Customer Reviews:
Disappointed.......2007-07-29
As everyone knows (or should know), Chuck Brown is the Godfather of go-go. But unlike "I Need Money" and "Bustin' Loose", this CD seems too slick and overproduced. It's more like a tribute than something with an edge. P.S. Anyone in search of more go-go should check out the Liaison Records catalog.
Wind Me Up, Chuck!.......2007-07-16
Chuck Brown is a Washington, DC institution and our "National Treasure!" This man started "Go-Go!" He is 70+ years old and still manages to stay current with what is happening on the music scene today. For those who don't know what "Go-Go" is, it is a genre of music (a sort of sub-genre of funk music) that originated in Washington, DC. Although there were several bands that contributed to the evolution of Go-Go, Chuck Brown developed most of the characteristics or hallmarks of the style. The song "Bustin' Loose"(1978)...that was Chuck! The song reached #1 on the Billboard Charts in February/March 1979. Several mainstream artists have sampled Go-Go songs or used Go-Go beats (Salt 'N Pepa - "My Mic Sounds Nice", L.L. Cool J - "Rock the Bells", Grace Jones - "Slave to the Rhythm." Go-Go Band EU (Experience Unlimited) received international exposure when they were featured in Spike Lee's movie "School Daze" performing their song [...].
My husband and I were having lunch at Ben's Chili Bowl today and "Chuck Baby" started playing on the jukebox. Everyone in the place was bobbing their heads! People were still singing the song long after it had ended! I left Ben's and went straight to store to buy this CD! As we say in DC, "This joint is CRANKIN'!" This is the serious party/driving CD. It was produced by Carl "Chucky" Thompson who has produced for artists such as Mary J. Blige, Biggie, NAS, Faith Evans, etc. If you are not familiar with Chuck Brown's music, this would be a wonderful introduction for you. The CD, like Chuck's live concerts, will not disappoint. My favorites are "Chuck Baby" (Chuck's daughter KK has a really nice flow on this one), "Theme from 'The Godfather'", and "Block Party." Maryland native and most-able crooner, Raheem DeVaughn makes an appearance on the song "Eye Candy." We (the DC Metro area) pledge our allegiance to Chuck Brown! He rocks!
Very good........2007-06-29
This is a very good CD. I recommend it to all. The Godfather piece is extremely smooth.

GoGo needs to go!.......2007-07-24
First off, what the hell is gogo? and who the blue hell is chuck brown? America wants to know. I heard this gogo on the radio and thought vinilla ice made a comeback. I thought the dj couldn't spin the record stright. Who is chuck brown signed to? classical music sells more than gogo. I enven heard gogo been out for 30 years! chuck still lives with his mama! he sells his cassette tapes out the trunk. Overall, gogo just sucks! America also thinks this. Sucks, just like the wizards, the nationals, and the hockey team, if D.C. has one. D.C. isn't even a state. Just stop, please. America has been embarrased enough.
Bustin Loose.......2007-04-25
I don't want to buy this cd unless I know for a fact that it includes the full length version of Bustin Loose, and not the radio version that practically cuts it in half?
Can anybosy tell me if it does or it doesn't?

Long overdue retrospective of a true legend ! ! ! .......2006-08-23
People in the Maryland/DC area, and those around the world lucky enough to get into the area's "best kept secret" have long known who and what Chuck Brown is... and his influence on not only an entire genre of music, but countless other artists who've followed in his footsteps - - knowingly and unknowingly. And now, finally a retrospective that covers his entire career, from his ultra funky "Kool and The Gang"ish disco/hard core funk roots in the mid-70s (when as far as the rest of the world is concerned he had his "one hit wonder" Bustin' Loose even though the best was yet to come) - - all the way up to current times, where as "The Godfather of Go Go" he comfortably holds court, guitar in hand - - and even rappin' and out rappin' fans and follows barely a third of his age - - often backed by the P-Funk horns, and a who's who of Jazz, funk, go go players... the truth is Chuck Brown is a style, genre and persona all unto himself - - "good people" yet "wickedly funky"...
Though DC's go go music (which Chuck Brown created) never caught on like it should have, the truth is that if you listen to this CD and don't come out convinced that Chuck Brown epitomized the words "legend", "style" and "funkyness" -- you ain't nothing...
As an added bonus, to fans of Chuck's more "musical elements", this CD is proabably his most consistantly engineered and best packaged representation to date... you really get to hear his various bands over the years work out, and have to be amazed how he's always at the helm gushing with his distinct trademarks - - the non-stop beats, those slick and funky guitar lines, the ever popping bass and congas and his funky emcee-ing and stage bands that are always funner than fun and tighter than tight.
Though Chuck can and does travel the year, it is true that he's under-appreciated... and its ashame because I truly believe that if everyone in the world knew more about him music worldwide would be 100 times as good !
The Best of Chuck Brown Review.......2006-08-21
I am a Chuck Brown Fan and have been one for years. I was not happy with the older songs that were included on thi sparticular album. I thought that there could have been other songs, from other venues, that could have been included on this particular CD. I still enjoy his music and am happy with the purchase.

With The Raw & the Cooked, the Fine Young Cannibals broke into the mainstream with their particular soul-injected sound. They were seemingly infatuated with late-'50s and early-'60s Motown, and the musical influences on this album range from boogie ("Good Thing," on which Squeeze keyboardist Jools Holland goes to town with a foot-stompin' piano solo) to poodle-skirted slow dance ("As Hard As It Is," "Tell Me What"), then stretch as far as Prince-like funk ("Don't Let It Get You Down"). Possessing one of the most unusual voices in all of pop music, lead singer Roland Gift gives this album its distinction and the Fine Young Cannibals their identity. About half the songs (including the hit "She Drives Me Crazy") are graced with Gift's steady, crystal-clear falsetto, but it's his swollen-throated lower register, where he sounds like he is singing through a trumpeter's plunger mute, that really makes his voice unmistakable. --Beth Bessmer
Customer Reviews:
I keep my old CDs so I can remember this stuff.......2007-02-09
The CD liner notes have an interesting series of symbols following the names of each song, then a symbol that looks like a car for all tracks. After a page with a picture, there are four pages of names and symbols. Then there are two pages of pictures, followed by three pages explaining what each symbol represents. The first one I figured out was that Jools Holland plays a piano solo. The other symbol after his name indicates that the piano solo is for the song `Good Thing.' Now I can watch the CONCERT FOR GEORGE DVD again and figure that the guy playing piano for the song `Horse to the Water' is Jools, so the person singing must be Sam Brown. When there are so many people on stage at the same time, it can take me years to figure out where I have heard any of these people before. Roland Gift does the singing on all tracks for `The Raw & The Cooked' CD from Fine Young Cannibals. David Steele and Roland Gift wrote most of the songs, except the final song, `Ever Fallen in Love' by Peter Shelley, and `It's OK (It's Alright)' by David Steele-Roland Gift-Andrew Cox.
The symbol for `She Drives Me Crazy' might be a man hitting himself in the head with a book. "Everything I do is wrong" summarizes the obsessed man who can't help himself. The same symbol follows the name of David Z after four other symbols. He gets a credit for co-production and engineer for a total of three songs. Steele/Cox/Gift get credit for production on seven other songs, but the symbols are not in the same order as the list of the ten songs on the album. Gavin Wright gets credit for strings and Dave Anderson for remix on `As Hard as it Is.' Music is a complicated business for groups that get to be this good, and somebody has to keep track of who does what. I probably never noticed before. If I didn't have my own computer now, I might not even be interested in what an icon is for. Live and learn.

Fine Young Cannibals, a.k.a. the two-hit wonders of 1988.......2003-07-18
The minor complaints would be that "The Raw & the cooked" has only ten songs and about 35 minutes worth of music. The bigger complain would be that the Fine Young Cannibals never put out another album as good as this 1988 effort which had its first two tracks, "She Drives Me Crazy" and "Good Thing," hit #1 on the Billboard Pop chart. FYC consisted of sing Roland Gift with a pair of former Beat members, guitarist Andy Cox and David Steele on keyboards/bass. Pegging the songs on this album into even a couple of niches is difficult because you will hear bits of everything from Motown and R&B from the past to punk and disco from the "present" in these ten songs, all fused together in a distinctive and enjoyable sound. Credit must be given to producer David Z, who had worked with Prince, Billy Idol, and others out of Minneapolis. Most of the songs were released as singles in the U.K.
Besides the first two cuts, the torch song "I'm Not the Man I Used to Be" keeps the party going on this album. But the most memorable track remains "She Drives Me Crazy," which has one of the most instantly identifiable openings of the decade and which was used to great effect in an episode of "thirtysomething" when Elliott fantasizes about what Nancy is doing after their divorce. I understand that the snare drum bit from that song is one of the most frequently sampled sounds in music history. Makes sense to me.
"The Raw & the Cooked" sold over 2 million copies and made it to the top of the album charts as well. When people talk about one hit wonders they are talking about artists where you want to have their big song but not their album. That is most certainly not the case with the Fine Young Cannibals. The only reason not to pick up this album would be because you also like some of FYC's earlier work (they only put out two albums) and you end up going with their hits collection "Finest," which has the six singles from this album.
Eat It Up!.......2002-02-28
One of the most talented groups of the eighties, FYC made only a few albums. This 1988 effort is a must, with highly original compositions similar in feeling to the great Arthur Lee and Love. Almost every song is great (although the first half is better), both for listening or dancing, particularly "She Drives Me Crazy," "Good Thing," "I'm Not the Man I Used to Be," and "Tell Me What." The emotional vocals, tight playing, and R&B/reggae beat make these completely infectious. Roland Gift has the restrained vocal passion of a Sam Cooke. Andy Cox's plucking guitar notes, superbly comped by David Steele on keyboards and some great percussive sounds, adds a unique sound to Gift's emotional vocal on "I'm Not the Man I Used To Be." On the best songs, the production is richly textured yet sparse (e.g. Al Green). For example, Steele adds some keyboard accents on "I'm Not Satisfied" then pulls off a cooking organ solo. The song, like much of the album, is imbued with R & B, reggae, funky church sounds, and James Brown passion.
"Tell Me Why" is a more mellow ska, with some nice 50's style harmonies. Track 6, "Don't Look Back," somewhat misses... it lacks the soulful hooks of the other songs but has an early 60's vocal sound and breaks into a good power guitar solo for about 10 seconds at the 2-minute mark). Overall, it's strangely likeable, as if Arthur Lee did country/Western.
"It's OK (It's Alright)" breaks into a great chorus despite it's somewhat cloying disco groove. Still, the tight work and rhythm section are impeccable and elevate the song...and again, this is great dance music! "Don't Let It Get You Down" has some annoying sound-effects over a great Prince-like falsetto by Gift. There's also a fine trumpet sound that gets into a good groove. Track 9 has a deep churchy sound (due largely to the organ), a great guitar twangling hook. Like many of their songs, it has the deep feeling of a prayer, and the yearning emotion of the best Rhythm and blues. Excellent vocals, but, towards the end of the song the overly dramatic horns and the singing veer towards self-parody (but I can imagine Elvis doing something fun with this). The last song has more strumming guitar and a big drum sound on the beat: It's a little like Talking Heads in its approach and sound, and has a taste of funk guitar.
The album fades just a bit after it's initial blast, but this is not enough to dampen my enthusiasm. Not many groups can match FYC for musical and emotional power, originality, and synthesis of R &B and reggae. It's probably one of the top 25 albums of the 1980's. Very highly recommended!
I love them........2002-01-26
Their music is so good. I have so many memories of them from my childhood. I used to love the video "She Drives Me Crazy" every time it came on MTV in the late 80's/early 90's. I remember VH1 used to play "She Drives Me Crazy" and "Good Thing" for years. They wouldn't let up and I loved that. This music is so nostaglic for me. They don't make it like this anymore. I'm so glad they put these songs out!

More about this little known album.......2006-11-17
This is one of the best Funk compilations in the market today.Yet we ain't talkin' 'bout classic funk here...hell no! These tracks are all performed by a group called "The Poets Of Rhythm", a tight-old school style funk band from E Germany...you read that right.Their signature sound is to make modern sounds that make you feel like u listenin' to some 45 outta the 60's when infact these were composed in the late 90's
The bands appear under different names here as they had several performers in and out of the band during these recordings.
To get a more comprehensive feel of their music try looking for the titles "Original Raw Soul" and "More Original raw Soul" both available here. These have more tracks from the bands featured here as well as some history behind each recording for example Bag Of Soul was originally performed as Santa'a gotta Bag Of Soul and was origially written as a christmas gift. But if those 2 albums are outta stock then definately grab this album....after listenin' to the samples I ain't gotta tell you why...
Good but lacking.......2006-05-27
I enjoy the sound on this album, it definitely lives up to its name of raw funk, but I was disappointed with how short the cd was. 40 minutes of music barely fills up half a disc, and I'm sure there's other obscure b-side jams that could have been added. Plus the liner notes were virtually non-existent. It would've been cool to learn a little more about the album and the bands that are on it. But all things equal, it's still funky.
Great stuff.......2005-02-19
If you aren't moving to the first track, you aren't breathing. A great blast of pure funk.
Exquisite. Raw Funk at its best to lift up your spirit........2000-11-15
This is one of the best CDs on the Funk, Jazz Funk and Raw Funk market that I have ever heard. Total exquisite, spicy and groovy, a perfect blend for a depressed spirit. Buy this Cd and you will not be disappointed, it will be a passage to a funky and groovy Paradise.

Defiant, sexy, playful, nervy, womanly, and wise, 1988's Raw Like Sushi was the opening salvo in Neneh Cherry's brilliant, if woefully underappreciated, career. The hit "Buffalo Stance," with its reworking of Malcolm McLaren's Buffalo Gals vibe, found Cherry erroneously labeled as a rap artist. True enough, there are hip-hop elements on Raw Like Sushi, as well as pop, electronic, R&B, and dance, all gleefully mixed up in a progressive melange of beats, cultures, emotions, and grooves. Besides being fierce, funky, and one of the best debuts in memory, Raw Like Sushi helped redefine what women could do in the rigid realm of late-'80s African American music, and it sounds as good today as it did the day it was released. --Amy Linden
Customer Reviews:
Nothing on Raw Like Sushi matches "Buffalo Stance".......2004-12-20
I just recently heard "Buffalo Stance" on my local college radio station, and it brought back memories of the first time I heard it in back in the winter of 1989. It isn't difficult to see why this song was so popular back then; it had all the infectious grooves an excellent pop song should have. But there's a problem with the overall album of Raw Like Sushi: all the songs that surround "Buffalo Stance" don't even come close to matching its catchiness. Even the inexplicably praised "Manchild" is dull.
Find the single for "Buffalo Stance" if you can, and pick up a Salt & Pepper album as an alternative to Raw Like Sushi.
The original "spice girl"........2004-04-28
This debut of hers may not be as impressive now, but in 1988 it was ahead of its time, and great on many levels. "Raw Like Sushi" also covers as many genres as it does topics. I still have the cassingle of "Buffalo Stance", and that song remains the best thing on here. However "Manchild" and "Kisses On The Wind" are catchy too. In fact, the album starts out very strong, then becomes too similar in the second half. But overall it's a good listen from this "Inna City Momma".
Setting the template for female Urban Rap-Commentary...........2003-11-03
Considered one of the finest female talents to emerge from the U.K (with as much social awareness as today's Ms Dynamite),Neneh was a urban role model of sorts, during the late 80's and her rhetoric was one of social Urban issues, which confronted both men & women by imploring, men to respect women & take responsibility for their sexual actions (and any offspring as a result of their sexual encounters), and for women, to recognise their importance within their community & not remain gullible personalities for men to take advantage of. A suitably tough stance of all issues granted a generation of disaffected listeners, (although the music was so dance orientated, that It was easy to forget the underlining message), and so having influenced many with her commendable insight, it fall's to Ms Dynamite to continue what Neneh first started.
This is TERRIBLE... I'll be buying a copy immediately.......2003-10-31
Manchild alone is worth the price of the CD. Her music is absolutely awful and brings a tear of joy to my eye. Good luck
One of my favorite albums.......2003-06-13
RAW LIKE SUSHI is the early 1990's debut album of English singer/rapper Neneh Cherry (incidentally, Neneh is the step-daughter of Jazz artist Don Cherry, and the sister of Eagle-Eye Cherry who found success recently with the hit single "Save Tonight"). She was a mix between Queen Latifah and Madonna, and her hit single "Buffalo Stance" (a song about hussling) had become a major international radio hit. It was certainly ahead of its time because it incorporated what today is almost formula: a rap verse with a singing chorus. What is remarkable is that Neneh Cherry performed both functions. Most songs that follow this formula are collaborations, assigning one talent to each genre.
Buffalo Stance is without a doubt the best song on RAW LIKE SUSHI, but there are many other gems as well. Kisses on the Wind is a fun song about the girl in the neighborhood who matured faster than everyone else, "the first girl to turn the boys on." Inner City Momma, Love Ghetto, and Phoney Ladies, are also great songs.
This was an incredibly promising debut that seemed to hint at a future superstar. I'm not sure what went wrong. What has happened to Neneh Cherry? Why isn't she still on the radio? I don't know. But I *do* know that RAW LIKE SUSHI is a great CD that anyone who likes strong women will enjoy.

Perhaps no musician more defines a city and a sound than Chuck Brown does Washington, D.C. and go-go. At the age of 67, the godfather of go-go has entertained three generations and still plays to thousands of fans at least three times a week in the D.C./Maryland/Virginia triangle. Go-go is the same age as hip-hop, and shares all of its urban bombast, but it's a live-band thing, and a community thing too. When disco DJs threatened to displace cabaret bands in the '70s, Chuck invented the kinetic, syncopated go-go backbeat and put together continuous funkified sets of originals and covers linked by generous crowd shout-outs and sizzling percussive breakdowns. This recent set, featuring appearances by Trouble Funk and Rare Essence luminaries, has it all: Chuck's exquisite baritone, brilliant musicianship, go-gofied hip-hop, blues and jazz, and breakbeats you can fit a trailer into. If you don't know anything about go-go or Chuck, Your Game...Live At The 9:30 Club might the best introduction you're ever likely to hear. It's definitely one of the best records of 2001. Special bonus: the multimedia enhancements include two videos that put you right in the middle of all the go-go action. --Jeff Chang

THE REAL GO GO MICKEY.......2003-11-11
THIS IS THE REAL LIVE GROOVE OF GO GO MUSIC. CHUCK BROWN WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN. THE BASS IN HIS VOICE TELLS THE AUDIENCES THAT THIS IS THE CAREER HE HAS BEEN WAITING FOR. THE INSTRUMENTS USED FOR GO GO MUSIC IS OUTSTANDING. I AM A FORMER RESIDENT OF D.C. I AM NOW LIVING IN SUFFOLK, VA, WHICH TO ME IS BAMMA. ANYWAY, CHUCK BROWN, IS THE ONE TRUE GO GO MICKEY. HE IS THE ORIGINGAL GODFATHER OF GO GO. PEACE OUT.
Not my game exactly, but I can't stop playing it.......2003-03-16
Go-go is D.C.'s indigenous funk, but I'll freely admit that I'm way less familiar with it than I really should be. This realization came upon me with astonishing force upon listening to this record, which is unlike anything else I've ever heard except Chuck's actual live show, which I had to check out after hearing this CD.
The audience for this live show seems to be specially selected people who know every rite of the go-go show and who appreciate the cameos from Jas, Funk, Benny, Andre "Whiteboy" Johnson (some irony there), and other special guest artists from old school go-go luminaries such as Trouble Funk. I hope one day to be well-enough versed in go-go to savor such moments.
Coming to this CD from classical and hip-hop, though, there are priceless moments enough. A horn riff with (electronic piano doubling as) harpsichord under it in the opening "Wind Me Up, Chuck" sounds freaking exactly like the opening ritornello in Bach's second Brandenburg Concerto, but about five million times funkier. Herbie Hancock's "Chameleon" gets a conga-driven workout and some ultrasmooth Chuckster lyrics. "2001 (That'll Work)" again takes a classical work, in this case "Dawn" from Richard Strauss's Also sprach Zarathustra, and funkafies it mercilessly into the go-go strut, producing extra-special glee for anyone who likes historical irony and remembers Strauss's vile late-life racism. "No Diggity," the one hit in the wonder that was Blackstreet, and the Kool Moe Dee classic "Do You Know What Time It Is?" both get slamming covers towards the close of the album, showing that Chuck and his band can cover all the R&B bases they choose to.
But mostly this record is about bold, jazzy brass playing, guitar riffs powerful enough to shake mountains, Chuck's magesterial presence, and the go-go beat powering it all. It's really a wonderful thing, and the only reason I don't play this record more than I do is that I'm worried about becoming inured to its glories.
The fact that the first of like five shout-outs to Silver Spring occurs at 4:26 into the record is purely incidental to my enjoyment of it, by the way.
Wind me up Chuck...............2001-12-11
Chuck Brown brings Go-Go home where it belongs.....Go-Go is live, Audience-interaction, Conga-smacking, Backbeat-Drumming......if you are ever in DC.....Check out Chuck Brown.....this cd is hot
Mr. Brown is a baa-aad man!.......2001-12-01
Is it possible for a CD to have one beat throughout its entire length, and still be as good to your head as to your booty? If Chuck Brown and the Soul Searchers are layin the groove down the answer is yes. Mr. Brown invented one beat--the go go beat--and he's stuck to it, but what he does on top of that beat is what keeps your attention. His guitar, the bass, keys, and especially the horns are all over the place in the jazziest sense of the word. Brown is a master, classy MC for the party. I have several other live discs by CB and this may be the best. Recommended highly for anyone who likes their music loose and funky.

"Raw & Remix" is very cool.......2005-11-30
I remember when FYC were big back in the day. These remix dance versions of their most popular tunes is pretty good. Most of the songs will get you moving one way or the other. I am not sure what the other id*iot on this review board was talking about. If you liked FYC, you won't be dissapointed in buying this CD.
Piece!
Finest of FYC.......2005-05-18
This was the first FYC CD I purchased. I got it as one of my last choices on a "Buy one CD get 12 Free (and buy 3 more CDs in the next 3 years BTW: we will charge you an arm and a leg for each on those full priced CDs )", Based on hearing "She drives me crazy". Never in a million years would I have guessed I would love this CD so much. If you like to hear songs you like made even better, I would definately recommend this. Other CDs of this nature that are must haves, The Cure: Mixed Up - Depeche Mode's box sets 1-6
One Song does NOT an album make!.......2002-06-24
Yeah, this was purchased only on the strength of "She Drives Me Crazy!"
I musta been crazy!
I'll be kind and give it "2 stars" for that song alone!

Debut of a Future Star.......2004-06-29
RAW (1989) is Alyson Williams first complete studio album as a solo artist. After recording with Melba Moore, Bobby Brown, Oran Juice Jones and being in such groups as Orange Crush and Unlimited Touch (with Melissa Morgan) she has finally come into her own. Being the first R&B female solo artist to record with Russell Simmons, she has proven her right to being the first lady of DEF JAM. I have had the opportunity to know Alyson (Ally Cat) during the recording of this installment and I must say she put every bit of her soul in each song.
With the CD opening, "Just call my name" along with "I looked into your eyes" and "Not on the outside", Alyson captures the classic R&B style that music listeners have been longing for. Surprisingly, Alyson pulls off the gospel edge of "I'm so glad" because she does come from a jazz background. The CD changes its format and style with "My love is raw", "On the rocks", "I need your lovin" and the Hip-Hop/Dance track "Sleep Talk" what strategy!!!! Not only does the CD provides a "Quiet Storm" format (that was suppose to be the original title of the CD but changed at the last minute)but it goes right into a genre of music that is still popular today!
I must say this is very fine work from a lady who has paid her dues since 1980 and I am proud to say she "showed up" like a Diva should.
Job well done!!!!
Buy it, you definitely will not regret the investment!!!!!
The way it should be done.......2003-10-11
ALYSON WILLIAM'S debut album "RAW" was one of the best r&b albums the year it was released (1989). She had a wonderful vocal style that took you back to the 70's, but the style was kept current when blended with some hip-hop as she was on DEF JAM RECORDS. With background harmonies by the likes of BLUE MAGIC, JOCEYLN BROWN, LISA FISCHER, PHILLIP INGRAM, AND CHUCK STANLEY you can feel this soul music coming from a mile away!
The ballads are all esential. You can't tell if these tunes were done in the 70's or 1989. That is a good thing as some of the most romantic and jazzier r&b songs were composed in the 70's. "JUST CALL MY NAME" (Top 10 r&b) is about supporting the one you love, even if you're not together anymore. "I NEED YOUR LOVIN'" (Another top 10 r&b)is a stirring ballad. The single was actually a remixed version done by JAZZIE B. (SOUL II SOUL) and was more uptempo. NOREAGA sampled this on his "N.O.R.E." release for his rap "I LOVE MY LIFE". So if you're looking for that version you may be a little dissapointed to find the slower version on the disc. "WE'RE GONNA MAKE IT" a lovely duet with TED MILLS (of BLUE MAGIC) is a sure standout as the two talented vocalists trade leads. Another standout duet is the silky "IM SO GLAD" with CHUCK STANLEY.
The uptempo "SLEEP TALK" (Another top 10 r&b hit, without a video) and "MY LOVE IS SO RAW"(Featuring rapper NIKKI D.) also went top 20 r&b peaking at #12. This album is full of classic r&b, hip hop and jazzy tunes. Russell Simmons even produced the heart-wrenching ballad "NOT ON THE OUTSIDE". Go figure?
ALYSON WILLIAMS wears many hats on this release. It is never mentioned that she was one of the first r&b singers to merge with hip hop music along with MICHEL'LE before MARY J. BLIGE came along. This release is a must have for any fan of r&b music and even though her second release didnt do as well, this album stands out among anything released at that time. Sing on ALYSON!
GOOD OLE R&B.......2001-08-21
What ever happened to good R&B music. Well Alyson Williams Delivers on this Album RAW. The first few tracks are straight up ballad funk with the subtle sounds of the old motown with today hipness. With Alyson's powerful yet tender vocals this album just could not lose. And dont' forget the slammin' uptempo jams that are still being played in clubs today. This is a must for the fan of real R&B music that is not sampled or out of style. A must have!!!
Diva soul!.......2000-04-08
This little known R&B artist has so much talent! Buy this cd and you'll see what I'm talking about, but beware...it's full of soul!
