After collaborations with Mos Def (1998's Black Star) and Hi-Tek (2000's Reflection Eternal), underground journeyman Talib Kweli finally emerges fully solo with Quality. As an MC, Kweli is still as incisive as ever--his distinctive, darting flow stabs its way across every song and, as one of hip-hop's better thinkers, he covers a wide range of moods and ideas. As a verbal ass-whupper, Kweli unloads on songs like "Rush," "Shock Body," and "Guerrilla Monsoon Rap" (featuring the Roots' Black Thought and Pharoahe Monch), but he takes things much further than just the lyricist's lounge. "Get By," produced beautifully by Kayne West, is the conscious hustler's anthem, while "Where Do We Go" muses on death as thoughtfully and introspectively as "Joy" (with Mos Def) delves into the wonders of birth. "The Proud" tackles American jingoism in a time of terror, providing a much needed dose of skepticism when patriotic sentimentalism has free reign. Though Kweli's thoughts are coherent throughout, Quality as a whole lacks a certain cohesion--there's no single guiding vision that glues all the pieces together, and the album's production-by-ensemble doesn't help. This is a solid album no question, but especially compared to ambitious contemporaneous concept albums by peers such as Common and the Roots, Quality feels unexpectedly conventional--a strong collection of songs in need of a unifying force. --Oliver Wang

Great CD for little ones!.......2007-07-29
I've boughts lots of so-so to terrible CDs for my baby. So, this one was a nice surprise. My daughter (10 month old) loves the music and so do my husband and I. Some of the songs aren't done in the traditional way, but that keeps it fresh.
Mommy, Daddy, & Daughter Love this CD.......2007-07-16
Our two-year old dances to the music and is learning the words to these songs. The voices and music are adorable, and the songs really come to life. The arrangements are catchy. I find myself, my husband, and my daughter singing or humming the songs all the time.
Fabulous.......2007-05-25
Great Music for Children. All the favorite songs we all remember and can sing along. Songs are done well. Children (and adults) all love this tape!
Great collection of favorites, sing along!.......2007-05-21
I love this album because it's chock full of childhood favorites and I can sing along and be silly with my 6-month old. I can't wait until she can sing along too!
Best children's CD.......2007-05-13
All the songs are sung with an original twist. My ten month old daughter loves listening to this in the car (which means I don't have to sing Itsy, Bitsy Spider 50 times in a row) and it helped me learn lots of different songs quickly. I would buy this CD as a present for all my friends with young kids.

Talib does it again............2007-05-28
Hey cop this album in your collection.
This album is nothing but brilliance, lyrically, vocals, beats, subject, etc. Talib continues to produce quality work, as this album shows. Clever artist, with mad skills.
My fav tracks are pretty much everyone of em. If i had to pick one it would have to be 'the proud', and 'stand to the side'. Buy this album if you dont have it. Much recommended. Checkout his other album "Beautiful Struggle".

Monumental.......2007-04-26
I would have to say that this is the definitive Kweli album that cemented his place in the history of rap music. There is so much variety on this album, it's hard to find fault with it. Honestly, there's one particular song I don't care for. But it's a collaboration with an artist who I truly admire, so I won't diss it here. I mean, they had good intentions. The bottom line is that you need Kweli's "Quality" in your musical library.
TALIB KWELI-QUALITY.......2007-02-11
I have been a fan of the duo BLACKSTARR comprised of Mos Def and Talib Kweli since the release of "Respiration" from their first CD. The CD "Quality" is just that...a high quality musical production created by one of the few remaining hip hop lyricists who has managed to stay true to his craft.
"Quality" is a best buy and a must have to those hip hop fans tired of the same massed produced, tired beats, lame lyrics and simple hooks most of today's mainstream artists force upon our ear lobs.
Quality over Quantity anyday!.......2006-11-27
Standout Tracks:RUSH, GET BY, SHOCK BODY, GUN MUSIC, WAITIN FOR THE DJ, GUERILLA MONSOON RAP(underrated matchup with Black Thought and Pharoah Monche), PUT IT IN THE AIR(crazy plus I didnt see this collabo coming), THE PROUD(the deepest song on here), STAND TO THE SIDE, GOOD TO YOU etc. Filler: Talk to you(too pop sounding) and Joy. Bottom Line: Talib Kweli's Quality is one of those albums that you automatically put in the classic category(right along Little Brother's The Minstrel Show). The Production was great and Talib's rhymes are as sharp as they've ever been. A worthwhile purchase for a worthwhile album.
Absolutly Quality.......2006-07-22

Amazon.com's Best of 2000
The thrill of invention never stops on this first full-length album from Jurassic 5. Coming out of L.A.'s kinetic hip-hop underground, the multitalented combo whips up an irresistible flow of charisma and keeps the fun at a high-voltage level. J5 can pivot on a dime from one style to the next--street-corner barbershop, turntable friction, or kick-ass swing. But the constant focus is on the essentials of the art: Quality Control fuses fantastic wordplay and MC skills with a killer grab bag of beats. It's the achievement of J5 to look back in a way so fresh it shines a light ahead. --Thomas May
Amazon.com
L.A.-based Jurassic 5 have unearthed the lost art of flow. With a style reminiscent of the Native Tongues, J5 delivers one of the most consistent rap albums in recent memory. Cuts like "The Influence" and "Great Expectations" exhibit a wonderfully organic quality that could help us all to forget the tired rap formulas of money, hoes, and gats. Comprised of four MC's and two DJs (DJ Nu-Mark and the legendary Cut Chemist), J5 is near Ellingtonian in size for a hip-hip troupe. The interplay between the members reeks of old school, the place where rap sounds honest and evolves as an art form. As well it should, because J5 aren't new to hip-hop; after all, they've been "rockin' since the '84 Fresh Fest." --Marc Calhoun
Customer Reviews:
SO much better than what you hear on the radio.......2006-07-12
I'll admit it, the first song I heard from J5 was "A Day At The Races" when I rented Tony Hawk's Underground, and I really liked their old-school sound. My library happened to have this cd in stock, so I checked it out without hessitation.
As you can obviously see, I was extremely impressed. I have become SO sick of today's hip-hop...It's no wonder all the punk rock kids at my school hate rap so much. They judge the entire genre on what they hear on the radio...GARBAGE. It's pretty sad how such a good genre of music has gone so far downhill over the past few years...
But this review is not meant to trash modern mainstream hip-hop, it's to praise this cd.
The first thing I noticed was the damn catchy beats. They are so original, and sound very different from one another, however, they all maintain that classic old-school style. The second thing I noticed was how well they flowed as a group. You would think that 4 MCs all rapping together would sound kinda choppy, but they take turns with the mic, and the transaction between each MC sounds clean and well-executed. What's more, they are very unified, and sound like one person when they rap in unison. Finally, their lyrics are intelligent, and don't praise money, gats, hoes, and all the other things hip-hop is criticized for.
So if you love old-school rap, or rap in general, this cd is a definate must-have. My favorite songs are "The Influence", "Great Expectations", "Quality Control", "Monkey Bars", "Jurass Finish First", and "Game".
Enjoy =)
J5-QUALITY CONTROL.......2006-03-20
THIS IS THE BEST RAP CD I'VE EVER HEARD. THE BEATS AND RHYMES ARE EXCELLENT. J5'S BEST CD SO FAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"4 mc's at your door once more".......2006-03-12
This is my favorite rap album, easy. J5's sound is so pure, it flows like nothing you've ever heard. The beats are so original, and so damn fresh. The rhymes are rediculous, they just keep coming. The songs are a treat for your ears. This album will put you in a good mood no matter how bad your day is going. And these guys rap about stuff other than sex, drugs, and violence. They are truly the perfect group. Before I heard J5, rap didn't do much for me. All I heard was what was on TV. Eminem and 50 rappin about the same stuff over, and over. J5 blows the rest of the competition out of the water. My favorite tracks on this CD are Great Expectations, Lausd, The Influence, and Jurass Finish First. This album is what hip hop is all about, good times.
I represent the real from the beginning to the end of it.......2006-03-02
This is the best HipHop group I've ever heard. The lyrics are incredible, original and with content not like 50 cent, Nelly, Ludacris etc etc etc all those fake MC's, J5 is real HipHop, they are the truth and they tell you the truth without those gangsta lyrics so common in HipHop nowadays. After I heard J5 for the first time I came to realise that this is real HipHop, this is what i was looking for, Jurassic 5 will make you heard the lyrics and try to understand them because they do have content. Every song is different and have different beats and lyrics, you cant get bored listening to Jurassic. I think is the perfect HipHop group, I dont see anything wrong on them, you just listen Quality Control and you will realise, songs like Lausd and Great Expectations (not only those all the album as well) make you realise what they are, they DO love HipHop, they DO make music for pleasure and for love not like others MC's or so called Mc's, they are not interested in money etc etc, they are just perfect. Quality Control is the best album they have so far but that doesnt mean that the others are bad because what I see in Jurassic is that they always keep it real, you can see that in the 3 albums they have not change for bad even more they have change for better, for example Chali 2na flow have improved so well that it will make flip out your seat and the lyrics always have kept the Underground flavour. Definitely if you like real non commercial HipHop you have to buy Jurassic 5 albums especially Quality Control.
HipHop is in good hands......as long as they rest on Jurassic 5 ones. Go J5!!!!
One of the best and most accessible rap albums ever - there's NOTHING you won't like here!.......2006-01-08
I'm going to make the claim that Jurassic 5 is the best rap group ever - not because they're the best lyricists or MCs, but because they're the most accessible. They're just extremely fun to listen to. Every MC here has a distinct personality (and they are Akil, Zaakir, Marc 7even and Chali 2na), and you'll love every one of them (I love the one with the deep voice the most (Chali 2na)). The lyrics are always fun and memorable, and the beats are very catchy and impressive. Every track here is wonderful and definitely memorable which is a hard thing to achieve (many rap albums also have VERY good songs, but they tend to not be that memorable after listening to them). Though I love many many rap artists (Ice Cube, Too $hort, Run-D.M.C., The Beastie Boys, Dr. Dre, Skee-Lo...), Jurassic 5 wins hands down as my favorite group. There's a high probability that most people will love this album (and to an extent their follow-up "Power In Numbers"). Highly recommended!

Customer Reviews:
my daughter loves this!.......2006-07-19
My 7 year old daughter loves this CD! So do all her friends. She listens all the time and it is our favorite sing along for the car. Of course, as an adult I like the real Beatles the best...but I was pleasantly surprised at how good these kids versions are. I don't understand all the "how dare they do this with the Beatles" stuff that some people blabber about. For me it works...my daughter loves it and now seems more interested in my other Beatles CDs, AND I much prefer hearing this over and over again versus some of the other kids music we have.
Not better than The Beatles.......2006-07-14
The songs are supposedly sung by kids, but some of them are sung so similarly to the originals that it's hard to tell. Not that it's BAD that the songs are similar, it's just that, well, it's just not an improvement to the real Beatles, so why not just get a CD of the Beatles. I also bought Beatles 1 at the same time, and my 2 yr old loves listening to it. Get that instead.
The Best Kids Music CD!.......2005-10-13
This is the best kids music CD we own. All three of my kids (ages 1 through 7) love listening to it. The best part of it is that I enjoy it too. Of course I have all the original Beatles records, but this CD does such a great job of introducing the kids to this music that it's fun for me and my husband too. Like another reviewer said, my kids weren't interested in the real Beatles recordings before. But after listening to this for a while, they are starting to enjoy both - The Bingo version and the originals. What a great idea. What a great album. I wish they would do the same with other groups. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
A gateway to the Beatles.......2005-09-11
This cd is a good introduction to the Beatles. While the original recordings of these songs are my preference, that wasn't the case with my two year old. She didn't take to the originals. So these versions provided the necessary gateway to the originals. The songs are recreated very faithfully, but with children singing most of the chorus'. This was what was needed to create the interest for my child. After a few weeks of listening a seamless transition to the "#1's" was accomplished.
Great Stuff!.......2005-04-22
I love this album. My kids love to listen to both the original Beatles and these versions. They especially love to listen to other kids singing! These versions seem to be made with the highest quality in mind and with respect for the orignal versions. After we got this album my children were dancing around and singing along. They request it over and over and the nice part is that it is also great for my wife and I to listen to (more so than other kids albums like The Wiggles). I highly recommend this album.

Album Description
A beautiful collection of great Jewish Music. Classics by Ernest Bloch and Max Bruch, mixed with rarely heard gems by Maurice Ravel, Zavel Zilberts, Jacob Wasilkovsky, and David Meyerowitz. "Wie Shlecht es is Ohn Gelt", a Yiddish Theatre gem, is alone worth the price of admission for its mixture of pathos and humor. The songs by Zilberts are an important and beautiful part of the Jewish music legacy that must be heard.
Customer Reviews:
"Beautiful"? More like "funereal". Very dark and depressing........2007-07-12
"Beautiful"? I did not find anything about this music "beautiful". Most of it is very dark and depressing. A few of the songs sound like something you would hear in a horror movie. Now I know why they do not provide samples to listen to. The only two songs I found pleasant to listen to were "Zilberts: Reb Dovid'l" and "Meyerowitz: Gelt (Wie Shlecht es is Ohn Gelt)". I am very disappointed. Admittedly, I purchased this CD without really knowing what to expect. I just trusted the previous reviews. Try to find samples to listen to before you purchase this CD to see if you like this kind of music.
BEAUTIFUL!!.......2006-01-07
I love this CD and have bought several for friends. Music is so very beautiful. Toda raba!!!!
Encore! Encore!.......2004-01-13
Perhaps no other instrument captures the sad-sweet contemplative mood of classical Jewish music like a cello. Is this because so many Jewish composers have written for the cello, that we think of it as a "Jewish" instrument? Or did they choose the cello because it sings so beautifully of the Jewish soul? Like the chicken and the egg, this question may never be answered -- but it doesn't really matter. This superb music is an important part of our Jewish legacy in its own right.
On this CD, cellist Richard Locker, accompanied by Susan Walters on piano, brings together 12 classical Jewish pieces, some well-known and others not so, in an absolutely magnificent performance -- so beautiful, that it literally brought tears to my eyes. The CD starts out with a niggun (Hasidic tune) by Ernest Bloch, then moves into to the dark, somber strains of Max Bruch's "Kol Nidre." From there it rises in mood, to end with a playful Yiddish theater piece, "Wie schecht is ohne Gelt" (How awful it is to be without money!) Included is the rarely heard "Meditation Hebraique" by Bloch, which he dedicated to Pable Casals, and a trio of pieces by the lesser-known composer, Zavel Zilberts (1881-1949), who directed the Choral Society of New York and played with the Metropolitan Opera. All of this is performed on a cello made by Nicolo Gagliano, dated 1780. To hear such a fine old instrument played by a talented, sensitive musician is truly a mechayah! (pleasure)
Superb!.......2003-12-05
I recently received this CD as a gift and was simply overwhelmed by how beautiful it is. The music, the playing, and the recording are all stunning. The interpretations of the well known works are magnificent and the pieces by Zilberts and Meyerowitz are a revelation. I cannot recommend this recording highly enough.
A superb collection.......2002-11-17
Jewish Cello Masterpieces is magnificent! This is a soulful performance by a true cello master. I look forward to more work from Richard Locker!

I have this on cassette!.......2006-08-14
I have this on casette, and it rocks! I will be getting it on CD, because I'm afraid the tape will break soon. A killer dance mix that'll have you dancing in no time.
PS: There's an extra verse in "Let's Talk About Sex". I don't know why it wasn't included in the original version.
gotta have it.......2005-09-23
excellent product, natural rhythmic progressions... only one problem it skips.... please send me another copy...i cannot live without it.....i gotta have it...
God bless the USA.......2005-05-07
As you've read in previous reviews, my parties are legendary events like the New Year's Party scene in "Can't buy me love". I've gotten a hold of some dance mix CDs from other countries like Dance Mix Ukraine, Dance Mix Mongolia and Dance Mix Bolivia and I'm not going lie, they sucked. Most of the songs had no beat and I didn't understand what we being talked about. We would try to dance to it, but after about 2 minutes we just sat down and drank some more. So I think to myself, "If I'm getting a dance mix from a country I might as well spend the extra few bucks and get the best the USA has to offer.". Once again, my thought process was brilliant. I threw this thing on the party turned into an episode of getting fit with Denise Austin. Everyone was moving, bodies were sweating and women were grinding up on me like I was ground Chuck. The beats on this thing were so cool that Meat's mom came over and partied. Kroll was doing one armed pushups with hot girls on his back while I was putting together my bedroom schedule for the night. It was what my friend Tyrell calls, "Tight". Get this cd if you have the money.
Best workout music ever!.......2003-01-15

When this Jerome Kern (music) and Oscar Hammerstein II (lyrics and libretto, based on Edna Ferber's novel) show premiered in 1927 it powerfully changed the course of musicals by being about something: the sweep of 40 years of American history, racial tensions and relations (including miscegenation), even spousal and parental abandonment. It also featured some of the most splendid songs ever written for the legitimate stage, both building on the operetta and music-hall past, and presaging plot-advancement and character-development numbers (which took another quantum leap in Oklahoma). "Make Believe," "Why Do I Love You?" and "Ol' Man River" became standards almost at first hearing, and the production was a hit in spite of the controversy surrounding it. Show Boat suffered only from the lack of sophisticated recording techniques to preserve the original performances, although Helen Morgan (who played the mulatto Julie) later recorded her signature song "Bill." Three movie versions and countless stage revivals kept Show Boat alive and popular--although bowdlerized--for almost 50 years without a definitive recording. (The 1971 production, with Cleo Laine as Julie, came closest.) But it's all here, in the 1994 Toronto recording whose cast transferred almost intact to Broadway. It's a glorious rendering from start to finish, with Rebecca Luker and Mark Jacoby as good as any Magnolia and Gaylord Ravenal we're ever likely to hear. And, I'm sorry Helen and Cleo, but Lonette McKee's "Bill" (with lyrics by P G. Wodehouse) is the most wrenching rendition I've ever heard. --Robert Windeler

Cotton Blossoms.......2006-01-06
"....Oh, Gay!" cooes sweet Magnolia; Paul Robeson wouldn't have raised an eyebrow, although, nowadays, (where Sondheim and the English "grand operatic musical" have reigned supreme for two decades) a romantic lead called `Gaylord Ravenal', nicknamed `Gay', might have been eschewed, let alone the "n" word (Hal Prince ruled to change it for "color'd people"), also the melodies might be considered rather "passé"....yet hardly any current tenor would be too happy (or able) to go through the notes in "You Are Love" every single night.... passé or not.... So, can anyone consider some tune from `Cats' or `Phantom' either better constructed or more "modern" than, say, Kern's "I Have the Room Above" or "Bill"? Oscar Hammerstein's composer decades later, the great Richard Rodgers, tried his hand at "sublime choral writing" for children and nuns in is arch-twee billion-dollar "Sound of Music" score, yet, in comparison, Kern tackled "Alma Redentoris Mater" with simplicity and charm, having the bass intoning Ol' Man River as a Passacaglia. OK, maybe Ellie's numbers are a bit insipid, yet they retain wit and fitness from its forerunner, the English Music-Hall. On the other extreme, a jewel like "Can't Help Lovin Dat Man of Mine", with its gorgeous blue-note-scale melody, has hardly been equaled. Gershwin's aria "What You Want wid Bess?", a comparable gem, was written nearly 10 years later.... (the scholarly L. Bernstein, in his "On The Town" -particularly in the initial baritone song- had Kern and Gershwin, inherently, in mind).
This recording is beautiful, faithful to its period and the sound is transparent and perfectly well balanced. The voices are nicely styled and unmannered, the orchestra sounds just like it should: a pit band (unlike in so many revival recordings of great musicals that over-inflate the orchestrations with Wagnerian forces). Mark Jacoby is a fine light tenor, although a triffle thin at times; regretably, his "You Are Love" interval jumps are strained on top. Rebeca Luker sounds pure and perfect throughout, even when refraining "fish gotta swim" after the gorgeous bluesy rendition of Lonette McKee, maybe my favourite Julie of all times (since we couldn't ever have Lady Day in the cast....) Michel Bell is a passionate, robust-voiced Joe and Gretha Boston's Queenie is marvellous; her "Mis'ry's Comin' Round" remins both the shrewish Maria and the religious Serena Robbins from "Porgy and Bess"....(again, I recall Kern's influence on Gershwin's own folk opera).
A must-have album, expertly abridged., worth every penny (and of its $10 million Livent Inc. stage production) if only for Elaine Stritch's moving, anthological performance in "Why do I Love You?".
Great Teaser...............2004-08-29
This classic American musical seems to have suffered from some curse, which has successfully prevented it from recieving proper recognition and also seems to have produced very few official "original cast" recordings for us to enjoy.
Obviously, I'm not serious about such curse, but in my opinion, this 1993 Canadian production highlights recording, is the latest "teaser" which only makes us Show Boat fans all the more curious.
This recording is an excellent edition of the Jerome Kern legendary score. Though somewhat adapted to reflect changing ideals and delivery style, the score remains as faithful as possible to the original. The cast is absolutely perfect in all areas of performance art. I wish there was more of Robert Morse's Captain Andy, because the little snippets he recieves are only enough to want to hear more. Captain Andy has the fewest singing parts in the musical than any other character, which brings me to my next point.
It's more than obvious, that Livent rushed the tempo here, in order to fit as much material possible into one single compact disc recording. Whatever the reasoning behind this, it's rather irritating upon making it's first impression. I purchased this recording many years ago at a local Tower records store and shut it off by the end of the first track, because I couldn't keep up with the incredibly fast tempo. I recall my sister and I looking at each other with our mouths wide open. Yes, it's that fast!
Well, don't let this deter you from looking for a good used copy. This fast-forward-like tempo is limited to only a few tracks, mainly ensemble numbers, while the solos and duets are left unaltered. Sadly, it took me several years to finally discover the splendor of this recording upon giving it another try back in 1998. Since then, I've nearly worn it out.
I had the pleasure of seeing this grand Harold Prince production back in 1996, when it's 1st national tour parked itself into the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles. It remains my second favorite musical of all time and have since been waiting for an official full recording, with dialogue and original tempo intact. After Livent's misfortune, this is highly unlikely. Add this one to your collection at once! A must for any fan of great classic American musical theatre and a great teaser of a sampler for fans of this most neglected musical masterpiece.
one of the best SHOW BOAT cast albums.......2004-08-16
Hal Prince's epic revival of SHOW BOAT was a huge success in Toronto, and it quickly transferred to Broadway, spawning a national tour as well as productions in London and Australia. This cast album features the original Toronto company, headed by Rebecca Luker as Magnolia, with Robert Morse as Capt'n Andy, Elaine Stritch as Parthy, Lonette McKee as Julie and Michel Bell as Joe. This cast is simply sensational. This recording of SHOW BOAT is one of the more satisfying out of the myriad of cast albums that exist for this score. The Jerome Kern-Oscar Hammerstein score perfectly bridges the styles of opera, operetta and musical comedy to tell the sprawling tale of a troupe of river-players over a span of nearly 30 years. Orchestrations by William David Brohn (combined with the originals by Robert Russell Bennett) perfectly define the changing era's in the story. The cast also features Gretha Boston as Queenie, Joel Blum as Frank, Dorothy Stanley as Ellie and Tammy Amerson as Kim with Mark Jacoby as Ravenal. This recording is currently out-of-print because the company which bankrolled the revival (Livent) is no longer in operation.
A wonderful, flawed recording.......2004-03-22
Like the "Music Fan" who previously commented on this recording, I am also a theatre student specializing in dramaturgy, with an interest in musical theatre. And I happen to like this CD.
Yes, any production of SHOW BOAT should take into account historical accuracy. And yes, there are anachronisms in this recording (there are also anachronisms in the original score). But I think it's important to recall that while SHOW BOAT's plot begins in 1887, it was of course written in 1927 -- and revived by Harold Prince in 1993. This is the story of America's transition from the 19th century to the 20th, as seen through the eyes of several generations of 20th century American artists. Kern and Hammerstein did not intend their work to be a museum piece about the 1880's, nor did Prince intend his revival to be a museum piece about the 1920's. SHOW BOAT, as critic Ethan Mordden points out, is a musical that must constantly be reinterpreted and rediscovered for each successive audience, and this 1993 recording reflects that thinking. For example, the character of Julie may have been written for soprano Helen Morgan to play, but subsequent revivals have cast a belter in the role, to endow Julie with an earthiness and a contemporaneity and to contrast her with Ravenal and Magnolia's operatic grandeur.
The glory of Prince's revival, which won universal critical acclaim and a trunkful of Tonys, is that it gives SHOW BOAT its proper due as a great, groundbreaking work of American art, but it also acknowledges the problems inherent in the original book and production and tries to solve them. The character of Parthy, for example, was supposed to be a shrewish old spoilsport: that's tradition. But this production is about rediscovery, not tradition. Thus, Prince takes the song "Why Do I Love You?", originally a love duet between Magnolia and Ravenal, and reassigns it to Parthy to croon to the infant Kim. Elaine Stritch pulls it off superbly; with this brief number, she rescues the character from the trap of stereotype and turns Parthy into a complete person, full of wonder at her new role as a grandmother. Listen to Stritch's voice break with emotion as she sings "Maybe that's because you love me" -- it's a brilliantly human moment.
The major flaw of this recording is that it includes almost no spoken dialogue, except for brief passages in "I Have the Room Above Her" and the Act Two Finale. Much of the orchestral underscoring is included, though, and this seems to make the gap in between the verses of the songs all the more obvious. This elimination, in my opinion, damages the overall quality, since we lose the transitional dialogue that helps us understand some of the more complex songs like "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man" and "After the Ball." The former foreshadows how Julie will be exposed as a mulatto, and eventually be abandoned by her husband; the latter shows Magnolia discovering her own strength and identity, on the eve of the 20th century, by reconnecting with her family (Hammerstein's favorite theme). But without the dialogue, "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man" and "After the Ball" devolve from complex musical scenes into rather simple showtunes.
What's unfortunate is that the voices in this recording -- Mark Jacoby, Rebecca Luker, Robert Morse, Gretha Boston, Lonette McKee, and of course, Stritch -- are all well-rounded musical theatre performers with solid acting backgrounds. In particular, I wish I could have heard McKee use that rich voice to tackle the Miscegenation Scene. Certainly, these singer-actors could have handled the spoken sections better than do the glamorous opera stars of John McGlinn's comprehensive, if rather pompous, three-disc set.
One thing about this recording that takes a bit of time getting used to is the tempo at which the music is conducted. Some of the numbers sound, I swear, like they're on fast-forward. The overture, for example, clocks in at a brisk 2:47. McGlinn uses the same arrangement, with only a few additional bars of music -- but his version lasts a whole two minutes longer. The up-tempo conducting endows the score with an unusual vitality, but sometimes obscures the moments of romance and serenity.
But on the whole, the merits of this album far outweigh the flaws. I enjoy the 1993 SHOW BOAT recording very much, and recommend it to anyone who's seriously interested in the American musical theatre. Hope they bring it back into print soon; till then, have fun finding yourself a used copy.
Ummm...it's a good try.......2003-01-29
I'm sorry, I really wanted to like this CD seeing as I am a huge Show Boat fan, but I felt that it tried too hard to sound flashy and modern. The orchestra was harsh and shallow and the new arrangements were abominations on the great Robert Russell Bennett's originals. Yes, Rebecca Luker is a wonderful Magnolia, and I wish she had played the part in a better production. Mark Jacoby made me cringe so much, and Michel Bell had no oomph except for unneeded outbursts. The rest of the cast was decent enough. The only other thing that really makes me not like this recording is that I'm a theater student currently studying dramaturgy (that's where you research the period a play takes place in). Whoever was the dramaturg for this production should never be allowed to work again. The music was way too late 20's jazz in the first act, which is supposed to be in the late 1800's, and Lonnette McKee's belter Julie wouldn't have turned up for at least another decade or so. Am I too picky? Maybe. But if you want a CD with the real heart and soul of this piece, pick up the much-lauded John McGlinn studio cast. It is so much better than this one.

Album Description
On this hand drum CD, T. Roy clearly demonstrates how to play 30 of the most popular Middle Eastern Rhythms used in music and dance today. His "say it / play it" approach makes learning these ancient rhythms simple and fun. Included in the inset of this CD are the written and spoken phrases for each rhythm. The "cheat-sheet" inset, depicting each rhythm in plain-sentence, spoken verse (not musical notation or some strange code), along with the spoken-word only track of ALL the rhythms (for ease of memorization in the car etc.), are by themselves worth the price of this CD.
Simply put, this project is a "must have" for all serious hand drummers and dancers.

Great Collection; Beautiful Piano.......2005-09-09
BEGINNINGS by Fernando Ortega is a 2 cd set featuring selections of some of the "early" recordings of this great pianist primarily drawn from four albums: Meditations of the Heart, Meditations of the Heart Encore, Hymns and Meditations, and Night of Your Return. While many of these cds are available for purchase online, it is nearly impossible to find them in your typical Christian music store.
Of the thirty-four songs on the album, seventeen are instrumental.
Songs from Meditations of the Heart include: Sacrifice of Praise, Living Water, Morning Star, Family, I Love To Praise Your Name, and As For Us. (Six of the ten songs on the album)
Songs from Meditations of the Heart Encore include: I Remember Well, It's Your Love, Tossed On The Wind, Teach Me Thy Way, and Creation Sings. (Five of the eleven songs on the album).
Hymns and Meditations: Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing, Near The Cross, Softly and Tenderly, Nothing But The Blood, and I Need Thee Every Hour/Just As I Am/ Come Ye Sinners Medley, What Wondrous Love Is This, Con Que Pagaremos, Brethren We Have Met To Worship, Sacred Head Now Wounded, and Nearer My God To Thee. (Which appears to be the entire album of Hymns and Meditations)
It also seems to include all the songs on Night Of Your Return as well. (My Song Is Love Unknown, Praise To The Lord, The Almighty, Night Of Your Return, Mi Abuelito, Chimayo, Jesus, Lover of My Soul, Here Is Love, Road Song, Stricken, Smitten and Afflicted, This is My Father's World, and Green Pastures.)
With two complete albums and two partial albums, BEGINNINGS is well worth the price and is a great addition for any Fernando Ortega fan's collection.
This piano music is wonderful. His style simple but beautiful.
