This is my favorite CD of all time. As soon as I lose it or a friend "borrows" it, I have to get another! Hard to find songs....

Can't Knock A Classic.......2007-03-08
If you "like" SNP, you will "love" this album, particularly if you enjoy the simplicity and creativeness of old school hip hop. The beats are clean, the lyrics are fun, and the variation provided by the tracks keeps the album moving. And of all, knowing the signature track "Showstopper" and how it vaulted SNP's career takes the album up a tier.

When I was young I use to write down all the words to my favorite songs on this album by rewinding the cassette playa numerous times till I got it down pack.
This is one of the first albums to be released by an all-female rap group, Hot, Cool & Vicious is paced by its opening track, "Push It," one of the first rap songs to hit number one on the dance singles charts. Considering how little Salt-n-Pepa actually rap on "Push It," which is all about its instrumental hook, they maintain a surprisingly strong presence over most of Hot, Cool & Vicious.
Written and produced by Hurby "Luv Bug" Azor and recorded by the original Salt-N-Pepa line up -- Cheryl "Salt" James, Sandy "Pepa" Denton and Latoya "Spinderella" Hanson (later replaced by Deidre "Spinderella" Roper) -- HOT, COOL & VICIOUS made Salt-N-Pepa the first female rappers to earn a Grammy nomination.
No, they aren't technical virtuosos on the mic, but their fairly basic raps are carried off with brash confidence and enthusiasm. Some of the other key tracks borrow ideas from outside sources: the single "Tramp" is a rap remake of the Otis & Carla soul classic, and "The Show Stopper" is an answer record to Doug E. Fresh's "The Show." The duo's sass comes across very well on "My Mic Sounds Nice" and "I'll Take Your Man," and they're equally assertive on "Chick on the Side."
If I would have to choose my favorite party tracks would be "Chick on the Side," "My Mike Sounds Nice," "Tramp" and "Push It," which topped the pop charts in 1987.

SALT N PEP DEFINATELY ARE ONE OF THE CORNERSTONES OF FEMALE RAP AND HIP HOP PERIOD. STILL TILL THIS DAY HAVE I SEEN OR HEARD A FEMALE GROUP ROCK THE MIC AS MANY YEARS AS THESE WOMEN. I LOVE THIS ALBUM MOST OF ALL. I THINK THEIR SOUND WAS MORE B BOYISH WITH THE 1ST SPIN THAN THE 2ND BUT THEY STILL MANAGED TO MAKE HITS... THEY ARE FEMALE LEGENDS IN THE RAP GAME !!!!!

Pretty boring save one standout track.......2004-06-28
This is probably my least favourite Dave Brubeck Quartet recording. Most of the tracks are pretty drab and aren't very exciting. The standout would have to be the first track, 'Lover', which just rocks. It is probably my favourite recording of Paul Desmond and Brubeck together and one of my favourite improvisations. I would buy the cd just for that track. The way he builds his solo - riffs, complex lines, drama, it is like he is telling a story. It just really flows beautifully. The other tracks I have tried to appreciate but they simply bore me, even the upper tempo ones.

This was my first Dave Brubeck CD and I fell in love with it the minute I listened to it. Highly recommend it!
Still Fresh.......2003-09-13
This album, a live night club set, is more evidence of the daring, experimentation, and innovation that characterized the Brubeck ensembles of the 1950's (ironically, 1960's "Time Out" and many of the releases subsequent to "Take Five" represented a more programmed and predictable approach for the quartet). "Jazz: Red Hot and Cool" lacks the energy and excitement of "Jazz Goes to College" and the inspired brilliance of "Jazz at Oberlin," but it's an opportunity to hear the quartet playing as much for each other as for a large audience of cheering young fans. The results, if restrained, are consistently stimulating and cerebral, with more emphasis on counterpoint and polyphony than on Dave's thunderous block chords.
One caveat concerning this reissue: Although the instruments have an added "presence" compared to the original vinyl album, the boosting of the bass is frequently overdone if not downright annoying. Even with the bass control on my receiver turned all the way back, the notes played by Bob Bates are dominating the sound, booming when they should be quietly walking. Also, I detect some "wavering" (wow and flutter) of the piano sound, which I don't recall being on the original LP. Indeed, the texture of the group's sound on the original Columbia LP is more ambient, convincing, and in general "wears better."

Now I'm and old bopper and when I found out that it had been re issued I immediatly bought it. Sure brought back my childhood and good memories.

Hip-hop, Acid Jazz and Coltrane music.......2004-03-02
First off let it be known by anyone reading this that I am not a big fan of rap. However, I have dabbled in listening to it as far back as the Run DMC days and like some of it. Certain artists have appealed to me in this genre, most notably Tu Pac and more recently A Tribe Called Quest. With the merging of of jazz and rap I was further intrigued and pleased with such artists as Digable Planets who breathed fresh air into the genre. The immergence of Acid Jazz and groups like Us3 also piqued my interest. That said, there are things I love about this disc and things I have to pass on. Conceptually it is a worthwhile venture as it is part of the Red, Hot + Cool series that benefiits AIDS. If the message in the music saves a few people and the money gets to AIDS organizations world wide than props to the musicians for dedicating their net proceeds. The merging of old school jazz and their musicians with a younger modern urban hip-hop style is innovative and for the most part works. There is enough good on this disc to outweigh the bad. Good stuff includes the international flair given jazz bass legend Ron Carter, who plays double bass here, by MC Solar who raps in a soft French style, Spearheads cool vocals over a jazzy funky beat that asks a question concerning AIDS "How am I gonna live my life if I'm positive , is it gonna be a negative"? in a story like fasion that follows him from being with lovers to going to the clinic and getting his results in the song entitled "Positive." The hip hop nation is represented equally with old jazz musicians for some very interesting results. "Flying High in The Brooklyn Sky" pairs a grey haired veteran Lester Bowie on trumpet with half his age Digable Planets for a smooth song. "Stolen Moments" by UFO is incredible with samples from Oliver Nelson's big band infused with the computer programming of Ayumi Obinata, mixed with some nice vibraphone and violin work spaced between vocals by Time Five all under the guidance of the United Future Organization trio of Tadashi Yabe, Toshio Matuura and Raphael Sebbag. The Roots are coupled with one of the grandfathers of Acid Jazz(before it was called that) Roy Ayers who plays vibes and a variety of other contributions for a song that probably appeals more to the younger hip-hop urbanite. Original funkmaster Bernie Worrel plays with the Groove Collective for a funky jazzy tune that is a multi-layered synthesis of horn interplay that has moments of Middle Eastern flight fancy. Us3 keeps it funky with tenor saxophonist Joshua Redman on "The Scream" with samples from the classic song by Pharoah Sanders(that is him on the cover) entitled "Upper Egypt and Lower Egypt." Not so coincidentally Pharoah Sanders is featured twice more on "This is Madness" and the trip -hop mix of "The Creator Has A Master Plan." Originally the people who made this disc wanted to include "A Love Supreme" by John Coltrane and give it the same "modern" treatment but this idea was dropped. Instead Branford Marsalis was asked to play the Coltrane masterpiece suite. Marsalis responded to the task but with the thought that this was his version and that he was not trying to play Coltrane like the original. The result is a beautiful addition to the Coltrane legacy. The second disc includes the Marsalis version of " A Love Supreme" that comes in at just over eighteen minutes for a recognizable version but clearly distinct. Also on the second disc the wife of John Coltrane, Alice Coltrane, contributes an untouched "A Love Supreme" taken from her 1971 disc "Alice Coltrane with World Strings Galaxy"(the original Lp featured Peter Max original art) in which she plays various keyboards in a pretty spacey tribute. Pharoah Sanders "The Creator Has A Master Plan" takes on another dimension, full of a world music vibe that barely sounds like the original since it is missing the Leon Thomas vocals and only five minutes in length. The mixing of chaotic urban messages and sounds with the Middle Eastern influenced horn of Sanders is refreshing and beautiful in it's own right. I play the second disc often primarily because of the Marsalis playing of Coltrane and the Sanders classic revamped in a trip -hop manner. There are far more good songs on this two disc set than bad, plenty of music for your money and it all goes for a good cause so therefore I recommend this disc to acid jazz and hip-hop fans alike. A companion disc is also available entitled Red Hot on Impulse.

This is my first acid jazz cd ; i give it 4 stars coz there many tunes i don't like it (i prefer funky-jazz but this compilation also contains rap tunes, that probably i can't understand.. they seems to be nonsense :).. anyway tracks like "troble don't last always", "positive" and "nocturnal sunshine" are state of the art in this kind of music.. probably best tunes i ever heard...

Robertllr reviewer from the united states, you are obviously a heavy metal fan, or a fan of big band crappy (no rhythm) jazz, so don't waste fusion lovers time by rating an album that is obviously not your taste in music. This album by Paul Desmond can be sumed up in one word! SUPERB!!!!
An easy listening classic.......2005-02-06
Many of the comments in the review below (robertllr)are accurate, and perhaps those looking for examples of Paul Desmond's purer jazz style should look elsewhere. The orchestration is very '70s strings, but it was after all recorded in 1969(?), so I believe the review is overly subjective.
All the featured performances are excellent, Paul Desmond's playing is superb, taking a little more of a back seat, but with some beautiful, memorable phrasing. Not mentioned in other reviews are three vocal tracks featuring Wanda de Sa, "To Say Goodbye", "Circles" and "Crystal Illusions". In "To Say Goodbye", she was forced by the recording schedule and low register of the instrumental part to sing well below her normal register, producing a striking and sultry version of this song, a must-have for her fans. Edu Lobo may not be Jobim, but "Crystal Illusions" is perhaps his best known work. He performs on the track and Wanda (his wife) sings it beautifully. The swirling '70s orchestation suits the song very well, the edgy chord shifts provide Paul with a challenging backdrop for his solos; this is probably my favourite version.
I have the original LP, so I haven't heard the alternative takes, these are a bonus for Desmond fans.
This is an easy listening classic which is head and shoulders above others in the genre and has the power to move you with some exceptional performances by several icons of jazz and the '60s "Bossa" sound.
Desmond, yes; Sebesky, no.......2003-01-14
Ostensibly, From the Hot Afternoon is a showcase for a couple of post-Jobim/Gilberto Brazilian song writers and for some new Brazilian instrumental and vocal talent. This sounds like an interesting idea for an album. To be sure, Desmond had a remarkable flair for the bossa nova style. He even recorded an album with Jim Hall in 1962 called Bossa Antigua which contains several of Desmond`s own lovely bossa-style compositions. (This, despite the ruefully punning title, was only two years after Getz and Byrd recorded the ground-breaking Jazz Samba, which introduced American jazz fans to the "new thing" and started a craze in jazz and popular music of the time.)
Anyway, it must have seemed like a good idea to everyone, even as late as 1969, to return for another take on the Brazilian jazz-samba style. Unfortunately, the two featured composers--Milton Nascimento and Edu Lobo--are not remotely in the same league with someone like Antonio Carlos Jobim; nor is the rhythm section (with the exception of Ron Carter on bass) up to the caliber of Jim Hall's guitar and Connie Kay's drums on Bossa Antigua.
But these problems would not alone be enough to completely sink an album featuring the incomparable Paul Desmond.
What does succeed in ruining it, though, is Don Sebesky. For some reason, Sebesky was hired to add light orchestral arrangements ("sweetening" it was called) to many jazz albums that were produced by Creed Taylor in the late 70's-including several other Desmond/CTI releases as well as sessions by other jazz greats. Whether the incorporation of these dreadful over-dubbed orchestrations was a symptom of blatant commercialization, or whether Taylor genuinely thought it constituted some kind of revolutionary pop/jazz/classical fusion, I don't pretend to know.
But I do know the results are, to say the least, un-jazzy. Sebesky's arrangements are so insipid that they make elevator music seem exciting--so pop and goofy that they make new-age music seem hot. Moreover, they are so poorly realized that they even submerge the principal musicians! You have to constantly switch channels just to hear Desmond over all the strings, flutes, French horns, clarinet, oboe, harp, and electric piano. Can it be that some engineer really thought Desmond's alto merited no more prominence that the first violin or the oboe?
The final result, then, is a miasma of muzak, with the ghost of a jazz giant floating around in it.
Still, there is a reason for a diehard Desmond fan (like myself) to own this re-release; and that is for the extra takes that are laid down without the overdubbed orchestra parts, thus giving us a chance to hear Desmond in his natural, small-group setting.
Sad to say, however, these takes seem uninspired at best-especially when compared with the same sort of music and the same sort of instrumentation that resulted in the effort captured on Bossa Antigua. On the Hot Afternoon tracks Desmond sounds like he's spinning his wheels, rather than giving out with the remarkable lyrical invention that graces all of his work prior to and after this lamentable Sebesky period. On most of these cuts, he takes a modal and undirected approach to his improvisations. He seems to be playing almost as if he knew that his voice would be lost in the mixing anyway--playing like an accompanist, rather than like the featured soloist. Moreover, the cuts are all traditional pop-song length (two and a half to four minutes), which is not a format Desmond ever used, or sounds good on, either with the Brubeck quartet or with his own groups.
Desmond once remarked that he was not the type of musician to dominate a session-that his work very much depended on a rapport with his fellow band members. This album seems to prove the point: without a seasoned rhythm section, good material, and room to stretch, even the greatest of alto players found himself far too constrained to produce his best work.
Cool jazz from the master........2002-01-13
Desmond manages to simmer, sizzle, and be sultry all at once with these cuts. He said, I hear, that he wanted to sound like a dry martini. Well..he suceeded on all of his albums. This one is one of the best.

The third volume in Ace's ongoing series of mostly up-tempo west coast R&B obscurities from the late 1940s and early 1950s upholds the standards of its predecessors and may just be the best one yet.
An incredible 14 of these tracks have never been released before! None of the previously-released items have been available in any format since the advent of CD.
Many major names of the era are featured (Johnny Otis, Little Esther, Hadda Brooks, Jimmy Witherspoon, Helen Humes) alongside favourites from previous volumes (Butch Stone, Three Bits Of Rhythm). All tracks have been painstakingly remastered from the original Modern Records acetates, and sound like they were recorded yesterday rather than 50+ years ago.

It's understandable that most people concentrate on Gordon's Blue Note albums of the first half of the 60's, but the couple of perfectly fine albums he recorded in the mid-50's tend to get completely overlooked. That's a shame, because they represent an interesting interlude in his career, midway between the youthful rambunctiousness of his Savoy sides and the maturity of his Blue Notes. This album, for instance, alternates uptempo swingers with masterful ballads (thus the title). There's a straightforward quality to it that makes the Blue Note material seem to have a sour undertow in comparison. While that may be part of what gives the Blue Notes their complexity, like the proverbial fine wine, it's nice to occasionally have a shot of neat whiskey. The album Daddy Plays the Horn, from this same period, is equally good.

Say what you will about the state of entertainment-conglomerate megamergers, but this ambitious Rhino compilation of jazz in film--combining music selections from three studios--would have been all but impossible without them. More importantly, this satisfying set serves as a virtual primer of jazz's influence on American films and its rich, multihued heritage and diversity--be it the "race music" of the Mills Brothers' 1933 romp "Congo Fever," Duke Ellington and Hoagy Carmichael's elegant classicism, Louis Armstrong's refined Dixieland, the big-band swing of Count Basie, Artie Shaw, Tommy Dorsey, and Benny Goodman, or even that unlikeliest of jazz chanteuses, Doris Day. Collectors will also be delighted at the generous sampling of stellar outtakes that surface here for the first time, including an Ellington reading of "All God's Chillun Got Rhythm," originally intended for the Marx Brothers' Day at the Races, a smoky Lena Horne rendition of "I'll Get By," originally recorded for Louis B. Mayer's personal collection. And there are no fewer than nine cuts from the 1960 hipster opus The Subterraneans, many featuring Andre Previn, Art Farmer, Gerry Mulligan, and Art Pepper. Painstakingly compiled and lovingly annotated, this set is both great entertainment and joyous history lesson. If you're a fan of "traditional jazz", you'll love this incredible collection from Turner/Rhino. If you're a fan of classic musical soundtracks, you will also find this collection essential for your music library. If you're like me, and you have a pechant for both kinds of music, you'll be in utter ecstacy with the selections here.
The list of performers here reads like a who's who of jazz:
DUKE ELLINGTON, COUNT BASIE, LOUIS ARMSTRONG, GERRY MULLIGAN,
LESTER YOUNG, BENNY GOODMAN, CARMEN McRAE, FATS WALLER, the list goes on and on. What really makes this collection sizzle, are the real rarities included. Who knew Duke Ellington had recorded music for A DAY AT THE RACES with the Marx Bros.? No one! Until
the producers here unearthed a track that had been recorded by 'Sir Duke' for that classic comedy that ended up on the cutting room floor. That's just one example of the jewels to be found here. There are several great vocal renditions, with everyone from Ethel Waters to Pearl Bailey, and you even get a whiff of Brazillian Bossa Nova Jazz with Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto doing a version of THE GIRL FROM IPANEMA that is slightly different (but just as incredible) than the famous recording.
Then there's unreleased material from Nat "King" Cole, Billy Eckstine, and even Dorothy Dandridge. My favorite track is a swingin' rendition of "One O'Clock Jump" by Jimmy Dorsey and his Orchestra that almost sounds like it's going to explode!
It's too bad that more people don't know about this album. It's one of the most creative assemblages ever released on CD. The album comes with a richly-illustrated booklet and great liner notes, too!
Brilliant selections unavailable elsewhere.......2000-05-21
The only way to approximate this collection would be to turn on your tape recorder while these movies were showing on your TV. Even if you'd managed to do all that, you still wouldn't have the pristine sound quality that Rhino managed to get by using the source material for this collection. Let alone the out-takes that were never included in the released versions of the films.
My favorite examples here are the Bojangles/Fats version of "Great Big Way" (which opens the collection), Ellington's uncut rendition of "All God's Chillun Got Rhythm" (Marx Brothers fans take note - this is different than the hacked version that you'll hear in "Day At The Races"), and the Andre Previn selections on disk 2 - there's some wonderful soloing here, as good as the material that Benny Goodman recorded with him in the late 50's.
Sure, there's a little hokey stuff in here too, like the Mel Torme' selection in disk 1, but it's good-natured and doesn't detract from the real gems of the collection. It's a narrowly better value than Rhino's previous movie nugget compilation, "Alive and Kickin'", and it's fair to say that if you like that one, then you'll love this CD too.

This is the greatest CD. I heard it at a friend's house and now I am buying a copy. I actually like having the different interpretations of the same songs. The quality is phenomeonal.
Sole searching and great listening........1998-12-14
The tone qualities are excellent. It's hard to believe how good these old recordings are. The only negative is the repetition of the same pieces - Summertime 4 times, Man I Love 3 times and I love you Porgy 3 times.
