Live at the House of Blues [Explicit Lyrics] [Live]
Editorial Reviews
Product Description
Any fan of true art knows that an artist is most alive when he is on stage. Tupac Live At The House of Blues is Tupac's final recorded performanceeternalized on July 4, 1996 at the House of Blues on the Sunset Stripand a celebration of his vital musical genius. One of the most respected aspects of Tupac's grand personality was his absolute sincerity, and Tupac Live... stays true to that legacy: it is a completely honest performance sans censors and retakes. The performance, the energy and the artistry speak for themselves and further present Tupac as one of the most brilliant entertainers in the history of popular music and a master craftsman of the stage. Tupac Live is a fitting coda to Tupac's legacy of brilliant performance before he moved on to immortality.

Just when it seems that the purr has left Etta James's estimable voice, about halfway through this live concert recorded in 2001 at L.A.'s House of Blues she begins her eternally romantic ballad "At Last," and the years tumble away. James's singing becomes flexible as a tenor saxophone, building to a lovely, serpentine diminuendo, which she caps with an arching phrase that dissipates in a misty exhalation of breath. It's such a beautiful, brilliantly executed performance that it's suddenly clear that for most of this show, the 64-year-old diva played dirty on purpose. So her signatures, "Tell Mama" and "I'd Rather Go Blind" (really, just about everything), are raw and earthy, moan-and-groan R&B milked for every smile and tear. Raunchy, too, since James deploys plenty of her bawdy stage patter and picks numbers like the striptease fantasy "You Can Leave Your Hat On" and the even more obvious "I Just Want to Make Love to You." Her impetuous nature leads her into unpredictable improvisations, like the weird bird calls she warbles during the intro to the ghetto-rocker "All the Way Down," with it's wah-wah guitar and "Theme from Shaft" vibe. And her Roots Band are perfect accompanists. James's sons Donto and Sametto are the rhythm section, and the five horns and two guitarists play with the loose precision of the classic Stax or Muscle Shoals studio crews. Since James has made few live albums, she might have included more of her own gems in this set. But James has the command to transform numbers like Kiki Dee's "Sugar on the Floor" into soulful diamonds. --Ted Drozdowski

4.5 Stars Very good Live Etta James.......2007-05-19
She does what she says on this CD- burn down the house. You would never know this is a woman in her sixties here. Her vocals are strong and they are front and center and she's got good backup here. Fans of Etta James will love this and it will earn her many new fans if they are exposed to this.
Burn, Etta, Burn.......2006-06-27
Since my youth I have had an ear for roots music, whether I was conscious of that fact or not. The original of that interest first centered on the blues, then early rock and roll and later, with the folk revival of the early 1960's, folk music. I have often wondered about the source of this interest. I am, and have always been a city boy, and an Eastern city boy at that. Nevertheless, over time I have come to appreciate many more forms of roots music than in my youth. The subject of the following review is an example.
In my youth I gave Etta James' music short shrift because, to be honest, I did not like the so-called 'bubble gum' music genre that I believed she represented. In retrospect I do not think I was wrong to reject her early offerings, having replayed her early work recently. What got me interested in Etta was hearing her do The Jealous Kind and I'd Rather Be Blind at the Newport Folk Festival years ago. These songs reflect a more bluesy, gospelly tradition that my tastes can appreciate. The selections here are exactly in that same vain, especially Tell Mama and Sugar on the Floor. These are tastefully done and reflect both her powerful voice and range of interests. You may not like all the selections but there are more than enough to keep you interested. Rock on.
Too many are missing out on GREATNESS.......2005-07-23
Etta James style has evolved greatly over the decades-----it is merely a matter of personal preference as to which period of her career is her best-----i love her recent work equally as much as her earliest work--she is an artist who continually grows, stretches,& shares her immense talents & life experience w/ her audience. In her most recent years her style has expanded towards jazz---(although she mixes many styles now)--& this recorded live performance is STUNNING!!!!!This performance leans heavily towards "jazzy blues"--I reccomend it highly,JUST BEAUTIFUL. It is as real as it gets---i love this cd,TY ETTA,from the bottom of my heart!
Tasty Set!.......2004-06-23
Some of the other reviews attack this on the basis that it is not as soulful as the 60's and 70's sets that we all know and love. Sure this is not 1962, but the band is on and it is a powerful well produced saucy set. The fact that she can put it out this strong after all of these years is a testament to her artistry. It is a nice blues rock sound and it never dissapointed anyone that has heard it with me. I understand the argument for purity but in this world everything evolves and this one gets a well deserved spot on my shelf next to the classics.
Average at best.......2003-10-27
She spends as much time talking the lyrics as she does actually singing on this live CD. If your looking for Etta at her best live then buy her CD "Rocks the House".

Totally love this album. I must confess it was very VERY pleasent surprise when I receive this item and had the DVD with the concert. There is only one thing: I live in Europe and don't think I will be able to see the DVD.... but I also haven't tried. If I'll be able, I hope to have such good result from it as from the CD.
But I must say: the CD is NOT live (as I thought it would be when I purchase it). Nevertheless..... is FABULASTIC!!

wonderful band that does not get enough recognition.......2006-11-25
Better Than Ezra is good on record and unbelievable as a live act.
I think they were unfairly tagged as an alternative group when they first came out with the hit single "Good". This is a band that cannot be categorized in any manner.
There are 3 things that make this band a great live act;
1) The songwriting is very earnest and personable;
2) The band plays with a lot of energy. It seems as though they are more excited to be playing then for you to be listening and
3) Singer Kevin's Griffin's interaction with the audience.
Because you cannot pigeonhole them into any type of music, their live show offers a wide, a mine a real wide variety of music. They rock out, they do a little rap, they do tender ballads, they do extended jams, they noodle on their instruments.
This cd is a decent representative of their live act but it is no substitute. They in betweeen song banter, as well as when they (out of nowhere) go into cover songs are integral parts of a live Better Than Ezra show.
"Good", "King of New Orleans", "Extraordinary", and "Desperately Wanting" are songs that really come alive on the live CD.
If you ever get a chance, do see this band live especially in a small venue. They are the most likeable band around
As another reviewed said, they are ridiculously underrated!
BTE--Most Under-Rated Band in America.......2006-04-05
This CD is an awesome, concert-like experience. If you can't see them in person, this is the next best thing.
BTE rocks!.......2005-03-08
Live At The House Of Blues New Orleans is a great set from a great band!
Never a disappointment!.......2005-02-21
I have been waiting for Ezra to release a live album, and I'm thrilled. I purchased the DVD and the CD and both are worth every penny. While no recording can entirely capture the "live show" experience this is a noble effort. I would recommend it to anyone Ezralites and newbies alike.
Great Band...but FLAT vocals, Boring DVD.......2004-12-28
BTE is a shining beacon of hope for music today. They are consumate musicians and music writers. I have seen them live many times, and it safe to say that this DVD DOES NOT CAPTURE this band at it's best at all!!! Perhaps the very presence of cameras added an unnatural element to the show. Kevin always tends to be flat vocally live, and this is highlighted in the DVD!! The songs are vocally challenging in the first place and it's obvious that studio production gives him a "hand". A live recording, unfortunately, does not lie !!! It would have been better to have used mics spread out over the hall instead of tapping into the mixing board!!! Thats usually how you save flat singers. Perhaps he could not hear himself or the tonality of the band very well. In any case, it was not a good night for Kevin. (Bill Withers would not have been impressed of the "Use Me" rendition) The other dissapointing aspect of this video was it's "blahness": music was no different than listening to their CD. There was little improv, no jamming, just BLAH. This band has one of the best drummers and bass players around!!!!! The DVD certainly didn't show this!!! You certainly will not capture new listeners with this DVD. Overall, I was dissapointed and aggrevated frankly. I have this strange sensation that the band isn't too happy with this production either

Bryan Lee and Pals in Top Form.......2007-08-06
A New Orleans native, I stopped in at the Old Absinthe Bar for a Sazerac while taking some out-of-town guests around the city. There was a blues band on the stage fronted by a heavy-set guy dressed all in white. His voice was pretty good, and we were into the music, but when Bryan Lee ripped into his first solo our jaws just dropped. Maybe we'd heard that kind of playing on a blues CD once or twice, but none of us ever imagined we could just walk into a bar off the street, buy our "one drink minimum," and hear someone wail like that. His companion musicians were superb as well. We sat, hardly talking to each other, until Mr. Lee left the stage for the last time.
You'll never hear exactly what we heard. The blues bar was gone long before Hurricane Katrina, another victim to the epidemic of mango-flavored daquiris. But this CD is about as close as you can expect from a live recording. Unlike the Friday Night recording, this one included two guest guitarists: Frank Marino (known for his work with Mahogany Rush) and Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Their performances are excellent, but more important I think is that their presence brought out the absolute best in Mr. Lee's playing. Forced to choose between the two CD's, I'd go with this one first.
Slice of the blues.......2007-05-14
If you only buy this as a protest against the loss of great old music haunts like the Old Absinthe House Bar in New Orleans, that's reason enough. The engaging, dynamic performance by the bar's longtime resident genius Bryan Lee is just a plus.
Very nice live blues album.......2005-08-28
This was my introduction to Bryan Lee and I was not dissapointed. This is really a fine example of how good blues can sound live. There are some really nice guests that appear on this also, by the way the same lineup was also on the Friday night disc, this should really have come out as a double live album. James Cotton is on this and although he does not wail the same as he once did it is still James Cotton.
There is also a gust appearence by Frank Marino and Kenny Wayne Shepard. I have heard through a he said she said thing that KW was very rude to Marino at these 2 shows, it does not surprise me, he is known to be very arrogant. A kid whose father was in the music buisness and had a whole lot of breaks because of that, and really thinks he is hot stuff. He is a good guitar player , but without a doubt the 3rd best on these 2 discs behind Lee and Marino.
One thing I noticed outright was that Marino's guitar work seems to be turned way down, almost like Lee was trying to let his boy KW sound better than Frank, which is the only way he ever could, KW could not carry Marino's guitar strap if we let the truth be known.
But like I said both this one and the one on Friday are both well worth a listen.
pretty good, but not 5-star good.......2003-11-08
When I found out (not from Amazon) that Frank Marino was on this album, plus KWS, I almost bought it sight unseen, but I gave the samples a listen and then decided to pick this and the Friday night (part I) up.
I wasn't dissapointed, but my expectations we perhaps a little high, so it's not one of my top blues guitar albums, live or otherwise. It's a decent blues album and I like it, and although I'm no stranger to raw live blues, some of Lee's rawness comes off as, I'm sorry, but it's my opinion, sloppiness. Taken in context of a live recording in a New Orleans bar, this fits, but it's not 5-star material. Nor, IMHO is the companion album.
But don't let that stop you from picking it up, it's/they're good album(s). Lee is a decent guitarist and singer, and it's really cool that he had Marino & Shepherd sit in with him. Makes you want to blast it loud while sipping a Jim Beam.
To be really fair I need to check out other albums by Lee.
If you're a very hard-core Marino fan like I am, you might a little dissapointed , Frank's a great player on his own and even better with Mahogany Rush, but like his "blues period" where he went from his own, post-Jimi/almost progressive self-styled fantastic sound period (IV, Strange Universe) to a more Johnny Winter vein, well, Frank's just not a blues guitarist *first*. He seems to be straining, not to play notes, but to garner feel. I can't believe I of all people am saying this about Frank!
Frank does do some nice slide playing, although I'm not sure it's actually slide, I had heard that on earlier MR albums he used his whammy bar for slide-sounds, but that be yet another Marino urban legend.
Some people are not so keen on KWS, but I have most of his albums and I like him a lot even if he's a SRV clone, at the end of the day he plays well and has good tunes. He sounds good here too.
Don't kill me for this review, someone else yeh or nay it.
Johnny Blue.......2003-04-26
Bryan Lee's Live at the Old Absinthe Bar Saturday Night CD is without a doubt one of the best hard core live blues CD's around. Too bad not too many people have heard of him. He has a great band behind him and his guests are not too shabby either (Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Frank Marino). The Friday night CD is quite good also. If you love the blues, this CD is rather entertaining and should be in your collection. It is addicting to listen to since it is so good.

Tabasco-style blues.......2003-11-07
At my high school reunion, a classmate named Kevin McMahon cornered me near the bar, handed me a CD, said that he liked my Roy Buchanan article-and insisted I needed to hear this guy. He was 100% right about that-Lee is the hot Daddy of Bad Blues and he commands respect. The story goes that Bryan plays in a bar in New Orleans and doesn't really leave the place-it's a home to him-and that special guests come to visit. We're talking special guests like James Cotton, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and Frank Marino (of Mahogany Rush).
Quick!-my asbestos gloves, because what Stevie Wonder can do with a keyboard, Bryan Lee does with a guitar, and that is scorching good music. Oh, yeah, he's blind, too. We're talking raw, skin-it-alive Fender Stratocaster, folks. Can he sing? Nasty, raspy, and when he screeches, I swear the last time that kind of sound crossed my ears was in metal shop. The backup band's support is hot enough to melt lead, and there's five-yes, five more CDs available. For an extra treat, try his Crawfish Lady-both the music and the recipe are found on that disc, but I warn you: there's no putting out this fire with any known substance, because Bryan Lee is too hot to control except under his own terms.

Album Description
The classic live album fully remastered!
Despite his magnificent studio recordings over the past five decades, Solomon is truly in his element on stage. And his unbelievable live show has never been captured better than on this 1994 album. Backed by an amazing 33-piece orchestra in New Orleans, he performs exquisite renditions of his many '60s soul hits, plus R&B/blues standards like "Ain't Nobody's Business" and "Good Rockin' Tonight." The album won Burke a W.C. Handy Blues Award for Soul Blues Album of the Year in 1995.

Buy it! Don't think twice; it's better than alright. Top notch performance making you wish you were there in New Orleans that night.
Vivid and visualized live in 1994.......2006-05-12
This live CD's inner-sleeve shows some photos of Solomon Burke and his big band which consists of more than ten. He sings with a mike and a tulip in his hands. Not so large a stage is stuffed by his rhythm and horn section and background girls. Crammed people in this house of blues are heated up and sweated up. And the sound in this CD "show" you such vivid scenes. I've never seen his performance before, but I can "see" it thanks to this visualizing sound.

Waste of Money !!!.......2006-06-22
This Cd is nothing but Quik buying time before his next studio release and trying to suck every dollar out of you possible. Most fans of Quik probably have most of his cd's already, making this disc worthless(even to newcomers). If you are looking for a good disc that covers Quik's career, buy The Best of:The Finale. Its a better and more complete collection of songs and its NOT LIVE!The only reason this disc recieved two stars was for the track selection.
really good.......2006-06-16
i enjoyed this album. it's a hit&miss situation when i think of DJ Quik: on one hand he is a very slept Musical Producer/artist who has for the most part of his career rode shotgun in Dr.Dre''s shadow. on other hand he never really expanded his musical plate&got lumped as a certain type of artist&whatnot. folks on the real know there is more to Quik, but he hasn't always expanded his talents. this is the best step forward he has made in quite a while.a live band really hits the spot. the drumming, horns&the Guitar of Robert "Fonksta" Bacon is on point. someof the rapping&parts are hit&miss&i feel that the set could have dropped 4-5 cuts, but this is a really good collection. i do wonder at this stage of Quik's career if he has anything new left? because when you drop a Greatest Hits live set after just releasing a new album without much fanfare you gotta wonder if a Audeince is still gonna give this Man his duethe big question does he still have that drive in him? this collection is the best thing he has released since the 90's started, but what does it mean in the bigger picture??
Musical Genius.......2006-06-14
This concert was recoded 02/03/2006 at the House of Blues in Los Angeles (look out for the DVD coming soon).
Quik is on the stage with a live band of 12 elements, really talented dudes, expecially Robert "Fonksta" Bacon that on "Medley For A V" shines, in a real way!
If you like real Hip Hop, P-Funk at its finest, real music with instruments, you gotta buy this record.
The sound is perfect, it's like being there.
PS: DJ Quik dedicates the song "Safe + Sound" to the memory of 2Pac, which used to listen to it when he was in jail.
A truly "musical" rapper - he's a legend.......2006-06-12
Quik is one of the most underrated rappers out today. His beats are always well arranged and can actually be played by a band. Quik is a real musician. This album contains all his classics, with the exception of "You'z A Ganxta" played live with a 12 piece band. His set at the House of Blues in LA was unforgettable and this album commemorates it! Don't stop what you're doing Quik - the fans love you and highly appreciate your work!
Classics Made By a Legend .......2006-06-10
Quik is one of the west coast musically talented and genius minds that helped put the west on the map . I'm a Quik fan since day one back in 1991 . This CD is like a ride down memory lane. with classic hits from the veteran himself. I strongly recommend it to all west coast and true DJ Quik Fans .
A true classic

A must have for the avid fan of Son House................2006-09-19
Eddie James "Son" House was born in 1902 and was one of the earliest blues musicians in the 1920's playing with Charlie Patton and even serving as an early mentor to Robert Johnson until Johnson left town and "sold his soul to the devil" for his amazing skills.
It is amazing that with such a paucity of recordings, this Baptist bluesman's status could forever be forged in the annals of American music as legendary. Son House record a mere 7 Paramount sides in 1930, some field recordings by Alan Lomax in 1941 & 1942, and some sessions in 1965 after his "rediscovery." He put the guitar down around 1942 because, as he stated in an interview in the 1960's, all of his friends were dying, from Charlie Patton to Robert Johnson......he simply thought he would be next if he kept on playing. And so he put his guitar down for 20 plus years.
Outside of the three times he officially recorded in the field or in studio sessions, there is not a lot of material for the avid fan of Son House. Luckily for us, we have recordings such as "Live at the Gaslight in 1965." He may not have the white-hot intensity of the 1930 Paramount sessions, but the intensity is there nonetheless. And we are witness to a soft spoken Son House as he talks very softly between songs.......for me, this is what I enjoy the most even though the music is fantastic. He doesn't say much, but his soft spoken words contrast starkly with his singing and presence. Listening to this album is like finding a treasure, a treasure to be savored and enjoyed partly because it is a testament to one of the all time great names in the genre of the blues. And partly because sadly, there is simply a dearth of recordings by Son House. When the audience applauds in gentle claps, you get the distinct impression that they do not know how great the figure in front of them will ultimately prove to be.
Enjoy the songs on this album.....they were made by a master who to this very day is the epitome of delta blues.
4 1/2 stars.
Listen and Learn.......2004-03-03
Even if he hadn't influenced anyone, even if historically he was a 19 year old kid from Shirley, Long Island, even if this recording at just been waxed last night, this is good, essential blues listening, you won't want to stop listening, you wont stop seeing the scenes of the blues that the songs make, you won't stop swaying at the power and swing of his guitar playing and singing. On here, my song is Preachin the Blues. I know you will have yours.
Son House taught Robert Johnson the slide blues. Son House taught Muddy Waters. When Son House started performing at Blues festivals again in the mid 1960s, some of Muddy's younger band members would start to go off for a smoke or whatever when the old man came on stage. Muddy wouldn't let them. Muddy Waters would tell all his band members to be quiet and pay attention when the man played because even compared with Muddy, this was the real deal.
Rediscovered in Rochester, New York, relearning to play the guitar, (how this country abuses the masters that come from its people, particularly its Black people), put back on the stage by the folk revival's blues section, House made recordings that reproduced his old masterpies, with a wrier sense of meaning than before.
People outside of the blues life focus on the guitar playing or the rhythm of the singing, but where the power comes from is the feeling and the words that are put together, the life and the meaning of the blues. Son House in his youth and his old age, on this and his other sides, always gave it.
So Like Muddy Waters, I would like you to know that
Son House is the real deal.

CD good, DVD even better!!!.......2005-11-03
A definite must have for fans of Pat Travers/Carmine Appice or any classic rock blues fan.
This is real good stuff and I don't find the song fade outs & ins take anything from the enjoyment. The disc clocks in at just over 78:30, so come on. More talk might have meant one last song. I'll take the music over between song banter anyday.
Having just seen the DVD after a few days with just the CD, I must admit that the DVD is an improvement with the addition of the visual aspect of a concert.
With the CD having a bonus track "Keep On Rocking" over the DVD, I ended up buying both. :)
If I had to recommend one over the other I'd get the DVD. Something about seeing Pat, Carmine, and TM Stevens rip it up just adds to the greatness of this release.
Not Bad..........2005-09-11
It features mostly material from the Balls album. The chemistry seems good between him & Carmine. Travers' guitar playing is pretty tight at times & soulfully sloppy (by design I'm sure) at others. A lot of people might not agree with Sexy being on there, but it's a good curve ball to have from the Appice/Stewart days in the 70's. The fade outs in between songs kind of slow down the tempo & kill the rhythm, but not a bad piece of listening overall.
pat doing his thang--really a 2.5 stars.......2005-07-25
I am a long time fan of PT, its always nice to hear new live material and this does just right. his guitar work seems more inspired than previous outings. the cd: live music should be heard without fadeouts(for a more continuous rocking experience and to hear errors, chatting w/audience etc). this cd does fade out and it lessens the total impact. song material: new and fresh, with new recent lineup--HOWEVER: the song DO YOU THINK I AM SEXY, should have been omitted!. I can't say this is great but its a nice clip of where pat is today. pat fans?: GET IT! curious?: try other material and then proceed. ---this is alittle different and does show pat in today music enviroment.

A Blast From The Past.......2000-06-27
Dont let anyone tell you that omar&the howlers are Creedence clones From the the moment the blast of omars voice comes growling out of your speakers complete with feedback you have a rare talent out of the same town as Bo Diddley and lately out of the home of rocking blues Austin Texas Crank up the barbecue ,grab a beer and invite a few friends round and set the neighbourhood alight rocking with a slab of pure swamp blues If your foot fails to tap to the beat, ring your local doctor as you must be dead. So in brief ,if swirling organs and chugging guitars combined with a voice out of the deepest part of the gravel pit are your prescription for a tonic for the drabness of life so take this with the greatest urgency
blast from the past.......2000-06-20
You could call me a completist as I have everything ever released by omar and the howlers From the first bars the swamp oozes out of the stereo speakers complete with feedback . many have compared omar with creedence but get real,he has continued and grown, they were at the end heading in a heavier track They must feed singers a diet of pure gravel with a dose of passion ,I am not a 50's style rock fan but this blast from 1987 has its roots in little richard and buddy holly. It is still timeless music that the toes tap to
