White girl fusing breezy cool jazz with sultry dollops of R&B lite while never straying far from the centerline may not be the most promising blueprint for an album. But damned if Janita doesn't pull it off with surprising grace here, often reminding us that it's the singer, not the formula, in the bargain. But then her perspective may be the key: Janita was an unlikely contemporary soul pioneer as a teen in her native Finland, bringing a steadfast commitment to classy style with her as she transformed herself into NYC-based journeywoman chanteuse. The album may begin by slyly evoking the spirit of Gilberto on the opener "No Words," but by the time it wends its way through the string-drenched elegance of "That's How Life Goes" and the spare, jazzy "I Only Want You," comparisons to Dianna Krall and Norah Jones seem not so far afield. There may be one too many bowings to slick MOR along the way, but the pop charms of "Too Late" and the title track are undeniable. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

Once in a very long while, you find a vocalist with a completely unique style. Janita has that very rare gift, combined with a powerful and appealing singing voice, strong writing talent and an unprocessed natural beauty and sensuality.

5 out of 5 stars Quickly becoming one of my favorite CDs.......2007-08-06

Simply Awesome, Her style is laced with soul and sort of wraps around you. It's the type of music you have to do something while you are listening. It ain't your Great-Grand Daddy's slow-mo jazz. This woman has soul and her music has a lot of heart in it. I have not found a track i don't like. . .

5 out of 5 stars A soul soother.......2007-06-13

I bought this c.d for "Enjoy the Silence" & fell in love with so many other
tracks, but "Seasons of Life" I've made my anthem - I adore it, especially
as my husband passed away suddenly 10 weeks ago - it comforts me tremendously. It was such an unexpected discovery....I love it immensely.

Jan

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2007-05-12

Janita's Seasons of Life & I'll Be Fine CD's are the best I've heard in a very long, long, time. Her style is very unique, it's hard to categorize her music, you just have to listen and then you'll understand. But once you do, there's no return. I've purchased about 5 cd's so far, because EVERY TIME a friend hears it they want their own copy. And they can't have mine!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-04-12

I love this CD. Buy it right now. You will listen to it constantly. Janita is awesome.

5 out of 5 stars WHAT A GIFT!!!!.......2007-03-27

Janita is among my favorite artists to listen to. I look at her just as i do Sade or Norah Jones. I hate to see such talent overlooked by local broadcasts; its just a shame they don't play her music.
In fact i didnt hear Janita until i decided to turn on a internet radio station in 2006.
HOUSTON NEEDS TO EMBRACE JANITA'S MUSIC. I think people would LOVE to hear her.
For now i will just enjoy the fact that i have a rare jewel that few have discovered.

5 out of 5 stars Ahh, Florence!!.......2002-10-14

Italian culture during the period from the 14th to the 16th centuries was a whirlwind of developing literature and art, and during this period of history Florence was a political and cultural center to rival Milan or Verona.
I love medieval and renaissance music. They are the "roots" of the great classics centuries later. One does not cultivate a complete education of art by studying only such Masters as Van Gogh, Renoir, Picasso, Dali etc. So it is with fine music.
These CD's contain examples of Florentine musical composition from the 1300's and 1500's. The first CD, performed by David Munrow and the Early Music Consort, covers compositions from the 1300's, with many of the works of Francesco Landini, the most prolific Florentine composer of this period. The second covers music from the 1500's and is performed by John Beckett and the Musica Reservata. Here we can see the early development of both symphonic structure and opera.
Both discs are wonderful examples of different periods in the history of musical development, and performed by different conductors and artists. Therefore a comparison between the two is unfair and misplaced. David Munrow and the Early Music Consort are superb, as I have always found them to be, and John Beckett and the Musica Reservata are equally enjoyable.
If you appreciate early music you will find this recording to be a fantastic addition to your collection, and perhaps the definitive collection of early Italian music. If you are unfamiliar with early music or with Italian Renaissance music then these CD's would be a wonderful introduction.

5 out of 5 stars Best Italian Renaissance disc available........2002-06-28

This re-issue of recordings from the early 70's by the Early Music Consort Of London is,in my opinion, the best recordings of Italian Renaissance works. It is the favorite of my eary music discs, and includes music treasures from 14th and 16th century Florence. Great listening on both discs, and worth the money!

4 out of 5 stars Munrow is magnificent.......2001-11-20

The first disc in this collection is delightful. David Munrow's recorder is a genuine treat. The vocal parts blend well and create a festive atmosphere. The Early Music Consort of London offer a splendid performance. By contrast, the second disc, which features Musica Reservata, is a bit disappointing. Two of the solo voices on disc two are harsh, detracting from an otherwise pleasant recording. They may fairly represent the performing style of sixteenth century Florence, but that is small consolation for the twentieth century ear. Nonetheless, the virtues of the first disc are sufficient to warrant purchasing this collection. Munrow is magnificent.

5 out of 5 stars boccacio would be proud.......2000-04-23

this is a superb recording of early music it is well performed and played. the first cd is all music from the 1300,s and the second is from the 1500,s if you like the kind of music this is the cd to get well worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Haunting, Moving Christmas Music.......2005-12-01

I took a gamble and bought this CD on a clearance table. I liked the cover art. But it was one of the best purchases I've ever made (you CAN tell a CD by it's cover, I suppose!) It is exactly the kind of music I want to listen to at Christmas. This is accoustic music but it's not fluffy at all. It retains some of the grittiness and moodiness of other times and places. And some of the lyrics are quite stirring. Kemper Crabb is invited to every Christmas at my house.

5 out of 5 stars Kemper strike again.......2005-11-08

This CD is my favorite Christmas album. It is gorgeous. If you happen to live in or around the Houston area, then be sure to attend one of his Medieval Christmas concerts.

Also be on the lookout for his new website, launching sometime in November 2005:

I saw them live and heard the CD. It sounds as good as it does in person. If you like Renisance music and want some variety in Christmas music, this is a perfect addition to your Christmas collection. Beautiful music stating what Christmas is all about.

    5 out of 5 stars Breathless ~.......2004-12-31

She sings as beautiful as she looks ! Due out on January 15 2005 is her new cd titled "Seasons Of Life".

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC - pure and simple!.......2004-12-15

I'm about to download her new one but this one STILL remains in the car. There are a few CD's that do this to you. For me, George Michael's new one 'Patience' is like that, along with this one.

Janita has a great sound and it's very smooth but not 'jazz smooth' ya know? The tracks are all very good and maintain a great feel throughout. It seriously is a CD that you can throw in and listen to all day. BTW - there are about 5 tracks on here that are GREAT tracks! I mean, they hold up against others in the same genre easily.

This CD is literally one of my favorites as evidenced by the fact that it's STILL in my car and it's been a year. Very impressive - you'll love this disc.

    5 out of 5 stars I can't get enough of this cd.......2003-03-07

... this cd is truly off the hook , why? Janita's voice, the musicians and the mixture of soul, and brazilian jazz is completely intoxicating. She is Finland's best kept secret. She reminds me of Lisa Stanfield. Who I also adore.

I love the entire cd, but I find myself hitting that repeat button with the first 4 selections especially. I listen to it day and night. Now I believe it is going to be a bit difficult to find another artist at this caliber. Cant wait til the next cd is cut.

5 out of 5 stars SMOOTH WITH GROOVE.......2002-10-11

IM TRUELY SPEECHLESS THIS WAS VERY SURPISING FIND BUT THIS IS ONE OF THE SMOOTHES CD'S I'VE HEARD IN A LONG TIME. IT HAS AND URBAN KINDA BOSSA SOUND TO IT. AND U CAN MOSDEFINITELY GROOVE TO THE WHOLE ALBUM I HAD SEARCH A BUNCH OF STORES LOOKING FOR THIS CD WHICH I COULDN'T FIND ANYWHERE. THE CHIC IS DEFINETELY DOING HER OWN THANG AND NOT FOLLOW WHATEVER EVERYONE ELSE IS DOING. ITS A SHAME SHE DOESN'T THE RADIO PLAY BUT ITS ALL GOOD. THE TITLE TRACK AS WELL AND FIREFLY, HEAVEN, GIVE ME A SIGN, BUT BASICALLY THE WHOLE ALBUM. AND THE FACT THE CHIC IS FROM FINLAND SO I DEFINETELY IMPRESSED. CHECK IT OUT U WILL DIG IT.

In this first period-instrument recording of Dido, Andrew Parrott tries to re-create the first known performance of the work--at Josiah Priest's School for Young Gentlewomen in London. Here (as there) the cast includes only one male--David Thomas, whose brawny Aeneas could overwhelm Dido physically as well as emotionally. Judith Nelson is a warm, sweet-toned Belinda; the Sorceress gets a vivid, raucous, love-it-or-hate-it performance by the legendary medieval-cum-folk-singer Jantina Noorman. Emma Kirkby, early in her career, sounds eloquent but extremely youthful as Dido--barely past her teens. This makes for a different, perhaps more credible, tragedy: a new, slightly immature queen, servant rather than mistress of her emotions, angrily refuses to take back the lover who abandoned her--only to die heartbroken after banishing him. --Matthew Westphal

    Customer Reviews:

    1 out of 5 stars Parrott parrotts.......2003-01-31

I am a big of early music. In particular, I enjoy early music done on original intsruments. Unfortunately, I was quite disappointed listening to this recording of great music. I enjoyed the singing on this recording, but the orchestral excusions were poorly done. Thanks to Parrott's skewed version, music is was lifeless, boring and poorly done. Despite what the critics say about Parrott, I have found all of his recordings utterly boring, and unamuzing. There are not even academic. This piece is not recommended. I encourage Kirby and other singers to pair up with better conductors.

4 out of 5 stars An hour of unalloyed pleasure.......2000-02-11

I studied "Dido and Aeneas" about two years ago having performed in it at school, and at this precise moment I am four weeks away from another production with the York University Chamber Choir. In the words of our conductor Peter Seymour, this piece is indeed an hour of unalloyed pleasure, and this is one of the best out of at least five recordings I am familiar with.

Emma Kirkby's wonderfully pure voice is just the thing to create the true Dido effect: most other soprani interpret it well but bring an inappropriately operatic vibrato to a quintessentially Baroque sound world. In some ways this is also a disadvantage, as her Dido also sounds rather more young and innocent than we might imagine, but then again, what else is opera about but a catalyst for the imagination? One other performer needs complimenting, namely Jantina Noorman, who sincerely had me shivering from her first note as the Sorceress. The casting is not entirely brilliant - why did they have a soprano as the Sailor? - but the Taverner Choir adds a sparkling vocal background whilst the linked orchestra is also very good and very well directed. The only further problem I would add (and a minor problem at that) is the division of the tracks - there are only four tracks, whereas the technology available to later producers has enabled them to split the opera up more conveniently for students and listeners who buy this for particular favourite moments.

This release is now 19 years old - but Chandos still have every reason to be proud of it.

4 out of 5 stars After one listen..........2000-01-05

I was introduced to Dido's lament at the end of the opera by my intro to music lit class; Emma Kirkby's on this album makes it worth buying.

        Album Description

An acoustic Christmas collection of old and new tunes; holiday parodies of non-Christmas songs along with old time country favorites. Guitar, fiddle, mandolin, autoharp, mountain dulcimer, steel guitar and dobro accompany solo and harmony vocals. This is a fun album that celebrates the season with a great balance of light-hearted parody and lovely old country traditionals, with just a touch of delta blues for good measure!

          Album Description

An acoustic album of country, blues, folk and original tunes performed on guitar, banjo, fiddle, autoharp, and mountain dulcimer (with just a bit of accordion accompaniment here and there!), this recording features virtuoso instrumental performances and vocal renditions from nationally acclaimed musicians. Although overall the album is best described as "acoustic country" the instrumental fiddle tunes feature flawless flatpicking guitar performances a la Doc Watson, and the blues of Mississippi John Hurt are fingerpicked with an obvious understanding and respect for the original performer. Baker's original tunes reflect his gift with both lyric and melodic compositions and his great sense of humor.

The Bakers are accompanied on selected cuts by several well-known acoustic musicians: Howie Bursen on frailing banjo, Kelly Powers on fiddle and accordion, Karen Mueller (International Autoharp Champion) on autoharp, and Madeline MacNeil and Jean Sutton on vocals.
