Yo this is an outta sight soundtrack Bobby Womack & J.J. Johnson are great musical genuises.This soundtrack has a great impact on the movie Starring Anthony Quinn, Yaphet Kotto, & Anthony Francesiosa. The Best Track On There Is Harlem Love Theme because J.J. Johnson did a great fantastic job with this track and Bobby Womack did a great job with the other tracks such as If You Don't Want My Love,Quicksand,Hang On In There, Do It Right and Of Course Across 110th Street.I Think That People should get this soundtrack because Bobby Womack & J.J. Johnson will get you right the floor and start groovin' and moving.

originally released in 1972, this soundtrack compiles six tracks performed by bobby womack and peace, and five instrumentals by j.j. johnson and his orchestra. the music contained within is dead-on early 70s funk and soul. as you may expect, there are many quality tunes on this cd, although quite a few are repeated in different forms and a few more are simply your unoriginal standard [funky] soundtrack tracks. even if that bothers you though, tunes like the top notch "harlem clavinette" should keep you from being disappointed. there are plenty of short funky pieces that are just as original and experimental as they are accessible. plus, bobby womack is in top form and belts it out on all of his soulful selections.

J.J Johnsons score, and Bobby womacks vocal delivery make this a top funk soundtrack to own. Most def in the same league as Mayfields Superfly. Wonderfully powerful instrumentals sit comfortably next to the vocal tracks. The chase scene and laments are all in order. But it is the conceptual feel that holds this beauty together. J.J's full orchestral arrangements are funky and sophisticated, hot and cool as hell. I especially dig the title track and "If you dont want my love", and "quicksand". Both tracks are strangely depressing and deeply soulful.Respect the funk, Baby.

I borrowed this record from a friend of mine just for plain curiosity. Then the curiosity turned into enthusiasm as I heard Bobby Womack's voice. I already knew the first track, "Across 110th Street" from the "Jackie Brown" soundtrack, but I wasn't aware that Womack was such a talented musician. Then, my enthusiasm turned into admiration when listening the wonderfully played "Quicksand", surely the best song on this soundtrack. But J. J. Johnson's score also manages to capture the gritty realism of the streets and its surroundings, and the incidental dialogue that we keep hearing through the entire record helps us establish the link between Womack's words and the context of the film. Strongly recommended.

If you have any questions about what an incredible CD this is, go rent the movie, which is equally amazing. A film that walks the fine line between "gritty urban drama" and '70s blaxploitation, the story of good cop/bad cop, racial tensions, and people trying to make do features Anthony Quinn and Yaphet Koto, and everyone's fave, Anthony Fargas - - like Shaft and Superfly, the music resonates throught he film and is part of the vital backdrop. It ranges from funky to soulful, with Womack's gritty voice telling some great stories. The highlight tune of the movie is IF YOU DON'T WANT MY LOVE. - - Bobby Womack is an incredible singer/songwriter with a gritty and powerful voice who's songs sometimes mix a bit of folk, into sweet soul and funk. Though no one is comparable to Womack (he's an institution in his own right) I think some comparison's can be made to Terrence Callier... The soundtrack features some funk as well - - for an example a slick instrumental featuring a very funky Clavinet at the forefront (aptly titled Harlem Clavinet.) Another song I really dug is Quicksand, which really let's Bobby's incredibly soulful voice cut loose. - - This soundtrack is an incredible listen with or without the movie, but its interesting to watch the movie after hearing the soundtrack, because a lot of the songs on this album you kind of hear in passing, on the radio and here and there, and they almost pass you buy till you get the album, then you realize the heavy stuff that's in this film. Though J.J. Johnson is in on the game, this is Bobby Womack at his best. Get Womack's greatest hits album to hear his brilliant navigation from Otis Reading influenced R & B to funky Sly and The Family stone tinged disco. Bobby's a top pick for me ! ! !

    Spanish Harlem Orchestra has only been performing together since the year 2000, but this baker's dozen of musicians and vocalists swings as if it's been around for decades. That cohesiveness is at full-throttle on Across 110th St, SHO's second release and the follow-up to 2002's Grammy nominated Un Gran Dia en el Barrio. The group mixes classic salsa covers ("Cuando Te Vea, Esperame en el Cielo") with original compositions, and it makes for an unbroken flow of precise musicianship and sweltering instrumental interludes. The legendary Ruben Blades tackles singing duties on four tracks, which gives Across 110th St much of its commercial heft. Equally commendable, though, are the vocal stylings of regular SHO members Ray De La Paz, Marco Bermudez and Willie Torres. Everyone gets a chance to shine on Across 110th St--a very good thing for fans of great salsa music. --Joey Guerra

    Rey, this is the one you'll need to start Diego and Pablo on the path to fine NY salsa. Maestro Rubén Blades starts your Saturday morning with a sound reminder of how much El Barrio means to its denizens: Un Gran Día en El Barrio. North of 110th West or East, you choose, the effect will be the same: alegría, comida y mucho meneo. Nothing surprising or new to you lovers of Cuban music other than a street polished urban side to the Son. You can close your eyes and see the turned palms of La Palma Real, el arcoiris of push cart of piraguas, raspado or rasco rasco, or hear el guaguancó in neighborhood parks or Sundays at Orchard Beach. The CD is a notable example of what we in New York came to understand Cuban music to be. Since Buena Vista, we have arrived at a deeper understanding of styles and complex rhythmic patterns. Like the previous outing, leader Oscar Hernández takes us across town to sample New York Salsa; faithful to Cuban rumba and New York's polished bands. There are plenty of rhythms and lead vocals to enjoy a mini tour of great salsa. A great CD to be placed alongside the best sounds arriving from Puerto Rico, Cuba, Venezuela and Colombia.

    Many new bands today have taken the "big band" out of salsa today. However the "big band sound" in addition to the percussion, is what makes Salsa so exciting. This exciting release from the exellent SHO features tight arrangements, reminiscent of the 50's mambo bands, with a touch of modern, featuring some great jazz solos too. Exciting and fun to salsa dance to, or listen to!!! Great CD!!!

    Al ver que Ruben Blades estaría en este disco, aunque "se retiro", fue algo bueno, o asi pensaba yo. En solo algunas canciones interpreta él, pero no en todas. Está bien que quiera lanzar otras carreras artisticas, pero si los "reviews" profesionales dicen que el canta en todo el disco, eso solo es mala mercadotecnía, y saben que el disco no vendería si el no aparecia en las canciones. Ya que ésta orquestra es conocida, debería tener sus propias melodias y ocacionalmente tocar una pieza que otro artista ya haya presentado.

              This compilation does not contain titles of real hit movies. It contains mostly sentimental or comic songs from old movies and even from the ones I managed to recognise only a handful were original. It struck me hard to find "Enae Volare" from "Les Visiteurs", the only title I ordered this compilation for, terribly altered but that might concern me alone. Finding "What a Feeling" from "Flashdance" similarly altered made me wonder... later, on the back of the box, I found a small note saying, as I could decrypt from French, that the songs in the album were not necessary original. I should've been warned about this in advance!
