With a career spanning more than two decades, Suzanne Vega has long stressed quality over quantity. It's no surprise, therefore, that her first release in six years is more than worth the wait. Her eye for detail, laconic vocal cool, and thematic focus on New York City continue to distinguish her artistry, but the sonic sheen applied by British producer/multi-instrumentalist Jimmy Hogarth sparks a musical renewal. Crisp guitar riffing recalls the streetwise work of fellow New York chronicler Lou Reed, while chamber strings, electronic atmospherics, and multitracked background vocals lift the results well beyond the folk realm. Vega writes from a perspective of memory and maturity, recalling the New York of old on "Zephyr & I" and "Ludlow Street," showing the musical sophistication of bittersweet seduction on "New York Is a Woman," applying a musical Brazilian wax to "Pornographer's Dream," and contemplating her life as a wife on "Bound" and as a mother on the lullaby "As You Are Now." The results are richly satisfying throughout. --Don McLeese

On Beauty & Crime, Suzanne Vega's Blue Note Records debut, the Manhattan native uses New York City as the backdrop for a collection of eleven new songs that juxtapose acoustic guitar-driven melodies with coolly synthesized beats; intensely personal lyrics with compelling, short story-like narratives; images of today's scarred cityscape with memories of Vega's old Upper West Side 'hood and Lower East Side haunts. The past commingles with the present, the public with the private, familiar sounds with the utterly new, just like the city itself. Making her first new studio album in six years, Vega says, "I feel like I really stretched my limits. I pushed myself out of my comfort zone--to sing in keys I wouldn't have sung in before, to work with different textures, to be unafraid of doing what ever sounded good to me. I wanted to make a modern classic."

5 out of 5 stars One of Vega's finest albums with a diverse sound with elements of jazz, folk, etc. mixed in the music.......2007-08-03

Suzanne Vega may be an acquired taste but after you've taken a drink of her latest album, you'll find it both intoxicating and difficult to give up. Admittedly there are those who dislike her hushed vocal delivery (which sounds at times like a female Lou Reed with echoes of Bob Dylan/Leonard Cohen where she isn't trying to "sing" the material so much as "discuss" her observations). I love Vega's delivery so sue me. She's a literate songwriter whose lyrics provide a nice constrast to the music which veers from folk, jazz, elements of techno sometimes within the same song.

"Beauty and Crime" is one of her best albums musically. This concept album about her adopted home New York is a loving and sometimes blunt assessment of the city that surrounds her and has been her muse off and on over the past twenty years. Vega has often taken stylistic detours sometimes off the beaten path like her flirtation with the techno elements that decorated "99.9f" and the smooth samba beat that showed up on "Nine Objects of Desire". Unlike those two albums the production of Jimmy Hogarth is less distracting and self-conscious than those two albums allowing the quality of the songs to shine through. For those that are interested the Japanese release has one extra song that comes in at just under two minutes. It's a good song but you won't miss it (unlike "Golden" from "Songs of Red and Gray) if you purchase the U.S. release of the album.

"Zephyr & I" and "Ludlow Street" have some of the most inviting melodies/arrangements since Vega's breakthrough album. "New York is a Woman" uses a pretty plain metaphor to describe a visitors first visit to the Big Apple. Vega's presentation is pretty straight forward folk outside of the occasional use of horns to decorate the song. "Poronographer's Dream" has an inviting beat and arrangement that echoes nightclub jazz. "Frank & Ava" and the lilting "Bound" are two other highlights. "Unbound" features the type of arrangements that were characteristic of "99.9F" but they are less obtrusive here,

As much as I have enjoyed all of her albums, "Beauty and Crime" is probably one of her most consistent, inviting and musically rich since her first two albums. "Days of Open Hand" was good but didn't extend much beyond "Solitude Standing". "99.9F" played with her sound providing her songs a great diving board to leap off into varied and different musical terrain. That continued on the stylistically diverse and often beautiful "Nine Objects of Desire" and "Songs in Red and Gray". "Beauty & Crime" brings all of this together but, more importantly, does so with the strongest batch of material she has written to date.

For those fans that are interested Vega's website also has a live album recorded for the "Songs in Red and Gray" tour available. It's also available for download from Itunes.

5 out of 5 stars The best so far?.......2007-07-22

Trying to objectively assess any record a matter of weeks after its release is difficult, particularly when it's from such a complex artist as Suzanne Vega - as her previous albums show, her inherently "catchy" songs need time register for their underlying strength and hidden depths to be revealed... but, with time, it's quite possible that this could well prove to be the best release from this supremely gifted artist. In the meantime, sit back and enjoy another 5 star outing.

5 out of 5 stars She's Like A Fine Wine, She Gets Better With Age.......2007-07-20

When I picked up Suzanne Vega's seventh studio release "Beauty & Crime", I did what a lot of people do these days - I ripped MP3 files for my computer. When I saw that the total time of the songs was only 34 minutes, I was a little disappointed because I have waited 6 years for her follow-up to the terrific "Songs in Red and Gray". But then I played the songs. Wow! The lady still has the magic. Although the songs are pretty short (only one exceeds 4 minutes and I actually think that song - "Bound" - drags on a little too long), they pack a punch. Personal favorites are "Edith Wharton's Figurines", "Unbound" and the one everyone seems to like, "New York is a Woman", which is about a suburban man's first trip to New York City. As a suburban man who will soon take his first trip to New York, I feel like Suzanne just gave me a tour!

I thought the CD was great and I hope she sees enough success with it that we'll hear from her again, hopefully sooner than 6 years from now. I'm looking forward to seeing her for the first time live later this year.

2 out of 5 stars Arrest this Woman! - More Pointless Music from Vega.......2007-07-20

You know, I love acoustic female singer-songwriters as much as the next person (which isn't saying a whole lot), but I also know trash when I listen to it. This, unfortunately, falls into the latter category. I had highly anticipated this release, alongwith the new Sinead O'Connor record, but Sinead eventually let me down with her tepid double album of a release. Vega somehow manages to outdo her with this certifiable doozy of an album, which is a pity, since her last studio album was rather pretty.

"Beauty & Crime" (Suzanne evidently has very little of the former, and she has committed the latter here), is Suzanne's "Ode to New York" (did we really need another one?). I think Tori Amos did it best when she limited her political consciousness to one song about New York on her "I Can't See New York" from the "Scarlet's Walk" album. Well, this album is no "Scarlet's Walk". In fact, its not even "99.9F", which is amongst the weakest of the Vega albums. On its own, its an oddity with no definable purpose - which is OK if the music was great. But when the recently mangled Bjork record has more replay value than this monstrosity, I don't know what to say.

Lets consider the track "Ludlow Street". Even if you're a Vega fan put aside your love for this woman for an instant. On this track, her songwriting abilities are on par with lets say, Lindsay Lohan or Jojo. I kid you not. Here is a sample:

L"ove is the only thing that matters.
Love is the only thing that's real.
I know we hear this every day.
It's still the hardest thing to feel."

And thats just the FIRST VERSE!

Things only get worse on "Pornographers' Dream", which as a tune is acceptable enough (but then again, so were "The Garbage Pail Kids"). Here, Suzanne is apparently talking about a mans' pornographic muse or something - it isn't especially clear (or interesting):

"Bettie Page is still the rage
with her legs and leather;
she turns to tease the camera, and please us at home,
and we let her."

The problem then, if we turn from the lyrics, is the abject disrespect that Vega has for the listening audience. Granted, her tinny voice isn't exactly a selling point, but she is known for making harmlessly average folk-pop songs. What she's done here however, is bewildering. Even if you're a past fan, or a lover of music by Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, Aimee Mann etc, theres nothing here of any worth, really.

Whats even worse is the cover photo that does nothing to elevate this beyond a vanity project of the most ill conception. I hate getting personal about artists, but in this case, one has to wonder how the record company could greenlight something so abjectly pedestrian. Its Vega after all, so its not like we expected anything groundbreaking (how could we?), but still - this is beyond whatever low expectations you had coming in.

"Frank and Ava" is a song that is again a mis-step. I have to wonder, is THIS the New York that Vega is observing? Its not terribly inviting. At best, this is like someone took the concept of sitting in a cozy Starbucks drinking a cup of coffee, and reverse engineered it on the premise of "how bad could we do this". I kid you not.

People, there have been only three great albums this year. "American Doll Posse" by Tori Amos, "Release the Stars" by Rufus Wainwright, and "Paige Aufhammer" by Paige Aufhammer. This record is nowhere near the top (read the critical reviews), and I would advise Vega from avoiding the recording room like the plague, in the future. This woman is not a musician, has no right recording music, and her place can be taken by someone more deserving. Sorry, but thats the truth.

Worst female album of the Year. Avoid.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING!!!.......2007-08-06

Mandisa (of American Idol Fame) is phenomenal in her debut album True Beauty. Disa's range in styles gives something for everyone (although I'm positive everyone will like the entire album no matter what style you normally prefer). Her songs range from pop, (True Beauty, Only the World), to hip-hop (Love Somebody w/Tobymac), to gospel (Oh, My Lord), to breath-taking ballads (God Speaking, Voice of a Savior, He Will Come). I am repeatedly blown away by her amazing voice. I pre-ordered the CD so it was waiting in the mail for me last Tuesday (release day July 31) and have listened to it at least 10 times a day since then. I find myself singing along with a huge smile on my face. If you are an Idol fan, a Jesus fan, or just looking for something new, BUY THIS CD! I promise you will not be disappointed! True Beauty

Check out Mandisa's book Idol Eyes while you are here! It is equally great!

this cd is soo inspiring! when you listen to it, it makes you feel good. all the songs speak not to your ears, but to what matters, your heart, and mandisa does a great job of presenting them in a way that is awesome! this cd is worth every penny that is spent on it!

Her smile is so sexy..... I hurried and bought the cd once I was able to find a copy all the stores in the area were sold out... After popping it in my cd player her voice feeling the airwaves I was thinking to myself I thought the production could have been more up to date. But when I got to the 3rd track GOD SPEAKING... This song was worth the price of the whole album... Mandisa blows this ballad away... her voice soars over sounding like Celine Dion waiting for radio airplay. I had to pull over to the side of the road and listen.... I was totally blown away... She is on Sparrow records which is known for older Gospel artist.... Hopefully they will promote her record because its awesome..... Clive Davis is probably wondering .... why didn't he sign Mandisa? Because when you hear her voice there will be nothing left to say but .... wow this girl can sing!

Who says discipline is a bad thing? No one who's heard American Beauty, the Dead's greatest studio achievement. Showcasing 10 concise, country-rooted gems that sound equally good whether you're hanging on the front porch in the afternoon or nursing a bottle after hours, this one could win over many an anti-Jerry. Bewildered by loss both personal and social--the hippie dream was quickly crashing by Beauty's 1970 release date--the band put its querulousness ("Box of Rain") and wry humor ("Truckin'") into the service of a masterwork. The most impressive cut of all may be "Ripple," Garcia's spiritual credo. --Rickey Wright

Album Description

Expanded & remastered (HDCD) version of the band's 1970 classic featuring many of the Dead's best-known songs plus 6 bonus tracks 'Truckin' (single version) & 5 live tracks 'Friend of the Devil', 'Candyman', 'Till The Morning Comes', 'Attics of My Life' & 'Truckin'. Digipak. Warner/Rhino. 2003.

5 out of 5 stars a marvel of songcraft for fans of any type of music.......2007-07-29

A classic. I only wish there were more albums in the world like this (Workingman's Dead is close). Great melodies, unforced harmonies, cool subject matter. I've given this album to so many people who thought they hated the Dead and they all loved this album.

4 out of 5 stars "What a Long, Strange Trip It's Been".......2007-06-18

This isn't in the same league as the previous Workingman's Dead. But like that album, American Beauty is a must, even if you're not a Deadhead, and I'm not one. The bad news is that they stretch a couple of these songs to the breaking point (Attics of My Life; Candyman), something they wisely avoided on Workingman's, and while I can't say I hate Till the Morning Comes, it doesn't really impact me all that much.
Now for the rest of the album, which is excellent. The back-porch folk Friend of the Devil is my favorite Dead song ever. The philisophical Ripple, pleasant opener Box of Rain, fine country-rocker Operator, groupie ode Sugar Magnolia, the oddly eerie Brokedown Palace, and the self-mythologizing rocker Truckin' (you know, the one with the famous double entendre "What a long, strange trip it's been!") make up the rest of my favorites. You'll note that's the rest of the album, which basically means "this is a very good album!" Because it is. Far better than the "classic" Live/Dead. This and its predecessor are two essential albums.

5 out of 5 stars True beauty...........2007-04-20

Many love to talk about the Grateful Dead and their marathon concerts. Having seen them 12 times (including the last 2 shows Jerry Garcia did), I can attest to their great live prowess. But they were just as good in the studio, and this album proves that beyond any doubt. This is my favorite Dead album, a country pop masterpiece. The songs here have surprising depth and substance. Robert Hunter's lyrics are the best he ever wrote, and the tunes are absolutely beautiful. This album sounds more countryish than anything (especially on the ballads), perhaps because the Dead were listening heavily to Merle Haggard and country radio at this time. This has that "Bakersfield" sound (as an amazon friend told me), and that's why it resonates so deeply with me, because I love that sound. This album has more depth than current country music. It's a lovely album, arguably the Grateful Dead's best....

5 out of 5 stars a rock masterpiece........2007-03-22

this is the grateful dead's masterpiece. can't be touched. robert hunter's finest batch of lyrics; songs populated by outsiders and misfits doing their thing. divine melodies and harmonies, loads of toe-tapping feel good music. a couple of breathlessly beautiful slow numbers to boot. "truckin'" is as catchy a number as you'll find anywhere, with its propulsive bass rhythms carrying along robert hunter's great lyrics about a drug bust. the song also sports stinging electric guitar licks by garcia, and a chorus that enters your head and stays there long passed what a reasonable leaving time should be. this is great american music. a masterpiece. a classic. not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars CLASSIC.......2007-03-21

This is by far the best of the dead, no doubt about it. Even if you are not a deadhead or you dont like them that much, get it anyway because some of the best music of the century is on here.

It is an excellent collection of classical music. I would recommend this CD if you have a friend who don't like classical music, since it has the most beautiful overtures and portions of famous artists. If you are a Classic Music Savvy you probably will not be impressed by it, unless you want to play the CD as background music in a friends gathering.

Way back in 1991, many of us saw the single-handed salvation and revival of the old-fashioned American-style Broadway musical comedy. True, it was in the form of a feature-length Disney cartoon, but Beauty and the Beast had it all: a wonderful, tuneful score (including a huge hit title-song), off-the-wall choreography, a great opposites-attract love story with an ultimately happy ending, comic subplots, colorful period costumes, a romantic location in small-town France, and an irresistible cast, including Angela Lansbury as the voice of a teapot. Alan Menken's songs, with lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, literally introduced the characters ("Belle" and "Gaston") and carried them gracefully through the old fairy tale with its new animated twists. Disney understandably decided to transpose this cinematic miracle to the Broadway stage in 1992. Beauty and the Beast at the fabled Palace Theatre has done as much as anything to revive New York's theatre district; it led to a similar animated film-to-stage transfer of The Lion King, which allowed for the magnificent restoration of the 1902 New Amsterdam Theatre, which was the cornerstone of the cleanup of 42nd Street, which in turn transformed Times Square and "Broadway" into the world's number-one tourist destination. And we're all terribly grateful. But, on stage, Beauty and the Beast was flat, and most of that lack of fizz is, alas, captured on compact disc. The good songs are all here, such as "Be Our Guest," but the performances of them are mostly perfunctory--the exception being the vocal renderings of Susan Egan as Belle, the Beauty. Further, the Disneyfication of the Broadway musical seems to extend to faceless and interchangeable (read: cheap to hire) players, a practice that extends to The Lion King. The only "names" in the original Beauty and the Beast cast were Beth Howland as the teapot and Tom Bosley, a mere shadow of his former Fiorello, as Belle's father. Even worse, unlike The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast was not reinvented for the stage. It's my theory that the kids who made up the live audience (and many of their parents) were filling in the blanks from repeated viewings of the cartoon on video. If you're willing to do the same when only listening, this CD might do. But why, when the movie soundtrack album is available? --Robert Windeler

5 out of 5 stars Disney's Beauty and the Beast.......2007-08-04

I could listen to this cd for hours and hours. It is absolutely fabulous. It makes me feel like I'm back in front of a stage watching the play all over again.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-07-16

I bought this for my wife and daughter before they went to see the play on broadway. They really enjoyed listening to the music before seeing the play. Great for all ages.

5 out of 5 stars Music from my all-time favorite Disney movie, plus some!.......2007-06-28

This show was the first broadway show I ever saw. Of course it was a good choice for me, because the source material is my favorite Disney movie, and one of my top ten favorite movies, period.

All the original music from the movie is here, and (somewhat surprisingly) all the songs they added for broadway fit in seamlessly and really add to character development. The new songs are:

"Me" - this is one of my favorite additions, it's a semi-proposal from Gaston to Belle and the lyrics are very funny. Makes me laugh every time I hear it.

"Home" - A song Belle sings when she first comes to the Beast's castle, it shows her determination in the face of despair. Beautiful vocals by Susan Egan, who makes a great Belle. She also plays Megara in "Hercules"

"If I Can't Love Her" - A song for the Beast that helps to make him a sympathetic character earlier in the show. It is a good song and fulfills its purpose, but I am not a big fan of the actor who plays the Beast

"Mason de Lunes" - Another song for Gaston as he lays down his plan to lock Belle's father in the insane asylum. Not as funny as "Me" but still great.

Out of all the new and old songs, however, my favorite music on the cd is the instrumental "Transformation" I could listen to that every day.

4 out of 5 stars Original Bway Cast Recording is not what the show ended up being.......2007-06-22

If you are looking for an accurate recording of the Broadway show (that is available for rental through MTI), you should get the London or Australian Cast Recording of the show. The OBCR was recorded BEFORE the Broadway run even started rehearsals, so it does not reflect many, many lyric changes, music changes, and dance arrangements that happened between the show's Houston tryout and Broadway opening. Granted, there are waonderful performances on this CD, but if you want to know what the show ended up being for nealry all of its thirteen-plus-year run, get London.

3 out of 5 stars i am pretty upset!.......2007-06-09

ok, so i love beauty and the beast and broadway, but this cd makes me mad. it doesn't have the song "A Change in Me" that is from the broadway musical. and for the song "Home," it doesn't have the lyrics from the show, it has the alternate lyrics that are meant to be used when you sing the song anywhere but the show. the lyrics that are written in the book that came with the cd are the musical lyrics, but she doens't sing them. it is an ok cd, but if you can find a better one, please get that one and don't make the same mistake i did!

5 out of 5 stars Review of Beauty and the Beast TV Soundtrack: Of Love & Hope.......2007-07-23

If you are a fan of the late 80's television show Beauty and the Beast, starring Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman, then this CD is for you. It has music and poetry from the show, with the poerty being read by "Vincent" with his wonderful voice. Some of the poetry is from William Shakespeare, William Wordsworth, George Gordon, Lord Byron, Robert Frost to name a few. It has Catherine & Vincent's love song with lyrics, which I just heard for the first time when I got this CD and it brought tears to my eyes. I absolutely love this CD and think you will too! Beauty & the Beast

I remember this show from the eighties, and have waited for it to show up on DVD. Strictly chick stuff...but oh, how I love it. Thank you!

5 out of 5 stars Luscious.......2007-06-08

For devotees of Beauty And The Beast, and sheer romantics, this is just nirvana. Music that tears at the heart-strings, and beautiful poetry in the dulcet tones of Ron Perlman. Buy it!!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Touching music, poetry.......2007-04-19

When I first discovered this CD was for sale, I cried. When I first listened to it-not having any idea what they'd put on here from the show, the most beautiful music started up and then "Vincent" started reading the poetry that he read to Catherine and that made me fall in love with his character -eventually, well, the tears just quietly flowed from my eyes, surprised me! I wasnt aware of crying till the tears flowed from the pure beauty of the sounds from this CD. All these years later, I still treasure and love this CD above all my others, it gives you a sense of peace too and the poems bring understanding of true love. I highly recommend it!! (dont let the flowery sentimental review deter you-I really believe most who love beautiful music will love this).

Cynical types will accuse Disney of milking the "greatest" concept until it's drier than Tinkerbell's fairy dust ("Supercalafragilisticexpealidocious," "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Da," and "Heigh Ho" were hits off of Vol. 1; "Bare Necessities," "It's a Small World," and "Some Day My Prince Will Come" stole the show on Vol. 2), but a glimpse of this installment's track listing is all it'll take to squash their suspicions. Once again running reverse-chronologically, Vol. 3 opens with Jonatha Brooke's gorgeously achy ballad "I'll Try," from 2002's arguably not-so-great Return to Neverland, and gradually reaches back through the years to re-raise the curtain on Toy Story 2 ("When She Loved Me," performed by Sarah McLachlan), The Lion King ("Can You Feel the Love Tonight"), Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews's classic "A Spoonful of Sugar"), Pinocchio ("Give a Little Whistle"), and a bundle of treasured others, bottoming out at 1933's "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf" from The Three Little Pigs. Vol. 3 is not without its weak moments--would a G-rated movie-goers' poll produce Beauty and the Beast's "Gaston" or The Hunchback of Notre Dame's "Topsy Turvy" on a hits list? Seems unlikely. Still, the bulk of these tracks are, as the included Little Mermaid song goes, "Part of Your World," and the spread of decades they represent proves their staying power. Don't expect Disney to latch the lid on its inexhaustible archives until a dozen or so of these records, each as strong as the next, beckon you back for more. --Tammy La Gorce

Nothing brings sweet recollection of Disney movies like hearing the wonderful songs. In an age where there so much music with no redeeming qualities, these Disney CDs are priceless. Wonderful for the entire family to listen to around the house or in the car while traveling. We can't help but sing along. We love that these are the original tracks from the movies! Wonderful! We now have all three volumes.

5 out of 5 stars Disney songs are the best.......2006-03-18

I love the songs on this volume. I'll Try by Jonatha Brooke is such an amzing somg. I especially bought this CD fort that song but, was pleasantly surprsed by the rest of the playlist.

4 out of 5 stars Great Disney Music.......2006-02-21

I have bought the first 2 volumes of Disney's Greatest Hits and the 3rd volume doesn't disapoint. My 2 young children love to listen to this CD and talk about the movies that they come from. A definate must have!

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as Vol 1 and Vol 2.......2005-09-11

This Disney CD represents the "leftovers" that didn't make it on Vol 1 and Vol 2 of this series. Although it has some of my favorites, I don't listen to the entire CD often. Disney could have done a better job of editing the which sound files should make the cut on this one. Still, it's nice to have all 3 CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Not A Music Critic ... But A Lover Of All Music ..........2006-08-29

Let's not be too harsh regarding this CD. I purchased this as my first baby step into the classical genre and it absolutely made me fall in love with classical music and appreciate it in a way I never could when people tried to make me like it. It is such a wide variety of classical music and I find romance to be joyful, tragic, gentle, harsh & a complete roller coaster that I found all in this ONE CD! It also made my boyfriend who hates, or shall I say HATED classical music NOW like it! That was an amazing feat! We now have many classical cd's and we always go back to this one for dinner parties, romantic baths and other things... I played this CD so much, that it got damaged and I just purchased another one to replace the one I bought years ago. If you are a critic, stay away from this cd, you will rob it of its beauty & innocence. If you are a beginner and want to open your mind to all that classical music has to offer, then this is the best money you can spend. BUY & ENJOY!!!

3 out of 5 stars Misleading title scheme.......2006-01-01

This is what bothered me about the CD. Three of the biggest eras in classical music were: the baroque era, the classical era, and the romantic era. Now, with CD's titled baroque favorites, classical favorites and romantic classics, one would expect these CD's to be era specific. Such is not the case. If you read the back of the CD it even says "from the romantic era of music", but the there are composers like Vivaldi (baroque) and Debussy (impressionism) on this CD. About more than half are from the wrong eras. So this music is romantic in the non-musical sense of the word, which is fine, but a little bit misleading.

2 out of 5 stars Don't Bother...Really!.......2005-02-21

Not what I call classical composers! THis cd is annoying in a way I really can't stand. It lacks the pure elegance of the classical days. Don't buy this cd unless you want a phony all around bad album played by cheap ameteurs.

3 out of 5 stars Could have been better.......2004-02-19

I think the quality is good, and better on a few tracks, but all these romantic tracks?? Not what I listened to. Actually I was kind of disappointed; I had purchased an abundance of the "Favorites" collection some were better than others.
I was kind of perturbed when some same tracks on this CD were on another CD, and visa versa.

Still, I suppose for the price, one can't go wrong.

3 out of 5 stars Some great tracks, but flawed nonetheless.......2004-01-12

Whether or not this CD lives up to its promise of "Romantic" music is not truly a concern, being that the entire nature of classical music is that it is open to one's own interpretation. However, I can speak to the quality of the recordings themselves.

A few of the tracks (Reverie, Canon, Sarabande, a few others) are absolutely superb. Well recorded, and played with genius bravado, coupled with great arrangements (it was interesting to hear Reverie outside of its native instrument, the Piano). Most of the tracks, however, are absolutely horrid. Fur Elise for the sheer amateurish quality, Vivaldi's Concerto for oboe and strings sounds like it was copied from an old phonograph record, as does Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty Suite, Mendelssohn's Spring Song, and Puccini's Gianni Schicci, and a few others. A few other tracks still are played horribly, most of them already mentioned.

All in all, for the price you are getting quite a few good tracks, but don't expect stellar quality. I would instead recommend Chopin's Nocturnes and Mozart's and Tchaikovsky's Piano concertos of you're looking for something romantic.

2 out of 5 stars hmmmm.......2005-09-14

definitely not the best rendition of the popular suite.on the other hand, try finding another one.
stuff is edited,bludgeoned,rather.
tempos verge on comical.
rather disapointing,I really needed a nice version of the sugar plum faerie dance.
will probably stick to Wendy Carlos's,cheesy, runningly cheesy, blue cheese smelly, even,as it might be,still holds the original pace and campy pomp.

...not nuch of a cheese shop is it?
-it's fairly clean.
certainly not contaminated by Cleese!

2 out of 5 stars Good Introduction but poor quality.......2005-09-12

This is a good introduction to Tchaikovsky for the beginner that gives a broad sampling of his work. Considering the price, it's a good value if someone is just wanting to begin exploring classical music or Tchaikovsky in particular.
However, the sound quality on this albumn is quite poor and there are much higher quality Tchaikovsky recordings available.

5 out of 5 stars Tchaikovsky's Greatest Pieces of Music.......2000-09-04

Here are some of Peter Ilych Tchaikovsky's greatest works. His Nutcraker, Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty ballets are the most famous in the repoirtaire. The Symphony No. 5 and 6 are very excellent symphonic orchestrations. However, despite all the good stuff in here from the Russian master, the performers and conductors cannot surpass the beauty and artistry that such Tchaikovsky music masters as Dorati, Markevitch and Ormandy are. So if you want quality Tchaikovsky, get those conductor renditions. However, for a Tchaikovsky beginner, these pieces will get you hooked. This is a good cd to begin with for a Tchaikovsky listener. I am a Tchaikovsky listener ever since a friend recommended his glorious works to me. I am a Mozart fan but Tchaikovsky is undoubtedly the greatest Romantic composer of all time. He combines Russian melodies (Russian dances, mazurkas, waltzes) and gives them a definite Western romantic feel. He was friends with such noted Romantic composers as Camille Saint Saens, known to create such marvelous music of the era- Carnival of the Animals (now popular through Dysney) and Danse Macabre, to name only a small portion. Tchaikovsky also adored Mozart and although he is not exactly a Classical composer, he greatly admires the beauty of Mozart's works. Three cheers for Tchaikovsky !

1 out of 5 stars great music poorely performed........1999-09-18

T. is my favourite composer but the interpretation on this CD is rather like a good effort in high shool

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......1999-04-18

I think that Peter Tchaikovsky is one of the greatest composers ever. His Nutcracker suite and Capriccio Italien are wonderful pieces of music, as well as the rest of his pieces! This CD is definetly worth owning if you like classical music.

We knew Thomas Newman was versatile (he's created gripping soundtracks for everything from The Shawshank Redemption to Desperately Seeking Susan), but his score for American Beauty is simply gorgeous and one of his best. Filled with inventive instrumentation--tablas, bird calls, dulcimer, banjo, ukulele, detuned mandolin, and more--the score varies between highly rhythmic, world-music influenced passages ("Dead Already," "Lunch with the King") and the more subdued ("Mr. Smarty-Man," "American Beauty"). Throughout, Newman's score is inventive and a great complement to the dark comedy's numerous mood swings. The movie's other soundtrack--a collection of memorable alt-rock tracks--gave us just a sampling of this score. Here's the rest. It's short (37 minutes) but sweet. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars It was just what my husband wanted.......2007-06-02

I purchased ths item for my husband because he loves the score of this movie. The CD arrived in adequate packaging, and the product was un-damaged and played perfectly. The haunting sounds of this CD are ideal for sleeping with. Sounds crazy and some of the tracks are sporadic and not good for restful sleep, but with modern technology you can pick the tracks you want to listen to over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Film scores rarely stand on their own; Thomas Newman has written one that can........2007-04-14

I enjoyed reading D. Mok's review, but I am compelled to disagree about the invisibility of the score due to intricacy with the action, mood, and so on of the film. The first time I watched American Beauty I noticed the score. It's so gentle, patient, and gorgeous - I don't know how anyone can miss it.

When I go to watch this movie again - and I have more than once - I am always waiting for the music to move me into the world of the characters. I cannot imagine the film beginning with a better tune than "Dead Already." I cannot imagine the plastic bag dancing without its music. I cannot imagine Lester ogling Angela without his music (and her dancing). And that is one of the secrets of great art - if one's work is so complete that the audience is incapable of imagining a better brush stroke or better placement of music, the artist is viewed as great and an authority.

To pretend that I don't notice the greatness of Thomas Newman's score every time I watch the movie is not only dishonest, but an insult to Newman. I don't think D. Mok intended dishonesty or insult. I believe that the score stands on its own, although in a different way than it stands with the movie. With the movie, it flows easily and naturally. Without the movie, pieces of the film and strong emotions filter into your mind; it's a different experience, indeed, and it's one I recommend to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars ?.......2006-12-31

I can't find a song, which is playing when the two cheerleader-girls are danceing infront of they parents and Lester got crush on Angela at the first time?

5 out of 5 stars Newman's acclaimed score is worth all the praise it recieved.......2005-11-24

American Beauty - a great movie with an equally great score. Directed by Sam Mendes, who went on to equally great heights with "Road to Perdition", it is mainly a comedy-drama, though begins to focus more on drama later on. Newman's score perfectly suits the surroundings. It was largely an experimental score, compared to the style of his previous works before this film. However, he delivered quite well and the soundtrack added immensely to the film. This is probably what influenced Sam Mendes to use music so respectfully in "Road to Perdition" - who knows what he would have done had he hired another composer for American Beauty, and recieved a score of lesser brilliance.

American Beauty is characterized by three main motifs. First is the excited vibes and marimbas, second is the gentle piano wanderings, and third is the bearing string pads. The vibe sound is used often throughout the score. It is used to full effect to open the score, then continues to create a dreamlike trance in "Arose" and an upbeat atmosphere in "Lunch with the King". "Bloodless Freak" is repetitive - and that is most likely intentional, to represent the repitition of the character's actions on screen. The first piano theme is introduced in "Mental Boy", admist weird noises which leave abruptly to let it sink in.

If there is one thing that is remarkable about this score, it's that Newman uses themes to denote atmosphere and idea, rather than something blunt, like to denote a character. For instance, the theme in "Mental Boy" is first used to describe the character Ricky filming the family from their window. Later, it is used when Lester is nearing his fantasy about his daughter's best friend. The connection between the two isn't obvious, but it is present, as something, to put it bluntly "weird". Slightly surreal, "wrong" in many ways, dark. In a more positive tone, the theme from "American Beauty", rather than representing a scene or character, it represents beauty itself, and is played at two moments where we catch glimpses of beauty as explained through the characters.

The downside to this score is that some may find it gets repetitive on a constant listen. Many of the motifs are repeated almost exactly as they were previously, and not developed much as one would expect in other scores. For instance, the theme from "American Beauty" repeats in "Any Other Name" in an almost identical way, although with slightly varying string patterns and an extra piano motif near the end. Similarly, "Dead Already" and "Still Dead" do not differ greatly in their presentation.

Thomas Newman has established himself as a diverse and original composer with a unique tone in his music. What astounds me is that he is great with minimalistic instrumentation and odd sounds, but can also strike a chord easily when it comes to emotional, heartfelt music. If you liked American Beauty, I reccomend you check out "Road to Perdition" for more Tom Newman magic.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2005-10-19

The American Beauty Score is larger than life. Thomas Newman's masterpiece simply kills me with the heart earning everlasting impact of the sound on this score. The Plastic Bag Theme is something that makes my brain wave a million invisible white flags to it's tremendous simple melody. As corny as I might sound, I celebrate most of life's ironic moments by playing this very melody either on my PC or on my mind. American Beauty is my favourite film of all time and it wouldnt have been possible if this magical score was to be left out. The coordination with the story line and the melody is super and quite award winning. This was probably the first score I truly noticed besides Road To Perdition (Another outstanding composition) If you like this try out "The Village" by James Newton Howard. However if you want something better, keep looking. The music contained is creative and refreshes one's own existance like a blood purification process. I think I have said enough so let's just play "dead already" and enjoy our charades. [ Pardon my overdramatic self]
