Amazon.com's Best of 2000
Listening to the unbridled grief on Electro-Shock Blues was an unsettling affair, despite the album's beautiful pop-scrim setting. So one listens to Daisies of the Galaxy for the first time with trepidation--like willfully banging on your foot with a ball-peen hammer just for the endorphin rush. But if Blues was about the descent, Daisies is about the ascension toward a fragile health. "I'm feeling pretty good now," E sings on "Grace Kelly Blues." However, the music breaks and quivers with a kind of emotional instability, undermining his assurances. It's a tender balance, and no one registers the sad-happy yin-yang of life with tenderness quite like E. Which in some ways is pretty damned unsettling. --Tod Nelson
Amazon.com
This follow-up to 1998's grief-stricken Electro-Shock Blues finds head Eel E (that's all, just E) on steadier emotional footing, but don't expect cascading rays of sunshine to break through the clouds that cover this Southern California popmeister's world. The tone is set by the imagistic opener, "Grace Kelly Blues," which captures snapshots of misbegotten souls--a mime, a truck driver, a mall rat, the star-crossed movie star/princess who gives the song its name--before focusing in on E himself, who volunteers, "Me, I'm feeling pretty good now ... I think you know I'll be OK." From there, we're immersed in E's own version of Pleasantville, where gorgeous melodies and ornate arrangements adorn sad-sack sentiments. In the end, Daises is the work of a gifted composer/producer/performer who is indeed feeling OK. Not great, mind you. But OK. --Steven Stolder
Customer Reviews:
Eccentric and brilliant.......2007-05-20
The Eels bizarre and indescribable sound is definitely an acquired taste, but "Daisies of the Galaxy" is proof that it's a taste worth acquiring. Even if you've heard the samples and hate them, I'd still recommend buying this album. I can't explain why, exactly, but after a few listens I guarantee you'll believe you got your money's worth.
my favorite eels.......2007-02-16
i love all of the eels recordings, but this is my favorite. Mr. E is one of the very best songwriters on the contemporary scene, with music and lyrics that are creative and heartfelt and sparkle with a sad beauty. my 3 favorite songs of his all happen to be on this cd: "grace kelly blues," "i like birds," and "mr. e's blues." each of these tunes is a masterpiece from a truly original voice. I will end by saying: "get everything you can by eels, but the best place to start is here."
Superb........2006-08-16
An under-rated gem in the Eels catalog. This is my favorite Eels album. Grace Kelly Blues and Daisies Of The Galaxy are two of E's greatest songs. Outstanding.
quality garantee.......2006-03-23
I have never been an anyone's fan but I cannot hide my appreciation for Eels' bandleader Mark Everett. From the start when I listened to "Beautiful Freak" I have always liked his low profile and his great sense of melody following californian tradition. As Brian Wilson did he invented great tunes fullfilling them with both freshness and semplicity, a real hard task - believe me.
The songs are very delicate and sweet. Sometimes melancholic, but mostly exciting especially "Tiger in my tank", "Mr. E's blues" and "Grace Kelly blues", "Flyswatter". Production skills underlines Everett's ability as one of the greatest arranger of our time. The lyrics shows how much bizarre a californian guy can be.
The fifth star is missing because for considering an album a masterpiece widespread approval and success(even not only commercial) is needed and Eels will probably remain a cult band. One of my favorite anyway.
Great lyrics, gorgeous music, higly recommended
God-damn right, its beautiful day.......2005-03-28
One of those intriguing albums that makes you wonder how you missed it when it first came out. Ambitious and clever, full of wry sardonic tunes. Another reviewer described the music as breaking and "quivering with emotional instability," and that sums up the moody melodic tension perfectly.
Despite the sarcastic / bittersweet feel to most of the disc, the final cut "Mr Es Beautiful Blues" is one of the most optimistically melodic post-depressive songs I've ever gotten stuck in my head. God-damn right, its beautiful day.
Bonus: The band's alter ego, MC Honky (http://www.eelstheband.com/honkycontent.html), put out the retro tune "Sonnet no. 3 (Like A Duck)." The video is way beyond amusing. http://www.eelstheband.com/likeaduck.mpeg

must own fusion.......2007-06-06
There are a few groups which actually set the precedent for fusion music; RTF is unqustionably one of those groups.
There are many fantastic musicians and fusion groups and records out there, but Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy captures everything and does it like no other. Intense, seamless progressions, rich meaningfull melodies with a 70's twist.
Absolutely, without a doubt, essential!
Fantastic Jazz Fusion.......2006-12-27
Chick Corea and RtF at their FINEST!
This album is simply superb. Bill Connors adds so much more to this band than Al DiMeola. Al should stick to classical spanish guitar. Meanwhile, the songs transition very well, and each has a very sophisticated flavor and UMPH to it. One of the chief aspects that defines a classic CD is its ability to grow on you with each listen. This album is good for hundreds, if not thousands of spins. Each time you listen variables like mood, atmosphere, company, and others will redefine what makes this album so special.
If you like bands like Weather Report, or can appreciate the bass work of Jaco Pastorius, this CD will make a fine addition to your collection.
tight Album.......2005-12-04
I have always dug me some Return To Forever.while Miles&others got alot of Love for creating Fusions to me Return To Forever were the Ultimate Jazz Fusion Band hands down. Bill Conners Whips the Guitar up on this Album.Lenny white One of the Sickest Drummers Ever.Cat flips the Skins&Creates so many Ryythms&Grooves. Chic Corea One of the Baddest Coldest Keyboard Players Ever. dude got tones&keeps adding as He plays. Stanley Clarke back in the day was a Monster on the Bass. He hit, flipped, tripped&rolled the Bottom like nobody's business. the chord Progresions&Intensity Brought here shows a Group of Musicians who had no limits&expanded there creativity on&on. they were all channeled into One.the next Album with Al Dimeola they continued that transformation&took there Hybrids&Innovations&Made them all one&the same.there Musical Chemistry together to me is still incredible.
Very Innovative for its time.......2005-07-24
I first heard this album while Chick Corea was being interviewed on a New York Jazz Station named WRVR which has been long gone. I was very young and it changed my views of jazz right away. I mean i loved Jazz as a child but it hit me when I heard this. None of my rock idols can match this. They were ripping into space with this album. Wow its nice saying album again. This was part of the new fusion music which was musical yet complicated.
If you were not open minded this was not your music. But it was the beginning of a strong voice in music. It was powerful and very inventive. More so than even many of the fusion music being played today. It was not watered down by any means. A few continnue it today which is very supported. This is a great album and a signiture style that represented the culture of its time.
Death Defying Groundbreaking Fusion!!.......2005-01-22
Another raw, uncompromising fusion classic that still sounds wonderfully fresh now, some 30 years after it was unleashed on an unsuspecting public.
I'm sure this outing dropped some jaws in its day, especially considering that the 2 previous RTF discs (Return to Forever, Light As A Feather) were steeped in airy Brazilian jazz-samba sensibilities. Here, Chick Corea and his trusty bassist Stanley Clarke (just returning to electric bass) would change their whole sound and direction, adding in heavy rock and more orchestrated ensemble playing. An early lineup (which included drummer Steve Gadd, percussionist Mingo Lewis and guitarist Earl Klugh) gave way to the scorching lineup of Corea, Clarke, drummer Lenny White and a young unknown guitarist in the person of Bill Connors. Chick and Stanley's new musings were well served by the 2 new members. Lenny White's drumming combined the best aspects of a great jazz drummer, the ferocious power of a rocker and the funkiness of Clyde Stubblefield (James Brown) or Bernard Purdie. Bill Connors bought to the table a yearning to combine John Coltrane and Cream-period Eric Clapton into a unique musical voice. The new band was NEVER shy about flexing its musical muscles or taking chances right and left.
The opening title cut makes it screamingly clear that this was a band of great musical minds to be reckoned with, highlighted by tight ensemble passages and reckless abandon working together in amazing ways. The song has a very endearing hanging on for dear life quality to it. "After The Cosmic Rain" gives bassist Stanley Clarke a chance to shine with thick fuzzy propulsive bass lines and a nasty, snarly solo, not unlike a more manic Jack Bruce (in fact, Stanley used the same bass as Jack, a Gibson EB-3, famous for its fuzzy somewhat muddy sound. Shortly after these recordings, Stanley would trade it in for the crisp, crackling Alembic sound that would become his stock in trade.)
"Captain Señor Mouse" is a classic Corea musing featuring a manic and beautiful flamenco-inspired melody line and a dizzying variety of time changes, plus crafty use of exaggerated dynamics and tight, passionate ensemble work from everybody. "Theme To The Mothership" by stark contrast is a more open-ended full-throttle piece, giving Bill Connors a chance to unleash a soaring melodic solo, beginning with thick slicing sustained notes and gradually building to a barely controlled fury before miraculously landing right on the next ensemble passage. After this, Corea lets forth a brilliant ring-modulated Fender Rhodes solo that would have been right at home on a Soft Machine or Hatfield and the North disc.
"Space Circus" begins with low-key child-like whimsy before charging into a full-on funk workout, with everybody trading off searing phrases like Muhammad Ali and Joe Frasier in the ring. "The Gamemaker" sneaks up on you with a mysterious series of organ chords and Corea gently musing over the top of it gradually morphing into a repeating keyboard figure that frames the piece that the band picks up on and adds momentum to. From that point, Corea and Connors engage in a duel to the death, beating each other creatively silly as Clarke and White drive it along at a furious pace, leading to a nail-biting unison-passage ending.
This is a disc that will leave you exhausted in a wonderful way, kind of like a good downhill ski run or roller coaster ride. This is tightly played and orchestrated fusion at its boldest, rawest and uncompromising for its time. While subsequent RTF albums were more refined, and guitarist Al DiMeola may have been a superior technician/chopsmeister, Bill Connors just had a raw soulfulness and passionate abandon that DiMeola could never get close to (plus I happen to LOVE that thick, slicing tone of Bill's). The album's raw, in-your-face production just adds to the charm of hearing a new band flexing its musical muscles and breaking new ground.
Absolutely essential!

Customer Reviews:
Two tracks I really like.......2007-07-21
The Mission Impossible theme is performed well.
The Fireball theme is actually much improved on this version. I prefer the orchestra and the vocals over the original.
Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15
As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".
Mediocre.......2006-05-17
The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.
One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06
I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.
Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24
Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

Album Description
Young Galaxy is the creative confluence of kindred spirits, Stephen Ramsay and Catherine McCandless. They formed in Vancouver and moved to Montreal to live and to record their self-titled, debut album. It's an impressive entry point for a group at the beginning of their ascent. Call it a spark in the dry air of a sub-zero city or the child of a love of making music and of making music with the ones they love. Recorded with Jace Lasek (Besnard Lakes) at his Breakglass Studio in the summer of 2005 and spring of 2006, Young Galaxy has borne something concrete of something abstract and ephemeral.
They have found a way back to a musical sensibility before rock was shattered into a thousand different aesthetic compromises. Young Galaxy have landed on the rarest musical alchemy and made of it an instant pop classic.
Customer Reviews:
Has some impressive tracks, but an overall disappointment........2007-06-12
Fronted by ex-Stars member Stephen Ramsay and his significant other Catherine McCandless, Young Galaxy is one of the latest indie acts to come from the consistently amazing Arts & Crafts label. In the band's debut LP, Young Galaxy creates a truly cosmic/spacey sound that lends itself perfectly to their name. While clearly drawing from influences in the classic rock genre, the band also seems to fall into the trap of relying too heavily on what is now an overused and extraordinarily basic indie rock sound. The result is an album that proves the band to be a talented group of individuals, but also one that hasn't quite hit their stride just yet.
Young Galaxy's debut, self-titled LP begins with what is arguably the strongest song on the album, "Swing Your Heartache." The song is an agonizing and bleak meditation on the life, filled with such "uplifting" lyrics as "We believe in time that you will see the frontier is misery." Though the song may falter a bit during the uninspired and cliche-ridden bridge, hearing the band harmonize "Come on babe, swing your heartache" never really gets old, even once the song crosses the 6-minute mark.
"No Matter How Hard You Try" is a largely-incomprehensible song with layer upon layer of instrumentation that at times can seem a bit overpowering. The vocals seem buried under everything else going on, and the song ultimately fails because of it. On the contrary, "Lazy Religion" is almost minimalistic in comparison. The song features airy guitars, synths, and pianos that bring out the vocals. A subtle harmony is utilized throughout the song that's particularly potent when the chorus rolls around ("I don't mind. Take what you want. It's a lazy religion"). The song is another high note for the album.
Unfortunately for Young Galaxy and those who will listen to this album, "Young Galaxy" features more lows than highs. The major flaw of the album is it's lack of "Wow" moments. The lyrics here are rarely poignant or meaningful, the music is utterly bland throughout, often sounding like a mix of every other so-so indie band out there today! I've listened to "Young Galxay" several times through and each time I walk away completely unaffected, unmoved, and entirely disappointed. Young Galaxy has talent, as clearly demonstrated in "Swing Your Heartache" and a few others on the album, but for a band on the Arts & Crafts label, my expectations were not met. "Young Galaxy" is a respectable first effort, but in the end it is still a disappointment.
Recommended for anyone interested in checking out a talented band with a bright future ahead of them, even if this album may contradict such a statement.

1. "Swing Your Heartache"
2. "Lazy Religion"
3. "Sun's Coming Up and My Plane's Going Down"

The Hollywood All-Star Sessions chronicle an important part of Art Pepper's comeback in the late '70s, when the altoist was surmounting years of heroin addiction and imprisonment to play with renewed energy and an impassioned creativity. His Complete Galaxy Recordings from the period have already been collected in a 16-CD set, but Pepper was also recording for the small Japanese label Atlas, appearing as "sideman" on a series of sessions that he usually led in all but name. This five-CD set gathers music from seven LPs recorded between 1979 and 1982, sessions that haven't been issued in the U.S. on CD, and adds two unissued alternate takes and an insightful essay by Laurie Pepper, Art's widow.
The Atlas intention was to recapture the flavor of West Coast jazz of the '50s, and the label matched Peeper with associates and material that would suggest the earlier era. Nominal leaders of the Hollywood All-Stars included West Coast veterans such as trumpeter Jack Sheldon, drummer Shelly Manne, and pianist Pete Jolly, as well as the younger trombonist Bill Watrous, with Pepper himself as the only constant. The material emphasizes standards and jazz tunes from the earlier era, and the group style is suavely relaxed, often with touches of counterpoint. If Pepper's intensity had always marked him as something of an outsider in the cool school, it was also an inspiration: this is small-group modern jazz that's often as lively as it is polished, with Pepper prodding Sheldon, Watrous, and tenor saxophonist Bob Cooper to outdo themselves.
Pepper's ballad playing had a uniquely visceral quality and it often stands out here, especially in a quartet session under pianist Pete Jolly's name, with Pepper unfettered by other horns. There are also meetings with two other giants of modern jazz alto, Sonny Stitt and Lee Konitz. The sessions with Stitt produced two LPs, with the focus strongly on blues and bop. It's spirited music, with Stitt's Parker-like lines contrasting with Pepper's alternately jagged and convoluted phrasing. If Stitt challenged Pepper's competitiveness, then Konitz ignited his imagination. Recorded just five months before Pepper's death, it's an encounter between two of the genuine improvisers, each shaping music anew with every gesture, phrase, and inflection, whether the material at hand is as novel as Konitz's "A Minor Blues in F" or as hackneyed as "Anniversary Song." --Stuart Broomer
Customer Reviews:
A must have for any fan of Art.......2006-03-21
Trust me, the price is worth it for some of the best jazz "showdowns" you will ever hear. The sessions with Stitt (tenor) are worth the price alone. I can't really say anything more than the other reviewers here have not already said, but I just wanted to throw in my two cents.
My tastes are very eclectic, But I can honestly say that these are some of the most fresh jazz improv sessions i have ever heard recorded, even if they are decades old.
So Glad I Picked This One Up!.......2005-11-09
I've only owned this box set for two weeks, but it has already joined the list of my favorite jazz recordings. Historia de un Amor (Disc 2) is one of the most beautiful performances I have ever heard.
A Novice Perspective.......2004-02-02
I write as someone with no background in jazz and only recently determined to give it a chance. Early exposure to fusion and speed-artists turned me off and now at midlife I am determined to mine out some of the nuggets. A few albums appealed at once; Kind of Blue, Jazz Samba, a few others; but nothing has reached out and grabbed me like this album. Simply superb performances and recordings. I can't wait till my own copy arrives.
Maybe he IS Roy Hobbs after all........2003-09-24
As much as I had responded to the emotionalism in Art Pepper's playing, I had never taken very seriously his quote about intending to be no less than "the greatest alto player of all time." Not until now.
These five extraordinary CD's capture the altoist in peak form in five different contexts, each swinging from start to finish and each featuring non-stop light and heat from one of jazz' most creative overachievers. During the middle of "Wee," taken at a torrid tempo on Disc 3, Pepper does something unexpected: he reverts to the conventional, proving he had chops sufficient to outpace the very best Bird disciple of them all. Sonny Stitt is his sparring mate. Pepper has just finished one of his jagged, angular solos, emitting brief bursts of brilliance, taking stabs at the overtone series, leaving shards of crystalized emotions in his choppy wake. Expressive and communicative, but certainly no proof of his command of either the horn or the complex syntax of bebop. Then Stitt follows with smooth, logical and assured Bird-like lines, spitting them out with consummate albeit formulaic ease. Apparently that was enough for Pepper, who takes after Stitt, exhibiting the killer instinct of a competitor who's about to humiliate the rival on the latter's own turf. Pepper's note choices, velocity, articulations, energy, and even fluency are sufficient not only to smoke Sonny but to expose his own former elliptical approach to improvisation as the "ruse" of a creator who under most circumstances will go the extra mile to avoid anything resembling a cliche, a familiar lick, a glib formula.
The man was not only the most moving alto saxophonist of them all but indeed may very well have been the best.

This is the music Harry talks about in "Lost Light." Good Stuff

Customer Reviews:
The penultimate collection ..........2006-12-07
Generally I agree with Strategos in his ecstatic Spotlight Review above. It is a joy to here some of the most memorable themes and cues from some of the most memorable science fiction and fantasy movies (re)recorded in great sound and in lavish (re)orchestrations, played by renowned classical orchestras, namely the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra and the Philharmonia Orchestra, no less.
I have always had a weak spot for (good, or maybe even intelligent) science fiction/fantasy and film music, especially its way of evoking mystery, grandure and wide open spaces. Call it a weakness if you want. But it was maybe really kick started off, for as far as I can remember, with Star Trek. But especially Star Trek II, III and IV - essentially a trilogy - because of their very romantic but very warm, human core, set on the broadest canvasses of unlimited and mysterious outer space. But then there was the music for adding that essential extra dimension of emotion and atmosphere. I am happy that much of the music on this album is from the Star Trek series and films, often equaling or sometimes even outclassing the original recordings.
This kind of music (for the movies) should be seen as an art on its own rights with its own merits and qualities. As such, the musical sequences on these CD's are a beautifully played cross section of some of the most evoking orchestral music for science fiction/fantasy film ever created. And I very much like the nicely blended, wide and deep orchestral soundpicture with enough reverberation to evoke a sense of wide open spaces.
I am quite thrilled by tracks like the evocative music from Dune, truly transporting one to the vastly sands of Arrakis (the music is wonderful, but to my great regret I think the movie itself is a flawed masterpiece at best, alas.). And then there is the very different, goofy music for Ghostbusters (memories of childhood), the spoofy but electrifying music from Mars Attacks (lovingly parodist music, this, with not a little touch of irony) and the happily adventurous, forward driving Theme from Galaxy Quest ('Never give up, never surrender!'), now also used for the internet-based fan-series Star Trek: The Hidden Frontier. On the other side of the spectrum we have the atmospheric music for Enemy Mine (an underestimated 'little' movie), the Theme from The Right Stuff (actually science FACT, not fiction, this film, just like Apollo 13, of course), the eerily attractive music for Species, the original End Title for Alien (not used in the theatrical version of the movie, where it was replaced by music from howard Hanson's Second Symphony), the exquisitely exotic music for Stargate, the sweet and warmly sympathetic, beautifully re-orchestrated, theme for Starman, the title cue for Star Trek: TOS (much more melodiously played than the original! If only a series nowadays could continue to be as thought provoking and as original as Star Trek was during its launch, fourty years ago ...) and a truly overpowering End Titles Suite from Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. I especially like the thrillingly grandiloquent rendition here of the music for Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. And how nice it is to hear the (thematic) similarities between James Horner's music for The Wrath of Khan, his great break-through as a film music composer, and his (two years) earlier music for Battle Beyond the Stars (which did indeed help him earn the job for writing the music for Star Trek II) ...
But on the 'down side', if one is looking for - for example - the gorgeously expansively played End Titles from Cocoon, it is not included here: one has to acquire the album that 'kicked it all off', so to say, namely 'Space and Beyond', also on Silva Screen. I was very pleased also with the inclusion on that album of some of the music from the series Star Trek: The Next Generation, namely where one of the characters, Tasha Yar, in one of the episodes (Skin of Evil) is saying goodbye to her crewmmates: sweetly sentimental and simple music which I have always wanted to own on CD. I guess that a few cues from the other two sequals ('Alien Invasion: Space and Beyond II' and 'Space3: Beyond the Final Frontier') didn't make it onto this 4 CD collection-album as well, but I guess that it would be the 'better part of the bargain' to opt to buy this 'The Science Fiction Album' instead of buying all three albums separately. Well, of course it is for yourself to ultimately decide what you really want ;-)
If I were to nitpick (which is not easy with such a marvellous project as this one), then I would say that while all music is performed with magnificent grandure and with style, some of it is not performed as crisply and as technically 'on the spot' as some of the original recordings: ensemble is a little slack and the playing somewhat stilted sometimes, losing some of the edge and the originality of the writing. ET and Star Wars spring to mind, but then the soundtracks for Star Wars are traditionally recorded with the magnificent London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by maestro John Williams himself, and these superior recordings (especially the ones for Episode I, II and III) can't really be bettered, IMHO. Likewise for the music from Star Trek: The Motion Picture, I believe that in the end one really has to resort to the ultimate reference, namely the original recording (which is true in many other instances of 'original recordings'), and then the 20th anniversay colector's edition of this soundtrack on Columbia/Legacy (truly unmissable, this veritable classic of sci-fi/film music soundtracks!).
But all in all this 4CD-collection amounts to probably being the penultimate high quality sci-fi music album collection (I certainly know of no other project that comes as close quality as well as quantity wise), with some of the most memorable musical moments from classic to modern sci-fi/fantasy film captured in lavish orchestrations.
Collection-wise: five *stars*. Playing: generally four *stars*, sometimes more. The recording quality: five *stars*. The music (qualified on its own merits as film music) and its (re)orchestrations: generally five *stars*. In the end this is all highly recommended, and certainly not to be missed by science fiction and fantasy film music fans. Klaatu barada nikto.
Muisic of the Spheres.......2006-11-06
You wonderful four disk collection of SF music. It startsa up the the grand master of SF music, 2001: A space Odyssey all the way to Superman. This is all American SF music and several themes I would have liked to have included are not there. All in all though, a collection you will enjoy.
The Ulllllltimate Sci-Fi Music Collection.......2005-10-23
If one person gives great gifts, it's the illustrious Codemaster Talon. I've received a fair number of gifts in my lifetime, but so far, my older sister's take the cake. Take this one for instance. I'm real big on orchestral music, to the point where I listen to them more than any other kind of music. I've got orchestral versions of video game themes, orchestral soundtracks to truck-loads of anime shows (Big O, Escaflowne, and Giant Robo are incredible), and could probably spend the rest of my life just trying to study the nuances of all the classical music I've got. Being such a huge fan of orchestral music, I also have come to believe that orchestra music produced for movies and television is the new classical music (or as someone once said, Mozart would be making music for movies if he were alive today). Being a huge sci-fi fan, that kind of music has always been particularly near and dear to my heart. But were I to buy each and every soundtrack for every sci-fi I liked it would cost quite a bundle, and would include a lot of sub-par music along with the grandiose and fantastic main and memorable themes. That's where this beauty comes in.
The moment I ripped off the shrink-wrap and popped it into my cd player was a moment of great trepidation. Believe me when I tell that I've seen my fair share of sub-par orchestral recording in my lifetime. Very often they are in those big super-packs of music, and suffer from poor direction, improper mastering, and sometime even pathetic orchestration (or worse yet have something sounding like a cheap synthesizer and a kazoo in place of a full orchestra). I needn't have worried though. This sucker is fantastic.
Many people who are not audiophiles will probably miss the point of this cd collection. It is not the original versions of the pieces. It is re-orchestrations, mostly by the phenomenal Prague Symphony Orchestra. Many of these themes didn't sound all that hot in there original versions because they were low budget films or were not recorded in high-fidelity. Here they are given the full treatment, mastered with the most loving care imaginable. Often the version found in these cds is SUPERIOR to the original.
Remember the theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey? Of course you do. But how many times have you heard a cheap imitation of the original version from the movie, starting too low in volume and ending too high (and missing the essential pipe-organ that gives it that extra oomph)? Well, this first track in the entire collection is not only everything it should be instrumental and timing-wise, but it also has been oh-so-carefully adjusted during the mastering process so that at no time is the music either too low or too high in volume (surely a benchmark for every other recording ever to be made of the piece).
Or what about the theme from the (at-the-time) uber-creepy The Black Hole? The orchestration of this piece of music goes from tiumphant to terrifying and back again, with a splendor and cleanness that I CERTAINLY don't remember being in the original recording.
Then there's the new version of the theme from Independence Day, complete with a violin solo, a far more electrifying ending climax, and a chorus so thunderous that you feel like applauding at the end. Simply indescribable. Kind of like the MIND-BLOWING rendition of the theme from The Last Star Fighter. This has been one of my favorite themes for a long time now, but I've never heard it played like this. I think the original version of the theme is something like 1 minute long, but this new version doesn't just fade out (HAHAHAHA!!!!) THIS version is THREE minutes long, goes through the main theme THREE times, with the final strains being so triumphant and joyous I could not help but feel an electrifying charge the first dozen or so times (come to think of it, I still feel that way). This is superior to the original in EVERY way. AWESOME.
And let's not forget the incredible new rendition of Stargate with it's heavy use of clarinets (for Egyptian effect!) and a triumphant new ending (completely lacking the chanting from the original version. This version is so different that for the first minute it is very hard to tell that it is in fact Stargate. But then the main theme kicks in, and then you get this incredible flute solo for my favorite part of theme (the whole thing is played slower, but arguably more powerfully than the original). My goodness. At first I found the thing so different I didn't like it. But then I listened to it again. And again. And again.
I could go on and on, talking about the fantastic new rendition of Moon Raker, the ear-popping Battlestar Galactica, the classic Star Trek (First Contact has a minute or two of the theme from Star Trek:The Motion Picture before going into the main theme), or the sweet renditions of music from the Star Wars movies (or the music from E.T.).
I have to mention though that this collection was not picked based merely on what people want, or on what is popular. No, the people who made it obviously thought a GOOD music collection was better than a popular one. That's why you get a heartbreakingly beautiful theme from A.I. instead of the main theme. It's why you get music from movies that you probably never gave a second thought to the music (because the movie was lousy). It's why you get Armageddon, Judge Dredd, and Robocop (who would have guessed their music was so COOL when there was all that crazy action and bad-acting going on on-screen).
I said it before and I'll say it again. This cd-set was mastered with tender-loving-care, and it shows BIG-TIME. High-fidelity the likes of which I have not seen since the days when cds were brand-new in the world. Dolby Surround. Perfectly balanced. BEAUTIUFL orchestrations. About the only thing that makes me scratch my head is the weird sound-effect tracks (Oooookay.....). Other than that, it's PERFECT. Obviously they could not include every sci-fi theme ever (no one can), but this collection is REALLY GOOD. A lot of great themes that got away (forgotten gems :), new versions of old favorites, and under-appreciated classics aplenty, but ALWAYS the full and complete versions with nothing cut-out (the theme from Dune is quite extended).
If you love movie music (and sci-fi movie music in particular) you MUST buy this awesome collection). It is not the original recordings. Almost always the new ones are better (if they aren't better they're just equal). This is what you have been waiting for. I for one am going to be buying quite a few cds from this company in the future. Give your ears the treat they deserve. Buy it NOW.
SciFi Album gift.......2005-07-20
I bought the Science Fiction Album as a gift for my son who is twenty-one years old. He is a musician, and also a huge fan of many SciFi shows and movies. I thought this would be the perfect thing for him and I was right. He loves it!
Away From to be a Collectible Peace.......2004-12-16
If you like Sci-Fi movies and want a compilation of their important scores, this is the CD-set to buy. But let me warn you about that very few songs in the cds are from the original soundtracks. Most of them is re-recorded by The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. But the sound quality of cds are very good, because they have HDCD and Dolby Surround labels. This set is away from to be a collectible peace, but it is a good general compilation of favorite Sci-Fi movie scores.

Album Description
We should all look so good at fifty.
Rock `n' Roll at 50: A Galaxy of Hits From Rock's First Decade is a three-disc companion to the PBS special airing nationwide beginning in December 2003. The special was produced in cooperation with WQED/Pittsburgh by the same team that created the famed Doo Wop 50 special (the #1 PBS fundraiser of all time). This new box set contains sixty chartbusting hits, from the genesis of rock in the mid-Fifties, through doo-wop, surf music, Motown, Brill Building pop and the British Invasion.
The track list is a Who's Who of rock: Elvis Presley, The Beach Boys, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, The Supremes, Roy Orbison and many, many more.
With the PBS special airing throughout the holiday season, Rock `n' Roll at 50 makes a perfect gift item for the last-minute shopper!
Includes a 40-page booklet--chock-full of photos and track-by-track liner notes--and attractive digibook-style packaging. Every track was a Top 40 hit, and most were Top 10!
Customer Reviews:
A First-Rate Collection from Rock 'n' Roll's Golden Era.......2005-03-04
What's not to like? This sixty-song companion to the PBS documentary is an astonishing testament to rock 'n' roll's golden era. Nearly half of the artists represented here (26 by my count) have been inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. Beginning with Bill Haley's 1954 hit "Shake Rattle and Roll," these three CDs provide a crash course in everything from doo wop to soul to the British Invasion.
While many of these songs are frequently anthologized, there are a number of surprises. Instead of "My Boyfriend's Back," the Angels are represented by their debut hit from 1961, "'Til." Also, instead of hearing "It's My Party" for the umpteenth time, you get "You Don't Own Me." Lou Christie, who is best remembered for "Two Faces Have I" and "Lighting Strikes," is represented by "The Gypsy Cried." And Jack Scott (who I unfortunately NEVER hear on oldies radio) is represented by his million-selling 1958 hit "My True Love."
I do, however, have a couple issues with this box set. First of all is the sequencing. The songs are not chronological, so on disc-1 you get "Do Wah Diddy Diddy" (1964) following "Whole Lot of Shakin' Going On" (1957), and later on the same disc "Lady Willpower" (1968) follows "When You Dance" (1956). And how does "Lady Willpower" fit the box set title (A GALAXY OF HITS FROM ROCK'S FIRST DECADE)? If the oldest song is from 1954, shouldn't the set end with 1963--or 1964 at the latest? Moreover, 1964 is represented by 14 songs (almost a fourth of the total) and 1965 has the second-most songs with seven. [Also, 1966 has three and 1967, 1968 and 1969 each have one.] I'm not really upset with the emphasis on the mid- to late-sixties selections--as an aging Baby Boomer I think these are great songs--I'm just pointing out that there are twice times as many sixties songs (41), as there are fifties songs (19).
One final concern, with each disc averaging just over fifty minutes in length, the price is a bit steep. But when you look at the quality of music in this collection and the terrific 40-page booklet, this is an amazing collection. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Absolutely primo box set!.......2003-11-20
My kids got this for me for my birthday today, and I listened to the whole thing in one sitting. Absolutely first-rate collection of classic early rock, with some interesting obscurities thrown in for good measure. The booklet that comes with it is also a good read. It's everything good about oldies radio with none of the bad stuff--no repeats, commercials, or irritating jingles. This is the perfect gift for anyone who love oldies.

Amazing........2006-10-02
Hammock has truely created a masterpiece. One of my favorite records ever. It flows through emotions and makes emotions flow. It's lovely to listen to while watching a late summer sky, driving through fall foliage on a back road in New England, or just relaxing. Layers of guitars and electronic flourishes. With a few whispered vocals in a couple songs. I would tell anyone to buy this. This album makes life much more beautiful. Stand out tracks would be, The Air Between Us, Before the Celebration, and The Rising Tide. Although ALL of them are fantastic. 5 out of 5. Without a question. I would like The Air Between Us to be played at my wedding.
AS I LAY DREAMING..........2005-11-20
Kenotic charms the listener with gauzy, textural pieces alternating with more rhythmic, foward moving numbers. What really sets Hammock apart from all the other bands of this genre are the great single note and chordal guitar hooks dispersed throughout this excellent disk.
Kenotic is reminiscent of the timeless sounds of the amazing bands of the mid to late 90's Michigan scene. Early Windy and Carl and Auburn Lull come to mind. This is not to say that Hammock have not forged their own blissful sound, because they certainly have. This CD is ample proof.
Hypnotic.......2005-06-24
This album lulls me into a blissful reverie. I know it's not scientific, and you'd probably prefer a run-down on every song. But let me say this: until recently, I had them in my playlist at Rhapsody and turned to them again and again and again and --. Finally I broke down and bought the CD, more to reward the band for bringing such joy to my life than out of a need for ownership. This music dwells in loveliness: swirls of cello, echoing female vocals (Sirens luring my boat to the rocks!), big beefy bass and washes of aching guitar. This is music for Sunday morning or late night drives, cascading and spiraling through an enchanted world. If you need a recharge on your beauty meter, consider giving this album the run of your music-delivery device. I once saw a bumper sticker "MUSIC SAVES" from my favorite band, The Verve. Well, this music is soul therapy. I LOVE it with all my heart.
Americana with loads of reverb.......2005-05-09
Wow, this is pretty. If one had to assign a genre here, "instrumental atmospheric post-rock" might do. Heavily delayed and effected guitars form soothing soundscapes, with low-key bass and drums accompaniment. Occasionally female vocals (mixed way back a la My Bloody Valentine) and cello add color. Some musical reference points might be the Cocteau Twins or the Verve's first album as covered by Bill Frisell. Like Frisell, Hammock expertly convey the quiet openness of rural America, though with fewer quirks and more bliss. Despite the stubbornly diatonic harmonies, there is much skill and subtlety here.
Great transition from Inbetween Time era Common Children.......2005-04-27
Not much that I can add that has not already been said. I predict that in a year or so this band will be just as popular as Explosions in the Sky, Mogwai and Godspeed You Black Emperor. There is a 4 song 12" coming out soon on Republic of Texas Recordings [www.republicoftexasrecordings.com] so everyone should keep an eye out for that.

Album Description
West of the Galaxy is a collection of space music composed between 1985-87, and has been featured on the radio shows "Music From The Hearts Of Space", "Music From The Global Village", "Musical Starstreams", "Echoes", and "Heartbeats". Most of the works on the album were composed as soundtrack music for planetarium shows. "They're absolutely the essence of space music." says Mark C. Petersen, "The planetarium provides an inspiring environment. Space is where we belong, and space music is what puts us in the frame of mind to contemplate the wonders of the universe. In the planetarium we can visualize whatever universe we want. We can wander the plains of Mars, or drift above the clouds of Jupiter, or go out to the farthest reaches of space to witness the power of the quasars and galaxies."

Second rate Jonn Serrie.......2007-07-11
If you like space music, buy Jonn Serrie. He has more musical ideas than Geodesium. I bought this one but ended up deleting half the album from my ipod after hearing how poor most of it was. I could do better if I had my own synthesizer and a multi-track recorder. A lot of synth whooshing and crescendos. Ho-hum.
Fantastic space music!.......2007-04-07
This is great space music! If you enjoy planetarium music then you'll probably enjoy this CD. I think tracks 1, 4, 6 and 9 are soothing, like the warm rays of sunlight after journeys in dark corners of the universe. In my imagination the music of track 2 captures the exciting mood of watching a night sky ablaze with stars, comets, and meteor showers. Track 3 sounds magical to me, like strange, exotic planets in other galaxies. Track 5 has some great feel-good music, like viewing the blue sphere of earth again after a long space voyage. Track 7 sounds peaceful, like a restful stop on a lush, paradisiacal planet in another solar system. I think track 8 sounds dramatic, like the anticipation of beginning a fantastic space voyage. Listen to sound samples and see what emotions and imagination the music stirs in your heart!
Happy Bunnies.......2007-03-16
This music does not make me think about space or other worlds. It makes me think of fluffy, happy bunnies warming everybody's hearts as they dance around healing our wounded planet with their bright happy energy. It also gives me nightmares of a great big weird man walking up to me over and over again saying with a warm smile: "Magic is in you!"
West of the Galaxy.......2000-03-02
Great music for a planetarium or for a session on star-gazing. I use this regularly in the Lancaster High School Planetarium, Lancaster, Ohio.

Mighty Good.......2006-11-02
The Choir keeps pumping out music that makes me think, makes me smile, and makes me want more of of their music. If you haven't heard "She's Alright" or "Nobody Gets A Smooth Ride", you really need yourself a favor and get the album. Also "Fine, Fun Time" is just that. Apart from these standout tracks, the rest of the album is pretty standard fare for the The Choir, which means it's all mighty good listening. You'll be humming these hooks for weeks.
Oh, and if you're thinking of buying this digitally off iTunes, let me recommend against it. The packaging and liner notes for this album are hands down the most entertaining and thoughtful that The Choir has ever released.
The Choir continue to deliver the goods..........2006-04-29
The last time the threesome from Nashville, TN released an album was way back in 2000 with Flap Your Wings. Fans like myself had to wait another five years for their next release, and it was worth the wait! OHTMHF is another excellent release from the band. Continuing the theme of the Christian faith in the midst of life's struggles, the band continues to excel both lyrically and musically. From life's up's and down's ("Nobody Gets A Smooth Ride") to faith and trust ("Enough To Love") to withdrawing from everyone's love and concern during dark times ("How I Wish I Knew") to broken relationships ("Terrible Mystery"), the band manage to articulate faith, hope, and love in the midst of the trials of life. But the one thing that surprised me about this album is the fact that Husker Du was namechecked in one of the songs ("Fine Fun Time"). In any case, do get this album especially if you love Christian alternative music!
