All the elements that made this rap star great are already in place on this authoritative debut, released when he was not even yet of drinking age. "Young Black Male" and "Trapped" exemplify his more overtly political style, later abandoned when he signed up with the Death Row label; "Crooked Ass Nigga" is the kind of violent gangsta-rap tune that made 2Pac a bogeyman to the genre's foes. On "I Don't Give a Fuck," Shakur keeps his humor up while conveying the oppressive reaction a young black male encounters while performing the most mundane of tasks: buying some chips. "Brenda's Got a Baby" is a cautionary tale that shows Shakur at his poetic best: evocative and sympathetic, never condescending. Lyrically, this is 2pac's best work as an album..........2007-07-29

Sure, there were some nice tracks,lyrically, that 2pac spit some really nice lines...but this album is full of that. This is by no means his best album, but he was still hungry to spit some lyrically ****. Let's break it down...

We start off with the intro-kind of track, "Young Black Male". 2pac spits his fastest verse in his career. Very nice way to start off this album. It leaves you to want more though cause its barely a minute long verse. Next is "Trapped". Definitely not ment to be on the radio, he outlashes at the world, which is normal for this CD. "Soulja's Story" is one of my favorites from this CD. It is a first of the many 'Soulja' songs that 2pac made throughout his career. I love how 2pac got creative and tried to play two characters. I wish he would've done more like this. Perfect song. "I Don't Give A ****". Probably some have heard this one from playing San Andreas. This is 2pac at his angriest, you can tell from his lyrics, voice and especially the outro. Unknown Pogo shined on this track. No chorus or hook, 2pac and Pogo go for more than three minutes with solid verses. "Ain't this a b****/All I wanted was some chips". Great track. "Violent", 2pac spits one of my favorites verses from him. He tells a story in second and third verses, nicely done. Goes over six minutes, amazing job done. "Words of Wisdom" is just that. Personally, I don't really like this but 2pac puts out some nice words, at the same time he's still an angry man. Especially the breaks between his verses. "Something Wicked" is in the same note as the first song on this album, but not really fast flow all the way through. It can get annoying listening to this, but the verse and 2pac's flow with this beat go nicely together. "Crooked A** N****" is very street feel. Good idea to use NWA samples as the chorus. "If My Homie Calls" is the funky track that 2pac tells his homies that he's always there for them. Good feel track. "Brenda's Got a Baby", you've probably heard of. Ask your parents about this, they'll probably remember this one too. Telling a story about a young single mother, that threw away the baby because she couldn't take it. She gets killed in the end after her drug addiction and as s prostitute. Sad touching song, an album highlight. No chorus or hook except at the beginning and as an outro. Based on a true story as well. "Tha' Lunatic" and "Rebel of the Underground" are both wacky, relaxing tracks moving away from the rest of the album's angry feel. "Part Time Mutha" ends the album on a sad, touching note. 2pac's verses is noting his mother's addiction, its basically Dear Mama Part I. Though, the second verse, some female rapper talks about her father being a "nasty old man", which you get what she means by the rest of her verse. Its sucks that the beat couldn't have been more touching like Dear Mama. The chorus is singing and the verses are very nice...

Closing Comments: If you're a fan of 2pac, then I wonder why you haven't gotten this album already. If you wanna get into 2pac, I suggest Me Against The World about this. Overall, its a great album, though its not flawless and there's some really weak tracks. 2pac did not have an amazing debut like Rakim, Nas, Jay-Z, Wu-Tang or Biggie, among others, it was still a great debut. 4 stars.

A very decent start.......2007-04-10

Unlike Snoop Dogg, Biggie, Nas etc, it took Pac 2 albums to get to classic. But this album is still a good effort. While production lacks a fare bit on most tracks, Pac's very intelligent rhyming and story telling make this well worth listening to. Its certainly alot different to his others but i still recommend it well. It is unfortunate that like "The Main Man" said, it wasn't appreciated until years after his sad passing.

INSTANT CLASSIC MATERIAL.......2007-03-23

Tupac Amaru Shakur's definitive album was released in 1991. Beginning as a roadie and backup dancer for Digital Underground, this album was released right on time...almost immediately after Tupac became a "role model" for today's youth as Bishop in the movie Juice. This album is a perfect picture and description of America's most infamous Young Black Male with song after song of lyrical poetry of heartache and pain. Personally, Tupac created his own sub-genre in hip hop....even though there were "political" figures in hip hop such as X-Clan and Public Enemy. Tupac may have quite possibly revolutionized and simplified the politics of America for the youth to relate to(even though he never intended to be an icon)...his message came across more razor sharp than any of his predecessors. Most of the production by Digital Underground's Shock G and backed by a lyrical arsenal that couldnt possibly be matched makes this "required reading" for anyone looking to aspire as a hip hop artist.

Lyrically Pac's best album to me........2007-01-08

This is Pac's most conscious,lyrical and influential album to me before he switched over heavily for the thug. The sad thing is, this album was greatly appreciated way after he died.

If one was to say which Tupac album (made while he was alive) they thought was his best it would depend alot one what Tupac they favoured. If your favourite is the political/raw Pac than you'd say either this or Strictly For My N.I.G.G.A.Z. If your favourite is the very poetic and remorseful Pac than you'd say Me Against The World. If your favourite was the thugged out Pac than you'd say All Eyez On Me. And if your favourite was the dark yet emotional Pac than you'd say The Don Killuminati. As for me, I don't have a favourite. I just love all of Pac's albums the same and can listen to them all day. There is simply no other rapper who influenced rap better than Pac did. I don't really know what's been happening to rap lately I mean all these wannabes like Ja Rule and Lil Jon. That's the reason why there are alot of people who dislike rap. They think its all like the stuff flodding the markets today. But if they listened to albums like this and learned about what rap originally was all about than i'm sure they'd think differently about it. Onto the album, its lyrically fantastic. Some people think its bad from some poor production. Well rap isn't about the beats its supposed to be about the lyrics. And one this album we have the ghetto story Brenda's Got A Baby that doesn't hesitate to extract a tear from one's eye, more interesting stories in Trapped, Soulja's Story and Violent that discuss police brutality, Words Of Wisdom were he accuses America of assault, rape etc and more.
