Song of Solomon (Bible) - to the emotive (?) and wonderfully lengthy "When All We Have Is Taken/Comfort," I am thoroughly impressed. Hands down, one of the better offerings in newer Christian albums.
But to be honest, every artist on Credential Recordings is amazing. I think there's only like six or seven on that label right now (Edison Glass, Future of Forestry, Turn Off the Stars, Dizmas, Lost Ocean, maybe a few others), but they're all amazing in their own unique way.
Edison Glass probably takes the cake though. It's more like a toss up between them and Future of Forestry.

That's All.

4 out of 5 stars Catchy and Confident (4.5 stars).......2006-10-11

As Indie Rock has taken a spiraling turn over the past decade, different bands are getting much more experimental with their musical vibe. Circa Survive gets technical, Spill Canvas has supreme sing-along anthems, Ariel Kill Him is subtle to an addicting point, and now comes Edison Glass with hooks that make you choke and an unbelievable sense of timing that comes through in their music.

Just when you think they're going to bust into a sing-song chorus (typical with pop/rock bands), they come through with a sick guitar solo that has you listening over and over and over again. What makes Edison Glass different is they have a keen sense to avoid predictability. Also, they have catchy hooks that make you sing that same song in your head. The guitars are subtle enough to give an indie rock feel, and heavy enough to bob your head throughout their songs.

The best track on the album has to be "When All We Have is Taken/Comfort", the first time I heard this song, I instantly fell in love. "If I'm unable when you were calling, if I'm unable when all we have is taken..." is an unbelievably catchy verse. The amazing guitar work in this song is what really makes this song great, though. The guitar solo after the second chorus (about 3 minutes into the song) is one of the greatest dual guitar solos I've ever heard. I couldn't help but start the track over repeatedly until I was satisfied, but the great thing is that I'm not satisfied; I listen to this CD all the time, it's ridiculous. I also recommend the song "In Such a State".

The only reason I didn't give this release 5 stars is even in such a great album like this, some of the songs in the middle tend to get repetitive and slow down the pace a little bit. Other than that, "A Burn or a Shiver" is one of the best releases of 2006, and probably the best indie rock album this year in my opinion.

Rock on! Later!

3 out of 5 stars They've Got Potential.......2006-10-07

I'll admit it, Edison Glass's off the wall rythms and riffs will catch your ear (that isn't to say its catchy) and invite you to listen. I'd also venture to say that In Such a State is one of the best pop songs I've heard in a long time. But while that song is one of the strongest on the album, it's also what drags the record down. I was expecting experimental-tech rock. Most of the songs are low on guitar tone, and high on high-pitched, whiny vocals that get old after awhile, as they hit the same note over and over. "aaAAand suuunshiIIINE!"

So, while at times the mathrock is brilliant, repetitions, lack of meaty guitar tone, and equally redundant vocals keep this album from being great. However. There's a lot of potential here (check out the guitar solo on "When All We Have is Taken", "Starlight," "Honesty")...and I'll be buying the next album.

5 out of 5 stars A Sleeper Indie Rock Hit.......2006-06-11

I'm so glad I accidently stumbled upon Edison Glass. Out of complete accident one day I downloaded the song "Minutes for Memories" and instantly I fell in love. Bands usually only get one song to impressive me, and this NY based four piece did exactly that. If you're unfamiliar with their sound (which most likely you will be), Edison Glass plays an upbeat brand of indie rock, full of sing-along melodies, catchy rhythms and poignant lyrics. If this type of rock and roll suits you, then Edison Glass is probably the one band that you need to hear this year.

After the first seconds of "My Fair One" start rolling, most are going to be captivated by the band's sound. Right out the gate Edison Glass presents the listener with exactly what you want to hear; Excellent, catchy music. The guitars are tight, yet play together with a loose relationship, which makes none of the songs sound calculated or forced. There's a very free and vibrant mystique to the band's sound, and they can easily go from a slower, atmospheric piece like "Starlight" to an upbeat rocker "In Such A State". The drums dabble in all areas, and can range from steady rhythms to quite complicated patterns. The way the band tends to balance their sound though is also most impressive. As the listener you get just enough of all spectrums of the music to keep you entertained and interested the whole time.

"Forever", "In Such A State" and "Starlight" are the real stand outs to me, but the whole record in itself is an impressive collection of songs. For a 13 track record that clocks in at just over 54 minutes, it flows perfectly every step of the way. Having the cd take you through twists and turns is the most exciting part, as you can one minute be singing along with melodies of "Angelic In Heart", before being subdued by the more relaxed "Minutes for Memories". Elsewhere "My Fair One" and "The River" satisfy your rock needs, while the title track and "You Mean The World To Me" are both quieter, more emotional songs. Overall there isn't one bad song in the bunch, and if any one of the previously mentioned songs does anything for you, this is really a must purchase.

"A Burn Or A Shiver" just might be the best indie rock album to hit shelves all this year just judging from my immediate listen. That might be a bold statement, but just one listen to the magic and emotion that is Edison Glass and you might be feeling the same way. "A Burn Or A Shiver" is recommended to all fans of indie and rock in general. Everyone should find something about this release to appreciate. It may not be the most well known album on the market at the moment, but I'm pretty sure that Edison Glass won't take long to catch on with a lot of people. Absolutely an outstanding album.

Tall Tales and True crafted a great pop-rock album with Shiver. Highlights include Trust, Tinytown, Bridge, Hold On, Heart, Stranger On The Stair and the stunning closer, April. Any of these songs would have fit great on alternative radio, but somehow Shiver got lost in the shuffle.

4 out of 5 stars Faces and Beer, Beatles and garage.......2005-06-10

I first heard The Capitol Years when they were essentially a one-man operation with alt-country leanings, when I stumbled on the fantastic song, "Faces and Beer." Since then they've evolved into a fully realized band and released the blistering garage rock Jewelry Store EP, which found them losing their acoustic guitars in favor of raw, high energy, electric rock and roll. On Let Them Drink, they combine the best of their songcrafting instincts, letting their inner Beatles shine with a white, bright light, while keeping it raw, real, and rocking. Every incarnation of The Capitol Years is worth checking out if you are a fan of roots, garage, or pop rock, to be honest - they continue to prove themselves to be inspired in everything they do.

      5 out of 5 stars im hooked.......2005-05-25

I picked this one up 3 weeks ago and it hasen't left my player. The bass lines are amazing, the guitar riffs are some of the catchiest i've heard, and the vocals are perfect for screaming along with. If you like gettin' your socks rocked off then buy this one.

I bought this CD after hearing "Be Honest" on the radio. I love every song on it - the incredible harmonies and wonderful instrumental backgrounds. "You and I Belong" is so beautifully written, it quickly became a meaningful song for my boyfriend and me.
