The songs that stand out on this collection are "Nursery Rhymes" and, of course "Do it any way you wanna." By the sound, I just knew that "Do it any way you wanna" was K.C. and the Sunshine band. But boy, was I wrong!! Four stars for this disc!!

Yes!... A Golden Philly Classic.............2006-01-19
A must for any old-school music collection! This cd encompasses the entire 1973 album on Philadelphia International Records, the X-Mas 45, and a few songs from their obscure, non-PIR, later 70s released lp, The Ebonys "Sing About Life", recorded in Somerville, NJ. The quality of the cd is very good, but does not reach the highest quality standard of the Sony Japanese import. This is a group that old-school soul aficionados may ask "What Happened"! Started in 1968, opposite Philly on the Jersey side, it appears the group was an early entry in the future stable of what was to become "The Sound Of Philadelphia", Philadelphia Intl. Records. Strange that their best known classic, the 1973 released "It's Forever", (on the album, same year released), was released 2 years after their first release and first hit, the sublime ballad (a number ten R&B single) "You're The Reason Why". Why such a gap, especially since the burgeoning label at the time in 1971 had yet to direct the Ojays to their break-through release "Back Stabbers" (1972), and had yet to welcome the Spinners into the fold (1972)? It's not as if the label at that time (1971), ala Motown during the 60s, was overflowing with talent? Some interesting questions, why not an album release shortly after the strong showing of their first hit, why only one album release while with the label? By the quality of recordings on the lp, it seems to the writer that more should have been forthcoming 1971-1973, only 7 or so songs? Last, would presume the group sang other songs that the label, at the time, decided not to include on the album, commonly referred to nowadays as the "lost sessions". Would be nice if released. As it stands now, "You're The Reason Why", "It's Forever", "I'll Try", "Life In the Country", catapults this Philly soul classic to 5 Stars".
every home should have one.......2004-07-19
Every home should have a copy of this album just for the track i`ll try,Great soul music. Play it at home with your partner and i will promise you a night to remember.
Very Soulful.......2000-11-28
if you are about Soulful Sounds&Great voice's then this is for you.it has so much feeling&thought.Groups like this could sing rings around alot of the Bums out now.you feel the sOul&harmony.a must for fans of Soulful singing.
The Ebonys - Remarkable.......2000-08-16
This is one of the most remarkable groups that I have ever heard or seen perform. The voices of the individuals are unique and cannot be mistaken for any other group. The music seems to be ageless and fits in well with today's standards.
Multi-Year Love Affair.......1998-07-29
My heart is near tears. I have loved this group since I was a teenager. We are talking about serious vocal harmonies. I crank up the radio the few times I get to hear their music. I could never understand why I never heard anything more from such an excellent group."Forever" and "Just Be Cause of You" are true soul classics.

Nice collection........2007-05-21
I'm not into the greatest hits thing but considering we can not find original albuns by the Hues Corporation this is a nice opportunity to have their music. The quality of the recording is good and the songs are nice. In the absence of their albuns it's recommended for lovers of the disco music.
Dissappointing.......2006-09-01
I bought this cd, because there is no other with all their hits. I especially bought for the 12" versions. But to my surprise only "love corporation" is about 10 seconds longer than the original on vinyl. The rest isn't.
Priceless.......2005-12-20
The group that named themselves after a famous billionaire, one Mr. Howard Hughes...and scrambled the name a bit. The nuggets on this album of course are their biggest hits including "Freedom For The Stallion" ( also covered by Three Dog Night) and "Rock the Boat". There are quite a few above average tunes in this collection such as "Love Corporation" and "Rockin' Soul". Worth a listen.
12 inch version does not mean long play.......2004-07-08
As for the fellow who said that he expected more for the so-called 12 inch version, apparently he is not very familiar with the album at all. What this simply means is that that song on this CD was taken from the original 12 inch album which I do have and is the same as this CD compilation
Fond Memories of the Corporation.......2004-05-08
Being a fan of the '70 soul and soft rock music, this is one group that is in the Top Ten, (Top Five in my book)that brings
back fond memories. Rock the Boat and Rockin Soul are popular
songs that everybody enjoys, but Love Corporation and Go to The
Poet, stand out in my book. This group really rocks when I play
their music and think back to my younger days.

Response to Ikarus' review below........2005-04-10
Look I only just ordered this album. Never heard any Sir Joe. (I couldn't post a review without a rating so the three stars is arbitrary) It hasn't even come in the mail yet... However this guy below, Ikarus, is dead wrong. These critical 'tiers' he's talking about seem determined more by the amount of major label exposure, production polish and advertising capital spent to push the artist than actual musical merit. Con Funk Shun?? Look I love Con Funk Shun, but hand me a stack of Con Funk Shun vinyls (seeing as they refuse to reissue all their albums on cd), 11 pre-90's not counting the unofficial band discredited first album, you could make scrape together 2 hours of great raw unadulterated funk. That's a very liberal maybe. Mandrill.. yeech. If you're a budding funk miner/ crate digger looking for great blistering funk my experience is that you leave no stone unturned. Sure check out the Ohio Players but be sure you buy the Westbound years as well as the Mercury. Pain is one of the greatest albums I've ever heard. And don't be surprised if the first tier Kool & the Gang have a hard time nailing down a solid funk jam as they careen toward the eighties or that most of their jams have the exact same guitar lick. I could go on like this. Black Nasty- Talking to the People, the Counts- What's Up Front That Counts, Baby Huey- Living Legend, Watts 103rd St Rhythm Band- pretty much everything, Chairmen of the Board- Skin I'm In ... and on and on, there are great albums that every funk head should taste that don't appear in Ikarus' 'first tier'. As you tap out those 'first tier' artists, and you will, you really might want to check out that dusty copy of Funk Pump. Mediocre as most of it is you never would have heard the awesome Flies over Watermelon. Oh yeah, I'm sure it was an oversight on Ikarus' part but no mention of James Brown??
Interesting, but hardly essential........2002-11-14
Sir Joe Quarterman and Free Soul make up one of many "second tier" funk groups that formed in the late 60s and early 70s. This CD comprises some of their best tracks and, if you are a hardcore funk fan, you may find it worthwhile. There is some nice horn and guitar work scattered throughout the disc. HOWEVER.....
While I realize that groups like Black Nasty, Joe Quarterman and Free Soul, The Counts, Ripple, Black Heat and the like all have their fans and cult followings......It doesn't take a long listen to see why these groups are not considered to be on the same level as Sly, The Ohio Players, The Bar-Kays, The Commodores, Brick, Cameo, Slave, Kool and the Gang, Con Funk Shun, P-Funk, Mandrill, War, The Meters, etc. They are interesting groups to be sure, but I would only recommend checking into them AFTER you've obtained more essential funk first.
For one thing, I find the music by these "second tier" funk outfits to be extremely repititious and unoriginal. After about 4 tracks, the music begins to sound alike and run together. One of the things that distinguished great groups like the Isleys or Earth, Wind & Fire was their diversity.......an innate ability to flawlessly shift from hard funk, to soul, to ballads, to jazz......seemingly effortlessly. You'll find no such variety or diversity here. Track 10 is pretty much on the same groove as track 1.
Secondly, many of these "underground" lesser-known funk groups were really intended to be back up bands first......and that is a big part of why there is a sameness to the music. It doesn't hold up well on it's own.
As long as you realize this going in, and you just want to add some depth to your r&b collection, then you might be interested in picking this up if you find it for a bargain price. There's no question that there were a number of talented funk groups in the early 70s and that inevitably some groups would be nudged aside; just remember, though......"second tier," rare groove-style groups are second tier for a reason. After 4 or 5 tracks you'll see why...
Wicked D.C. Funkmaster from the JB School of Funk : TIGHT !.......2001-01-21
This album is an unbelievable find. I came across it accidentally via the "ACTION" Volume of the FREE SOUL (no relation) rare soul music compilation while living in Japan. That volume happened to be one of my favorite and of all the tracks SO MUCH TROUBLE IN MY MIND definitely stood above a CD of solidly smoking syncopated funk soul grooves. - - Prior to hearing the tune on that album, I had heard Charles Kynard cover it on his (now out of print) YO MOMMA DON'T DANCE ALBUM, but was not familiar with Joe Quarterman & Free Soul. - - After I heard the tune, I was so impressed, I was ecstatic to find a CD with his tunes on the shelves at a record store in Shibuya... and what REALLY surprized me was that as funky as SO MUCH TROUBLE is, there are actually funkier tunes on the compilation... take THE TROUBLE WITH TROUBLE and THE WAY THEY DO MY LIFE for example.... yet if you've ever heard SO MUCH TROUBLE, it would be pretty hard to believe that you can get much funkier. In a nutshell Joe's music is the JB school of funk (tight and bumping) - - but on top of the groove message music - - lyrics as quotable as Gil Scott Heron.
To anyone who considers themself a fan of "rare groove", funk, '70s soul - - call it what you want... not having this compilation of Joe Quarterman's tunes is what I could only call sinful. - - Though his moment of fame (for a while he was touring the R & B circuit w/ groups like Aretha Franklin, TOP, AWB etc.) may not have lasted as long as it should, its clear, this is one artist who the record company's let get away. And the good news is, I met with Joe recently, and can only say, if there's a funk spot near you that's known to bring oldie but goodie funk bands into town, I'd definitely check to see if he's coming your way... this is one mutha' of an energetic performer ! ! !

More than just Rock the boat.......2005-02-28
They named themselves after the business empire of Howard Hues and they recorded some excellent easy listening disco music in the mid-seventies, but they are remembered as a one-hit wonder. Although it's not strictly true, nearly all acts eventually get reduced to one hit in the public mind. Bing Crosby had over 300 hits in America, but how many people could name more than one?
Rock the boat is one of my favorite disco songs from the seventies. Anybody who was around at the time, or younger people who have listened to a lot of seventies music, will be familiar with it, because it regularly appears on various artists compilations and it gets its share of radio airplay. If, for whatever reason, you are not already familiar with this song, I recommend you seek out a various artists compilation on which it is included before worrying about this.
Formed in 1969, the Hues Corporation got plenty of practice working the LA nightclub scene before they got their break in 1973 via an appearance in the movie Blacula. Freedom for the stallion, their first single, was a minor American hit. Rock the boat followed, going to number one in America and number six in Britain, as well as being a huge hit in many other countries. Only one more significant hit followed. Rockin' soul went top 20 in the USA and top 30 in the UK.
All three hits are included in this collection of a group who may not have been among the most important disco groups, but whose music is definitely worth a listen.
Some good tracks are missing.......2001-12-24
It's amazing how some artists seem to have more compilations on CD than original albums on vinyl. I'm a big fan of the Hues Corporation, but I really don't know what to make of this CD. The only reason for buying it is that it is the only one to include "Live a Lie" from the group's debut album. But then, it leaves out "Go To The Poet" and "Off My Cloud". The selection as a whole is good, but if you want just one, definitive compilation, choose "The Very Best of The Hues Corporation", instead. Even the Golden Classics collection, which has fewer tracks, can be a better choice.

GREAT COLLECTION BY THE INTRUDERS, BUT...........2006-12-18
THIS IS A GREAT COLLECTION BY ONE OF THE MOST UNDERRATED SOUL GROUPS OF ALL TIME . I LOVE THE INTRUDERS: THE LATE , GREAT SAM "LITTLE SONNY" BROWN , EUGENE "BIRD " DAUGHTRY (ALSO , SADLY, NO LONGER WITH US) SONGWRITER PHILLIP "PHIL" TERRY,AND ROBERT "BIG SONNY" EDWARDS.THEIR RECORDS WERE ALL FANTASTIC , AND THEY HAD A SOUND QUITE UNLIKE ANY OTHER GROUP, BUT.....LET'S BE HISTORICALLY ACCURATE HERE . THE SONG " I'M GIRL SCOUTIN" WAS N O T THE ONLY INTRUDERS SONG NOT TO FEATURE "LITTLE SONNY" BROWN ON LEAD. ROBERT FERGUSON , BETTER KNOWN AS "BOBBY STARR" DID REPLACE "LITTLE SONNY" AS LEAD SINGER OF THE GROUP FOR A TIME ,{AND LEADS A NEW GROUP OF INTRUDERS TODAY), BUT, IN ADDITION TO SINGING ON THEIR HIT " I'M GIRL SCOUTIN", HE ALSO LEAD ON THE HITS, "I BET HE DON'T LOVE YOU (LIKE I LOVE YOU)", "THIS IS MY LOVE SONG",AND "PRAY FOR ME". TO THIS DATE, NOT A SINGLE INTRUDERS "GREATEST HITS" COLLECTION (ON CD OR VINYL) HAS INCLUDED ANY OF THESE BOBBY STARR- LED SONGS... NOR HAVE THEY INCLUDED THE "LITTLE SONNY"-LED EARLIER HIT "DEVIL WITH AN ANGELS SMILE" FROM THEIR NOW CLASSIC COLLECTORS ITEM 1ST ALBUM " THE INTRUDERS ARE TOGETHER " {WHICH ALSO, BY THE WAY,STILL HAS YET TO SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY ON CD.}UNTIL THESE SONGS ARE INCLUDED , THERE WILL NEVER BE A DEFINITIVE INTRUDERS "GREATEST HITS" COLLECTION...SO HOW ABOUT ABOUT IT, GAMBLE AND HUFF ?
PHILLY'S BEST !.......2006-07-30
No one could ever dispute that The Intruders were the best group to come out of Philadelphia (the city of brotherly love). Groups may come and go, and their songs may come and go, but The Intruders always remain strong. I'm sure the team of Gamble and Huff would agree. If one would need convincing, just take a listen to : "Cowboys To Girls", "Together", "Love Is Like A Baseball Game", "(We'll Be)United", "Slow Drag", "Friends No More". "When We Get Married", "Gonna Be Strong", "I'll Always Love My Mama", "Rainy Days And Mondays", "I Wanna Know Your Name", "To Be Happy Is The Real Thing". Their songs are forever playing on my stereo. But Philadelphia did pump out some other good groups like The Futures, The Ebony's, The O'Jays,& Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, to mention a few !!
Amazon is RACIST!.......2006-03-25
Love is like a WHAT YOU SAY??? Three strikes you're out! Track 5 is "misspelled".
Most thorough set available.......2003-04-10
While not among the best remembered soul groups to emerge from Philadelphia in the '60s and '70s, the Intruders were instrumental in helping define what would become known as Philly Soul. This vocal quartet was the first signing to Gamble & Huff's Excel label (changed soon after to Gamble Records) in 1965. With these records, Gamble & Huff began to develop the production style which would reach its peak in the '70s with the O'Jays, Billy Paul, and Harold Melvin & the Bluenotes.
The Intruders' trademark was the endearingly off-key lead vocals of Sam "Little Sonny" Brown. Brown's shaky voice was a good match for such novelty numbers as "(Love Is Like A) Baseball Game," "Me Tarzan You Jane" and the R & B number one "Cowboys To Girls." He also projected a warm innocence on romantic ballads, including "We'll Be United," "Together" and "When We Get Married."
This 30-track, two disc set contains the majority of their R & B hits (including all of the above). Unfortunately omitted were the uptempo charmers "(Win Place or Show) She's A Winner," and "Give Her A Transplant" as well as "I'm Girl Scoutin'," the only Intruders' single not to include Brown (his defection from the group lasted less than six months).
On the plus side, Philly Golden Classics includes the 1973 album Save The Children in its entirety. One of the best Philly Soul albums ever, this concept recording offers uniquely effective covers of Marvin Gaye's title track and Paul Simon's "Mother And Child Reunion," as well as stunning originals like "I Wanna Know Your Name" and their artistic apex, "I'll Always Love My Mama."
After the release of Save The Children, the Intruders had only two more chart entries: "A Nice Girl Like You" and a strong version of the Carpenters' "Rainy Days And Mondays." This would have been a good place to end the collection. Instead, we get another half-dozen nonhits from the mid to late '70s. These tracks have little of the charm of the earlier hits and sound more like castoffs from the O'Jays (they probably were). But since the only other collections available on the Intruders were a couple of ten-track duds which both omit "I'll Always Love My Mama" this set was a big improvement. Now, how about a multi-disc set on the O'Jays?!
Good old fashioned real music.......2000-11-10
My favorite song is, "I will always love my mama". Everytime I hear that song, it really makes me smile. The words are true, this will be played at my son's wedding for the song that my son and I dance to.
