Album Description
Sean Kingston, a 17 year old native of Jamaica is not just a new face in popular music, he's accomplished the rare task of creating a new genre where rap, reggae, dancehall, pop, a touch of doo-wop and remarkable songwriting all combined into something totally fresh. Add in Sean's family roots which cite reggae king Buju Banton as his uncle and Jamaican legendary producer Jack Ruby as his grandfather and you have one of the most exciting debuts this year.

Get it now!.......2007-08-06
Finally a CD worth every penny! More than half of the tracks on this album are ready to released as singles...this album is great to have at your summer party!!
Rip off.......2007-08-06
You know, when I first heard the "Beautiful Girls" song, I thought it was catchy... cool song. Then I saw Kingston on the Today show and I thought "cool, maybe this kid will be then next Prince Buster." Kid had a band, a double bass, and all the players were to the nines...
Man, was I wrong. I've listened to most of this album. I know a lot of people have pointed out that "Beautiful Girls" is a rip from "Stand by Me", and they're right... but the song's good enough that I can overlook that. The rest of the album though... Rip off...
REFRESHING!.......2007-08-02
What can I say about this record? Let's face it R&B/Hip-hop has been really stale this year. I'm impressed to see such a young artist using innovative sounds/lyrics. Why are so many R&B/Hip-hop artist afraid to draw from other influences in different genres of music? I listen to all genres of music so I can appreciate this record.
I think people who have rated this album poorly have "limited" taste in music...meaning they don't mind hearing the same beats/lyrics over and over from artist to artist. Or they propably haven't really listened to this record.
If you enjoy Sean Paul, Michael Jackson, Kanye West buy this record. Yes, it's that good.
Suicidal, Suicidal, Suici...........2007-08-02
Sean Kingston seemed to come out of nowhere with "Beautiful Girls" this summer. The song gained well through the charts landing him a very good, summer, breezy-reggae hit, with one very unexpected ending. And now he delievers with his new self-titled debut. With Kingston's debut, you get the obvious flowchart of an R&B newcomer. A few party songs ("Kingston", "Got No Shorty", "Drummer Boy"), a few heartfelt ballads ("Me Love", "Dry Your Eyes") and the obligatory "song of the summer" "Beautiful Girls", most notable for Kingston killing himself by the end of the song. Tied in for good measure is the song featuring whatever young R&B girl that's hot at that current, and then you find "There's Nothing" with Paula DeAnda. And to match his hot, hit single that samples Ben E. King's "Stand By Me", he and Rotem then sample Phil Collins's "In The Air Tonight" on "I Can Feel It" with mixed results. Anything new or exciting going on here? No, but there's nothing bad going on here either. Originality isn't quite Kingston's gem, although bringing breezy, summery, Jamacain styled music, that would indeed be Kingston's gem quality. His voice isn't the rangiest, but his perplexed, unpredictable flow is what makes it the most interesting. Add in producer Jonathan Rotem and the aforementioned list of love songs, party songs, and some hood tracks, and you get one set of enjoyable reggae/hip-hop jams that define the summer. Some may question the aggression of the disc (he's barely 17), and Kingston might not be too out of the box. But he's not the dull pencil in the box either. 3.5 stars.
simple garbage...........2007-08-01
Beautiful Girls" is really a misleading song. It seems to imply that maybe Sean Kingston was going to have producers that might do something interesting; combine R&B, in the vein of Sean Paul, with bubblegum doo wop. The song is, in a word, the perfect guilty pleasure. Thing is, everything else on Sean Kingston's debut album is pretty much...uh...***.
You don't expect much out of an R&B album these days when the artist in question had an army of merchandise available a month before his album had even leaked, so I really wasn't expecting that much. But the single that led to all of this madness ("Beautiful Girls") was probably my favorite single of the summer. Thus, my expectations for some massively awesome fusion between Sean Paul, 50's pop bands and a fat Nelly were shattered with one listen to Sean Kingston.
Notice the two quick references to Sean Paul? Yeah thats because Sean pretty much sounds like a white kid who wanted to sound Jamaican like his idle, Sean (convoluted!). Kingston has tried to embrace his Jamaican roots supposedly, so despite the fact he was raised in the US he attempts to sing with all the vigor of a Jamaican kid fresh off the street. The result is pretty much what it sounds likes- an American trying to sound like an islander with eh results. It doesn't help they really take the time to touch up the sound of his voice in studio- while it makes for a pleasant sound on "Beautiful Girls" the rest of the album gets annoying and sterile sounding quick.
Canned beats. Thats pretty much what Sean Kingston has going for him on the entire album. While the Phil Collins sampling "There's Nothing" is a pretty interesting song, everything else pretty much could belong to any other wannabe rapper. There's the club bangers, the radio-ready hits, the ballads, and the "remix", but inexplicably missing is a real reason to buy the album! When everything sounds like a homogenized version something Sean Paul or Busta Rhymes (yes Busta) did years ago, and the most interesting part of the album is the fact Kingston samples a dreadfully boring Phil Collins song, its pretty self explanatory where this leads.
Maybe this could be salvaged if Kingston had kept the kind of innocent charm "Beautiful Girls" exudes throughout most of the album, but instead its generally more faux-gangsta frontin' made by the same tired producers (or rather producer- JR Totem produced the entirety of the album) that make the same tired album filler over and over and over. "Me Love" is a decent song and is already getting geared up to be the next single, but even thats too annoying to give Kingston another successful single. Get ready for Sean Kingston to be the big one-hit-wonder of 2007. Sean Kingston is entirely devoid of anything that makes a pop album worth listening to; even the catchy stuff is so wrapped up in the absolute fakeness that its hard to take seriously. Perhaps a better term would be "to take lightly."
The bottom line is just get "Beautiful Girls." Its the jam of the summer, and is a certifiable hit that'll likely be at the top of the list for the 2007 section of Remembering the 00's. Just forget about the album and you'll never have to be bothered with more of the same tiresome trash.

This is one of those soundtracks that may have worked better during the vinyl era. Most of the tunes here (each and every one a '50s rock classic) are likely already in the CD collections of fans of this kind of music. That's probably the case with Buddy Holly, Ben E. King, the Del Vikings (two cuts here), the Coasters, Jerry Lee Lewis, and perhaps Shirley & Lee. It's probably not true of the Chordettes' "Lollipop," but that tune is used to such great effect in this terrific flick that you may just want to watch the video again. You can't go wrong with 10 feel-good classics. --Bill Holdship

Great Songs.......2006-09-28
I listened to this soundtrack in a friend's car a couple times on a trip. The music was great! I can't wait until I buy myself the CD.
Let The Good Times Roll!.......2006-06-22
This soundtrack is easily one of the most timeless you will ever hear. From the Chordettes and "Lollipop" to Shirley and Lee "Let The Good Times Roll". This music takes you back to those warm summer nights, whether you are 12 or 62. Stand By Me is a true coming of age story, and these songs will remind you of that magical time in your life. Don't pass this one up!
Great starter set for a future rock n' roller.......2005-09-28
I loved that movie Stand By Me when I was a kid, as I was the same age as the boys in this movie and felt like I too was going on sort of a "spiritual journey" with them in the course of the movie. Years later seeing it, well, it's not the same. I've lost my innocence since then and it doesn't have the same magic it used to. The soundtrack, however, will always live in my heart.
I had never heard of any of the artists, let alone the songs, which this wonderful soundtrack included. I began to explore a world out there that I didn't know existed, the world of the past and who all these great rock n' rollers were. This soundtrack, as well as The Lost Boys soundtrack, helped mold and shape me into who I am today. For this I will always be greatful.
If you love the jukebox...........2003-11-17
A dandy of a soundtrack filled with a set of 10 songs from the era of Cadillac's and corner malt shops. It surprised a lot of people who saw the movie and bought the soundtrack that Elvis, with his fun bop or sweet croonin' would be exempt from this beauty. The stars here more than make up for his absence. The maverick of early rock, Buddy Holly, makes an appearence with his sweet "Everyday". The Del Vikings get the snappy "Come Go With Me" goin', and then smile all around with "Whispering Bells". My cousin, brother and I can't get enough of The Chordettes and "Lollipop". You gotta admit that the disc does come to an end pretty quick, and 50's tunes are usually two minutes (plus) long. At least the plate is loaded with a small but yummy helping, including the classic "Stand By Me" and The Coasters' "Yakety Yak". Though it's time limit is nowhere near the best innocence era soundtrack of them all, "American Grafitti", it would be just as good if it somehow had the same running time.
As good as the movie.......2003-06-01
Since I say the stand by me soundtrack is as good as the movie you realize there's just a word that can define it: perfect. The songs aren't just good, they're so amazing that they're visible. The images from the movie go into your head as you listen to the music and bring back all the emotions you felt while watching it. The 50's tracks are very well chosen and fit the perfection of a timeless movie.

Best Ben E King compilation by far!.......2007-06-17
Here we have all the hits + the 3 big Drifters' hits when Ben was their
leadsinger. After the first Drifters success Ben received a ridiculous
500 $ "salary" and he decided he'd better be off by himself. Before
leaving in 1960 he recorded 3 more songs as leader of the Drifters
that became huge hits (Save the Last Dance, I Count the Tears and This
Magic Moment)Then as a solo singer he recorded Stand By Me in 1961 and
the rest is history. This song is considered as one of the greatest
in music history. The reason why I consider this the best compilation
ever is because of the sound quality. All songs are in full stereo and
I just don't understand why other Drifters and Ben E King compilations
are rather bad mono recordings. Hearing all these wonderful hits in
full stereo make the other compilations worthless.
Highly recommendable!
Good Stuff.......2007-05-13
Early Rock And Roll with a mix of Blues good stuff for the ears
Ex-Drifters lead singer made great solo music.......2005-03-30
Born Benjamin Earl Nelson but known as Ben E King by the time he achieved fame as lead singer of the Drifters, Ben did not have many big solo hits but he nevertheless made an important contribution to popular music.
This compilation includes three of his American hits as lead singer of the Drifters. All three are brilliant but the most famous is Save the last dance for me, which has been recorded by a multitude of singers in several different styles of music. It has also been translated into several languages and many great covers have been recorded in France, Germany and elsewhere.
Following the success of Save the last dance for me, Ben opted for a solo career. He had fewer hits as a solo artist than his former group had without him, but Stand by me (later to become the theme song of an eighties movie) ensures his place in pop music history as a solo singer, while his other great solo records include Spanish Harlem, Amor, Don't play that song and I who have nothing. Ben made a brief comeback in the American charts with Supernatural thing in the mid-seventies.
Ben's first (minor) UK hit, First taste of love, is also included, together with his covers of such classics as Dream lover, Moon river, It's all in the game, On the street where you live and Will you love me tomorrow.
This is a fine compilation that contains all the important solo tracks from Ben's career, plus three Drifters tracks.
Good but Routine.......2004-10-02
There are clearly some memorable songs on this CD but there are at least 6 tunes that are "covers" and were done originally by other artists whom you think of when you hear them. Try the CD, "Very Best of Ben E. King". Those songs belong only to him.
What a sound!!.......2000-09-19
I have long been a Drifters fan and admired Ben E. King when he was their lead singer; but I never really appreciated his talents until I heard this album. Ben E. King is truly a soulful singer, and many of the songs on this album will have you wondering why he hasn't been more appreciated. If you like Jerry Butler, the Drifters, Jackie Wilson or Clyde McPhatter, then you will have to like this album. Wish I had found it years ago!!

Mill. Classical review.......2007-05-13
This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.
classical music for the unitiated.......2007-04-01
This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.
Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30
Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.
I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.
It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!
Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]
A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24
I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.
Excellent!.......2007-03-08
A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

The Better of the two.......2006-06-03
I have both disc in the series. I liked the music on this disc much more than the first. The selections seem more focused and the sounds are much clearer. Also, the particular pieces fit better together. I love the sound of this group and hope they make more in the future.
Not as good as version 1 in this series.......2004-09-03
This is by the same group who did the wonderful & engaging Early American Choral Music 1. Somehow this CD did not live up to its predecessor in some ways. The performance is still top notch, but somehow the CD as a whole isn't quite as engaging to listen to as the first. Perhaps version 2's strength is also its weakness. Its diversity of composers allows you to pear past the shadow of William Billings and sample other notable early American hymn writers. That exposure is valuable & appreciated. I just couldn't get into it as much.
A final note: many of the texts are beautiful (and available from the publisher's web site). However, I would criticize "Who is this that cometh from Edom?" as dwelling just a bit too much on the Jews' rejection of Jesus. Among other reasons & issues, Christianity says that we are all sinners & there is no cause to single a particular group out negatively.
Same as 'Goostly Psalmes: Anglo-American Psalmody 1550-1800'.......2004-02-21
Please note this CD is a duplicate of His Majestie's Clerkes's "Goostly Psalmes: Anglo-American Psalmody 1550-1800" -- identical contents but a different name and cover. I ordered both and was irritated to discover this. This CD is cheaper, so I recommend this one. It is a lovely choral work from a little-known period of sacred music.

Customer Reviews:
The picture.......2006-12-11
I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

A rather presumptive holiday title, Simply the Best Christmas Album is an unqualified best--if you like classical, choral, and symphonic music. Marquee talent such as Placido Domingo, Natalie Cole, and Jose Carreras anchor the mix, abetted by the redoubtable London Brass, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Edward Higgenbottom & The Choir of New College, Oxford, and the Bolshoi Symphony Orchestra. This two-disc, 36-piece set presents a broad spectrum of holiday pageantry that embraces familiar traditional works like The Nutcracker and more contemporary pieces from Sumi Jo and Linda Eder. From triumphant brass and angelic choirs to stirring string pieces and rich, lovely orchestral movements, Simply the Best sets an exquisitely festive mood. --Martin Keller
Customer Reviews:
Joyous surprises!.......2006-06-01
Every once in awhile I run across an album that excells, not because of the shining brilliance of one artist, but because of the collective impact of several. Here, in this album, are some little-known gems from Christmas music literature. I was captivated by the lilting and primitive joy in "Jesus, the Light of the World," which I had never heard before. Then there is Chanticleer and its rendition of Charles Ives' "Christmas Carol," a classic too little known. There are others. If you look for unique renditions of familiar and unfamiliar Christmas music to enhance the joy of the season, this album is a must-buy.
Simply the Best..........2002-11-19
The minute I heard Thomas Hampson sing the first few notes of Adeste Fideles, I knew I had to have this album. It is a marvelous compilation of Classical Christmas favorites (excerpts from the Bach, Vivaldi and Corelli Christmas Concertos and The Nutcracker) and standard Christmas favorites, as well as some of the lesser heard Christmas gems.
The vocal power on this 2 CD set is amazing as well--Broadway star Linda Eder, Thomas Hampson, Kiri Te Kanawa, Jose Carreras, Chanticleer, and numerous others. I usually purchase one Christmas CD a year. This was it for me this year--make it part of your holiday collection.

Had to Have It!.......1999-06-07
I, too, heard this on United Airlines, and had to have it! What a great re-mix of a classic!
Dance Instructor's Review From Honolulu.......1999-05-25
I also heard this Ben E. King classic re-make on a United Airlines flight. It's hard to find in brick-and-mortar stores though. One music store I checked in Wash DC couldn't find it in their computer & never heard of the group. It'll be a great song to dance West Coast Swing to--once I can get a copy!
annoying, but catchy.......1999-05-11
this version of Stand by me is one of those songs that is so annoying that it is practically addiciting. i would recommend it to anyone who wants to bother someone.
Great remake of a classic.......1999-05-10
Ben E King would be proud of this remake of a sixties classic. I think being from Littleton CO and all that this town has been through made the words even more important. I heard it on a United Flight and had to have it
This song is fabulous!.......1998-11-14
This is the catchiest song in the world! Its a remake of the original "Stand By Me" but its a dance song and its soooo upbeat! I first heard it on German radio stations this summer on vacation in Europe, and I had to get it! I know that 4 The Cause is a group with a future, and this is not the last we have heard from them!

Customer Reviews:
stand by me.......2006-01-03
Chicago blues/soul man Cicero Blake has been releasing great CD's since the late 80's and `Stand By Me' ranks as one of the best. While the backing is a little stiff, the songs are better than average, courtesy of skilled songwriters Bob Jones, Frank Johnson, and the late Ronnie Lovejoy. Blake is a fine singer, showing his smooth side on tracks like "Stand By Me", "This Time Around" and "Great Pretender" while getting funky on "I Got to Find Me a Black Cat Bone". One complaint is that the last two tracks are carried over from his previous Ace disc `Wives Night Out' leaving only eight new ones.
