She's no stranger to the towering highs and lows of the heart, and Etta James's soaring, gospel-tinged pipes match up well with the rigors of unabashed bliss. Happily, the good people at Chess Records recognize this, and they have thoughtfully collected some of the best examples into one tidy record. Kicking off with her classic treatment of "At Last," the collection moves through the lilting strings of "My Dearest Darling" on into the expressive tones of "I Want to Be Loved (But Only by You)" with grace and emotional candor. James can be simultaneously tender and deeply honest and her ability to express the desperate joy that is the soul of love remains one of life's marvelous pleasures. --Matthew Cooke
Customer Reviews:
THE LADY CAN SING.......2007-07-15
When Etta James starts to sing the world stands still and your heart skips a beat. What a voice this lady had. I am very thankful to have this music as it can transform an ordinary day into a fantastic mood of love and happiness. When she sings At Last or Sunday King of Love my heart smiles and her smooth blues make me sings too. She makes music way more than just sound. Thanks
New Edge to "Old" Love Songs.......2007-07-07
For years I have said that even though Etta James did not have many "Top Ten" hits on the charts, she is the best interpreter of other singers' songs, the best who ever lived and sang on a New Orleans or a Chicago stage or bar stool. She takes every song she sings and makes it all new and all Etta. She is the single most important reason I became a fan of the blues _ _ _ years ago. You get the picture? I am an old lady and am an old fan.
She's been through many years of problems and heartache, but then, here she still is, with a voice that is even better (if that's possible!) than when she was a sweet young thing performing with Louie Armstrong, Ray Charles, BB King and all the great band leaders and blues singers. She even has a new thin physique!
A couple of the tunes are ones she had in her regular repertoire forty-five years ago and others are contemporary hits from other artists. Each one is "pure Etta." I seem to play this one over and over and over. I can't get enough. I even have it on my computer so I can listen to it when I am doing other work!
This CD is a great example of what the blue are and the influence it can have on all kinds of music. Some of the tunes one will hardly recognize at first. And--the best part of this recording is that you don't have to be in love to enjoy it! (though it wouldn't be bad that way, too)
Etta.......2007-05-30
Great songs and some very sensual! Perfect for a romantic dinner at home with candles.....
Gets better each time.......2007-04-02
This is one of those CD's that just keeps getting better with familiarity. Etta really puts her heart and soul into each song. I bought it for "At Last" but now love all the songs on it. It sounds like my old 45's, but in a good way.

Culled from the Columbia Records reissue packages, variously released under the multivolume Quintessential Billie Holiday umbrella, this package goes straight for the love songs, the heart of Holiday. Ranging from such playful lyrics as "Let's Do It" and "Them There Eyes" to such essential Holiday as "You Go to My Head," "The Very Thought of You," and "Easy Living," this set is guaranteed to keep the home fires burning brightly. Lay this one on your lover next Valentine's Day. As was so frequently the case with Holiday, the ensemble support is impeccable, including many of the swingers from Columbia's Greatest Hits package. The bonus here is Count Basie on piano, leading his swinging big band on "They Can't Take That Away from Me." --Willard Jenkins
Customer Reviews:
Classic!.......2007-01-11
Anybody who loves jazz and the blues cannot be without this Billie Holiday CD. I love it. I can listen to it all day. It's a pleasure to hear great jazz and such an incredible voice.
WOW!!.......2006-11-09
This cd was the first Billie Holiday I ever purchased. WOW! She is the greatest, bar none! EVERY serious lover of music needs this work to add to their collection. I had no idea how special she was and how timeless her work. I am a fan for life.
Great Collection of Billie Holiday Songs.......2006-10-06
There are so many fabulous reviews for this CD and I have to agree with them. I've been a Billie Holiday fan for years and own many discs of her music, but I find myself reaching for this one a lot. It's a great collection of songs and her voice is so sweet and true here. She's in top form and the arrangements on the songs are all excellent. Whoever put this CD together knew what they were doing. This is definitely Billie during the earlier part of her career and there's a real lightness to this music. (Her later music is great too, but very different.) Most of the songs on this CD are classics and even if you're unfamiliar with her, you'll probably still recognize many of them. There is some crackling background noise on some of the songs, since they were recorded back in the late thirties/early forties, though it's not that bad and most of the time you barely notice it. Some of the stand outs are "You Go To My Head", "The Very Thought of You", "Let's Do It", "The Way You Look Tonight", just to name a few. I think this would be a great introductory CD for someone who is curious about her and would like to hear some of her music.
Oh, Billie! HOW DIVINE !!!.......2006-08-25
This CD is an excellent collection of great songs performed by the incomparable and legendary Billie Holiday. Billie could conquer any song--from the most vulgar to the most sublime with an electric performance that rivals the best singers of the 20th century.
The CD begins so beautifully with Billie singing "All Of Me" and continues on into "You Go To My Head" by Gillespie and Coots. As with the rest of the songs on this CD, there is some background surface noise as these recordings by Billie were made in the 1930s and the very early 1940s. Nevertheless, there is a certain romantic style to each recording that leaves the listener wanting more after every track.
There songs on this CD are truly timeless; Billie sings such standards as "You Go To My Head," "The Man I Love," "Let's Do It," "The Way You Look Tonight" and "The Very Thought Of You." Don't play this CD for the first time without having time to relax and enjoy it with a glass of your favorite wine--you'll want to listen to it again after you've played it through because it's that beautiful and special.
The liner notes include an essay by Delfeayo Marsalis, the song credits and the dates Billie recorded them, a beautiful black and white photograph of Billie singing at the microphone on stage and the lyrics to "You Go To My Head" and "Easy Living."
I highly recommend this CD for fans of Billie Holiday, classic vocals and the standards of the entire 20th century. Although it is only one CD, it still is a very good representation of Billie's talent. It makes a great starter CD for people who want to find out more about Billie before they purchase box sets, too. A terrific experience to be enjoyed! SMILE
Fine CD.......2006-04-28
This CD is a beautiful selection of classic Holiday. I really enjoy Holiday's voice. It is so natural and simple. Buy it. You won't be disappointed.

Phil, how could you forget?.......2007-08-01
One of the BEST old school, blue lights in the basement cuts-Dreaming's Out Of Season" the one you sang lead with the Montclairs. I'd love to hear you re-record it AND "Make up for lost time".These two rank right next to the others on this CD.
Classic Love Songs Sung by Phil.......2007-06-27
What can I say, Phil you've done it again. Once more you showed the world why you are one of the primier male R&B singers. A lot of people try to cover the classics but only a few can do it with such style and grace, and you are one of those few. Each song was sung with such care and feeling. Man you've done the originals (songs)proud and I believe the writers of these songs and are pleased that you have reminded us of what a love song is suppose to sound like. Phil, you da man!!
The Classic Love Songs by Phil Perry.......2007-01-11
Phil Perry is one of the most outstanding singers of all times. I love his music. This particular CD shows me a different side of him. It shows me a soft, mellow side of him. Hopefully, more people will experience this beautiful, classic CD.
This CD is my all time favorite!.......2007-01-09
This is the best CD that I have purchased in a while. I play it ALL the time and have told all of my friends about it too! Phil Perry is real SMOOTH and with these classics you can't go wrong. Great arrangements, great voice, nice groove..... I love it!
Ohio.......2007-01-05
It is outstanding, anyone that is a Phil Perry fan will love this CD. There is no disappointment at all in this CD. If it is a first time for you picking this artist out, then the only thing I can say is that you pick a good one.

It's really good to have these love songs by Harold Arlen, George Gershwin, Arthur Schwartz, and Kurt Weill available in one place. Each is a charmer, with sometimes witty, always thoughtful lyrics; some are well known, others less so and three of the Kurt Weill songs have never before been recorded. American soprano Carole Farley has been singing some of opera's most demanding roles - Lulu and Salome - for over thirty years now, however, and there has been some toll on her voice. As an interpreter, she's insightful and articulate, but while she happily avoids any operatic posturing, there's no denying that her quasi-whispering at times is more necessary to keep the voice from shattering than an altogether artistic choice. John Constable's classy accompaniments help to bring out the inherent suavity in these songs. Those who really appreciate the elegance of Broadway during this 30-year period will be pleased with this recording. --Robert Levine
Album Description
World Premeire Recordings of three Kurt Weill songs
Customer Reviews:
Much to Enjoy, But..........2007-07-21
I was also very pleased to find so many fine songs nicely interpreted in one place. For the most part, I found Ms. Farley's lightening of her voice reasonably effective, but not so in the Gershwin songs. These I found almost unlistenable. Frankly, I found myself wondering if she was imitating Joan Morris' nearly perfect renditions of "Isn't It a Pity" and "How Long Has This Been Going On," (Gershwin: Piano Music) with unfortunate results.
I'm probably being unfair, given the fact that I enjoy most of the rest of Farley's performances. And I have certainly admired her work in other recordings, as well. But if you love Morris' performances of the Gershwin, you may wish to listen to the samples before you buy.
Classic performances of classic songs.......2007-07-07
For anyone with an interest in American song, I'd say that this album is a must-buy, offering beautiful interpretations of favourites and of several rarities, too.
Each of these twenty-two songs is a pleasure to hear. There's variety in the selection in both musical and lyrical style, but what they have in common is that all are -- or should become -- classics. I can't imagine why no-one has until now recorded Weill's "The Romance Of A Lifetime". We need to be grateful to Farley and Constable for also giving us "The River is So Blue" and "The Picture On The Wall" with Weill's music and Ann Ronell's lyrics.
Who can listen to Arthur Schwartz's "You and the Night and the Music" without wanting to move to its irresistible tango? And this performance of his "Dancing in the Dark" will lift the heart and brighten any gloom.
From Harold Arlen, we get seven delights, including a lilting "I had Myself a True Love" and a bluesy "When the Sun Comes Out". Farley and Constable's thoughtful readings of several other Arlen gems take us to the centres of these reflective pieces.
There are great interpretations out there of the Gershwins' "Isn't It a Pity?", but surely not many that combine the lift of George's music and the wit of Ira's lyrics into something so light that it floats away.
This happens through the collaboration of two great artists who have the musical insight to recognize classics when they discover them (as with the Weill rarities) and in their interpretations to find for us the essential character of each song. For comparison I listened to early recordings of some of these pieces, for example of Arlen singing his own work, and found them pleasant, clever, diverting perhaps, but ultimately ephemeral. Farley and Constable turn them into art. Farley knows how to shape a vocal phrase to open up the emotion in the words she's singing. Constable has a well-established reputation as a concert accompanist and collaborates without dominating. He thoroughly understands this idiom, giving sensitive and subtle readings, but is also quite capable of dazzling us with the break in Arlen's "Fun to be Fooled".
The voice Carole Farley has chosen is the only drawback to this album. I'm guessing that she correctly felt that an operatic voice would not suit this material and so altered her breath support to produce a smaller sound. Sadly this brings a thinness to her upper register, particularly on long vowels, that mars otherwise excellent performances. This would be a transcendent version of Gershwin's "Soon" except that Farley has to reach too hard for her high notes. I may be wrong about why the vocal quality is rough here and there, but at any rate this is not the voice we have on her recent recording of William Balcom songs, also on Naxos. This is reason to withhold a fifth star, but no reason not to buy a disc which has so much to offer.
In sum, this album provides sixty-six minutes of delight. The CD includes lyrics and notes on each song.

Interested in visiting your favorite contestants from the second season of American Idol? Then this is the album for you, but be forewarned that something is lost in the translation from the small screen to the compact disc. Simon Cowell's scathing comments and Paula Abdul's head tossing add to the human drama; without those visual embellishments, the recorded version falls flat. Sure this is a talented bunch, but the material is mundane, with few of the finalists straying from the traditional arrangements. But when they do, it's sometimes worse. Ruben Stoddard's rendition of the Carpenters hit "Superstar" reeks of misplaced sincerity. The best cut on the disc is Kimberly Caldwell's throaty cover of Roberta Flack's "Killing Me Softly With His Song," which gives the song some well-needed grit. And while Julia Demato's voice is no match for Etta James's full-bodied version of "At Last," Demato gives the classic a fetching kittenish spin. --Jaan Uhelszki
Customer Reviews:
THE BEST TALENT!!! some bad song selects............2007-06-29
Season 2 of american idol (in my opinion) had the best talent. the biggest voices and broke all stereotypes. although some people had there choice to win the finale (i really wanted kimberley locke to win), i thought they ended by pickin the right person. the previous season had there 'best' performances but this season did the opposite and decided to do love songs... honestly they should have did a greatest hits LP because i could name quite a few BRILLIANT performances by at least 5 of the contestants.
hands down the best track on the album is 'superstar' by ruben studdard. he channeled luther vandross sooooo amazingly that luther would be proud. 'killing me softley' my kim caldwell was awesome as well. she defiinatly brought the blue eyed soul on this track.
clay aiken, trenyce, charles grigsby, and carmen did great jobs on there songs as well....
now the bad.... i love kimberley locke and she did an brilliant job on 'somewhere over the rainbow', BUT the cd is called LOVE SONGS and that is not a love song at all. rickey is a great voice but his version of 'back to one' sounded EXACTLY like brian mcknight. josh gracin (was not my favourite) did a HORRIBLE job on this song... they should have gave him a country song to sing.
the class of season 2 will still be my favourite voices but i just wish they picked better songs for this cd.
3 stars out of 5
All Time Classic Love Songs...Ruined.......2006-07-18
Seriously, this CD is BAD. The only song that I can say is any good is Ruben Studdard's rendition of Superstar. And if you like that song, go buy Ruben's album, because this is not worth your money. The only reason I can see anyone buying this album, is if you are just into collecting AI merch. Other than than, SKIP THIS ONE.
this cd stinks!.......2005-09-25
This cd is obnoxious. The artists all seem to compete by seeing how many notes they can add into one syllable. I have never heard so many slides on the notes.
Sounds good.......2005-09-09
I really enjoyed this CD.
They picked good songs to sing and the vocals were good.
God Bless The USA was really good at the end!
I love what American Idol has done for singing!.......2005-08-10
As a professional singer and Voice Teacher, I am so thrilled to see how American Idol has given the art of singing such a jump start in these last few years.
These American Idol CDs and programs are filled with so much varying talents. From Hard rock to Country, America is becoming interested in identifying true talent. As an Opera Singer myself I can still enjoy the gifts of other genres and am sad to hear when others look down upon the show. Also, as a voice teacher of many styles I can't stress enough the need to my own students for them to develop themselves as a "Complete Unique Package". Finding their own true niche and style including: voice type, genre, best repertoire, to the the right audition outfit. American Idol teaches the same theories. Be true to yourself and your voice to get your best shot at this business of singing. I am an advocat for AI and all shows that encourage the high developement of arts in America. We come from a society that watched sports religiously on telievision (which is great) but there are so many talents to support including singing out there amongst us. American Idol gives artists and viewers a fantastic opportunity.

Back to when I believed in fairy tales...........2002-09-30
If you could, just for a moment, return to the days when fairy godmothers were real, when you really could turn four white mice into four white horses - then just buy this CD for a few smiles, a lot of memories, and the original Rodgers and Hammerstein tunes. This CD took me way back to when magic was there, and now it makes me wonder, everytime I listen to it, if maybe the magic isn't still there? Maybe I should just call on my fairy godmother..... A true heirloom of a CD.
The Glass Slipper Fits!.......2001-04-21
This is an excellent compilation of songs that express the longings, fears and exuberance of the Cinderella story. Rather than just relying of the romantic side of the myth, producer Bruce Kimmel adds depth to the story by including songs from The Slipper and The Rose and Sondheim's Into the Woods as well as the Disney and Roger & Hammerstein Cinderella versions.
When Susan Egan plans her strategy in "Promise Him Anything" and Pamela Winslow expresses her fear in "On the Steps of the Palace," the listener becomes aware of Cinderella's human side. Likewise, when Christa Moore shares her fantasy world "In My Own Corner" and Christina Noll expresses her thrill of her dream coming true in "Impossible/Suddenly It Happens," the listener is reminded of the powerful message of Cinderella's theme: dreams DO come true.
Fortunately, the compilation does not exclude humor as well. "The Stepsister's Lament" by Farah Alvin and Alet Oury is hilariously poignant; the lyrics "Why would a fellow want a girl like her? A frail and frocky beauty!" could be the alltime wallflowers' lament. And Jonathan Freeman's "What Has Love Got to Do with Getting Married?" is a droll piece of practical cynicism to his Prince son. (The song reminds me of the film Moonstruck. When Olympia DuKakis asks her daughter Cher, "Do you love him?" When Cher answered affirmatively, her mother muttered, "That's bad.")
Also, the musical bridges add to the suspense of the Cinderella story. "Midnight", "The Ball," and "If The Shoe Fits" from Prokofiev's ballet are beautifully orchestrated and remind the listener that the Cinderella myth is adaptable for many forms of entertainment.
I was a little disappointed that "So This is Love" and "The Work Song" was not included, but I guess I'm partial to the Disney version. The 1950 cartoon was my first introduction to Cinderella, and to my delight, my nephew enjoyed it as well thirty years later.
Nevertheless, this CD shows the timeless appeal of the Cinderella myth. Its beauty, humor and suspense is contained here in this magnificent collection.
Magical collection fit for a princess!.......1999-04-13
I was thrilled to come across this collection. One of my favorite movies, The Slipper and the Rose, had been out of print for many years. This CD includes 4 of the songs from that movie and though not by the original artists, just as good. The songs range from the whimsical to the romantic to a few comic gems, all from various stage and film Cinderella scores. "Tell Him Anything" from the Slipper and the Rose, a powerful song filled with longing and despair is sung movingly by Susan Egan, a nice change of pace from the cheerier, more sparkling numbers.
The score from Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella is so charming and catchy it's fun to hear it again by new artists. The performers, all apparently Broadway singers (?), are all beautifully performed with exuberance and style. The orchestration is lush and appropriate to the material.
Fabuloso!!!! A must have!!!!.......1998-08-11
This is an AWESOME cd. It has songs from the original Rodgers and Hammerstein version, the Disney version, and Into the Woods. This is a faboulos collection of songs. Definetly buy it. NOW!!!!!

My Dream Is April.......2006-06-08
April Barrows has the sweetest voice. She reminds me of Doris Day.It looks like she has paid her dues and should have hit world wide fame by now.
It is wonderful to have a great artist that is still alive to give us new and fresh material. I am trying to find her first cd and will not give up untill I do.
Buy this cd and spread the word!!
Writer Breaks Out.......2005-06-26
To the author of the review who suggested "Swing" by Suzy Boguss... well, yeah! April Barrows WROTE those songs! Anyway, its great to hear her own interpretations. Fans of Madelaine Peyroux and Norah Jones' jazz work won't be disappointed to pick this one up, too.
Close but no cigar.......2005-05-11
I listened to this CD with high hopes, because I love this style of music. However, I was disappointed to find that several of the best songs come straight from Suzy Bogguss' album "Swing" (My Dream Is You, Jumpin' Into Spring, Burning the Toast), and Bogguss does a much better job with the material. I find that I DO like the instrumentals in "I'm Beginning to See the Light", and Barrows does an adequate job with the rest of the albums content. She seems to lack that "smokey" quality, though, that makes the singers of this genre so great. My advice is to listen to a few tracks from Bogguss' "Swing" before you buy this album, then decide.
Stunning debut..........2002-07-08
I had to break down and buy this CD after hearing so many nice things about it. Good thing, too!
For her debut album, April Barrows has created a wonderful disc that one would normally associate with an established recording star far along the path of fame and fortune. She possesses a surprising maturity not only in writing and vocalizing, but in song selection as well.
There are so many good numbers on here that it is tricky to pick out which are the best. I have several instant favorites, among them the two Moon songs, "Mr. Moon" and "I Wanna Turn Out My Light". Others that jump out are "An Old Stuffed Sofa", "Someone Else's Arms", "Lost in a Blue Note", and "Jumping into Spring". But I think if I were forced to choose only one favorite here, it would have to be the fun little number, "Burning the Toast".
All of the songs (most written by April), have a classic jazz style, calling to mind the best of female jazz vocalists from both the classic period (1930s - early 1950s), and the "new school" period with today's artists such as Karin Allyson, Rebecca Kilgore, Tierney Sutton, and others. Many of her songs have a wonderful sense of whimsy, and you know that April is giving each offering to us with a wink and a smile. Both "Burning the Toast" and "An Old Stuffed Sofa", along with the two Moon songs, deliver this whimsical sense in spades.
The artists backing April's songs fit nicely with her style, and both the band and the singer are not afraid to get out of each other's way when they need to. There's a good clarinet player, too, which is always nice to hear.
In short, the CD is a joy to listen to.
By all means, if you're a fan of intimate jazz vocalists, you should purchase this disc just as fast as mouse clicks will allow. I plan to do the same with her second album, "All You Need Is The Girl".
Amazing.......2002-01-23
I must have purchased this cd shortly after it came out -- one of those stab in the dark things that just seems to work out. Now her song "My Dream Is You," will be the first song that I dance to with my new husband in June 2002. This music is timeless, and I'm ordering a second copy right now, along with her new cd. Enjoy!

They don't write music like this anymore.......2006-12-31
Who cares if a soprano is singing songs written for a tenor or Thine Alone was written as a duet? This is a perfectly lovely album, and I've never heard my two favorites--Thine Alone, Toyland--sung more beautifully. The soprano, Virginia Croskery, takes no liberties with the music--sings it lovingly and as it was written. Refreshing in our self-indulgent times when singers seem to think it compulsory to "make a song their own" or whatever it is they think they're doing.
an elegant and sensitive treatment of classic favorites!.......2004-01-13
Totally enchanted with this CD. The soprano supremely gifted and the orchestra - stunning. I highly recommend it for the sensitive music lover!
He deserves better.......2000-02-29
This new Victor Herbert is a disaster. The soloist is bad and destroys Romany Life. Her other songs aren't much better. Most of the vocal music was written with a chorus in mind. No chorus. Over half the vocal selections are mutilated. 2/3rds of Kiss Me Again is gone, about 1/2 of Moonbeams cannot be found, the second verse of A Kiss in the Dark is among the missing, etc. Thine Alone was written as a duet. Molly was written for a tenor. They are sung by a soprano. Herbert wrote so much music beautiful music but onl;y his most famous can be found here. Three or four orchestral selections are all that can be recommended. Until John McGlinn or Richard Bonynge realize that Herbert once existed he is in trouble. Naxos and Brion are not the answer.
A valuable addition to recorded Americana.......2000-01-19
It is a Good Thing that Naxos is starting an American Classics series at their usual budget price and that Victor Herbert is featured on two of them. We have as of this writing the purely instrumental
(8.559025) and its sequel
(8.559026). The latter features soprano Virginia Croskery and the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra under Keith Brion. Yes, this offers an interesting comparison with the old Beverly Sills offering of much the same material. Ms. Croskery's vocalizing is very good indeed and perhaps more in keeping with the kind of voice for which much of this music was composed; but while Ms. Sills' voice is quite thrilling, it is perhaps a touch too operatic for this lightweight material. On the other hand, the Naxos sound is far beyond what the older set can give us. Of the 16 selections on this CD, 5 are instrumental. Of the vocals, not all were written for the soprano voice ("Toyland" for example); but most were and we have here what you would expect: "Romany Life," "Kiss in the Dark," "Italian Street Song," "Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life," and so on. Some listeners might have some trouble with the singer's very top notes; but at this price and for lack of anything competitive that is still available, this is still a very good purchase. This disc makes a fine companion piece, not only to the other Naxos set, but also to a concert of Herbert and Romberg duets on Newport Classic label titled "Sweethearts."

The Mancini Touch Lives On As Time Goes By.......2006-01-17
Henry Mancini was one of the legendary musical icons in the history of pop music. He had created countless of beautiful melodies to last for a lifetime of listening enjoyment. I believe that he had accomplished the ultimate goals in his career: fame, recognition, achievements, respect, awards and great tributes after his death.
In this recording, Mr. Mancini conducted The Mancini Pops Orchestra and arranged all the tracks and he also played solo piano on some of the tunes. This CD is a collection of theme songs from fifteen motion picture films from 1930s thru 1990s.
The prototypical movie love song, "As Time Goes By," welcomes the listeners with its grand arrangement and its melancholic music. Herman Hupfield composed it in 1931 for a Broadway show "Everybody's Welcome," and in 1942, it was incorporated in the musical score of "Casablanca."
You'll be mesmerized by the classical-flavored and marvelous arrangement of "Stella By Starlight," a hauntingly beautiful gem from Victor Young and Ned Washington. This is my top favorite. It's so enchanting and I could listen to it endlessly.
"Unchained Melody," "Mona Lisa," "Two For The Road" and a medley of "Call Me Irresponsible/The Second Time Around" will leave the listeners in a relaxed mood. These tunes have that calming effect that would soothe your cares away. It's just perfect for relaxation and unwinding after a busy day at work, or just background music for a cozy home-cooked-dinner with the company of friends.
"The Summer Knows" is also one fabulous track from the movie "Summer of '42," a movie about the pain of a romance that was lost and its haunting memories. The musical score by Michel Legrand won the Oscar for Best Original Score in 1971.
I had a great and enjoyable listening experience with this CD. I wholeheartedly recommend it. You'll enjoy listening to it, too.
For Young and Old Lovers Everywhere........2002-12-30
Dim the lights - pour the wine and give this great instrumental recording a spin. From the lilting title song to the late Mancinis' own composition 'Charade' this is quite an unusual recording. 'One for my baby' will certainly set you in the mood followed by the theme from 'Bobin Hood (prince of Thieves), Everything I Do (I Do It For You). 'That Old Black Magic' takes us back to it's tribal routes (check out the drums throughout) to a beautiful sax/piano version of Al Hibbler's 'Unchained Melody' to one of the better instrumental versions of 'Mona Lisa' and on and on. Features many solos of violins, sax, piano, drums, etc.
Not enough Mancini tunes.......2001-02-28
I first realized the brilliance of Mancini when I heard a Charlie Haden/Pat Metheny rendition of "Two For The Road". I went in search of hearing more Mancini tunes. Sadly after I bought this CD I discovered that only 4 of the 15 tunes are written by Henry, "Two For The Road" being my favorite. The non-Mancini tunes are good and showcase his expert skill of arranging but I wanted ALL Henri.
As Time Goes By and Other Classic Movie Love Songs.......2000-05-30
I've had this CD for years and it has been my consistent and absolute favorite; the opening number sets a fabulous mood and the whole CD follows suit. It's terrific music for reading, for dinner, for just being around the house, and guests always ask what it is and comment on how much they like it. I had to replace it last week because of a scratch and was very relieved it was still in print.
