5 out of 5 stars Wonderful set of orchestral music for an amazing price.......2007-08-05

I will admit that when I first ordered this 20 cd set from Amazon I was very skeptical and hesitant. I figured what kind of quality am I going to get for $16.97?! But when I got it in the mail and started listening to some of the cd's I was more than pleasantly surprised. The music contents on each is cd has the complete versions of the each song or theme. You know how a lot of cd sets just have the short versions or arrangemnts of songs to cut down on the price, but not on this set. Every cd runs anywhere from 1 hour to 2 hours of listening time. Even though the box set is called orchestral spectaculars if you like piano music there is a Liszt cd in the set with The Fantasy on Beethoven's The Ruins of Athens for piano, Malediction for piano and orchestra and Grande Fantasie Symphonique on Berlioz's Lelio for piano and orchestra. There is also a Rachmaninov in the set with his First Piano Concerto in F Sharp Minor and the original full length 30 minute version of his Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. Even if you listen to mostly piano music there are many versions based on them. For example, Brahms 21 Hungarian Dances that were written for solo piano, but in this set they are orchestrated. I had never heard the pieces like that before. It was nice to get a different perspective of the music. The same goes for Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition also written for piano, but here it is in a symphonic form and I enjoyed it just as much as the solo piano version. If you love opera, but are maybe someone that likes the orchestral part more than the singing there are many cd's in this set for that as well. There are 2 cd's of Wagner's music with my favorite prelude of all time Isolde's Love Death from Tristan and Isolde. Overtures from all of Rossini's and Rimsky Korsakov's operas. I think this cd would be a great place to start for someone who is new to classical music and doesn't want to spend a lot of money or if you love classical music as I do and want to hear new versions of your favorite pieces or just want to add to your cd collection you can do that for under $1.00 a cd. How many times have we all spent more than the price of this set for only one cd? I highly recommend this set. The sound quality and choices of music are excellent. Anyone who buys this will not be disappointed.

The Academy Award®-sweeping film Amadeus wisely pinned much of its dramatic thrust on Mozart's gloriously eternal music, and its soundtrack remains a concise yet rewarding introduction to Wolfgang's spectacular oeuvre. This newly remastered "Director's Cut" edition is a companion to the expanded DVD and features 24-bit encoding on two 24-karat-gold discs, sharpening the sonic clarity of the performances of Neville Marriner and the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields to near perfection. The performances (which, Marriner notes, crucially served as templates during actual production) have also been augmented to match the expanded new video edition and include a new, 2001 recording of the Adagio in C Minor for Glass Armonica, K. 617. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent .......2007-01-04

This soundtrack is an excellent review of some of Mozart's most beautiful works. His compositions are timeless and moving. No personal media library can be complete without him.

5 out of 5 stars Amadeus is a great movie and an equally great soundtrack!.......2006-07-02

I have to admit, I didn't like classical music before I saw the movie Amadeus. After seeing how they used the music in the movie I had to have the soundtrack. I debated for a day or two over which version to buy, and finally chose this one, since it has Salieri's march to welcome Mozart. Not a huge addition, but it's the complete soundtrack, which is what I was after. Before I received the cds, I was wondering "What's the big deal about them being gold cds?" The sound quality is magnificent, you hear all the music clearly, even the softest strings. These cds capture the sound as it was in the movie (possibly even better...)The booklet that comes with it is full of information and pictures, including a synopsis of the film, and detailed information about the musical selections. I would recommend this to anyone who liked Amadeus, or anyone who loves Mozart's music.

The only negative thing about these cds is that the tracks were labelled incorrectly, repeating the title of one song many times instead of having the correct titles. It was easy enough to fix in my media player but it was frustrating. Don't know if I got a bad copy or not, but the track listing shown on Amazon.com helped me to fix it.

5 out of 5 stars Amadeus rocks!.......2006-02-21

It was a Valentine gift to a friend's boyfriend and he loves it and has been listening to it all the time. Delivery was timely, too. I'm overall very satisfied! Thanx!

5 out of 5 stars It is miraculous!.......2005-06-06

So said Antonio Salieri to Mozart's wife about his music, and this Special Edition Gold Cd set understands this statement. More precisely though, it is Sir Neville Marriner, the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields and the various opera singers who should receive all the praise for this superb achievement. I have never heard such an authentic and high-quality recording of Mozart's music before. Thanks to the 24-bit encoding and the exceptional quality of the recording, the beauty of Mozart's music sounds as I believe it should. You can hear even the slightest or faintest of strings. Other recordings are simply lesser because of the tempo that is either too slow or too fast and the average clarity of the instruments. If you want to discover Mozart's music for the first time or complement your copy of Milos Forman's magnificent film, this is the set you have to get because it quite simply gets it right. The high price is all worth it as you get transported by this awesome music. It's a pity that classical music is now perceived to be reserved for a niche of artsy and boring people. That couldn't be farther from the truth! If people could just take the time to listen, just for a few minutes.

5 out of 5 stars 24K Gold & 24 High Bit Remastering = the definitive edition!.......2005-01-25

There are several different editions of Amadeus soundtracks ranging from single-disc to 3-disc sets available all at the same time, and it can be quite confusing at first.

After some research I ended up debating on whether to get the cheaper 1991 3-disc standard edition (ASIN: B000000XBV) or this 2002 2-disc special edition with '24 High-Bit' remastering. I had initial doubts that the latter contain the same 30 tracks, since it is only a 2-disc set, and decided to take a chance only after visiting the label site to confirm that it contains all 30 tracks as well.

Just a few days ago, it arrived from Amazon in a double-cd jewel case with a 30-page well-designed booklet, which has the movie sypnosis, individual narratives of almost all tracks, 2 articles about the movie and interspersed throughout with colourful scenes from the movie.

I discovered that the two '24K Gold' cds are able to contain the same number of tracks as the 3-disc standard edition because each disc is literally jam-packed to the brim, at 78.07 and 79.28 minutes respectively!

Due to the new '24 High-Bit' remastering, the sonic quality is excellent and perhaps die-hard fans of the earlier standard edition may even want to include this in their collection as well.

For those who are thinking of owning only one edition, this is the definitive edition to get if you really enjoyed the music in Amadeus and want the very best quality possible.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A treasure in the Brahms lieder catalog.......2006-09-29

Acclaimed as she was as a lieder singer, Jessye Norman showed a special affinity for Brahms. She made no less than three complete recitals of his songs, more than any other singer I can remember except Fischer-Dieskau. Not every lied is a mstepiece, and most are either folk-based or imitate folksongs in their simple strophic design. This can make for tiring listening after ten songs or so, but Norman's plush voice is to richly suited to Brahms's romanticism that it's hard to pull away.

Her initial recital on Philips with Geoffrey Parsons (1980) was a greatest hits collection, and Norman was wise not to overlap too many on her later two recitals with Barenboim. She was rather grand on that first disc. Here, she sings with great delicacy and sensitivty. In many ways this is her best Lieder recording, despite the unevenness of the material. Don't expect Mainacht or the famous lullabye or Von ewiger liebe. And I wouldn't advise anyone to tr and listen to this two-fer straight through. That said, Barenboim equals Norman in his artistry, so all told, this release is a treasure.

5 out of 5 stars Some of Brahms' best by an incomparable singer.......2006-01-25

Ask someone about Lieder, meaning basically German "art songs"
and he or she will immediately think of Schubert or perhaps
Schumann. Brahms is just not that well known for his songs,
and it's a shame because they are among his best works.

Jessye Norman is famous for her artistry in Lieder; I still
recall hearing her in recital over twenty years ago. This is
a fabulous recording; you will fall in love with most of these
songs on first hearing. As a bonus, the two record set actually
includes full texts and translations. whereas the trend
these days is to omit those and you're lucky if the company
offers them "on line". This is among the most treasured recordings in my
huge collection. Don't miss it!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2002-12-24

This is a wonderful album and should be in the collection of everyone who cares about Lieder. I use to study how she works her magic with a song, and it is worth digging into a single piece to see how she does it.

5 out of 5 stars ESSENTIAL.......2000-07-12

I have been waiting for years for this two CD set to be released. I have had the recording on vinyl since the 80's and, for whatever reason, DGG did not release it on CD til very recently. For fans of Brahms' songs (there are 52 of them here), for fans of Jessye Norman's magnificent soprano, for fans of Daniel Barenboim's pianism, this is an essential album. To make it even more enticing, the price, online, is quite low.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fennell's masterpieces extend beyond Tokyo.......2004-08-05

Fennell has produced the most extraordinary recordings with the Tokyo Kosei winds and this cd is no exception. I purchased this cd to get a wider view of his conducting brilliance. Every song is played with perfection (besides a few trumpet blips on A Chorus Line Medley). If you have never heard Carmen Dragon's version of America the Beautiful you must. Having played it several times it is a wonderfully composed piece. The Dallas brass ring triumphant throughout this cd. And the woodwinds are exceptional. This is a great value and you must purchase it if you are a fan of wind ensemble music. The disc is full of energetic pieces typical of Fennell's music selections.

5 out of 5 stars Fennell Finds Gold on the Beach.......2000-07-02

This 1994 recording of Frederick Fennell and the Dallas Wind Symphony is nothing short of outstanding. It combines Broadway and classical pieces with a wide variety of just plain entertaining fare. Beguine for Band highlights the mellow sounds of woodwinds sprinkled with the excitement of brass and percussion. The Chorus Line medley is Broadway all the way. Numerous seldom heard but utterly enjoyable pieces round out the album. It is sure to delight anyone who has played in a high school or college band. But its entertainment value is not limited to those folks. It's a good choice for everyone who wants to add fun to their music listening.

          .
Of over 600 songs, Fischer-Dieskau and Gerald Moore realized over three-quarters: these are those. Gerald Moore was of course as important to this project as Fischer-Dieskau.

          DGG's sound is excellent.

This set is a remarkable document of art.

This great work has a wacky and complicated plot that involves a Soviet athletic team's adventures in the decadent and capitalistic West. Musically, the Western locale offered the composer a chance to indulge his enjoyment of Jazz and other "bourgeois" art forms, and you get the distinct impression that it's the naughty bits that interested the composer most. When Stalin saw Shostakovich's third ballet, The Limpid Stream, and condemned his music, all three of his dance works disappeared from sight without a trace. The composer never wrote another. It wasn't until a few years ago that Gennadi Rozhdestvensky revived the work in its complete form, and this magnificent recording is the result. --David Hurwitz

Shostakovich's ballet music tends to reflect the Soviet proletarian optimism of the 1920s and '30s. His ballets of this period tend to be filled with images of muscular factory workers and happy, devoted farmers in clockwork routines, working for the collective whole. Shostakovich's ballet, The Golden Age (1930), is from this period and is full of goofy waltz rhythms and buoyant, frenetic melodies. The actual production of the ballet was a failure, but not because of the music. No one knew how to dance to it. Still, The Golden Age remains one of Shostakovich's greatest ballets. --Paul Cook

          5 out of 5 stars Not a dull moment - A neglected masterpiece.......2006-07-12

The music of the Soviet composer Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975) is often divided into an early period and a later period, with the first composition of the later period being his popular fifth symphony. The event affecting the change in style between the two periods was an article appearing in Pravda in 1936, which criticized "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk," an opera composed by Shostakovich. Apparently, this was an article that appeared at the directive of Stalin, who had walked out on the performance of the opera in disgust. With the publication of this article, the free-spirited, demented, wacky inventiveness (if you can imagine such a combination) of Shostakovich's music came to an end, with the composer adopting a more personal approach. The masterpieces of Shostakovich's early period include the above mentioned opera, the epic Symphony No. 4 and the first of Shostakovich's three ballets, "The Golden Age."

The story of "The Golden Age" concerns a group of Soviet soccer players, who travel to a decadent country in Western Europe. In the words of Shostakovich: "Throwing into contrast the two cultures was my main aim in the ballet. I approached the task in the following way: the west European dances breathe the spirit of the depraved eroticism which is characteristic of contemporary bourgeois culture, but I tried to imbue the Soviet dances with the wholesome elements of sport and physical culture." The problem with this statement is that it sounds like Shostakovich is having just a little too much fun imitating the music of the "bourgeois culture" which he wasn't supposed to like, while the "wholesome" music of the Soviet soccer players seems just a bit corny. But, this is what makes the music of Shostakovich interesting, and a real hoot to listen to.

If you are a Shostakovich fan, you are probably familiar with the four movement suite from the ballet, and if you were entertained by that selection, you should certainly get this complete version. The music from this two hour (plus) ballet is far more varied than the suite would suggest. Also, the suite contains none of the work's outrageous finales. The finale from Act One (CD 1 - No. 19), for instance, starts off as a pleasant fox-trot (those familiar with the first piano concerto may recognize this theme), but the music quickly fugues itself into a frantic frenzy of blaring brass, psychotic xylophone playing and a series of gong crashes for good measure. Come to think of it, "The Age of Gold" contains more gong crashes than other piece of which I am aware.

The ballet is filled with several other distinctive movements. The "Sports Contest" movement (CD 2 - No. 3) sounds like a demented "Ukrainian Bell Carol." Another favorite is rhythmically deranged "Tap Dance." The orchestration of this music is always colorful, and includes some rarities, including a saxophone, a flexatone, a banjo, and in one movement, a crank. Further, it should be mentioned that this ballet isn't delicately scored. The texture is dense with percussion and brass with very busy writing for the strings and woodwinds.

I think the enthusastic playing by the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra is great. The recorded sound is quite good as well.

Make no mistake; this ballet is not part of the tradition of Tchaikovsky. However, if you appreciate the sarcastic wit of Shostakovich, the complete recording of this ballet is indispensable. For those unfamiliar with the early works of Shostakovich, and are curious, this CD is an excellent introduction. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Good performance of a quite forgotten work........2006-02-06

Shostakovich's The Golden Age was his first complete ballet to be fully represented on the stage, something that gave Dimitri lot of troubles because of the complexity of this music in the early years of the Soviet Union, in which the audience was not very open to new sounds and in which the official composer's Trade Union was pointing as `formalist' every music different of the socialist canon based on easy forms composed to praise the benefits of the socialist revolution. In the premiere some of the players and most of the dancers thought this music was unplayable and impossible to dance, something that of course has changed very, very much in the last years.

Based on a sports competition between western and communist athletes, the composition is highly propagandistic, representing the capitalist decadence by jazz and Foxtrot motives and the communist value by the strong and athletic dances of the soviets. Anyway, the music is quite good, typical from DSCH early period, like his three first symphonies, The Nose, Piano Sonata number one or this own ballet.

The performance is good as it's very good the recording too. Rozhdestvensky knows Shostakovich's music fairly well as he has shown in many recordings, but I give it four stars as I think it could be a little better probably if it's recorded with one of the major orchestras.

Anyway, there is no other complete recording of the full ballet like this, the world premiere. I know some other versions of the suites, quite good, like Haitink's one, but for the complete ballet you should buy this one with no doubt.
