She's no stranger to the towering highs and lows of the heart, and Etta James's soaring, gospel-tinged pipes match up well with the rigors of unabashed bliss. Happily, the good people at Chess Records recognize this, and they have thoughtfully collected some of the best examples into one tidy record. Kicking off with her classic treatment of "At Last," the collection moves through the lilting strings of "My Dearest Darling" on into the expressive tones of "I Want to Be Loved (But Only by You)" with grace and emotional candor. James can be simultaneously tender and deeply honest and her ability to express the desperate joy that is the soul of love remains one of life's marvelous pleasures. --Matthew Cooke

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars THE LADY CAN SING.......2007-07-15

When Etta James starts to sing the world stands still and your heart skips a beat. What a voice this lady had. I am very thankful to have this music as it can transform an ordinary day into a fantastic mood of love and happiness. When she sings At Last or Sunday King of Love my heart smiles and her smooth blues make me sings too. She makes music way more than just sound. Thanks

5 out of 5 stars New Edge to "Old" Love Songs.......2007-07-07

For years I have said that even though Etta James did not have many "Top Ten" hits on the charts, she is the best interpreter of other singers' songs, the best who ever lived and sang on a New Orleans or a Chicago stage or bar stool. She takes every song she sings and makes it all new and all Etta. She is the single most important reason I became a fan of the blues _ _ _ years ago. You get the picture? I am an old lady and am an old fan.

She's been through many years of problems and heartache, but then, here she still is, with a voice that is even better (if that's possible!) than when she was a sweet young thing performing with Louie Armstrong, Ray Charles, BB King and all the great band leaders and blues singers. She even has a new thin physique!

A couple of the tunes are ones she had in her regular repertoire forty-five years ago and others are contemporary hits from other artists. Each one is "pure Etta." I seem to play this one over and over and over. I can't get enough. I even have it on my computer so I can listen to it when I am doing other work!

This CD is a great example of what the blue are and the influence it can have on all kinds of music. Some of the tunes one will hardly recognize at first. And--the best part of this recording is that you don't have to be in love to enjoy it! (though it wouldn't be bad that way, too)

4 out of 5 stars Etta.......2007-05-30

Great songs and some very sensual! Perfect for a romantic dinner at home with candles.....

4 out of 5 stars Gets better each time.......2007-04-02

This is one of those CD's that just keeps getting better with familiarity. Etta really puts her heart and soul into each song. I bought it for "At Last" but now love all the songs on it. It sounds like my old 45's, but in a good way.

Album Description

Dick Bartley, the best-loved oldies DJ in America, presents 18 tracks from the Golden Age of Top 40, a wide open era when bubblegum pop like Boyce & Hart's "I Wonder What She's Doing Tonight" could play alongside crazed psychedelic rock like Arthur Brown's "Fire." In these days of narrow-casting and micro-formatting, Dick Bartley helps us remember what made 60's radio so great.

But the fun doesn't stop there! Dick throws in Janis Ian's controversial protest classic, "Society's Child," the Silkie's Top 10 Beatles cover, "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away," Sir Douglas' stoner travelogue, "Mendocino," and Desmond Dekker's 1969 freak reggae smash, "Israelites." Classic Oldies 1965-1969 collects the wildest, best music possible, mirroring the great Top 40 stations of the late 60's.

Classic Oldies 1965-1969 has been digitally mastered in true stereo wherever possible. Many songs, such as the I'des Of March's "You Wouldn't Listen" (released years before their best-known hit, "Vehicle") are sought-after rarities, and one track, "Peter Rabbit" by Dee Jay & The Runaways, makes it's CD debut. Two other tracks, Procol Harum's "Whiter Shade Of Pale" and the Troggs' "Love Is all Around" although widely released, have never been available in STEREO in the original versions - until now!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great collection of classic oldies.......2007-07-30

I first began to listen to Dick Bartley's syndicated radio show, "Solid Gold Saturday Night" over 20 years ago while in college. I had always been impressed by his presentation and knowledge of musical trivia. Now he has compiled these classics into a CD. While I think the music speaks for itself: The included CD liner also has nice tid bits of information. For those of us who enjoy the Golden Age of Top 40 music, this is a great collection, with some rather difficult to find tracks. I bought it specifically for the tracks from New Colony Six, which are hard to find.

3 out of 5 stars Dick Bartley plays Casey Kasum.......2007-04-14

Here are some of the long forgotten songs of the late 60's pop scene, revisited upon us.

Don't get me wrong, most of these songs I liked back then and still like now. Especially the long forgotten beautiful love ballads by The New Colony Six. (who were they?) But you will remember the songs if you preview listen to them. The incentive for me to purchase this collection was to aquire the song "Peter Rabbit" by DJ and the Runaways. (who were they?) Such "novelty songs" were rife in the 60's pop culture. Flashes in the pan and then forgotten. But they were OUR music back then intertwined by the thousand Coke, Pepsi and Marlboro commercials blaring at us through all those transistors!

Surfing through this collection brought back to me so many songs in my past. Surprises abounded as I reminisced. The only song in this collection I didn't like was "The Clapping Song." Please, let dead things lie in peace, before I throw cockroaches in their coffins!

5 out of 5 stars UNFORGETTABLE PAST.......2007-01-18

How could anyone not listen to and enjoy this wonderful music from the past? Even today, you find all kinds of youngsters listening to 'My' generation music. It's a time when the lyrics actually had meaning. Not just a bunch of yelling/screaming as today's junk. My recommendation is to encourage all to get hooked on yesteryear's music. WOW!!!

5 out of 5 stars A must have........2007-01-08

Building a library of oldies to listen to just wouldn't be complete without this album.

5 out of 5 stars great cd / great sound.......2006-02-26

This is a great cd with some great songs. Nice to hear Whiter shade of pale and Love is all around in true stereo. I love the Righteous Brothers Soul & Inspiration a great song and even though the song is only extended a few seconds at the beggining, its just a great song. There are a few throw away songs like Peter Rabbit, but is overpowered by many other great songs. I love Bend Me Shape Me, Society Child, I wonder what she's doing tonight, great to hear Sir Douglas Quintet's Mendocino. A lot of songs not that commonly found on other "various artist" cd's are here. I was excited before I bought the CD that the Shirley Ellis song "The Clapping Song" was included. I remember that I loved that song when I was 12 or 13 and haven't heard it since. But hearing it now 30 some years later, what the heck was I thinking, what a stupid song. But it did bring back memories...

3 out of 5 stars Nice singers, good for nostalgic Soul fans!.......2007-03-06

This CD is a good addition to your 70s Soul collection if you also like The O'Jays, Spinners, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Isley Brothers and/or The Main Ingredient, Four Tops, The Dramatics and any other of those wonderful Soul bands that ruled the "classic" Philly and Motown sound.

4 out of 5 stars A must for any CD collection.......2007-03-04

I was only 7 years old in 1972 when CB&SR were in their short lived hey-day. But even at 7 years old the sounds of R&B and Edward's voice was the icing on the cake for my love for great soul music along with Stevie Wonder, The O-jays and many more. Having this CD in my collection now not only brings back great memories but makes me appreciate the soulful sound and great lyrics written by the Cornelious Brothers. I only wish they were still going. I recamend getting this collection it is truly a great album and edwards voice is one of a kind even for a 7 year old kid in 1972.

4 out of 5 stars Where's their first Album?.......2005-02-17

I bought the Cornelius Bros.& Sister Rose first album on vinyl back in 1972. It was one of the few albums produced that didn't have a bad cut on it. The majority of the songs on this CD were on that album, but it just makes me miss the first album all the more. Why hasn't Rhino or someone else picked up on this group and re-released the first album on CD?

I just ran across Maysa here on Amazon and listened to the samples. The CD is very very nice, she has a beautiful voice and I love the music. Mellow and quiet.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet Classic Soul.......2007-04-27

This is one of 2 in my life I've ever gladly downloaded. Maysa did justice to the remakes and she is a truly underestimated goddess in music. Keep doin' your thang, Maysa.

5 out of 5 stars Maysa's Sweet Soul Classic.......2007-02-26

Balto., MD native and former Stevie Wonder back up singer Maysa Leak does it again. First of all, this is a cover album. Perhaps this sets the stage for uneasiness, but after listening, there is no room for disappointment. Maysa is an authentic artist. Her sweet soulful silky sound is clearly her own. And for sure, it is her sweet silky sound that elevates these 10 soul classics to another level. The level of smooth and jazzy. Of course I am a believer in originality, and truly there is nothing like the real classic itself. However, Maysa's interpretation of these songs is not to be ignored. Give a listen to "Come Go With Me" and "Love Won't Let Me Wait". These are smokin' treatments!! This cd reflects some of what she listened to while growing up in the 70s. Apparently she listened well. She does a very good job here. I appreciate the musical change. Soft/mellow/jazzy.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-02-24

I love Maysa, but I was disappointed to hear her cover so many other people's songs. One of the many attributes I love about her is her originality and I missed that on this album.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet Music.......2007-02-13

Maysa does great with this album and you must buy it. Her voice will get into your head and put you into a sweet mood.

One of the BEST old school, blue lights in the basement cuts-Dreaming's Out Of Season" the one you sang lead with the Montclairs. I'd love to hear you re-record it AND "Make up for lost time".These two rank right next to the others on this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Love Songs Sung by Phil.......2007-06-27

What can I say, Phil you've done it again. Once more you showed the world why you are one of the primier male R&B singers. A lot of people try to cover the classics but only a few can do it with such style and grace, and you are one of those few. Each song was sung with such care and feeling. Man you've done the originals (songs)proud and I believe the writers of these songs and are pleased that you have reminded us of what a love song is suppose to sound like. Phil, you da man!!

YES they were a great band and YES we want to hear their songs remastered to the finest quality but WHY OH WHY would you remaster short versions?? I have to wonder what record company phillistine would remaster disco classics like Boogie Oogie Oogie and Rescue Me as single edits only and not the original extended versions. Collectors of disco music want complete versions. Next time get it right please or dont bother.

OMG, I loved A Taste of Honey when I was in high school (during the late '70s). Recently, I've been nostalgic for those kinder days and I've been purchasing quite a few classic CDs...I found this and purchased it immediately! I'd forgotten how truly beautiful Janice Marie Johnson's vocals are on songs such as "I'll Try Something New," (cover of a Smokey Robinson tune), "Sukiyaki," and "Rescue Me".

Whatever happened to these ladies? I think they still have a lot of good tunes in them...

This CD compiles several Coleman Hawkins sessions recorded between 1939 and 1956, capturing the masterful tenor saxophonist at the height of the swing era, in the midst of the bop revolution, and at the helm of large orchestras. While the quality of his accompaniments varies tremendously, Hawkins's contributions don't. The earliest session climaxes with his classic solo version of "Body and Soul," a landmark in both the harmonic language of jazz and improvised musical architecture. Another four tracks come from a 1940 octet date with some of Hawkins's old associates from the Fletcher Henderson band, Benny Carter (on trumpet here) and J.C. Higginbotham on trombone, along with the underrated clarinetist Danny Polo. It's small-group swing of the first order, with touches of traditional jazz in the improvised ensembles.

Tadd Dameron wrote the arrangements for a 1947 band that includes trumpeter Fats Navarro, trombonist J.J. Johnson, pianist Hank Jones, and drummer Max Roach. While the horns all solo fluently on Dameron's "Half Step Down, Please," it's the three ballad features for the leader that stand out, Hawkins drawing inspiration from Dameron's moodily dense harmonies. The settings are pedestrian at best for a series of 1956 recordings, with Billy Byers and Manny Albam writing arrangements. Hawkins bristles with individuality, whether soaring over a substantial big band on "The Bean Stalks Again," cutting a new path through a cluttered "Body and Soul," or counterposing his ruggedly magisterial horn to still fussier arrangements of "I Love Paris" and "Under Paris Skies." --Stuart Broomer

5 out of 5 stars Fabulously full sound.......2006-10-08

If you have not heard Coleman Hawkins, he has an amazingly full and rounded saxophone sound that some would kill for. I come from the Deep South (London England) and I love this music.

5 out of 5 stars Stark Raving Mad - The Life and Music Of The Hawk.......2005-04-23

Coleman Hawkins is not just one of jazz's best musicians but one of america's. Indeed he has many claims to fame - Practically bringing the Tenor to the public, and possibly inspiring the be-bop with his (at the time) extemely free and at times lengthy solo's. It would take a very long time to list the musicians who were under his influence (Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordon, Ben Webster, Charlie Rouse to name a few). The sets compiled on this cd, sound terrific. I have never heard music from 1939-1949 sound so great. Even though this disc ranges from 1939-1956 it flows extremly well together. Hawk dosen't change his style as much as the muscians around him do. Early on this set has a very 1/2, Train/March sound to the rhythm. Then be-bop hits, and Fats Navarro and Max Roach are with him, even Hawk adjusts for these sessions to a certian extent. The last sessions are are Hawk with Strings, are excellent. There is always a debate as to who is the classic king of the tenor? Coleman Hawkins or Lester Young, it is impossible to say, they both deserve the title. Also check out the extremly fun "Duke Ellington Meets Coleman Hawkins" for more hawk.

5 out of 5 stars Not enough Hawk.......2004-05-29

Referring to the 19 track RCA incarnation of this title:

This is 5 star material, as is most Coleman Hawkins. He is presented with half a dozen all-star orchestra and small groups recorded between 1939 and 1956. A swell way for the unintiated to get aquainted with the Mother of all (tenor) sax players. To hear the Hawk is to hear them all: you'll find shades of every tenor from Adderly to Rollins. The selections are carefully chosen for artistic merit and variety. The sound quality is quite good, even on the older sides.

The problem is, as an overview it is too narrow. Spend the extra money to get the 2CD "Retrospective 1929-1963" which contains 40 tracks, including all those on this CD. The Hawk is too huge a jazz legend to be captured on a dozen CDs, but at least the expanded release covers a sizeable chunk of his career. If you cheap it out and buy this one, you'll love it but in retrospect you'll wish you'd gotten the 2CD version.

Postscript 12/01/06: Although the 1929-1963 Retrospective is no longer available at Amazon, check out the $9 Quadromania 4CD set. Not quite as good audio quality, but a lot of bang for the buck. A lot of the Quadromania Fletcher Henderson trax feature Hawk, and he is prominent in Disk 4 of the Quadromania Pee Wee Russell collection.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone loves this cd.......2004-01-08

I have this cd in permanent rotation and no matter what is going on in the house at the time it comes up,everyone stops to pay attention' Who's this " is invariably asked by those who don't yet know coleman. If you know his work it gives a big smile.

5 out of 5 stars Title doesn't lie -- it's Jazz with soul (and body).......1998-07-29

A favorite and classic Jazz CD -- all six songs are excellent, the sound quality is great as well, and, something like "Kind of Blue" by Miles Davis, it's considered by some a "must have" Jazz performance.

Not my favorite piece, but Etta always pleases.

5 out of 5 stars Lord Have Mercy.......2006-03-16

Tell me mamma... I love this CD. I think it should come with a warning label. "Caution: You will wake up the neighbors". Buy it. I can't play it quiet... I can't not sing along with it... I can't stop dancing when it is on.

    5 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 stars. A wonderful, varied soul record.......2005-06-11

More soul than blues, Etta James' "Tell Mama" originally came out in 1968 as a twelve-track LP. And here it is in its remastered 2001 incarnation, bolstered by no fewer than ten bonus tracks which earns the reissue the subtitle "The Complete Muscle Shoals Sessions".
The sound is terrific, clear and realistic, as is the production by Rick Hall. And those who feel that Etta James' Chess recordings featured too many violins and not enough power need to pick up "Tell Mama" right away!

The original album was top-notch in its own right, featuring the all-time classic soul ballad "I'd Rather Go Blind", excellent covers of Ed Townsend's "I'm Gonna Take What He's Got", Otis Redding's "Security" and Jimmy Hughes' "Don't Lose Your Good Thing", and a couple of driving up-tempo numbers, most notably Don Covay's "Watch Dog" and the magnificent title track.
Etta James never sounded better than during these four 1967-1968 sessions, and the various musicians never set a foot (or a finger) wrong.

There really isn't a single weak track among the twelve songs originally issued. Even practically unknown songs like the swaggering soul stomper "My Mother In Law" and the slow "It Hurts Me So Much", which have never been covered by anyone and don't appear on any of Etta James' compilation albums, are highly enjoyable, and Etta's rendition of "Just A Little Bit" (AKA "I Just Want A Little Bit") is a supremely funky slice of soul-blues.

And the bonus tracks aren't rejects by any means. They include "Almost Persuaded", "Misty", the rocking "You Took It", a very good interpretation of Sonny Bono's "I Got You Babe", and two soulful takes on "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man", a song which has been interpreted by everybody from Aretha Franklin to the Flying Burrito Brothers.
I'm no big Etta James fan, actually, but this album is something special. I completely fell for it the first time I put it on, and to me "Tell Mama" is the best record Etta James has ever made, one of the finest, most cohesive soul and R&B records of the late 60s.
You really ought to give it a listen.

    4 out of 5 stars What a re-issue should be!.......2005-02-23

In addition to the 12 re-mastered original tracks, there are 10 more (including 2 versions of "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man"). There are some good songs here that are not included on either "Her Best" or "The Chess Box", including "Watch Dog", "My Mother In Law", "It Hurts Me So Much", "I've Gone Too Far", and her funked-out Soulful rendition of "I Got You Babe". This is a must-have for Etta fans.

5 out of 5 stars Blistering, bluesy R&B.......2003-01-15

The ever-vivacious Etta James is one of R&B's true greats, an artist whose work will always stand the test of time and this album, originally released in 1968, is one of her best-known and most powerful. More dynamic than expressive, James was a gal who clearly knew how to rock, capable of the same sort of expansiveness as Jimmy Rushing or even jump blues shouters such as Wynonie Harris, but also with a touch of the sleekness seen in Dinah Washington and Ella Fitzgerald. The "Tell Mama" album is a flawless, timeless crowd pleaser, packed with upbeat, compact material, a tailormade showcase for James' mousy snarl. Backed by the best of the Muscle Shoals crew, this is music that can't easily be faulted; with ten bonus tracks added on for good measure, this CD edition is pretty hard to resist.
