Customer Reviews:
One of the most honest and original rap albums of all time.......2007-01-13
Usually, when I listen to rap I'm more into mainstream stuff. As an Eminem fan, I checked out Cage's diss of him "The Illest 4 letter word", and was pretty underwhelmed. It was hard to make out his lyrics, and even if they matched up if you strained your ears to listen, I didn't think he was anywhere near Eminem's class as a rapper.
I checked out this album almost as a joke, like when I checked out fellow Eminem-enemy Benzino's album, figuring it would be good for a laugh.
But it really surprised me. The bravado and posturing is gone, and now Cage just tells it like it is, going over his addictions and the abuse he suffered from his father and step-father as a child. It's a depressing album to listen to, but it paints its pictures with vivid detail.
This might upset people into underground, but writing for people into more mainstream stuff, this album might seem underwhelming at first. With the album being as confessional as it is, Cage sounds lost and and insecure at times, so it isn't the confident, arrogant style of rap you might be used to. While the Def Jux production style is unique, the mixing and mastering on the recording doesn't have the same sparkle and sheen that say, a dr.dre record would have.
But look past these thing, and look at this album as being different from a mainstream record, rather than just being not as good as one. Once I got used to the style this album sucked me right in, and it was easily my favorite album of 2005, in any genre.
A great album, hip-hop or otherwise.......2007-01-11
I'm not a hip-hop fanatic; I listen to a very wide variety of artists crossing many genres and categories. That said, this is a very impressive album, hip-hop or otherwise. Intelligent, original and creative, it showcases Cage's wide range of abilities and styles. The music is extremely listenable and the lyrics are smart and engaging on most tracks. A couple tracks felt a bit flat and/or pandering, hence 4 out of 5 stars.
This album was originally recommended to me by a friend, so I downloaded it via a P2P site. I liked it enough to buy it for the friend who recommended it (they having only heard someone else's copy) and burned a copy for myself. I got into it enough that I wanted to support the artist as well as own the real thing, so I purchased it proper.
cage is no good live?.......2006-06-25
your city must suck...i just saw him rock ann arbor
everybody on the bill was just hyped...people gotta realise that artists feed off the energy of the crowd, if you just stand around with your arms folded they're not gonna put on a good show. if you get hype and start mosh pits, they're gonna give you their all
Cage fell off.......2006-03-06
I'm sorry but I liked Cage's earlier stuff. Movies for the Blind was great and so was his other dark stuff. Unfortunitely now he's turned into a soft little p---y. I seriously miss the old Cage and I hope Cage makes another dark album. This on the other hand is a total letdown and is not good at all.
Def Jux is Back! (not like they really left).......2006-01-25
Musicians always use their art as a way to exorcise their inner demons. Cage has more than most, some thanks to his own doing and some from factors out of his control. He took control of his life and showed the demons that they had to leave him. He quite the drugs, quite the junk food, quite the rock-n-roll lifestyle altogether. He found a label that believed in him and could give him what he needed musically (and financially), with no restraints. That is what "Hell's Winter" is; Cage in his purest and truest form speaking on his life. No more misogyny, no more acid trips, mo more over the top shock and awe rap. Whether airing out his issues with EC (Public Property #12), airing out his issues with the current administration (Grand Ol' Party Crash #3) or just wylin out with his weatherman crew (Left It to Us #11), Cage is a transformed man. He confronted what had been done to him in the past and took responsibility for what he has done in the past, and wrote about it. Not only did he write about it but he brought it to life. The combination of him and El-P is amazing. El delivers some of his most symphonic beats yet. They are just as full of life as the verses Caged penned for them. On top of that El is just a little connected and brought in some friends. DJ Shadow makes a very special appearance with his crazy drum programming. Blockhead just blows your mind with his contributions finding the most subtle, and beautiful combinations of strings, horns, and drums. RJ is here in typical fashion with the MTV ready "Shoot Frank" with an unbelievable hook sung by Darryl Palumbo. The bottom line is one emcee had an opportunity to create something special, and while most would cower at that challenge he took it head on and delivered something right back that no one would have ever predicted.

This auspicious, surprising, release debuted the Winter & Winter imprimatur, which carries on German producer Stefan Winter's longstanding role in blurring musical boundaries, as he did for so many years with the jazz label JMT. Pianist Uri Caine, known mainly for playing in the polystylistic mode of New York's downtown jazz scene, steeped himself in Mahler's music in preparation for the 1995 series of concerts leading up to this CD. Caine's ensemble--14 members strong, at points--recasts portions of Mahler's symphonic cloudbursts into a setting that smacks of klezmer, jazz, and crazy combinations of the scores' lavish bombastics. It's clear that Mahler's works tested the boundaries of so many available sounds at the turn of the century, from cantors to martial brass to Wagnerian bulk. Caine attempts it all, succeeding most somberly in the sections based on the Resurrection Symphony and most clangorously in the First Symphony's third movement, transformed into a serious klezmer bash by Caine, clarinetist Don Byron, and drummer Joey Baron. --Andrew Bartlett
Customer Reviews:
jaw-dropping interpretation of Mahler.......2006-12-03
I am a Mahler fan - and I don't like jazz! So I was rather nervous at listening to this first time around. But I found it simply stunning. The resurrection symphony slow movement, complete with screeching solo violin emulating a searingly distorted electric guitar was, in fact, profoundly moving. And the sheer musicianship of the performers, in the more sensitive sections earned my utmost respect. This album is shocking, unbearable, gripping, lighthearted, exciting, mocking, reverential, tender - everything Mahler was. Fantastic buy!
Mahler revered.......2006-11-16
On his 1997 release Urlicht / Primal Light, Uri Caine took some of Gustav Mahler's most famous compositions, and, well, jazzed them up, with some of the most prominent musicians on the downtown New York scene, including Dave Douglas and Joey Baron.
What still surprises me about this beautiful album is just how faithful Caine is to Mahler. Unlike his later Goldberg Variations, this isn't Mahler deconstructed, it's Mahler revered, in a small group jazz (and at times, thanks to Don Byron , klezmer) setting. It makes perfect sense -- if some of the greatest jazz performances have come from mediocre show tunes, why not use symphonies and lieder as a starting point for improvisation?
Uri Caine's mutiny against Mahler.......2006-09-30
I've been a big Mahler fan since Bernstein's first recording (4th Symphony) as well as a knowledgeable follower of jazz. These pieces are grotesque caricatures of Mahler melodies and while I have not heard Caine's other depredations, after listening to this one I think I'll pass. If this is something released after a jam session that somehow was rescued from the cutting room floor, my apologies. But Mahler's melodies do not belong in a setting like this and who is Caine to try to improve on Mahler's orchestrations? Save your money.
raw, gritty and fertile freshly tilled earth.......2005-12-13
it's not pure as in so many anally treated works of Mahler. admittedly i am not interested in listening to see if the sonority of the instruments is perfect to some pompous standard, and it's not but there is another dedication here and an unmeasurable energy. i love the youthfulness of this work.
The New quintessential performance of Mahler.......2005-07-06
This is the story i was told when buying this record, it's been many years so this is as close as i could remember it:
"There is an annual competition where orchestras from all over the world come together to perform Mahler pieces. It's been going many many years... then along came Uri Caine. His orchestra included Cantors (jewish religious singers) and a cacophony of other messy instruments and ideas to perform with. They won to competition to the horror of stuffy stuck-up Mahler purists the world over.. How could this horrible mess win over all ther other very traditional (very similar and boring) performances!? Uri Caine's orchestra has continued to win every year since. Why? Because Uri's interpretation gives a fuller understanding of Gustav Mahlers background, his roots, he brings so much life to the music."
So then i actually listened to the music myself and it was breathtaking, funny, it told stories, it had personality, it was bursting at the seams with new ideas.
I listen to all kinds of music, but rarely jazz and rarely classical. I was not familiar with Uri Caine or Gustav Mahler, but after hearing that story, then listening for myself i had to have this cd. And while often my purchases are terrible mistakes, this one was a resounding success. This cd is my most treasured.

One of the best.......2006-12-03
Awesome album. The production is top notch. The last track, Hell's Winter, is one of the best tracks I've ever heard production-wise. It's thick and layered, like almost everything else on this album. A couple of the songs fall short though, such as "Subtle Art of the Breakup Song", which is great but just has an unfinished feel to it. And tracks 11 and 12 feel a bit like filler, lacking in quality compared to the rest of the album (save the Aesop Rock appearance). And a few of the tracks get political, but even if you're not into that the production saves it. It's not a perfect album, but the production alone makes it worth every cent, and I like this album better than Movies for the Blind as a whole, even if that one might have been slightly better lyrically. Definitely go out and grab this if you haven't already.
Great album make sure to steal it if need be........2005-10-29
Well I loved this album and I am on the watch for it at the store when I heard J.Hilliards thing on his list of the top albums of 2005 I thought that be nuts to have Cage so high on his list because he is primarily known for entertainment value.Instead I heard the CD and heard nothing but strait Butta
the beats were by a group who is lead by El-P and Cage changed up his style and made a increddibally dope album in my book.
One of the 2 albums so far as of 10/28/2005 that gets a 5 Mic rating from me that was released this year.
Not what I expected........2005-10-07
Movies For The Blind is one of the top ten best hip-hop records ever made. In Stoney Lodge is perhaps one of the most empowering/gut wrenching songs about bipolar disorder ever recorded. Agent Orange, while not new for the disk, is an excellent use of A Clockwork Orange imagery. The list goes on and on. So why then did this album fall flat? On one hand Def Jux is warping him to fit there new "politically conscious" label image and turning him into an Eminem knock off (which is ridiculous because Eminem bit cage's style hard) just listen to peeranoia, and on the other Cage is not the angry twenty something he once was. Cage is now on the thirty year old patient who wants to get sober, and get his life straight. In that sense the album works, it is pretty honest at times. Yet I feel that this somewhat contradicts what happened with Movies. He makes the apology, "everything I said on Movies because of my buzz." This hurts his credibility as an artist. And a line like "this time around I'm just one of you fu8king depressed kids." who is he, Slug? I don't feel the album lived up to the impossible standards set by Movies, yet I am interested to see where he takes this new angle. Overall, it's worth a look, but nothing special.
Cage's best...definitely worth buying........2005-10-06
Any independent hip-hop head is probably already familiar with Cage, and this album is by far his best solo. It is not nearly as insane and tortured as Movies for the Blind, but it does provide insight to the factors that made Cage what he is. Here is a track listing:
1.) Good Morning 8/10 This is one of the stronger tracks on the album, a head-nodding New York anthem produced by El-P, with El-P also performing the hook.
2.) Too Heavy For Cherubs 9/10 A very dark song about how Cage's father used to force him to help him shoot heroin.
3.) Grand Ol' Party Crash 9/10 A great bush-basher, goes into some pretty morbid detail about troops in Iraq.
4.) The Death of Chris Palko 6/10 Ehh. No real subject matter here, but it's salvaged by a great beat from Camu and El-P.
5.) Stripes 10/10 Best track on the album. A very dark song about Cage's parents, his abusive father especially, with an excellent beat by Blockhead.
6.) Shoot Frank 7/10 Starts out great, Cage's rapping is great, but it's ruined by an awful hook which drags on for over a minute.
7.) Scenester 6/10 OK song about a girl who cuts herself, again ruined by an awful hook.
8.) Perfect World 6/10 Same deal as track 4. Great beat, not much substance.
9.)Subtle Art 9/10 Darkest song on the album. A great example of Cage's twisted imagery.
10.) Peeranoia 7/10 Pretty good song about Cage's drug problems and trying to live sober.
11.) Left It To Us 8/10 This is the track that you blast in your car. Not the best on the album, but still extremely tight.
12.) Public Property 9/10 Great song about Cage's problems with Eastern Conference, and a great beat by Camu Tao.
13.) Lord Have Mercy 6/10 A little f*cked up and meaningless, but still good. It would make a great music video.
14.) Hell's Winter 8/10 Title track's always good.
The album is great, and the instrumental disc with UMIXIT software is a great bonus. The software is a hell of a lot of fun to play around with, even if you don't produce. I hope Def jux keeps going with this UMIXIT, cause it sure as hell gets me to buy their limited editions.

For starters, there are no bagpipes on this weird and wonderful mix of 17th- and 18th-century music arranged for lute, ceterone, viola da gamba, and lyra viol. But the playing by Vittorio Ghielmi and Luca Pianca (founder of the Giardino Armonico ensemble) on Bagpipes from Hell will have you fooled that something wheezy is at work here. It's an odd mix of dances, including jigs, and folk-inspired numbers ("Brown Haired Maiden," anyone?) that somehow blends the droning elements of bagpipes and hurdy-gurdy with the intricate delicacy of baroque composition. Works by Marin Marais, Christopher Simpson, Antoine Forqueray, and anonymous composers are included, and the playing throughout is intense and exquisitely recorded. Unfortunately, the slim liner notes on the gorgeous Winter & Winter disc don't help to explain why this assortment of music works (and the scary Hieronymous Bosch painting does little more than intimidate), but it's still easy to love. Whether traditional (Simpson's "Ground Divisions") or interpreted (the anonymous 17th-century tune "Bagpipes," where metal strings are used), this is beautiful, seldom-heard music--a little darker than that on most baroque discs, but just as delightful. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
This's one of the finest offerings I've heard this Winter!!!.......2005-03-07
You can laugh about the title. The musicianship is a work of art. Not real bagpipes, either, eh? You've just been charmed. The viols and lute add character to this recording. I just count my lucky stars I was a trust fund baby... 'cause you know this music was created for royalty.
Vittorio Ghielmi and Luca Pianca - Bagpipes from hell.......2000-11-25
