How the Nature became Devine

In the beginning all was divine in 6/8 time and Dematha High would serve as fertile ground for the humble beginnings of DEVINE NATURE. On the first day that Devin "Devine" Ward and Philippe LeMaire met in 1984 there was an instant connection. Infatuated with "Go Go", DC's Homegrown style of music, they would spend most of their weekends following local bands like "Ayre Rayde", "Rare Essence and "EU", but it wouldn't be until 1986 that they would decide to collaborate on music with their first song being a catchy tune entitled "Love will kick U when you're down".

For nearly a decade Devin and Phil would collaborate with a plethora of other artist around the DC metropolitan area. Toni Blackman the founder of "The Freestyle Union", a hip-hop grass roots organization, hooked up with Devin and Phil. They formed their first band called "Ha". This was short lived due to inexperience and lack of chemistry. But the three recognized the talent they each held. Eventually Philippe and Devin, under their production moniker formed in 1992 "Devine Nature" would reunite with Toni. The band Daughters of the CipHer was formed. This time Phil would be on Keys and Devin on drums. The rest of the group would be all females including 4 mc's, a vocalist, and bass. Devine Nature produced most of the music played. With this band D.N. would gain valuable experience opening for industry heavies like The Roots, WuTang Clan, Regina Belle, and Ricki Lee Jones. Unfortunately the pressure of keeping a band together was too much for them to handle at this stage of their development.

But fresh off that experience Devine Nature, the band was formed in 1998. With Phil on keys and Devin on a little bit of everything, they would solicit the help of a few old high school buddies. Paul who brought about a funky slap style and bottom heavy licks came in on bass. Gary came in a short while later, and with his Latin influence added a nice flavor to the already funky raw sound of the Nature with percussion. With the addition of a heavy-hitting drummer and funky lead guitar, Phil and Devin finally had a core of musicians that could execute their musical ideas. Phil could write a moody ballad that could bring a tear to your eye, and the band could deliver it live.

The band was gaining a loyal following on the local scene, playing at bars and clubs and taking road trips to gigs. Then they were blessed to have the incredibly talented songstress they had envisioned for so long in Andaiye, joining the fold. Her strong female presence exudes the power of women in the new millennium; sexy and self-assured. Rick on guitar and Dyrell on drums are the latest additions to the Devine Nature family. With propulsive rhythms on guitar, Ricky "Rockstar" McKay helped the Nature get to the other side. Drummer Dyrell Madison joined the DEVINE NATURE family in 4/4 time blending his swing drum style, and keeping the bands metronome right in the pocket. And in the end "Devine Nature presents…"Neo-Funkalistic Flavaz" was born, their first full length CD in April 2003!

Devine Nature blends several genres of music from soul, hip-hop, and acid jazz to go-go, Latin, rock and reggae. But through it all the common thread is FUNK!

CAN I START A FAN CLUB? WHEN YOU PURCHASE THIS CD YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED. THE GROOVE ON SOME OF THE TRACKS HAVE A BRAND NEW HEAVIES FLAVA, BUT STILL THEY HAVE THEIR OWN DISTINCT AND FRESH SOUND. THE GROOVES ARE TIGHT WITH KICKIN' BASS AND PERCUSSION THAT MAKES ASK, WHERE'S THE PARTY!!!
