Ordered the product right before Christmas. Prior to it being shipped, I had a question. I e-mailed the customer service reps, and imagine my surprise when my inquiry was promptly answered on Christmas Eve !!!

The CD was exactly what I ordered, arrived in perfect condition and exactly on the day committed.

Thanks!

5 out of 5 stars Brings Back A Lot of Memories!.......2006-05-29

Curiosity Killed the Cat was one of my favorite bands back in the 80's and given their talent and unique sound I still can't believe that they weren't well received in the United States. Anyway, fans will enjoy this collection as it contains most of their hits and well known tracks (although I do agree that "Red Lights" should've been included, as another reviewer pointed out). For those unfamiliar with this band, their style is a jazzy, soulful type of pop- a much more sophisticated sound than most of the music of that era. It is upbeat and smooth at the same time- appropriate for all moods whether you feel like dancing, relaxing, or being romantic. If you're nostalgic for the 80's, give this album a listen and experience their underrated talent for yourself. This is a must for all fans of 80's British pop.

5 out of 5 stars A good compilation to get the idea.......2003-07-25

I'm their fan since "Down To Earth" entered the UK charts in January 1987. The first album "Keep Your Distance" was a huge success partly because all four (Ben, Miguel, Nick and Julian) look good, partly because of producer Stewart Levine and partly because of the hidden fifth member Toby Anderson; But should have been because of great music. This compilation includes most of this album, but misses "Know What You Know" and "Red Lights" - I'd say all tracks from the first album should be obligatory. But inclusion of "Curiosity..." is worth of mentioning, I have seen similar compilations without this one. Their second album "Get Ahead" (1989) was considered a commercial failure, although it's worth of listening. Their third album "Back To Front" (1994) can be left to store, because some BMG sublabel, after taking the band over from Phonogram (or was it Polygram?), has definitely forced the guys into trying to please teenage auditory again with cover versions of ancient disco hits such as "Killing Me Softly" and "Hang On In There", though some good original tracks can be found there too. Luckily, this compilation is made of only the material of the two first albums (with exception of "Bullet", which was the B-side of "Ordinary Day", and "Ball & Chain"). Buy the record, and you get a chance to listen to the best sophisticated white soul of the eighties. If you want to get more or get it all, you should search for the albums instead.

5 out of 5 stars Little Known Band -- Great Music.......2003-06-25

I was stationed in England in 1987 with the Air Force and saw these guys in a club. Very cool show. Smooth, layered, jazzy, thoughtful lyrics, very talented musicians. Buy the album, you will really enjoy them. Wet, Wet, Wet is a band from the same era and musical style, although a little more poppy.

4 out of 5 stars What? No "Red LIghts"? You're missin' out!.......2002-04-04

I am an avid Curiosity fan. I bought the first tape in the eighties when "Misfit" hit Mtv, (I'm only 29). I was one of the first to run out and buy the second tape, for "Name and Number". My only disappointment with this "Greatest Hits" is that fact that thee best song by Curiosity is "Red Lights" which can be heard on the first release along with "Misfit" and you can hear it as background music on the Movie "American Psycho" (when he killed the rich girl and the hooker), but wasn't on that soundtrack either. I still listen to that tape all the time, its classic, you can't date it. It is like Harry Connick, Jr. getting Jazzy, but he's not Harry. I can't figure out why it didn't make the cut here. Regardless, anyone who enjoys some relaxing tunes on a sunday drive...this is the one for you. And if Curiosity reads this....PUT SOME MORE MUSIC OUT...YOU'VE GOT SOMETHING SPECIAL!

This studio cast recording includes the full score to the newest stage version of Frances Hodgson Burnett's "A Little Princess." The classic story shows a young girl's imagination and personal strenght in overcoming tragedy and hardship in her life. Delightful for audiences young and old!

5 out of 5 stars One of Many Musical Versions of the Story by Hodgson-Burnett.......2006-08-04

I got this CD not too long ago and listened through it rather quickly. The songs are all very tuneful, and some of them are actually quite uptempo, even though a person would be inclined to think that a story where a girl goes through so much at such a young age would all be somber in tone.
This actually one of several versions of "A Little Princess" that is in musical form, but one of the few that have been recorded professionally.
I'd love to see it mounted on stage!!!

5 out of 5 stars A Comic-Opera Treasure!.......2007-01-28

Dittersdorf is a sort of working-man's Mozart; in fact, this opera sounds similar to some of Mozart's early operas. But Mozart sought to break the rules and to explore new musical ideas; Dittersdorf is not an innovator...yet he is no less a master! This performance, too, is a materpiece of refined (not always!) comedy; the arias include some extremely difficult vocal leaps and trills, yet the primary joy is the witty verse. W.H. Auden (no less!) ramrodded this translation to English. And Anna Russell, famed for her "Analysis of Wagner's Ring Cycle" steals every scene she's in! Ad-libbing shamelessly, her introductory aria, all by itself, is worth more than the purchase price!

5 out of 5 stars an obscure delight!.......2002-07-31

Eleanor Steber's image on the cover of this set caught my eye while rummaging through the cut-out bins of San Francisco on a recent opera whirlwind. What a lost treasure this performance is - recorded "LIVE" in NYC 1965! All the principles shine, their energy ebullient. Don't hesitate, buy it and smile before it disappears.

5 out of 5 stars British white light funk band.......2004-03-31

This album was produced by NATHAN EAST & ALLEN TOUSSAINT.The reason why two producers were employed was perhaps the sales problems. The production is very polished but not creative. The problem is the drum pattern is so monotonous that one cannot kepp on listening to the CD from start to the end.Besides, there is no memorable tunes in this disc. The producers wanted these songs to be more commercial.Unfortunately the strategy couldn't make it.My overall impression for this CD is therfore so so.

        Not very good,Not very bad.Somewhere inbetween.Sorry guys!

        By C.S.

Blue- eyed soul from the U.K.has always recieved lukewarm reviews in North America at best yet the public at large has been tortured by relentless airplay from the Michael Bolton's of the world.
While Breathe, Simply Red, Level 42, George Michael, and the acid jazz / old school 70's disco R& B of Jamiroquai have all had a measure of Stateside success, countless talented others like Go West and London's Curiosity Killed the Cat found difficulty in penetrating the North American markets though Go West had success when "The King of Wishful Thinking" was a hit off the heels of the 1990 box office smash "Pretty Woman" soundtrack.
The former only released two albums the first being " Keep Your Distance" and the second " Get Ahead"
This CD is a power- packed collection of live sounding funk with craftily arranged synth work and efficient not overworked horn sections that have been a predictable Achille's Heel of Jamiroquai's work.
"Get Ahead" is a hybrid of Curiosity with a touch of Level 42 elements neatly wrapped around Ben Volpierre's succintly laid back monotone cabaret style vocals.
There are a few gaps on the record but compared to many of today's offerings and Curiosity's spotty results on "Keep Your Distance", this 1989 release has some strong tracks that make it a solid effort.
The gaps? "Trees Dont Grow on Money and "Go Go Ahead" leave a bit to be desired and "Security Lady" is a bit iffy(listen for yourself I could be wrong) therefore "Brit Funk does have it's occasional pitfalls.
The gems? The record rolls out like a carpet on "Name and Number" then quickly shifts into second on the following track "Do Your Believing", arguably the best track on the CD. The drumming is solid and the bass line and synth arrangement work well in harmony making it a song representative of what funk sholud be- LIVE AND AMBIENT. "Cascade" highlights itself with a high- pitched slap bass bridge reminiscent of Mark King's exploits in Level 42 or a Marcus Miller fusion approach.
What makes for a great album is when one can have a healthy debate over which song is the best and when you have more than a few that you can make a case for.The follow up track "First Place" is a well-written power ballad accentuated with a first class arrangement where the song goes from a canter to a nice steady gallop, picking up in tempo that adds a powerful punch with skilled finesse and power drumming adds the live element that is lacking in today's stagnated and watered down machine driven R&B.
Here you get an balanced attack as is the case on the back-side of the album on the killer track " So Well" with the punchy hornsthat come from out of nowhere on occasion layered on silky smooth synths and a rolling bass- line similar to John Taylor's work w / Duran 2. But there's more punch and prominence in sync with the drumming. A very classy track that can be sprung on the unaware victim who becomes intrigued by the musicianship that they are un-accustomed to hearing on pop radio in this millinieum
"Something New,Something Blue" like " First Place" qualifies for nice candlelight music status and serves as a pre-lude to the band picking up the tempo on the dance track "Keep on Trying" where Volpierre 's point of emphasis is the line "you know my work is therapeutic".
Indeed. "Get Ahead" isn't what "St. Pepper" was to the Beatles or what "Physical Graffiti" was to Led Zeppelin or any other landmark album in music history, but it foes offer a textbook on how well crafted funk can be both timeless and enjoyable.
Therefore it is a nice surprise attack CD to own. It will beg some to ask the (?) queation how come this record wasnt a hit and why did they stop recording?
Again many LP's with weak tracks suffer and make for a poor album. But with " Get Ahead" there are few gaps and the ones that do exist are well comphensated by the firepower of the strong tracks here, making it a admirable effort and certainly worth a music lover's time and money to invest in. If you like 80's and / or 90's fumk and groups of the like be it Level 42 or Jamiroquai or 70's icons like Heatwave, Slave, Commomdores, Cameo, Switch, Gap Band, etc then you will like this. But the encouraging aspect to "Get Ahead" is that it is a record that can even raise the eyebrow of he most skeptical NON-FAN of R&B dance music. Solid CD !

in 1995 this cd was stolen from my convertible and i was unable to find it again as it is long out of print. i am so glad amazon stocks it. it is a wonderful record, definitely better than their second one and very different from the first. they remind me of Swing out Sister and are much more dancewise as earlier. It is a shame they disappeared from the scene. somebody should remix one of their earlier efforts.

excellent cd. they should still be on the charts. the leads voice is sultry mixed with very "now" dance music. one i would take on a deserted island.
