Product Description

A landmark recording in the history of Double Bass playing, The London Double Bass Sound combines the talents of Gary Karr, arranger Daryl Runswick, and a core ensemble of London's leading Double Bass players-Paul Kimber, Richard Lewis, Roger Linley, Tom Martin, Kevin Rundell, Mary Scully, Steven Williams and Stacy Watton. All eight currently fill, or have recently occupied, the principal or co-principal chairs in London's leading orchestras.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed this cd.......2004-03-19

Being a bass player myself I really enjoyed this cd becuase of the variety of music featured on it! I hope other people can enjoy it and appriciate it as well!

4 out of 5 stars For Doublebass players.......2000-04-30

Nice arrangements, wonderful sound, a wide variety of songs but I wanted to listen more to Gary Karr. The interpretation of Moses Fantasy is better that the one played with the RSO Berlin Orchestra. If you are a DoubleBass player, this is a must. If you aren't, you'll hear what a doublebass can do and how sensitive it could be. I couldn't stop laughing when I heard for the first time the "sarcastic" version of Wannabe. This album is like a Raritie. If your're really looking for a serius album to know better the doublebass, this is not the first one that I'll chose. But it's really fun!

3 out of 5 stars London Double Bass Sound.......2000-04-27

This CD is certainly an interesting concept, however musically speaking it doesn't quite hit the mark that it intended. Fans of Gary Karr should certainly consider buying this CD because his performances are inspiring and the ensemble does a nice job of accompanying, however the selection of repetoire does not always help the bassists' fight for serious recognition. "The Elephant" sounds grotesque enough with only one bass playing it, but here there are four basses on the solo line. The jazz tunes are nice, but lack a certain excitement and the inclusion of the Spice Girls' "Wannabe", as humorous as it may have intended to be, may set the double bass back a few steps in the eyes of the general, non bass playing public.

5 out of 5 stars A Slice of History!.......2003-11-15

This is a fantastic CD! I wish I knew more about the details of these recordings, because I suspect that some of them have been gathered from unusual sources. Because of the sound quality, I wouldn't be surprised to find that Cole Porter's own rendition of Cest Magnifique was recorded at a party or other informal occasion. It has that kind of intimate feeling.

At any rate, don't be put off by the fact that some of the recordings don't have the polished, studio sound of modern recordings. It is absolutely incredible hearing these Cole Porter hits being done by such varied artists as Mel Torme, Bobby Short, Rosemary Clooney, Jo Stafford, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, and Marian McPartland (the wonderful jazz pianist).

You can't help but feel that you are experiencing history when you listen to this CD. I only wish that I had realized that all three volumes were available as a boxed set. Must buy that next! (ASIN: B00001T3IP).

                Customer Reviews:

                1 out of 5 stars A VERY GENERIC SOUND.......2006-03-16

This artist has a very generic, almost created sound, Its a little too obvious that her record company pigeonholed her into a "Mariah" Wannabe. I think its funny because if you read the reviews that are favorable toawrds this performer, they all seem to have the exact same wording (PERHAPS SAMANTHA IS WRITING REVIEWS ON HERSELF!!!!) It seems that way or perhaps a family member because honestly, from what I have heard of her "music", she wouldn't get past the first round in American Idol. I hear she's big in Germany, but then again, so is David Hasselhoff (Sp?). It's obvious that this woman is doing something to boost her career but it certainly isn't singing. Have you seen the website? It looks like a porn star's site. I really find the review stating that they prefer Samantha Cole over "The Screaming Mariah Carey" (which I'm sure is Samantha or a family member) hysterical. MARIAH CAREY HAS BROKEN RECORDS ACROSS THE BOARD AND HAD MORE #1 HITS THAN ANY FEMALE EVER, SHE CAN SING ANY RANGE OF MUSIC, SHE WRITES HER OWN MUSIC AND ALTHOUGH SHE'S A LITTLE FRUITY AT TIMES, SHE IS THE MOST TALENTED FEMALE ARTIST OF OUR TIME. SOMEONE NEEDS TO CLEAN OUT THEIR EARS!

2 out of 5 stars decent, but not distinct..........2004-01-20

Samantha Cole's first (and as yet last) album was one of those countless albums specially engineered for the mainstream, but never had much to show for it.. eventually falling flat in the charts and banished to the annals of mainstream mediocrity. One only needs to look at the seven producers on board including super-producers Nile Rodgers and David Foster, Diane Warren, Jon-John (who had worked with Diana Ross around this time), Richard Marx, Carl Sturken, Evan Rogers and Jimmy Harry (whew!)... Unfortunately, despite (or because of) all the producers on board, many of the songs end up sounding fairly generic and anonymous (even for MOR standards). Case in point: yet another pointless cover of "You Light Up My Life"..yuck.

In addition, much of the songs sound astonishingly dated when compared to other records released around this time, especially some of the more uptempo R&B numbers (esp. "Sweet Sweet Surrender"..which is quite painful, really). Some of the best tracks include the first single "Without You", the Richard Marx duet "Surrender To Me" and "I'm Right Here" all of which are produced by David Foster and/or Richard Marx. Although fairly typical in it's David Foster MOR schlock value, at least it's well-crafted and well performed MOR schlock, and easily the best of this bunch... Nile Rodgers, one of my favorite producers, contributes a couple of the more uptempo numbers, but still doesn't seem to live up to his usual standard on this record.. "What You Do To Me" comes close, but not quite. Although Cole has a fine voice, the early Whitney/Mariah AC/MOR approach on this album fails. Cole may have the vocal ability, but hardly the vocal presence of either, nor the distinctive material to get noticed.. good luck to her on a follow-up, if it's ever to come..

1 out of 5 stars samantha cole blows.......2003-01-23

i have always been curious about why i see samantha cole's name/picture in magazines, gossip pages, etc.- so i decided to check out her music. good lord, she is horrible. who in their right mind gave this girl a record deal?? she seriously has zero talent. her music is so cheesy and she has no voice. i would give her zero stars if i could.

                1 out of 5 stars Quite disappointed.......2002-03-02

The songs on the cd are not memorable. She has very weak and poor singing skills. (You can hear some out of tune notes and cracking.) I was hoping for some expressive music (like Mariah Carey) but found dull music and not very much talent. Please don't buy this album, it's really not worth your money. I wish I hadn't listen to her album, I was quite disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars the best of the best.......2001-12-03

samantha cole is an amazing singer.
she has an amazing voice and i love her style.
not only talent but also a great personality.
