REAL LIFE.......2007-06-26
Real Life is the kind of album that makes you think and wonder about it days after the last time you heard it, and makes you kick yourself when you want to hear it right now all the way through and you can't find the cd in your car, or when you realize you haven't uploaded it onto your ipod yet (what?! impossible!). . . There isn't an artist that sounds close, or even close enough to stand in for joan's honest and effortless voice soaring through a mood, liberated from any pedestrian linear storytelling, intimate and timeless. Real Life is the kind of album that you have to listen to at least twice, and after that, it's like a great movie that keeps giving you something new every time you watch it. I thought I'd make comparisons: she's like Laura Nyro-cross-PJHarvey-cross-Chrissy Hines-cross-Nick Drake (the Pink Moon album) -- but it feels lame to me, probably because none of it is really true. It's an either-you-get-it-or-you-don't album -- if you're reading this, get it :).

Rent is usually treated as Jonathan Larson's one and only show, but the truth is that he had a career--albeit a hitless one--before that blockbuster. There was a musical titled JP Morgan Saves the Nation with lyrics by Jeffrey M. Jones and music by Larson. And there was Tick, Tick... Boom!, an autobiographical piece that Larson workshopped for a while before setting it aside and finishing Rent.
In 2001, Tick, Tick is getting a full off-Broadway production, and it's a rather endearing one. Lyrics have never been Larson's strong point, but he was a hell of a melodic composer--and the score here is even poppier than that of Rent (think Top 40 rather than Sondheim). It's hard to pick favorite songs: "Green Green Dress" is built on a rollicking piano boogie, for instance, and "Real Life" and "See Her Smile" are the kind of elegiac ballad that Larson would later perfect with "Seasons of Love." Luckily, this show has a lot more to offer than mere youthful musings. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
A Vocally Dazzling Esparza Rides High on an Exuberant Pre-"Rent" Larson Score.......2007-06-16
Perhaps it's a coincidence that the immensely talented Raúl Esparza plays a character dreading his 30th birthday in this 2001 recording of the hit off-Broadway show by the late Jonathan Larson, while five years later, he would play the elliptical Bobby dreading his 35th birthday in the enthralling 2006 Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth's Company. In both performances, Esparza shows a true affinity for capturing the angst of men undergoing transitional points in their lives which render them emotionally paralyzed. At first glance, Sondheim and Larson would not seem like kindred spirits, but both share a gift for sophisticated lyrics in an unmistakable musical style defined by their oeuvres. Larson even pays tribute to Sondheim in the story's climax and with the sardonic, work-is-hell "Sunday", a take-off of the song with the same name in Sunday in the Park with George.
However, it is the familiar Larson sound of Rent that is heard most in this score - driving, rock-out rhythms with unavoidable pop hooks and yearning, piano-driven ballads. Even the opener, "30/90", is a virtual sound-alike of the bigger show's title tune. If the songs are not quite as polished or even memorable as those in Rent, they feel more personal because the autobiographical story is far more intimate in scale. Set in 1990 in the same SoHo neighborhood as Rent, it's a simple three-character piece about Jon, an aspiring composer who considers giving up his dreams on the verge of his 30th birthday. With charismatic fire, Esparza is equally adept using his beautifully expressive voice in a rock milieu as in a Sondheim character study. He brings energetic brio to finger-snapping rockers like the Twinkie-induced "Sugar" and especially shines on the ballads, "See Her Smile" and the revelatory "Why".
With a slightly pinched voice that reminds me a bit of the Bangles' Susanna Hoffs, Amy Spanger as girlfriend Susan duets nicely with Esparza on the touching "Johnny Can't Decide", the rocking "Green Green Dress", and the comical self-help wordplay of "Therapy". Her shining solo moment comes with the knockout ballad, "Come to Your Senses". As Jon's embattled pal Michael, Jerry Dixon provides powerful vocals, bringing particular warmth to "Real Life" and grit to the fed-up rave "No More". The trio closes the show powerfully with the anthem-like "Louder Than Words". The overall score is a bit derivative and a tad too earnest, but the youthful zest of the cast and Larson's pop craftsmanship more than compensate. Two bonus tracks are offered at the end - an instrumental replay of the opener, "30/90 Playout" and a rare recording of Larson singing "Boho Days" a capella with propulsive hand claps.
Great tunes - great lyrics - great harmonies.......2006-11-04
If you are a fan of the late great Mr. Larson you will love this music. Okay, I have seen the play a couple of times so I know what happens between the songs but this, his autobiography, really moved me. Even my kids like the Green Dress Song.
I hope you like it... The theme is "Actions Speak Louder Than Words" rings true today as the day he wrote it.
John we miss you.
Love the Music.......2006-08-22
I saw this play a few weeks ago, and really enjoyed the music, so I got the CD. The voices, and lyrics are amazing! However, as I often find with CDs of musicals, there wasn't always the right feeling in the voice, particularly in "Therapy" where couple ought to be angry at each other, and it seems more cute on the CD.
Larson Lives.......2006-05-06
I love Tick, Tick... Boom! The show is quite refreshing. The show works so well with three actors. I LOVE "30/90" and "Louder Than Words." Both speak really strongly to the audience because they both are really relatable to anyone's life. Admittedly the middle of the show drags a little, and Spangler's voice can be chipmunkish at times. However those are minor detractions when it comes to this show. It is especially moving if you know Jonathan's story. It is no Rent, but the short piece is really moving
Fantastic Music, but i wouldnt want to see it live.......2006-04-30
I was soo soo very pleased with the music from "Tick...Tick..BOOM!". Rock Operas are my favorite type of musical theatre, and i must say this is one of the best. The storyline, however, although dealing with bohemian problems like AIDS, rehersals, love, didnt meet the power of the music. It was taken from Johnathans original one-man show and made into a three-man show. This was the only way possible to make this conversion, but still it was a dull storyline only going over the time period of one day in the day in the life of Johnathan Larson. Yes, it was an important day, his thirtieth birthday and his friend annoucing that he is HIV positive, but none of this happens until the end. The show lacks obsession, and in order to make a good musical storyline there has to be an obsession. Luckily, the weak storyline is backed with fantastic music, perhaps even better than Rent. 30/90 is my all time favorite song EVER i have listened to it over and over and still am not sick of it. other favorite tracks include:
30/90
Green Green Dress
No More
Sugar
Come To Your Senses (originally from Superbia)
Louder Than Words
and i also enjoy the rest of the songs as well.

This Ron Howard film parlays the troubled story of Nobel laureate John Forbes Nash Jr., a gifted Princeton mathematics professor tormented for decades by paranoid schizophrenia, into something considerably richer than typical Hollywood triumph-against-all-odds fare. Howard has teamed here again with frequent collaborator James Horner, and it's the composer who deftly shades the film's difficult emotional landscape and helps impart a compelling humanity. Horner's first task is not inconsiderable: musically portraying the arcane realm of mathematical theorems that are the story's backdrop. In doing so, the composer leans heavily on modern minimalist technique, bright flourishes that recur briefly throughout an orchestral score that increasingly reflects Nash's bleak inner landscape in its quietly somber and brooding tones. And while Horner has frequently been accused of excessively repeating himself in his scores, the neo-minimalist gambit employed on this reflectively pastoral, postmodernist soundscape neatly nips such criticism in the bud. Nash's triumph is ultimately an intensely personal one, well reflected in Welsh soprano Charlotte Church's lilting performance of the Horner/Will Jennings ballad "All Love Can Be." This enhanced CD also features notes by the director and composer, as well as exclusive photos and the film's trailer. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Haven't I heard this before?.......2007-06-20
As other reviewers will tell you yes this is another Horner machine made soundtrack. But it still sounds good! If you are a Horner fan by all means buy it otherwise "at your own risk"!
And another thing that gets me is no one even bothered to mention "Alicia Discovers Nash's Dark World" I happened to like this one this is the song that plays when he is in the hospital.
a beautiful score.......2007-02-09
James Horner's soundtrack for A BEAUTIFUL MIND is as psychologically intense as the film it so effectively embellishes.
Charlotte Church provides an appropriately eerie and largely non-verbal soprano to this remarkable motion picture score, yet one that would seem only quirky were it not so beautifully embedded in a musical stream that draws one inexorably and almost vicariously into the emotional turbulence of the Princeton mathematician John Nash.
There is an angelic nature to the shape and texture of this music, one that is able to turn demonic as the story line requires. Both by brilliance and by dementia, Nash seems the object of external forces, rising with supreme heroism (at least in the film's version of events) to conquer. The music is there at each score, coaxing the viewer into empathic solidarity with this deeply troubled man and his long-suffering and preternaturally beautiful wife.
This is mood music of the deeply engaging variety. Its lush tonal landscape is achieved under the baton of the composer himself. The score's vast range of volume and expression would certainly have made it a joy to watch in performance.
Alas, we don't have that.
But we have this.
An ethereal, compelling, even gripping tone poem. Buy it.
A Beautiful Mind.......2006-08-09
Absolutely gorgeous - my husband keeps it in his car and listens to it whenever he's driving.
Haunting, lovely, majestic.......2006-04-04
The sound track for "A Beautiful Mind" stayed with me long after the movie. The CD has all the themes that made the movie so emotionally powerfull. James Horner, composer and conductor, perfectly matches the excitement of genius and the terror of mental disability. Charlotte Church's clear and gentle voice compliments the music and used instrumentally creates a haunting refrain. I loved the movie and this music is wonderful.
Dark.......2006-02-20
This is one of the darkest and most emotional soundtrack, and yet it is filled with more inspiring songs.
Best soundtrack ive ever heard.

I've kept my sony walkman around for years so I could listen to the album (on cassette). I am glad to see it on CD. As of writing this the album artwork pictured on the site is different from what is shipped.
Good stuff, but a glaring omission.......2004-12-28
Basically a compilation of "Heartland", "Flame" and the "Babies" maxi single, this is a nice little collection to find its way to CD.
Of course, the huge miss here is not including the original version of "Send Me an Angel". The new version simply does not compare to the original.
I really enjoyed "Flame" and am grateful to find such great tunes included as "Face to Face" and "No Shame". Their take of "Babies" is surprisingly good too.
If you're looking for "Heartland", it has been reissued on CD. It's well worth seeking out that disk for the original version of "Send Me an Angel".

Soul Stirring.......2007-03-28
Listening to Karunesh's "Joy of Life" is a soul-stirring experience. Each cut is an intricate blend of haunting vocals, violin, guitar and subtle ethereal percussion dancing beautifully with Karunesh's masterful devotional flute melodies. Appropriately titled, this is spiritual "jammin'" at its best. Inspiring.
Always Love Karunesh!.......2007-01-10
Once again, Karunesh has proved to be a source of joy and inspiration.
The Joy of Karunesh.......2006-12-24
A collection of placid world-fusion grooves redolent of India, perfect for winding down and opening up. Similar in style to 2004's Call of the Mystic, Joy of Life finds German-born producer and multi-instrumentalist Karunesh slowing things down just a bit, reining in some of the synthesizers and electronic beats, and giving more space to the acoustic performers. Among those featured are fellow spiritual travelers from the occident, Govi and Chinmaya Dunster, who bring their skills with the sarod and sitar to some of the album's more upbeat tracks. On hand from the Call of the Mystic sessions is violinist Avinash, as well as Bikram, the bansuri player whose plaintive and at times playful flute is the central voice in these recordings. Captured in Karunesh's Hawaiian studio, The Joy of Life is a quiet album radiating warmth, comfort, and peace, and will be appreciated by those who favor a touch of spice in their ambient/newage music.

Customer Reviews:
Popsike Extremedies.......2007-08-01
The 99 tracks on Real Life Permanent Dreams run the range from Pop to Freakbeat to early Prog. Some are from famous artists (The Kinks, Donovan, Jethro Tull). But, most are obscure although a few appear on similar compilations like Mojo's Acid Drops, Nuggets II and Paisley Pop.
There are a few covers here as well. The Fleur De Lys' Circles is very close to The Who's original. Julie Driscoll's Season Of The Witch is a little different than Donovan's. The covers show how these bands influenced and were influenced by each other.
If you can't get enough authentic sixties Popsike, this set's for you.

Another rosey view through the window pane.......2007-07-17
I'm somewhat proud (and embarrassed :)) to have amassed almost 100 compilations on British beat/freakbeat/pop/sike/popsike, alone. These prized discs represent years of feckless and self-indulgent preoccupation (as it undoubtedly appears to the wife) in hunting down these imported hen's teeth which seem to go out of print as fast as they are released. So...to actually find something new that doesn't cover the same soggy, trodden ground and/or presents a fresh perspective with new tracks and artists is a rare and welcome discovery. This collection seems to do that very thing. Yes, it has a few familiar faces and some big names sprinkled in, but they are generally overlooked album cuts or b-sides that lend credence to the period and flow of ideas being passed around musically, like a joint. Not everyone who will buy this box set may be as sophisticated as some of us "chronically obsessive types", but they should enjoy this interesting assemblage on listen-ability alone. On the surface it is reminiscent (albeit much less obvious) of The British Nuggets II box and is divided onto four discs, "Sowing The Seeds", "Plant A Flower Today", Happydaystoytown" and Circus Days Are Here Again" which dance almost chronologically up through the years '65-'70. It comes with a nice glossy booklet that follows track for track, giving one some sense of history, the players and their trajectories. A worthy addition from one of the only big name labels, Castle/Sanctuary, who seem to think it important to continue to invest energy and pounds in this historical genre.

didn't work for rehearsals.......2007-03-22
I used this CD to help me rehearse for the BIG production I was in, but it didn't match the libretto at all. I think there was one song on there that I could use.
Big for folks doing the Musical.......2006-03-20
If you're getting this CD to help prepare for your school or community group doing the musical, there are a lot of changes from the CD to the book. Aside from finding the book in a new key and some chunks added/deleted, Here We Go Again and When You're Big aren't included anymore.
Overall, the music's a little trite, but there are some nice moments -- mostly the stuff sung by the female leads.
It's Awesome, It's Amazing, It's BIG!!!!.......2006-01-22
My high school did "Big" my sophomore year, and oh my god, it was such a fun musical to do. I kind of forgot about it until my senior year, when I suddenly craved some of that music again. So I purchased this CD and I've been loving it since. They got rid of a couple of the songs and replaced them with others as the show progressed on Broadway, so I was suprised to hear new material (to me anyways), and for the most part, I actually enjoyed these original songs over their replacements that my production contained. This cast is phenomenal and the guy who plays Josh Baskin sounds so much like Tom Hanks at points, its crazy. It's a simple, yet a bit fantastic musical about growing up, and it's funny and romantic, and a lot of fun. I love all the songs, and it's a shame it didn't do too well on B-way. At least this recording will keep the music alive.
"This Isn't Me" is one of my favorite tracks, as it's a lot of fun and has a great beat, but suprisingly it was replaced with "Good Morning to Mom", which was only so-so. "I Want To Go Home" is a great ballad that Josh sings, and its simple, a bit funny, and the ending is the best, as its cute and sad. Another song they got rid of, "Here We Go Again", is a song Susan sings, and again, I like it alot. It has a quirky melody that I like. "Stars, Stars, Stars" is another great song, and is quite cute. One of the more popular songs. "Cross The Line" is the finale to Act I and is also very excellent and up beat, and makes you want to dance. "Stop, Time" is my favorite song on the album by far. Sung by Josh's mom, it is one of the more poignant moments of the show. Heartfelt, sad, and truly beautiful, it defiantely makes you appreciate your mom. Barbara Walsh sounds superb on this: she has a great voice. I love this one. "Dancing all the Time" is another good Susan song, and it leads into "I Want To Know" by Young Josh, which is another good ballad. "Coffee, Black" is another showstopper, fun ensemble song, and again, very comedic. "One Special Man" is Susan's ballad to Josh, and it is very beatiful. My only regret is that its only 2:21 so its a short one, and I just want her to start belting at the end, but no, its a quiet ending. Still, I love this one too. The finale is great too, and features an amazing duet between Josh and Susan. I love the harmonies they do.
All in all, this is a great album. Sample the songs and give it a try. This is a must have!!
a lost gem.......2004-10-14
i saw this musical at the local high school in 2001 and was plesently suprised i of course saw the movie and the only thing i knew about this musical was it didnt stay long on broadway, so when i saw it was i shocked this is a delight cross the line still resenates in my head 5 years later.
Ungodly awful.......2004-06-19
BEWARE. This musical is perhaps one of the five worst pieces of music I have ever experienced. I began to wonder if the composer was attempting to make the world's worst musical. Listen for yourself and enjoy the disjunct vocal lines, the desperate attempt at "fun music", and - worst of all - how the highlight of the entire show both dramatically and musically is the insipidly awful "Heart and Soul". Stick to the movie because this baby is horrendous.

Album Description
Sophomore album by this New Zealand Alternative Pop/Rock trio of brothers, who have won numerous NZ and Australian music awards since the release of their debut album, Dreams. Although not as atmospheric as their debut, the songs here have much more depth to them. Warner. 2006.
Album Details
The Three Hume Brothers of Evermore have Come a Long Way Since the Release of their Debut Album Dreams. It's a Far Cry from their Humble and Rain-drenched Beginnings in Rural New Zealand, and it all Culminates in their New Album, Real Life. The Writing and Initial Recording of "Real Life" Took Place in the Isolation of their Central Coast Abode, an Isolation the Boys were Not Only Used To, but Actively Encouraged. Separating Into Different Rooms, They Each Had their Own Private Recording Studio in Miniature, Working on Tracks Solo Before Bringing them Together for the Evermore Polish. Respected Engineer John Alagia (Who Mixed Dreams, and Has Worked with Acts Like John Mayer, Dave Matthews Band and Ben Folds) was Chosen for the Job for his Twiddling Tenacity and his Striking Good Looks. But Perhaps the Main Difference Between the Two Albums is in the Songs Themselves.
Customer Reviews:
Exceptionally good band !!.......2007-02-17
Evermore is an exceptionally good band, and Real Life is their second studio album, released in July 2006. Comprising brothers Jon, Peter and Dann Hume, Evermore hails from New Zealand's North Island, and has been very successful in Australia and New Zealand. Their music deserves to reach a worldwide audience. All three brothers are songwriters, and though eldest brother Jon does most of the singing, it is possible to distinguish the three voices at work here.
Real Life opens with a powerful and positive title tune, which might be about waking up from one's Dreams and "stepping into the light" of one's adult Real Life. It segues into the hit single Running - an anthemic, confident rock song with a memorable chorus. This song received tons of airplay on Australian radio in 2006, making it one of the year's best known pop hits. Current single Light Surrounding You is a melodic winner that has gone even further up the chart and is sitting this week at #1 on the Australian singles chart. My favourite song on here is the fantastic The Great Unknown. The guitar sound on this track is reminiscent of U2, and, honestly , this is one of the best songs I heard in years, and I played this track heaps of times in August 2006 after buying my copy of the CD. Some slower songs like Afloat are balanced by loud , guitar based rock like Unbreakable and fine songs like My Guiding Light, and there are some melancholy moments too. Overall though, this album is catchier even than Evermore's 2004 debut CD Dreams, and a little more optimistic and "mainstream" in tone.
I saw Evermore in concert here in Hobart, Tasmania in September 2006, and can confirm that they are a great live act. The Hume brothers, whom I briefly met and talked to after the show, are talented and pleasingly down-to-earth about their music , and deserve a long and successful career. Definitely go and buy a copy of Real Life !!
Highly Recommended for rock and pop fans . 5 Stars from me
I guess "Real Life" is happier than their "Dreams".......2006-12-12
The sunny disposition of "Real Life" came as a bit of a shock the first listen through. The minor chords and deep moods from their previous album, "Dreams", has been replaced with optimistic harmony. I miss the emotional wailing that brought such honesty to their previous work. Their angst is mysteriously lacking through most of "Real Life" and only makes an appearance in latter tracks like "The Only One I See". While not as storytelling, "Real Life" does have memorable tracks and a much more polished pop sound. Evermore will forever remind me of The Verve... and that's a good thing.
From Dreams to Real Life.......2006-08-21
Evermore just keeps getting better with each album. I loved Dreams and have given it to friends and family for gifts. When Real Life came out I was again blown away. My favorite songs on the album are Running, My Guiding Light, The Only One I See, Unbreakable, Never Let You Go. Actually, I can't choose a favorite. They are all so wonderful. I would definately recommend this album and have already started giving it as gifts to family and friends. What better gift than to share the music you love.
