5 out of 5 stars Beyond the Blues Brothers.......2007-05-12

If you loved "Hold on, I'm Commin'" in the movie "The Blues Brothers" but know little else about Sam & Dave, buy this CD. The quality of the sound is great and the selection even better. The energy of the singers is contagious and the arrangements on the album are superb. As one of their songs has it, "Wrap it up, I'll take it!"

5 out of 5 stars Wow! This is an amazing cd!.......2006-03-17

I was not really into Sam & Dave before I bought this cd. I must say it is excellent. Their interaction with each other is amazing. They really define the 'gospel' based side of RnB which is called, of course, Soul Music. The intense vocal theatrics they exude are truly astonishing. And even better this cd has all of the original singles not the ones that were re-sung by the duo, which still sounded good but were no where near as intense and raw as the originals. The remastering is excellent, job very, very well done. After I heard the 'real' version of "Hold On! I'm Comin'" I was hooked. But the energy and excitement dont end there, they also were exceptional at heavy ballads. Two of the three ballads here are heavy and they really dig into them. It's almost too much to listen to them because the emotion they put forth is earthshattering. It is also very fun to listen to. While listening close to some of the lyrics on some of the songs I laughed a little at what they were talking about, case in point "I take what I want." This is very, very enjoyable and it has made me a Sam & Dave fan for life. I now plan on getting all of their studio albums with Stax. Enjoy!!!

5 out of 5 stars Southern fried soul! SIZZLIN'.......2005-06-14

there was some footage and stuff about these two guys on Soul Deep, the program that followed the evoloution of soul music.
One show was on the Southern Soul sensation and Staxx records.
Basically, Sam and Dave were components, along with Otis, Wilson Pickett and others, that put the raw, unpolished, and dirty sound of Memphis on the map. The band to give em all the rough and sharp edge was Booker T and the MG's. Steve Cropper has become something of a Legend to me over the last few informative years. His guitar can be heard on all of the aforementioned, and characterizes the sound with that chink style and raw licks he manipulated to a new level.

That sound was the perfect tool for Sam and Dave, who were having trouble breaking the scene. The ever resourcful Jerry wexler did what he did with Pickett and gave the boys the Staxx treatment. essentially, if you can't move to this, then your paralized! The one-upmanship is eveident in the chemistry the experience. Seeing them perform is another thing entirely!

Nice sound on the remaster, and ALL the grooves are here for the licking!

Soul at it's funkiest.

5 out of 5 stars Classic, classic, classic.......2005-03-16

You can't consider yourself afficionato of 60s soul music if you do not have Sam and Dave in your collection. Unparralleled horn section backing, the stuff that influenced Blood, Sweat and Tears more than they will ever admit, Sam and Dave were the funky, street-wise and rugged soul music that Motown was too perfectly coiffed and dressed up to do.

5 out of 5 stars HORNS FOR ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-04-16

Summer's near and what better time to celebrate the funk of Sam and Dave, than by purchasing this great collection of music and blaring it on your car stereo with the windows rolled down, so you can expose it to anybody you happen to drive by. Get everyone around you dancing and feeling good!!!!!
A definite A+ as far as greatest hits go. Good remastering, great selection of hits and a mini booklet to boot.
If you love horns, then what are you waiting for??!!
GO BUY IT ALREADY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This music is so fiery that merely listening to will bring sweat to your brow. But the creators of such classics as "Soul Man" and "Hold On, I'm Coming" won't stand just for listening. The energy between Sam and Dave is infectious enough to propel you to your feet. Their harmonies are tight, echoed by thrilling horn riffs, bursts of guitar solos, and when it's all about to explode, they settle back with a ballad like "When Something Is Wrong with My Baby" that's every bit as moving as their uptempo tracks. This is what happens when church music goes clubbing. --Robert Gordon

I would love to review the item I ordered, but I never received it, and I have never received a refund!

4 out of 5 stars Nice.......2007-02-06

It's clearly an older disc, and it sounds like they dubbed it straight from the reel. I love that warm sound, especially with music like this.

5 out of 5 stars AND So Much More.......2007-01-10

The world of show business is not a place where shrinking violets bloom. On the contrary, it is known for bombast, opportunism, and egos larger and more gaseous than zeppelins.

Consequently it is rare indeed to find an act featuring two prodigious talents who have chosen to share billing equally. This extraordinary gesture of selflessness is indicated by the word - AND - which links the two names.

A small handful of examples comes to mind where two geniuses are paired. The Captain And Tennille, of course, The Fluorescent Leech And Eddie, and the late lamented duo, Wayland Flowers And Madame who, tragically, died simultaneously.

Add to this distinguished list the names, Sam And Dave. These powerhouse singers, who secured their place in history with a few hits covered by shabby second-stringers, simply define everything that is good about R&B. In fact, if you were beginning an R&B collection, this outstanding CD would be an excellent place to start.

You'll find barnburners like Soul Man and I Thank You, among many others, but you may be surprised how these guys work a ballad. The Best Of Sam AND Dave delivers the goods; and so much more.

5 out of 5 stars We got a good quality one, no "hissing".......2006-11-08

I have this one too - BEST OF SAM & DAVE, and although a couple other reviewers stated that there was hissing on the SOOTHE ME track, my copy does not have hissing or any other sound distortion. On the whole, this collection is a pretty good sampler of their rollin' best.

3 out of 5 stars Sam Cooke.......2007-06-13

I purchased this for the more popular hits, like "Cupid." All in all a good CD, some of the other songs are a little too dated.

5 out of 5 stars Gone But Not Forgotten.......2007-02-20

Sam Cooke should be considered like Nat King Cole and Johnny Mathis as an expert of soul and pop. With an occasional format on oldies' stations, Sam Cooke's legacy deserves a revival for uninitiated audiences. Remarkably, the production of his songs is clear and smooth, fitting for his voice. The instrumentation and backing vocals did the soul singer proud. He could do pop crooner songs with prefection on "Only Sixteen," "What a Wonderful World," and "Cupid". But his festive party numbers could still bring the kids onto the dancefloor, including "Everybody Loves to Cha Cha Cha," and "Twistin' the Night Away,". To further his repertoire, "Bring It on Home to Me" showcases a rockabilly start and a soulful piano for a substantive hidden nugget waiting to be rediscovered. The engaging lyrics are quick to please, but "Chain Gang" increases the scope to social commentary. The three bonus tracks sound like they belonged there in the first place, rather than tiresome encores. Only one complaint is deserved, with the quality and quantity of great Sam Cooke songs, they don't include "Another Saturday Night," one of his greatest songs. I can only conjecture that there were some copyright disputes, but this omission doesn't stop the album from its high stature.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Collection.......2005-10-03

when I was a Kid this was my first introduction to Sam Cooke. His Vocals&Writing are timeless. His Voice covered a wide range of styles&Continues to Influence Generations upon Generations of Artists. His Tone alone was so clear&Clean. He was a Singer's Singer. He is a Mount Rushmore Artist.truly One of a Kind.

3 out of 5 stars Bonus Tracks Still Leave Artist Shortchanged.......2005-09-23

For more than two decades, the original 12-track release of 1962's THE BEST OF SAM COOKE (see my review) was the most complete collection of his hits. In 1986, it was replaced by the double-LP THE MAN AND HIS MUSIC (now out of print). In 2003, ABKCO released the definitive 30-track PORTRAIT OF A LEGEND (see my review).

Now, two years later, RCA upgrades THE BEST OF by adding three bonus tracks: "Win Your Love For Me" (No. 22, 1958), "You Were Made for Me" (No. 27, 1958) and "Nothing Can Change This Love" (No. 12, 1962). Unfortunately, this collection still ends with 1962 which means it is still missing major hits like "Another Saturday Night," "Shake" and the posthumously released classic "A Change Is Gonna Come."

The bottom line is this: Sam Cooke is the most influential soul singer of the past half century, and any serious music collection must include at least one Sam Cook album. But the album to get is PORTRAIT OF A LEGEND. Why? It includes all 15 tracks from THE BEST OF, plus 15 more (including the three mentioned above). The three-star rating isn't for the music (that's five-star!), it's for shortchanging such an influential artist.

5 out of 5 stars Memory Lane.......2006-11-18

Haven't rec'd. this CD yet, but I grew up with this music and have been looking to add it to my collection. Although the music tracks do mimic each other, there are alot of great memories associated with them. I've found that not to many people have ever heard of the Sam, they're missing out!

4 out of 5 stars A dozen tracks from the two-hit wonders, Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs.......2005-08-05

The thing about listening to the best of Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs is that you have done that by the time you get to the third track on this Millennium Collection done for the 20th Century Masters series. "Wooly Bully" made it to #2 on the Billboard singles chart in 1965 and the next year "Li'l Red Riding Hood" did the same. Although the group had another seven songs that made it to the charts (six of which are included in this twelve-track collection), none of them made it to the Top 20. "Ju Ju Hand" got to #26 and "Ring Dang Doo" to #33 in 1965, while in 1966 "Red Hot" came in at #82 and "The Hair on My Chinny Chin Chin" made it all the way to #22. In 1967, "Black Sheep" (the missing one) went to #68, "How Do You Catch a Girl" topped out at #27, and "Oh That's Good, No That's Bad" went to #54. I am surprised that when you have such a limited number of songs that can be labeled hits that one would be missing, but there is no reason to believe it is any great loss. The only songs that reek of desperation is "Pharaoh A Go-Go," which is a blatant effort to sound as much like "Wooly Bully" as musically possible, the same way "The Hair on My Chinny Chin Chin" echoes "Li'l Red Riding Hood." Still, for a two-hit wonder, Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs certainly stake out their territory and stick to it and if you remember that we are talking the mid-1960s and think of them more as competition for the likes of the Dave Clark Five and the Troggs instead of the Beatles and the Beach Boys you can have a better appreciation of their music.

Sam the Sham was really Domingo Samudio, who got the name because because of doubts about his abilities to be a lead singer in a rock group. Formed in Dallas, the Pharaohs consisted of Ray Stinnet on guitar, David Martin on bass, Butch Gibson playing saxophone, and Jerry Patterson on drums. In terms of music history the group has a small claim to fame in that "Wooly Bully," written about Samudio's cat, introduced Tex-Mex rhythms to popular rock 'n' roll. The problem was that their two big hits defined them as a novelty act (which was certainly reinforced by songs like "I Couldn't Spell !! *@!"), and despite the name that did not set well with Sam the Sham, who broke up the group in 1967 and tried unsuccessfully to find musical legitimacy on his own. In retrospect "Wooly Bully" is one of those rock classics where everything wrong comes out right, and if that is your musical legacy you are ahead of the game. The only concern here is whether you already have those first two tracks, because if you do that decreases the need for picking up this collection. But if you like the fun aspects of rock and roll that emerged in the American response to the British Invasion, not to mention music where the beat drives the songs, then Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs are a Sixties garage band worth listening to again.

5 out of 5 stars More like Sam the Sham & the awsome.......2004-10-03

I was looking for a Sam the Sham and the Pharaos CD high and low about a year before this CD came out. I finally found one and listened to it all the time. There were about thirty songs and after a while I would just skip through the CD to the good ones. This 20th Century Masters CD has all the good songs without any of the songs that are just okay. Plus it's allot less money.

5 out of 5 stars This album brings back a lot of memories.......2002-05-29

When I was a teen growing up in Kansas City in the 70's this was the only Sam Cooke lp available for years. I think for that whole decade this was the only album available of Sam's secular recordings. RCA or should I say Allen Klein just didn't bother releasing anything else except this album. Consequently when I purchased these albums I played the heck out of them and after they got real poppy and scratchy sounding I would go back to the record store and buy another copy. This one album was always available with no problem. But it served it's purpose for me-songs like You send me,Chain Gang,Sad mood,I love you for sentimental reasons,Twisting the night away, all turned me into a major Cooke fan and regardless of the quality it sure feels good to still see that ole yellow background with Sam's smiling face. I come from the hunger period of record collecting where quality never was paramount over just plain being able to find the record and being able to listen to it.That my friend was the pure joy of it all. This cd is still worth the price of admission.

1 out of 5 stars Avoid this CD! Buy Sam Cooke-Greatest Hits instead........2001-02-04

Sam Cooke recorded wonderful music but these recordings are not given justice on this CD. This is almost the same track listing as the LP of the same name and layout. This CD was put out when CD's first hit. Consequently, it is not really mastered for CD (although it says it is remastered). The volume on this CD is very, very, very low. There are no dynamics. There are only 13 songs (one is an alternate recording). Clearly, this disc does not take advatage of the sonic possibilities of the the CD, nor does it take advantage of the amount of music CD's can accomodate. The 1998 release, Sam Cooke-Greatest Hits, has 20 songs and is really mastered for CD.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great CD........2000-12-20

Nearly all the best here (at least one hit is missing). One thing I don't like about this cd is that is needs to be remastered. The volume is very low! No liner notes.

5 out of 5 stars A Solid 1957-1962 Overview.......2000-07-14

There's a timeless quality to Sam Cooke's music. And while he's been imitated from Dr. Hook and the Animals to Rod Stewart and Art Garfunkel, they've never matched the soulfulness of these originals. It's too bad the 2-disc collection The Man And His Music (1986) is out of print. While The Best Of does a fine job of covering his early commercial peak (1957-1962), it overlooks his gospel music and his post-1962 output. This is a fine collection and I have it on vinyl, but if you're upgrading to a CD release, go with 1998's Greatest Hits which includes everything on this album (except "Summertime") plus an additional nine songs.

    5 out of 5 stars Great.......2000-09-08

I've only the old LP in the moment, but my heart thirsts to hear everything of this great voice. It's not easy to get music from Sam Harris in Germany. But now I buy EVERYTHING.

5 out of 5 stars This disc is addictive!.......2000-05-16

Having heard Sam Harris' rendition of "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off" on his Standard Time album while watching my nose hair grow, I was excited to discover such a wonderful talent.

What a profound enjoyment this album was. It's a cross between a better Barbara Streisand and Celine Dion. Spend your money!

Having heard Sam Harris' rendition of "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off" on his Standard Time album while watching Chicago's Hubbard Street dance group, I was excited to discover such a wonderful talent.

What a profound disappointment this album was. It's a cross between early Barbara Streisand and the Village People. Save your money!

5 out of 5 stars Makes me SHIVER!.......2000-02-25

What a great collection of tracks. Brings me back to the thrill of seeing Sam Harris on Star Search. So much has happened since then, television series, movies, both of his first CDs going gold, staring on Broadway and being nominated for a Tony. I am honored to say I am still a fan and have grown with him and his constant growth. If you are a fan, get this CD just to remember the thrill of hearing "Over the rainbow" WOW! Back at that time, all we had were weak singers like Paul Young (where is he today and who cares?) so when Sam hit the stage, history was made.

But I can never tire of "Rainbow", that song still makes me shiver. Another song from Star Search I remember was "Going down to your river" and he actually just recorded it for his latest CD "Revival" which blows Labelle right out of the water.

    Forever for you!

The parade of one-hit wonders who populated large chunks of the pop charts in the 1960s and '70s could usually be categorized two ways: marginal talents overly burnished with slick production and the best studio chops money could buy, or hard-rocking garage gods who finally caught a break. Come to think of it, things haven't changed much! Dallas's Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs fell firmly into the latter category, scoring big in '65 with the novelty song "Wooly Bully" and following it with the lesser hit "Little Red Riding Hood." Like ? and the Mysterians and the Sir Douglas Quintet, Sam (Domingo Samudio; "the Sham" a self-deprecating jab at his vocal talents) and the Pharaohs pioneered fusing the sounds and rhythms of Tex-Mex border music into pop, though it would take critics a decade or two to catch on. To contemporary listeners, they were just a monster party band--one that this generous, well-chosen collection puts in better perspective. Their initial novelty status kept proceedings decidedly on the loopy side, as tracks like "Pharaoh-a-Go-Go" and "Ring Dang Doo" attest. Still, there's a raw, rootsy rock & roll frenzy here that's as infectious as it is unhinged. Hail Sam and the Pharaohs, garage rock royalty! --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars They Did Something The Beatles Couldn't Do.......2007-07-31

Not only were they not the greatest R&R band ever, as one reviewer boldly suggests, but I doubt that they'd make the Top 25 in any poll. However, they were loads of fun and they did accomplish something that not even The Beatles could with their long string of hits: they had one of their top songs cross over to the R&B charts [Wooly Bully which reached # 2 Billboard Hot 100 and # 31 R&B in summer 1965 for the MGM label].

With its opening UNO, DOS, TRES, QUATRO it is one of the most identifiable sounds of the 1960s and was written by the group's leader, Domingo "Sam" Samudio of Dallas, Texas and actually released the year before on the small XL label before being picked up by MGM.

Following that auspicious beginning their next three offerings dipped considerably on the charts, with Ju Ju Hand reaching # 26 in August, Ring Dang Doo topping out at # 33 in November b/w Don't Try It, and Red Hot, the legendary rockabilly tune first recorded in 1955 for Sun by Billy "The Kid" Emerson, peaking at # 82 in February 1966 b/w A Long Long Way.

But they returned to the # 2 position with Lil' Red Riding Hood in the summer of 1966, and in November the sequel The Hair On My Chinny Chin Chin climbed to # 22 b/w their comical take on The In Crowd, (I'm In With) The Out Crowd. Early in 1967 they were back with How Do You Catch A Girl? [# 27], and in April of that year came the funny Oh That's Good, No That's Bad [# 54] b/w Take What You Can Get.

Their final Top 100 came in summer 1967 when Black Sheep struggled to reach # 68, although you have to wonder why the funny Banned In Boston could not climb higher than # 117 Hot 100 "bubble under" in 1967 b/w Money's My Problem, and the equally-hilarious I Couldn't Spell Pthhht did not fare better than # 120 "bubble under" in 1968.

The B-sides omitted are Ain't Gonna Move [b/o their first hit], Love Me Like Before [b/o Lil' Red Riding Hood], The Love You Left Behind [b/o How Do You Catch A Girl?], and My Day's Gonna Come [b/o Black Sheep]. Track 19 was a failed 1968 single, while tracks 3, 5, 7, 14, 17, and 20 are from their several albums.

The sound quality is excellent, and with the insert you get the original vinyl-version notes written by Peter Zaremba of New York in 1985, six more pages by Bob Kruse of Boston written for this edition in 1997, a complete discography of the contents, and several more photos of the group, which also included Ray Stinnet, Jerry Patterson, Butch Gibson, and David Martin, who passed away in 1987 at age 50.

Just a fun album to have.

5 out of 5 stars Party 'til you're done partying (which is never)!!!.......2007-07-26

If it's even possible, Sam the Sham's music is even more heroically stupid than the Ramones'. After all, those four boys from Brooklyn wrote coherent songs, with different melodies and lyrics about cars and girls and hamburgers. The Pharoahs, on the other hand, didn't even try. Not only did all of their best songs sound the same (I mean, literally, the friggin' same), but seriously, what hell was "Wooly Bully" supposed to be about? Or "Ring Dang Do?" Or "Ju Ju Hand?" The answer, of course, is who cares?! If you actually find yourelf looking for deeper meaning in songs "Monkey See Monkey Do," "Red Hot," or "Sorry 'bout That," you're probably wearing a tin foil hat. And as for the songs sounding the same, again, who cares? Why mess with a winning formula.

And it is a winning formula. See, unlike the Ramones, the Pharaohs actually managed to hit the charts. Twice! Just goes to show ya that record buyers in the 60s had waaaaaaaaaay better taste than the kid o' the 70s. The first hit was the now world famous "Wooly Bully," a pounding dumb-dumb anthem with a ludicrously catchy vocal, a hypnotic pounding drumline (it seriously sounds like some guy was just hitting a snare drum over and over again), and a hypno-riffic organ (played by Sam himself, who, as legend has it, only knew five chords!). The only thing more incredible than the idea that anyone that that this would work is that it actually does- it's so damn infectious that you won't believe it. It also sets the template for a buncha the group's other songs- "Medicine Man," "Ju Ju Hand," "Sorry 'Bout That," "Ring Dang Do," "Don't Try It," and others are all barely noticable alterations of the same template, and they also rock. The group's other hit was "Little Red Riding Hood," which is closer to "serious" rock n roll (but only in the same sense that a bicycle resembles a Ferarri more so than does a cow), but it's still a really, really cool song, with a great creeping guitar line and vocals that produce actual tension. It doesn't really set a template for the other songs to follow, but "The Hair On My Chinny Chin Chin" sounds like "Wooly Bully" meets "Little Red Riding Hood." And then there are gut-butsingly funny sing-alongs like "Oh That's Good, No That's Bad" and a wonky juke-joint isntrumental called "Pharaoh A Go Go," and a bunch of other mas-durr-pieces on that level. There's enough grease-coated rock n roll here to keep you busy until you turn uncool. Rock out!

3 out of 5 stars How you listen to this matters a great deal.......2006-07-01

Rhino as usual has compiled a generous dollop of the works of Domingo "Sam the Sham" Samudio and his band the Pharoahs and it's difficult to argue with very many of the cuts as being outright "bad". The problem (as with much of this vintage) is there's not enough distinction cut to cut.

Add just about anything here to a mix CD of oldies and someone will ask you "What's that song? I like it!"

But play this front to back and the same person will say "Didn't you just play that one?!?" (i.e. Most of these really DO sound like "Wooly Bully")

    HIGHLIGHTS:
The biggest singles are the best: party perrennial "Wooly Bully", a hipster 'goosing' of children's fables in "L'il Red Riding Hood", and ahead-of-my-time lament "(I'm in with) The Out Crowd". Outside of those, "Sorry 'bout that" berates an ex-lover hoping to reconnect, anti-fad "Monkey See,Monkey Do", and the age old question for pubescent boys everywhere: "How Do you Catch a Girl?" "Black Sheep" hides some clever social commentary within it and also is one of the few here that doesn't cop too much musically from "Wooly..". "Banned in Boston" reprises the outsider sentiment. ("I'm weird and bearded,baby/Wild and wooly/Can't you see?")

    LOWS:
"Pharoah-a-Go-Go" is a pretty undistinguished instrumental. "Oh That's Bad, No That's Good" is somewhat amusing but its hard luck tale doesn't wear well with repeat listenings once you know the punchline is coming.

    BOTTOM LINE:
Out of all the single disc comps available, this is the best bet despite some of the filler found here because the better tracks include stuff that's just not found elsewhere. (MILLENNIUM's not bad but you miss out on "Black Sheep","Banned",and "How Do you Catch..". If you know more than "Wooly Bully", this is the one to get.

Burn your own CD-R minus the mush and add the best of the Rhino Mitch Ryder comp (which suffers the same 50-50 fate), sprinkle a few other tunes in (perhaps "Double Shot of my Baby's Love" and "Quarter to Three"?) and you'll have a killer oldies party soundtrack.

    5 out of 5 stars It's the same song 2 dozen times!.......2006-01-21

But it's a damn great song! Yep, "Wooly Bully' and 23 variations of that theme.
The surprising thing is the social commentary of some of these songs: "Black Sheep", "Monkey See, Monkey Do", "Green'ich Grendel", "The Out Crowd". Unlike Bob Dylan's stuff, you can actually dance to these songs (always a plus).
This disc is a great example of garage rock, but... buyer beware! You really have to love this type of music to get through this disc. I've played it for people who have begged me to shut it off because... it IS the same song over and over. I can't stress that enough. If two dozen songs sound like too much I recommend MCA's 20th Century Collection... 12 songs and it goes down in 28 minutes. I bought that one first but 12 songs was not enough... so I picked up 'Phaorahization'. I'm very glad I did!

    4 out of 5 stars A Little Too Complete.......2004-10-03

This CD has everything your looking for in a Sam the Sham and the Pharaos CD. If you've only heard Wooly Bully you are missing out. The problem is there are so many songs that you can't just listen to the whole thing right through. Indiviually they may all be great but together they start sounding the same. I have this CD and am happy with it. But I'd recomend just getting the 20th Century - Millenium collection Sam the Sham and the Pharaos CD. I has all of the good songs.
