5 out of 5 stars Love Me, Tracie!!.......2007-01-12

"Love Me" (my fav from this set) alone is worth getting this album.

Strong beginning ("This House") and actually, this album rides right along nicely with "Save You Love", the first single then dips into the sensual groove with "Tender Kisses" without un-packing any dance floor all while making a consious statement about homelessness and interracial dating with the video for "Tender Kisses". "This Time, (Make It Funky)" marks Tracie's 'rapping' debut, but as fun and dancable as the song is, hopefully she won't be doing a Michael Jordan/Baseball move. And of course, we wind down to the "Love Me" which is sure to pack more bedrooms than dancefloors (as it did when I was hanging out listening to R&B with my friends in 1992). The music arrangements alone grab you before being fully embraced by the suductive delivery of Ms Spencer while still a minor. Classic R&B love song!!

Pick this CD up NOW!! Tracies best set yet!!

3 out of 5 stars Back In The Day.......2006-12-31

Before Aaliyah took you back and forth, Brandy wanted to be down and Monica had one of them days, you had two of the best young singers in Tracie Spencer and Shanice. Tracie Spencer clearly had a voice beyond her years, and "Make The Difference" does just that. Standout tracks include the early 90's smash hits "This House" and "Tender Kisses", plus Honourable Mentions like "Love Me" and "This Time Make It Funky". This was the young singer at her best.

WOW, Tender Kisses was GREATTTTTTTTTTTT! What ever happen to Tracy Spencer? That one song alone, along with the video is the BOMB, diggity! :-)

Tracie was such a role model when this album was released. She had talent and mass appeal. I miss that in today's teen market.
She was an award winning songwriter for the hit single "Tender Kisses" which is still impressive for a young black woman. I loved that song when I was getting tenderly kissed in those days. This album is dated for the most part but the nostalgia factor is high enough for a buy and a listen if you are of those who Tracie moved and got moving back in the early 90's

2 out of 5 stars Hardly worth mentioning.......2004-11-23

Bonds of Friendship was released back in 1988 or '89. There was a pretty hopping straight edge scene in OC at that time. I myself had fallen out of the SE way of life by then, but I still kept a close eye and ear on the scene. I was writing for a fanzine at the time and I reviewed this album; I panned it for being exceedingly generic, uninspired, bland, boring, etc. It was as if they'd read a text book titled "How To Be A Straight Edge Hardcore Band" and did everything the book told them to do, but didn't bother to even attempt to come up with any fresh ideas on their own. They did nothing but regurgitate what tons of bands had done and said before, and they couldn't even make it the least bit interesting. Worst of all, they were sickeningly positive to a fault... completely ineffectual and without any "edge" at all. To say they played it safe and pandered to the scene is a gross understatement. A while later I saw an interview with the lead singer "Kevinsted" where my review was brought up and Kevin claimed it was invalid, since straight edge "isn't [that fanzine's] thing." I've always wanted to respond publicly that straight edge WAS my thing at the time, and I knew what I was talking about. Might as well do it here, 15 years late or not.

To see examples of bands who played the mid to late '80s So Cal Straight Edge scene and brought something new to the table, look for records by bands like Half Off, Visual Discrimation, Inside Out, Virulence, Excel etc. Hell, even Uniform Choice's 2nd album is more worthwhile than this.

4 out of 5 stars Good Covers Of Druggie Tunes.......2007-03-17

Way back in 1989, the Make A Difference Foundation convinced some (at the time) prominent hair metal and hard rock bands to cover some of their favorite rock songs from bands who had members die due to drug use. Money raised from the project would then be used by the foundation to fight drug addiction. It was a great idea at the time but it's funny that many of the bands on this album were actively using drugs at the time.

None of the covers are that bad. The best songs, in my opinion, include Gorky Park's "My Generation," the Scorpion's "I Can't Explain," and Ozzy's "Purple Haze." Cinderella's version of Janis Joplin's "Move Over" is also excellent. Other bands on the album include Bon Jovi, Motley Crue and Skid Row. There's also a drummer's delight in "Drum Madness" and highlights from a Moscow music festival.

Overall, it's not a shabby album. The live performances are pretty forgettable, but the album's other tunes are worthy of multiple listenings. If you really love hair metal and hard rock like I do, you'll be just fine purchasing this album.

3 out of 5 stars A once hard to find title now easily available!.......2006-05-10

Yep, back in the day - well, pretty much straight after it's release - this was darn hard to get hold of. But now the wonders of the internet blah blah blah allow you to get your your hands on your own copy of this little gem.

But don't get too excited over it just yet. Since nobody else has reviewed the plain jane, non import version of this release, I'll give you a track by track synopsis.

Gorky Park - a bunch of Russians from memory cleaned up and passed off as some sort of 80's hair metal band. These boys were probably totally wide eyed at even getting a look in - some might have expected the Russian band Autograph to get the nod. But luckily for Gorky Park they sang in English. Here they do a take of My Generation. During the late 80's cold war whether they got the irony of this choice is unknown to me. They don't do a bad job if it though Who fans may roll in their graves.

Skid Row - These boys were on a high at the time and give us a rousing rendition of Holidays in the Sun, Sebastian Bach having the right amount of middle finger pull off the trick of taking this track from silly to kicking butt.

Scorpions - Can't Explain. The Scorps deliver here, in fact this track seems to suit them and by keeping it to a somewhat subdued delivery, they actually produce a better result that if they'd blazed away. It's even made 'best of' collections by the Scorps over the years.

Ozzy Osbourne - Yep, the Prince of Darkness was actually better known for his music and weird antics back when this was recorded, as opposed to being on a reality TV style show. Of course his vocals are totally different to Jimmy Hendrix but this track works, weirdly enough.

Motley Crue - A remarkably dumb band. And a fairly lacklustre run through of this cover tune. Any Crue completists out there thinking of buying this album for this track should really think again.

Bon Jovi - BJ were given some hassle even at the time for being particularly unadventurous. So to hear them do a Thin Lizzy track, well it's kinda different. They actually managed to give it 'the old college try', but it's still a fairly average track.

Cinderella - Move Over, the track Cinderella contributed to this exercise, is totally forgettable. In my personal opinion the original wasn't worth much, and their version of it is pretty poor. Avoid.

Drum Madness - By this stage of the disc, if your still listening you'll actually be hearing... well nothing much of worth.

Jam - the jam session at the end isn't bad as it allows us to see our heroes in full flight doing a weird medley of stuff, namely Hound Dog, Long Tall Sally and Blue Suede Shoes. Not my personal faves perhaps, but it's certainly a fun way of bringing the album to a close.

Overall fans of this era should probably buy this disc, it's a kinda cool recorded document to have in your collection. But as there are only a few great tracks on it, you won't find it life changing or anything like that. But turn your brain off and drift away to those halcyon days of the late 80's. And remember, this product was all done in a good cause, so that's gotta be worth something too.

This is a really unique CD. It's got all the great 80's Metal bands set loose to belt out their favorite tunes. A great way to see another side of these guys and to get a feel for what influenced them when they were young and aspiring Headbangers. Some of their picks surprised me. I HAD to buy this so I could have every recording by OZZY. (I even have his funky "Shake Your Head" with Was (not Was) and his duet with Miss Piggy on "Kermit Unpigged".) His choice of "Purple Haze" on this CD was interesting. He nailed it as only Ozzy could. By the way, the correct title is, "Stairway to Heaven/Highway to Hell". Every Headbanger should have it!

After reading some glowing reviews of this album and band, I was also intrigued by the artwork and packaging after checking it out online, and decided to give it a shot. Very disappointing release....

I don't really know how to express my displeasure in this review. They are seemingly competent musicians, they clearly have a grasp of what they wanted to do with this disc, and as previously stated, the art is interesting and well-done for an obscure indie release. It just comes across as extremely repetitive, lifeless, and plain old boring. I'm not sure what this is supposed to be....very uninspired and tedious instrumental prog-rock. Sorry guys, A for effort.
