Slowburning Beauty - A Return to Form.......2001-10-19

Years ago, after hearing - I mean really hearing - 'Laid', it became one of those timeless fantastic albums that you couldn't get tired of. The multi-layered slow builders - one instument carefully threaded on top of another - sometimes subtle, sometimes overt - but each adding to the final adrenalin rushing creshendo. Then suddenly it stops - all to start again in the next song. Just brilliant!

Then a couple of dodgy albums - 'Millionaires' being particularly weak. Ephemeral pulp - perhaps a wink at the mainstream in mind, but very misguided. Deep waters just aren't any good at pulp. Witness Bono or Ed Kowalcsyk's miserable forays into MTV-ville.

So now - 'Pleased to Meet You' landed on my table without much excitement. Halfway through 'Space' I was interested again - a couple of songs later I remembered why I was such a huge James fan. The Jameses have remembered what is uniquely theirs - the simple lyrical, incremental, subtle pop song. Its incredible how good the three chord wonder can sound in their hands.

Outstanding tracks are:

Space - long ethereal build up to a classic James song. Goes forward adding slowly to the wall of sound until the abrupt end five minutes later. An object lesson in not rushing the climax. This is what James are all about.

English Beefcake - Driven by a simple but beautiful bass line. Haunting guitar and keyboard melody. Great lyrics. A somewhat strange outro leaves you uncertain if you've moved onto the next song or not. Pity about the WhoaHo stuff at the end.... .

Junkie - Up front miked accoustic guitar (think Everlast - Whitey Sings the Blues). Unhurried shuffling drums. Sounds like Tim's singing with a peg on his nose but he's got issues worth crooning about.

Pleased to Meet You - Probably the darkest track on the album and the most memorable for it. Starting with a simple repetitive guitar refrain with a spacey keyboard background. Enter the brushed snare - eerie chorus line - pregnant scary bass bridge - wham! hit the distort button. Needs to be played loud and often.

Alaskan Pipeline - Beautiful filmic endpiece. 'You mother me, I son you'. Say no more.

Live at the Latin Casino.......2007-07-26

Surely one of James Brown's most mysterious opuses: apparently never even reissued on *vinyl*, despite an impressive chart placement. Of course, the somewhat misleading packaging ("somewhat", meaning check out this review box title for the actual venue, another great landmark, though quite different in scale!), and subway station post-production effects, presumeably to make it sound like a huge auditorium event, added to the confusion. [The slow-running master tape didn't help either].
Then again, it's James Brown, who always found a special way of making order out of "chaos" - who else can keep a one-chord riff going for days, with mostly non-verbal emanations ("Hip Bag '67", track four)?
Yes, all of James Brown's live album have good audience sonic inreraction, and here the crowd is up in the mix, which adds to the excitement, although, in a sense, it also is a reminder that a big aspect of the live experience is in the visuals, and typically, though we can hear the crowd, there are no stills from the actual event. One can imagine the beatific glow on the on the receiving end of the funk (though that came a few months later).
I say, without hesitation that this is Brown's most exciting live album (the Live in Dallas set has that heart-pounding and foot-stompin' "pop", but is *paced*). Following the greatest vocal introduction in recorded history, we're right into nearly-manic renditions of "Out Of Sight" and "Bring It Up", and the audience is already close to being emotionally spent. Cut five has a tremendous "Prisoner Of Love", his best on record. The take recorded at the Apollo about five months later does not have the Soul or warmth this one has - he sounded a bit tired and distracted on that much better-known performance on "....Apollo, Vol. Two".
Another tune fares better here than on the forementioned double-album: "It Maybe The Last Time". [For initiates, it is reminiscent of an earlier tune by the Staple Singers, "This Could Be The Last Time", and a later tune by the Rolling Stones]. This one has the power and compression, quite possibly noticed by Bad Company ("Can't Get Enough Of Your Love").
The gospel styled R & B-jazz hit "Ain't That A Groove" has the band at optimum capacity. (Another strong presumption: Paul McCartney referenced this particular track *and* "Please, Please, Please", prefacing the finale, "Bring It Up" [reprise]).
I hope that a domestic version can be issued with extras, and presenting the original, uncut session. (Gotta say that the editing here is a bit rough in spots). Oh yeah, and give us some photographs - in this DVD age, it's cool to add that dimension.
[Please note that the CD has a silent interval between "Side One" and "Side Two" tracks].

I know we're not supposed to do this ...but...this cd is $2.97 here at Amazon, $19 at Starbucks...first, the $5.00 cup of coffee (and we smile and say 'thank you')...now this!!?? By the way the cd is interesting and surprisingly good...I bought mine from Amazon...

Exquisite and unmatched!.......2005-06-21

Mahler's 'Song of the Earth' was composed during the years of 1907- 08 after the death of his eldest daughter, Maria Anna. Mahler was soon diagnosed with a heart condition himself and the song symphony became the product, according to his wife, of all his fear and sorrow. The music is intensely cloured, deeply personal and, at times, exqisitely subdued.

Ths songs focus on a deep love of nature, the futility and beauty of life and, invariably, our mortality. The six songs of the work are shared between a tenor and a mezzo, and range in mood and energy from the intoxcation of a drunkard, the pleasures of youth, to the unparalleled and perhaps most perfectly scored single piece of music ever written, Der Abscheid, 'the farewell' - the requiem-esque finale to the song cycle.

While James King is strong and distict in his part, the recording belongs well and truly to Janet Baker. In this 'role' she is simply unmatched. Her phrasing and diction and the intesity of her emotional performance in the telling finale is truly remarkable. The pathos is incredibly intense, surpassing both the remarkable Kathleen Ferrier and Christa Ludwig who headline other significant recordings of the work.

I have often, listeding to this recording, considered my life complete. I am astounded at her artistry and listen ever increasing awe at what she has managed to accomplish.The 31 minutes of the finale is something to be heard again, and again, and again.

Even as I try to review this, I must admit, words begin to fail me. It is simply breathtaking. Breathtaking. Everywhere and eternally..

Beautiful wind ensemble music.......2003-06-29

This treasure of a CD features some beautiful wind ensemble music, which really should receive more attention in the mainstream. Not your typical Sousa CD, this features the wind ensemble at its best, with both sections of the full, gorgeous ensemble sound and solo sections featuring the individual tone colors that contribute to the unique ensemble sound. The emotional capacity of this type of ensemble is huge, and this CD demonstrates that well. I would certainly recommend this CD to any lovers of band music and classical music, particularly those who enjoy the Romantic and 20th century composers who tend to use the winds to a fuller extent.

Great introduction to Etta's music.......2005-05-12

Etta was one of the finest R+B singers of the sixties and early seventies, with an incredible voice and an amazing ability to interpret a song. This compilation contains a selection of the music that she recorded forr the Chess label during that period. There are so many great songs here but I'll tell you about some of my favorites.

Almost persuaded, originally a number one country hit for David Houston, is given a bluesy R+B treatment here. Maybe Etta was inspired to try this by Ray Charles' re-interpretation of country songs, but whatever the reason she did it, the result is impressive. Loving arms, recorded by many singers but generally associated with Elvis Presley, is another inspired cover, as is At last, originally recorded by Glenn Miller.

Etta was first to record I'd rather go blind. In Britain, this became a top twenty UK hit via a cover by the British blues group Chicken Shack. Christine McVie (later of Fleetwood Mac fame) was the lead singer on that single but much as I love Christine's voice, the original version by Etta is superior. Etta's only UK hit of her own came following its use in a TV commercial in 1996 - it made the UK top five and is, of course, the raunchy opening track here, I just wanna make love to you.

Etta had plenty of R+B hits in America, though she only made a limited impact on the main pop charts. Among Etta's R+B hits to be found here are Pushover, Tell Mama and Stop the wedding, all of them excellent.

As an introduction to Etta's music, this is brilliant, especially considering that it is a budget release.

Etta James is a Voice that leaves you in a Trance. her quality of tone&Control is truly incredible&Yet you feel so many emotions coming through."at Last" alone is the kind of song that you can relate to at any moment. Her Voice,Range&Pop Sauveness is the Link from Tina Turner-Beyonce.Etta James is still One of the All-time Best.
