White People [Explicit Lyrics]

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
After a five-year hiatus, superstar producers Prince Paul (De La Soul) and Dan the Automator (Gorillaz) join forces again, assembling an even more eclectic and arguably more rewarding sequel to 1999's So… How's Your Girl? Most producer-based albums suffer from guest overload, and certainly Handsome Boy has a challenge in juggling over 25 different cameos, ranging from Del Tha Funkee Homosapien to Barrington Levy to Pharrell Williams to Cat Power to John Oates to… you get the idea. Yet they thrown down with such creative aplomb that you're just thankful to have a ticket for the ride. The vibe jumps from the soulful slide of "Breakdown" (feat. Jack Johnson) to the high-powered hip-hop of "If It Wasn't for You" (feat. De La Soul and Starchild Excalibur) to the indescribably dense "Rock and Roll (Could Never Hip Hop Like This) Part 2," which includes DJ Qbert, Lord Finesse, and Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda among other guests. There's so much to digest as Paul and Dan stock the album with a wide range of treats, and each listen reveals something new and delightful. --Oliver Wang

5 out of 5 stars Since I've graduated the Handsome Boy Modeling School.......2007-05-07

It is a fantastic album, a nice collection of artists are put together by Prince Paul and Dan the Automator, good beats, good skits. It instantly became one of my favorite cds. Was blown away when I heard a Jack Johnson song over a beat. Some songs are hit and miss, but I would recommend this cd to anybody that likes hip-hop

5 out of 5 stars Etiquette is the backbone of the Handsome Boy Modeling School.......2006-09-12

If as a handsome, yet style-less man, you are finding you need pointers on when to and when not to fart, how to wash yourself, where to wash yourself, how to seize a handkerchief modeling gig, and many other well-needed tips, then White People is for you!

Hip-hop, trip-hop, hip-hopera, old school, new school, whatever, it doesn't apply here, or maybe it all applies here. Enjoy this! Get it! Try not to be encumbered by the need to categorize it. Let this and the first HBMS as well as Lovage, as well as almost anything by Dan Nakamura into your ear-holes, babies! The cowaberation of Nakamura and the extended De La Soul family, Del the Funky Homosapien, and many others is really something to behold.

The celebrity voice-overs by Tim Meadows and Don Novell are great accompaniment. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll feel groovy. Come and get some.

5 out of 5 stars The best record of 2004.......2005-12-25

Everything about this is perfect..ok a few of the skits could go. The actual songs - those are perfect. From The opening sample of if it wasn't for you, the incredible mike patton song right after.. Amazing piano in class system. I can't get the mars volta song on here out of my head.. The best part is that when mars volta or ..linkin park is on a track..it sounds nothing like their own bands.. Prince paul and dan the automator are badass. I'm ranting.

5 out of 5 stars an album that is worthy of listening to.......2005-12-20

I have not listened to the first album by HBMS (So...How's Your Girl?) so i have nothing to compare this to. The fact that "White People" features the RZA, Pharell, and The Mars Volta is enough of a reason to give this album a chance. Along with the skilled musicians there are some unworthy musicians featured in these recordings, but they did not make this album hard to listen to. They actually helped me gain a little more respect for them. All together this is a compilation of many different genres of music. They all fit together very well. I would reccomend this to anyone who is into pretty chill rock or jazz and who also respects good hip-hop and rap.

5 out of 5 stars Dan and Prince Paul have done it again!.......2005-06-17

God I love these two! Together they bring forth brilliant records....I know alot of people who were dissappointed in this, their latest offering but, for the love of all things good, they've put an an album called "White People" and got MIKE PATTON on board! MIKE PATTON!!!!
Once again this duo has created an album that flows from start to finish. Each and every song is original and new. I can't wait for them to do it again.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

Please buy it.

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

5 out of 5 stars Unexpected Gem.......2005-12-10

A few years ago I took a chance on buying this album from Amazon and I've been glad I did ever since. The Emmanuel College Choir is not as well known as some of the other Cambridge choirs but they are on a par with the best of them. This choir has both male and female singers. The sound is pure and the diction is crystal clear. The musical selections are wonderful and include many less familiar songs as well as the old favorites. The choir does a good job in moving from more reverent songs to joyous ones. It's hard to single out any work but "Bethlehem Down" and "The Shepherd's Farewell" are especially beautiful. There are also some very fine solos in some of the songs. If you're wondering if you should buy this album, do yourself a favor and do it!

      Product Description

The debut effort from this Alabama string band unfolds like a long, pleasantly exhausting evening at a contradance: The tunes are presented mostly in medleys (so as to avoid boredom on both the dancers' and the band's part) and are generally upbeat without being frenetic. The group's instrumentation is a little unusual: Strict traditionalists may not approve of the harmonica or, heaven knows, the banjo ukulele in place of the traditional open-back five-string banjo played clawhammer style. But the twin fiddles of Ed Baggott and Jim Cauthen (mainly playing in unison but occasionally separating into lovely harmony lines) carry the tunes with a sound that is as deeply traditional as any in American music, and if you can listen to these performances without dancing around the room you may need your pulse checked. Highlights include the incongruously beautiful "Muddy Creek/Dead Slave" medley and a very nice rendition of the classic "Rose of Alabama," sung and played on the autoharp by Bill Martin. A must for old-timey music fans.

I just got this in yeterday along with 2 others i orderd. I absolutly love it. I have been a manson song for as long as i can remember and i love to hear there music portraid so well. Although there are some songs that i thought could have been added , i still love the songs they coverd.

        4 out of 5 stars No Title.......2004-02-27

This CD is pretty good, but, as has been said by quite a few people, the song choices could have been better. They should have just completely left out the PoaAF songs, as they don't go to strings well. "A Place in the Dirt" and "Speed of Pain" were great choices because they fit the style of the insturments playing the parts, "The Nobodies" and "Man That You Fear" may have been other selections they may have wanted to put on the CD. Other than that, the CD was fantastic.

3 out of 5 stars its ok but............2003-10-08

i dont know, the idea of doing a string version of manson's greatest songs is a damn good idea. However, it was not pulled off as well as id hoped. when listening to these tracks, i always got the feeling that something was missing, while each song is tabbed to near perfection, the overall package still seemed kind of cheap.

i dont know if its the musician's fault, bad or equipment or just simply done intentionally, alot of the string insturements give off a scratchy tone while leading which does not sound good.

another complain is the choice of songs, some were great choices, but when leading mansons vocal parts, the melody becomes bland and makes you wish that that part was just taken out.

overall, lots of effort was put into this and it is good, but just feels like much more could have been done

5 out of 5 stars My thought on the Cd.......2003-06-20

In this CD Marilyn Manson Portrays a different Image, I myself have been a Manson fan since the 7th grade, this CD gives his musci new meanings and shows he truly is an ecclectic Artist when he can take his area of hard gothic rock and transform it to this wonderful symphony. I highly consider all Manson Fans to purchase this Item.

        3 out of 5 stars Wonder-ful........2003-05-05

The album cover is very... stupid, to be blunt. It's really not what I think of when I think of these songs or Marilyn Manson but the string covers are excellent, despite the fact that these songs are probably the most repetitive or weakest choices they could have made excepting the 'Place In The Dirt' song. Most of them are overplayed and outplayed in concert, or done to death in live albums, dvds, vhs, or cover cds, well, here they are again! It doesn't breathe new life into songs that have lost their magic some years ago, but it's fun for awhile. There could easily have been more music or better selection. ...

        I'm Not In Love - 10cc
Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe - Barry White
Let's Stay Together - Al Green

I'd say all the tracks are very representative of the 70's and so the track selections are impeccable. The sound qualiy is okay but given the quality of what's out there at the moment, it would be ideal if this whole album could be given a proper remastering treatment to clean up the sound.

          Album Description

Ernst Bacon was one of that pioneering generation of composers, along with Thomson, Copland, Harris and others, who found a voice for American music. Born in Chicago on May 26, 1898, his Austrian mother gave him a love of song and an early start on the piano. Although his varied career included appearances as pianist and conductor, along with teaching and directing positions, his deepest preoccupation was always composing. His musical awards included a Pulitzer Fellowship in 1932 for his Symphony in D Minor and three Guggenheim Fellowships.

As a composer, Bacon belonged to no “school” and followed no fads. He was largely self-taught in composition, except for two years study with Karl Weigl in Vienna in the early '20s. While there, he experienced the depression of post-war Europe first hand and concluded that the European avant-garde movement, reflecting the pessimism of that era and region, was not appropriate to America. Returning to Chicago, he set out to write music that expressed the vitality and affirmation of our own country.

At the age of nineteen, while majoring in mathematics at Northwestern University, Bacon wrote a complex treatise exploring all possible harmonies, which was published by The Open Court Publishing Company (“Our Musical Idiom,” The Monist, October 1917). However, when he began to compose music in his twenties, he rejected a cerebral approach, taking the position that music is an art, not a science. He felt that its source should be intuitive and imaginative, rather than abstract and analytical.

From his first job as opera coach at the Eastman School in the mid '20s, he went on to receive a master's degree from the University of California at Berkeley and to teach at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music under Ernest Bloch. During

the '30s he was director of the WPA Federal Music Project and Orchestra in San Francisco and was a founder of the Carmel Bach Festival. From 1938 to 1945 he headed the School of Music at Converse College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, where he established the New Spartanburg Music Festival. At Syracuse University, he was director of the School of Music from 1945 to 1947 and composer-in-residence and professor of piano until his retirement in 1963.

In 1964 he returned to the West, settling in the small town of Orinda, California, east of the Berkeley hills. Here, as everywhere else, he drew his greatest inspiration from nature, jotting down notes as he explored local trails. His fertile imagination and constant creative efforts left little time for self-promotion, and although nearly blind in old age, he continued to compose until the very end of his ninety-one years.

Throughout his long career, Ernst Bacon's chief aim as a composer was to express the spirit of America in music as Whitman, Emerson, Melville and others had done in literature. He was deeply immersed in our country's history and folklore, as well as its indigenous music; and was inspired by the poetry, folk songs, jazz rhythms and geography of America as well as the landscape itself—which he hiked, climbed and also painted. All of these elements found their way into his music.

Those who influenced Bacon included Carl Sandburg, Thornton Wilder and Roland Hayes. Bacon's music expresses the common touch and humor of Sandburg; the profound simplicity of Wilder; and the melodic beauty that Roland Hayes expressed so movingly in his singing. As with Schubert, a large body of more than 250 art songs is the heart of an oeuvre that also includes numerous chamber, orchestral and choral works, as well as descriptive pieces for piano.

In 1998 numerous vocal-chamber concerts of Bacon's music were held in honor of his centennial. These events took place at Merkin Concert Hall in New York City; the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Massachusetts; Coolidge Auditorium at the Library of Congress; the Free Library of Philadelphia; Syracuse, New York; Evanston and Chicago, Illinois; also in Berkeley and Waln
