If Rieu is not the most outstanding purveyor of Viennese waltzes and similar light-hearted fare, he is certainly the most popular and well-known. There are plenty of fun pieces on this album, although, to be just a tad pedantic, more of it is Italian and French than remotely Viennese. But it's all fun, and it's all well-played. --Sarah Bryan Miller

3 out of 5 stars Music different from title.......2007-05-26

The title of this CD was misleading. I wanted an entire CD of Viennese waltzes to play at a party, and was disappointed that there were marches, etc. on the CD. A better title would've been "The Vienna I Love, Music From My Heart".

5 out of 5 stars André Rieu - The Vienna I love - Waltzes From My Heart.......2006-07-17

The music is so upbeat and you are automatically in a good mood. It is a real pleasure listening to this CD and it is done frequently.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent choice.......2006-05-03

I am really a rock music fan but I enjoy this version of light classical music. It may not be for the serious classical music enthusiast, but it is still considered excellent light entertainment. What a way to introduce classical music to a wider audience!

2 out of 5 stars Pop Strauss, et al.......2004-04-30

I was looking for truly Viennese renditions of Strauss waltzes. Though unrelentingly upbeat, this isn't it. There are medleys of Strauss, Offenbach, Rossini, and everyone else imaginable. It's a pop version of what was once pop on its own. I know Strauss isn't serious classical fare, but this trivializes it.

3 out of 5 stars Depressed? Listen to this!.......2002-09-25

Having one of those ho-hum days just like that little round guy on the Zoloft commercial? Place this on your CD, press start, and don't fight it! You will be dancing around the living room (provided you don't fight it, just let it go!). Musically, it is a very fine piece from a very fine artist. It can totally transport you. So many of the tunes you will know from TV commercials, (Rheingold Beer) etc. It is a solid beautiful collection of tunes that can stir the soul. I know it sounds schmaltzy, but if it can make you feel better, why not try it?

I was very disappointed in CD. Way to hillbilly for me.

5 out of 5 stars Sing-A-Long.......2004-12-10

I got this collection for my husband several years ago as a cassette and he listened to it so much he finally broke the tape! I was thrilled to find it on CD to replace it, and got one for my Dad too who loves to sing along with gospel music like the Gaithers, et al. It has all the well-known favorites. If you like "O Brother, Where Art Thou," you'll love this collection. Even our 17 year old son (who prefers rock music) likes to sing along with these songs. Can someone say, "Amen!"

5 out of 5 stars A great compliation of country gospel........2000-09-06

This CD has all the country gospel songs I remember from the small church I grew up in. I listen to a few of these songs and I'm in an upbeat mood the rest of the day. It was difficult for me to find the CD that had a broad selection of classic gospel sung in a classic country style, but I finally found it in this CD.

Described rather astutely as "The Laurel and Hardy of Danish electro pop," Junior Senior's "D-D-Don't Stop the Beat" is the coolest thing to come out of Denmark since Lego. Already huge in Scandinavia, the JS sound (think the Cramps, the B-52's, and Wham! in some gloriously incongruous pile-up) can't fail to paint a smile on the hardest of cynic's face. Fittingly their debut is full of perversely mad pop songs, referenced to the hilt and none too complex in production; for sheer goofy charm and jump-around madness, it's hard to beat. "Chicks and Dicks," an ode to misguided sexual attention, rocks along to 60s beach guitar and surfin' harmonies, while "Move Your Feet" is the sound of Fatboy Slim body-popping to "Club Tropicana." At turns clever, irreverent, and maddeningly catchy, this is a record from Denmark that other countries will want to listen to. --Paul Tierney

3 out of 5 stars better than you would think.......2006-08-21

this is a weird cd b/c it is so hard to categorize. It is danceable, dorky, gay overtoned, cheesy, bubble gummish yet, it actually rocks! There's even cool, fuzzed out guitar all over it.

It cannt be for the dance crowd b/c of the cool guitar and references to 70's punk acts.

could it appeal to rockers? It is very danceable, makes you want to jump around your car while listening to it.

Is it for the gay crowd only? I don't think so b/c there is a call for girls.

Is it top 40 trash? No, it is too damn inventive!

"Coconuts" and "move your feet" are actually cool rock songs!

I think, what the other reviewer said, is true. This is danceable Cramps/Ramones/B-52/60's garage band music.

In conclusion, since it is difficult to be categorized, that means they are more original, less derivative and therefore this is a thumbs up cd.

It has great cross over appeal since it does rock, groove, twange and is very catchy. This is the ultimate guilty pleasure cd!

3 out of 5 stars catchy, but borderline obnoxious.......2006-01-25

I've heard Junior Senior put on quite a show live, and it's easy to imagine while listening to this frenetic set, but just like conversations can come across as banal or simplistic when transcribed, "D-D-Don't Don't" definitely stutters, occasionally snagged in its own groove, with some "umm" and "y'know" peppering the mix as well. Still, while JS has some maturing to do before it reaches the level of a powerhouse like Basement Jaxx, there are standouts at least worth a download while you wait. With "Move Your Feet," Junior Senior crafted the most contagious, overlooked dance gem of 2003. Reminiscent of the Jackson 5, Ohio Players and Sacramento's !!!, the song blazes in a roller disco sort of way. "Chicks and Dicks" channels a '50s girls band sound with a '60s guys garage band intensity. And "Shake Your Coconuts" has the oddly tasty distinction of sounding like Buzzcocks' Pete Shelley fronting KC & the Sunshine Band. Sadly, much of the rest of the album, I've determined after repeated listens, is either filler or musical experiments better to have been aborted. "D-D-Don't" comes across in the same vein as Bis' frenetic beast "New Transistor Heroes," like a kid on two gallons of soda in a fingerpainting competition. It's fun stuff but it's got no soul.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty decent dance music - definitely a guilty pleasure - 3.5 stars.......2005-12-30

Let it first be known that this album is VERY silly and cheesy. Don't listen to this expecting the next "Abbey Road." However, for the style of music that Junior Senior creates, it is pretty entertaining although kind of forgettable longterm (though there's an odd charm with some of the songs that make you like them, a sort of guilty pleasure). Unfortunately, the second track on the album, "Rhythm Bandits", has an EXTREMELY better single version than what's on the album which completely baffles me (it's one of my favorites by Junior Senior). Junior Senior is entirely about fun, and if you listen to it without that in mind then you'll be sorely disapointed. If you don't like pure fun and silly albums then you'll be disappointed. Not essential at all, but buy it if you are looking for a silly and dancy album or if you have nothing better to get.

Highlights include:
"Go Junior Go Senior"
"Move Your Feet"
"Shake Your Coconuts"
"Boy Meets Girl"
"Shake Me Baby"
"C'mon" (barely)
"Good Girl Bad Boy" (barely)
"Dynamite" (barely)

1 out of 5 stars AWFUL!!!!!!.......2005-09-25

Don't even buy this album if you wanna save money. This is the worst album of all time and you will be disappointed if you hear this album. Believe me. No other album can compete against this album. Not any other album on this Earth, not albums in 50's,60's or 70's. No decade. The only good song is "Don't Stop the Beat". The song "Who Are You Gonna Do Tonight" is just plan nasty. It sounds stupid at that. Mark my words do not get this album!!!!

1 out of 5 stars Yuck.......2005-08-15

Don't buy it, you'll regret it. I did. The title track is catchy for awhile. It eventually gets old. Besides, how cool can it be if VH1 used it in all their ads?
If you are looking for fun, unusual music to bring to a party, just to watch all the rap boys and girls freak out, purchase an album by The Soft Pink Truth. Their latest release "Do you want New Wave or do you want the Soft Pink Truth puts this watered down drizzle to shame.

The instantly catchy album promises to be just the ticket for those way too hot and frenzied summertime parties.

The soundtrack to Felicity's fictional final college year, Senior Year is tinged with many of the same emotions found in real senior years--sadness, love, and a desire to hold on to the present for just a little while more. A talented and diverse crop of singer-songwriters communicates these nuanced feelings through inoffensive, stripped-down rock tracks. Alt-country's Ryan Adams offers a subdued piano-and-acoustic ode to being torn between lovers, chanteuse Chantal Kreviazuk warbles strongly about longing, and country singer Shelby Lynne seduces with a steamy soul number. Other highlights include Andy Stochansky, sounding like Belle and Sebastian fronting Travis; Jude's warm tenor and guitar tones conjuring the best power pop of the 1970s; and Sixpence None the Richer's new track, a beautiful string-laden delicacy. Despite how easy it would be for the sticky topics of desire and love to become sappy, Senior Year largely avoids such pitfalls. Better still, the album rarely sounds bland, coming across instead as a compilation of brainy coffeehouse poetry matched word for word by equally interesting instrumentation. --Annie Zaleski

5 out of 5 stars Most Gorgeous TV Soundtrack Ever .......2007-06-27

Felicity was my favourite tv show during high school. It was so easy to relate to the emotions the characters felt, even if some of the things they went through were a little unrealistic or at times too much for a teenager to understand.

This soundtrack - that is not available in Australia - is the most beautiful compliation of music I have experienced. The soundtrack definately captures the feel of the show. It is full of little gems - artists that are well-kept secrets (at least from this part of the world).

I am glad I purchased it. Now I will definatly have to track down the other three.

Get it if you can. Enjoy it! Reminis about one of the best shows ever on TV (when it was not all reality rubbish and celebrity tedium).

    Thanks.

I was and am a huge fan of Felicity. Her freshman year of college was the same year as mine so we kinda grew up and matured together. Senior year was a fun year with great music. I mean wasn't that one reason to watch the show? I like all the songs but my favorite is # 3 Its so pretty! Its a great CD that has a mix of lots of great artists!

Stokowski was famous for pulling Scheherazade out of shape, so that's not a fatal flaw. But in this case Bernstein does it without joy or involvment. You'd expect him to revel in Rimsky's colors, but nothing appeals to him. There's no doubt that Columbia Records expected him to conduct absolutely everything in the standard repertoire, and Bernstein usually complied cheerfully, giving us great recordings of any pops items. But every once in a while he turned off to the music completley. The instances I have in mind are Holst's The Planets, Strauss's Also Sprach Zarathustra, and this bloated, humorless Scheherazade. There's no reason to dissect the crime in detail--just know to avoid this, one of Bernstein's rare duds.

    5 out of 5 stars Cappriccio Espangol.......2004-06-02

I'm will be a Junior in high school in the fall. I love Cappriccio Espangol.... you're thinking how does a 16 year old know this song? Well my band played it this year and it sounded pretty close to the NY Philharmonic Symphony... I'm not saying that oooo yeah best band ever, just that we did a great job. If you don't believe me I'll send you our recording my e-mail is fab4nbandos@bellsouth.net.... anywho since no one cares... This really is a great CD I assure you!

    2 out of 5 stars I'm not crazy...........2004-02-10

This is by far the worst recording I've ever heard of Scheherazade. It is all the conductor's fault too. There's really no one else to blame. (Although the recording could've been better- way too thin sounding.)

I heard a long time ago on the Angel label, a recording w/the Paris Opera Orchestra & Rostropovich conducting. Now THAT was a Scheherazade to remember. I swear, this recording did exist. I'm not halucinating. The Bernstein recording is wrong for all the reasons the Rostropovich is right. It's almost like Berstein purposely tries to take the majesty & magic out of this piece. His tempos seem to be at complete opposites of what they should. I mean, come on- was he trying SO HARD to be a rebel that he forgot the composer's markings?! I know no one wants to do the same old recording of the same old piece, but hey, that's no excuse to screw up everything. This recording sucks so bad, I actually threw the CD away. (Normally, to me, that's like burning a book- but I couldn't even give this CD away to some poor unwitting fool.)

Keep looking, this isn't the Scheherazade for you, unless you're on a time constraint & budget. And I don't think this review "isn't helpful" just because you may disagree or think LB is a genius. Let's face it, almost every conductor has at least (usually more) one piece that is his kryptonite. Trust me. I also was lucky enough to recently find the old Rostropovich recording & transfer it to CD through my PC. WOW! Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus & his name is Rostropovich. It was as good as I remembered. I suggest holding out for better, especially if you've never heard the majesty of this piece.

    1 out of 5 stars Absolutely horendous!.......2003-12-01

Bernstein is one of my favorite conductors because of his careful attention to detail--he lets nothing slip by, no detail is unimportant, as is apparent on his numerous Mahler recordings. However, everyone has their moments, and unfortunately, this is one of Bernstein's worst--however, it's even worse for the New York Philharmonic.

This is one of the worst recordings I have ever heard of this piece, and the simple reason is intonation--and it is the intonation of the woodwinds, the piccolo imparticular. This can in no way go unnoticed--string intonation problems are usually covered by the large number of string players in each section. Woodwinds are much more exposed, and the piccolo, in particular, has absolutely horrendous intonation throughout the entire piece--it is almost half a step falt the entire time! In general as well, the woodwinds are mostly out of tune, which is the first noticable thing.

This is not an argument that can swing "Well can't you even look at the interpretation and give them credit for that...." NO, i can't, because the intonation is the most noticable thing in any recording, and when it is as bad as it is in this recording, I can't help but criticize it.....trust me, and if you don't, just listen to the beginning of the 3rd movement of Cappricio Espagnol......you'll understand then.......

    5 out of 5 stars Exciting..........2003-05-02

This is the version of Scheherazade I grew up with, and is by far and away my favorite. I have a copy of this on LP (the vinyl version is easy to find -- Columbia Masterworks MS-6069) and now I'm tempted to grab a copy of the CD and see how the master tapes fared over the years. I've recorded my vinyl copy to CD, and I'm guessing this must have been originally mastered for vinyl. Really curious what they did to the sound quality (is it butchered?) and I think I'll buy this CD to find out! Anyway, for sheer emotion you just can't beat this -- To me, Reiner's interpretation sounds phony and contrived in comparison (although technically a more accurate performance).

Ginuwine is a very talented artists who isn't getting much credit nowadays with artist like Omarion, Chris Brown, NeYo, and Lloyd getting alot of play but his albums are solid and consistent. Disregarding the first three tracks, the rest of the album is definitely good and when he was in New York with Joe, Avant, and Jagged Edge, his live performance stood out from the rest of them so if you get an opportunity you should definitely see him live.

    5 out of 5 stars The Senior.......2006-05-27

Ginuwine was always interesting to me... maybe since his second album, I also saw him at magazines, TV shows and live performances. Now I got "The Senior" as a gift of a friend of mine and I found it amazing. His lyrics, his music and his voice (If clearly influenced by R. Kelly) This album is simply one of the bests on my CD Collection. Ginuwine has earned my respect and he became oa favorite of mine... The only bad thing is that it has unnecessary skits, specially the one following "Bedda to have loved" called "Locked down The Movie" you'd better skip it before it starts

For the most part, I'm not into the kind of music that Ginuwine, and his contempories make. However, Ginuwine is one of the exceptions. I've purchased a few of his albums, yes I said albums, and he really knows how to put it down. "The Senior," in my opinion, is his best. "In Those Jeans," alone, is an absolute winner, and the rest, of the cuts, are, too, extremely good! I never thought that I would buy anything, by Ginuwine, until I heard "Pony." However, I was wrong, as I have three of his albums, and am now a big fan. Vocally, he's no Tevin Campbell. But, he has a quality, to his voice, that, definitely, makes you want to listen. With one note, you know exactly who it is! And, that, to me, makes him special. To be honest, I used to think that he was just another pretty boy, but, now, realize that I was wrong! As for his new release, as soon as it comes out, it's mine. As for the kid, I wish him continued success!

I remember this album when I was in the 10th grade. I love this album. It is as good as The Life album. The album is about Ginuwine's growth. This is his edgier album. The album is like his senior year. The album also reveals the real him. He graduated with this album. This album has been certified Gold. Remember, this was 2003.

This is has got to be one fo the greates Gospel Cd's ever. It won a Stellar Award, but should have won a Grammy as well. The choir is one or the best this side of Heaven. They not only sing, but the sing with an annointing. This is a must have for an library. I don't think there is any choir that can compare!!!

5 out of 5 stars On Time Praise........2005-10-10

It doesn't matter how old the CD is, the message is still fresh and up to date.

It never grows old when you are praising God, and this CD project embodies this - a now time praise.

    Completely enjoyed it.

Oh Yes, There is definately something about that Morton spirit. Lyrically and melodicly preaching on wax with the FGFB choir covering your back. This work of art has to be sanctioned at the highest level in order to bless so deeply.

    5 out of 5 stars It's Still Blessing Me.......2005-02-05

I was first introduced to Bishop's ministry in the early nineties through the song "Your Tears." What a song! I was later touched by "True Praise", and the "Story of Calvary." The song I listen to most is the title cut, "We Offer Christ," which makes me want to get saved over and over again if I could, because of its drawing power, but theologically we know that to be incorrect, I just wanted to express the anointing on this song. This particular project, and I have all of his cd's, encouraged me to visit the Read BLVD location of Greater Saint Stpehens in New Orleans several years ago, and to hear the choir sing live is a wonderful experience. I've heard Bishop Morton say that his choir was the best "this side of heaven," and when you hear them sing on cd the harmony will inspire you to visit the church as I did, and I live in Virginia. As a former program director for two radio stations, trust me when I say add this project to your library.

I bought this cd because Rex Allen Sr & Rex Allen Jr were both on it. I love all the songs on it and father and son sound terrific. I'm undecided if Can You Hear Those Pioneers, Ride Cowboy Ride (which is an old song of Marty Robbins), or Arizona is my favorite on it. The whole album is diffently a must on any country music fan's list.

4 out of 5 stars A great introduction to good Western music.......2004-07-10

Rex Allen Jr was the one who, by virtue of the wide-open Country radio formats in the 1970s, introduced me to Western music. Prior to buying the original "Best of Rex" album, my exposure to Western music had been limited to black and white movies with grainy pictures and even grainier sound, and I never gave the songs much consideration. But upon hearing "Can You Hear Those Pioneers?" and Rex's lively "Tumblin' Tumbleweeds/Cool Water" medley, I was hooked. His rich, smooth voice and comfortable delivery made me a convert. Hearing the sparse yet hauntingly beautiful "Kin to the Wind" on his "Brand New" album (not available on CD as of this writing) aced it for me.

On this album Rex Jr offers us a mix of some of his older cuts along with a few he hadn't released on his own before. On the pre-released orginals, his Dad's voice is mixed in to great effect; Western movie and recording star Rex Allen Sr's lower, coarser baritone adds a warm texture to the recordings. Although it's obvious that Rex Sr was advancing in years when his vocals were dubbed, his voice makes up in character what it had lost in strength from the years and is a perfect complement to his son's.

Of all the cuts here, "Yippi Cry Yi" is my personal favorite. It was the lead-off song on side 2 of "Oklahoma Rose", arguably one of the finest Country albums ever produced. Amazingly enough, this Western song actually got airplay in the 1980s, but remember, radio was more open and accepting then. I also really enjoy "Arizona", which naturally became that state's official song. However, there's not a turkey in this bunch so you won't be disappointed by the ones I didn't highlight.

The transitions between Rex's own work and the more traditional cuts like "Tyin' Knots In The Devil's Tail" and "When The Work's All Done This Fall" (two that Rex Sr recorded many years ago) are seamless, a testament to Rex's keen sense of how to write and sing traditional western music as well as the overall production.

I would have liked to have seen a few more songs, especially the aforementioned "Kin to the Wind" (written by the great Marty Robbin's son, Ronny). Better yet, a duet by father and son on the soulful "Streets of Laredo" would have been icing on the cake. Twelve to fifteen songs would have raised this to 5 stars from 4 in my book.

This album makes a perfect introduction for anyone even remotely curious about what good Western music sounds like when it's not confined to the soundtrack of fading films. Adults will appreciate it for nostalgia's sake, and kids will like it for the novelty of the old cowboy tunes. "The Singing Cowboys" would make a great ambiance track for western clothing stores, western-themed restauarants, etc.

Hopefully this compilation will gain new converts to this classic, wonderful sound. Thank you to both Rex Sr and Jr for doing their parts to keep Western music alive and kicking!

5 out of 5 stars Western Music at its best.......1999-12-25

Rex Allen Sr had the best voice of all the singing cowboys, maybe because it 'sounded' Western and he was a genuine cowboy from Arizona. Unfortunately, he appeared in movies and recorded Western songs when the genre was taking its last breaths. Rex Jr has a fine voice that seems to improve over the years. And when they sing Cowboy and Western music - there are few who can equal their unique sound. This compilation includes many classic Western tunes and each is sung with such depth and love for the music, they paint a picture in your mind of the countless scenes of the desert and Wild West of movies and TV. Senior and Junior should have much more airplay so this music won't be forgotten. And Rex Allen Sr fans can take heart in the fact that even with his unexpected passing, his music will live on thru the ages. This recording gives us all a hint of the greatness of both these fine singers and the wealth of outstanding music they've recorded over the years.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Ownage.......2003-07-26

One of the reviews I read mentioned that the conductor here used too much of a dynamic range, had too much vigor, etc. etc.

I ask - how much does this person know about this piece (the Four Seasons)?

This CD is the best Vivaldi CD I've heard yet, and I've heard a good many. Most of them rush through the more peaceful parts without showing a hint of feeling, or drag through more vigorous parts like the musicians and conductor are bored. But this CD lets you enjoy each movement of each concerto and actually feel what's being portrayed in the music.

I believe some of the parts that were referred to as bombast, etc., were from Summer. Summer, as all the concertos in the Four Seasons, has passages that depict storms. The storms in Concerto 3, Movement 3 specifically, however, are extremely violent. It's even written in the sheet music, which I own, that the parts are supposed to be violent! And if you're following along with what the music is portraying, then it'll give you chills.

I recommend fans of Vivaldi's Four Seasons look up the poems that were recited before each concerto. The poems explain what is being portrayed in the music. Ie, in Spring, the section after the main theme, with many seemingly random trills and 16th note runs, represents birds singing and chirping. The fast section after it represents the arrival of a spring thunderstorm, and thunder and lightning. Later in the movement, the birds return and then the music drifts away to flowing fountains of fresh water.

The Four Seasons really is a beautiful and brilliant piece of work. I think it goes without saying that it's highly recommended.

    2 out of 5 stars He's not really a Baroque conductor.......2002-02-25

I hate having to give this CD a fairly low rating. However, the fact is, Bernstein is a master at 19th Century music (and 20th as well), but falls down in Mozart and in Baroque. This CD is no exception.

His conducting of The Four Seasons, is what you may expect from Bernstein. He conducts with vigor, bombast, intensity, and other elements (such as a large dynamic range) that one doesn't typically associate with Baroque music. He doesn't have a stately grace or even a slightly cold touch - both of which I feel are vital to correctly perform Baroque.

So, if Bernstein's approach is your cup of tea, then you should, by all means, buy this album. You will love it. However, if you are more of a purist or traditionalist, then you should turn your attentions elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars It captured my heart!.......1999-08-17

This is definitely the best version of the four seasons I've ever experienced. Bernstein takes full advantage of power of the orchestra and brings each season alive. I couldn't stop listening to "Summer" over and over again. There were also a few other titles that I wasn't really familiar with that made me a true fan of Vivaldi.
