Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Late 70's O'Jays Best Album.......2007-08-01

Early 70's O'Jays Back Stabbers was great, then this late 70's was romantic and the beginning of the "For Lovers Only" format after the "9:00 p.m." hour. I remember me and my best friend laughing when we found out the song "Brandy" was about a dog!!! Still, this is one of my favorite albums by the O'Jays.

5 out of 5 stars COMPLETE;.......2007-02-08

The most complete album the O'JAYS did. Just about every song is classic. Man O Man, when I heard 'Cry Together" it set it all off for me. And I don't care if I don't understand the message of "Brandy', still love the song. So, O'JAYS, Take Me To The Stars, so I can Sing My Heart Out.

4 out of 5 stars Late-'70's disc is message-free.......2004-10-17

On "So Full of Love," the O'Jays stopped the "message" songs that characterized their previous Philadelphia International albums. David Nathan's liner notes quote the group's Eddie Levert as having said that people didn't want to hear messages anymore.

However unfortunate, that opinion follows the overused adjective for late-'70's music as "hedonistic" (I've read that word in music writing everywhere). It also worked, as "So Full of Love" became the O'Jays' highest-charting album ever, reaching #6 in the summer of '78 (not 1979 as shown on the back cover and booklet).

The eight tracks alternate between slow and fast. The latter include the disc's only big pop hit, the wonderful "Use Ta Be My Girl." A little doo-wop, a little disco, it's one of my favorite O'Jays songs. The version of "This Time Baby" here is very good, but doesn't quite reach the intoxicating disco heights Jackie Moore took it to the following year. For me, "Strokety Stroke" (what do you think this song is about?) is too tacky for a group of the O'Jays' stature, but other reviewers seem able to get past that and feel its considerable funk. "Take Me To the Stars" (the next lyric is "and let me be your space station") could only have happened at the peak of Earth, Wind, & Fire and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." I wonder what the kids of today's hip-hop-dominated R&B world would think of it.

All the slow ones are fine, with the standout being the R&B hit "Brandy." I can't tell if Brandy is a girlfriend, baby girl, or a pet. She was left on a doorstep in the rain, she's his best friend, he loves her, she ran away, he's a fraction of a man without her. But how would a grown woman get left on his doorstep? If it's a baby girl, there's nothing about how old she got when she ran away. Regrettably, I'm reminded of Henry Gross' miserable song "Shannon," also apparently about a missing dog, which made the top 10 a couple of years before this. That song really really upsets me. I'd appreciate anyone persuading me that this is not another lost-dog song. Anyway, for now, this remains one of pop's (lesser) unsolved mysteries.

Did this review run off the rails or what? I meant for it to be concise! Anyway, I recommend this record.

5 out of 5 stars Their Best Album.......2002-05-04

The O'Jays are slammin' with this track. The cuts of Use to be my girl, brandy, and this time baby are only a reflection of the entire album. Buy it!

4 out of 5 stars Good Solid Album.......2000-04-16

The O'Jays Are Living Legends&their Music is Timeless.TOgether with the Philly Sound they Give Up A Good Solid Disc here.Brandy is the cut as is Use Ta Be My Girl.it still sounds Good.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I can name that tune in three notes.......2005-02-19

My family likes to put this disc in on shuffle and play name that tune. I wish they made more discs like this, only with more obscure works.

5 out of 5 stars A Fabulous CD.......2004-10-14

The Idiot's Guide to Calssical Music is an awesome Cd for those people who want to have a tiny sample of all the great classical compositions. Track 61 and 63 are my favorite.

5 out of 5 stars Mega-Sampler! This really does have 99 tracks!.......2002-03-20

Yes, this CD really does have 99 tracks. How do they do it? Each is about a minuet long. Some are longer, some are shorter, but you get the micro-essential moments of the music.

If you like burning your own CDs, then this is a great source for intra-track fillers, along the lines of They Might Be Giants' "Apollo 18" album, which has all of those short tracks on the end. The idea is to put your CD player on shuffle, so the short tracks get mixed in with the bona fide songs. The result being a very unusual album.

The booklet gives an explanation of the track, where you heard it (i.e. the Warner Brother's Cartoons, or on famous films), and where you can get the full piece of music. So it's a mega sampler CD.

I can honestly say that this CD is a great gift for the friend who has everything.

5 out of 5 stars Fun Sampler.......2001-11-09

For the beginner. You will be surprised at how many of the 99 themes you recognize here. It is an easy introduction to classical music. Nice booklet too.

5 out of 5 stars Useful........1999-03-22

Take it for what it is, a clever and useful GUIDE to classical music. No, it is NOT an uncut rendition of Beethoven's 9th symphony. It IS a cd that will jog your memory. You have heard many of the tunes presented here, but not always knowing what the work was. This is your chance to catch up with all the great classical music you have been exposed to. Cheap too.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Two of their greatest LPs on one CD........2006-08-18

By the time of these two albums' release (1978 and'79) The O'Jays were R&B's most successful vocal group. "So Full Of Love" included the timeless masterpieces "Use Ta Be My Girl", "Brandy", "This Time Baby" and "Cry Together" while "Identify Yourself" spawned the gorgeous ballads "Forever Mine" and "Hurry Up and Come Back". Both albums became million-sellers and remain highlights of late-1970s R&B.

5 out of 5 stars Collector's dream.......2006-03-02

Two of the O'jays best on one CD. These songs will stand the test of time. I can not tell you how many times I have played this CD. Too numerous to count. One of the best R&B groups of the 70's and 80's and still around doing their thing. O'jays forever.

5 out of 5 stars Too cool for some.......2005-02-22

Julianne Baird is breathtakingly good at what she does: intelligent, stylistically convincing, technically brilliant ornamentation, in a sweet, phenomenally accurate voice. I love it. Those not accustomed to this sort of thing, though, may find it lacking emotional immediacy. Consider also Kathleen Battle with some of the same material: not that she's better, but the appeal is more directly sensual rather than intellectual.

5 out of 5 stars Ethereal and Hauntingly Beautiful.......2003-11-05

How could you go wrong with the clear seraph voice of Julianne Baird accompanied by the delicate skill of Ronn McFarlane on the Lute. Not only is the talent exceptional but the composed works of Lute music divine.

You listen to each song and are carried away to time/place devoid of any worry let alone any task other than to listen to Julianne and Ronn execute perfection. You truely feel part of the Elizabethan Court listening to this CD it is both beautiful and dark simutaneously.

Another fabulous feature to this CD is the simplicity of the recording of only lute and vocals with no special effects. To retain the warmth and purity of the composition it was recorded on location in 'The Troy Savings Bank Music Hall' in Upstate New York and is one of the finest acoustical settings in the world. Unlike modern pop music Lute music as written needs no manipulation or adjustment in the studio if executed by skilled artists and musicians in an acoustical atmosphere and this recording does exactly that.

I highly recommend this CD of beautiful music. It truely will evoke deep feeling and emotion.

This is the way ,I think, Purcell should sound. No pomp and surcomstance but only great music.

5 out of 5 stars ALL THE MUSIC YOU EVER NEED!!.......2003-05-23

This boxed set is by far one of the best purchases I have ever made. As a Purcell freak, this hits every button I have. The cast of characters include the inequitable Robert King, New College Choir, Bowman, and a host of other venerable persons. Likewise the attention to period performance of these works makes it an essential addition to the library of any serious anglophile/Musicologist etc. Now if only the Britten Realizations of all Purcell's songs could be recorded alongside the originals! You will Love this set!

    Album Description

John Langstaff, now 83 years of age, is the founder and director emeritus of Revels, the non-profit performing arts company that produces Revels Records as well as 'The Christmas Revels' annual winter solstice celebrations in 12 cities across the country. This is the complete collection of Langstaff's disc, featuring all four acclaimed previously re-released CDs originally recorded in England. The recordings have been digitally re-mastered at London's famed Abbey Road Studios. Included are many traditional British and American folk songs and ballads, most with simple, art song settings. Legendary pianists Sir Gerald Moore, Sam Mason and John Powell, as well as guitarist Martin Best, are featured.

Dennis O'Neill is a wonderfully sensitive, intelligent singer--a tenor who varies his tone and delivery for each character. He also sings the music as written, with every dynamic shading in place. Yes, he manages high B-flats pianissimo without resorting to falsetto, and he also rises somewhat heroically to heavier moments. But there's a rub. The loud, high notes are a bit nasty--a slight wobble comes into the voice and a sense of strain is more than noticeable. His exquisite, piano beginning of "O paradiso" ("Oh land of dreams") from L'Africaine is only a sad memory when you hear the vaguely bawled high notes throughout. His "Reve" from Manon is lovely in its sustained peacefulness, and while he's very exciting in the big Act II duet from Ballo (with soprano Susan Bullock as a fine Amelia), there are always those unfortunate "big" notes to reckon with. Perhaps that's why the gorgeous Pearl Fishers duet, with baritone Anthony Michaels-Moore, ends the program so successfully. The soft notes are more prominent than the troublesome forte ones. Perhaps this is being too picky--O'Neill is a worthy singer, he makes these arias and scenes palatable in translation (even Alvaro's music from Forza is believable), and artistry like this is a pleasure to come across. --Robert Levine

2 out of 5 stars Not representative Teyte.......2005-08-29

Maggie Teyte is known, for the most part, for her French Art Song recordings. This Decca 'Singers' edition, while entertaining, is not representative of her best, or indeed, her most iconic work. For that, you'll need to turn to her EMI recordings. All that said, these recordings show her in marvellous voice, and a couple of the performances, the Hahn and the Dvorak 'Songs my mother taught me' are very special.

3 out of 5 stars Joy and melancholy.......2002-02-07

I wonder how many English singers, born as long ago as 1888, have been resurrected on CD in the year 2001. Dame Maggie Teyte can claim two CDs! This one forms part of the series "The Singers". All the recordings on this CD date from the 1930s. That those years were "lean years" for British singers, is also to Maggie Teyte's credit. Beggars cannot be choosers, of course, and what is here is not necessarily always her best work. The first three tracks show her at her best; elsewhere there are some quaint and queer items. In "Sweet Mistress Prue" you will hear "the sky is blue" and "how I love you" and every possible rhyming line ad nauseum. Eleven of the tracks derive from 1937 broadcasts she gave with the accompanist Rita Mackay. One of them is issued here for the first time, replacing another - a song by Hugo Wolf - that was included in a first issue of this collection on LP in the 1970s.

The singer puts her stamp on everything, conveying a sense of joy mixed with a tinge of wistful melancholy. Her admirers will welcome this CD with joy. That her voice never recorded well, and that these recordings were never the best of their day, might induce a slight feeling of melancholy.
