Subtitled - The Complete Calla, Port & Roulette Recordings. They are both fine soul singers from the mid 1960's and although this compilation was originally licensed from EMI and released by Westside Records in 1999, it is now back as a release through EMI's Stateside Label. The album is a real collector's disc due to the number of alternative takes included from both artists. Betty Lavette's contributions are 'Let Me Down Easy', 'Only Your Love Can Save me' & many others. Carol Fran's contributions are 'Crying In The Chapel', 'A World Without You', 'You Can't Stop Me', 'So Close' & many others. 2005.

Discover Jean Plum.......2007-05-07

I first heard Jean Plum sing "Look At The Boy" on Deep Soul Treasures vol.3 and loved the song and her voice so much that I really wanted a whole album of that voice. There didn't seem to be a whole album of her material available but this album has 13 tracks by her and is quite decent. None of the other tracks are as good as "Look At The Boy" and "Ma, He's Making Eyes At Me" is downright embarassing but her voice elevates all the material to another level. The last 9 tracks are by an even more obscure singer named Veniece who was lucky to even have a record deal at all. There is nothing interesting or distinctive about her voice or songs at all. This album is worth getting though, as it is the closest thing to a full length Jean Plum album. She was definatley one of the Soul greats who just never had that right, lucky break.

Don't miss Jean Plum.......2004-05-31

Jean Plum is not famous, and her work is relatively unavailable in the US. But if you like blues singers, especially female ones, do not miss the Jean Plum songs on this cd. She has one of the most haunting, beautiful voices I've ever heard. If you enjoy Linda Jones, old Aretha, Ella Fitzgerald and Etta James, this album has a place in your collection. It's the kind of cd you listen to over and over again for years and never get sick of.

Must have for blues fans.......2006-12-30

This is an amazing cd featuring the soulful stylings of betty lavette and carol fran. Both women are still alive and performing but their performances here are incredible. The songs are more soul than blues. You can really hear Etta James influence on both women. If you are an Etta James fan or an Ann Peebles fan, you will love this cd.

Forgotten duo remind us of pure soulful music of the 60s.......2006-01-29

I often hear Carol Fran sing in Lafayette, LA where she now lives. Though much older, I love to hear her sing with so much passion and pain, the true essense of a blues singer. When I found this CD I was floored. What an amazing soultress, along with Bettye LaVette. I never knew about her earlier work, and this CD is a must for anyone wanting to hear that old soul sound that we so desperately miss from music today. It is a heart breaker CD, but reminds us of the trials and tribulations that led these singers to perform from the heart and kept them on top of the charts.
