You don't expect a Broadway star to be slow burning and funky (Ben Vereen notwithstanding), but Heather Headley is both. Best known for her stage roles in The Lion King and Aida--the latter won her a Tony--the Trinidad native is used to arch performance. Yet her debut album focuses on smooth, lean R&B grooves and Headley's honeyed voice. Heartbreak is Headley's ace. "I Wish I Wasn't" is a tortured missive dispatched from an empty home. "Always Been Your Girl"--the set's hands-down centerpiece--finds Headley pleading with a longtime friend to consider her in a different light. It's a staggeringly powerful song--the kind you can imagine Headley belting out beneath a stark spotlight--made all the more stunning by the fact that the whole collection isn't tied to that one emotion. Also here are the breezy, Mars-Venus meditation "Nature of a Man" and the near-tribal thump of "Like Ya Used To." There are producers and guests aplenty, but Headley is, as always, the star of the show. --Kim Hughes

Discovered this artist a few years back through one of those recommendation links and I have been hooked on her music ever since. Thought this album was the best thing to hit the airwaves in forever. . until I discovered her second album! She is amazing! Both of her albums are incredible, soulful, beautiful and rank right up there with the likes of Mary J. Blige and Christina Aguilera. This CD is great, but her second CD RULES!! Get them both, you won't be disappointed!

I love, love, love this cd. I've already had to replace it twice due to overplaying. (Guess I should just break down and get one of those MP3 Players)!

For me, this is a musical masterpiece. Heather's voice is a divine gift that floats the listener into some parallel universe for the length of the cd. I totally "feel" her and would recommend this to anyone looking for darn good R&B, Pop, Lounge-y sounds.

I wish I wasn't is her only good song on this album. He is isn't even that good of a song. It's okay. The rest of the album sucks. This is an example of an album where an artist puts out a good single knowing they could suck you into it.I wouldn't reccommend this album to anyone, unless they just want it for the singles. And for that, you could download the songs for 99 cents ea. on the internet.Overall, it's a bad album.There's nothing more to really say about it.

I bought Heather's Cd when the song "He Is" came out. I immediately claimed it as my favorite. For several weeks, it was all I listened to. I can relate to the lyrics on "I wish I wasn't" and several others. You go Heather! Keep on doing what you're doing.

While not overly generous at 55 minutes, the highlights album of the 1987 original Broadway cast recording of Les Miserables is intelligently selected and likely to prove satisfying to most fans. It includes the best-loved numbers of Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg's score, beautiful ballads ("Bring Him Home," "I Dreamed a Dream") and rousing anthems ("One Day More," "Do You Hear the People Sing?") alike, but eliminates some choral numbers ("Lovely Ladies"), redundancies ("Red and Black"), and connective tissue that propels the plot along ("Valjean Arrested," "Come to Me (Fantine's Death)"). Sure, a more perfect selection could have lasted longer than half of the two-disc set's 104 minutes by adding "At the End of the Day" and "In My Life," among others, but it's still a good representation on a convenient single disc. Of course, those who always want to re-create the theatrical experience will never be satisfied with a highlights album.

Re-creating their roles from the London production, Colm Wilkinson plays the heroic Valjean and Frances Ruffelle is the despondent Eponine. Randy Graff (Fantine), Terrence Mann (Javert), David Bryant (Marius), Judy Kuhn (Cosette), Michael Maguire (Enjolras), and Leo Burmester and Jennifer Butt (the Thénardiers) fill out the cast. --David Horiuchi

Each member of the Les Miserables cast stands to deliver this musical to its audience. Within moments we are transported to France during their Restoration. We experience sadness, laughter and, indeed, want to join in their crusade. The music and deliverance, in my opinion, is excellent.

Great Score, But Highlights Missing Critical Songs.......2005-08-05

Composers Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg's score for "Les Miserables" is simply brilliant and the spectacular Broadway cast, led by Colm Wilkinson, Randy Graff, Terrence Mann, and Frances Ruffelle, help bring this incredible music to life!

While I normally enjoy "highlight" cds, this one clocks in at a mere 55 minutes and could have easily included a couple of additional tunes (thus losing one star). Most notably missing: "At The End Of The Day", "Come To Me", "Red And Black", and "In My Life". The show's most memorable songs, however, are included.

Highlights are never worth it. You will never get the little in-between songs which make a show complete, montages will be cut together badly instead of being full songs as they should be...so much is left out. This is a fantastic show and deserves to be heard in full.

I am currently going through some emotional trials and tribulations in my life right now. I went to the Father for support by focusing on the Word of God. But in addition to this, Kelly's CD has given me the inspiration I need through her lyrics to help me began the healing of my broken spirit. This is a great album, from the first track to the last. Kelly Price is supremely talented, and I wish I'd known about it when it came out last year. I recently purchased Kelly Price's latest album, This is Who I am. I would like to share some of my thoughts regarding this CD. Let me preface this my saying Kelly has a superior voice and that is why I purchased the CD. She is incredibly uplifting; however, the duets on the CD ruined my listening experience.

The portions of the duet ballads where she sang were great and those portions that were sung by other people were subpar. For example, I LOVE that song "God is not dead" up until the point Joe Ligon sings. Maybe it's my taste but I did not care for his voice or Vanessa Bell Armstrong's. I bought the CD to hear Kelly...not these other vocalists. Their voices were much more old fashion than kelly's. As a listener and fan, I would recommend that Kelly do all the singing herself unless she has the opportunity to work with singers like Whitney, Aretha
or other people of their caliber.

We all know that this girl can SING!!! let's say that up front, however I did not like this CD. I think I was expecting a more traditional sound from her. With the exception of Healing, I did not like any of the songs on the cd.

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

OK, it's happened. Jessica Andrews, the teen sweetheart who steered clear of diva aspirations and bombastic production on her 1999 debut, Heart Shaped World, has succumbed. No, she's not dead. She's just artistically challenged, thanks to Byron Gallimore, the man who pushed Faith Hill into megawatt success. Now she's warbling for the soundtrack of Dawson's Creek (the album-closing "Show Me Heaven"), and largely mining the same musical wasteland as LeAnn Rimes. Gone is the refreshing innocence, soulfulness, and quiet charm of her first album, replaced by the manufactured emotions and aerobicized lyrics of Los Angeles pop. Example? How about "Uh uh, uh uh uh uh," from "I Don't Like Anyone"? That said, if generic, bouncy pop is your thing--especially when it's performed by someone who just got her driver's license--you're gonna eat this one with a big spoon. --Alanna Nash

when it comes to music,I'm very picky...I'm a professional musician/producer and I don't gush about many albums,however,when it comes to Jessica Andrews I make an exception...she is awesome
the songwriting on this and her previous album is just incredible
and her voice has a quality that the best pop singers out there should listen to and learn from

this is considered a 'country' CD but I disagree with that label,I think it is just good straight ahead music...there are no over the top banjos and fiddles (that ruin many a great cd *clearing my throat Dixie Chicks*)

'Who I Am' starts out with a beautiful song called 'now I know' and follows up with the very catchy 'Every Time' which really shows her best qualities,same with the next tune 'I Don't Like Anyone' it is just very cute with a touch of innocence that is extremely sexy,the highlight of the CD is next 'Karma' I play this song over and over...it warns of what happens when you treat people badly,it will come back to you,she sings it with conviction and has a sultry yet playful vibe in her voice that tops even Britney Spears,I wish more singers went for this approach...from there it's the equally cute and equally powerful 'helplessly hopelessly' from there is the biggest hit on the album the title cut 'who I am' which shows she can get serious when it's called for...this song is beautiful and shows the pride you can have in yourself ...the album ends with 'Show Me HEaven' which was actually at one time done by Robin Zander (singer of Cheap Trick) this song is beautiful and powerful and was actually on Dawson's Creek...all 12 songs are beautiful,expertly produced and show what a tremendous talent Jessica Andrews has...there is a reason out of the hundreds of singers out there,that she stands up with the top 3 in my book,and this shows why...I only wish she kept going in this direction,this CD is amazing

jessica andrews's songs are great for anyone even if u don't like country music, it's such a change from the "i hate my life, nobody loves me, i'm so alone" music its just refreshing to hear songs that have a positive outlook on life and love

Jessica's most successful album.......2005-04-04

Jessica began her recording career via a song (I will be there for you) on a soundtrack album (Prince of Egypt - Nashville). With encouraging response, the song also appeared on her debut album. It sold well but the follow-up (this album) did much better. This album is more pop sounding than its predecessor but is a fine example of contemporary country music and remains Jessica's most successful album to date.

Jessica has a superb voice that is equally effective on up-tempo songs and romantic ballads. All the songs here are originals except for an outstanding cover of Show me heaven, a song that Maria McKee (originally the lead singer of Lone Justice) had a UK number one hit with.

Although she didn't write or co-write the title track, I'm assuming that the writers knew Jessica reasonably well as it sounds like an autobiographical song. Jessica had a hand in writing one of the songs (Good friend to me, about a man who wants too much too soon).

Jessica's future in country music is uncertain but I, for one, hope that she makes a comeback and she's certainly young enough to so. Even if she doesn't, Jessica's first two albums (and maybe her third, which I haven't heard) are well worth a listen. I generally prefer her first album (although not by much) but this is the one that sold best, so I'm probably in the minority. You must make up your own mind.

Lovely voice, but forgettable album.......2004-08-24

It's a shame that Jessica Andrews got such poor material for her first CD. Her voice has tremendous range and talent, and she's a delightful young lady, but none of the tracks on this CD have staying power. "Who I Am - Rosemary's Granddaughter" is charming but easily forgettable and won't last as a long-term hit. I hope to see this promising talent stay on the scene, but she'll have to find better songwriters and promotors.

Classic!!.......2004-06-05

I love Jessica's music. She is probably one of the only artists I listen to that has a more happy 'poppy' sound. All the lyrics on this album are catchy and the music is perfect for a clear summer day. Jessica's voice is easy and soothing. Sure this could be considered pop, but I love it and am not ashamed to admit it. Jessica rocks!!

This is an artist that I found through pandora.com. I like the "Sunflower" song so much, I bought her CD.

As for the item that I received, the UPC symbol was scratched in such a way as to make me think that this was a promotional copy of the CD that someone got their hands on and sold.

Alice just keeps getting better!.......2007-05-21

Alice Peacock once again shines on this album! The songs, her voice, and the artful and engaging musicianship shine through. This compliments Alice's voice beautifully. Who I Am is one of those inspiring songs, I can listen to it when I'm having a bad day and am unsure of myself, it brings me to tears. This song is just beautiful! one of the most beautiful lyrics is "In the ways of life and art, I trust the wisdom of my heart"

Who I Am is classic Alice, with the seventies feel, but on a more updated level. The songs are like a snapshot in to Alice's life. If you are a fan, this album will inspire you! My favorite tracks are: Taught Me Well, If You Could Only Se Love, Time, Here I Go Again, Runaway Day, Different From the Rest, Who I Am and Anyone But Me. If you were a fan before this release, you'll be even more of one afterwards!

Peacock Mania.......2007-03-10

Do you ever buy a CD and then find that you are unable to stop playing it? And it becomes kind of an addiction until you almost want to just keep playing it until you get a little sick of it so you can stop? This is one of those CD's. It's beautiful from start to finish. I appreciate the bare, stripped down quality to some of the more emotional songs because these days it just feels like no matter how beautiful an artist's voice is, it gets covered up with too much production.
This CD is quite different from her first one in a way that I found refreshing. It's a little more grown up. I found it remniscent of Joni Mitchell and even Vonda Shepherd (before Ally McBeal). Just straight ahead masterful song writing with a beautiful voice that pulls at you and brings you into her emotional space. So, I guess what I'm saying is...I like it.

Sad Songs Say So Much.......2006-08-13

This is a very sad album. At least the first four songs are. I haven't been able to get past much more than that because they're so depressing. Alice takes both sides of having lost love or given it away. That's not to say it's a bad album, but right now in my life I can't take such sadness. It would put me over the edge and I'm nearly there as it is. This would make a great companion piece to Julian Lennon's "Photograph Smile". Both are exquisitely recorded and arranged and both have a fairly somber reflex. Alice has a great voice and is a strong writer. I can't imagine what inspired such sadness, though.

I really liked very much this album of Alice Peacock.This is the first time I buy an album of her. I think I'll be looking forward to buy more in the future.Her voice,lyrics and everything is great!

Well worth the price.......2006-04-13

I love this CD. No, despite its name it is not the "ultimate" collection, as scarcely could be expected from a single CD. It is heavy on Mikado, as others have stated. It leaves out things I would have included and includes things I would have left out. But the performances are wonderful, traditional and all you expect from G&S. Considering the low price, it is well worth including in your G&S collection ... as PART of your collection. After the disappointment of the godawful Opera World video series (Don't buy it!) this CD is a joy and a relief.

Not Exactly "The Ultimate" Collection..........2004-12-23

It seems that a collection of Gilbert & Sullivan music that has the name "The Ultimate Collection" in its title would boast a wide range of music, but I found the selection disappointing. Half of the tracks are songs from The Mikado, and the other half is divided between five... yes, FIVE other operettas. This means that the representation from each operetta is awfully scant. I would have liked to see less Mikado and more of everything else, and perhaps some highlights from the more obscure operettas (Princess Ida and The Sorcerer, namely).

In addition, while most of the music is very well performed, some of the vocalists either go a bit overboard or, at the very opposite end, seem to lack expression. For example, this Nanki-Poo (in The Mikado) seems to be overly occupied with vibrato. Katisha's voice is annoying, and The Mikado's low voice often seems to lack feeling and humor. The other idiosyncracies, like the very frightening evil laughing during "A More Humane Mikado" and hissing during "Three Little Maids" really bug me.

Then again, I'm new to Gilbert and Sullivan, and was introduced to the music through the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, which has a noticeably less operatic style, and hardly includes "stage noise"... so perhaps all this is the norm. Do listen to the tracks for yourself, though, before you purchase the CD. Personally, I find that the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, while considerably less ecompassing, is much lighthearted and easier listening.

Where's the chicks?!?!.......2003-05-15

It wouldn't be G&S if not for the ladies - so where are they? How could they leave out Mabel's aria - or Josephine's!? The only female aria included on this disc comes from Mikado, which is the least exciting (if G&S could be un-exciting) of the three! Everything else on the recording is great, but I am still quite disappointed.

Not quite the ultimate...........2002-03-25

This is a great collection, but unfortunately it doesn't have songs from all the works of G&S. Most notably, there is nothing from the "Yeoman of the Guard". I still reccommed it however as John Reed is wonderful!!

Great Music - Questionable Selection.......2002-02-05

It's an ongoing challenge to find a recording of Gilbert and Sullivan that combines premium musicality and great theatrical performance. This recording is a true gem on both fronts. My only complaint is that for a "Best of" collection, this compilation is Mikado-heavy and scarcely touches on highlights from other masterpieces, particularly The Pirates of Penzance. This would be my favorite G&S CD of all time, of only it included tracks like "When the Foeman Bares his Steel," "Poor Wand'ring One," and "Dry the Glist'ning Tear," but then again, I guess there's no real consensus as to which are Gilbert and Sullivan's best works, and there are too many to fit on one CD.

This album is one of Alan Jackson's best. I can't say it's my favorite, but it might as well be. I listen to it whenever me and my family go on vacation. It is awesome. I think everyone country music fan should own this album. Alan really proved himself this time.

One of Alan Jackson's Best CDs.......2004-05-26

I am a big fan of Alan Jackson, and "Who I Am" is, in my opinion, his best CD. There are two excellent re-makes of earlier songs on this CD, "Summertime Blues" and "Thank God For The Radio", and they are both very good. I especially like Jackson's guitar playing on "Summertime Blues". This CD spawned several other hits as well, such as "Livin' on Love", "Gone Country", "I Don't Even Know Your Name", and the title track. All songs on this CD are typical Jackson: great ballads intermixed with some fun, up-tempo songs. This disc has a little bit for everybody. Country fans are sure to enjoy this fine CD from Alan Jackson.

It's Alan Jackson's best album. Alan has produced a masterpiece of country music of all time! Songs like Summertime Blues, Living on Love, Gone Country, Who I am, Song For the Life, Thank God for the Radio are all classics! It is a true country album considering all songs, the style and the design in its entirety! In my point of view, it is also one of the best country album of all time! Following this I bought Alan's Greatest Hits Collection 1995, which introduced me to his earlier hits. Great artist. Great music.
