4 out of 5 stars The Platters.......2007-03-13

Great music if you enjoyed the 50's like I did. Brings back a lot of old and fine memories.

5 out of 5 stars a little background on the Platters.......2007-03-07

The Platters were perhaps the top group of the 50s with such huge hits as "Only you," "Smoke gets in your eyes," "the Great Pretender," "Red sails in the sunset," "Smoke gets in your eyes," etc. Those of you who loved American Graffiti probably noticed the presence of Platters hits on the radio as the teenagers drove around the California town all night long.

The personel has changed over the years. Only 4 people are now allowed to bill themselves as the Platters. Herb Reed ( a bassist), Sonny Turner,(lead vocalist), Zola Taylor (female vocalist) and Monroe Powell (vocalist)

According to the Herb Reed and the Platters web site, the Platters have recorded almost 400 songs. How many were hits? A large number to say the least. The Platters, of course, are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and have appeared in many movies.[...]

This is an exceptional album if you grew up in the 60's and 70's. Brought back many memories and is an excellent dance record. I play quite a bit and thoroughly enjoy every time I play. Great Selection!!!
I had to buy one for my sister and a friend.

A vocal talent of astonishing range and emotion, Tony Williams led the Platters through nearly two dozen Top 40 pop hits, starting in 1955. The Platters drew inspiration from predecessors such as the Mills Brothers, yet had a style all their own that came to be treasured by the first generation of rock & roll and doo-wop fans. This set features the group's Top 10 smashes "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," "The Great Pretender," "Only You," "(You've Got) The Magic Touch," and several others. Shy of the two-disc Magic Touch: An Anthology, this is about as good a Platters best-of as you can find right now--and at a budget price, no less. --Daniel Durchholz

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Contains the seven biggest hits, but not all the favorites........2005-05-09

Now thought of as a "doo wop" group because of the beat and the finger-snapping rhythms, the Platters, in the 1950s, set the scene for rock and roll, ushering in a new music which incorporated gospel and soul sounds never before part of the mainstream. The first all-black group to become universally popular, they influenced pop music for fifteen years and opened doors to the many black doo-wop groups which succeeded them into the 1960s.

Of the several "Best of the Platters" albums now available, this collection contains most of their biggest hits, including "Only You," their first #1 hit on the R and B chart, which then became #5 on the pop chart, when it crossed over; "The Great Pretender," their next hit, which was #1 on the pop charts; and "Magic Touch," "My Prayer" (another #1 pop hit), "Twilight Time," "I'm Sorry," and "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes."

It does not include several other memorable Platters songs, such as "On My Word of Honor," "You'll Never Know," "If I Didn't Care," or "To Each His Own." These songs, along with the previously mentioned favorites, are all available on one album if you search on Amazon for B000200Q2U, "The Very Best of the Platters."

The wonderful Tony Williams sets the pace as tenor soloist, with a voice ranging from a soft whisper to a soaring vibrato. The harmonies are mellow, the timing is superb, and the arrangements are terrific. The back-up voices are strong, and the album has been remastered to remove background "fuzz." Trend setters whose influence was felt for fifteen years, the Platters are an indelible part of the high school memories of a whole generation from the 1950s and 1960s. Mary Whipple

5 out of 5 stars excellant.......2005-05-02

I found that the album by the platters was great to hear and the sound was excellant I have been looking in stores all over my area(Boston) to no avail. It was great to find it on your web site.
I will contiue to search your webb site for other items in the future. Thanks for the wonderful memories. tony

3 out of 5 stars Not generous.......2003-12-09

Only 11 songs in this CD, Polygram of USA is not generous to consumer. As one reviewer stated, there are rooms for more songs. I can easily named some of these, such as Remember When, You never never know, Enchanted and I'll never smile again etc. Here I like to recommend another Platters' CD titled "Universal Masters Collection [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED] [IMPORT]", which is the best sounding Platters CD I've heard (I've already owned 4 greatest hits CDs of The Platters). This is the only one you can find stereo versions (genuine stereo) of 'Smoke gets in your eyes', 'Twilight Time', 'I'll never smile again', 'Harbour Lights' and 'Red sails in the Sunset', plus 'I'm just a dacing partner','I give you my word', all 17 songs in one CD which is preferable to this 11 songs collection.

4 out of 5 stars The Best of The Platters.......2002-05-30

The Best of The Platters did'nt have the songs on it that the LP
had back in the fifties. But it has most of the ones that I like.
The cd is worth the price and the wait.

Neal.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2006-03-08

Great sound - great songs. Lots of memories here and, as stated by another person, the songs in stereo really sound top-notch, but they all are great. If you like The Platters, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Best sounding Platters ever.......2003-12-11

This is The Platters greatest hits CD issued outside USA with 17 songs altogether and is the best sounding one you could find in the market. Remastered from original master tapes, this CD provides you with the stereo (genuine stereo) versions of 'Smoke gets in your eyes', 'Twilight time', I'll never smile again', 'Harbour lights' and 'Red sails in the sunset'. Even though there are only 17 songs in this collection and has space to accommodate more, I still highly recommend it as the remastered sound (both stereo and mono) is very good. It's worth all the money spent.

3 out of 5 stars Originals, But Too Many Are Missing.......2004-02-16

I'm an oldies DJ in New England, and I'd like to correct a misimpression offered by the sole reviewer posted here (2/25/04). The tracks on this CD are indeed original recordings--not recuts. You do need to watch out for recuts with the Platters--but not here. Problem is, though it does contain all the biggest Platters' hits, virtually all the lesser hits--those that peaked lower than #12 on the Billboard charts--are omitted in favor of some odd selections. You may be interested in hearing the Platters' rendition of "Sixteen Tons" (I wasn't), but where's 1959's "Enchanted?" Some lovely non-top-10 hits are sacrificed, and some pretty iffy material included. A better, more complete collection can be found elsewhere. But if you're looking for original recordings of the group's very biggest hits, this CD is perfectly adequate.

      1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2003-01-27

This CD is not what I expected. I admit I am a novice at purchasing CDs over the internet, but I didn't realize that this was a remake and never would have bought it if I had known. The packaging and information was misleading. It definitely does not have the great sounds of the original Platters.

        Album Description

This box set may save your life! `Atomic Platters' is the result of a years-in-the-making musical `Manhattan Project' that collects over 100 vintage Cold War songs and more than two dozen frighteningly naïve civil defense Public Service Announcements (many of these PSAs are voiced by celebrities such as Groucho Marx, Bob Hope, Pat Boone and Johnny Cash, to name just a few!) from the paranoid period that brought us fallout shelters, survival biscuits and uranium fever.

The artists who sing about the Bomb and the Red Scare on this set run the gamut from well-known stars like Bill Haley and His Comets, The Louvin Brothers, Marty Robbins and Wanda Jackson to fascinating obscurities like The Goldwaters, Janet Greene (The Right Wing's answer to Joan Baez!) and Dr. Strangelove and the Fallouts. In addition to music and PSAs, `Atomic Platters' includes two unintentionally hilarious full-length spoken word civil defense `scare' LPs: `If the Bomb Falls' and `The Complacent Americans.'

But why stop with mere sound? The Cold War was a multimedia horror show and Atomic Platters tops off its mushroom cloud of entertainment with a DVD (NTSC, Region Code 0) of nine bizarre civil defense and anti-Communist short films from the `50s and `60s.

Summing all this strange material up is a 292 page hardcover book featuring numerous arresting images from the Cold War era with intriguing text by Bill Geerhart of CONELRAD (conelrad.com), an organization devoted to the preservation and examination of atomic popular culture.

This collection is for anyone mystified by the current excesses of U.S. Homeland Security who wants to hear and see where the madness all began! You CAN beat the A-Bomb (again)!

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, amazing production--Spectacular!.......2007-05-31

There simply is no collection of nuclear war kitsch out there as breathtaking and complete as the Atomic Platters set. With five CDs of Public Service Annoucements and music, an attractive coffee table book filled with pictures of Civil Defense pamphlets and Cold War miscellena, and on top of all that, a DVD of unintentionally hilarious government propaganda films, including the iconic "Duck and Cover" film for schoolchildren, this package is unbelievable!

Well worth the cost outlay for true collectors. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Pointing Out an Error in wvmcl's "review".......2006-06-12

I am the co-producer of "Atomic Platters" and I wanted to point out an error in the June 8, 2006 "review" posted by "wvmcl" entitled "Not Quite Definitive." The box set does indeed include Warren Smith's wonderful rockabilly song "Uranium Rock." It is track 14 on disc 2. The fact that the reviewer didn't notice that this song appears on the set suggests that his / her analysis of the product was slightly less than thorough. As for the other track that the reviewer implies would have made the box set "definitive" ("Twenty Tons of TNT"), he / she is correct, this track is not included. It might interest the reviewer to know that there were a number of equally great songs left off the box set. Why? Even a Bear Family release has its space limitations.

Finally, in order to post this response, Amazon forced me to rate my own box set. I hope the vast Amazon public will excuse the fact that I gave it five stars.

4 out of 5 stars Not quite definitive.......2006-06-09

I can think of at least two songs that should have been on this collection but which are not on the track list:

        "Uranium Rock" by Warren Smith
"Twenty Tons of TNT" by Michael Flanders and Donald Swann

        5 out of 5 stars A truly outstanding collection.......2006-01-03

All I can do is echo the comments of the reviews that came before mine and say that if you are interested in "Atomic Culture," this set is a "must-have." Yes, it's expensive, but it's also definitive -- I couldn't believe how many songs there were that dealt with this theme, and I'd find it hard to believe they've missed any. The accompanying book is beautifully done, and the collection will provide hours of entertainment, weird nostalgia, and cultural education. My 17 year old daughter has been listening to these CDs with me, and she is utterly amazed at the content of some of the songs...as am I! Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars absolutely essential for all lovers of strange sounds and weird music.......2005-12-11

Holy crap! This is just about the most amazing box set I've ever seen! The second I heard about it, I knew it was going to be good, but I wasn't prepared for just HOW GOOD. Not sure how many of you are familiar with Bear Family Records, but they're a German label who specialize in super elaborate, incredibly detailed and well-researched releases, especially box sets, running the gamut from the women of Sun Records to the Everly Brothers to Ernest Tubb to Perez Prado to Flatt And Scruggs and on and on. Always very expensive and often hard to get, but once you lay your eyes and ears on one of their releases you realize it was worth all the trouble and worth every penny. And never was it truer than with Atomic Platters.

This years in the works set is a five cd, DVD, hardcover book, box set collecting "Cold War Music From The Golden Age Of Homeland Security", 5 plus hours of fifties and sixties, rock and roll, R&B and soul, either warning us of the dangers of Communism and the impending atomic war, or more playfully using the A bomb and Uranium and Communism as metaphors for love and romance and partying ("You Hit Me Baby Like An Atom Bomb", "Atomic Baby", "Fujiyama Mama", "Uranium Rock", etc.). Scattered throughout are loads of civl defense spots, most appallingly naive and utterly ridiculous, there's Groucho Marx explaining that we have a good chance of surviving an atomic war, Art Linkletter warning us to not use the phone in case of an atomic attack, and lots of other misguided warnings and advice from Bob Hope, Tony Bennett, Fred MacMurray, Tom Lehrer, Pat Boone, Connie Francis, Don Pardo, Johnny Cash, Boris Karloff and lots more, as well as tons of bizarre civil defense dramatizations and creepy little Leave It To Beaver style vignettes.

Then there's the music, lots of favorites you've heard on other comps, but an amazing amount or material you've never heard (and probably never thought you'd hear) anywhere as well as totally obscure tracks from some not so obscure artists. Some of the more recognizable folks: Roy Acuff, The Sons Of The Pioneers, Peter Sellers and Spike Milligan, Bo Diddley, Dexter Gordon, The Louvin Brothers, Carl Perkins, Bing Crosby, Bill Haley, Doris Day, Hank Williams and more, but the lure is definitely the hundred or so other tracks, all catchy or bizarre or both, from a wild cast of one hit wonders.

As if that weren't enough, there is also a disc containing two full length spoken word records released in 1961, If The Bomb Falls and The Complacent Americans, both ridiculous and paranoid, laughable and goofy, but also sort of sad and creepy. Wow. Then there's the DVD which contains 9 short films, over two hours of educational films, teaching us about Communism, the impending Atomic War, and the infamous "Duck And Cover" method of surviving an atomic bomb attack (and I'm fairly sure that the narrator of one of the films is none other than Thurl Ravenscroft, the voice of Disneyland's Haunted Mansion, and the singer of the "You're A Mean One Mr. Grinch").

Finally, there is the book, a massive 11" x 12" hard cover tome, chock full of illustrations, liner notes, photos, and a full page description with pictures and all sorts of extra info for every track in the box. Unbelievable. This is absolutely essential for all lovers of strange sounds and weird music as well as being perfect for history buffs too. And as it's that gift giving season, I can't possibly imagine a more perfect and amazing gift! WOW!
