A few decades ago nearly every country singer had at least one--often more--gospel albums in their catalog. Today, aside from gospel veteran Amy Grant, who balances the sacred and secular, and Randy Travis, that concept has long faded. For Alan Jackson, however, treating the musical past as present has been a way of life, as it is with these 15 timeless hymns from his youth. Recorded with just two acoustic guitars and a piano, it was originally a private Christmas present to his mother. The spare instrumentation is surprisingly robust behind his flawless readings of "I'll Fly Away," "Softly and Tenderly," "How Great Thou Art," "Are You Washed in the Blood?," and "The Old Rugged Cross," all as beguilingly unpretentious as any of his country hits. Instead of an all-star duet, wife Denise and daughters Mattie and Ali join in on "'Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus." In the end, what began as a private bequest becomes a moving, eloquent gift to Jackson's entire audience. --Rich Kienzle

My Rating is in the 100 plus stars...........2007-08-03
I have been looking for a good ol' gospel CD for a long time....I am thankful Alan Jackson decided to make this CD...having grown up in the Church of CHrist, I am in love with the gospel sound, and the gospel songs...it's nice to go back in time once in a while...
An inspirational CD!.......2007-08-01
An inspirational CD! Takes me back to the simpler days of my youth when my world revolved around my parents and grandparents. Reminds me of the purpose of life and where priorities should be. If you like Randy Travis' "Worship and Faith", you'll like this one, too.
GREAT SONGS.......2007-07-23
Great collection of all the classic songs we used to sing in church growing up.
Precious Memories by Alan Jackson.......2007-07-22
Excellent product. Thoroughly enjoyed listening to the CD. Product was shipped in a very timely manner.
Precious Memories.......2007-07-18
For several months, I had been looking for a cd with many of the old hymns that I grew hearing and singing in curhch. I opened up dozens of cds on Amazon to listen to samples and just didn't find the "right" one until I heard Alan Jackson's "Precious Memories" cd. WOW! I'm not even a country music fan, but he sang every song in such a way that sweet, precious memories just filled my heart with joy. Each selection was done so simply and beautifully. I love it! slb

Your soul will thank you. One of my all-time favorites. Thomas A. Dorsey is a genius--one of the best American songwriters...ever. As a tunesmith, he is up there with Jagger, Richards, Dylan, Lennon, Waits, Newman, Foster and Ray Charles. What a record.
This is a par-excellent album!!!.......2004-01-24
This is a wonderful album, I love it! Dorsey is a master, and this album includes a powerful testimony before track one, describing the moving story of the death of his wife, and the inspiration for writing "Precious Lord, Take My Hand". Top to bottom this album is a gospel classic!

Customer Reviews:
my opinion.......2007-08-01
This recording was reccomended somewhere as being even better than the newer version with Bryn Terfel and Renee Fleming - it really is tops, I think. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau is as lyrical as ever. And the other soloists are also breathtaking.
Wonderful, but not my first choice.......2007-04-07
I believe this was the first recording of Elijah in English that used an "international" conductor and some international singers. Fruhbeck gives a good, dramatic sweep to the piece, with some wonderful dramatic moments. This is an old fashioned performance, with only a solo quartet, and if there is a semi-chorus, I can't tell the difference. This means that the soprano is the Widow, and an Angel, the mezzo the Angel and Queen Jezabel, etc. You really should have a libretto, but you don't get one at this price.
Fischer-Dieskau roughens up his voice for the role, and therein lies a problem. The voice spreads and his diction suffers because of it; that and his unidiomatic pronounciation, with far too many rolled "r"s. He does the drama well, but what works well in lieder works here less well on the large scale. Odd, given his success as on opera singer (check out his Iago), that here he frequently comes off blustery.
Dame Gwyneth Jones belies her reputation and gives a contolled, dramatic performance, using her "edge" to advantage in "Hear Ye, Israel". Gedda's diction is amazing, with exactly the right color for this literature, and projecting a little more blood than an English tenor.
Dame Janet Baker is my star in this performance. Dramatic, heart-rending when need be, and in wonderful voice. She'll chill your blood when she tells the people of Baal to "slaughter him, do what he hath done!".
And as for the people of Baal, the Philharmonia Chorus is wonderful. Incisive and dramatic, with beautiful tone. I could do without the trick of the boy choir for "Lift Thine Eyes", and I miss the small ensembles, but all in all a fine performance, and good recording, circa 1968.
First choice in English, Daniels/Terfel: better Elijah in Terfel, better recording, more authentic orchestra, small vocal ensembles (as per the score) but inferior women (including Fleming: beautiful tone, but where's her head?). In German, it's Sawallisch/Adam all the way.
But if you're singing Elijah, and have a score, this is a good choice.
THE BEST recording of the BEST oratorio ever..........2006-08-15
Okay, I'm gonna admit I'm biased- I first sung in the chorus of Elijah when I was 14 and it made a BIG impression on me!
This recording is in every way wonderful. Starting with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He IS Elijah to me. His singing is perfection. He has amazing phrasing and his diction makes it possible to understand the lovely, inspired libretto to this heavenly music. There are so many pieces that are ephemeral, but a couple of my favorites are: #14, Lord God of Abraham and #37, For the Mountains shall Depart. Dieskau does a great job of what I think of as compassionate, heartfelt singing. His interpretation sounds like the voice of God himself. It has a quality of kindness and yet he sounds just as convincing reprimanding the people of Baal. He is the true highlight of this recording.
That said, the rest of the cast is wonderful as well. Gwyneth Jones has a lovely, silvery voice that has a clarion bell-like tone that rings over the large orchestra with ease. She has occasional "misfire" but is a consistent performer. Dame Janet Baker and Nicolai Gedda both perform at a consistently lovely level. The orchestra and chorus are both wonderful. #15, Cast thy Burden upon the Lord, #32 He that Shall Endure to the End, and #38 Then Did Elijah are all highlights.
All said, for me the main reason to get this recording is Dieskau's Elijah- after all, he's the main character. But don't forget the lovely music. This story is exciting and passionate and sacred all at the same time. For me, it's the best oratorio that has a moving story and great music too.
Too bad there are so few recordings of Elijah.......2006-07-03
This is a good recording of an oratorio that deserves more attention. The chorus and soloists are very good--I just wish Fischer-Diskau wouldn't slide around so much in singing the title part!

A Timeless Classic.......2007-05-21
A Timeless classic in today's world of music all sounding the same. The voice of an angel and the only singer that can be compared to Minnie Riperton.
A classic.......2007-05-12
This is a CD for anyone who loves music. A must for your collection.
A great voice and classic tracks. Buy it!
One of my Old Favorites.......2007-04-17
I was a big Chante Moore fan in the early 90s. I first heard of her from one of Eldra Debarge's solo albums where she had a guest spot on, the song was titled "You Know What I Like" (I think). She had an amazing voice then with breathtaking range and here, her arrangements are so suited for her. On top of that, her music had that extra touch of class to it that I really appreciated as R&B at the time started morphing (some may say 'mutate' is a better word) into songs that were unnecessarily graphic & raunchy (Silk, Keith Sweat, Kut Klose, etc.). No offense to fans of those artists, just not my thing.
This was her debut album and it's great. "Love's Taken Over" is so smooth, and the orchestration in the background is simple, yet still strikes a mood. I've always believed that live instruments and instrumentation makes a song more timeless than enhanced electronics and maybe that's why even toda, that song's quality sticks out so much. I still remember when "It's Alright" was popular too and the numerous remixes to it that came out. It was a nice, mildly up-beat take among the slower moody ballads. Anothe rhighlight is 'I Wanna Love Like That', which has a bit of a bossa beat to it, "Candlelight and You", featuring Keith Washington and maybe one of my favorites, which still sort of sticks out as a good chillout track, the reprise to "Love's Taken Over".
I certainly recommend this. Over 13 years later, this still gets rotation from me. I don't really look at it as though she didn't get much air-play. I remember when her songs from this album were always on night programs in the early nineties and then the remixes to "It's Alright" were also featured very frequently. But it's true that she didn't get the air-play that several other more 'pop' R&B artists got at the time. This one and her second album are the only Chante Moore albums I checked out, and both of them are terrific.
CD review.......2007-03-10
This is a replacement of many CDs that were stolen from my car. I have always loved her voice and find that a decade goes by and I still enjoy her music
Another underrated, ignored R&B album.......2005-10-10
I don't understand why we didn't hear more from this album. I still listen to it 13 years after its release. It is classic R&B from beginning to end. To me, this is a perfect album for those evenings when you want to chill or if you've had a long day at work and want to have a relaxing drive home, pop this one into your CD player. Chante's voice is in top form and the production on the whole album is slick. Songs like Love's Taking Over, Finding My Way Back, the title track, Who Do I Turn To and Sexy Thang are solid. Like Karyn White's Make Him Do Right album, this album came and went with little fanfare. It's too bad - all of the tracks on this album have hit potential and there were no filler tracks.

If Ours's 2000 disc, Distorted Lullabies, was notable for singer-songwriter Jimmy Gnecco's vocal similarity to Jeff Buckley and his fluent command of tortured pop-rock (hardly groundbreaking traits, but serviceable), then Precious makes the case for Gnecco as genuine-article artist. There's a truckload of emotion here and while Gnecco is more screamer than crooner, his viewpoints linger long after the final chords. Opening with the spiky--and cheeky--"Kill the Band," Precious segues into "Realize," a straight rock tune with a pealing guitar lead that solders the chorus to the bridge. Paler shades are explored later in the disc; "Broken" begins as a dirge before erupting into a musical firestorm with Gnecco's howls at the vortex. "If Flowers Turn" is wistful pop abetted by tambourine and do-do-do vocals, while "Red Colored Stars" trades muscular electric guitar for acoustic and octave-defying vocals. --Kim Hughes
Customer Reviews:
Shattering glass.......2006-11-09
This album has been in my collection for awhile and rightfully so. This man has an incredible voice. Even if its not your cup of tea, you gotta give the man his dues. Very good songwriter also.
Jeff Buckley NOT greater than Jimmy Gnecco.......2006-07-29
I must agree with Chad from Texas. From a technical standpoint, Jimmy has a much wider range of vocal techniques than Jeff ever had (or at least greater than Jeff ever recorded). Jeff's falsetto is much more nasally in tone than Jimmy Gnecco, who learned so well from his mentor that his falsetto far exceeds Buckley's. Moreover, Jimmy Gnecco has a much greater range of emotions that he can, and more importantly, is willing to deliver than Buckley.
Going a bit further, I think that Jimmy's willingness to reach deeper into his psyche and dredge that up into his writing also makes him a much better lyriscist than Buckley. Buckley is only willing to go near certain lyrical subjects - basically more tranditional masculine blues based idioms - women, lost highways, drinking and vague insanity. By comparison, when you listen to 'Meet me in the Tower' by Ours, you get the distinct impression that Jimmy is actually talking about laying a ghost to rest between him and a person which caused him some great amount of personal disturbance. Buckley never disturbs me - much in the same way that Robert Plant never disturbs me. Jimmy not only disturbs me at times, he touches me, soothes me and allows me to identify with parts of myself that Buckley cannot.
I think it's a very TIRED comparison, and note that I am a huge Buckley fan as well. I like the cereal comparison (see above). That being said, I think we are lucky to have BOTH artists - so if you haven't bought Grace, I'd say buy both Grace and Precious - you'll love them both.
Besides, isn't the real question do you like them both - Gnecco and Buckley? Does it matter that Jimmy Gnecco has some Buckley-like characteristics? Not really.
And if you've ever seen Jimmy Gnecco live, you'd know that he is an imitation of no one - that guy is totally alive and original. The main reason Buckley is so huge is that he is dead, which is a stupid reason to exhalt anyone. If he were alive, the same people who don't want Jimmy Gnecco to get any credit for his unqiue talent would most likely also be complaining about the quality of Buckley's latest album.
There was a time when we all just liked music, instead of pretending to be arm chair Rock Critics. Rock Critics aren't very much fun - just ask Chuck Klosterman. In fact, go buy all of Chuck Klosterman's books too while you're here buying Jeff Buckley Grace, Ours, Precious and maybe pickup Oceansize "Everyone into Position", or "Effloresce".
Good Stuff.......2006-07-14
When I first got the album, I quickly set it aside as a waste of money without even hearin ghte whole thing.
Went back a few months later to find it is actually good stuff.
#1 fault to this CD, is that the very first track is pretty terrible...
I got around that by not including track one in my Ipod.
Otherwise, this CD is really pretty good. Interpol, Beck, Stills fans will like this one, but I have to advice for the bands previous release, the samples on this site don't make me want to gamble on it.
A great CD even for this metal head.........2005-08-12
I admit it, I love about 6 songs on this disc. My main genre is heavy/hardcore rock, but Jimmy Gnecco writes great songs and is one of the best singers I've ever heard. Red colored stars is now one of my favorite songs of all time. A little more user friendly then his previous effort (which Jimmy basically played every instrument on, a true work of genius that album), I'd seriously hesitate to call this Emo. Alt rock for sure.
I Came For Jeff Buckley & Found Jimmy Gnecco.......2005-07-17
I only listened to this CD because of all the rumors I had heard about this singer who sounded just like Jeff Buckley. Of course I was excited. But let's face it; there will never be another to fill the Jeff Buckley void.
Perhaps going into the CD expecting Buckley is not the most appropriate for one who tries to be unbiased. However, it tends to make one the most critical especially as an obsessed Jeff Buckley fan; any recognition of similarities simply relays the severity of Jimmy Gnecco's impressive vocal talent and grasp of technique. And he demonstrates this not only through his back-of-the-throat screams and sweeping falsetto but through his similarities to a variety of artists including Switchfoot singer Jon Foreman in "Outside," a softer Deftones' Chino Moreno type sound in songs like "Broken," and the sporadic harsh Buckley-isms throughout the CD. His lyrics are more sophomoric, but he certainly shows promise as a musician.
The opening song "Kill the Band" displays tinges of emo; the band was obviously influenced by such music judging by the lyrics on the CD. However, it is not too obvious and can easily be passed off as pop-rock.
"Realize" is a standout song because of its in-your-face likeability. It sounds great played loudly and is definitely one to sing along to. The bright guitar sounds similar to a simpler, less funky Red Hot Chili Peppers.
"Places" shows off Gnecco's accomplished vocal range. The lyrics are simple but could be perceived as holding a deeper meaning that what shows on face value.
The guitar in "In a Minute" sounds like something from a Quentin Tarantino movie. It's a really fun song.
"Chapter 2 (Money)" also has waves of Tarantino throughout. It is one of the best songs on the album because Gnecco seems the most emotionally involved in the words. However, it does not have the most original structure.
"If Flowers Turn" is also a beautiful song with plain lyrics but one with a deeper personal meaning.
"Femme Fatal" is the only song whose lyrics are not included in the liner notes. Perhaps this means that the band thought it most important and wanted the listener to really pay attention and not simply read along. Or perhaps it was too personal for Gnecco to openly display the lyrics.
Overall, Ours is a promising band with an adept vocalist who will hopefully be recognized apart from Jeff Buckley one day.

Jeremy Spencer was part of the creative heart of the original, pre-Buckingham/Nicks Fleetwood Mac--a talented songwriter and slide guitar foil to the estimable Peter Green, blessed with the sweet, high voice of a teen idol. Thirty-five years after his departure from the band to find God, and twenty-seven since his last solo recording, Spencer still has that angelic voice and a touch on slide guitar that makes Precious Little the comeback blues album of 2006. A few songs do misfire. "Bitter Lemon" has a clichéd premise, but Spencer's buttery ease on the slide resonator is spellbinding. And "Psychic Waste," which lays humanity's sorry state at the feet of the entertainment industry, is flatly delusional. Yet his "Trouble and Woe" is remarkable: a deep song about wanting and loneliness with twined guitar and harmonica melodies that moan out the tune's sad emotional core. Elmore James's "It Hurts Me Too" and "Bleeding Heart" shimmer with authenticity as Spencer slows them down to let his unhurried, dark-toned slide take command. And the title track, which recalls Mark Knopfler's post-Dire Straits work with an arrangement built around gentle electric guitar fingerpicking, is a song of faith and pilgrimage befitting the former rock star's hard-won spiritual orientation. --Ted Drozdowski

Album Description
"Precious Little" represents a sensational comeback for Jeremy Spencer, one of the original members of Fleetwood Mac, whose signature slide guitar and vocals helped define the early sound of that legendary group. After thirty years, with his chops fully intact, Jeremy has returned with a stunning new album that easily equals any of his early triumphs. As his former bandmate, Mick Fleetwood, remarked after hearing "Precious Little", "Great! All the passion, humour, poignancy, and yes, the magic touch. Congratulations on a righteous album."
Customer Reviews:
thank you, Mr Spencer.......2007-05-12
i bought this item for my Dad, who has followed the careers of Jeremy Spencer and the rest of Fleetwood Mac from day one.
he was thrilled to learn that Jeremy had returned to the recording studio, and delighted to find that it was a most triumphant return. not a single second on this disc is wasted, apparently - all great music.
all quality music lovers should consider this album!
Born again in Norway.......2007-05-08
Very refreshing to hear Jeremy Spencer return to recording that sweet slide guitar that he plays. He's in fine form and voice here, with a great cast of "whodats?" from Norway. With some topical songs, reworked blues standards and the hilarious obscure cover of "Please Don't Stop", a highlight is a heartfelt original, "Maria de Santiago" which showcases his band's dynamic ears. If you enjoyed Jeremy Spencer's turns at the microphone in Fleetwood Mac, I think you'll also enjoy this.
Precious Indeed!.......2007-01-16
Great to hear Jeremy Spencer after such a long satbatical. Recording sound is great as are the supporting musicans. What needs to happen now is for Jeremy, Peter Greeen, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood to get together again. Kinda missing the edge.
Welcome back, slidemaster!.......2007-01-04
A long time in coming, but the return of wee Jeremy is a sight for sore ears. Gone from the wax for some thirty five odd years, our lad returns with his slide riffs still crisp, vocal cords still impassioned, and powers of mimicry in tribute to his forebearers still seamless. If you loved it as it was with the Mac's, you'll love it still as Mr. Spencer recreates the sound of Elmore James, 50's rockabilly and ,of course, Jeremy Spencer. Holding up much better than his famed partner in crime, (No offense to Peter Green whose legend still looms large, but is now merely a shadow of his former self) Jeremy still sounds as if he'd just stepped off the tour bus and is plugged in and ready to play in your town. Thank God for the folks in Norway who never let the feeling die and were able to successfully coax our lad out of his self-imposed and long regretted (by the legions of his fans, that is)retirement in order to make this record a reality.
A must have for all fan's of authentic urban blues, the original Fleetwood Mac, and the one and only Jeremy Spencer. If your tastes are suited to any of these categories, run out and by this cd. You will not be disappointed!
Back From the Dead!.......2006-12-04
Well, ain't it about time? Here's an album to give fans of the old-time Fleetwood Mac something to crow about. The issue of Precious Little finds Jeremy Spencer back from the dead and in a big way. The first few notes make it apparent that this isn't some has-been's lame attempt at cashing in on baby-boomers' nostalgic remembrances of the legendary Fleetwood Mac of the Peter Green-Jeremy Spencer years, but a brilliant new work that should stand on its own and bring Spencer new fans.
I like almost everything on this CD, particularly Spencer's own compositions and his renditions of a couple of Elmore James classics. My favorites here are:
1)Bitter Lemon-Who said white boys can't write real blues? This has Delta written all over it.
2)Psychic Waste-a wry look at the state of the entertainment industry.
3)It Hurts Me Too-An Elmore James classic I first heard 40 years ago performed by another legend, John Mayall.
4)Dr J-A new twist on a classic made famous by the original Fleetwood Mac.
5)Bleeding Heart-Another Elmore James classic, exquisitely rendered here.
6)Trouble and Woe-One of the two best Spencer originals here. Its a stunner!
and,
7)Maria de Santiago-Soulful guitar and vocals with a Latin flavor.
If I had to pick a song I didn't like, it would be Please Don't Stop. The rockabilly is a bit out of place here.
I see that Spencer has issued at least one other solo album since he disappeared after Fleetwood Mac's great Kiln House, but I haven't heard it. After being bowled over by Precious Little, I may have to pick it up.
I recommend Precious Little first to any blues fans, then to anyone who ever was a fan of the first line-ups of Fleetwood Mac. If you are in one of those groups, then you should order this for yourself without hesitation. I'm glad I did!
Welcome back, Jeremy Spencer and thank you for such a fine piece of work.

wow!.......2007-06-21
For some reason it took me 7 YEARS to re-listen to the Pat Benatar albums my dad's girlfriend let me borrow (or maybe she wanted me to have them?)
Anyway, back in 2000 I was mostly concerned with hit songs from popular artists, and didn't have much patience to try and get into music I wasn't familiar with. In other words, I was about as close-minded as they come.
It's now June 21, 2007. It's summertime! I gave Precious Time another shot. I LOVE THIS ALBUM. I always knew Pat Benatar had the perfect female voice for rock and roll, and this album totally proves how good she used to be.
Her voice is so good and convincing, it's like she was born to sing rock songs. Her excellent voice isn't the only thing that makes the album great- it's also the highly enjoyable songwriting. Every song is written so perfectly, and you can remember how every song goes because the vocal melodies are quite tasty and original.
Great music. Not just the hit songs like "Promises in the Dark" and "Fire and Ice" either. The super melodic and rocking title song, her cover of the Beatles "Helter Skelter" and the reggae beats found on "It's a Tuff Life". Lets not forget the other highly melodic tunes such as "Evil Genius" and "Hard to Believe". I love this album. Pat Benatar really was an excellent musician.
Life Is Too Short Not To Own This.......2007-04-19
First let me mention how disappointed I am with the Chrysalis remasters of the first three Pat Benatar's albums. Luckily, I don't have issue with the music, which in essence is the most important thing; it's the skimpy artwork, no liner notes, no big celebrity nods to the power that is Pat - but what can you do? At least, as I just said, the music sounds outstanding. Precious Time was Pat's third album. Released in the summer of 1981 this album brings back so many memories; I had the first two albums and heard the first single from this album while at the municipal swimming pool in Mosinee, Wisconsin; "Fire & Ice" hit the radio and I hit the edge of the pool. The smooth bass line as the opening riff to that single still actually stands the test of time, the second single, the power house "Promises In The Dark" actually opens the album with a sneak attack; starting out with a piano and guitar combo Pat sounds like she's going to be coming out with a ballad but by the time the first chorus ends, the drums and electric chomps kick in and it goes all powerhouse from there; in the early days Pat did a few covers on every album and Precious Time is no different, but rather than a smooth reworking of any old 60s songs, she adds a grungy layer to Paul Revere's "Just Like Me" (though if you ever heard the live version she was doing back in 1979 the re-recording isn't as good) and of all things "Helter Skelter" which actually rocks pretty hard and closes out this short 9 song set - but in between "Promises" & "Helter" there's a lot to love - the super impact of the 6 minute title track ("Cut it out baby stop it/ life is too short so why waste precious tiiiime") a little ditty about self obsession and the seedy side of a glamour life, a theme reinstated on the reggae-ish "It's A Tuff Life" which has some of the most snarly vocals ever done by my Ms. B; the uber cool and chord changing "Hard To Believe" which has some of my fav lyrics and for a little over the topness, the strange yet compelling "Evil Genius" full of horns and crazy lyrics about an evil little boy who goes on a killing rampage. Apparantly, Pat was pushed into recording this album very quickly; her contract had her promise to make a new album every 9 months, and the reviews were awful, particularly one in Rolling Stone dubbed "spandex ballet" but the fans loved it, and though it was grittier than the straight ahead rock of Crimes Of Passion or the new wave nuance of In The Heat Of The Night, it still got spun on my record player for a long long time. Incidentally, the woman who wrote the terrible (and it was awful) review of Precious Time for RS back in '81 ended up writing a biography book on Pat Benatar - I guess when it came to the money, she too could be persuaded to love the spandex clad rock goddess.
Precious Time.......2007-02-07
This is Pat Benatar at her finest! From Promises in the Dark to her excellent cover of the Beatles Helter Skelter this album is great from beginning to end and perfect to take along on a road trip. It will keep you rocking from beginning to end. If you don't own anything else by her, this is the album to start your collection.
Pat Benatar's Third Great Album In A Row.......2006-11-06
PRECIOUS TIME is Pat Benatar's third great CD in a row. "Promises In The Dark" is about betrayal and deceit, and the title song, could in the wake of the trumped-up 2005 Indonesian drug-smuggling conviction of a young Australian tourist, be interpreted as a woman telling her boyfriend, "If you won't change our honeymoon from Bali to Hawaii, I'm getting rid of you." This album, which seems influenced by Steve Miller circa BOOK OF DREAMS, Ted Nugent's first three albums, and the harder side of Heart, was Benatar's last great album. She put out some excellent ones after this, but never quite attained the quality and consistency of the first three again.
equal to its predecessor, an underrated #1.......2006-04-13
Pat Benatar's 1981 album "Precious Time" turned out to be her only #1 album. Unfortunately it does not receive it's due. It doesn't contain any classics the way that Crimes Of Passion does, and it doesn't have any big hits like Get Nervous, Tropico or In The Heat Of The Night do, but I still think this album is amazing.
She carries on the sound from Crimes Of Passion, so if you like that album, you'll like this. There were two hit singles, Fire And Ice and Promises In The Dark. Promises stands as one of Pat's greatest recordings. The gem of the album is the title track, a 6 minute track. Keeping with the spirit of Crimes Of Passion, she also does two great covers, Just Like Me and Helter Skelter.
The album mostly was a holding pattern from Crimes Of Passion but that doesn't mean it wasn't a fantastic album. You can hear hints of the style she was going into the next album, Get Nervous, in "Evil Genius". She even dabbles in reggae with It's A Tuff Life.
If you love Pat Benatar, this album is a must have in your collection. You may not be as familiar with the singles off this as her other albums from 1979-1985, but you'll still be in a treat

A great folk album from the 1980's....yes, from the 1980's..........2007-03-30
I bought this album when it came out. It came out in 1982, during the height of New Wave music and MTV videos. It was not running up the charts when it was made, but I didn't care. It is an absolutely wonderful album, with not one false song in the batch. It is amazingly eclectic. Arlo, Pete, and their superb band do ragtime, folk, blues, gospel, and back to folk. There are so many damn highlights it's impossible to pick just a few. The album starts off with the best rendition of Wabash Cannonball I've ever heard. The rendition of Harry Chapin's Circles (Harry had just died the previous year) is really beautiful and precious. I love Arlo's passion on Run, Come, See Jerusalem. How Can I Keep from Singing? is very powerful, and the title track is rousing as hell. It goes on for 7 minutes or so, and it has a chilling finish to it with the crowd fully totally into it. Do Re Mi (a tune by Arlo's dad, Woody) is better than the original, I'm Changing My Name to Chrysler is a great dig at corporate welfare (before the term corporate welfare really came into being). Garden Song is absolutely hilarious (especially the way Arlo "teaches" it), and the rendition of If I Had a Hammer is the most rousing I've ever heard (and I've heard at least 10 versions of the song). Hard to believe that a great folk album like this got released in the 1980's (and on a major label too), but we should be grateful. It shows that occasionally major labels get some things right....

Arlo Guthrie and Pete Seeger teamed up in the summer of 1981 to give a blessed crowd an incredible opportunity to enjoy a SUPERB outdoor concert performance. The songs on the two CD set are mostly folk music about the working class and the everyday common man. We hear songs about the "raggedy raggedy" workers who need empowerment in the form of a union to stay alive; and there's a great song entitled "I'm changing my name to Chrysler" sung by Arlo to demonstrate how fat corporate America gets much more social welfare in the form of government bail-outs than the poor ever will. Arlo's sarcasm of the necessity for money for impoverished people to merely exist is evident in his social commentary song "Do Re Mi." (Arlo uses the word "Do" as a synonym for money.) Arlo also dreams of a world where guns disintegrate and flowers grow; the crowd becomes ecstatic. However, there's more than just social commentary and opinions here. There's also the beautiful love song sung by Pete, "Kisses Sweeter Than Wine;" and the song "Circles" about the twists and turns of life. We are treated to the bittersweet yet somewhat amusingly performed classic "Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone" sung by Arlo with the musicians accompanying him. The electricity throughout the concert is amazing but this last song is especially powerful because of the way it is so beautifully performed with just the right amount of improvisation. Yet the most powerful moments are at the very end of the concert when Arlo sings the infamous "Amazing Grace." Arlo explains that the song was written by the captain of a slave ship who realized the error of his ways and turns his boat around to return the would-be slaves back to Africa.
All throughout, both Arlo and Pete enjoy a masterful ability to lead their audience exactly where they want to take them while keeping them entertained all the way!!! Pete often helps the audience participate by singing along with his songs; Pete has often called himself a "sing-along leader" on many occasions during his career. Even at the end of a fairly long concert; the electric atmosphere is so powerful that the audience is truly screaming for still more. A tour de force for Arlo and Pete!
The CD set is well produced and of course being a professional recording it is recorded from the soundboard on stage and certainly not from the audience. Arlo and Pete have ample musicians to help them along, introduced by Arlo by their first names only during the song "Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone." The musicians make this classic into a great jam session with a lot of fun for the audience and any CD listener.
In addition, the two CD set comes with a booklet giving you all the words and credits for each song. In addition, most of Arlo's spoken words to the audience are carefully written out for you here.
If you are a folk music fan but you don't have this two CD set in your collection, get it now and set aside a LOT of time because you will not be able to listen to this set only once before putting it away. I have listened to it countless times over the years and it has never lost a shred of freshness nor power. If you want a primer on folk music laced with some spiritual accents and social commentary, then this is also a great CD set for you. We are truly lucky to have these two ingenious men amongst us all these years. Their compassion, intelligence and wit abound in every song so carefully performed for their audience. If you can, I would also recommend any other CD set that showcases the talents of Arlo Guthrie and Pete Seeger performing together live. This would include the two CD set of their 1975 live concert entitled Together in Concert, and possibly also More Together Again IN Concert which was recorded in the early 1990s.
A BUY! SMILE
As it was in concert.... captured........2005-04-29
My tape copy has been worn out, my CD replaced twice, once because my friend's daughter was going overseas and she wanted it and the next because my own original had a skip or two.
If you listen to Pete Seeger singing the Walbash Cannonball the melody will haunt you and Wehomaweh will amaze you with the range of his voice and the Tarantella will have your toe tapping. Smiles will come every time you hear The Garden Song, with Pete & Arlo singing. And in this troubled time I'm Changing My Name to Chrysler and The Neutron Bomb sung by Arlo makes one shake thier head, and sort of smile.
The musical quality is superb for a live recording, the choices of songs for this CD were at the time topical and are still. This is a CD or tape or album that is timeless and amazing to listen to and will become a favorite of the whole family...tiny ones love The Garden Song and my teen just refered to the Chrysler song as a political ballad that she needed to hear again since it had been a year or 2 since she had listened to it.
Great Folk Disc.......2004-11-17
Every fan of Pete or Arlo should have this cd. It's got some great tunes and classic Arlo comedy. There's not a bad song on the two discs. This is my second favorite live recording by these two.
My favorite record of theirs is finally available on cd, and you can even buy it at Amazon now. It's called Arlo Guthrie & Pete Seeger Together in Concert. It came out in 1975 and the concert was shown on PBS.
So my advice is to buy this one, and if you like it go get the other one too.

Among opera singers there is often a role associasted with a singer (for example, Callas/Tosca, Bastianini/Carlo Gerard, Gobi/Scarpia)..But in time others attempt the same role with various degrees of success, and sometimes even unseat the front runner!...Not so with Carlo Buti...there will never be another popular song interpreter like him, who has been imitated but never equaled. Every song in this collection - some of which are very hard to find - is recommended 100% by one who has heard him in person as well as in recordings. Bravo Buti, Bravissimo!

Fans of Euphoria's earlier semi-chilled CDs of ambient Americana might be taken aback by the nasty blues snarl of "Back Against the Wall," the opening track of this third Euphoria CD. Sounding like the J. Geils Band circa 1975, guitarist Ken Ramm unleashes a backsliding electric blues scrawl over a crushing four-on-the-floor groove and doesn't let up until Howard Levy drops in with some gut-bucket harmonica. Since their semi-hit "Delirium" on the first CD, Euphoria has traded on an organic brand of electronica, picking up on Moby's rustic roots sampling ethos. But instead of samples, Euphoria boasted the real guitar playing of Ramm. On Precious Time, he dials up some changes, with Steve Sidelynk (Madonna, Massive Attack) mixing live drums with the programmed rhythms for an even more organic sound. In addition, vocalists top out several tunes. Tina Dico, who has sung with Zero 7, adds a sophisticated yearning cadence to the song called "Blue," and her "Sinners and Saints" is a strong bid for a pop single. Tracy Bonham brings her soulful voice to the mournful, yet still propulsive, title track. But most of Precious Time is instrumental, with "Cowboys" and "The Getaway" returning to the more countrified electronica of earlier CDs. Euphoria is still an exploration in sound, even at their most pop. Ramm mixes fingerstyle guitar with Indian tabla drums and vocal percussion on the aforementioned "Blue," and goes purely acoustic on the solo 12-string-guitar idyll, "The Glendale Train." "Vapor," an impressionistic 10-minute excursion composed with Brian Eno's Oblique Strategy cards, is an odd closer for an album that otherwise relentlessly lives up to the Euphoria name and promise. --John Diliberto
Album Description
The music Euphoria makes is truly unique: lush, sweeping soundscapes which blend acoustic and slide guitars with modern electronica and trip-hop to create a sound that has been dubbed "guitronica." Euphoria's music has struck a chord with listeners over their first two albums, earning radio chart success and garnering placements in TV commercials for Nissan, Lee Jeans, and Apple (iPod), films such as "Vanilla Sky" and "Hidalgo" and television shows such as "CSI," "Malcolm in the Middle" and "Roswell." The third Euphoria album is the strongest yet, filled with an energized blend of slide guitar and psychedelia as well as stunning vocal tracks featuring Tina Dico (Zero 7) and Tracy Bonham. With this release Euphoria is poised to become a household name among guitar aficionados and electronic music lovers alike.
Customer Reviews:
Synths and Blues guitar actually sound pretty good together........2006-11-14
The fundamental song-type from which the album is built is a 3-5 minute instrumental, featuring gritty slide guitar reinforced by heavily-produced drums and a strong synthesized bass line. "Cowboys" is my favorite of these. While this is a really cool sound, one song at a time is enough. It seems that producer Ken Ramm knows this, since two of this type are never placed consecutively on the album.
Among the more varied fare are "The Glendale Train," an acoustic guitar solo, and "The Getaway," which is reminiscent of Massive Attack. "Blue" and "Saints and Sinners," featuring guest-vocalist Tina Dico, and "Anyone Can Lose," featuring guest-vocalist Tracy Bonham, would be at home on Balligomingo's Beneath the Surface or Conjure One's Extraordinary Ways with their electronic foundation and supporting guitars. The title track, "Precious Time" (another Tracy Bonham contribution), would unfortunately fit more comfortably among the song's of Delerium's Poem. The final song, "Vapor", is a long (over ten minutes) atmospheric experiment that reminds me of the Donnie Darko soundtrack, with a synthesizer drone and what I'm guessing is a guitar track played back in reverse. Apparently, "Vapor" is the result of an Brian Eno-style Oblique Strategy session (look that up if you don't know what it means - its an interesting concept).
Amazing Breadth, Style and Substance .......2006-10-29
I bought this CD after hearing "Back Against the Wall" on KCRW a few months ago--the nasty guitar riffs set to electronic beats intrigued me. But over time, what has emerged from many listens--and what still stands out for me--is my impression of how rich this record actually is--contributions from Tracy Thorne ("Anyone Can Lose") to Tina Dico (the amazing "Blue"), tracks that traverse very different worlds, the record is quite an amazing blend of style, guitar, and moods--it has very easily made it into my 'Top Five' of 2006, a feat considering how much music passes through my ears annually. It's also a fabulous listen with the top down. Highly recommended!
One hell of an ecclectic mix.......2006-09-06
For starters let's just say this. My musical tastes go all over the spectrum. I purchased this CD along with a King Crimson disc from 1982 and once upon a time I wrote jazz and blues reviews for a small, local paper.
So what got me onto Euphoria? I haven't really been listening to the radio for several years now. Just too much junk out there that gets too much airplay. "Bovine bands" I call them. They're good because everyone else says they are. Just like TV - most people really can't think for themselves.
So I'm actually LISTENING to the radio a few weeks ago and hear Back Against the Wall on WXRT out of Chicago. The "bluesy" feel of the song grabs my attention so I get home and check out the samples on Amazon. Wow! 30 second samples and they all sound good! Reckon I gotta get it so I do.
A wonderful CD! Can't say what category you'd put this band into and that's half the beauty. Shades of blues, jazz, country, new age and more.
I'm not big on vocals but Tina Dico and Tracy Bonham lend themselves to the music superbly!
I can't honesly say that I could listen to all of their CDs in a row from what I've heard as it does start to mesh together but the music is VERY refreshing. It IS an excellent change of pace and I hope this band does well without going "commercial". In other words don't go "bovine". This world needs a lot more original bands and there are so few out there.
Close your minds to the "popular" stuff and listen to artists. Who cares what everyone else thinks? After all, if I jumped off a cliff with a "hit" CD in hand would you do the same?
Open your mind to real music. Buy this CD.
caught my ear.......2006-07-06
nice intro of instrumental sound, blended with the vocals, but wishing for more variety. still a nice listening for wishing to just be laid back and relaxing for the afternoon.
Conjures Texas of fantasy.......2006-05-25
Having grown up in Texas, I have a static image of this state, one shaped by its cities and suburbs which are much like the cities and suburbs you find anywhere but with more barbeque restaurants and Tejano music. Living now outside of Texas, I am also familiar with the Texas of popular imagination, filled with cowboys, Cadillacs, and people like President Bush (for better or worse).
Popping this CD into the player conjures up an image of Texas entirely different from the other two. And in particular, I'm referring to the tracks featuring slide guitar prominently: #1, 3, 5, 6, and 10. I've never been on Highway 90 which goes through West Texas about 50 miles north of the border with Mexico, but I imagine these tracks might make a perfect travelling companion for a drive out there at sunset. You can almost smell the dust being kicked up.
Personally I find the other tracks to be more standard-fare, but at least they're done with high production values. On another CD they might be perfect, but following the aforementioned tracks, they rift the mood, like someone pulled the curtain back on my drive out in West Texas.
Overall, good stuff. If you like this CD, you might also want to check out CDs from the group Lanterna, such as the CD Sands.
