About the Artist
Blaak Thawt

The male-female hip-hop duo "Blaak Thawt" was formed in 1998 when Tony DeShawn discovered two bay area hip-hop talents, Tyranny Allen and Angela Simms. Together they have forged a sound that is destined to be a force not to be ignored.

Born in New York City and raised in the Fillmore (S.F.), Tyranny first appeared on the music scene in 1995 as a member of the rap group "Spade Cats" on the "Boom Town" record label owned by "Tony! Toni! Tone!" member Dawayne Wiggins. Then, in 1996 Tyranny was picked up by Shock-G to join "Digital Underground" after the murder of Tupac Shakur.

After his departure from "Digital Underground" in early 1998, Tyranny, eager to get back into the rap game, answered an ad Tony had placed in BAM magazine and invited "Big Tone" (formally known as "DeShawn") to see him perform at a nightclub on Jack London Square in Oakland. Big Tone had the beats and Tyranny had the flow, so they started recording almost immediately.

Shortly after that, an 18 year old local singing talent from Richmond, Angela Simms and her mother/manager Vera Simms answered that same BAM ad and arranged an audition. Without missing a beat "Blaak Thawt" was born.

Their debut CD release is a stylistically diverse combination of uncensored rap (Tyranny) and ultra-smooth vocals (Angie "Smooth") painted on a sonic canvass of original hip-hop beats along the lines of "Jay-Z" meets "Monica".

However, make no mistake, this CD is not for the young and innocent. Filled with tales of hard-life in the inner city, "Blaak Thawt" paints a sound mosaic that is both disturbing and beautiful. Big Tone's production qualities cover the hip-hop spectrum from the crystal clear "high-budget" sound to dirty "lo-fi" street joints. Together they create a compelling masterpiece that is sure to usher in the new millennium.
