Customer Reviews:
Two tracks I really like.......2007-07-21
The Mission Impossible theme is performed well.
The Fireball theme is actually much improved on this version. I prefer the orchestra and the vocals over the original.
Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15
As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".
Mediocre.......2006-05-17
The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.
One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06
I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.
Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24
Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

Album Description
UK 5-track CD EP - Following on from the memorable moment when Mark Lanegan joined Greg Dulli & co on the August 2006 leg of their UK tour, their special chemistry has been laid down on an EP including their hypnotic cover of Massive Attack's 'Live With Me' with vocals from Lanegan who features alongside guest appearances from Joseph Arthur & Rick McCollum. One Little Indian. 2006.
Customer Reviews:
the last two songs are the best.......2007-07-27
The cover of Massive Attack's "Live With Me" is horrible compared to the original. Mark Lanegan's voice is not suited for it and the arrangement lacks the intensity of Massive Attack's version. Bad decision, Greg. "They Ride" is a good, moody rocker with a Whigs feel, and "The Lure Would Prove Too Much" caps off the EP nicely with some emotion. Get your hands on those two songs and you'll be good.
Cheaper on Itunes........2006-12-21
If you just want to download it, it's only $4.00 on itunes....
And you know you want it.
Twilight Singers can do no wrong in my book. Thanks for this last minute Christmas Present, Mr. Dulli. It is greatly appreciated.
Two Awsome Tracks!!!!.......2006-12-13
LIVE WITH ME - a Massive Attack cover with an A+ Mark Lanagan vocal. Fits in well with the excellent material on Lanagan's relativly recent "Bubblegum" album.
THEY RIDE - Greg Duli sings this one, and it has a vintage Afghan Whigs (Gentlemen era) vibe. This is the best song here, and possibly the best song Greg has recorded in many years.
This disc is supposedly an import (though it is hard to tell from where)and has a mighty high price tag. Still, THEY RIDE might actually be worth the $20 I spent on this baby. The other three tracks are fine too.

Nice addendum to 2006's "Powder Burns" album.......2007-02-10
The Twilight Singers released their fourth studio album "Powder Burns" in 2006, and it continued the excellent streak for front man (and ex-Afghan Whigs) Greg Dulli. This EP was originally released on iTunes in December, 2006 and is now also available as a physical EP.
"A Stitch in Time" (5 songs, 23 min.) starts off with a blazing cover of Massive Attack's "Live With Me" (not to be confused with the Rolling Stones track of the same name!). Joseph Arthur collaborates on "Sublime", a softer track. The next 2 songs are prime Twilight songs, "Flashback" and "They Ride" are barn-burners and could have easily fitted on the "Powder Burns" album. "The Lure Would Prove Too Much" is a beautiful ballad (in a Dulli way, of course), and a nice way to cap off this EP.
Greg Dulli keeps going at it. When the Afghan Whigs didn't find the commercial success to match the critical rave it earned, he went on and started the Twilight Singers. No longer worrying about finding mainstream audiences, Dulli keeps delighting, as shown with the "Powder Burns" album last year, and now again with this excellent EP. Highly recommended!

Takemitsu (1930-96) is Japan's greatest composer. He had a diverse musical career, which included work for films. His music partakes of aspects of postmodernism--serial construction, atonal modalities, unusual instrumentation--and all of it hypnotic. The works on this disc are for a chamber-size orchestra and are illuminated by the smaller forces. From Me Flows What You Call Time (1990) brings to mind a set of delicate, atonal wind chimes. Twill by Twilight--In Memory of Morton Feldman (1988) reflects Feldman's juxtapositions and separations, but with a bit more color. Requiem (1957), Takemitsu's first orchestral work, is stunning and very beautiful. --Paul Cook
Customer Reviews:
Hauntingly beautiful music, but the programming isn't sufficiently diverse.......2006-06-18
This Sony disc contains three pieces by the late Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu, whose untimely death in 1996 robbed the contemporary music world of one of its most distinctive figures. The first two were written during his late period, while the last is his first great work. Carl St. Clair conducts the Pacific Symphony Orchestra, with the Nexus percussion group (the dedicatee) on the first piece.
"From me flows what you call Time" (1990) for orchestra and five percussionists stands as one of Takemitsu's sure masterpieces. It might be called a concerto for percussion and orchestra, though that suggests some kind of opposition when in reality all elements of instrumentation seamlessly cooperate. The soloists' parts are very fascinating, especially when they play drums, giving a rougher tinge to the work rarely heard in the music of a composer more interested in glittery sounds. Towards the end the piece follows other works of this period ("Archipelago S.", "Ceremonial") in containing a spatial element: the percussionists play bells distantly located in various parts of the auditorium by means of coloured tape. "Twill by Twilight" (1988) was written in memory of Morton Feldman, and the title is both an allusion to Feldman's love of carpets and to Takemitsu's technique of textures that "weave" in and out of the piece, as well as a building up of the large from repetitions of the small as Feldman (in)famously did in his late pieces.
What is particularly amazing about the late Takemitsu is that he uses certain contemporary techniques, yet achieves a highly original effect different from all other composers. The pitches are generated with quasi-serialist techniques, and yet his music does not sound dry or academic, but rather highly transcendental. Timbre is a highly important element, but the result is more natural, suggestive of the outdoors, than the work of the spectralist composers. However, putting any two pieces from Takemitsu's late period together on disc is not ideal, as they are often too close stylistically and tend to dull the listener's senses. While beautiful in themselves, they don't do enough to distinguish themselves from other pieces of the same era.
The last piece is from a very different era, however. "Requiem" for strings (1957) was Takemitsu's first orchestral work and brought him to fame outside Japan when Stravinsky championed him for it. It shows him still under the influence of Messiaen and is a very moving set of incisive string figures, which can often sound quite agressive but nonetheless never break major laws of tonality. Unlike in his late period, characterized by a general evenness of dynamic, Takemitsu was not afraid here of going from the softest touches to major crescendi, although he still had not discovered the importance of timbre.
For those who have never heard Takemitsu's music, as an introduction I'd recommend the QUOTATION OF DREAM disc in Deutsche Grammophon's "20/21" series, which still has the same problem of putting Takemitsu's late works together, but which contains a whole world of interesting discoveries if you can manage to listen to each piece in isolation. Still, if you've come to enjoy the music of this singular voice in 20th century music, this Sony disc is a good find, and it's a budget purchase.
Beyond the recording.......2006-03-23
Most of the earlier reviews of "From me flows what you call time" are accurate--beautiful orchestrations, unexpected moments that emerge from silences or clusters of sound, and sometimes ravishing harmonies that swirl about for 35 minutes of truly breathtaking music. I was fortunate enough to attend the premiere of this piece, so when I listen I still see in my mind the amazing visual quality of a live performance. About one hundred specially tuned wind chimes from small to very large were made by Gary Kvistad specifically for Nexus and this piece. These chimes are hung from the ceiling of the performing hall and connected to the stage by long, multi-colored ribbons. When the chimes are played at various times during the performance, the sensation of being surrounded by these exquisite bells is overwhelming. The recording is wonderful, but if you ever have an opportunity to hear a live performance, it's well worth a long trip.
Haunting and Exotic.......2003-03-21
I've had this record for quite a while now. It's taken some time but the music has really grown on me. The surface glitter of the pieces is immediately apparent. What is not so obvious on first hearing is the profundity of the musical and spiritual thought in these works.
Toru Takemitsu was Japan's foremost composer in the late 20th century, and yet his music rarely sounds blatantly Japanese. The only obvious traditional influences on this CD come at the very beginning of the first piece, Through Me Flows What You Call Time. This work opens with a flute solo that contains techniques from the shakuhatchi repertoire. But quickly, the material of this solo becomes more western, sharing with Messiaen a love of symmetrical scales and modal devices. The piece uses this first flute solo as the spring board to a thirty five minute concerto grosso for orchestra and percussion ensemble. The music is lush, very romantic and colorful. The tonal language reminds me of a mix of Debussy, Scriabin and Messiaen. The melodic material is based primarily on a five note motif from the beginning of the flute solo which morphs into myriad forms. The percussion writing is exquisite...dominated by flashes of bell and cymbal color as well as ostinati on the marimba and outbursts from steel drums. The orchestra lends support mostly, occasionally singing out in an almost chorale-like texture. This piece is absolutely lovely.
The second work on the CD is Twill by Twilight. The work seems almost a carbon copy of Time except that it doesn't include the percussion group. While I find nothing particularly objectionable about the work, it isn't distinct enough to compete with the impression made by the first work. In fact...another choice for the CD might have been in order. There gets to be a monotonous quality by the end of this work. The CD is rounded out by Takemitsu's first piece to make an international spalsh...Requiem for String Orchestra. This piece is more Bergian than the others, though it too is accessible and shaded with tonal moments. It is deeply felt and a quite moving work.
Takemitsu was an enormously popular person as a composer. Any musician who knew him has only great things to say about him. This greatness of spirit comes through in the best of his music. Time and Requiem are among the finest neo-romantic pieces around. If you like Debussy, or Rautavaara, you will certainly love these pieces. Highly recommended.
Just about perfect.......2001-08-24
"From Me Flows What You Call Time" is one of the greatest pieces written in the late 20th century. The funny thing is that its hard to put a finger on why. This is some of the most original music you've ever heard. This literally sounds like nothing else I've ever heard. It is essentially a concerto for percussion quintet and it is fabulous what Takemitsu has done with the idea. Normally, a concerto for five percussionists would be bombastic and thunderous, but this is subtle & understated, but that's where the strength lies. The Pacific Orchestra provides a solid backing for the percussion. The percussion pretty much never ceases, the orchestra provides splashes & washes of color with flutes, occassional horn bursts, and lush strings. Its is shocking just how pretty & beautiful Takemitsu was able to make music with dissonance. The whole piece isn't that way, but sometimes you will hear something that doesn't quite sound right, but its still beautiful. He's the perfector of soft dissonance. I know the comparison has been run into the ground, but there is a lot of Debussy in Takemitsu, although he's more modern and has an obvious slant from the East. His music doesn't sound like Debussy's, you can just see the influence. Believe me, Takemitsu's is truly a unique voice in music.
"Twill by Twilight" (for orchestra) is in memory of Morton Feldman, and I must say I think its better than anything I've heard by Morton Feldman.
"Requiem" (for string orchestra) is also a nice piece, but the real showstopper on this disc is "From Me Flows What You Call Time." Get the disc for that.
Beautiful music.......2001-06-06
I'm a big admirer of Takemitsu, but mostly on account of his film music. While I've enjoyed his classical pieces, I've always appreciated the rawness and experimentation of his film work more. "From Me Flows What You Call Time" is the big exception... it's a truly mesmerizing piece. Like the best Takemitsu music, it can take you into another world. Frankly I don't have words to describe how wonderful this piece is. You just need to listen to it.

A copy in every household . . ........2003-02-09
This disc is so chock-full of classic scores from classic films that every movie-and-music lover should own a copy. Thanks to Robert Townson for producing this collection and the entire Varese film score catalog. My favorite tracks from this disc are "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf"; "Star Trek: The Motion Picture"; and "Midway".
A sampler feat. some of the greatest film scores in history........2001-09-06
Words cannot convey what a collection like this means to a film music collector such as myself. Varese Saraband has been releasing quality film scores and music for the last 20 plus years. My vinyl and CD collections burst with so much great stuff from Varese. One day I was looking in the bins of my local record store and noticed this little gem of a collection. I looked at it and saw a virtual cornucopia of the great film score cues for only $ (and 2 discs). So I purchased it and opened it up. Much to my surprise, the booklet is chock full of information about each scoring session and pictures to boot. I also learned more about some of these wonderful pieces as well. Well thanks to Mr. Townson and this nice collection, I plan to purchase some of the recordings these cues were released on since I don't own classics like Viva Zapata, Alex North's 2001, Superman (not the Varese version, I do have the other release), and Patton. Guess I will have to save a few pennies, but it will be worth it. I recommend this collection to anybody who wants to discover and learn about the history of film music. I also think it's a great listen from the first song to the last on both discs. My compliments to Varese on a great collection of classics (and keeping it under $).
"the man behind Varese Sarabande ~ Robert Townson".......2001-04-06
The music that this label releases is without a doubt in a class by themselves, always perfection. Here we have the 500th CD release from ~ "The Man Behind The Music" ~ Mr. Robert Townson. So much care is taken with each album, that you feel you are witnessing the birth of a newborn baby, and that may be just what it is.
For those of us who buy each album ~ people who work to create them ~ the artwork ~ musicians ~ and a list of some of the most talented composers and conductors ~ John Barry, Elmer Bernstein, John Debney, Georges Delerue, Cliff Eidelman, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, Michael Lang, Henry Mancini, Joel McNeely, Alfred Newman, Alex North, Miklos Rozsa, Dimitri Shostakovich, Frederic Talgorn, Franz Waxman, Rick Wentworth and John Williams ~ and as always the sound quality and performances by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Seattle Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra and National Philharmonic Orchestra is dynamically flawless and simply superb.
This economically priced 2-CD-Set ~ pure film score sampling ~ is worth it's weight in gold. One should not have a favorite from this vast collection, but if asked ~ it would be "TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD" (1962) composer Elmer Bernstein took it to the limit and beyond, the story-line, cast and score was the perfect marriage.
A big, big thank you to ~ Matthew Joseph Peak (cover/session photography) ~ Jonathan Allen, Geoff Foster, Bernie Kirsh, Mike Ross, Mike Sheady and Al Swanson (recording engineers) ~ Rich Breen (mastering engineer) ~ and for the extensive 28 page liner-note booklet featuring "behind the scenes" memories of these past 500 albums, may we look forward to future classics on the next 500 CD's from producer...ROBERT TOWNSON!

These 26 selections, recorded from 1904 to 1922, document the work of an important American player and band composer. Despite the trivial nature of most of the music, one can't help listening to Herbert Clarke's playing with respect and growing affection. He was a most elegant player, with a beautiful tone that comes across even in the earliest of these recordings. The showiest pieces, which can be quite dazzling, are still performed with taste and musicianship. This disc is an important sound document, and the transfers from even the earliest of the recordings are surprisingly listenable. Highly recommended to all brass and nostalgia lovers. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant playing transcending primitive recording technique.......2001-01-11
Hearing this CD -- despite the distracting surface noise from the primative acoustic recordings from which this CD was remastered -- I appreciate for the first time the greatness of Clarke as a cornet soloist. If he is not the greatest to date, he is surely one of the giants upon whose shoulders modern virtuosi of the trumpet (which has pretty much replaced the cornet) stand.
Clarke's sheer artistry in both composition and performance still dazzle and his interpretive ability brings to life some of the 'tear jerkers' of the golden age of popular brass music in a way no modern performance comes close to.
Although on first hearing one could be very much distracted by the primitive recordings, the brass player soon focuses on Clarke's playing so completely that the the surface noise disappears.
Every trumpet player and cornetist, more, every brass player and lover of band music, should own a copy.
The Master of the Cornet.......2001-01-04
God bless Crystal Records for taking the time to re-issue these extremely rare and valuable recordings from an unfortunately neglected giant in American musical history. Most people today don't realise how famous and influential Mr. Clarke and his peers (Sousa, Pryor et. al.)were on the American musical scene at the beginning of the Twentieth century. It is very important that these recordings (and others from this period, the birth of sound recording) be preserved for future generations.
As for those who could not stand the "hiss" on these recordings, how spoiled can you be? You simply miss the point of all this. We all know that these records were made during the infancy of the recording industry, and that they didn't have the technology we now have. I find it thrilling to listen to them just as they are. Recorded sound is the closest we have to time travel, and I find it fascinating to listen to these recordings as though I was there when they were first made. And most of all, through the marvel of recorded sound (Mr. Sousa notwithstanding) I can listen today to the greatest cornetist who ever lived, even though he passed away over 50 years ago.
Hopefully Crystal Records will someday put out an anthology of original Sousa and Pryor Band recordings.
Clarke is the cornet master!.......2000-08-03
Herbert Clarke is the finest cornetist the planet has ever seen. The technical brilliance on Carnival is just breathtaking. The sound quality of the recording is little hinderance on the true genius behind this man's playing. Don't let the hiss bother you!!!
heartbreaking music from a bygone era.......2000-03-22
These vintage recordings would have been otherwise lost to us--and a great loss at that. Clarke plays so beautifully, esp. those pieces that he wrote. It's notall oom-paa-paa, but music that is deeply affecting and stirring. This is the effect that Wynton Marsalis was going for in his "Carneval." While Marsalis's album is a wonderful tribute, this is the original. A must-have for any serious trumpet player.
Be careful.......1999-09-14
Watch out if you want to buy this cd! It's a good cd with Herbert Clarke playing some of his own pieces the way they should be played...but the recording is TERRIBLE! Naturally, it's a 1904 recording! But the hiss for the first half of the cd is almost painful. It's NOT something you can just ignore, so don't be caught unawares.

Music for Falling in Love.......2001-05-06
If you want to buy a really good CD for someone you care about, or just for yourself, this one is going to be much enjoyed by everyone.
Andre Gagnon plays glorious, beautiful music, and on this CD they are all familiar -- big hits of romance like My Funny Valentine, The Way You Look Tonight (Lovely, never never change, keep that breathless charm...) Non Dimenticar, and tons of others.
Turn it down low and it's the perfect dinner party music. Turn it up for a "party" party and get right into that smoochy slow dancing.
Definitely recomment this. Definitely worth the money.

Customer Reviews:
Pretty good early Stratovarius.......2007-04-21
You know, it is funny when 1 album, a sophmore effort at that, could make or break someone's ultimate opinion of a band. I suppose that it is no wonder that most of the music community seems so fickle when it comes to music and the tween generation is so easily swayed to what someone deems a 'good' music. (I'll get off the soapbox for a moment...)
Twilight Time is a good disc from a great power metal band. When listening to this album though, one must realize that this was back in the early 90's and a sophmore effort by this band. The music is quite good, but also quite empty in some sections. For me, the standout songs are Out of the Shadows, the Hands of Time, and Twilight Time. These songs are quite commercial but do sound good. This album does chronicle the journey that Stratovarius has been on. It does not sound like the newer albums, but you can hear hints of it starting here. There is a very airy quality to it with more ethereal keyboards rather than the soloing that Jens does on the newer music. Timo Tolkki also sings on this album and his voice is good, but it just does not come across as a 'dedicated lead singer' type voice (like Timo Kotipelto's does). The music has a lot of reverb on it. I personally like it, because I like 80's music. If you listen to this one and then Dreamscape, this one will be more commercial than Dreamscape. Dreamscape is much darker thatn Twilight Time. If you compare this one to any from Episode to now, it will be much different. If you are a collector of Strato music, then get this one. If you like 80's metal not unlike Yngwie Malmsteen, then you will like parts of this album. If you are expecting music like what Strato sounds like today, you will be not be terribly happy. Overall though, it is a good listen and has neat parts in it.
Oooh the early days.......2006-01-11
Yes the early days when Timo Tolkki was on vocals. Perhaps in a more forgiving time I'd love stuff like the ripping lead cut which psychologically is pretty mature stuff for a young rock band. And lets face it - these guys were just starting out at this point.
And that's just it - there isn't much here to tell you that these guys would later write stuff like Black Diamond or Hunting High & Low. And without the signature vox of one Timo Kotipelto it doesn't feel like Stratovarius to a later convert like me. And a poor mix doesn't really help but they probably had to hide the vocals a bit.... sorry Mr Tolkki.
It won't lead us into the light.......2005-07-08
As I said in Episode review don't believe the positive reviwers on this cd.
Timo Tolkki, with evidence, isn't as good as Kotipelto. However,he has the potiential
to share the lead vocals ,not be as a backing. It could always be done like the
Gallagher brothers from Oasis do. Unhappily, he palled on singing lead in Stratovarius.
What a pity.The truth is:
I liked half of this album. The bad half is consisted of weak and average songs.
The litter: The hills have eyes (A rigmarole. It drags), Madness strikes at midnight
(lack of voice variety, not quality) and Metal Frenzy ( cool guitaring, but the repetition lets it get lost)
The regular:and Twilight time( The start is Ok, repetitive chorus on opposite)
The worths:
The hands of time, Lead us into the light (a ballad as good as Tears of ice from Dreamspace), Break the ice (It has very few melodies, good midway solo, heavier)
and Out of the shadows (the only gem; beautiful riff , excellent chorus and melody)
Stratovarius stumbled in Twilight Time. Buy it for curiosity, or if you are a completist.
Avoid trying to it if you're new to the band.
With Tolkki's vocals, Dreamspace is far better.
I would give it 2.5 stars, but Out of the shadows provides the third star for its quality.
Groundbreaking 2nd album.......2005-07-02
Huge improvement over their debut Fright Night. Songwriting is almost as good as on Dreamspace even though more straightforward. Production also head above better but still lacks a bit. Twilight Time isn't as melodic or powerful as for example Fourth Dimension. It combines carefully crafted melodies and hooks (typical for Stratovarius' later albums) with more traditional and straightforward heavy metal creating very unique sound that was early Stratovarius. The strong aspect of this album is the fact that there ain't really any weak songs even though few of them might be not-so-likeable at first.
"Break the Ice" is a great hard rocker with surprisingly strong vocals from Tolkki (and his English pronounciation is actually better than Kotipelto's).
"The Hands of Time" is the most groundbreaking song (and also one of their all time best) with mindblowing beginning that clearly inspired many musicians like Edguy's Tobias Sammett (listen to the song "Vain Glory Opera", very similar beginning isn't it).
"Madness Strikes at Midnight" is the first of two more traditional metal tracks with eerie melody in the beginning, somehow catchy with nice solo.
"Twilight Time" also one of all time best, quite varied with changing tempo, nice slow chorus and heavy riffing and again nice solo.
"The Hills Have Eyes" a bit similar with "Madness..", eerie beginning but afterwards turns out as a nice rocker with catchy groove.
"Out of the Shadows" sounds very happy and light after few heavier songs, slightly similar with "The Hands of Time" with very catchy chorus.
"Lead Us in to the Light" fantastic and almost hypnotic slow-tempo epic-ballad-thing, one of the most succesful compositions from Tolkki.
Very underrated album and one of Stratovarius' finest moments. This album clearly shows that Tolkki had vision that he succesfully continued to fulfil on Dreamspace. It's creative in certain limits, not like Dreamspace which is creative as a whole. This is the last Strato album where you can still hear traditional 80's heavy metal influences elsewhere than just in solos. I'll give this one 4.5 stars!
Why does this band receive so much dirt?.......2005-03-02
I do not own Stratovarius' sophomore effort, 1992's 'Twilight Time,' but I have listened to clips of this album (each lasting about a minute or so) on their website. I read one review of this that said "THIS is how you make B-O-R-I-N-G power metal!" Well, I have read both positive and negative reviews of not only this album, but the rest of the band's catalogue, and what I must say is this: WHY must everyone pile dirt upon this band constantly?! I do admit, I have seen a few recycled riffs and drum beats. But I think that the real problem was Tolkki's waning mental health, which might have been partially responsible for this dirt (i.e. a bit of a creative slump.) But ultimately, I think that this band deserves a fair amount of credit. So does this album. Though rare, the first 7 Stratovarius CDs are well worth your money.
This one is ultimately not their best one, but it is still a great piece of art from Finland's finest. Some of my personal favorite tracks are as follows: My favorite track on the album is "The Hands of Time," it's fast, heavy, and conentrates a fair amount on the synths, which is a plus. Also awesome are the title track and "Break The Ice," which are perfect mid-tempo heavy rockers. Try to find this if you possibly can (try somewhere like Newbury Comics, Tower, or Bull Moose music, not a little local record store.) Ultimately, I just don't feel that Stratovarius deserve the dirt that they get.

Metropolitan Opera soprano Heidi Grant Murphy and her husband, the pianist and conductor Kevin Murphy (also of the Met), conceived the concept for this recording with guidance from their friend and Met colleague, Ken Noda. The intent was to convey a feeling of infinite tranquillity, reverie, dreaminess, and tenderness. Though the disk's packaging--including its title--may strike some as slightly drippy, the recording deserves high praise on musical grounds. The selection of repertoire is excellent, and as a result, the disk's overall feeling is one of serene continuity. As interpreter, Heidi Grant Murphy brings out the many subtly-shaded moods in this music, and her voice is stunning without calling undue attention to itself. It is by turns quiet, close, tender, and yielding. It's a special disk to have. --Gwendolyn Freed
Customer Reviews:
Truly lovely.......2006-08-23
Ms. Grant Murphy has an exquisitely tuned and toned soprano, and her husband, Mr. Murphy, accompanies and supports with great delicacy and musicality. The selections are wide-ranging and eclectic, and I found most of the disc utterly entrancing. Heidi Grant Murphy's voice is clear, high, pure and uniquely beautiful in timbre. I had the great pleasure of hearing her live in concert in 2005 with the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood, in Mahler, and on the strength of that decided to purchase this CD. If pressed to find what I considered to be a weak spot, I would have to say that I did not find Ms. Grant Murphy's voice particularly suited to "O quand je dors", although the duo performance of that song was as thoroughly musically informed and well-conceived as any of the other selections included. I think this is quite a remarkable collection and I would definitely recommend it to lovers of art song.
Brilliant!.......2003-12-30
Seems like Laura, who gave a terrible review, is a bit jealous! She must have been competing with Heidi and was not picked. It is obvious she is terribly resentful of Heidi's beautiful voice and talent. Heidi's voice is angelic and peaceful. I highly reccommend all of her CD's. Her husband Kevin and she make a great pair and their talents are amazing! Keep them coming Heidi. As for you Laura, keep trying. Besides the attitude and resntment, you must not have the talent you thought you possessed.
Not worth the money!.......2000-11-26
Looking at the high praise this mediocre recording receives in the other reviews, I'm wondering whether I listened to the same one. I bought this recording with high hopes, but having never listened to her voice - I regret it. The material she performs is good (if somewhat standard), but her voice is really...weird. It has a Beverly Sills (past the golden years) wobble in it that she seems to think is a healthy vibrato. I know she was pulled out of Indiana U early for a Met contract, and I think they did her a disservice - her technique is horrible. She does have good control of her pianissimi, but as a whole, the recording is most disappointing. In the Rach, her fortes are frighteningly bad, almost embarassing. How does this woman sing at the met?
A Beautiful Voice.......2000-02-25
Heidi Garant Murphy is an exceptional singer. The magical tone of her voice is matched by intelligent musicianship. I recently (Feb 10) saw her as Sophie in Der Rosenkvalier at the Met. A wonderful performance, in which she was clearly the interpreter closest to what I think Strauss had in mind. She also had the most beautiful voice (although Fleming was also in excellent voice) This disc is another wonderful example or her singing. Kevin Murphy, who is her husband, provides a sensitive piano accompaniment. This disk is not background music. The sensitive interpretations require your complete attention to be appreciated.
Buy!.......2000-02-15
Judging from most reviews in the classical genre, I am not qualified to evaluate Twilight & Innocence for its technical merits, but let me say that Heidi Grant Murphy has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard. The selections, and lovely piano accompaniment are a perfect showcase for her talent. I've worn out my repeat button on V'adoro, pupille...heidi and kevin, encore!
