What's best about Best of the Bayou Blues is Tab Benoit's spankin' electric guitar tones and lean 'n' nasty licks on numbers like the ode to Cajun living "Voodoo on the Bayou" and the stinging, vibrato-drenched epic "These Blues are All Mine." This collection of Louisiana-themed tunes plucked from Benoit's five early Vanguard albums relate to the singer-and-six-stringer's swampland raising. They also showcase his versatility--veering from his customary plugged-in blues framework to a gentle acoustic take on the Delta classic "Mother Earth" to a roaring zydeco romp through Clifton Chenier's dancehall anthem "Hot Tamale Baby." Willie Nelson guests on "Rainy Day Blues," trading vocals and blending his nylon-string guitar with Benoit's Telecaster. A brisk jaunt through Hank Williams's "Jambalaya" seems more lagniappe than main course, but when Benoit's guitar comes crying into the soulful, homesick "Nice and Warm"--which plays out like a page written in this road warrior's diary on an especially lonely night--he more than compensates for the few slights among these 15 tunes. --Ted Drozdowski

5 out of 5 stars Tab's Blues.......2006-11-13

This maybe the perfect bayou blues CD and Tab Benoit delivers all these songs with finesse and energy. There are classic tracks - Drowin' on Dry Land, Jambalaya, Rainy Day Blues and Hot Tamale Baby. His self-penned titles all have classic blues appeal - all tracks are great. I love Nice and Warm; Gone too long; Crawfishin'; These blues are all mine. This CD is pretty much a best of and every track is guaranteed to raise your pulse. This guy is so good I just wished I lived in the US, so I could see him live. I also have his Fever for the Bayou CD, and I sense that Tab Benoit has a great sound - The Blues are here to stay. Tab Benoit has a great voice and he sure knows how to play a well worn guitar. Love the blues and you will love this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Bayou Allsorts........2006-11-13

This album highlights Tab at his best and includes a great selection of sounds from his previous albums. Some new songs and some old and traditional make it a spicy mix to suit the blues ear. No matter which type of blues genre you are into this can't fail to please.

Slim Harpo recorded really good rhythm and blues. He never got too fancy; he never forgot the importance of the groove. He died young in 1970, but his music reached the Rolling Stones (who covered his "I'm a King Bee"), the Kinks (who sang his "I Got Love If You Want It"), Van Morrison, and Them (whose first single was Harpo's "Don't Start Crying Now"). These songs and other greats--"Tip on In," "Baby, Scratch My Back"--are all included in this excellent collection of Harpo's greatest sides. --Robert Gordon

5 out of 5 stars Rainin' In My Heart.......2007-03-20

The first song I ever hear from Slim Harpo was "Rainin' In My Heart." I hadn't heard that song before and I had to find out who this guy was. I called up the a.m. radio station and actually asked the disc jokey who that was. That was back in the late 50s and times were simpler then. From that moment on, I was a Slim Harpo fan. Slim is great all the time but I especially was knocked out to hear again "I'm A King Bee," "Rainin In My Heart," and "Baby Scratch My Back." Slim Harpo doesn't blow you out of the room. He sneaks up on you and just gets you. I dig him and his music and I think you will to.

If you're not into ' 50's style electric blues....STAY BACK This is Slim Harpo...The KingBee......I litrally sleep with this CD

4 out of 5 stars Quit teasin' me, baby........2006-01-12

This is an excellent compilation of some of Slim Harpo's best recordings. Slim played the blues in a way that was accesible to a mainstream audience. He actually had two crossover pop hits, with "Rainin' in My Heart" and "Baby Scratch My Back". His songs "I Got Love If You Want It" and "I'm a King Bee" are also recognized classics, although they are perhaps better known for their cover versions by British Invasion groups. Slim's songs are enjoyable, although he did tend to repeat himself. For example, both "Little Queen Bee" and "Buzz Me Babe" are rewrites of "I'm a King Bee". And he did rewrites of his other popular songs, too. But such a thing is common in the blues field, so he can't really be faulted for that. Blues fans should enjoy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars A Bluesman To Remember.......2004-11-24

If you can say you knew Slim Harpo's work without an English group (The Rolling Stones) or individual musician (Eric Clapton) having had to bring it to your attention some years later, as has often been the case, then good for you. I remember going into this hardcore hillbilly bar (too young to be there) and hearing "Rainin' in My Heart" play often on the jukebox. It was 1961. Everybody seemed to know who it was. That was the first time I could put a name to a familiar singer on a "black only" radio station in Memphis, Tennessee. By the time "Baby, Scratch My Back" came along maybe 5 years later in the midst of British rock, protest songs and Nancy Sinatra, it sounded like a throwback to the 1950s. Slim Harpo was one of the few bluesmen who had a national audience (Motown was in full swing but that's a different thing). This package does in fact have the best of Slim Harpo as I remember his music from both before and after his breaking into the national mainstream. Unfortunately, just as it seems many of his fellow bluesmen did, Slim harpo died at an early age, he in 1970. He was 46 years old. Buy this thing.

5 out of 5 stars A knockout R&B singer, that will bedazzle you..........2004-05-19

A heavily rhythmic jump blues/R&B singer, who has a rough and rowdy style. This music will have you stompin' on your living room dance floor, you'll be uncontrolably jitterbugging across your dining room into the kitchen.

A great cd, that will appeal to fans of blues, roots of rock'n'roll, swing, and rockabilly. Though Slim Harpo is a "blues" artist, his music would have been considered r&b back in the 50's, and now would be categorized as jump blues. A perfect beat for swing dancing, this music was big in jukeboxes at Juke Joints & roadhouses, across the USA in the 50's. There are a few chart hits that he had, and his popularity was immense.

A great cd, is the bottom line here.

    5 out of 5 stars Leroux Roux.......2003-12-29

Leroux is the best band of all time. I saw them personally at City Stages in Bham,AL this year and they rocked my entire face off. I think they are the most underrated band of all time. I say they should go on a reunion tour. If they hadn't broken up they could have gone down in history as the greatest band of he universe.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Exciting Music You Will Ever Hear.......2003-01-30

As a music fan with hundreds of CD from a wide range of artists, I must admit that this is my favorite album of all time, one that I never tire of playing. It's the kind of music that gets better each time you hear it. This prolific group is perhaps the most underated band ever to record on a major label. As they toured hard, dancing outside of superstardom in the late 70's and early 80's, they wrote, produced, and recorded an incredible catalog of music that ran the gamut from cajun rock, to pop, to soaring power metal/wall of sound ballads - all of it full of intelligent lyrics, melodic bass lines, crisp guitar licks, and some of the best three part harmonies ever put to tape. The musicianship is unmatched. Although Capitol and RCA have been reluctant to re-release the four original gems that are collecting dust in their vaults, you can relive the excitement with this collection, which has excellent production values, thanks to the quality of the original recordings, and Razor & Tie's great digital transfer. Further collections are available at laleroux.com. Regardless of your tastes in music, I think you will be impressed, if not amazed.

    4 out of 5 stars Always a Bridesmaid.......2002-06-25

LeRoux was and still is an excellent band. Over the past few years, almost all of their individual albums have also been released on CD. (You just have to work a bit to find them...small releases on small labels. The last unreleased on CD album, "Keep The Fire Burnin'" arrives on CD for the first time in July 2002!) For all but the most ardent fans, like myself, this compilation is the best. It's an excellent sampler of a band that spent years supporting a number of major touring acts, but never seemed to ascend to the limelight themselves. In my humble opinion, the only glaring omission from this collection is "Mystery" from the 1980 album "Up", but beyond that this is an excellent and very representative collection.

4 out of 5 stars Not all of their best...but close.......2000-02-22

For those of us in the South who loved their music, this collection simply teases us. It is too bad the origional 2 albums are not available on CD, because they were fabulous! Too bad LP's don't last forever, since mine are over 20 years old, and they sound like it. For those who love this band, this is all that is left, and this CD was wonderful. For those who remember the origional LP's, this collection falls short of representing a fabulous band with incomparable talent. We miss you Jeff Pollard.

5 out of 5 stars Le Roux lives on.......1998-07-24

These songs are still being played in New Orleans, La in clubs. After all these years New Orleans Lady is still requested at the famous Pat O'Briens Piano Bar on Burbon Street. All around south Louisiana you can hear the sweet sounds on LeRoux.

5 out of 5 stars Laid back and captivating.......2002-01-23

There's no such thing as a bad Lightnin' Slim recording. This one is great. Lightnin' ranks with Howling Wolf and Muddy Waters as an artist but is lesser known because his label, Excello, was distributed mainly in the south, and that's where he played. The folk blues revival missed him, but you should not. If you love the postwar blues you'll find Lightnin's laid back drawling delivery, and his basic but moving sidemen's performances really deliver the heart of the blues. I could listen forever.

4 out of 5 stars Another Excello Gem.......2000-06-27

This is an excellent collection of raw blues from a vastly underated artist. Lightnin' Slim (and other Excello artist for that matter) is as authnetic as Lousianna swamp blues gets. This is the stuff that paved the way for bands like Credence Clearwater Revival. The Excello label never got the recognition it deserved. If it weren't for Excello, Sun Records might not have been half the success that it was. If you like this album, check out Lazy Lester and Slim Harpo.

5 out of 5 stars The "Best Of Lightnin' Slim" Really Is!.......2000-01-15

I have six disc by Lightnin' Slim, and I must say this is the absolute cream of the crop. This is one of those albums that you will put on the CD player, put the player on REPEAT, and let 'er rip! There are songs on here that I have not heard in 40 years. It is almost like having a ghost in the house. I grew up in Louisiana in the '50s, and I know swamp blues when I hear it, and I am definitely hearing it here, in it's pure form, by my old pal, and favorite artist, Lightnin' Slim (Otis Hicks). This disc is not a bunch of out takes, but rather the sides that were released by Excello in the fifties, and actually had air play on such radio programs as those sponsored by Ernie's Record Mart, in Nashville, and Randy's, in Memphis. I also "heard it on the X." The digitization of this disc was done with great care, and it shows in the sound of it. And the actual disc itself is made to look like a tiny 45 RPM record, complete with the EXCELLO label! Cool! Another thing that has made this a real winner, and a must have, for the swamp blues listener, is the fellow who compiled this. None other than John Broven, the man who wrote the definitive work on swamp blues, and the whole Crowley crowd, with his book, "South To Louisiana", a must read for the serious swamp blues fan-atic. John also writes the liner notes for this disc. I guess that's about it. Check this one out, you will be glad you did.LYD

    4 out of 5 stars Great compilation.......2002-05-10

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

    1 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2001-12-15

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

4 out of 5 stars Trouble: The Best of the Excello Masters, my review from Barcelona.......2007-07-22

Silas Hogan this Lousiana Swamp Blues Master is a very good guitar and singer and you hardly can find some Hogan's discography currently. Nevertheless 'TROUBLE : The best of Excello Masters'certanly is obtainable and is a very good record full of classical and authentics Blues some of them superb although all of them are of a similar level.Hogan's relaxed energy and graceful singing become this wonderful record in delight. If you are be able to get some copy buy it, you'll be very satisfied. I give it 4 stars.

    5 out of 5 stars Can't Beat This.......2006-02-02

I lucked up on this one. I found it just by searching and listening to various artists. Every song is a blast. The info booklet introduced me to this amazing singer. The songs are fun to listen to and sing along with. If you are not in a good mood sitting down with this CD will soothe your soul and make you happy, and after being stung by a few CD's, which I have purchased, this one made up for them all. Buy it and have a blast, you will not be sorry.
