Madvillainy [Enhanced] [Explicit Lyrics]

Having re-invented himself as psychedelic masked rapper MF Doom (not to mention alter egos King Geedorah and Viktor Vaughn), Daniel Dumile--formerly KMD's Zev Love X--has fittingly teamed up with producer Madlib, who's no stranger to aliases himself (see Quasimodo, Yesterdays New Quintet). Rap formulas of the day are given the boot on Madvillainy; most of the 22 tracks clock in at around two minutes and many cuts consist of Doom spitting one long verse. Nobody chops up jazz standards and reworks them into SP 1200-induced soundscapes better than Madlib, so the warbled strings and unpredictable tempo shifts on "Strange Ways" and the flipped accordion sounds on "Accordion" carry the texture of a jazz record. While Madlib's predilection for piecing together cryptic found sounds can get a bit tiresome, Doom's self-deprecating narrative of a man "on a fast track to half-sane" is genius and madness all rolled into one big blunt. Yep, on "America's Most Blunted" he gloats about being "nominated for the best rolled L's." While "Rainbows" proves that Doom shouldn't ever sing--and yeah, his scratchy, drawling flow is an acquired taste--he's still "got more lyrics than the church's got 'Oooh Lords.'" This is rap for frying your brain cells, and we all know they need a good cooking every now and then. --Dalton Higgins

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-07-05

This cd was the soundtrack for the "Kidnap Oprah" episode for the Boondocks. The show was hilarious and this cd enhanced the plot. Awesome indeed.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Dope.......2007-06-30

Let me start of by saying that I am a REAL BIG FAN of almost any kind of hiphop/rap music. I am sure alot of people probobly own this album by now. It's just another project that MF Doom and Madlib decided to do. I am glad Doom teamed up with Stones Throw. I like how Doom always gives you something DIFFERENT. That is why I support him and what he does. Great lyrics by Doom, also Madlib does all the beats. And if you don't know who Madlib is then you shouldn't have this album. Great Release and goes good in the collection.

5 out of 5 stars All Rap No Hooks.......2007-06-29

This may be one of the most unique Hip Hop albums I've ever heard. Mainly because in a world where the hook is really taking over in Hip Hop we get a MC that truly knows the meaning of the word. MF DOOM brings out some real rhymes to show that Hip Hop is more than Beats and Hooks. All the songs are shortened because there are no hooks just Doom killing it on just about every track. On some of the other tracks Madlib adds some really hot instrumentals like "Sickfit" and "Theme", the instrumentals were put in nicely at the right times and not smothered together. I love the way these songs are arranged, it's be like where you would usually expect the hook gets replaced with either another song or more hot lyrics. This is a perfect album, there are skits but they're put in perfect spots so they don't overcrowd the album and Madlib's production and DOOM's lyrics are certainly on point. I wish MC's would make albums like this again like the way Pete Rock and CL Smooth were where there is just a rapper and a producer. Guys these days get carried away with production and hooks and ruin the album with their lame lyrics. My favorite tracks have to be "Fancy Clown" and "All Caps" but this entire album is perfect, it is very hard for me to pick a favorite. This is a perfect album to get, so perfect that I overpaid for it, which I never do for anything but I had to have this. I don't really care now cause the album is so hot. I would recommend this to anybody getting tired of the so very commercial music out right now.

5 out of 5 stars Got Hip Hop?.......2007-06-01

Now this is pure bedroom closet studio type underground. From the second you insert Madvillainy, you feel like you're listening to the narration of a marvel comic book with Doom's taste; definately creative. Its Def, matter fact, why dont we say 'def' anymore, well I'ma use it in this case to tell yall that this CD is DEF. Madlib supposedly did all the beats on the album, but it doesn't stray to far from Doom's natural sound. If you've never heard MF DOOM, the best way I can sum up his music is, ill poetic Mark Twain style rhyming over vintage sampled beats, very abstract compared to the current mainstream, but nonetheless will still keep you entertained. Doom show's his own level of creativity, and to me that's what raw hip hop really is. Buy ya'self a copy bro, you be the judge.
