Amazing and Soulful.......2007-07-03
I first heard this recording at a session at the 2007 conference of the Association for African American Historical Research and Preservation and I have been listening to it ever since. This CD really is a celebration of music.
I have put in this CD without telling people what it was and have enjoyed the totally positive response.
Was disappointed.......2007-05-22
I bought this CD because of the great reviews and didn't like it at all. Too loud and abrasive for my ears... I gave it away to someone who might better like it.
I expected it to be mellifluous and soulful but found it rather annoying... especially at the holidays.
excellent, excellent cd.......2007-04-26
there is nothing more i could say about this cd that the other reviewers haven't already mentioned - it is a must have for anyone, even if you are not a fan of christian music. i had never even heard of this project - i bought it soon after it came out, simply because i liked the cover art and thought it would be a good cd to have around christmas. it's better than that - i listen to it year round. every song, no matter what style, is delivered with all heart and soul possible. excellent lift-you-up music, and great to listen to in the mornings to get you pumped up for the day. "and he shall purify" is simply electrifying. i am also a big fan of the final song, "halleluja!" and "but who may abide the day of his coming" will just set you free! year round, this is an outstanding example of gospel, jazz, hip-hop and absolute zeal for any music lover.
Awesome Recording.......2007-04-11
Handel's Messiah: A Soulful Celebration is a masterful interpretation of an age old classic. The arrangements are sheer brilliance. My hats off to Mervyn Warren and all those involved in this project.
OUTSTANDING!.......2007-03-16
This album won a Grammy many years ago. I saw a Gospel Choir perform the Halleluah Chorus live at the award show. Since then I have not only enjoyed the recording tremendously myself I have given it to several people at Christmas time and they have been equally enthralled. I loaned it to my son's High School Choir teacher and finaaly made it a gift when he refused to give it back!

Duke Robillard and Ronnie Earl are among blues guitar's hottest pistols, but their first studio union is no showdown. Although Robillard is steeped in all aspects of technique and Earl is a pure "soul" player, their styles overlap in the Texas and Chicago schools, which grant both giants plenty of space for elegant and biting single-note solos, daredevil string-bending, and chugging rhythms. Robillard sings two numbers and "Mighty" Sam McClain, whose red-clay voice is the perfect foil for their emotional fretwork, guests on Earl's heartbroken epic "A Soul That's Been Abused." The real mojo, however, is in the instrumentals, where these virtuosos who emerged from the New England scene to achieve worldwide acclaim maintain a beatific dialogue. They both swing like T-Bone Walker on "Two Bones and a Pick" and trade sliding chords and slide guitar licks on "Zeb's Thing," which dips into down-home Mississippi grit. The highlight is "My Tears," on which Robillard sings sad and dirty, Earl turns sustained notes into Zen koans, and both players stretch their flair for dynamics and brilliant, unhurried, lyrical playing to its limit. Fans of blues guitar need to hear this album. --Ted Drozdowski

T-Bone's Spiritual Sons.......2006-06-16
If you've ever liked the T-Bone Walker style, or drooled over the pure T-Bone licks that both Ronnie and Duke have graced us with over the years, "Two Bones and a Pick" is eight minutes of pure jump-blues-guitar-heaven. I can, and do listen to this for hours on end. If any two white guys have got that jump-blues-guitar-thang down, it's these two. T-Bone is grinning like a Cheshire cat.
A guitar duel with production and quality music to back it up.......2006-04-27
Unlike some artists who get together and try not to outplay each other, i.e. not show each other up, these two planned the session well ahead that allows each to show their virtousity against each other without the latter.
The production, songs chosen and performance from other backing musicians are brilliant.
If you like guitar duels in the jump blues fashion, this is a recording to buy.
Royal Rhapsody.......2006-03-09
This disc combines the considerable talents of two premier guitar players within the Blues genre. The Duke (Robillard) and the (Ronnie) Earl demonstrate why they are deserving members of Blues guitar royalty. It has been well documented that this effort is not a showdown between rivals or a stage to demonstrate one-up-manship but rather two friends kicking back to jam back and forth and effectively intertwine their extensive expertise. I can only offer that this fine effort is seamless, seeming to be an overall masterpiece versus a collection of individual songs. The instrumental flow and sequencing of the songs is superb. The songs don't seem as lengthy as they are, avoiding the tediousness that sometimes befalls such efforts. Quite to the contrary, the hour plus of excellent music contained within seems to fly by leaving the listener wanting more. The two players pass the baton back and forth in an effortless manner, almost overly conscious as to not dominate the other's time. Ronnie and Duke demonstrate they are passionate craftsmen and worthy members of the upper class. Mighty Sam McClain's plaintive plea on "A Soul That's Been Abused" will only leave you wanting more. Ronnie Earl's slide guitar work on "Zeb's Thing" is also worth special mention. This is a can't miss addition to anyone's collection.
The Duke Meets The Earl.......2006-02-20
I bought this album on pure speculation it was an Amazon recommondation and was uncharted waters for me. Owning around 200 blues albums with close to 100 of them being lps. I had never listened to either of these guys. Read the reviews and seemed like it would be a good venture. Received my cd figuring it would be like most blues albums and would take several listens before it would start throwing its arms around me. Wrong! This is one of the few albums I own that nails you right out of the box! It has been in my car stereo for around a month now and shows no indication of getting old.The first three tracks are non stop adrenalin guitar work with number three at just over 15 minutes just being a total piece of work. Smooth like a well aged whiskey. The final track with guest singer is one of the more haunting blues pieces I've ever heard. It's one of the few pieces I know that actually brings you to the edge of reverse blues and makes you feel bad this track is also in the 15 minute time slot too. All and all you can just let this cd run and it becomes nice back gound music to what ever it is you are doing. All in the way classical music does. I'd be surpised if any one really listening to this could give a bad rap! This is a real guitar players record.
Good stuff.......2006-01-25
First off; I really appreciate artists or labels that give you at least 60 minutes of play time and don't cut out lengthy guitar solos. This CD certainly delivers in this regard as Ronnie Earl and the Duke trade guitar jams in creative duets for a solid 70 plus minutes. This is a close 5 star recommendation but it isn't a classic and it isn't groundbreaking; although I would think some reviewers would seriously disagree with that point. It's just damn good music by two pros whose different styles compliment one another. Highly recommended.

Album Description
As an arranger, composer, pianist, and producer, Duke Pearson was Blue Note's secret weapon for more than a decade. This 1967 all-star octet session features 6 great Pearson tunes and arrangements. Freddie Hubbard, James Spaulding, and Stanley Turrentine are the primary soloists. This music pops with vitality. An alternate take of "Los Malo Hombres" has been added to the original LP.
Customer Reviews:
No doubt about it! .......2007-02-23
It's a honor to be the first one to review this excellent recording. I just purchased this re-release by Mr. RVG and all I gotta say is thanks a million, because this one is superb beyond belief. From the moment I became a jazz fan I also became almost immediately a big fan of Duke Pearson. Yet, I had only one album of his as a leader 'Sweet Honey Bee' (which by the way I give a 4.5!)and I still had some doubts about just how good this one could possibly be. Apparently, according to many jazz experts I've read, RVG has already remastered all the classics and most of these newest re-releases are sub-great. Well, I can tell you that statement is a terrible generalization on top of just plain arrogance. I love this recording and it already is becoming one of my personal favorites. Duke is an amazing composer as well as being one of the greatest jazz pianists of all-time . And that line-up of his with Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), Stanley Turrentine (tenor sax), James Spaulding (alto sax) ... do I need to go on or are you kind of getting the picture. Stanley T. and Freddie were at the top of their game in 67! It's just an A+ performance by the whole octet.
By the way, their bossa nova love ballad "My Love Awaits (O' Meu Amor Espero)" has to be one of the most beautiful pieces of music my ears have ever had the pleasure of listening to. I play it over and over again, each time seeming to love it more than the last. As Nat Hentoff wrote in his original liner notes "...it's as close to a flawless performance as one can find..."
If you are a fan of any of these cats, then definitely purchase this album. I can't recommend this enough! These guys give great performances with not one of them stealing or hogging the spotlight from the others. That's one thing I really love about Duke P. is that he loves to share the love - he gives each member of the band their equal time to shine with their solos. And do they ever shine and deliver the goods!!!

Inspired by the astoundingly popular The Three Tenors series, Broadway director Marion J. Caffey conceived and directed Three Mo' Tenors, bringing greater visibility to the classically trained African American voice. Starring seasoned tenors Roderick Dixon, Thomas Young, and Victor Trent Cook, Three Mo' Tenors is a theatrically staged concert set taped for public television's Great Performances. A companion to the taped show, the disc features just over an hour of live music from it. The phenomenal showmanship of Dixon, Young, and Trent Cook takes shape in the styles of opera, Broadway, blues, jazz, soul, spirituals, and gospel. The three virtuosos hit high C's with clarity and brilliance; scat with grace and grit; belt, bend and hold a note to beat the band. They move the audience to a state of near-ecstasy performing the traditional "Were You There (When They Crucified My Lord)" and Puccini's glorious "Nessum Dorma." Other standouts include the jazz classic "Twisted," a rollicking version of "Today I Sing the Blues," and the salty "Minnie the Moocher." Boisterous, bold, and bountiful, Three Mo' Tenors is a modern classic. --Paige LaGrone
Customer Reviews:
Bravo! Mo' Mo' Mo'.......2006-05-13
The word "Mo'" in the title got my attention. I bought the CD to compare it to the already popular "Three Tenors" (Placido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti and Jose Carreras). Wow! Was I surprised. I had expected an all opera, classical and possibly spiritual repetoire. But, the music varies from "Nessun Dorma" to "Love Train" was truly, truly delightful. I enjoyed the wonderful voices of Thomas Young, Roderick Dixon, and Victor Trent Cook and the variety of musical selections so much that I purchased several other copies for my family and friends. Then, several months later, I saw their performance on PBS. I immediately ordered the VHS offered by the TV station, paying way, way over the retail price. But, I had to have it. It was, and is, the most exciting musical performance that I have seen. Later, when I put the tape into the player at my son's house, my 5-year-old granddaughter Ciara stood next to the sofa to watch. I expected her to move away soon, but, she stood there, during the entire playback of the performance, and I do mean from beginning to end. I left the tape there so that son could see it later. The following day, and for most days during the next several weeks, Ciara asked to have the tape played, until she later was taught to handle it herself. The family has since replaced my VHS with the DVD so that now, when Ciara visits me, we can watch the show again (and again). "Three Mo' Tenors" was so surprisingly wonderful- with great voices, charismatic personalities, terrific orchestral arrangements, lively and precisely choreographed routines, and just an overall feeling of mutual admiration and respect among the three gentlemen. The beautiful cinematics, with frequently interspersed shots of the enthusiatic audience, contributes to the feeling that I am actually there at the concert. Every time I watch it, I see and hear something new. When I first heard the CD, I was not fascinated by the countertenor voice. After seeing Victor Trent Cook's heartwarming performance on the DVD, and hearing his comment about his mother's definition of a countertenor, I have been granted a new appreciation for his voice. Here it is, years later, and I'm still enamored, remembering Roderick Dixon's "Make Them Hear You" elicits tears, Thomas Young's "Twisted" makes me laugh, and the duet with Victor and Thomas (see, I'm now on first-name basis with them) is so beautiful. I could to on and on. In fact, it's time for another listen.
This is a must have for any music lover!.......2006-01-07
I would rate this CD more than five stars if I could! I picked up this CD not knowing anything about these guys, but, knowing that I liked some of the songs contained on it. I was absolutely blown away by this collection! These guys have it all. Voices, talent, showmanship, style, technique, etc. Everytime I listen to it, I feel like I'm sitting right there in the theatre. I am a huge fan of opera, jazz and gospel. This CD covers it all! Although my favorite tracks are La Donna e Mobile, Make Them Hear You, and Nessun Dorma, they are all so good! I wouldn't hesitate to buy this again. You have to hear them to believe them!
wonderful collection of music.......2005-08-23
A good album is one that can't be categorized neatly. Three Mo' Tenors tackles classic opera, Broadway tunes and other genres with ease. They have beautiful voices, and the music they choose to interpret is so universal that even my toddler girl loves listening to it! Their technical expertise combined with their stage presence and charisma makes for an enjoyable cd. Highly recommended - especially if you are looking to introduce yourself or your children to different musical genres.
awesome music selection.......2005-08-02
These are amazing musical selections and amazing vocalists; a must-have for any well-rounded music collection. This trio can really sing!
They Left Out The Best Song.......2004-11-11
One of my most favorite performance DVD's, but how, or why, on earth did they leave off the most stiring single number on the CD - "A Song For You," by Rodrick Dixon?
Put it in, and it's a "five."

Bobby Bland's purr-to-a-scream vocals quickly made him an R&B star in an era when rougher-hewn blues masters such as Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf had fallen from the charts. Bland, a former valet for B.B. King, established himself with both up-tempo workouts ("Farther Up the Road," "I Pity the Fool") and devastatingly subtle ballad readings ("I'll Take Care of You," "Stormy Monday Blues"). Greatest Hits, Vol. One is a generous sampling of the discs that made him a steady seller throughout the '60s. A second CD chronicles his work in the '70s after Duke Records, his longtime label, was sold to ABC. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
--.......2004-01-26
Along with Joe Turner, Jimmy Rushing and Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Bobby Bland was a rarity in the legacy of classic blues singers in that he was a singer who didn't play an instrument. However, unlike Turner, Rushing and Hawkins, Bland didn't come out of the jump/big-band tradition where such a dynamic was more commonplace.
The songs on this disc are not Bland's earliest recordings, but they are early, spanning 1957-1969 with an emphasis on the years 1960-1962, and they're his best and most seminal recordings. Not only that but the compilation comes at such a bargain price that even those unfamiliar with Bland would do well to pick it up.
Bland and his music, under the direction of bandleader Joe Scott, had a decided showbiz bent due to Scott and his orchestra that made generous use of horns as well as the usual guitar, bass and drums. The greatness of Bland was that his genuine and soulful stylings transcended the 'sweetening' agents of his accompaniment. That's not a knock on Scott and his orchestra though, for Bland's sound anticipated what came to be known as soul music in the '60s. Bland, well-groomed and dressed in a three-piece fronting an orchestra is something that really does it for me image-wise. He wasn't one of those other blues singers like John Lee Hooker who looked like a street musician thrown on a stage. Some would see Bland in a lesser light or less genuine than someone like Hooker because of his show and orchestra but that's b.s. Half those 'serious' blues musicians were just mailing it in and living on an image anyway, and these days they all are.
Included in this compilation is 'Farther Up the Road', Bland's first hit, later made more famous by Eric Clapton. On 'Cry, Cry, Cry' and 'That Did It' Bland loses his mind to a pleasing effect. The Brook Benton-penned 'I'll Take Care Of You' utilizes a haunting, spooky organ overdub that works as a nice wild-card element and 'Yield Not To Temptation' includes a manic hand-clapping beat and female backing vocals.
Great music, great price - what are you waiting for?

DUKEY'S STICK FINALLY HITS IT HOME WITH THIS ONE !.......2007-02-12
I saw quite a few of these reviews that said that this isn't George Duke's best effort. I can't compare this album to his more jazz oriented albums because I never heard those. I would say that this is his best R&B album.
This is the album where all the r&b elements he's been experimenting with since "Just for You" reached its apex and came together for one consistenly engaging record. "Reach for It", "Don't let Go", and "Master of the Game" all had their moments of brillance, but those albums were bogged down by a lot of filler tracks that's not really all that memorable.
Follow the Rainbow is a bag that's full of goodies. Creatively, the songs don't seem all that far fecthed since the Parliament and Earth, Wind, and Fire influences are still obvious throughout the record. However duke and his cast of musicians and singers has the personality and the songs to make these contemporary styles their own.
They also take a number of chances on this album that helps make this disc a masterpiece (especially during the the second half of the album). "Straight from the Heart" is a cool little fusion of Soul and Pop/ Rock, "Festival" continues the carribean styled jazz/funk that hardcore fans know him for. "Corine" is a smooth laid back midtempo burner that that crooses the line between Quiet Storm R&B and easy listening jazz. The exprimental tracks are equally as delightful as the R&B tracks and help give the album a bit of variety.
So even if people don't think this is George Duke's best overall album, you have to admit that track for track, this is his best R&B album.
Any music fan or old school head owe it to themselves to "Party down" to this record!
Follow the Rainbow..........2007-01-23
I too, waited patiently for this album (I received my copy in 2002 - but just now have chosen to comment on it!) At the time, I paid $26/US (Import Price) to get it from CDNOW before they merged with Amazon.com! I like the entire album, but my favorites are "Say that you Will' and 'Straight from the Heart." I can play those two songs all day long! Some folks are selling it for less, if the copy is good, snap it up! Five stars!
Highly underrated artist and album.......2005-05-06
I was a kid when this album came out..about 8 to 9...and together with EWF albums All n All ...they became my favourite albums....for years. And it is standing the test of time. just listened to it yesterday and grooved.
I can't understand why this album is not rated as a classic Funk album. I think it is because the problem that it has too many different styles together..and because it was to hard to grasp music to became to commercial. I have tried to look for better Duke albums but never found one..although i tried...
If you want to find a highly underrated gem and ur into funk and soul. Try this one. U will be highly surprised.
FESTIVAL!!!!!!!!.......2004-06-12
George Duke has spent most of his career offering up what I
call hybrid music-an upbeat mixture of funk,R&B,rock, fusion and
Brazillian music. And of course 'Follow The Rainbow" is absolutely no exception.Duke was in his prime in 1979 and aside
from the instrumental Brazillian jazz of "Festival" and the
gentle ballads "Say That You Will","Corine" and "Sunrise" the
album relys pretty heavy on uptempo, funky grooves such as the
highly EWF inflected "Party Down",the ferverant "Funkin' For The
Thrill",the joyous P-Funk of "I Am For Real",the smooth
"Straight From The Heart" and an instrumental the 'reaches' back
to a certain past triumph in "Pluck".So even ammong the ballads
and funk tunes, genres that all too easily slip into a formuliac
wasteland, are all given a thorough exploration here as Duke's
fine keyboard and synthesizer work amply explores the many musical worlds he chooses to visit. So in a nutshell this is one
of those albums whose cover is a very good visual description of
the music contained within. So if you see this CD cover, you know
you'll be in for a colorful,fun ride!
A George Duke Time Machine.......2002-11-24
Let me start by saying that I'm very happy that this import is available through Amazon.com. There are more than a few unscrupulous on-line importers who tend not to deliver the goods long after the check's been cashed. I've wanted this album on CD for many years, and when I found it on Amazon.com, I ordered it without hesitation.
Now, as for the album itself: By no stretch of the imagination do I consider this to be among Mr. Duke's finest work. It's a very good album, but it is very much of its time, which was 1979, when artists wanted rotation in discotheques in order to reach a wide audience. George struck a vein with 1977's _Reach For It_ and 1978's _Don't Let Go_. _Follow The Rainbow_ was a logical progression of that path, although it's unclear whether the path was charted by Duke himself or by the A&R department at Columbia/Epic.
Acquiring this album on CD was important enough to me that my current objective criticisms of it are unimportant. When this was initially released on LP, I was a 22-year-old kid stationed in Hampton VA, simultaneously having the best and worst times of my life. This album was part of that soundtrack -- to the "best" times, by the way.
The former keyboardist for Frank Zappa(!) and Al Jarreau (before he went mainstream) has always had a bag of tricks up his sleeve. He avoided being savaged by jazz purists, a la Herbie Hancock, because of his mastery of "blues" piano. His contributions to the "fusion" movement still stand tall today as the finest examples of the best of that genre. But his pedigree alone defies that he would be pigeon-holed in a "type" of music. Witness his classical work on _Muir Woods Suite_. Much of his best work still is unavailable on CD, including Columbia/Epic's "From Me To You" and his collaboration with the late Noel Pointer and Earl Klugh on "Mirabella" from the live album _Blue Note Live At The Roxy_. That stuff needs to be heard, but it isn't on CD anywhere. I've checked.
Nonetheless, there aren't very many examples of George's keyboard mastery on this CD. They're there, but this album is mostly vocals-driven in an attempt to reach for the pop audience. It's also very derivative of the groups who were on top at the time. Listen closely, or maybe not so closely, and you can hear Chic, Earth Wind & Fire, and of course, Parliament/Funkadelic in the arrangements. That's not such a terrible thing because they aren't direct rip-offs, and he did succeed in forming those influences into something of his own.
I can hear Philip Bailey singing the chorus of "Sunrise", which is the sleeper of this album, and making hay out of it. But unlike the predecessors, _Reach For It_ and _Don't Let Go_, George doesn't offer very much for those of us who just want to hear him play.
I love this album for what it was, I'm glad that I have my copy and I hope that more of his earlier work gets released.

Customer Reviews:
Deep, Deep Soul.......2007-03-10
Yep, the "I'm a Loser" album is the best deep soul affair ever waxed. The other album and extra tracks are just a bonus to let us know that "I'm a Loser" is far and away the best. Swamp Dogg Williams' production is spot on and the songs are full of pain and angst. Whenever I play this to friends and/or party-goers it stops all coversation; not a bad recommendation. I had the "I'm a Loser" album on vinyl and was presently suprised to find it on CD; I bought it without a second thought and play it when I need a dose of deep, heartbreaking soul. Go out and get it now; I'll wait!
Lost Treasure: Doris Duke .......2007-03-02
Lost Treasure: Doris Duke
Doris Curry was a session singer in New York before releasing several singles in 1967 under her married name, Doris Wellingham. After her divorce and second marriage she was privately Doris Logan, but professionally became Doris Duke, as in the "Black Doris Duke" to the Anglo-American tobacco-fortune heiress of the same name; a stage name much like that of rapper Jackie-O or DJ Coco Channel.
I'M A LOSER: THE COMPLETE SWAMP DOGG SESSIONS... AND MORE consists of 26 songs, comprised of the 1969 Canyon LP "I'm a Loser" (tracks 1-12), the 1971 Mankind LP "A Legend in Her Own Time" (tracks 13-23), and three Jay Boy recordings from 1967 (tracks 24-26). Disc packaged in black jewel case; total running time: 79:07. Booklet includes an extensive essay (in small font) by Tony Rounce, several photographs, original album covers, images of several 45 record singles, and songwriter credits (some chart position information is provided in the essay; producer credits and musician personnel are not included). Sound quality is good.
The disc concludes with three songs from 1967; track 24 was previously unissued (another song, "Make It on Out" was not included due to time restraints). The other tracks are taken from Doris's two albums produced by Jerry "Swamp Dogg" Williams Jr. Among the gems from these classic Soul albums are "Feet Start Walking", the up-tempo "Congratulations Baby", the bluesy "Ghost of Myself", "I Don't Care Anymore", the ballad "I Wish I Could Sleep", and "If She's Your Wife (Who Am I)". Familiar songs include "I'd Do It All Over You" (also recorded by Irma Thomas), "Since I Fell for You", and "By the Time I Get to Phoenix".
The song "I Don't Care Anymore" includes these lyrics: "Then I met a guy as smooth as silk, in a midtown bar / He said with my good looks, I'd go very far // I didn't know what he meant / I thought he was heaven-sent // Until I found out his sweet talkin' / Added up to street walking". There are other great lyrics as well as great melodies, music, and vocals.
Doris's voice is very similar to that of contemporary Blues singer Shemekia Copeland.
This UK import is not widely available, and often expensive, but is a great addition to any collection of late 60s and 70s Soul music.
The Real Deal.......2007-02-28
Can't add a lot to the previous reviews, just want to confirm everything said. This is true Southern Soul music. Doris doesn't impress you so much with the range of her voice, just her conviction. You feel every word she sings, and this to me makes for the best vocals. Want to also praise the Swamp Dogg production. Lots of nice touches and embellishments that makes this not only a great soul album, but a pop gem as well.
If you love classic Memphis soul of the 60s-70s (Bettye Swann, Candi Staton, Ann Peeples, Syl Johnson, Al Green), you'll love this disc.
All Killer, Some Filler.......2006-05-14
I am avid listener of Southern music and have to say that I would stack the first dozen tracks of this CD up against anything ever recorded at Stax or Muscle Shoals or Philly International. Duke borrowed her stage name from the tobacco heiress, figuring it might help her career, and went into the studio with Swamp Dogg to create some serious alchemy. The covers towards the end of the CD are victimized by poor arrangements (ex "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" is tough on the ears) but the stuff from her first album and side 1 of her second effort are top-shelf.
Hopefully someone will reissue Swamp Dogg's "Total Destruction to Your Mind" for another blast of Deep Soul.
no one compares with Doris Duke.......2006-03-17
I have never written a review for anything before, but I feel as if I have to encourage anyone who stumbles on this rerelease of Doris Duke's "I'm a Loser" to buy the bloody thing. You will not regret it.
I absolutely adore what Dave Godin referred to as Deep Soul. This might epitomize the genre. All of the tracks were produced by Swamp Dogg. The First twelve tracks are from the album "I'm a Loser" and the rest are from a follow-up album on the same label and maybe a few extras.
I travel for work quite a lot and people always end up in my car. Doris Duke is always in the player. People inevitably ask who she is. People might inquire because her voice has a raw quality quite unlike any of the other more polished sould singers of whom she was never quite a contemporary. It's that unpolished quality that draws me back to this disk time and time again. In Cleveland, a girl from Torrence, CA told me that the "I'm a Loser" part of this CD was her life story. I thought that was great.
There are four or five tracks (13 - 18) that are great. It does seem as if the second album lacked the cohesiveness of the first. Don't buy this because of the compilation aspects of it. Buy it because "I'm a Loser" may be one of the greatest Soul albums ever produced!
Kudos to Ace/Kent for making this music available. Keep 'em coming.

Volume 2 Of The Most Important Blues recordings In R&B History!.......2007-01-14
If you can find this Vol.2 of the Complete Bobby Bland On Duke Records collection anywhere, buy it. Even if it costs ten million dollars. This music is priceless. It will leave you speechless with tears in your eyes.
sadly out of print.......2007-01-03
The early 90s was a great time for CD reissues of old material. In 1992 MCA released the first of 3 double CDs that provided a comprehensive retrospective of Bland's Duke years. That '92 release covered the years 1952-59, with this release covering what many believe to be Bland's salad days, from 1960 to 1966. It was released 2 years later, in 1994. Finally in 1996 came the last double disc installment covering the last three years of Bland's tenure at the Duke label.
If there is any criticism to be leveled at this career overview, it's that it might actually be too extensive. Particularly early, there is a lot of similarity between many of the cuts. Also, the '92 release has two things going against it: it is the earliest music and has the pretty rough audio quality of many of the songs. This is further exacerbated by a low output and thin remastering job. The problem was rectified with Volume 2. Certainly these tracks were much better recorded, but the remastering job is also far superior. In fact, the audio quality on most of these tracks is breathtaking, making even the weaker and derivitive tracks an interesting listen.
Bland was at the peak of his powers in the early to late sixties, and he had Joe Scott's exciting arrangements, Wayne Bennet's crackling blues riffs and future James Brown drummer Jabo Starks' driving rhythms to provide ample power to throw him into overdrive. This was the epitime of jazzy blues. Everything was just right and blended together seamlessly. When the original material was excellent or the cover well-chosen, it was as good as it gets. Period.
It's sad that this series has been discontinued. One look at what this set is going for on the used market and you know it was a mistake to discontinue it. This is classic stuff; the time, the singer and the style came together in glorius synchronicity. It will not be repeated, so MCA should do the right thing and reissue this wonderful series. Six discs is not too much Bobby "Blue" Bland. Meanwhile, I'm sorry if you don't have this. If you have the money, volume 2 is worth every penny you will have to part with to find it and own it.
I was lucky enough to stumble across this............2006-01-09
If you are the type of person who heard Otis Redding for the first time, and fell in love with his voice only later falling in love the music all together then this is an album you must have. Bobby "Blue" Bland has an extremely soulful unique voice that can massage the stress right out of your soul. You will think to yourself how did I miss this, and then you will realize your life will never be the same now that you found it.
Just discovered something special here !!!.......2005-09-18
I am 24 years old, and I just brought this one home from the library. I feel like I have found something really amazing, and I had to come write a review on amazon. Great sound, especially for being from 1960-63 ish. Great performances, classic songs. Most of these songs I have heard in places throughout my life, and now I know who it was all along. Buy it now, or at least borrow a copy somewhere, It's great stuff.
The greatest BB 2 cd hit collection ever put together WORD!.......2004-01-15
First of all, Bobby Blue Bland is without a doubt the most gifted singer of his generation in the Blues/RB field, and when united with the writers, musicians and arrangements of the Duke team, it was a marriage blessed to create songs that will never
grow old, cold or fail to warm your heart deep in your soul. This collection is without dispute the very best of those happily married years. It a shame they didn't have more kids/songs to keep them coming back together, cuzz when they were together they couldn't be beat and were as hot as the funk brothers in motown. Hope someone takes a hint and tells their story, WORD!Yours truly, OldSchoolMaster1,Daniel M. Ellis.

Album Description
Lovers of classic R&B and jazz have an 'unbeatable' buffet of sensitively arranged original compositions and cover songs to choose from. Ray Fuller, who is magnetically drawn to the drama in any good piece of music, hand-picked pieces that have inspired him for decades only to refashion in his own sweet way and thus called on the elite of musical craftsman who are friends first, musicians secondFuller states, "Every one here is a master of texture and space."
Coltrane's timeless "Naima", features the brilliantly subdued use of Branford Marsalis on soprano sax. "Friday", featuring George Duke's funky solo was co-written with Jeff Lorber, and is a likely radio `smash' hit! On the classic "Superstar", stellar vocalist Phil Perry lends his uniquely emotive ad-libs to this most impassioned version. Perry returns on a version of The Isley Brothers' "Work To Do", which might make Ron Isley himself jealous! "Spanish Flyer", co-composed with Dave Kochanski, is a lush evocation of Mediterranean delights! "Weeper's Thang" and "Speak Brother", signature Fuller compositions, are `funky-deep' grooves featuring saxman Everette Harp and Duke, respectively.
There is so much more with which to sit back and relax or get up on the dance floor and forget your cares.

Customer Reviews:
What ??.......2006-12-10
The idiot from Virginia thought it a bit strange that an American black man would give the communists a chance. Looking back from modern perspective is easier than what he had to go on in the thirtes. Gee, I wonder why a black man would do that after all that southern hospitality, segregation, and steady work you gave the "black folk". Not to mention all those nighttime campfires you had going in their honor.
While I might be from New York I certainly would not be called a bleeding heart liberal but I can certainly understand why the poor soul was looking elsewhere. You are either ignorant of history and its influences on people or you are a totally unsympathetic jackass!!
Nice Voice, but not a nice person...(read on, pls.).......2006-01-07
Paul Robeson, who was brainwashed into
beleiving Communist rhetoric (which is
strange as hell for an Amer-I-can black
man). A good singing voice but all cover
songs! Come on, Paul!
A let down.......2004-09-24
I own several Robeson recordings and purchased this one with high hopes as it has a great selection of tracks. Unfortunately given the excellent recording quality of "Songs for Free Men" and "The Paul Robeson Oddyssey", the remasters from what I assume are 78's and possibly radio are a let down and mar what could have been an excellent album.
The definitive Paul Robeson compilation.......2003-09-19
This 2 CD set of Paul Robeson is the definitive collection providing a decent overview of his work in 50 tracks all wonderfully restored from 78s as usual for ASV, with spirituals, show tunes, Shakespeare-like readings, and more done with a trademark bass voice and orchestration that backs up Paul perfectly and he would later be one of the first civil rights activists. The first disc is a reissue of the single disc "Ol' Man River-His 25 Greatest" on ASV containing "Ol' Man River," "Mighty Like a Rose," "Joshua Fit De Battle Ob Jericho," "Carry Me Back To Green Pastures," "Lazy Bones," and many more classics which is also available here at Amazon for those who only want a single disc of Paul's work and the 2nd disc contains 25 more classics including "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen," "The Old Folks At Home," "My Old Kentucky Home," "Wagon Wheels," "Git On Board, Little Children," and many more. In other words, all 50 of these tracks are essential to any early pop, folk, gospel, blues, etc. music fan and this is the set to introduce yourself to his work in a convenient 2 CD package with the usual great liner notes and details on the original 78s ASV provides with each CD released in their Living Era series.
