Since their humble beginnings in 1977 the Dirty Dozen Brass band has championed the sound of lowdown horns from the streets of New Orleans to the entire world. The band's first, long overdue, multi-label anthology takes music from ten albums and stuffs it all onto one disc, resulting in 80 minutes of the most lively sounds you'll hear this side of Bourbon St. From spirituals ("Just a Closer Walk with Thee"), to R&B (Marvin Gaye's "Inner City Blues"), Crescent City classics (The Meters' "Cissy Strut"), Charlie Parker covers ("Bongo Beep") and groove-happy originals, the horn, percussion and later guitar augmented outfit keeps the funk flames fanned. Greasy and fluid sousaphone bass parts by mainstay Kirk Joseph kick up the second line dust, while the punchy five piece horn section blows with the intensity of a Crescent City hurricane, both in unison and taking solos that move from soul to jazz and back again. These fifteen songs only scratch the surface, as the band's remarkable collaborations with Dr. John and Elvis Costello are MIA. The compilers, instead, successfully chose tracks representative of the group's versatile jazz and roots approach. It's nearly impossible to play this album and stay seated, and who would want to? The compilation captures the heart of New Orleans' most passionate and well-known brass band that finds the funk regardless of which genre they decide to delve into. --Hal Horowitz

Album Description

The first career-spanning collection from the quintessential N'awlins brass band!

For the past three decades, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band has taken the traditional brass band music of New Orleans, combined it with funk, jazz, gospel and soul, and introduced this special blend of the old and the new to the rest of the world. In the process, they've won the approval of not only fans and critics, but also the taste-making musicians they've collaborated with in the studio—Elvis Costello, Dave Matthews, Modest Mouse and others.

This Is The Dirty Dozen Brass Band Collection is the first compilation to include songs from every album they've released, including four tracks from out-of-print records.

4 out of 5 stars Brass Band.......2007-05-16

This was a gift and I've not heard it, but I know it arrived on time and in good condition.

5 out of 5 stars Funk Perfection.......2006-03-18

This was my first exposure to the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to hear them. Their sound is a sort of perfectly realized funk: Fun tunes, energetic arrangements, and spirited solos. References to the rich musical traditions of New Orleans are ever present and give the music a richness and a sense of history, but this band always sounds fresh and alive. I'll bet their live performances are something special.

Since I wear my Ipod when I run and work out, I need snappy tunes that hold my interest - my current playlist uses more songs from this CD than any other in my collection - I think that's a good measure of the fun you will have with it!

5 out of 5 stars Top-notch overview of their finest moments.......2005-07-19

The Dirty Dozen Brass Band have jammed with more bands than almost anyone else. Widespread Panic, Dave Matthews, Dr. John, Elvis Costello, the Black Crowes, Modest Mouse, David Bowie are just a few. The thing is, many people may not be familiar with some of the Dirty Dozen's own albums, many of which are now out-of-print. This brand new collection includes tracks from the ten albums released during the Dirty Dozen's 27-year career. The album kicks off with the classic "My Feet Can't Fail Me Now" and doesn't slow down until the closing track "Just A Closer Walk With Thee" from their Funeral For A Friend album. In between you'll find some of the most inspired and infectious grooves ever committed to disc.

Everybody digs New Orleans. Why not check out the best of the best New Orleans has to offer?

5 out of 5 stars The perfect introduction!.......2005-04-18

I've got a few albums by the Dozen, but when I saw this in my local record store, I bought it on impulse. I'm sure glad I did. There are a number of early tracks I'd never heard before, and the selection from more recent albums can't be faulted. If there's any one essential Dozen album (most of them come pretty darn close), it's this one. Get it without "fail"!

As a hard-hitting Afro-beat orchestra that embellishes vintage Fela-style grooves with touches of gritty funk and fiery salsa, Antibalas quickly won over a sizable local audience in New York City with its sweaty live shows and relentlessly danceable rhythms. But while the band's past two efforts sounded fresh amidst a landscape of retro-rock cool, the discs never measured up to the band's galvanizing live show: Liberation Afrobeat Vol. 1 was a piecemeal effort of live and studio material; Talkatif was woefully short. Now on Who Is This America, the band constructs a great-sounding 70-minute studio effort where the seven songs are skillfully woven together, not because they all sound like one long Afro-beat song, but because there is imaginative arrangements and tasty musicianship. Here multiple percussion players are the launch pad and the funky horn charts ignite liftoff whether it's the tightly wound "Indictment" or the slowly building "Sister." Undoubtedly the band's finest work to date. --Tad Hendrickson

4 out of 5 stars If only more U.S. pop bands asked the same question...........2007-05-07

Listening to this cd after watching TV for several hours was like a mind cleanser. Great rhythms and beats, very complex, and very funky. The band is absolutely enormous, but tight like a drum. The artwork on the cover and inside is beautiful and subtle. The lyrics are poetic and simple. I do find myself wishing the songs were a bit shorter at times, but other times I appreciate the endurance quality of their lengths. My two year old loves this stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2005-07-13

You can't deny the incredible horn riffs put forth by this album, they're simply amazing. You'll get goosebumps listening to this album for the first time. Although at times some of the songs can become tedious, it is still one of the best jazz albums out there.

5 out of 5 stars long live antibalas.......2004-08-21

let's face it, antibalas can do no wrong. all the way from "liberation..." and "talkatif" to "who is this america?" every album a must have. this album brings political awareness to the forefront along with tight percussion, pulsating horns and thought-provoking lyrics.
but i have to admit, to get the full antibalas experience, i highly recommend going to one of their shows where you can't help but dance until the very end. antibalas deserves respect, not just as musicians, but also as caring citizens of this world who strive to bring issues to the ears of many who are deaf and make this world a more aware and peaceful place to live. with everything going on in the world today, we need more bands like antibalas.

5 out of 5 stars Antibalas- is more than its music.......2004-07-10

After many years of anticipation, I saw Antibalas in NYC. Being from LA- and somewhat distant-at least geogrphically- it was a blissful experience.
Antibalas, has become more entrenched in its political ideology. Unabashedly anti establishment, the album is provactively inducive. Despite the instrumental monotony throughout its albums, Antibalas delivers this time. From the graphics of the CD cover to its lyrics, it indeed questioning of our system. Political Economy, Globalization, Racism, philosophy, history; it is all here. Cant wait to see the Antibalas again in LA.

5 out of 5 stars great recording but you've gotta see them live.......2004-07-08

This band truly dedicates themselves to the feel of the groove. Their live show is full of energy that defies you to remain still....truly something to behold.

this is the third time i have replaced this album...don't ask...but yes it is just that good. Perfect fit for the neo-sol/jazz/scat music lover...definite must have...put it in and let it ride....

    5 out of 5 stars A powerful songtress, a great talent.......2006-12-02

The first thing I'd recommend to those not familiar with N'Dambi is not to expect Erykah Badu. Though the two are actually best friends, draw upon similar musical inspiration, and creative enough to write their own material, they represent two unique vocalists. With that in mind, this CD is a great intro to N'Dambi's vocal and writing gifts. Her fluency in the vocabulary of Jazz lifts many of the tracks, and is a testament to her superb artistry. The so-called "Neo-Soul" label is just too limited, to describe what she does. In addition to being a two CD set of original compositions (including remakes of songs from her first CD), the musicianship and production is top notch all the way. This is very compelling music by a gifted performer, with great passion for her art. Being an independent artist, N'Dambi is not as well known as she should be. This CD however, is for those who appreciate great talent and unbridled artistry, which towers above the 'run of the mill' stuff, that is much of today's popular music.

4 out of 5 stars Still the Best CD I have Bought in Awhile Yet.......2006-09-10

I wish she would just sing w/o the gimmicky scats. The album is great nonetheless.

5 out of 5 stars N'Dambi: Black Star from Planet Badu.......2005-09-16

    [...]
Die-hard Erykah Badu fans all know that one of her former back-up singers and Dallas, TX, friend -- N'Dambi -- is equally bad. As in awesome. Period.

Less commercial, and perhaps more an original than the quite original Erykah, N'Dambi is arguably the ultimate Neo Soul artist for '70's Jazz-Funk fans. As in this sister's style is so intricate, she's sort of not even Neo Soul. She feels like the real deal from back in the day. From many different, better days.

These are The Six Degrees of N'Dambi, based on her superb, now classic double-CD set from 2002,
    Tunin Up & Cosignin...

First Degree: Her raw emotion and adeptness with classic funk rhythms is as finely tuned as Bilal's. In fact, in some way, I consider N'Dambi the female answer to Bilal and wish these two would get together in a studio sometime. But where Bilal takes powerful hip-hop turns, N'Dambi masterfully dives into pure jazz.

Second Degree: That laid-back sound that put Erykah on the map? N'Dambi has this gift, too. They both exude a talent for a sound that says, "I'm way too busy telling you what's up here, pouring out my heart -- and having fun doing it -- to fret singing within the commercial norm." N'Dambi doesn't have a pretentious atom in her voice. Au natural and earthy.

Third Degree: Heavy (and these days rare) use of live studio musicians that jam in the style of Chaka Khan's killer band, Rufus. However, N'Dambi's band throws down serious jazz, too. There's consistently flawless bass work going on, at times reminding me of Ron Carter (the genius behind Badu's Certainly) or the spirited Marcus Miller. (Check out producer Kenneth Crouch's bananas bass in Black Star!!!) The musicanship on this double-CD is simply off the chain.

Fourth Degree: N'Dambi sometimes triggers a double-take with her pared down, plain-truth sound, "neo reincarnating" Nina Simone. (Check out Ode 2 Nina and Crazy World.) I'll even say that her unique interpretation is to purposely go flat and off into tricky keys at times. But it's cool as all get-out! Somewhat like Cassandra Wilson, N'Dambi's fearless about doing her own distinctive thing (in higher octives, though).

Fifth Degree: About that smoking band again... They take to the stratosphere two songs with a jazzy House music beat: Day Dreamer and Call Me. In both songs, the singer gets to the bottom of things. In one, getting deep inside your head to get up and get yours in life; in the other, basically asking, like Roberta Flack, Where Is the Love, baby?

Sixth Degree: With all of the above said, N'Dambi sounds precisely like... no one. Which is exactly why we dig her vibe. True to the meaning of her Muslim name, this sister's work is without a doubt, "most beautiful."

5 out of 5 stars OFF KEY? NAW "ON DECK!".......2005-04-10

I was a bit skeptical about scooping up this CD as one cat here reviewed it and spoke of her "atrocious" vocals but I got it anyway. Now, I have an idea on why he thought that but I don't think he's well-versed in the art of "scatting." See, in scatting, you can go off key and it not really matter, just as in Jazz one gets to mess around between the more common/expected notes, called a blue note (A flatted note, especially the third or seventh note of a scale, in place of an expected major interval). Well, same thing applies in scatting...you can mess around like that all under artistic license, it's all good. Now..after saying that...

There was a time where she PURPOSELY sang out of key as a joke with her producer and it was documented as being just that from their dialogue after they finished the "riff" of the song.

Ok, now, this double CD is pretty damn strong, folks! This is a nice blend of Jazz and Neo remniscent of Ledisi's "Feeling Orange But Sometimes Blue." This is a perfect "Get-together" CD to play as you and your close friends sit back and take in the smoothness of the afternoon as it mellowly swings into the evening. Great production and N'Dambi, as always, delivers the goods vocally. Get this CD, folks. Period.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Talented young group of musicians.......2006-12-27

I took a chance on this CD after seeing the trumpet player Troy Andrews on television (studio 60) and wanting to hear more...I was not disappointed.

In places on this enjoyable CD the youth of this group shows - in some ways this makes for a raw, fresh sound. In others it simply reminds you that these young men have years ahead of them to hone their craft. In places the CD really takes off though, most notably on the third track, "get down", a hard driving tuba-bass heavy funkified jam that will have you dancing around in your living room in your boxers, hoping the neighbors aren't looking in your windows. This track was worth the price of admission alone.

I love the blend of styles, though it doesn't work as well for some of the tracks as others. Still, there's plenty of good music on this CD, and I'm glad to have supported these players with my purchase. I almost with the entire CD was funk, as that is what these guys seem to do best. Echoes of Tower of Power shine through in places - they all seem to play more confident on the funk tracks.

I gave it 4 stars, but 3.5 seems a bit more appropriate. No insult to the group at all - the music is excellent, but production quality is not entirely consistent, and in places it comes off as a bit raw. Where it works though, it really works - track 7 is a terrific funky horn-based jam and they're really in the pocket throughout. Likewise with the aforementioned "get down" (track 3), and track 8 is another bright spot on the CD.

I look forward to hearing what these guys do with their bright musical futures. If you're a fan of upbeat funky music with a tight horn section and subtle hammond organ throughout you will probably enjoy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Stanley's best work in the '80s.......2005-06-12

I luv this record to death. 'Cuz it's sure is my all-time favorite and mostly an introuduction to Stanley Clarke. I been listening to it since day 1 (1994 or 1995) and it's still sound more mature than it has been on his previous records. It does features an all-star cast: the late George Howard (RIP), the late Gregory Hines (whom he features on two tracks above, RIP), his long-time mentor and partner George Duke, my label-mate Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, just to name a few.

There's not enuff I can't say 'bout it but 2 say all the songs incl. the remake of Janet Jackson "Funny How Time Flies (When You're Having Fun)" is outstanding. It does features a solo from Freddie which u consider playing real smoothly like Miles or Chuck Mangione or whatever maybe even Rick Braun or Chris Botti.

Also on "Workin' Man" (such a sweet song) is mostly like a rock or jazz shuffle that take u 'cross where u at. Then on "Tradition" (one of my all-time favorites from the album) is mostly a good breakout reminds me of Miles Davis' KIND OF BLUE which I listen too alot. Among other tracks like "Come Take My Hand", the title track, "Bassically Taps" (big groove and nice work from my man and fav. actor Gregory Hines), "I Want to Play for Ya", Charles Mingus' work "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" (once remaked by Clarke himself and others like Spyro Gyra whom among my favorite jazz group of all-time, etc.), etc. are real smooth and very touchy.

This is a great album to keep just b/c it's a must for all jazz fans and all musicians who played in the jazz band and marching band whom I played backed in high school. I sure this wouldn't disappoint you @ all. Stanley Clarke is truly my main artist to date. I luv him 2 death.

When I first heard this disc it was a breath of fresh air for me and a relief at the same time. I thought, "At last, Stanley's doing GOOD albums again!"

Given the schlocky albums he put out from 1979 and throughout the 80's, I was VERY skeptical at first. But my doubts that Stanley still had it were pretty much erased upon first listen. Here, Stanley has shown how diverse a musical pallette he has:

The two cuts with tap dancer Gregory Hines are nothing short of FUN and BRILLIANT simultaneously, as Stanley pulls off some stunning chord melody bass to Hine's mercilessly complex tap rhythms! "Goodbye Porkpie Hat" the old Charles Mingus chestnut gets a very high-tech 1980's treatment here, featuring Wayne Shorter on soprano sax. Other tracks like "Workin' Man" and "Stories To Tell" just get flat out fierce like the Stanley of old, no fuzak here.

The only thing that I din't much care for was the album's now rather dated 1980's production (heavy reverb, tons of synths etc), hence the 4 stars as opposed to five. Sucha shame he didn't do more albums like this after for it sure was good to hear the REAL Stanley Clarke a-slappin' again!

    5 out of 5 stars A Period Of Transition.......2003-09-24

    Basically a jazzier retooling of Clarke's "Hideaway"-era
sound highlited by Gregory Hines tap dancing "percussion" on the
tital track opener and the closing "Basically Taps".Stanley's
cover of Mingus's "Goodbye,Pork Pie Hat" embellishes the original
melody so much that it's very hard to tell what it is-the production more like Ben Sidran of the same vintage then anything. Then again that sound permeates most of this album as well notably on the funkiest track "I Wanna Play For Ya'" and
the Police-like "Stories To Tell".The very jazzy "Tradition"
shows Clarke in a rare post-bop setting and overall this is about the closest Stanley Clarke ever came to a fairly straight-ahead jazz album, even if it's still very soulful and electric.
    A notable point of reference.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent Electric Bass Playing.......2002-02-13

The first and last tracks on this album are worth the price of admission. Wicked funky bass playing. These two tracks really show off the strengths of the electric bass.

If you are an electric bass player, this album will keep you busy for a while, listening to Mr. Clarke's excellent work. His range of tone qualities and techniques are amply exhibited here. This is a showcase for Stanley Clarke's virtuosity, and really an encyclopedia of the state of electric bass technique at the end of the 20th century.

That being said, many of Clarke's tunes lie flat. They lack direction and fail to hold the listener's interest(at least this listener's interest). Charles Mingus he is not. Stanley Clarke's genius is in the expressiveness and technique of his playing.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Stanley's Later Years.......2001-09-08

This is still one of my favorite Stanley albums. The first and last tracks are duets with Gregory Hines tap dancing. A first I'm sure, but I can take it or leave it. To me, "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" is really the highlight of this record and probably my favorite version of that tune. It reminds me of Stanley jamming with Weather Report - both at their peak. "I Want to Play for Ya" is a little bit of that old school funky talking bass thang. It worked well on some of his older solo albums like Journey to Love and School Days and it really works here. What we get on this record is a mature artist at the peak of his songwriting skills. Stanley is STANLEY. He does not have to play at 200 mph every minute. What he does is craft some great songs, beautiful melodies, great sounds, and smoking solos. This is the type of CD that if it falls into your CD changer has a way of staying there for a while.

5 out of 5 stars Many tiny explosions between your ears.......2004-11-28

Go ahead, life is short, buy it. Also buy "Grayfolded", which I have never gotten tired of after dozens (okay, maybe not a lot of dozens) of listens.

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely essential.......2004-06-28

69/96 is perhaps the definitive set of John Oswald's experimental Plunderphonics, a two-disc retrospective covering most of his most famous and often brilliant work, from the entireity of the ultra rare Electrax (or Rubiyat, as Electra renamed it) EP to selections from Plexure, Grayfolded, the original (and highly illegal) Plunderphonics CD, and Discosphere.

For the uninformed, Plunderphonics is sampling taken to the next level, songs manipulated, sometimes beyond recognition and often to completely alter their meaning. Just to briefly list some of the tracks on this album would be difficult. There's Chuck Berry songs compressed down to 10 seconds or less (the Barely tracks), Dolly Parton singing a duet with a slowed-down version of herself (Pretender), the Kronos Quartet compared and contrasted with a generic heavy metal band (Mach), a mashup of the Carly Simon and Faster Pussycat renditions of "Vain" (Vane), a marathon of different singers and their renditions of the Phil Spector song "Ebb Tide" (Ebb), and many many more. It's extremely hard to describe half of these songs without making them sound like less than they are. It's popular music completely mutated into something completely above and beyond most anything pop music has to offer, and some of the tracks showcased were even ahead of their time (such as "Power," a combination of Led Zeppelin riffs and televangical ranting that could almost count as one of the first rap songs).

Augmenting the 62 tracks found in this collection is a comprehensive interview with John Oswald that gives key insight into most of the tracks on the discs: how they were made, what they were made for, the history of Plunderphonics, and much much more. Almost no stone is unturned, and some of the songs he mentions in passing that didn't make the cut for this set also serve to pique one's interest. Maybe another Plunderphonics box set will eventually see the light of day if we're lucky.

All told, this is an extremely well done and exceptionally brilliant package, and should be essential for fans of experimental music or to those who would like to know exactly what sort of possibilities sampling can hold as a medium in and of itself. I'd recommend getting this as soon as you can. While the copyright lawyers haven't made a fuss over this album yet, who knows when they might.

    5 out of 5 stars diverging opinions.......2004-06-21

I've found that, every time I find something that I personally find to be absolutely wonderful, some other people will agree with me, but there are quite likely just as many people who have exactly the opposite opinion. When Smooth Earl (whose opinion you will find immediately below) says "I was doing stuff like that on my tape recorder back in '83 when I was in 4th grade, and I did a better job than this guy", it reminds me all those people who say their dog could make a better painting than Jackson Pollock (or Pablo Picasso).
In some cases these people really can't see the difference between a smudge and a Pollock. That's OK. Perhaps to Smooth Earl the entire oeuvre of John Oswald really does sound like something he did in the 4th grade (when are you going to release your album Earl, so we can compare?).
Poor hearing-deprived man, but still, everyone is entitled to have their opinion.
What I object to is Earl saying, "You will be severely disappointed just like me." What a stupid, narrow-minded statement. I obviously don't share your opinion Earl, and there others who don't think like you do - please check out the reviews at the bottom of the page.
I wish that there were listening samples for each of the 60 tracks in this box set, because, like it or not, there is undeniably more variety in this package than in any other musical offering I can think of. Sure there probably is something here for everyone to dislike, but for anyone with open ears, and a desire for surprises, this is a cornucopia of all kinds of music; each kind presented in a new way, sometimes subtly and sometimes brutally.
I suspect that neither Smooth Earl or "a music fan" listened any further than the first couple of tracks, because when they make their analogies to changing radio stations every two seconds they obviously haven't listened to Rainbow, which is an elegiac, glistening shifting of perfectly consonant chords played by the 101 String Orchestra like one big wave; or PreLieu where a live string quartet plays a sinuous, sensual variation of one of Beethoven's prettiest tunes; or Anon which is a chorus of the beautiful voice of Tim Buckley.
And then there is the fast-paced stuff. Perhaps Smooth Earl could edit in the 4th grade as well as Oswald, but I've never heard anyone who can dice and splice as intricately and precisely as can be found in any number of the cuts on Plunderphonic.
In addition to getting a lot of music in this box set, one will also discover a treasure chest of detailed notes (in the 40,000 word interview Oswald sometimes speaks as acrobatically as he composes) and a lot of often very funny visuals which are another way to get an idea of what the music is like. For example, look at the cover collage above: a group photo of U2 has been transformed into a band of Frankensteins, in which David Bowie and Barbra Streisand, or Boy George and Billy Gibbons get grafted into one person.
Oswald suggests that Power (composed in 1975) is perhaps the first Rap song. It was created independent of the concurrent experiments of Afrika Bambaataa and crew, predates Byrne and Eno's similar experiments by 5 years, and in its use of Led Zepplin riffs it predates the Beastie Boys by a decade. One of the reasons some of this music sounds so unusual is that it was created so much ahead of its time. It's kind of like the case of Trout Mask Replica (which also gets transformed by Oswald).
Unlike other commentators I won't presume to say whether you should get this set or not. But I think that any listener whose range of listening interests can go from Stravinsky to Metallica to Public Enemy might be intrigued. Or any one who wants to hear an Agatha Christie story as if it was transformed by James Joyce... or Dolly Parton slowly turn into a man... or Bill Frisell playing with Elvis Presley... Debussy sung by a bird... an almost brand new Doors song ... Anton Webern and the Beach Boys ... Fine Young Cannibals with Annie Lennox (ten years before mash-ups)... a cubist Count Basie... Madonna granulated... it's all here.

1 out of 5 stars Even one star is too much -- DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE.......2002-04-19

Yeah, I heard about this "Plunderphonics" thing in SPIN and ROlling Stone, and they went on and on about how "essential" and "awesome" it was. Then I thought this guy in the review right before mine was just being a "hater" or whatever, but DANG if he wasn't right!

I'm a fan of remixes and samples of sorts, so this compilation piqued my curiosity, but ... I should've saved my money. Yeah, sure, you'll recognize a snippet here and there of a song or a popular artist's voice, but it's so choppy ... and there's no "flow" to it ... it is not music of any kind, just irritating noise. Just like the other guy said, it's like some lil' kid won't quit playing with the radio so it skips to every other station every 2 seconds. Heck, I was doing stuff like that on my tape recorder back in '83 when I was in 4th grade, and I did a better job than this guy.

If you have been wanting to buy this compilation, do yourself a favor: close your eyes, take a deep breath, open your eyes, and LET IT GO. You will be severely disappointed just like me.

This is probably one of the most annoying compilations I have acquired. While intriguing as a concept, this "music of the last fifty years in a blender" approach comes off as rather grating. A bit like someone constantly changing the radio station without stopping.
