Really good flow to this album.......2007-07-03

Not as good as In Search Of...but much improved flow and has a consistently good vibe.

dissapointed.......2006-11-10

First off, I'm not saying this album is bad, it's not. I was a big fan of their first album and was real excited when this came out. However, I was really dissapointed. They seem to have basically, gone soft. Musically, they've matured quite a bit, but that sense excitement and energy is gone. This is a much more mellow album, with no guest rappers. I'm not saying you need a rapper to make the songs good, in fact songs like Bobby James and Brain were some of my favorite songs off In Search Of... I find this is a good album, but only if I listen to it once every couple months. A lot of the songs sound very similar to each other and it gets old. Just don't expect the same stuff you heard on their last album.

Late one night.......2006-10-13

It all started late one night; I was up watching videos late at night when I happened to catch "She Want's To Move". I thought to myself, "this song seems pretty cool." I hopped on my computer and downloaded the single via P2P software. I began listening to it more and more and it grew on me. N.E.R.D was then added to my repertoire of A list artists. Then one day a friend of mine showed up with a burned copy of Neptunes Presents....Clones and with prior knowledge of Pharrell and Chad I gave it a shot. I was overwhelmed with their behind the scenes genius. It was then added to my repertoire as well. I decided to push the limits and downloaded a few mp3's from Fly or Die(for lack of proper funding)and fell in love. The combination of rock and hip hop created the perfect blend of musical bliss. The move from drum machines to live instruments only made the feel and sound that much greater. With tracks like Maybe, Fly or Die, Don't Worry About It, She Want's To Move, and last but not least, Breakout, you can't help but love. Fly or Die by N.E.R.D appeals to all audiences. Definently a must have.

Really Good!.......2006-07-10

I didn't know much about N.E.R.D. except that it was more-or-less a side project for The Neptunes.

I saw this CD at a good price and figured, why not. I am a big fan of Neptunes beats, but don't expect the same sonics if you pick up N.E.R.D. - the sound is totally different and totally awesome. There is a great retro feel on this one, nothing over done however and mostly guitars as opposed to just beats.

My favourite tracks are: "Fly Or Die", "Jump", "Backseat Love", "She Wants To Move" and "Chariot Of Fire".

Worth checking out.

Influenced By The Past, But They Have Their Own Sound.......2006-06-16

This is one hell of an album! This album could've been considered one of the greatest Pop albums of all time if only it had the proper promotion. The vocals are mediocre, but Pharrell isn't really trying to sing and that's one of the things that make this album great!! As a true music fan, I can hear so many influences. From The Police, to Jimi Hendrix, to Early-Santana, to The Beatles' Sgt Pepper Era, to Early-Solo McCartney. And at the same time, they keep their own style intact.
I wish record companies could realize true talent like Pharrell and Chad instead of spending their money on fake, microwave-made pop artists who only are good for one or two years then they are replaced by another manufactured waste. Overall, "Fly Or Die" could rate up there with the classics like "Sgt Pepper", "Saturday Night Fever", "Thriller"......etc.

Essential Performances from a Great & Beloved Singer.......2004-01-09

For those of us who grew up on Janet Baker's recordings (and were lucky enough to hear her "live" as well), the sound of her voice and her singular artstic personality - British restraint coupled with fierce emotional and spiritual commitment - are indelibly imprinted in our minds and hearts. The closest current equivalent is Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, another superb artist who has charted her own course, and not surprisingly there is some overlap of repertoire, in the music of J.S. Bach, of course, but also Berlioz's Didon and Beatrice, Handel's Ariodante and Britten's Phaedra (composed for Baker).
This wonderful compilation is complementary to EMI's 2-CD "The Very Best of Janet Baker" -- no overlap of repertoire whatsoever. Unlike that set, which focused on concert repertoire (with orchestra or piano) there's a generous sampling here of Baker's operatic roles including Handel, Mozart, Purcell, Rameau, Gluck, and Britten. Also welcome is "Phaedra," one of Britten's strongest late works. And it's good to have the Berlioz: "Cleopatre" and "Herminie" complete, the big aria from "Beatrice et Benedict." (Why EMI included nothing from her recording of the last 2 scenes of "Les Troyens" is unfathomable.) The wide time-span allows us to hear Baker's voice in all its youthful, "sappy" warmth, as well as in its artistic maturity (though truth to tell she was pretty much a complete artist from the start). There are a few signs of wear in later items, nothing serious, in fact rather less than I remembered. I could have done with fewer of the "Arie Amorose" in favor of more cuts from her Gluck LP, which I believe has never been issued complete on CD, but that's just personal preference. The focus here is entirely on orchestrally accompanied works (or, in the case of the marvelous early disc of Ravel, Chausson & Delage songs, with chamber ensemble) so for Baker the supreme interpreter of English, German and French song you'll need to go elsewhere (the EMI has a fair sampling, especially of her Schubert). But everything here is indispensible.

Highly recommended.......2002-08-20

This pricey UK import CD filled a lot of gaps in my music collection and is an excellent overview of notable music of (mostly) recent films. It's difficult to find consistently listenable soundtrack collections like this, by that I mean free from the obligitory Whitney Houston or Celine Dion embarrassments. Usually rights issues prevent comprehensive compilations like this in the US, too. While I enjoy a lot of soundtrack music, there aren't so many complete soundtracks that I would care to own, some examples of exceptions being Ennio Morricone scores and the About a Boy Soundtrack. While certainly most of these tracks are the actual recordings used in their respective films, I noticed that "La mamma morte" from Philadelphia is not the Maria Callas version. There might be other cases like this, I'm not sure. And "Unchained Melody" from Ghost is an orchestral version, not the pop song (but I consider this a plus). This collection seems to focus on the subtle and quirky, yet melodic music of indie films, with less emphasis on the loud sweeping orchestral scores of major Hollywood hits, but of course there are a few like Gladiator and Braveheart, which are welcome here because like I've said, I probably wouldn't listen to the whole score. I love the two Thomas Newman compositions from American Beauty, and it's good to have some music from films by the Cohen Brothers here. My only complaint would have to be the order of the songs. You would think they would avoid jumping back and forth between pop songs, orchestral scores, and quiet music, but it just seems thrown together by random. I would compare this collection to the excellent "Miramax Films Greatest Hits" but the makers of that album knew to group the two pop/rock songs at the end.

OH my GOD!!! As soon as I purchased this disc, it has been in HEAVY rotation. This CD has a song for every mood and everybody. And "Thrasher" will make anyone think of shaking their boss!!!

Compilation release.......2005-11-24

This release is a remastering of the two previous releases: Sweet Power of Song and On Wings of Song. Both original CDs are still available if you hunt for them. The original releases do have the texts included in the booklets (lamented by a previous reviewer of this compilation release). The lack of text is not a problem for me. I just listen to these incredible singers. I don't need to read what they are singing.

If you even slightly enjoy listening to the soprano voice, you will love these two luscious singers. Soprano duets are among my favorite classical music selections. Lott's clear, strong voice rings with authority and joy. Murray provides perfect harmony and occasional counterpoint.

I prefer the first disk (Sweet Power of Song) because it is more balanced and seems to represent the sopranos' favorite selections. However, disk 2 (On Wings of Song) has Rossini's delightful Cat Duet which is worth the price of both CDs as performed by this amazing duo.

Whether you buy this compilation set or the individual releases, I promise that you will love them and keep them near your player all the time.

Text Translations Please!.......2002-01-11

Musically, I give this double CD set 5 stars. I love the warm soprano of Felicity Lott and the beautiful mezzo of Ann Murray. They always are a pleasure to listen to, each on their own, and together, they make music that is, more than simply beautiful and technically impeccable, but truly a joy to listen to. It adds so much to musical enjoyment to understand what the lyrics are, however, so rather than buying this double CD set, for which the text translations have been stingily omitted by the label, I would recommend buying each of them separately. I bought this CD set not realizing that one of the two CDS is one that I had bought previously, and been enjoying for many years. It is entitled "On Wings of Song" and the texts and the translations are all included. I highly recommend buying it. I don't know under what title the other CD might have been released. If you are so fluent in foreign languages that the lack of translation does not bother you, then I would highly recommend this CD.
