5 out of 5 stars A fun discovery.......2007-07-27

I heard "I'm Not Calling in Sick, I"m Calling in Gone" on Radio Margaritaville, and I was hooked! Bought Wahine Man and loved it, then just had to backtrack and get This Ain't Duval Street. Talented, fun, lively...definitely Caribbean soul ala Jimmy Buffett. Boat Drunks provide a great escape, especially when stuck in a So. California traffic jam. You just gotta smile! Where do I go to join the party??? I can hardly wait for the next CD!

4 out of 5 stars Some life changing lyrics.......2007-05-15

Listen to the words to "Hollow Man" & "I'm not calling in Sick...I'm calling in gone" Could anyone say it better?

5 out of 5 stars What a blast!.......2007-03-09

I first heard the Boat Drunks on Radio Margarittaville late last year. This album is terrific. They've captured some of J.B.'s magic and can take you on a short getaway to the Carribbean while you listen to their music.

4 out of 5 stars Trop rock band expands its sound!.......2006-12-30

The Boat Drunks' "Wahine Man" is a fiery collection of originals that expand upon the band's musical chops and songwriting subjects. The album is littered with a carefree, Jimmy Buffett-style Take the Weather With You outlook that tackles weighty life issues with a drink in one hand and golden hooks coming from the other hand. Expertly, the Drunks put Buffett's sense of humor to good use by confronting important issues such as how to make the perfect margarita ("Tangy Margaritas") and how to take life with a grain of salt and enjoy every moment ("Wind it Up").

Other tunes on "Wahine Man" revel in the joy of one-night stands ("Torrid Affair"), hilariously demonstrate human fortitude by singing about the perils of attending church on Sunday after a night of debauchery ("Hypo-Christian", written by Jake Tatar and Andy Gaines) and poke fun at washed-up musicians ("Big in Japan").

Though the Boat Drunks' endearing trop-rock sound permeates many of the songs on "Wahine Man," the band cranked out a few country rockers, some genuine rock-and-roll tunes and even delved into swing blues a bit. Two of the tracks -- "A Pirate on the Caribbean" and the crowd favorite, "Hollow Man" -- are revamped versions from the Boat Drunks' previous album, "This Ain't Duval Street." The addition of a saxaphone player to the Drunks' lineup, as well as contributions from several outside musicians, enhance the reworked songs on this CD.

Guest musicians on "Wahine Man" include Doyle Grisham, steel guitar player for Buffett's Coral Reefer Band, Billy Payne and Paul Barrere from Little Feat and Quincy Yates from the trop-rock band St. Elsewhere out of Knoxville, Tennessee.

All in all, "Wahine Man" is a fun CD by a group of solid musicians who love what they do on stage and in the recording studio.

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2006-09-07

This fine band has friends from another awesome band Little Feat. These guys will have you dancing till the cows come home from their nightly walks and what not. They're a great escape from reality and they just echo fun through and through, but don't take my word for it, check-em out yourself

4 out of 5 stars Favorite Bond Film.......2007-04-26

Music score was great. Paul McCartney and Wings. Movie well fitted for Roger Moore, a great candidate for this role.
The Solitaire melody is dreamy and romantic and often moody.
"Bond Goes to New York' is sharp yet out-witted. "Live and Let Die", a sacrament to testimony. Too good to pass up.

5 out of 5 stars Finally! The complete Live and Let Die Soundtrack.......2005-09-13

I have only been waiting for this for 22 years! Granted when this was first released on LP (Vinyl record technology, pre cd, pre cassette and during the horror period of 8 track tapes!),
Only so much music could be recorded on a record. This album finally satisfies all of us who wanted all of the music. Sir George Martin does a wonderful variation to the classic 007 theme as well as great action sequences with different variations of the main title and then some original songs. Sir Martin was the first to score for Bond since Barry who had scored all of the previous movies unavailable for this one. The music was a fabulous introduction to the new Bond Roger Moore.
This Album will stand the test of time when good music was being made for the series.

5 out of 5 stars Best Sound Track Ever.......2005-03-20

I just love bond movies and being able to listen to the music from them is just ausome

5 out of 5 stars Live and Let Delight.......2004-08-12

The remastered release of LIVE AND LET DIE is much improved. The previous issue was no different than the track line up on the original 1973 vinyl record -- or eight track tape, depending on your antiquated stereo. Not only does this release include additional superb tracks, some of the original cuts have also been lengthened and more closely correspond the the film soundtrack. George Martin, the Beatles producer, took the helm from John Barry in scoring the eighth James Bond film soundtrack. Though no one has yet equaled Barry's compositions for Bond films, which we have not heard since 1987's THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS, Martin's soundtrack was perfect for launching Roger Moore's first outing as Bond. Let us not forget Paul McCartney's brilliant theme of the same name.

The musical chemistry between McCartney and Martin is obvious as the title theme music is blended throughout the soundtrack. As a matter of trivia the movie producers originally planned to use McCartney's title theme with a female vocalist before the former Beatle showed his mettle as a negotiator. In the end, Paul McCartney and Wings performed the title track. LIVE AND LET DIE also proved to be a hit Apple/Capitol single as well.

There are a couple things missing from the CD. When some of the James Bond soundtracks were re-released a couple years ago they included selected soundbytes and an analog movie trailer. Apparently the remastered LIVE AND LET DIE soundtrack did not rate these extra features.

Oh well, Live and Let Die. In the meantime, live and go buy.

3 out of 5 stars Why weren't these tracks included in the first place?.......2003-04-16

Yes, that is my sentiment....in fact, it seems in all the other re-mastered Bond soundtracks, the best music is left out, and Live and Let Die was no exception.

George Martin took over from John Barry to write the score for Live and Let Die and he more than admirably did the job. First of all, (take note David Anrold), is that he incorporate the theme song into the score even though it wasn't written by him...thus continuing the tradition of Bond music set by John Barry. Second, he wrote another piece for Solitaire which is also used extensively throughout the score. In all, George Martin wrote a score worthy of Barry himself....

Which is what makes the original release such a disappointment because many of the best music was left out. The re-master remedied that and includes virtually the entire score: the music for the pre-title sequence (gun barrel/snakebit), other notables are Bond and Rosie, The Lovers, Bond to New York, and many of the cues for action/chase sequences. There is an alternate cue for San Monique which I think is better than the one on the original release.

But why the 3 stars rating?
We have to wait for Bond's 40th anniversary for the soundtrack's proper release, AND rebuy the soundtrack (I have it in cassette and CD and now the Re-master). Call me bitter, I think the people who runs the Bond empire should stop treating us fans so shabbily.

    5 out of 5 stars ok........2006-07-11

i dont write reviews...but i had to for the furnaces. i just don't understand some of the negative reviews for this cd. honestly...maybe it's a little too inventive for it's time, if that makes any sense. the furnaces wrote these songs with no boundaries in mind, and no specific style of music to write the songs to. that's really what's wrong with the state of music. it has to fit into a specific category so people will know what to expect...so now, when something like this comes along, it's instant crap. people need to ask "who do they sound like?" or "what type of music is it?" you need to go into listening to this cd with the mindset that it is not supposed to fit into any specific category, or genre if you will. it's the furnaces making an inventive, creative, out of this world album that's fun to listen to and is completely unpredictable, and that's all. don't criticize that's it's not rock and roll, because it's not supposed to be. nobody said it was supposed to be. don't criticize that they don't write good melody's...because that's not true. and don't get me started on the lyrics....overwritten? if they had underwritten them people would criticize that they were too plain, too ordinary...and so they go out on a limb and write amazing miniature stories...and it's too overwritten. give me a break

4 out of 5 stars Somewhere Between Absolute Bliss and a Trainwreck.......2006-05-08

Five plus stars for vision and 3.5 stars for execution=4.25 stars

Who knew there was a band in the underground that could generate this much fervent opinion both pro and con? Seems either you hate _Blueberry Boat_ or love it. Myself, I lean very heavily towards the latter. Yes, this album could effectively be cut down by thirty minutes or so. Sure, Mr. Friedberger is probably a little too enamored of making noises on the sundry instruments he plays. And okay, the Furnaces' albums sound claustrophobic, almost "incestuous," cloistered, the sound of two twenty-something siblings with way too much time on their hands.

And all of these shortcomings add to the equation of why you should love what is shaping up to be the most ambitious indie unit of the decade.

I've wanted to review this album ever since I got it some months ago (the night I saw them live; now the live experience, THAT is something different altogether, electric, loud, brash--PLEASE put out a live album ASAP, Friedbergers). I wanted to wait 'til I "got it." Now I know that will never happen. I wanted to put together the snippets of narratives here, the shifting foci of my annoyance and ecstasy every time I listen to this album, etc. . . . Then I realized, like most of my favorite works of art, I will never put my head all the way around this one. Think _Ulysses_ or _Finnegans Wake_ by James Joyce. Could he have cut these works down by several hundreds of pages? Most certainly. Would they be the same works if it would have been easier to identify their narrative arcs, if he would have compacted them, if he wouldn't've resorted to masturbatory techniques. No, sir/ma'am; in the end, these excessive urges (ESPECIALLY the masturbation) is a large part of what Joyce's works are all about.

And in the midst of all this sprawl, Joyce managed to capture an infinite expanse of what the human condition is all "about." (Everything and nothing all at once.) And so do the Fiery Furnaces!!! Disjointed narratives about losing one's dog; wandering around Mason City, IA (it's very much in the middle of nowhere, BTW); sing-songy songs about belatedness . . . skronky guitar runs, synthesizer vamps and arpeggios, Casio drum machine, found-sound effects . . . the catalog goes on and on and you never figure out exactly what this Blueberry Boat odyssey means, exactly.

But you can pinpoint some references. Sgt. Pepper and the Magical Mystery Tour are most certainly along on this boat ride. A really convoluted version of punk is here (most certainly not the least of which is the fierce and unrelenting DIY spirit that I'm overjoyed to say that the Friedberger's will almost certainly never lose). Classic 70's rock is here (again, in exquisitely contorted form). Want an even messier concept album than _Tommy_ or ELP's _Tarkus_? Here it is. Want a musician capable of virtuosity AND squalid/weird noise a la Robert Fripp? Well, Matthew Friedberger one-ups King Crimson's ace a few notches and makes himself a freaky virtuoso on both guitar AND keyboards. Oh, and know what makes them different than all these "dinosaurs," as you indie-rock snobs so self-righteously put it? They don't take themselves seriously at all (unlike you indie-rock snobs, who likely don't want to get the Furnaces in the first place)! Song #4, "Chris Michaels" starts out with Jenny singing the delightfully gauche lyric, "Later at lunch, with the taco lettuce crunch . . ." She even puts a rolling "r" on the "crunch" in that line. Besides playing with instrument sounds, these two are also masters at playing with vowels, consonants, and mouth noises that don't even have typographical symbols. Cheesy sometimes? Hell yeah! Even vaudevillian!!! This puts them in a lineage of the creme de la creme of rock and roll who know that the best attitude is sometimes just to say, "Ah, what the f**k! Let's just rock . . . f**k the critics, f**k the audience. We'll get our love by being our own gloriously weird selves. (I'm going to add the Furnaces to a list of exalted weirdos I am starting here: Beach Boys, Beatles, Hendrix, the Who, Zappa, Captain Beefheart, NY Dolls, ELP, the Stooges, the Pistols, Wire, Flaming Lips . . . wow, this list goes on and on: AND ALL THE BANDS ARE GREAT!)

So I'm not giving this five stars. Like it says at the top, they are five plus stars for vision and spirit, but 3.5 for execution. Well, _Bitter Tea_ just came out and they have upped the ante (give me a few months to digest that one a little and I will come down from the mountain and share my opinion on that one with you, as well). They need more musicians on their albums, an actual band. They need to perfect the fine arts of editing and studio engineering. Still, I think you have to admit that it's better to have adventurous young folks like the Friedbergers figuring these arts out for themselves rather than having some execs pushing them as the next emo sensation or some s**t. Mark my words. Give this album many close listens and many more not-so-close listens besides (minimum grand total of fifteen--it's that dense). Then, get back to me and tell me that you don't hear one of the most impressive indie bands of the decade. And then I'll laugh at you. We'll look back at the avant-de-siecle of this decade and mention these guys along with a handful of other true indie pioneers like Deerhoof and (used-to-be-indie) Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and whomever else comes along in the next four years. The great news is that the Friedbergers are still very young and have many five-star albums in them yet. _Blueberry Boat_ is definitely the start of something incredible.

5 out of 5 stars An Esoteric Masterpiece.......2006-02-08

FF _Blueberry Boat_ is a 70minute excursion that is at times difficult and obnoxious, but is always rombunctous and playful. Something so uniquely creative deserves to be experienced by only those who are themselves creative. Listening to this record is like embarking upon a magical journey, that may leave fans of traditional rock or fans of coloring in the lines in the dust, but will reward the hardened artist for his time. Most notable are the multilayered synths, guitars, and vocals implemented to carve an original sound - by all of two people! Utilizing varying instrumentation effectively in a duo, and furnishing a sound like a quintet or sextet is simply remarkable! In conclusion _Blueberry Boat_ is a nostalgic journey for those who dreamt as children about flying to other planets and frolicing with friendly alienfolk. This cd is way ahead of its time, witty, creative, and just may take you to another planet to meet everything and everyone that is...FF!!

    1 out of 5 stars Absolute Junk.......2006-01-14

I saw the FIERY FURNACES open up for WILCO last year at Radio City Music Hall, NY last year. A high school talent show would have been more entertaining. Absolute noodling rubbish. The sounded like bad seventies GENESIS, heavy metal, and SUN RA all combined. Oh yeah, the sound sucked too. I understand pushing the boundaries and experimenting but, come on. A hint of melody might be a thought. The only thing going for them is the very beautiful singer.

Opening with Clara Rockmore's reworking of Tchaikovsky with the theremin, and finishing with one of Brian Eno's ambient soundscapes, OHM artfully succeeds in its goal of giving a representative (as opposed to the impossible, comprehensive) overview of the first several decades of electronic music. Over 3 discs, 42 compositions, and 96 pages of notes and photos, OHM clearly illustrates the producers' and contributing writers' point that early electronic music is much of the foundation of contemporary music. Herein lies the connective tissue bridging musique concrète, 20th-century classical, electronic experimentation, and the theoretical avant-garde to psychedelia, ambient, dub, techno, electro, and synthpop and the globalization of sound. The groundbreaking uses of loops, sampling, drones, remixes, and cut-and-paste technology are put fully into context. The diversity of music included makes any sort of summation impossible, but that is also the point: electronic music is not really a genre, but an open field of endless possibility. From John Cage's famous "William's Mix" of tape snippets to Karkheinz Stockhausen's electronic orchestral compositions, from David Tudor and Holger Czukay's experiments in unrelated blendings of audio elements to David Behrman's supremely peaceful duet between computers and musicians, the aural renegades on OHM tread where none (save a few of their contemporaries) had gone before. The liner notes convey the incredible amount of hard work and experimentation it took to stitch together many of these pieces in the predigital era. Putting aside the inevitable quibbles about what's missing (much of it due to legal and/or logistical issues), a more complete collection of musical eggheads, eccentrics, and visionaries is hard to imagine. --Carl Hanni

4 out of 5 stars excellent but uncomplete.......2006-11-12

Althought most of the music here is an excellent collection of electronic music history, this 3 CDs lack of the important contribution given by the RAI phonology studios of Milan, Italy in the 50s
(which was bigger than Koln's WDR studios) with Bruno Maderna, Luciano Berio and Luigi Nono.
This is a big mistake. Milans studios were the biggest of europe and produced many important electroacoustic pieces.
If the collection aim to describe faithfully electronic music history, it should include this artists too.

4 out of 5 stars To call it music may be a bit limiting. .......2006-10-24

Some of the tracks on here are "music". That is that they contain all the bits we're trained to experience as music -- melody, etc. Some are not, and the composers would be the first people to tell you that. A lot of these works are reactions to ingrained rules, so they're bound to be jarring.

A more successful way to approach such a broad and varied collection of audio experimentation is to think of it as curated sound. This isn't something to wash the dishes to, or to seduce someone to (although if you did manage to seduce someone with the recordings on this anthology, HOLD ON TO THAT PERSON, because they've got to be a keeper). These are unique sound textures that deserve a close, probably solitary listen, and I think if you're in the right frame of mind, it can be a very rewarding listen.

My main complaint is sequencing: each dicrete piece follows it's own internal logic, so there are more than a couple rough gear changes. However, since each piece is so different, and the collection is so varied, I'm not sure that you could totally escape that.

    4 out of 5 stars A worthwhile collection.......2006-01-11

The OHM collection contains some of those ground breaking electronic compositions that have shaped today's styles, from the early electronic instruments of Theremin and Martenot, through Pierre Schaeffer's Music Concrete tape music and the electronic music of Stockhausen and Subotnick, to the mainframe computer output of Risset and Chowning.

It is unfair to mark this collection down due to the production quality and 'musicality' of its contents, to do so would be to staggeringly miss the point of the development of electronic music through the 20th Century. What this collection shows is the ideas behind those at the cutting edge of the genre before many could even conceive of such output. That said it is hard going at points, as experimental music can be.

Highlights for me are no doubt Olivier Messiaen's 'Oraison' on CD 1, David Tudor's 'Rainforest Version 1' on CD 2 and on CD 3 David Behrman's 'On the Other Ocean' and Maryanne Amacher's 'Living sound Patent Pending'.

    1 out of 5 stars OhMyGodHowDreadful.......2005-08-15

Ok, this collection is supposed to be early works and, thus not expected to be very sophisticated or polished. But the OHM collection sounds like the first attempt of a spastic cat turned-loose on a Moog keyboard. When it is not boreing, this collection of random and dissonant sounds (I can't call it music) is without any redeeming qualities to make it worth while. Don't get me wrong, I am a long-time fan of Wendy (nie Walter) Carlos and some other real pioneers of electronic music. However, I find that the Ohm collection has no similar qualities and is a major disappointment.

    5 out of 5 stars Kid Stockhausen.......2003-01-17

This is required listening for anybody interested in the history of electronic music. Although implicitly aiming for the techno music audience, this audio history is overwhelmingly focused on the classical avant-garde of electro-acoustic composers. The closest you'll get to pop electronica is the Brian Eno track at the end of the third disc. No Kraftwerk, no Moroder, etc. Instead "OHM" manages to point to the continuities between, say, John Cage and artists currently working at the experimental edges of electronica (so-called IDM). It seems to be saying, "You think Kid 606 is visionary? Well check out this Stockhausen track from '59!"

Admittedly, some of the songs are much more interesting to think about than they are to listen to. Some of the early pieces that were made through thosuands of hours of pains-taking tape-splicing could be made today in an afternoon with a digital audio editor and a few effects plug-ins.

It is a beautiful package, containing a 90 page booklet of essays, quotations from the featured artists, and photographs. What all music should be: an education in daring.

3 out of 5 stars These are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks.......2007-01-21

I was disappointed that these are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks. For example, in Colonel Bogey, the countermarch from the movie soundtrack is not included in the arrangement on this CD. Don't get me wrong, the songs are good, but I would have preferred the same arrangements as the original movies.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding compilation.......2006-08-25

This compilation is superb and a real must-buy. From Band of Brothers to A Bridge Too Far: every war movie theme is represented here. An all time classic.

3 out of 5 stars The really good ones are missing........2005-07-18

While this compilation has some masterpieces such as the theme from The Great Escape and Is Paris Burning, it's missing some of the finest tracts ever written. Where is the theme from Victory and Ernest Gold's stirring epic from Cross of Iron? The closing theme from Inchon was also a feast for the ears, but it's not here. It was written by Jerry Goldsmith, one of the foremost soundtrack composers of our time. Instead we're subjected to the likes of Hanover Street and The English Patient. I'll admit Inchon and Victory weren't Academy Award winning movies, but their soundtracks were second to none. As John Stossel would say," Give me a break"!!!

A HEARTBEAT. A HEARTBEAT CEASES. EVERYTHING INBETWEEN.

GO TO SLEEP PRECEDES LET ME WELCOME YOU TO THIS WORLD. AND, YES, THERE'LL BE DAY AND NIGHT.

A WILD BRIDE LIVES, OWNING HER SEXUALITY.

    PREDATORS ABOUND.

IN SPITE OF IT, WE FIND HER ALLOWING BIRTH AND THE THUNDER INSIDE OF HER. CAN SHE TEAR BACK THE VEILS THAT ARE HERE? YES. SHE DOES.

LAYING DOWN HER PAIN BECAUSE SOMETIMES HAVING YOU HERE FEELS GOOD, YET IT'S THE FEAR THAT IS SO REAL.

AND THEN IT'S TIME TO SAY GOODBYE. GOODBYE TO ALL THE THINGS WE'VE SAID AND CRIED.

LASTLY, THE LOVE SHE COULDN'T SAY, BUT SHE WANTS TO SAY IT NOW.

I do not want to say goodbye to this album, so I have not. I have played it often for over ten years now. These are sentiments that no one can bid farewell to. . .and in spite of life's pain and sugarsickness, who would want to?

1 out of 5 stars Not her best.......2006-03-21

This was probably her most overlooked album, and for good reason. It's clearly not her best. I got it when it first came out, without listening to it, didn't like it, got rid of it, then saw it again years later in a store for .99, gave it another try, and realized why I got rid of it. It can't hold a candle to the brilliance of Union or House Of Hope.

1 out of 5 stars Toni hits the wall.......2005-05-28

Toni Childs' first release, Union, was a breath of fresh air in an era when so much of mainstream women's rock was just all the same (how many Mariah Carries does one really need, after all). Toni's deep and resonant voice came crashing through with sensitivity, power, and heat.
Her sophomore effort, house of hope, was one in which the walls started to get rickity. Not the same power or sensitivity, but still some good stuff.
This was the only one of her three major releases I simply threw away. It simply makes you want to pray for Toni's healing, not for another release. It turns out, this appears to have been her last.

4 out of 5 stars Great Album - some serious stuff.......2005-01-08

First off, I've bought ALL of Tonis other albums. This one took me three listenings to really get to like it. When I found out that it was about a child being born and how her life progressed, I found the work all the more interesting. Some of the songs really stick in your mind. If you see the Album as a story (of a girls life) it makes the Album much more interesting than just listening to the album song by song.

Pink Floyd used to do this, have an album which was a theme or story, like The Wall album.

I took the CD out of my colection after not listening to it for about 5 months, and have been playing it in my car on the way to work and home for over a week now.
It's GREAT. And I'm not a female by the way.

Nice ALbum. If you like Tonis other works,.....GET IT.

3 out of 5 stars An Acquired Taste.......2004-09-09

A friend in San Diego introduced me to this CD several years ago and at the time I was impressed by it. Last year, I saw it in the used CD section at my favorite Encinitas record store and picked it up after remembering my first impression.
When I got it home, I put it on, listened to it, then put it on the shelf wondering what had ever possessed me to buy it. It might have gathered a thick coat of dust if I hadn't decided to take it on a long trip and give it another chance.
On the trip, I let it play through half a dozen times and gained a new appreciation for it. While there are parts, like the children's chorus and the squalling baby, that I still dislike there is much here to enjoy. My favorites here are the growling Predator, Wild Bride, and Sacrifice.
I am not familiar with Childs' other works, so I have no point of comparison to make with them. But I can tell the new listener that Childs delivers her songs with passion. Though her music is definitely an acquired taste, I have heard enough here to make me want to hear more.

      Album Description

"Tinkling bells, straight-ahead acoustic guitar, and wobbly theremin [are] joined by elegantly skewed feedback and a subtle drum build-up ... the future doesn't really have to be so bleak. At least not for the next three minutes." -- Pitchfork BOAT is back with their second LP, Let's Drag Our Feet! Recorded in a basement in Seattle, the trio has improved upon the lo-fi sound of their debut. This time out, each song is an anthem. Slightly fuzzy vocals collide with simple guitar lines, start-stop drumming, handclaps, la las, ba bas, ooh oohs, slippery theremin, some eight-bit Nintendo keyboard sounds, electronic kazoo, double trumpet, and enough energy to make you play air drums and shout out lyrics in the car, office, deli, or wherever you spend your days.

      4 out of 5 stars unknown treasure.......2006-05-29

I enjoyed Jonathan Edwards earlier work with "sunshine", "everybody knows her" and "stop and start again" all of which received some radio exposure. I purchased this album unheard in 1977 based on the previous work. I was quite pleased on the first play.

Through the years i would dub "blow on chilly wind", "let the rough side drag" and my favorite "carolina caroline" to cassette and distribute them to my friends for their listening pleasure. Everybody enjoyed the music.

I was sorry to note that the album was deteriorating over the years and held no hope the music would make it to cd since it was hardly a chartbuster. I occasionally do a search on amazon for music that i hope might be available on cd and was thrilled to see this music available again. The quality is just fine and without the hiss and ticks of the lp.

I would suggest that if you enjoy what has been termed California AOR you acquire this piece. It's not going to jump out and grab you but if you find yourself sitting on a balcony overlooking the gulf with the breeze in your hair and the sound of waves breaking in the background this is a dandy cd to just veg out to.

5 out of 5 stars Super fine mid-60s bubblegum sunshine pop.......2005-10-26

This quintet is typically dismissed as a prototypical one-hit wonder, with "Come on Down to My Boat" being their sole top-10 chart entry. Formed in the waning shadows of New York City's folk scene, the group quickly found direction from writer-producer Wes Farrell. Farrell had previously found success with Jay and The Americans ("Come a Little Bit Closer") and The McCoys ("Hang on Sloopy"), as well as having recorded a garage-styled version of "Boat" with Rare Breed (not The American Breed, as this collection's liner notes suggest). The band's remake of this latter tune, with tidy harmonies, a rolling drum line and a cleaner organ riff turned the frat rocker into an indelible bubblegum hit.

The follow-up debut LP for MGM found the group forsaking the songsmithing of Farrell for their own work. Unusually, their songs are nearly as catchy as the hit. The band's lead singing brothers, Dennis and Lary Larden, turned out to have considerable talent for writing melodic bubblegum songs in the Boyce & Hart vein (particularly the should've-been-a-hit "Allison Dozer"), and Farrell arranged the tracks well, playing the brothers voices against each other in both harmony and counterpoint. The influence of The Lovin' Spoonful is evident in the jug-band tune "Sittin' Here (Peter's Tune)," and the intertwined vocal arrangements often bring to mind The Left Banke.

Collectables' CD includes the eleven tracks of the group's debut album, plus three post-"Boat" follow-up singles. What's missing is the bulk of the group's second album ("Every Mother's Sons' Back"), which would easily fit on here as a two-fer. The transfer is clean, but the drums (perhaps due to the original production) aren't as distinct as other pop hits of the era. True stereo tapes were used throughout, with the exception of "No One Knows." Packaging is the typical Collectables' two-panel liner notes with no additional photos; a particular shame here, since the original LP had Sixteen Magazine styled biographies of each band member and a wonderful color band photo on the inside of the gatefold cover. 4 out of 5 stars At Last!.......2004-12-09

These boys had it all -- great vocals, interesting guitar parts, some impressive original songs...everything, that is, except timing & a good producer (Wes Farrell always made the drums sound like cardboard boxes). If only they 'd made the scene a year or two earlier it might have been a whole different deal -- I'd even rate 'em over fellow New Yorkers the Lovin' Spoonful -- but alas, 1967-68 was not the time for nice clean cut boys wearing cable-knit sweaters playing pop songs.

I agree that cherry picking the best from their two Lp's would have been preferable, i.e.:

      Rain Flowers
      I Won't
Put Your Mind at Ease (killer late era Beach Boys-ish tune, if you can get past the out of tune guitar intro)
      For Brandy
      Didn't She Lie
      Sally
      Another Day Another Song
      What Became of Mary
I'd Rather Be Right Than Wrong
      I May Be Right
Proper Four Leaf Clover (another undiscovered gem, from Bruce Milner, with a great punch line...I intend to cover this one day)
      Ain't It A Drag
      Only Child
Allison Dozer (does Ray Davies know about this one? <g>)
      Ain't No Use
& of course the ubiquitous Come & Take A Ride in My Boat

...but it's good to have anything available by these guys on CD, so I suppose we shouldn't complain.

If anyone knows what happened to these guys (I do know Dennis Larden later joined Rick Nelson's Stone Canyon Band, & has the dubious honor of having contributed to Keith Moon's solo album; & Bruce Milner is a NYC dentist!), including any of the guys from the band, please feel free to contact me through my website: http://www.buddywoodward.net.

Meanwhile, see if you can dig up a copy of "Every Mothers Son's Back," & happy listening!

      3 out of 5 stars Good Reissue.......1999-10-07

This is a nice Re-Release of thier first MGM album, glad to have it now on CD! The original stereo album was mastered "flat" with no bass at all, this CD was a big improvement in sound quality.

My only gripe is there was plenty of room on the CD to add the band's second (and better IMO) album, "EVERY MOTHERS SON-BACK". Instead we get two of the weaker songs from that album plus a OK non-album cut.

5 out of 5 stars "Come On Down To My Boat" - A Classic Pop Song.......1999-08-09

"Come On Down To My Boat" is one of the 60's classic pop songs. Unavailable here in Australia (and virtually unheard of). Listen to the opening bass lines. Thank God! for the InterNet!

5 out of 5 stars This is the Every Mother`s Son at there absolute BEST.......1999-07-12
