Customer Reviews:
What is this?!.......2007-07-12
I am a big fan of the Luti-Kriss album Throwing Myself, and Norma Jean's first album Bless the Martyr and Kiss the Child. And O God the Aftermath was not as good, but I enjoyed it for what it was. But after listening to Redeemer, I asked myself "is this the band that recorded Bless the Martyr?!" Different does not always equal bad, sometimes it equals better(Underoath for example), but in this case, different does equal good or better (in my opinion). At least when it comes to the route Norma Jean has taken with this album.
This album can hardly be called metal or metalcore. The instrumentals are simply not as heavy as before. And the vocals...the only thing I could say when I heard the vocals in this album was "what the f*ck?". The vocals in O God were not as good as Josh Scogin's in the previous album, but they were acceptable according to my taste. But I cannot stand the vocals on this album. It sounds like the singer is trying to puke out a bad meal he ate.
All in all, I was not really into this album. But I still consider myself a Norma Jean fan, and hope for the best when their next album comes out. The band has changed in some way with every album. Maybe I'll like the next change they'll make.
I recommend the new Haste the Day album over this, but that's just my opinion.
veering toward mainstream rock.......2007-06-23
This recording reduced the qualities in Norma Jean that I felt defined them: odd time sigs and dissonance. This recording seemed like an effort to recruit fans of more of a classic rock structure. I love NJ, but I found this album to be mostly uninteresting as I have heard this all before in previous decades of rock.
Good hardcore band.......2007-06-22
These guys rock.
Buy all their albums.
Go to every show you can.
I will
Automatic one point deduction for picking the wrong religion
Scary.......2007-06-16
Dude i don't listen to punk Rock..........i mean i like Fall Out Boy but Damnnnnnn what kind of music is this?!!!!!!!!! Whoa...Did someone say never again.........I exxagerate but that is to say , this music is very freaky.
Not That Good.......2007-06-14
This CD is not very good. Bless the martyr and kiss the child was better, and O God the aftermath was better than all of them. This cd seems very muffled and his voice is not that great. The CD seems rushed, and just isn't Norma Jean at all. I hope their next CD is better.

best album ever.......2007-07-01
You suck if you don't own this cd in your collection. If you're religious or not, Pick..It..Up! The chaotic madness on this cd just never gets old for me. I really don't need to write an extended review because you should already be listening to it.
Getaway.......2007-05-28
I've had this album for a while, ever since it came out, oh what five years ago? Just never on disc format. This album still has alot of push in it. I just bought it for the first time, in compact disc form, the other night and I still love it to death.
Norma Jean sets the benchmark for all those who have tried to follow in their footsteps. This album alone proves why they are the best, the superior definition to this genre, and what better album to show off as being the best of the bunch then Bless the Martyr and Kiss the Child. Buy it now. Even all you pop punkers out there reading this.
Very satisfied.......2007-03-08
The CD was in perfect condition as well as the case. I'm very happy
This Destroys!!.......2007-01-04
Don't think about it just buy it!!
Why are you still reading this!!
I was lucky enough to find these guys one day and this album ripped my face off and then tried putting it back on so it could rip it off again. I love everything on this CD and I pitty someone who loves hardcore or metal who hasn't heard this.. your standards will go a bit higher and suddenly things you thought were the pinnacle suddenly will not seem as good.
In all seriousness they have a created a great album that anyone metal head/ hardcore fan should own. I've been a fan ever since this came out and have not regretted anything they've put out. Please give it a try!
good solid Norma Jean.......2006-11-10
if you like Norma Jean, it's a pretty good album. hard crunching and full of hard goodness.

Customer Reviews:
Superlative collection.......2006-10-11
A collection of 100 individual arias and ensembles from the EMI catalogue of complete works recorded between 1955 and 2003. It includes selections from operas by Italian, Austrian, German, Russian and French composers. The French composers are especially well represented unlike most such anthologies. And there are several more obscure contributions, such as an aria from Catalani's La Wally. A well-judged balance of musical periods and styles, and the very best singers of the last half of the last century. And remarkably, the whole collection of 6 CDS, over 7 hours of music, is being sold for the cost of only 1 CD !
Great value for the money.......2006-04-23
This is simply the best collection of opera arias that I have seen. It's not 100% in that there are a few well-known arias that are not here, but what is here is simply a treasure. The organization is a bit strange, but there's some logic. For example, Disk 6 is mostly from French operas. A seemingly endless amount of glorious music. Just fabulous. You won't be disappointed.
Great for the money and a good starter on opera...........2006-01-07
This cd is a splendid collection of songs, and the price is unbeatable; I have but a few minor complaints about the overall product. The cd would have been much more enjoyable if they had put the music in some sort of order, rather than jumping around from artist to artist sporatically. My only other complaint would be that they could have chosen some better vocalists to play some of the songs. For example, in CD 6, track 3: Romeo et Juliette, the singer was not nearly as strong and definative as she should have been and I've definately heard in various other versions that were way better than this. This disappointed me greatly. But even with these few small complaints, this collection is still great and the price is amazing. It includes MOST of the famous opera pieces, as well some great songs that are often overlooked such as the beautiful song from Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg (CD 6, track 16) along with others.
Amazing Value.......2005-08-23
I am so impressed by this collection that I must share my joy at getting so many beautiful arias, duets, et al in one collection. It captures many of the great operatic voices in stellar performances spanning the last 50 years. If you are enchanted by beautiful operatic highlights, removed from their operatic storylines, this set is for you. Hours of gorgeous music for practically pennies!

im the poser? really?.......2007-07-16
that loser who wrote a review before me needs to shut his mouth before i come to his house and freaking make him incapable of speech. (or typing) this guy needs to learn that death metal is not the only kind of real metal and that metalcore fans don't just listen to that particular genre and then hate everything else. dude, if you read this name your 5 favorite bands and chances are i at least like all of them. i picture you being the loser who doesn't know how to mosh and still tries, isn't hardcore and tries to be, and doesn't know anything about real metal and tries to hide that by listening to the heaviest stuff he can. oh and you're probobly one of those morons who calls metallica "poser" even though without them, you'd be rocking a Ratt t-shirt instead of that Sabbath one. yeah i said it, metallica killed hair metal, not sepultura so go kill yourself. if you want hardcore, check out carnal forge, job for a cowboy, and slechtvalk. oh and have you even heard As I Lay Dying? listen to their first album, beneath the encasing of ashes, and you will instantly shut your stupid mouth. you're about the last person on earth to realize that metalcore is real metal too and that instead of putting Norma Jean down, you should be beating up the real posers: slipknot fans and people like you who try to make up for their lack of hardcore-ish-ness (that's right, i made up a word) by only listening to the heaviest music you can find and calling everyone else poser.
Metalcore.......2007-01-02
sucks. If you like this album you are a poser. That means you think cradle of filth is black metal and slipknot is death metal. One guy I know that listens to norma jean, as i lay dying, and unearth, called me emo for listening to acid bath. How stupid can you be? You posers need to wise up and listen to real metal, such as Morbid Angel, Darkthrone, Amon Amarth, OLD Sepultura, and Dissection.
Lest you forgot what Botch sounded like..........2006-12-31
When I first spun this CD in my car stereo the thing that immediately jumped into my mind is that this CD sounded more like Botch than anything I'd ever heard besides Botch. This isnt necessarily a bad thing though, I liked Botch a lot and this is a great CD nonetheless. O' God the Aftermath isnt as noisy as Norma Jean's past CD's and certainly nowhere near as noisy as Josh Scogins new band the Chariot, but still contains enough mathy riffs to satisfy any fan of your standard mathcore bands (Dillinger, Coalesce, Botch, ETID, etc) Overall definitely worth a listen.
hard and true.......2006-09-24
I myself am a christian and i have to say this is no regular christian band they are better than most christian bands and music. They dont push it down your throat which i like. I like non christian music to. Look at my cd collection(bleeding through.atreyu, the black dahlia murder). But i have to say i like the change from btmktc. I like btmktc but u cant base them of that cd anymore its not the same band. Cory can tear up the vocals just as much as josh can. I also do like that chariot but they are nothing compared to norma jean so if u like random heavy and good music than u should check these guys out they rock.
funny name for a band!.......2006-08-09
however, this band gets the point across. I don't know what they're saying, but it is apparent they are worshipping Jesus!
get this band if you're into a variety of styles of Christian metal/rock, such as Petra (r.i.p.), Bloodgood (r.i.p.), Stryper (welcome back), the Showdown, As I Lay Dying, Jacob's Dream, Zao, Kutless, Demon Hunter, Mortification, Narnia, Tourniquet, Extol, Underoath, and Hangnail, and you should get it if you're into the myriad of metalcore bands that are out now.

THE Country Reissue CD of 2007 - Three Classic NORMA JEAN Albums.......2007-07-22
I was thrilled to discover this CD was released! Norma Jean, indisputably one of the greatest female country singers of alltime, hasn't received much attention since she retired from the Porter Wagoner Show in 1967 (and was replaced by the then unknown Dolly Parton). Norma Jean continued recording for RCA until 1973 and released about 20 albums during her ten year stint on the label and this CD contains three of those on one disc.
To paraphrase a popular phrase, this is not your granddaughter's country music, this is about as watered down as 200 proof whiskey. Norma Jean is COUNTRY to the bone like Kitty Wells and classic Loretta Lynn yet thoroughly her own woman. Some of this stuff you could square dance to ("Life of a Poor Boy")! Indeed, the songs are all over the hard country subject map from cheating ("Another Man Loved Me Last Night"), boozing ("I Threw Away the Rose") to mama ("There Won't Be Any Patches in Heaven") and new babies ("Tippy Toeing"); death (the unforgettable "Hundred Dollar Funeral"), no-good husbands ("Promises, Promises"), recitations ("Old Doc Brown"), sex ("In The Park After Dark") to traditional values ("Home Made Love"), racy double entendres ("Somebody's Gonna Plow Your Field"), to feminism ("Truck Driving Woman") and all of it sung by Norma Jean with sincerity and frankness.
This CD combines three albums, 1972's I GUESS THAT COMES FROM BEING POOR (one of the first "concept" albums by a country artist, all of the songs are tied to poverty) (tracks 1-10), 1968's honky-tonkin' BODY AND MIND (tracks 11-22), and 1970's ANOTHER MAN LOVED ME LAST NIGHT (tracks 23-30 and regrettably two tracks short of the complete album, a curious decision. I'm particularly disappointed because it's one of the few Norma Jean LPs I don't own!)
There's so much great stuff here it's hard to choose the best but "Hundred Dollar Funeral" is so extraordinary it deserves special mention. Norma Jean also does a fine job with on no less than three Merle Haggard songs ("Hungry Eyes", "All of Me Belongs to You", and especially "I Threw Away the Rose"). She also does a unique spin on successor Dolly Parton's classic "Coat of Many Collars". She is always believable, whether singing the joyous "Tippy Toeing" or the embittered "You Wouldn't Know Love".
This pure country music was recorded at the height of the smooth "countrypolitan" crossover sound which was completely alien to Norma Jean. Overshadowed at the time by more citified country stars like Tammy Wynette, Jeannie C. Riley, and Lynn Anderson, these albums lack any major hits for her (for those see her BEST OF NORMA JEAN cd which is now out-of-print and going for top dollar) but she is every bit the solid singer she was on her greatest hits here. Country music just doesn't get any finer or more real than Norma Jean.

another great gerard schwarz cornet album.......2006-02-02
Once again I am amazed by a great Gerrard Schwarz album. I own all of his albums and bought this one right away. I think he is quite possibly the most musical trumpet/cornet player ever to play alongside Maurice Andre. This album is great, and there are many more albums featuring these great players that should be re-released, such as "Festival of Trumpets" with the new york trumpet ensemble. Nontheless this album is a must pickup for any music enthusiast.
Not Your Normal Repertoire....but EXCELLENT!.......2005-09-27
I didn't know what to make of this CD before I bought it, and still haven't totally figured it out as I was listening to it, but I did find it very enjoyable. "Turn Of The Century Cornet Favorites", as this CD is titled, seems to be a misnomer...I didn't recognize one selection among the 19 tracks contained, but that may be the greatest appeal of this CD for any cornet player, brass player, or aficionado desiring some relatively unknown, but well-played, music from a bygone era. As I was listening to the CD, images of the turn-of-the century came to mind. I imagined sitting near a gazebo, while a community band and soloist performed on a summer's eve, or perhaps at a pavilion at the World's Fair. Having played french horn and other brass instruments in my youth, I was familiar with the names of Clarke and Arban (who wrote a celebrated Cornet Method still used today in many colleges and conservatories), and some of their better known compositions. But I have to admit, this materials was all new to me. For anyone wanting to supplement their brass CD collection with recordings not found anywhere else, this CD will do very nicely indeed. The playing by cornet player Gerard Schwarz in amazing, with technique to burn and a beautiful tone to match. Kudos also goes to the outstanding accompaniment he receives from the Columbia Chamber Ensemble. Also, please see my review of "Footlifters" (another winner), part of the Brass Masterworks series on Sony. Keep them coming.
This is Music.......2005-09-20
You would be hard pressed to find any recording that exhibits greater qualities of lightness, motion, and beautiful phrasing than this one. Add to that Schwartz's beautiful tone and flawless technique, and you have the perfect model of how these cornet solos should sound. I write as a trumpet player who has played quite a bit in this style.

Wow!.......2007-07-23
I never thought that I'd hear a trumpet player that I could put on a par with Miles Davis...of course Miles is still God, but perhaps Hakan is a major deity?
The virtuosity of the playing on these pieces is stunning. I have to admit that on first listen I didn't really like all of the pieces; some sounded to harsh and more "jazzy" than classical (not that there's anything wrong with jazzy!)
On a second listen, though, the harshness went away and the brilliance of the playing came through.
This is a must for any trumpet player or fan.
Excellent recording.......2005-08-06
Having heard much of Hardenberger's piccolo work, I was pleased to see that his cornet playing is equally impressive. He nails technically demanding pieces without sacrificing his beautiful sound. Arban's Norma Variations and Hartmann's piece based on Rule Britannia are never dull, and Hardenberger is accurate and virtuosic on the more modern pieces, including the Francaix Sonatine and the fiendishly difficult Maxwell Davies sonata. Every piece is superbly played, and Pontinen provides good accompaniment.

Though considered a country footnote--she's the woman Dolly Parton replaced in Porter Wagoner's show--Norma Jean was, along with Loretta Lynn, the bridge between Nashville female pioneers Kitty Wells and Patsy Cline and the late-1960s crop led by Dolly and Tammy Wynette (Norma's "Then Go Home to Her" is a Tammy template). Her voice had a creaminess that might have carried crossover potential in a later era, but it still broke, tore, and twanged in all the right places, and she had full command of both modes. She toyed with provocative titles ("Let's Go All the Way"), lived and loved in sin ("Pursuing Happiness"), endured bleak consolations ("Put Your Arms Around Her"), had a mind of her own ("Don't Let That Doorknob Hit You"), assayed one of the most bizarrely sentimental tunes in Nashville history ("The Shirt"), bared a proto-feminist streak ("Heaven Help the Poor Working Girl"), and contributed a convincing female trucker song ("Truck Drivin' Woman"). What more could you want? --John Morthland
Customer Reviews:
Worth Every Penny.......2007-01-30
This Collector's Choice Release is absolutely superb. Unless you have a few original 33rpm LP's, this is the only source for one of the finest voices in Country Music. Norma Jean began her career alongside the great Porter Wagoner, being his first/original female for his long-running show; she was pre-Dolly Parton, and in my opinion, by far the better singer. Her voice has the vulnerability of Tammy Wynette, the strength of a Heather Myles, and the gentleness of Leona Williams...most importantly, she predates them all! Norma's music, is not entirely unlike Buck Owen's-influenced Bakersfield sound. There are 21 songs here, inlcuing the well-known collaboration with Bobby Bare on "The Game of Triangles". Other notable standouts are, "The Shirt", "Whiskey 6 Years Old", and "Go Cat Go". There is not a bad song on this CD. The Liner Notes are excellent and its doubtful that the sound could be improved upon. Yes, it's a little pricy, but considering the limited production run, it is well worth your money and ear. (...)
The forgotten Wagonner.......2006-10-25
Norma Jean made an indelible impression on me as a VERY young man in the early to mid sixties with her no-nonsense delivery and hard edged sound. Where Bakersfield catered more to the men on Capitol, RCA tried to compete with female singers like Norma Jean. Porter was greatly influential in getting her the RCA contract and then worked like a mine mule to get and keep her front and center both in the TV studio and on the road. That she was only able to score minor chart success was not indicitave of what she was capable of. Her range, subject matter and lessons learned under one of the most masterful band leaders in the business made her a consumate touring professional who knew how to do much more than just sing. The woman could ENTERTAIN.
One of the things that hasn't been mentioned about Norma and her recorded work was that for the majority of her early stuff she "danced with the one that brought her" and used The Wagonmasters as her back-up band. The musicianship of that group is nothing to be sneezed at either as ensemble or individualy. All in all this is an AWESOME disc and worth the money.
Best hardcore band........2003-12-15
Norma Jean are one of the greatest hardcore/metalcore bands of our time. Especially for christians.
Traditional sixties country queen - almost forgotten.......2002-10-10
Norma Jean was one of those wonderful singers who never had the hits that she deserved. Maybe it had something to do with rivalry between TV and radio, as another reviewer suggested, but I suspect it had a lot to do with the male domination of sixties country. The same reviewer nominated his favorite hard country female singers, but missed out Jean Shepard, Dottie West, Rose Maddox and Melba Montgomery as well as anybody who came later (like Dolly in her early years). Norma was a fine singer, but there have been too many greats for her to get in my top five.
Norma's biggest (and only top twenty) solo country hits were Let's go all the way, Go cat go, I wouldn't buy a used car from him and Heaven help the poor working girl. Several other songs included here just failed to make the top twenty. However, Norma's most successful record was The game of triangles in which Norma joins Bobby Bare and Liz Anderson for an amusing but sad story of a married man, his wife and his mistress.
All Norma's country hits (however small) are here, but (like other reviewers) I'd like to see some of her albums released on CD. I would choose I guess that comes of being poor, a seventies concept album about poverty. I doubt if that will ever happen, especially as some far bigger country stars are still poorly represented on CD.
This is a brilliant collection, well worth buying if you're a fan of traditional country music.
NORMA JEAN IS A TRUE COUNTRY QUEEN!!.......2002-08-19
I love this lady!! She is without question one of the top five most outstanding "hard country" female singers of alltime - with Kitty Wells, Loretta Lynn, Sara Carter of the Carter Family and I'll let you pick the fifth slot. Norma Jean does not get the credit she deserves in country music history possibly because like most country stars who were regulars on syndicated TV Shows during the 1960's ("The Porter Wagoner Show", of course) she didn't get as much radio airplay (old rivals, TV vs. radio, I guess) as she deserved and only five of her songs were top twenty hits. But the public loved her and bought her albums which always did much better on the Billboard charts than the singles (the album charts were based on sales, singles based on radio airplay) including her 1966 "Pretty Miss Norma Jean" LP which went to #3 - very rare for a woman to hit the album chart that high at the time. This album contains all 21 of Norma Jean's Billboard-charted singles, 1964-1971. She remained on RCA until 1973 but was too hard country during the early 70's "countrypolitan" era for big hits although she released fine music to the end of her RCA contract. I would have loved to heard some of her "flop" RCA singles on this disc from that period like "That Songwritin' Man", "Hundred Dollar Funeral", and "I Know An Ending" as they were outstanding performances. But the hits here are great. Another thing that probably scared off country radio from playing too much Norma Jean she was one of the very few women singers at the time unafraid to record songs that cast her in an adulterous light, ie: "Conscience Keep an Eye on Me", "The Game of Triangles", "Then Go Home to Her", and "You Changed Everything About Me But My Name". Those outstanding tracks are here plus her signature song "Let's Go All the Way" (despite it's title, not really a risque' song) and other NJ favorites like "Put Your Arms Around Her", "I'm A Walking Advertisement for the Blues", "Heaven Help the Working Girl", etc. Norma Jean is so great she had other country stars writing her songs to record (ie: Liz Anderson, Jeannie Seely, Bill Anderson) and those hits are included here. Much as I loved this CD the packaging could have been better, the liner notes were clearly written by someone unfamiliar with her and probably with country music. (Also that writer errs stating Norma Jean recorded a 1978 album for Bearsville when that was a soul music artist who also went by the name Norma Jean). Still, I am thrilled to have this pretty miss singing away on my car CD and I sure wish her great old RCA albums would find their way to this format as well!!
