5 out of 5 stars No Ball & Chain Draggin' Down This Lady.......2007-05-31

When Janis Joplin electrified the folk/blues scene with her incredibly propelled version of Big Mama Thorton's "Ball & Chain," I really wanted to hear more from the source. Unfortunately it wasn't until recently that I listened to this CD that features "Ball & Chain." I was surprised at the high quality of the entire CD--and also a little surprised how "modern" Willie Mae "Big Mama" sounded on the CD. I don't know, I guess I was expecting more in the line of an anthology, archival performance in the way of Bessie Smith recordings (and I am serious Bessie Smith fan too.)

Willie Mae originated "Hound Dog" that was later such a hit for Elvis. Elvis' version is great, but I prefer the original.

Legendary Muddy Waters accompanies on five tunes.

As for "Ball & Chain," you can really hear the influence the original had on Janis Joplin--and how Janis also made it her own.

This is CD is hardcore blues delivered in Big Mama's light, almost delicate style.

No, there's nothing "almost" about it. Big Mama Thorton's blues phraseology is both strong & unequivocally delicate.

Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thorton is one of the blues Greats, sharing the galaxy with other blues/jazz devas like Billie Holiday & Etta James.

4 out of 5 stars Best of Traditional Blues .......2007-01-11

Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton was much more than the originator of "Hound Dog" - she was one of the greatest Blues singers. She could be fun and sassy, and could also be plaintive and emotional. After Bessie Smith and before Koko Taylor, there was Big Mama Thornton.

BALL `N' CHAIN consists of 16 songs recorded 1965-1968 (tracks 1-8 in 1965; 9-14 in 1966; 15 & 16 in 1968). Disc packaged in black jewel case; total running time: 61:50. Booklet includes an essay by Chris Strachwitz, several black & white photos, and track information (songwriter credits, musician personnel, recording dates). Sound quality is good.

These are re-recordings of songs Thornton had previously recorded, including "Ball N' Chain", a song that was notably recorded by Janis Joplin. Tracks 1-8 feature Buddy Guy on Guitar. Tracks 9-14 recorded with Muddy Waters Blues Band (and also issued on Arhoolie's 2004 release "Big Mama Thornton with the Muddy Waters Blues Band - 1966"). Noteworthy are Thornton's complaints on "Unlucky Girl" about being followed by the FBI everywhere she goes.

This may be the Blues, but it is a joy to listen to. Thornton sings Blues ballads and fun up-tempo songs. I hesitate to call it "country Blues" because it just seems too sophisticated to be called that. Whatever it is, it's beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars How blue can she get?.......2006-11-27

Brilliant!
Big Mama's powerful vocal is accompanied by some really, REALLY, strong musical groups; including Muddy Waters' band on several classical interpretations ("I'm Feeling Alfight", "Sometimes I have a Heartache", "Black Rat"...).
My other favorites on this CD are, probably, "Unlucky girl" and "Little Red Rooster" (with Buddy Guy, Walter Horton and others) and, even more probably, the best of them all, erotically highly charged "School Boy" (with only instrument being the sugestive and even eerie guitar of Fred McDowell)...
Some songs ("Swing it on home"...) unfortunately cross the line of R/B and approach rock 'n' roll, but it is only minor problem on this brilliant CD... Every unce of blues this lady carries is worth hearing!

Great songwriter ("Sweet Little Angel"...) and great interpreter, Big Mama Thornton is one of the best blues musicians I've encountered so far...
Oh yes, what was the name of that movie star hip-shaking white boy who also tried to sing Leiber and Stoller's "Hound Dog"?

5 out of 5 stars The classic 1960's Arhoolie sessions!.......2004-05-09

Although these are not as powerful as her Peacock recordings of teh 50's, one should not overlook her Arhoolie sides fro mthe mid 60's(to late 60's). Ball b' Chail is a classic, as well as the Gospel tinged Wade In The Water and Sweet Little Angel(covered fro meveryone from BB King to Etta James). This is a powerfu lset of rockin' blues, and a couple of slower ones too ,but for the most part this is great jump blues and the msuic swings, stomps, and jumps, as well as rocks! Even the slower stuff rocks! Big Mama dodn't recrd too much that wasn't worth listening to ,and aside from her Peacock recordingd. these are her msot essential sides, and are a major highlight of a long lustrious career as a blues diva! Also Mama Thornton has influenced everyone from rock singer Janis Joplin to new blues diva Candye Kane. Thornton was a powerful singer, and this cd should not be overlooked, and should be essential to blues fans. Even myself, strictly a fan of rockabilly music, love all of Thornton's work from the 50's and 60s'.

5 out of 5 stars Exellent rockin' blues and rollicking r&b and jump blues.......2004-04-13

This cd features Mig mama Thornton hollerin' her way thru a versitile set of jump blues, slow drags, and rockin' blues. Although if you want to make a 1st purchase of Mama thornton start with Hound Dog-The Peackock Recording, as a 2nd purchase you can't go wrong with these somewhat later sessions. Lot's of fun, rough and roudy blues.

5 out of 5 stars A True Desert Island Disc.......2007-07-22

Quincy Jones' best album.
This is one of the great "concept" discs, based on the juke joints that served as makeshift nightclubs dotted across the landscape in the south in decades long gone by.
With a stellar cast of musicians as his instruments, Quincy literally creates the atmosphere of his own juke joint in track 1 and then runs with a gorgeous, beat filled hour non-stop after that.
The sound quality is fabulous - let it roll over you with the lights low and it will transport you to another time and with its energy and rhythms
I've purchased two copies of this CD for myself, given two as gifts and, of course, have it on my iPod.
Everyone I've turned on to this album has thanked me.
Highest recommendation. Its just great.

5 out of 5 stars Q's jook joint.......2007-02-05

this is my second copy of this c.d. i bought it skeptically when it first came out just because of all the diverse artists that were listed. there is not a bad, or "filler" song on this album. it is timeless.

5 out of 5 stars QUINCY'S GREATEST WORK.......2007-01-13

I LOVE THIS CD SO MUCH THAT, I HAVE PURCHASED IT TWICE. THE SONGS ARE TIMELESS. MY FRIENDS OFTEN COMMENT WHEN THEY HEAR THE CD PLAYING IN MY HOME. MY FIRST CD WAS DAMAGED AFTER YEARS OF USE, SO I HAD TO PURCHASE IT A SECOND TIME, AND IT IS MONEY WELL SPENT. THIS IS A VALUED ADDITION TO MY MUSIC COLLECTION.

5 out of 5 stars Jook Joint Still Jumps!.......2006-11-10

Reworked oldies have added vigor and zip. Quincy is truly a giver! Tones and melodies are racked with subtle and beautiful overlays. Album is still lovely in 2006!

The unbelievable raw talent of a young Milton Campbell is in grand display on this collection of early-1950s Sun classics. Milton hadn't yet honed his blend of cutting electric blues, New Orleans-style R&B, and deep country soul; he seemed at this point to move from one to the other rather than trying to fuse them into a cohesive style. The payoff here, however, is in his ferocious delivery, both in terms of his vocal performance and his steely guitar work. Fueled by Ike Turner's pumping piano, Milton assuredly blisters his way through a range of his own material, offering buzzing, razor-sharp guitar flurries and soulful vocal moans, and reminding us once again of Sun's prestigious origins as a blues label. --Marc Greilsamer

Long after their peers packed up their instruments and headed north, guitarist Big Jack Johnson, drummer Sam Carr, and keyboardist-harp player Frank Frost have remained firmly entrenched in the Mississippi Delta both in music and in life. This rollicking 1979 session was their first as the Jelly Roll Kings, but the telepathic interplay between the three had existed for decades. Their sound hearkens back to the untamed blues of Sun Records' early years as they channel everything from boogie-woogie to country blues through their pawn shop amps. What comes out of those amps is crude, naked juke-joint blues. Their impassioned version of Big Jay McNeely's "There's Something on Your Mind" sets the standard. With Carr's steady beat providing the momentum, Jackson's repeating guitar lines crackle, and his urgent Guitar Slim-styled vocals rise to meet the swirling notes of Frost's Farfisa organ. It's a great song on a highly recommended album. --Ken Hohman

3 out of 5 stars Gems from Vee-Jay.......2005-11-30

Two CDs full of wonderful gems from the 1950s and 1960s - gospel, soul, R&B, blues, pop, doo wop, they're all here on this Metro re-issue, in good quality sound, although a few of the tracks have been slightly truncated. A few old chestnuts share space with less familiar but welcome tracks from the El Dorados, Betty Everett, Little Richard with Jimi Hendrix, Elmore James, Rosco Gordon and many others.
The original July 1958 recording of Hank Ballard and the Midnighter's historic The Twist was made in Miami FL for Vee-Jay but unreleased at the time, the song appearing instead on a November 1958 re-recording for Federal, originally as a B-side in 1960. The rarer Vee-Jay recording is listed here, complete with recording date and anecdotal information, but is actually the Federal/King hit recording, presumable due to some kind of licensing error.

4 out of 5 stars Let me come inside........2006-01-12

This is an excellent compilation of some of Slim Harpo's best recordings. Slim played the blues in a way that was accesible to a mainstream audience. He actually had two crossover pop hits, with "Rainin' in My Heart" and "Baby Scratch My Back". His songs "I Got Love If You Want It" and "I'm a King Bee" are also recognized classics, although they are perhaps better known for their cover versions by British Invasion groups. Slim's songs are enjoyable, although he did tend to repeat himself. For example, both "Little Queen Bee" and "Buzz Me Babe" are rewrites of "I'm a King Bee". And he did rewrites of his other popular songs, too. But such a thing is common in the blues field, so he can't really be faulted for that. Blues fans should enjoy this CD.

4 out of 5 stars This is real John Lee Hooker.......2007-03-08

This caught my attention and I am glad I bought it. It seems like John Lee Hooker uncut at times but still gets me going listening to it. Great songs on it. New songs to me like 'No More Doggin' and 'Odds Against Me' are great old blues songs. The bonus cd has great songs from other artists as well. I recommend this cd for any John Lee Hooker fan who can handle some rough cut sounding songs.
