For anyone interested in Ms. Ellison's work who doesn't want to spend so much on this out-of-print Best of, Rhino Handmade has just annoucned a three-disc collection that includes all 23 songs from this album, plus much more. As always with Rhino Handmade it's a limited edition, so go straight to their website if you're want to spend much less money for way more music.

I investigated her due to a Maurice Gibb interview where Maurice seemed to be obessively enamoured with the Stay With Me single. I must say she leaves the Bee Gees on planet Earth here and must know the moon as her backyard. Many soul singers leave me with the feeling that I get watching a particular Wednesday afternoon soap opera. The sound of Lorraine Ellison's voice leaves me catatonic and feeling like I have no right to say I have the blues. She grips you firmly by the back of the neck with her overwhelming display of raw human emotion. I cannot afford this cd, and have never heard its entirety. I noticed on Amazon UK, they are rereleasing it on March 6th, 2006. Can I order that if I live in South Dakota I wonder?

Singers come and go. That is what Lorraine Ellison did. She Only appeared on 3 albums of her own and the soundtrack for the movie The Landlord. This record contains a large block of her recordings for Warner Brothers during the 70's. Most of the performances here are first rate; even the throwaway songs. For those of us who are fortunate enough to have this CD, we are truly blessed. Too bad they left off of this CD her performances with the Oliver Nelson arrangements. 'When Love Flies Away'(which would make you cry) and "What Is A Woman". Nevertheless, Lorraine was a true treasure. This is real R&B soul sung the way it is supposed to be sung. Lorraine was a "belter" who could deliver a song in a most profound and powerful, yet sweet manner. Aretha and Patti LaBelle had success, Lorraine had cancer and she checked out too soon. Thank heaven that Lorraine made these reciedings. Buy this record. (if you can find it)It will truly rock your soul.

I agree with the prior reviewer: When I heard the title track of this best of compilation, I nearly lost it. I still get goosebumps thinking about those goosebumps. I had never heard of Lorraine Ellison before stumbling upon this CD in the used bin of a Soul and R&B music store. How could this wonderful singer have had such a short and relatively unnoticed career by popular music standards? Listen to this disc. Her cover of some late 60s and early 70s pop standards (the Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, and Jimmy Cliff) are magnificent. Her vocals are more over-wrought than Aretha's but the power is the same -- and the emotions still manage to ring true.

Quite simply, the title track will make your hair stand on end. Think of Aretha Franklin crossed with the "River Deep, Mountain High"-era Tina Turner, and then multiply your conception by 10. You still won't have come close to imagining Ellison's power and expressiveness. On technical terms, her performance is breathtaking. As emotional expression, it is nothing less than ravishing; it sounds as though her heart is being torn out of her while she sings. Frankly, the rest of her recorded work is pretty lukewarm, but for "Stay With Me" alone, you absolutely have to hear this.
