Great Sampling Collection.......2007-07-29
Over the past thirty years, my father and I have been collecting film music on various formats--vinyl, tape, reel-to-reel, CD, recording it from the movie, even. This collection is a great starter for someone who wants to start owning movie music. Lots of big hitters, including Hermann, Barry, Conti, Mancini, and Goldsmith as well as some contemporary scores that are great, too. This is the type of collection I would make for a friend who asks "what scores should I start with?"
Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13
This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.
Excellent collection with fine performances.......2007-03-28
Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.
"essential film scores from 1939 to 2004 ~ Incredible Music".......2005-05-16
When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "The Incredible Film Music Box", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades from 1939 through and up to the present 2004
There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!
Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.
Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

Neo Soul at its best.......2007-05-08
This set delivers on the ultimate side of passion with an intimate groove for the first two weeks after recieving this disc I fould myself listening to it over and over again. What I think that moved me about this music was the suddle tenderness the laid back groove and the lyrical connection that I felt while listening. This is the music one would listen to who is totally fed up with the mainstream music format.
3.5 stars.......2007-03-02
I heard how ?uestlove was saying that this was a classic and all that, so I finally got around to purhcasing it the other day. I don't know if there's something wrong with me or what, but this album isn't capturing me all too much like all of these other reviewers. It's nice and laid-back, but some of the songs just don't have melodies and production that catch my attention. Some of the songs are also very repetitive. Not a classic to me.I began listening to their sophomore effort, The Tortoise and the Hare, today and it is much better, in my opinion.
TOOK ME A COUPLA' LISTENS BUT..........2007-02-08
GOOD RIDIN' MUSIK. TRACK NO. 4 IS MY FAVORITE WITH 6 AND 7 BEING MY LEAST.
I LOVE THE WAY THEY START THEIR TRACKS. IT IS DEFINITELY ON MY REPLAY LIST.
GOOD SOLID AND CLEAR VOICES FROM BOTH FEMALES.
I'M DIGGIN' EM.
Once & Future - actually 4.5.......2005-10-31
I live in Philly and started hearing a lot about these ladies at the onset of the Phily neo-soul revolution. I was lucky enough to see them perform @ The 5 Spot and hoped that the word of mouth along the East Coast would help push them into the mainstream spotlight. It saddens me reading these reviews to know how truly foul the record industry is and how difficult it can be for people who seek (as one previous poster coined it) "alternative r&b" to find out about new artists so that we can support them.
Luckily for me I live in Philly and there was enough local buzz about the Jazzies for me to anticipate their debut disc, which I bought the day it was released. They got a lot of play on the local college jazz station, WUHR prior to release so a lot of us got to hear 'The Wound' & 'Unconventional Ways' which are two of the standout songs on the disc and whetted the appetite for more.
The great thing about the duo, Tracey & Mercedes is that they wrote the entire album which accounts for their heartfelt singing on each song. I love how each took turns at lead vocals - Tracey with her richly soulful voice and Mercedes, with her ethereal soprano and then perfectly melded their voices together as backup. Also production by Scott Storch, one of the premiere hip hop producers & backup by The Roots is EXCELLENT. Neither detracts from the singers, just adds to the overall beauty of this project. I can only imagine that those who said that songs sound alike truly did not listen to this disc or only listened once and made snap judgements because if you truly like alternative r&b, you must give discs more than one/two listens to truly appreciate the music.
As previously stated, the outstanding tracks are: THE WOUND (a hauntingly beautiful ballad), UNCONVENTIONAL WAYS (this is the song that made me fall in love with this duo, beautiful love song like no other you will or have heard on the radio to date). Following closely behind these two are: SAIL THE SEAS, BREAKTHROUGH, RELATED TO ME & LET IT GO.
If you appreciate alternative r&b, give this duo a chance, you will not be disappointed!

I purchased this CD almost three years ago and have not regretted it since. This is a MUST have for any R&B/Neo-Soul fan. I picked it up on the recommendation of Tower Records on the Avenue of the Arts in Philadelphia. One of the best CD's to come along in a long while. Their second CD, The Tortoise and the Hare, is even better IMO, but this is a solid debut. Get it NOW!

perfect ten.......2006-08-31
Ten songs. Ten songs with lyrics that actually make sense and that, most incredibly for this age of popular music, contain perfect scansion, as well as elegant rhyme schemes.
Ten wonderful vocal melodies, each of them complex yet catchy. Ten perfect vocal performances.
Ten perfect instrumental performances to support them. Ten perfectly mixed and produced tracks, tracks which, by the way, are of such great variety -- from pure modern power metal to old fashioned eighties pop power ballads and everything in between -- that you will listen to this one all the way through every time. Ten tracks you cannot skip, because each of them would be the highlight on virtually any other album in this genre.
This album, on a scale of one to ten: ten.
Okay, that punch line was a little weak. (And for those who might not realize, "Ten" is the name of this band, even though here they are calling themselves Gary Hughes and using guest vocalists -- great ones at that.) But seriously, this has got to be the best arena rock album since Steve Perry left Journey two decades ago. Not a single weak moment anywhere.
best symphonic rock opera of decade.......2005-11-17
I am not going to duplicate this review by writing same thing for Part 2, so listen up! If you like symphonic rock - and of course, I mean here only the best of the genre - then run and buy this CD. Could be kinda hard to do that outside of Europe but I think Amazon still has it in stock.
First of all, compared to a lot of prog/sympho/hard rock albums this one has very very decent lyrics... this is not up to Mary Stewart standards but what did you expect?
Secondly, quality of melodies is extremely high - it is obvious that Gary Hughes put a lot of effort into it. Kinda makes you wonder why his Ten albums suffer from monotony and noticeable lack of musical diversity... who knows? Perhaps he simply was inspired in this case, eh?
Best numbers: At The End Of The Day, Shapeshifter (with stunning voice of Irene Jansen), King For A Day, Lies (Part 1); Kill The King, I Still Love You, Demon Down, Once And Future King (Part 2).
Also there is a bonus track which I have but its name is missing so I have no idea... it is also really good! Perhaps it just didn't gel with the other numbers so it is missing on both standard issues (Europe and Japan).
Hughes managed to gather an amazing ensemble of performers for this undertaking and it paid off. He himself sings King Arthur's part, then we have here DC Cooper of Royal Hunt fame, Lana Lane, Bob Catley from Magnum, Sean Harris from Diamond Head, Arjen Lukassen on keyboards (of course), Dougie White, and bunch of other well-known professionals.
Overall athmosphere is just right and, once again, truly one of the best albums of the decade!
I Love This Album!!!.......2004-01-27
Yes, I love this album. I've had it about three weeks now and I listen to it at least once a day. Even my teenage daughter sorta likes it. Shes says it's not as weird as the other music I have and sometimes force her to listen to in the car. The music actually varies from song to song with most of the songs falling in the melodic progressive rock category.
Once and Future King is a Rock Opera, loosely based upon T.H.White's classic King Arthur novel of the same name. This rock opera is the creation of Gary Hughes, the lead vocalist of the British AOR group TEN. O.F.K.,however, is strictly Hughes' baby, consisting of two separate and separately sold CDs, Part 1 and Part 2. I have Part 2 as well and it is also good but I prefer Part 1.
After composing this masterpiece, Hughes, who has been a guest vocalist on at least one Arjen Anthony Lucassen's* own rock opera's, borrowed a page from the master and enlisted Arjen and several other very talented guest musicians for his own rock opera.
*For those not familiar with Lucassen, he is the creator and genius behind numerous concept albums including Ambeon, Ayreon and Star One. Additionally, he has been a valued guest musician on numerous projects in addition to this album, having worked with Lana Lane, Erik Norlander, Rocket Scientists, Within Temptation and Glass Hammer.

Damien Wilson, sings "Excalibur" (The Prologue)
Highlights:
"Excalibur",
Upon a pagan land in darkness came,
A black and heartless spawn of seed,
A cruel and wretched plague,
For the mists of time a king lay slain,
Basically an intro, starting out with a piano and bell solo with background thunder and choir reminiscent of a sound track, leading into a very accessible medium fast paced, melodic prog rock number with very catchy chorus. Excellent singing by Damien Wilson.
"Shapeshifter",
The perfect spell you could not resist,
I cast it well, beguiled and bewitched,
The evening fell and knocked like before,
But this time Hell had come to your door,
This is a great, great song in a mainstream rock vein, reminiscent of Garbage a bluesy number with just excellent vampy, singing by Irene Jansen and great backing vocals by the cast. Who is this chick? Well, I checked and she is the sister of Floor Jansen (After Forever). No wonder she's so good, Floor's arguably the best singer in the Galaxy.
Irene is apparently with a band called Karma. I will be checking them out!
"King for a Day"
True Gods, they sleep,
Locked in their mountain of dreams,
They wait for the call, for the hunger,
Thry must be freed,
This is slow rock song, almost a ballad, almost a waltz, a truly wonderful composition, beautifully sung by Bob Catley of Magnum. My respect for Gary Hughes is growing and growing.
"In Flames"
The time has come,
There's no other way now,
This Crime is done,
It tore what remained of our reason,
Another marvelous song, a medium paced, somewhat anthemic, ordered, marching style, rock number, with Bob Catley again lending his superlative style on the vocals. Great percussion and guitar.
Conclusion, there's only one conclusion. The music is wonderful and easy to listen to, the musicians are top notch and the singers are emotional and captivating so, buy, buy, buy, buy. And this one's not that hard to find for a change, so buy, buy, buy, buy!!!
Simply incredible!.......2003-09-19
The first word that comes to mind when thinking about this album is -- WOW! What an incredible project Gary Hughes has put together. Gary Hughes, lead singer of AOR/melodic European rock band Ten, has a lot of projects; he's a busy guy. And this just might be his best project ever. The album chronicles the famous British legend of King Arthur. It is labeled as a "rock opera" but don't let that label dissuade you. I have to admit, I was a little wary of what this album would be like (rock opera?), but I took a chance. And I'm glad I did! Hughes has assembled a stellar cast of AOR/melodic rock musicians such as Lana Lane, Bob Catley, Danny Vaughn, and my favorite singer on the CD: Damian Wilson. Each "plays" a different character, which is to say each sings lead on a different song or two. The songwriting is impressive; a nice mix of heavy and medium tempo songs. The songs flow together nicely. I think of it as more of a concept album more than a rock opera. And the songs speak beyond the King Arther concept as on "The Reason Why" which contains the lyric "show me the reason why we enslave one another". A good question for more than just King Arthur to ponder. Favorite tracks include "Excalibur", "The Reason Why", and "King for a Day". Awesome stuff. All I can say is that I cannot wait for Part 2!
A truly excellent melodic rock epic!.......2003-09-15
Gary Hughes's Once and Future King joins Missa Mercuria as one of the absolute best of the new breed of rock operas. This superb release is based on the Legend of King Arthur and is split up into two parts. Part I features the following players: Gary Hughes (Ten) as Arthur, Lana Lane as Guinevere, Danny Vaughn (Tyketto) as Lancelot, Bob Catley (Magnum) as Merlin, Irene Jansen as Morgana, and Sean Harris (Diamond Head) as Galahad. Ayreon's Arjen Luccassen and Damian Wilson contribute to the disc as well.
This is one of the best albums I've heard in a long time. Gary Hughes really outdid himself here, assembling a cast of some of the best singers the AOR/Melodic rock genre has to offer and combining their talents with a great story, great musicianship, and a vision that is evident throughout the album. The various singers really embrace their characters and put their best efforts into making the listener connect with them. My favorite performance of this rock opera is Danny Vaughn as Lancelot, though I imagine that may change when I hear DC Cooper's contribution to Part II. The prog fan in me can't help but wish there were a couple of instrumental songs on the album, but that is only a minor drawback. Once and Future King is a perfect example of all that is great about AOR/melodic rock. While it can get a bit heavy at times, this probably shouldn't be considered a metal opera like Ayreon or Star One, though it will certainly appeal to fans of those two projects. If you are into melodic rock and metal, I highly recommend checking this one out.

Customer Reviews:
An excellent follow-up to Part I.......2003-11-08
Part II of Gary Hughes's all-star melodic rock opera based on Arthurian legend lives up to the high standard set by Part I, and is an excellent example of all that is good about the melodic rock genre. Most of the main players from the first volume return, including Gary Hughes as King Arthur, Lana Lane as Guinevere, and Bob Catley as Merlin. Also appearing on this volume are DC Cooper as King Aelle, Doogie White as Mordred, and Edenbridge siren Sabine Edelsbacher as Nimue. Hughes and Catley are the standout vocalists on this disc. DC Cooper's performance was a bit disappointing, as the part written for him did not allow him to use his amazing vocal range. All in all, Once and Future King Part II is an excellent disc, just like Part I was. It's got a great story, great instrumentals, and some absolutely fantastic vocal performances. It is also packaged quite well; the CD comes in a digipack with cover and booklet artwork by fantasy artist Chris Achilleos. I heartily recommend this CD to anyone who is into melodic rock and metal. Those who enjoyed other rock/metal operas like Ayreon, Star One, or Missa Mercuria should find Once and Future King to be a nice addition to their collections.

Album Description
Beneath the layers of waking consciousness there is a swirling tide of intricate music that exists intermingling subconscious human thought with the songs of the stars. In this half-dream state, one can find Mingo's "The Once and Future World," a thickly-layered experience with swooning analogue textures and subtle rhythms. The listener is drawn into a deep, heady realm perfect for the inner-space explorer equipped with headphones, and the dim lighting suitable for a midnight foray into the realm of the planets. Many secret treasures lie glimmering, buried, awaiting discovery for the intrepid explorer.

A truly excellent melodic rock epic!.......2005-12-20

For fans of late 60's - early 70's British Psych.......2004-04-30
"Thank God someone from Sydney nascent late `70's punk scene was listening to 60's London, Liverpool, Manchester rather than (as well as?) Detroit and New York! With this collection, Steve Lucas and his Pubert Brown Fridge Occurrence cohorts redress the balance and remind the world that it wasn't just Britain's Nuggets garage obscurities or America's art rock or shock rock outsiders that were impacting on the impressionable minds of the world's youth and Australia's in particular. The Beat groups that burst out in the wake of the Beatles were making gems just as amazing, just as adventurous, often just as hilarious as anything that came out of the punk scene 15 years ago. Here on one disc is the impact of those groups, in all their manifestations, from pure pop to vaudeville, art house to fun house, all delivered with tender loving care but with tongue set firmly in cheek, just the way it should. This record fairly sweats Fab, pop to smile away the day, or perhaps a slightly inebriated evening or three." - Michael Smith, Drum Media
