What fun! This soundtrack of the film adaptation of the Broadway musical overflows with glossy, ol' fashioned '60s-style pep. It won't win any awards for innovation, but it may well be one of the most feel-good releases of the year. While not quite as super-energetic as the original Broadway cast, the new crew ain't too shabby: Nikki Blonsky delivers as Tracy Turnblad and Zac Efron (High School Musical) makes for a devoted boyfriend, and the supporting cast gleefully embraces the show's silly-but-generous spirit. John Travolta (who gets to utter the particularly ironic line "it's been years since someone asked me to dance") goes drag as Tracy's mom, Edna, while Michelle Pfeiffer's slight stiffness is appropriate for her uptight character, especially on the cha-cha "(The Legend of) Miss Baltimore Crabs." After Mama Morton in Chicago, Queen Latifah puts in another brassy turn as Motormouth Maybelle ("Big, Blonde and Beautiful," which is then reprised by Travolta and Pfeiffer). The show's authors, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, have written three new numbers for the movie: the rollicking (and first single) "Ladies' Choice," "New Girl in Town" and "Come So Far." In addition, the CD also includes two tracks that aren't in the film but were in the show: "Cooties," sung by Aimee Allen, and "Mama, I'm a Big Girl Now," sung by all three Tracy Turnblads: Blonsky, Ricki Lake (from the source movie) and Marissa Jaret Winokur (from the original Broadway cast). --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description

The Hairspray soundtrack will feature 17 songs from the film, including three original numbers that were created specifically for the film version of the hit Broadway musical - "Ladies' Choice," "New Girl In Town," and "Come So Far." Also featured on the soundtrack are the songs "Good Morning Baltimore," "Welcome to the `60s," "Nicest Kids In Town," and "You Can't Stop The Beat." The songs are performed by cast members John Travolta, Queen Latifah, Michelle Pfeiffer, Zac Efron, Amanda Bynes, Brittany Snow and Elijah Kelley among others.

The Hairspray soundtrack is produced by Marc Shaiman and features music by Shaiman and lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman. It features tracks mixed by Ed Cherney (Rolling Stones, Bette Midler) and Peter Mokran (Pussycat Dolls, Christina Aguilera).

Sixteen years after the release of the original film, New Line Cinema is bringing a feature film adaptation of the Tony Award-winning Broadway production of Hairspray to life. Featuring new and original material based on John Waters' 1988 cult classic about star-struck teenagers on a local Baltimore dance show, the comedy features a remarkable collection of talent including John Travolta, Queen Latifah, Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken, Amanda Bynes, Allison Janney, Brittany Snow, Zac Efron, Elijah Kelley, producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron (Chicago), and director Adam Shankman (Bringing Down The House). The new screenplay for Hairspray was written by Leslie Dixon (Freaky Friday, Outrageous Fortune).

5 out of 5 stars The legacy continues.......2007-08-07

Whatever slight problems I have with this cinematic adaptation of the show, they are not reflected in the excellent soundtrack. I don't think there's been any musical soundtrack as much fun and catchy since "Grease" nearly thirty years ago. (Sorry, "Grease 2" fans, if there are any.) The orchestrations, pitch, vocals - everything is right on target. (Though there were a few times I was afraid John Travolta would lose his voice...) Nikki Blonsky does a wonderful job as Tracy Turnblad, and there can't be enough said about Queen Latifah's vocals. Zac Efron and Elijah Kelley also do great work. I thought I was starting to get over the "get off your butt and dance" feeling, but I must say this proved me wrong.

As for the "Grease" and "Grease 2" connection, how fun is it that we now have Travolta and Pfeiffer facing off in the same movie musical? Pfeiffer can finally put to rest the demons of "Cool Rider" as she more than acquits herself with her great version of "Miss Baltimore Crabs."

The new songs for the movie, including "New Girl in Town" and "Come So Far" are great, and while "Mama, I'm a Big Girl Now" was cut, the version here with the Three Tracy's: Blonsky, Winokur and the inimitable Ricki Lake, more than makes up for its absence from the main action of the film. This soundtrack is one of the best antidotes for the long, hot summer.

5 out of 5 stars Hairspray Soundtrack.......2007-08-06

Bought it for my daughters birthday, loves it, loves the film and hopes next year to produce it at our Local Drama Company. Brillant music.

5 out of 5 stars A real "FEEL GOOD" movie/soundtrack.......2007-08-04

I love movies....for a variety of reasons, sometimes for their throught-provoking abilities, innovation, story...and while "Hairspray" isn't one of those, I must say I haven't seen a movie that made me FEEL GOOD and energetic and just HAPPY in a very long time!! It's one I could watch over and over... and the soundtrack.. it's number one on my playlist right now! It will have you dancing in your seat!

4 out of 5 stars Really fun.......2007-08-01

This is good music with good singing. Not necessarily great singing. These songs are catchy and if you liked the movie you will enjoy having the music to sing all too!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully fun.......2007-08-01

After seeing the movie my sister and I ran out to buy the soundtrack. It's excellent. the vocal talent they've managed to put together is amazing. Nikki Blonsky is fantastic and her enthusiasm can't be contained. Zac Efron finally gets to redeem himself after not having his vocals used in High School Musical. "Ladies' Choice" is really fun and upbeat. I can't say enough good things about Queen Latifah.

In my opinion Elijah Kelly is the best though. What a great find. "Run and Tell That" showcases his enormous talent.

The cd is great for singing along to and for making you feel good.

The Pirate Queen, with a score by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg (Les Misérables, Miss Saigon), took a critical beating when it opened on Broadway, but as this catchy cast recording demonstrates, that reception was really unnecessarily harsh. Set in the 17th century, the show (which closed after only 85 performances) tells the story of Grace O'Malley (Stephanie J. Block), an Irish ship captain and pirate who defied Queen Elizabeth I (Linda Balgord). The combination of that setting with the fact that the producers also brought us Riverdance means an overall Celtic flavor. But fans of Boublil and Schönberg should not fear. The duo delivers plenty of the over-the-top, super-emotional power ballads they're famous for--it's hard not to wonder what Celine Dion would make of songs such as "Woman" or "I'll Be There" (the latter sung by a man, but no matter!). Special kudos to Balgord, whose deliciously campy stage portrayal of Elizabeth I comes across well on "The Waking of the Queen," "The Role of the Queen," and two harpsichord-driven, vibrato-laden duets with Block, "She Who Has All" and "Woman to Woman." Also of note to fans of traditional singing is the participation of Áine Uí Cheallaigh (known from Riverdance) on several tracks. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

4 out of 5 stars Boublil & Schonberg's Newest Creation.......2007-08-03

How do you follow such internationally sucessful shows like Les Miserables and Miss Saigon? Well, with Martin Guerre of course. Sadly that particular show, despite being re-written and relaunched a couple of times failed to be the success it was hoped. Now, I really liked that show, especially before it was revamped BUT it just wasn't to be. So we now have Boublil & Schonberg's latest offering with The Pirate Queen. I think that if you liked the previous three scores you can't fail to enjoy this new show. It certainly has some great "show stoppers", some wonderful "duets" and exciting dance interludes. Whereas in Martin Guerre we had the more authentic and rustic villagers dancing we now have a more Riverdance and Celtic feel in line with the Irish story and links. In fairness there is feeling of having heard it before and some themes do seem reminiscent of the previous shows BUT isn't that true of other successful composers?

Overall, a worthwhile addition to your collection if not up to the Les Miz and Saigon standards. Having played it several times now it certainly improves each time you hear it. I am very happy to recommend this recording especially now that the show has finished and we may not have the chance of seeing it again....... who knows? Watch this space though!

4 out of 5 stars NOT THE BEST, BUT STILL BRILLIANT.......2007-08-02

I read the reviews before purchasing this CD, and seeing as they were so mixed, I decided to just get it and see for myself after listening to samples of the tracks.

I was really glad I did. I have a keen musical ear and a discriminatory musical palate, and I'm usually pretty good at judging things by their covers (even though I know I shouldn't). I was utterly pleased with this musical after listening to it twice. It gets four stars for not blowing me away like some musicals can on the first listening (Les Miserables is a great example). But the point is that it gets all of those four stars.

Irish/Celtic music usually begins to irritate me after I listen to it for a while. It's nice, it's pleasant, but it's not my cup of Earl Grey tea. But the blend of Schonberg's and Boubil's distinct style of musical (made popular by their other work) with the more natural/historical sound of Great Britain blends well. I feel that if this musical had not appeared on Broadway with all the hype surrounding Pirates of the Caribbean releasing it's third installment, that this musical would have garnered more respect, instead of the mass populace thinking, as I believe, "oh, another pirate thing." I am sad that I get the chance to go to see a show in late September in NYC, and this one's already gone - the only one I really want to see.

The money's worth it for a few of the tracks by themselves. Namely, "Woman", "I Dismiss You", "Surrender", and surprisingly, the "Entr'acte". Others have stated in their reviews that they don't like "Boys'll Be Boys" as it's so utterly expected in the tradition of a "Master of the House" song. You know what? Who cares. I think "Boys'll be Boys" as well as "Rah-Rah, Tip-Top" are entertaining for the ears, and every musical has its form of comic relief - though I must say, both songs are dark comedy focusing around characters who are chauvinists. I haven't yet got that spin on Thenardier, as despicable and delightful as he was in Les Miserables. Though initially it's hard to understand some of the Queen's pieces, the feeling of the absolute monarch comes cleanly through, and the harpsichord background is not cliche. It's perfect in those pieces.

I urge other people who are considering buying this to check out these reviews, but judge it for yourselves, and don't start listening to it with expectations. Rather, just sit back and enjoy the show.

5 out of 5 stars Broadway not Chicago.......2007-07-31

This album is good. If you saw the Original production, Pre-Broadway in Chicago, you will notice the differences that the show acquired for its Broadway production. It is a good representation of a show that appears to have lost its luster when moving from the Windy City to the Big Apple. My kids I I listen to the album over and over and cannot get enough of it.

5 out of 5 stars CLASSIC MUSICAL.......2007-07-30

An excellent recording of the Broadway production. This show has a strong storyline and the music is superb! Having seen the show in New York the week before it closed, I really can't understand why this wasn't another long-runner for Boublil and Schonberg. It was a disgrace that it didn't receive any Tony award nominations. At least, we have this recording to savour of a classic musical, which hopefully will have a future in the UK.

5 out of 5 stars Unsinkable Pirate Queen.......2007-07-30

If you're on the fence about whether music from American Idol alumnus Constantine Maroulis is worth your time, consulting the cover art could help. Those who swooned over his dark good looks in 2005 will be swayed again instantly. And in the end, that won't be a bad thing. Constantine, the former contestant's first solo album (fans will note that Pray for the Soul of Betty, a 2005 release, was the work of a band to which Constantine contributed vocals prior to his TV turn) rocks hard, rejects infantile songwriting, and leaves no room for duds--each of its 12 tracks surprises with a maturity you wouldn't necessarily expect from a guy who got his big break on TV. The opening piano plinks of "Girl Like You" give way to a Santana-esque romp, "Everybody Loves" brings out the Freddy Mercury in Maroulis' likable if not overly pliant voice, and "Sister, Sister"--one of a few numbers co-written by Maroulis--steals hearts with a sharp turn away from the predictable; here's a song about sibling love from an artist who some would expect to focus on lusty joints. Constantine's producers play it straight and don't get overly fancy, but that's not to say the disc is without flourishes. The sizzle Constantine normally reserves for the camera slips directly into these songs. --Tammy La Gorce

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Worth the Wait!.......2007-08-08

Constantine Maroulis' debut album, a product of his own label, primarily showcases his stellar vocals. Featuring many different genres and styles, this album truly has something on it for everybody. Literally recorded in a living room, you feel as if the songs are sung live.

The tracks that truly shine: Fading into You- a beautiful song with great lyrics, Midnight Radio- from the off Broadway musical "Hedwig and the Angry Inch", Favorite T-shirt- a snarky but oh-so soothing end to a relastionship song, and I Thought it was Something- a bouncy, classic-rockish, song that just makes you feel happy.

5 out of 5 stars Cd For Everyone.......2007-08-08

This is a Cd for everyone. Constantine has a very unique voice. Each song is quite different from rock, pop, to love songs. It's definately worth the two year wait. I love every song, but my favorites are So Long, Favorite T-shirt, Child you're the Revolution. I'm so happy and proud to be a huge fan of Constantine's. This Cd is amazing!!!!

5 out of 5 stars My Verdict on Constantine!.......2007-08-08

I have been a fan of Constantine Maroulis from the first time I saw him sing on American Idol. Don't let this American Idol contestant fool you. He is a diverse and talented artist. I love every single song on this CD, each one is performed in his own unique style. This long awaited debut release shows off his emotional depth, a great voice, and great material. Constantine is not just a AI alumni he is the real deal in a musical landscape occupied by way too many phoneys. If you're not already a Constantine Fan, do yourself a favor and give his new CD a listen.

My Verdict: It's a MUST BUY! You will NOT be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Constantine's CD Rocks.......2007-08-07

This CD was well worth the 2 year wait. Unlike other American Idols he did not want to rush out a CD before finding the right mix. When he hitched up with Producers Marc Copley and Jim Boggia magic was created. The blend of all their creative talents is what makes this CD so special. It appeals to a broad range of people and is very radio friendly. It has bit of Pop and Rock as well as a couple beautiful ballads. I am amazed at the clarity of the sound on this CD while at the same time it has a very authentic raw edge to it. If you loved Constantine on American Idol, you will love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME LIVE SOUND.......2007-08-07

It's been a long time since I've heard a CD with a great live sound like this one. No gimmicks trying to make the vocals acceptable - just Constantine's beautiful tenor backed by haunting instrumentals - the same great sound I've heard in his live shows. This is a versatile mix of goodies spanning several genres, and showcasing his skills and musical creativity. A beautiful compilation and one that will keep me interested for a very long time. The "skip" button on my CD player will be lonely. This is a work of pure art. Congratulations for knowing who you are, what you want to achieve, and staying true to yourself.

Queen brought a whole new meaning to the phrase over the top. While rock & roll flamboyance stretched back at least as far as Little Richard, Freddie Mercury continued to camp it up, taking little seriously and smirking at the music's growing pretensions while partaking in them no small bit. Many of the band's singles hold up extremely well, later tracks such as "Hammer to Fall" as much as prime-era numbers such as "Bohemian Rhapsody," "Killer Queen," and "You're My Best Friend." The quartet's canny sense of melody and sophisticated vocal harmonies--not to mention Mercury's raised eyebrow--have traveled well through the years. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Queen Greatest Hits.......2007-07-16

I really started to like Queen recently. Bohemian rhapsody is such a great song and really gets you moving. My husband likes running to this music. I am still getting used to some of the other songs, but I really like this CD. Whenever I listen to We Are the Champions, I think of the episode of Cheers when all of the bar boys pounded on the bar to this song. It's fun. As always, Amazon seems to have the best prices. I don't have to pay shipping or tax and save an additional dollar or two on top of that.

This creation is one remarkable piece of history! I'm so thankful I got it, and for such a nice price you get almost 40 songs! With their incorporation of piano and Freddie Mercury's voice, and their guitarist- this thing just blows out your ears in amazement. I had heard so many of these songs on the radio, but who knew they did all of them? Bicycle Race first annoyed me with so much repitition, but with my love for bike-riding, it's become a motto for me to. Killer Queen is just WOWZERs... so sexy and loaded. And there's tons more, but I'll save those as super surpise you'll be glad you got!

5 out of 5 stars Best Double Box Set Ever.......2007-05-09

What can I say?!!?
Queen was the best - the songs are brilliant and theatrical.
Freddy M. will be forever one of the best performers - EVER.

Put together by Abba's own Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! manages to cram over 20 of the Swedish supergroup's songs into a threadbare plot. It goes a little like this: Young Sophie is getting married and she's trying to identify which of three men is her father. That's about it. Wisely, the musical doesn't mess around with the songs, save for the insertion of some dialogue or for having some of them performed by a man (it works amazingly well). Abba fans will jump on this import of the London production, but traditional fans of musical theater should consider it as well. After all, Andersson and Ulvaeus's songs have always felt as if they were more than isolated pop gems and actually belonged to a longer narrative. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

I have not stopped playing this cd. It is just great! It makes any trip in my car most enjoyable Happy I bought it!

5 out of 5 stars Mamma Mia Musical CD.......2007-03-21

This is a grand list of songs from the original musical when it was first introduced in England. The songs from ABBA are very recognizable even if you haven't seen the show. But, making a trip to NY to see the Broadway production is a plus. ENJOY!

4 out of 5 stars JUST GREAT MUSIC.......2007-03-08

I RECENTLY SAW THE SHOW MAMMA MIA IN LAS VEGAS. ALWAYS LIKES THE MUSIC OF ABBA, AND THOUGH THE PLOT WAS THIN, THE MUSIC WAS WELL PERFORMED. IN THIS PARTICULAR ALBUM, THE ENGLISH ACCENTS WERE A BIT MUCH, BUT THE SONGS WERE GREAT. ALL I CAN SAY IS THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC, ABBA.

5 out of 5 stars Mamma Mia.......2007-01-29

Every time I hear the music and songs it brings back memories of seeing the Broadway Show

1 out of 5 stars Not good at all.......2007-01-09

This is not what we wanted. The British accents throw it was off. We just saw it in NY and this is not what we were looking for.

Queen brought a whole new meaning to the phrase over the top. While rock & roll flamboyance stretched back at least as far as Little Richard, Freddie Mercury continued to camp it up, taking little seriously and smirking at the music's growing pretensions while partaking in them no small bit. Many of the band's singles hold up extremely well, such as "Killer Queen" and "You're My Best Friend". The quartet's canny sense of melody and sophisticated vocal harmonies--not to mention Mercury's raised eyebrow--have traveled well through the years. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars fine collection of just some of the best of Queen..........2007-08-04

Queen was a remarkably prolific band; and they put out records that made people listen! Their brand of rock and roll was all their own: not just over the top but seriously dramatic when it was necessary. This CD gives us just some of Queen's greatest hits.

The CD track set begins with the famous ballad "We Will Rock You." The beat is low and firm; Freddy Mercury's voice is perfect to sing this song about a mixture of teenage angst and tentative hopefulness for the future. The chorus works wonders for this number which rocks REALLY hard! The electric guitars at the end make this number even better still! Of course, the track ends and goes immediately into "We Are The Champions." Often used as an anthem by sports teams and listened to repeatedly by people who felt they were underdogs alike, "We Are The Champions" sports a poignant melody as the lyrics foretell of inevitable success in life. Awesome introductory numbers for this album!

"Another One Bites The Dust" gives us a rather dark number about the perils of life--not just death but unrequited love, angst, loneliness and inescapable sorrow--not to mention revenge. "Another One Bites The Dust" sports a great rockin' beat and Freddy sings this at his very best! "Killer Queen" sports a beautiful melody that molds together rock and some instruments that sound as if they come from another century long gone! "Killer Queen" explores the life of a woman who hurts her men without caring about their feelings. Awesome! The electric guitars fit in perfectly, too.

"Somebody To Love" begins with a gospel sounding chorus and when the band and Freddy kick in this number takes flight! The backup vocals enhance this number and "Somebody To Love" really rocks hard! This is one ballad that truly explores the feelings a man has when he needs a woman to be his one true love. Excellent! The ending crescendo makes this number shine all the more, too.

"Fat Bottomed Girls" starts off sounding like a country ballad--until the band kicks in with their electric guitars to show the true nature of this track! Freddy and the band give a salute to their big bottomed ladies with this number; and the guitars never miss a beat.

"You're My Best Friend" may be one Queen hit that many, many people have heard in public places where there music plays. This classic rock ballad deals with the joy Freddy's character feels for his one true love; his woman is also his best friend. "You're My Best Friend" gives us a joyous number that celebrates the never ending happiness of true love. "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" sports a great beat and the hand clapping sounds enhance the number, too. "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" deals with the feelings people have when they are in love. Perfect!

"Seven Seas Of Rhye" begins with a great musical flourish; and Freddy sings this to perfection! The guitars are great on "Seven Seas Of Rhye" and this is one song you'll want to listen to over and over again. Good percussion, too. "Don't Stop Me Now" features Freddy singing and playing piano for a touching number about a man who wants to take the night off to celebrate his good fortune in life. When Freddy sings "there's no stopping me," you really believe him! SMILE

"Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy" gives us a number for which Freddy and the band sing of a man who wants to woo his woman using old fashioned romantic technique. The piano works wonders for this number and the melody glistens like gold! Wow!

The liner notes include great color photos of Queen over the years and you learn which songs came from which albums.

Some reviewers note that this album doesn't have all of Queen's greatest hits. For example, "Bohemian Rhapsody" is not on this CD. Huge Queen fans will want to purchase Greatest Hits, part 2 and other Queen retrospective CDs as well.

Queen remains a strong force in the music industry despite the passage of time. Their CDs sell well to this day; and aspiring rock artists would do well to study their artistry. Get this album and enjoy it today!

4 out of 5 stars Queen Greatest hits.......2007-07-12

This CD is is great especially if you are a Queen fan. It truly is a collection Of their greatest hits.

5 out of 5 stars Queen is Amazing!.......2007-05-23

This CD was my first exposure to Queen. As is evident on this album, this band is absolutely overflowing with talent. Freddie Mercury is a genius, singing his heart out on every single one of these tracks. It's hard to pick and choose, but I would have to say that the standout tracks for me are:

"Somebody to Love": A huge, sprawling song with absolutely mesmorizing vocals from Freddie Mercury and amazing harmonies.
"Fat Bottom Girls": A classic hard rock tune with gorgeous harmonies and great guitar lines.
"You're My Best Friend": A smooth, cool, beautiful, and underrated love song.
"Seven Seas of Rhye": I love the piano on this song, and the classic hard rock feel.
"Don't Stop Me Now": A classic adrenaline-rush of a song.

I love this CD. You should get it if you like Queen. It's very cohesive. And if you don't really know Queen that well, it's a great sampler of their music. There is one problem. "Bohemian Rhapsody" is my favorite Queen song, and its absence on this album irks me quite a bit. That being said, I would download it individually before I would actually buy another album with it.

5 out of 5 stars THE QUEEN LEGEND CONTINUES WITH VOLUME II. PART 2 OF 2........2007-05-09

Before I begin my review, I would like to invite everyone that are hardcore diehard Rock n' Roll fans to read the website that Kevin Johns and I have set up for all of you. It is called "FOREVER IN ROCK, THE JOHN LOPEZ REVIEWS WRAP UP." Just log in www foreverinrock blogspot com/. I deeply hope that all of you will read it, take part in it and display what your true musical needs and tastes are. I hope to hear from all of you soon. Forever in Rock, John L.

I will be writing a review on the legendary compilation album entitled "QUEEN - GREATEST HITS - VOLUME II" by one of Rock's all-time greatest bands ever. I give you one of England's pride and joy's and one of Britain's favorite sons, Q-U-E-E-N! "QUEEN - GREATEST HITS - VOLUME II" was originally released in 1992 on Compact Disc on the Hollywood Records label which is distributed by Elektra Entertainment, a division of Warner Communications Inc. This review is Part 2 of 2. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the overall best informative and most accurate review possible.

QUEEN will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for writing and recording some of Rock's most legendary all-time greatest sacred classic anthems ever. QUEEN will also be remembered for delivering one of Rock's most flamboyant and charismatic lead singer's / frontmen ever. Of course I'm speaking of the late great Farrokh Bulsara, also known the world over as Freddie Mercury. When Mercury met up and joined forces with rhythm and lead guitarist Brian May, bassist John Deacon and drummer Roger Taylor, the stage was set and QUEEN would set out to conquer the world. QUENN would write and record many great albums and hit songs throughout the band's whole entire career to highly critically acclaim. Like volume I, "QUEEN - GREATEST HITS - VOLUME II" would be the result of the many great hit songs that QUEEN would record throughout their entire career. Also like volume I, the album, "QUEEN - GREATEST HITS - VOLUME II" would also serve as proof, of one of the many great contributions, accomplishments and achievements that QUEEN would give to Rock n' Roll. Also without a doubt, in my opinion, like volume I, "QUEEN - GREATEST HITS - VOLUME II" also stands as a true testament of the sheer genius and musical creativity of four extremely talented individuals. "QUEEN - GREATEST HITS - VOLUME II" is also a fine fitting tribute to a great legendary band that was truly indeed, far ahead of their time.

It is now time to let the Rock n' Roll music of QUEEN to speak for itself and back it up by doing all of the talking musically. "QUEEN - GREATEST HITS - VOLUME II" from 1992 picks up right where VOLUME I left off and begins with the forever slow blistering QUEEN trademark Rock anthem that could be heard in stadiums during sports events the world over, "We Will Rock You," this slow Rocker will then develop into the beautifully slow hard Rock anthem "We Are The Champions," the merciless killer Rocker "Another One Bites The Dust," the forever Opera hard Rocker "Killer Queen," one of the most beautiful slow Rock anthems ever, "Somebody To Love," the hard Rock anthem for beautiful overweight women the world over, "Fat Bottom Girls," the amazing Opera Rock anthem "Bicycle Race," the forever beautifully slow QUEEN trademark Rock anthem "You're My Best Friend," the forever 50's like Rock anthem that would have made ELVIS PRESLEY proud, "Crazy Little Thing Called Love," (READY FREDDIE!) the breathtaking a*s kicking hard Rocker "Now I'm Here," the mysterious groundbreaking special effects Rock anthem with an incredible falsetto voice arrangement by Freddie Mercury, "Play The Game," the fantastc killer hard Rocker "Seven Seas Of Rhye," the forever bass pumping synthesized Rocker "Body Language," the beautifully slow electric acoustic Rocker "Save Me," the fast paced and energetic hard Rocker "Don't Stop Me Now," the incredible Opera Rocker "Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy" and the forever danceable synthesized Rocker "I Want To Break Free." Again, like VOLUME I, may I also add that the blistering lead vocals and breathtaking falsetto vocal arrangements by Freddie Mercury was PERFECT and on the mark while laying down the tracks for all of these legendary hit songs. I would also like to commend Brian May for his merciless guitar riffs and licks throughout all of the recordings of these legendary hit songs. I would also like to commend QUEEN'S legendary rhythm section comprising of bassist John Deacon and drummer Roger Taylor. Their combined perfect harmony sound effort contributed in elevating both Freddie Mercury's blistering lead vocals and Brian May's merciless guitar arrangements to another level unimagined by anyone.

Overall, this is one hell of a compilation album worth checking out and seeking further research and information into especially if you are a hardcore diehard QUEEN fan or a devout music collector. As for all of the curious newcomers and new beginners that are not quite familiar with the sound and music of QUEEN, along with VOLUME I, this is not a bad compilation album or two volume album collection to start off with. Either way you choose, you will have taken a giant step in owning and starting your very own personal QUEEN music collection. You can do all of your researching and album purchases either on Amazon com or at your nearest local Borders Books and Music store. If you ever get a chance, buy both volume albums, you'll be happy and satisfied that you did.

Like VOLUME I, I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary compilation album(s) to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. Without a doubt, this legendary treasure album(s) has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. This is one great priceles gem that no hardcore music fan or devout music collector would want to be without.

In closing, Freddie Mercury's untimely death on 24 November 1991 would close the book on one of Rock's greatest chapters and one of Rock's all-time greatest bands ever. OR SO IT SEEMED. The QUEEN legend and legacy is far from being over. As we speak, QUEEN has been touring with former FREE'S, BAD COMPANY'S and THE FIRM'S lead singer and frontman Paul Rodgers to highly critically acclaim. In my opinion, despite Freddie Mercury being irreplaceable, QUEEN'S only chance of carrying on with someone else that is close to Freddie Mercury's talent is with none other than George Michael. When I heard George Michael sing with QUEEN on stage at the Freddie Mercury tribute concert, Michael is the only lead singer and frontman alive today that is capable of filling in the empty shoes left vacant by the late great Freddie Mercury. I'm really surprised that QUEEN didn't snatch up George Michael right away. I HOPE QUEEN IS READING THIS! As years have gone by, the contributions, accomplishments and achievements that QUEEN has made throughout Rock n' Roll history speaks for itself. In 2001, QUEEN would meet their date with destiny by receiving the highest ultimate honor possible, by being inducted as members of the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame. With this in mind, QUEEN will forever leave their place and mark in Rock n' Roll history and will never be forgotten. There will also be new stories in the QUEEN legend and legacy that will still need to be told and written. But that, my fellow readers and reviewers, you will just have to stay tuned and glued to your computer and read further more about it at a later date in the near future. So here's to you late great Freddie, Brian, John, Roger and yes, you too Paul and George. Thanks for the many great memories. Keep The faith. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more or am I wrong? FREDDIE MERCURY LIVES! Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have truly enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also deeply hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. QUEEN FOREVER! R.I.P. FARROKH BULSARA A.K.A. FREDDIE MERCURY, Born 5 September 1946, Died 24 November 1991 at age 45. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.

To open this oddball supergroup's debut, Paul Simonon hints at "Guns of Brixton," and when Tony Allen's flex rhythms come in, there's a shadow of Fela Kuti, too. Then Damon Albarn's slow grit of a voice enters--framed by Simon Tong's flecked guitar. And collectively, The Good, the Bad, & the Queen is quickly sui generis, adamantly different than anything you think you've heard. A band with this much power has at least two options: to cut loose raucously or to mute their overt power for a more covert, dub-inflected atmospheric potency. Smartly, Albarn and his crew opt for the half-light of elastic bass lines, the clouds between the parentheses of drums--the covert. It's not until "Kingdom of Doom," the erstwhile 'single' of the album, that motion expands beyond the languorous. And even then, Tony Allen largely sits out. You get the full flush of Simonon and Allen on "Three Changes" shuffling time even while holding the tempo to a dubbish gait. It's not Blur, the Clash, Fela, the Verve, or Gorillaz. It's more than just names on albums. --Andrew Bartlett

Album Description

Standard UK pressing of the debut album from Britpop supergroup The Good, The Bad And The Queen. TGTBTQ is a new album featuring Damon Albarn (Blur/Gorillaz), Paul Simonon (The Clash), Tony Allen (Africa 70/Fela Kuti) and Simon Tong (The Verve). The Good, The Bad and The Queen began life in the Aphrodisia Studios in Nigeria in 2004 and traces a journey from the English music hall tradition, over to West Africa for Afrobeat, zigzagging through the West Indies and its reggae and dub, back to England and London's punk scene, all the while taking in a strand of British beat music from the '50s right through to Britpop. Produced by Brian `Danger Mouse' Burton. EMI. 2007

Album Details

This Project Began in 2004 When Damon Albarn and Simon Tong Travelled to Nigeria to Record with Afrobeat Pioneer Tony Allen. Much Later, Albarn Gave the Tapes to Producer Brian "Danger Mouse" Burton and his Attitude Changed, Feeling Like He Would Just Write the Songs but Not Sing. Danger Mouse Helped Gel the Project and Albarn Just Wanted to Write Tales of West London. The Final Collaborator was Clash Bassist Paul Simonon, Whose Presence Changed the Whole Dynamic. The Result is a Record that Traces a Journey from the English Music Hall Tradition Over to West Africa for Afrobeat, Zigzagging Through the West Indies and Its Reggae and Dub, Back to England and London's Punk Scene, all the While Taking in a Strand of British Beat Music from the '50s Right Through to Britpop. A Very English Record, the Title Refers to a Saying in the Area that is Another Way of Saying "This is About Today, this is About the Present". A Heartfelt Tribute to London.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Herculean effort!!!.......2007-07-13

Damon Albarn's latest project is sonically different from his last, Gorillaz, but still edgy and experimental. "The good, the bad, and the queen" reminds me of the last Blur CD "Think tank", with a smattering of Radiohead thrown in; a calm, beautiful sound with loads of piano, melodic guitars, and gently cascading harmonies.

The group comprises Albarn, Tony Allen (who used to drum with Fela Kuti), Simon Tong, and Paul Simonon. The CD made #2 in the UK.

The disc has a variety of sounds; Soothing Beach boys harmonies over delicate guitars and piano (the stunning "80s life" - a favourite of mine), piano driven eerie Radiohead-like ("Kingdom of doom", "The bunting song"), awash in strings and echoey guitars ("Behind the sun"), lilting percussion and dreamy harmonies ("Nature springs", "Three changes"), which perfectly complement each other.

Other standouts are "A soldier's tale" (lovely harmonies and guitar work), the tender acoustic folk-like "Green fields" (another favourite of mine"), and the majestic piano driven seven minute epic "The good, the bad, and the queen" (it becomes an exciting jam fest about halfway through) which closes the CD.

Definitely one of the best CDs to come out this year.

4 out of 5 stars Like a laid back Gorillaz album.......2007-06-27

If you like the Gorillaz albums, you will most likely appreciate what the band is trying to do with this record. It's a crowning achievement in experimental music and one of the best albums so far in 2007.

1 out of 5 stars Booooooooooring.......2007-06-09

I was really hoping this would be good. Dude from Blur has been on a creative streak and now he's making and album with the bass play from the clash and Fela Kuti's drummer. But alas, it sounds like the boring, moody, skip-over tracks on previous Blur albums. (Think "Death of the Party.") Some folks may really be into that stuff though. If you're one of them you'd probably like this. All I know is played this album aloud ONE TIME at work and four people told me to turn it off. (Shrug of shoulders, upturned palms and protruding upper lip.)

4 out of 5 stars Does anything bad EVER come out of England?.......2007-05-19

This is a very experimental cd, and NOT the Gorillaz. That being said, it is a very good album. Alburn has one of those voices that just draws you in, and this is no exception. It almost sounds like a soundtrack to events that haven't happened, what I mean by that is, it really paints a picture about what the music is about. I'm proud to have this in my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Weird...but awesome!.......2007-05-17

If you are a Gorillaz fan and like that strange, yet awesome sound that they produce you will like the Good, the Bad, and the Queen. Although they aren't exactly like them, they are along the right track. If you are looking for music along the lines of Blur, this is not the CD for you, just because they were formed by Damon Albarn, doesn't mean that they are Blur. Also, don't expect it to be a Clash CD... Paul Simonom, does play good bass, but doesn't imitate the Clash.

"Fat Bottom Girls, You Make the Rocking World Go Round "-- seems like Queen knows me personally!! Terrific CD - lot's of wonderful creative songs. These guys were WAYYYYY ahead of their time. Wish the world was the same now as it was back then. There's still a lot of us old rockers out there. You just can't see us because of all our wrinkles. But, seriously, this CD is well worth every penny spent on it. Everyone in the house will be singing along all the way through.

the whimsical Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy (1976)
and hard Rocker Tie your Mother Down (1976)

I would have suggested I'm In Love With My Car (1975) (one of my least favourites) be replaced with Keep Yourself Alive
(1973) or Spread Yor Wings (1977).

What once seemed Queen's greatest liabilities--a preening flamboyance and pompous, overwrought theatricality--have ironically become their most enduring charms in a gray, postmodern pop-music landscape. While it eschews the glammy, pre-punk hard rock of live faves like "Stone Cold Crazy" and "Tie Your Mother Down" for the band's more quirky club-beat string of latter-day hits, this 51-track triple-CD anthology goes a long way toward documenting the true dimensions of the band's music and fame. Some songs may not be instantly familiar to American fans because of yet another irony: just as their U.S. fortunes waned during the punk and new wave era, the band was exploding into true international superstars. Thus, there may be a sense of discovery here, whether of latter-day Queen material or solo work by Brian May and Freddie Mercury, whose duet on "Barcelona" with diva Montserrat Caballé transcends boundaries of both time and genre. A previously unreleased live performance of "The Show Must Go On" featuring Elton John on vocals is also included. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars The ULTIMATE Queen collection!!.......2007-06-19

What more is there to say... the Ultimate Queen collection! This is a great collection of songs and any Queen lover will most certainly love this compliation of recordings.

I recommend that any Queen lover get this!!

4 out of 5 stars Just what I wanted!.......2007-03-29

While this is not the completely definitive collection as some of the purists in other reviews would want, this is exactly what I wanted. I do not have any other Queen recordings and I was looking for a package that contained as much as possible in a single set. I am listening to this almost exclusively in the month since I received it and I am not worn out yet.
If you don't have any Queen and you want to buy just one set, this will cover just about everything. The only reason I don't give it a 5 star rating is the obvious omission of "Tie Your Mother Down" and a couple of recording level issues on a couple of tracks, notably "We will rock you, We are the Champions" which are strangely muted relative to most of the other tracks.

4 out of 5 stars Very good.......2007-02-10

I was kind of skeptical buying this CD set, considering that I already own Classic Queen, but I figured I had nothing to lose but $26. I bought it, and here is my opinion:

Disc 1 has most of the Queen hits that are known to almost every classic rock and Queen fan alike. The only disappointment (in my opinion) on this disc was that the full version of Fat Bottomed Girls was not used.

Disc 2 has most of their other hits. Some notable ones include I Want to Break Free, Under Pressure, The Show Must Go On, Hammer to Fall, and Who Wants to Live Forever, which was edited but the full version can be found on Classic Queen.

Disc 3 is not great, but it's good. It has some songs that shouldn't be there, but the only hits on there are Princes of the Universe, Heaven for Everyone, Thank God It's Christmas, and the Somebody to Love duet with George Michael.

Overall, this was a good CD set. If you are a first-timer or a collector, this is good for you. But it's good for anyone, really.

5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2007-01-16

I was not a big fan of Queen-though I've always liked their music, just never owned any of it. I bought it during the holidays for my kids (6,5,&3)for our car trip to Florida. They LOVED it!! Seriously!! My three yr.old likes the "funny song" -Another One Bites the Dust & can sing it word for word-my 5 yr.old loves Killer Queen & Don't Stop Me Now & just about all the other songs on the CD. I thought they would like it because the Chicken Little movie has We are the Champions & all 3 of them sing it...& I was right.

Nothing succeeds like excess--at least that's the case with Queen's breakthrough classic, A Night at the Opera. On one level, the title is a reference to the band's operatic pretensions, best in evidence here on the classic "Bohemian Rhapsody," which was championed by headbangers a generation before being revived by the Wayne's World set. Of course, A Night at the Opera was also the title of a Marx Brothers movie, and the reference isn't lost on Queen, who seldom scaled the heights of pomprock without a knowing wink. The album is remembered for its meticulously produced bombast, but the truth is that there's a wide variety of material here, from the gorgeous piano-based "You're My Best Friend" and the McCartneyesque "39" to the music-hall-style "Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon" and the pedal-to-the-metal rockers "Death on Two Legs" and "I'm in Love with My Car." A Night at the Opera is viewed by most as the quintessential Queen album, and justifiably so. --Daniel Durchholz

5 out of 5 stars After Such An Exceptional Third Album (Sheer Heart Attack) , Could It Possibly Get Any Better?.......2007-08-05

In the case of a fews songs, the answer is "Yes", but this may have been the peak of Queen's artistic endeavors. Synthesizers were never used at this point and this was on purpose to keep things sounding as natural as possible. There would be one more album in this line of great albums which was 1976's "A Day At The Races" (an album which would be the last to exclude synthesizers). Their commercial success would still continue but the artistic purity would have to suffer a little bit. So here is what I think of "A night At the Opera"....The CD starts out with "Death On Two Legs"; a special dedication to a one time "slave driver" who has since been kissed off. It contains a sound reminiscent of the Jaws movie soundtrack. "Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon" was heard next and is another composition (in addition to the opening song) written by the late lead singer Freddie Mercury. It is very short and has a roaring 20s style to it. "I'm In Love With My Car" (by drummer Roger Taylor) comes next along with some awesome automotive sound effects. The song contrasts the love of a good car to the love of a particularly nagging girlfriend. "You're My Best Friend" came next. This composition from bassist: John Deacon was the second top 10 release from "A Night At The Opera" and it's no coincidence that it turned out to be my favorite song from the summer of '76 (it's just that good of a song). The next two tracks were Brian May compositions known as '39 and "Sweet Lady". "Sweet Lady" is sung by Freddie and was sung with all his heart and soul as if he had written it himself. Another throwback to the 1st half of the 20th century song by Freddie Mercury was included as the seventh song entitled: "Seaside Rendezvous". This song would end what was once considered half of the show. "The Prophet Song" was the one time opening song to side 2 of the vinyl edition but now it is simply known as track 8 on the CD edition. This is an epic song much like the best known song "Bohemian Rhapsody" (which I'll discuss later) but "The Prophet Song" was actually written by guitarist Brian May. It included vocals though by Freddie that were performed by use of delays which came out as a "round" style of singing. It was a very dynamic song and a preview of what was to come. The next song "Love Of My Life" came after a wonderful segue of Brian's acoustic guitar into Freddie's piano introduction. This song was written by Freddie and has a classical era sound to it. It is a mostly soltly performed love song with harps included. "Good Company", a Brian May song, was next and was akin to Tiny Tim and his ukulele but without the high pitched voice. So we'll move on to the greatest song ever recorded by Queen: "Bohemian Rhapsody" this Freddie Mercury composition is 5 minutes and 55 seconds long and thank goodness they held out and would not resort to editing this song for airplay. It would either be released as it was or not at all. I like that about Queen. There was not much Queen could do to add to such a song as "Bohemian Rhapsody" other than to fade into a performance of their National Anthem "God Save The Queen". And so ends one of the greatest pop/rock album/CDs ever recorded ("One of the greatest pop/rock albums" mainly because of it's inclusion of one of the greatest pop/rock songs ever recorded "Bohemian Rhapsody").

4 out of 5 stars A Night at the Opera is a Classic.......2007-07-30

If you like Queen, this is a great album, especially if you want the song, Bohemian Rhapsody. Many of Queen's greatest hits' album's don't include that song. I bought the record album in the 70's and wanted to upgrade to the CD.

5 out of 5 stars king of queens.......2007-07-29

I'm not a Queen fan because Mercury's style sometimes rubs me the wrong way. Sometimes his vocal range quickly rears off in a completely different direction while singing what appears to be a straight-forward vocal melody, and it's hard for me to adjust to that style. However, I really like A Night at the Opera. Everybody knows "Bohemian Rhapsody". It's been played over and over a million times on classic rock radio. It's been played so many times for a very good reason- it's a great song. Any complaints I might have with Freddy disappear whenever this song comes on. A lot of people mention the rocking section as being their particular favorite moment. I agree!

I really like "39". Very demanding beat to a very pleasant vocal melody. That's what the song is all about. "You're My Best Friend" is another highlight. An innocent, yet highly memorable little tune. "I'm In Love With My Car" always reminded me of Roger Daltrey from the Who. I kept wondering "Why can't I find this lost Who song on a search engine?" It's because the song is by Queen! "Death on Two Legs" is another memorable track that many people probably don't even realize they do in fact know the song, and know it well.

Overall, there's no problems with this album. It's a really solid album.

5 out of 5 stars The album which forever immortalised Queen.......2007-06-16

A Night At The Opera (1975.), Queen's fourth studio album

Throughout their career, Queen would always challenge themselves musically and would create a musical spectacle that would win over millions of fans. The band were especially innovative in their early career; powering out a blistering hard-rocking debut with `Queen I' and experimenting with more progressive ideas in `Queen II'. With their third release, `Sheer Heart Attack', the band got everything together to produce a `70's classic. However, the musical train definitely didn't stop there as a year later Queen released `A Night At The Opera'; an album you just may have heard quite a lot of press about over the past 30 or so years...

...Indeed, as most reviewers for this album will have stated, this is a seminal hard rock classic and in many ways marks a creative peak in the great career which Queen enjoyed. The album, filled with operatic harmonies and memorable tunes has influenced countless other bands down the years and across the genres. At a first listen, this album strikes you as a crazy operatic charade and in many ways it is! Queen here create an album which is based on the theme of an opera performance with all the crazy twists and turns thrown in. However it works brilliantly and is a truly innovative display that also rocks hard (in some parts at least!). An argument I've often heard with this album is that the whole thing is only made coherant by the one song `Bohemian Rhapsody'. Many agree that the song is the centrepiece of the album. However, I would not hesitate to say that a large number of the tracks stand up on their own two feet. Tracks like `Death On Two Legs' and `You're My Best Friend' are timeless classics in their own right. All in all, `A Night At The Opera' is definitive Queen; there is the pomp, excess, craziness and creative genius all fully featured on this disc. The album also marks a continuation of each member of the band contributing their own material. Brian May's compositions make up the more guitar driven works on the album such as `Sweet Lady' whilst Freddie Mercury contributes the more operatic and quirky songs such as `Seaside Rendezvous', `Love Of My Life' and not to mention the all time famous `Bohemian Rhapsody'. Roger Taylor and John Deacon also leave a clear statement on the album too.

`Death On Two Legs' opens this great album. This is one of Queen's best album openers and one of their best songs, period. Written as a cynical tribute to their previous band manager, Freddie Mercury spews venom in the lyrics in an amusing fashion over some great guitar harmonies and melodies from May. The grand piano work, which is synonymous with early Queen is there as well in this blistering opener too. `Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon' is next; a catchy one minute song with some amusing lyrics. There is more piano and overblown guitar lines and as a listener you can feel the operatic stylings in the album building. Then, enter Roger Taylor for `I'm In Love With My Car'. I've always been a big fan of the Roger Taylor songs in the Queen catalogue and this one is no exception. This song rocks hard and Taylor gives a great vocal performance, expressing his love for his car. `You're My Best Friend' is a beautiful song; John Deacon, the quiet man of the band really pulls out the stops in this song of his. A timeless Queen classic, the keyboards work a treat and Freddie Mercury delivers some fantastic emotive vocals. `'39' is an excellent semi-acoustic song about a couple being split up due to the beginning of World War II. `Sweet Lady' is another really cool song. With it's waltz like rocking guitar riff and strong vocals, this is a strong closer to the first half of the album.

`Seaside Rondezvous' keeps the operatic nature of the album going. The song has the excess and hilarity which a number of the tracks on the album exhibit and it again works a treat. `The Prophet's Song' is the epic of the album, clocking in at 8 minutes. Here we see what the sound Queen pioneered is all about, there are vocal harmonies and operatic squeals galore in this one. Although the track is a littel drawn out in parts, there is no denying the significance of this particular song. `Love Of My Life' is a Queen fan favourite; a calm and serene song, Freddie gives another brilliant vocal performance in this excellent ballad. `Good Company' is another amusing song, this time a Brian May composition. May performs the vocals and plays the ukelele to create a unique sounding song which I personally think is great. Next is a track I need not say too much about. `Bohemian Rhapsody' is a track everyone knows, whether you know this album or not - it is 6 minutes of pure craziness and genius. For it's time, it was the most expensive single ever made - the number of vocal layers on this song show this. Following this masterpiece, the album closes with Brian May rockin' out to the tune of `God Save The Queen'. Again we see the opera theme and Queen's joking around it, as operas traditionally had the song played at them after a performance.

`A Night At The Opera' is definitive Queen. If you want a showcase of what Queen is all about then this is the album to get hold of. The vast praise this album has been given over the years is completely deserved and this album is a milestone album in music. `A Night At The Opera' has aged extremely well and as aware as everyone is that this album dates back to '75, it still sounds fresh and lively. This album and it's predecessor `Sheer Heart Attack', for me marked the creative peak for Queen. This album is a must for any rock fans collection or for any fan of great music in general.

MY RATING: 9.5/10

Another versitile recording showing their mastery as muscians and artists. Their hit "You're My Best Friend" is just the tip of the iceburg when it comes to their ability to write just about any kind of music.
