A Must for any Heavy Metal fan-- esp Doom.......2007-07-13

If you are into epic Doom metal-- this is a great CD. I am a Black Sabbath, Judas Priest , Iron Maiden, Scorpions fan-- and I like Trouble, Candlemass and the first Solitude Aeturnus CD. These guys are unique-- they use great powerful Sabbath- like riffs, with mostly clean vocals, great arrangements, very melodic, use of keyboards and the violin. Its classic epic doom at its very best ! The lyrics aren't exactly to my taste, but the emotional impact of the music is what doom is about-- and this is a great CD. Their latest "A line Of Deathless Kings" is worth getting-- but its not as good as this one from 1993..
Every serious doom metal fan-- indeed heavy metal fan-- should own this CD. I have been following metal since Sabbath in 1970-- and this CD is a must.
Buy it-- the four additional songs added to the original set are good, and one is a great live version.
One should note that the band develops the songs slowly and they are usually 8-10 minutes in length.
Get it-- you won't be disappointed-- Jay Edwards

Eerie melodic doom metal form beyond the grave.......2005-10-25

I am not a huge My Dying Bride fan, or atleast to the degree most people would consider. The only album I've had before this one was "Songs of Darkness, Words of Light," and I heard a good deal of the songs off of both "Like Gods of the Sun," and "The Dreadful Hours." I saw this used, so I bought it.

It was not quite as I expected. The opening track "Sear Me mcmxc III" is slow and layered with violins and an organ in the background. I know doom metal is slow, but this is agonizingly slow. Its like being dragged across a bed of nails. Now some may think this is bad. I loved it. Its so heavy, and weighs down on you. It gives you an eerie feel, a feeling I had yet to feel when listening to a metal album, or any album for that matter.

The heavy guitars don't pick up untill about a quarter way through the second track, "Your River." It still remains slow and miserable (in a good way, of course). The stand out quality of My Dying Bride is the ability for the singer to equal his death growls (as in the song "Turn Loose The Swans") and clean, yet frightening vocals. This is taken to almost perfection in Turn Loose the Swans. THere is a perfect balance. I am not a scream metal person. I was never into the whole death metal scene. My Dying Bride, however, has made screaming and growling enjoyable. This is along the same lines of Opeth, another spectacular band of similar nature.

Almost every track on this album stands out. My personal favorites are "Sear Me mcmxc III," "Your River," and "Black God." Although every track is enjoyable, I wouldn't skip a track on it. The three extra tracks are enjoyable. "Le Cerf Malade" is a haunting instrumental track. Although drawn out and repetetive, I did not mind. It added a lot to the album, even if not intended to be on it. "Transcending (Into The Exquisite)" is an interesting track. Its a lot faster than you'd expect from My Dying Bride, and almost sounds to have industrial elements in some areas. MYB is always surprising, I suppose. The final track, "Your Shameful Heaven," is a live track. Unlike most live tracks, its devoid of the common annoyances, mainly an unruley audience, as well as a distortion in sound.

In short, if you are an MYB fan, pick this up, you won't regret it. Even if you are not, and are merely trying to expand your metal tastes (which you should), check this album out.

LOVE IN ANY LANGUAGE.......2006-12-26

I bought this CD for the song "Love Is Spoken Here" which was sung at my father's funeral, to celebrate his life and love of music, especially Church music. Our soloist was a friend whose voice warmed our breaking hearts. But when I saw that I could also get the Mormon Tabernacle Choir version along with many other beautiful American songs, I ordered this. I highly recommend MTC if you are seeking choir music to lift your spirit.

Joel Cohen spent countless days in the library at the Shaker community at Sabbathday Lake, Maine, transcribing dozens of tunes from among thousands of archived chants and spirituals. My interest in seeking Shaker music was professional - I wanted something to use for my church choir's next big performance. What I found in this collection of Shaker music was that, but much more.

Without their music, the Shakers can seem quaint and faintly silly - the odd maiden aunts and uncles with peculiar hobbies (making chairs and living without modern conveniences) and -- nutty bears, indeed! -- living in celibate, and therefore non-regenerative communities.

But their music is something else --earnest, longing, full of commitment and a sense of their own story. And tuneful! You don't have to be a Shaker to appreciate the visual poetry of "Virgins cloth'd in a clean white garment," or hear the deep commitment to resist sin in "I will fight, fight, and never slack until I overcome the enemy," or the desperate longing for eternal life evoked by "In yonder valley there flows sweet union." These are songs written for and performed by people who lived a most austere form of spirituality.

There are those who criticize Joel Cohen for having embellished some pieces by adding, for instance, a drone that is not attested in the literature. By I certainly praise Cohen and the Boston Camarata for having brought these wonderful pieces to my attention. It is icing on the cake that a few of the remaining Shakers of the Sabbathday Lake, Maine community chose to join their voices to this effort. To sing is to pray twice, and this CD certainly delivers on that promise, plus providing insights into an obscure but enduring corner of the American religious landscape.

And then there were four..........2006-10-25

Only four Shakers remain and Sabbathday Lake in Maine houses them all. They range in age from 43 to 80. Given this, without fresh converts the Shakers face extinction. Barred by law from adopting orphans (since 1960, religious groups cannot adopt, only individuals or couples can), the twentieth century saw a steep decline in their numbers. Thanks to religious revivals, back in the nineteenth century their numbers swelled to over 5,000. But by 1920 a mere dozen remained. Though the small community hopes, and continually prays, for new recruits - which must come in the form of consenting adults - their values clash with modern America. Which was, of course, the original point. The largest hurdle for membership: total celibacy. No procreation, nothing. And, as we all know, twenty-first century American culture is anything but celibate.

Shakers remain not only celibate, but ascetic. Though not to the level of the Amish or the Luddites. Sabbathday Lake has a website, a car, telephones, and internet connections. They also don't hermit themselves from society. They play an active role in it. So throw away any notions of Puritanical witch hunters. Shakers laugh, socialize, read, dance, and, as this CD aptly demonstrates, they sing their ascetic hearts out.

The music, largely resembling English folk music, rhapsodizes about Shaker values, history, and vows. All songs but one get performed a capella. Some emphasize the lyrics with stomping and clapping. Permeating the set is the figure of "Mother," or Ann Lee. She helped found the Shakers in the eighteenth century and all faithful remain her spiritual heir (after Jesus Christ, of course). Early followers faced persecution, but found faith in Mother's actions and example. The song, titled appropriately, "Mother" retells the story of the "blessed fire" that spread from Manchester, England to America. Believers also reaffirm their faith and actions by singing songs in Meeting. An apt beginning, the CDs first song presents an ecstatic chant that reminds members of their ominous vow: "Come life, Shaker life, Come life eternal, Shake, shake out of me all that is carnal." "Followers of the Lamb" repeats the lines "I'm glad I am a Shaker" three times in celebration. Some songs don't have words and get half hummed half sung with mystical sounds. Shakers also express anger. "A companion stiff" fiercely pounds away individualistic thoughts in favor of community. The beautiful and upbeat "Encouragement" combines non-word singing with strongly contrasting fervent stomping and clapping. Somehow it encapsulates both meditative contemplation and heart-racing ecstasy in only two and a half minutes. Aptly bookending the CD is the most famous Shaker song, "Simple gifts." Instantly recognizable, Aaron Copland popularized this tune in his 1950 ballet "Appalachian Spring." Here it receives a sparse but inspired choral performance. As such, it aptly closes the CD with a message of faith and simplicity.

This CD, recorded at Sabbathday Lake, preserves a sampling of the thousands of Shaker songs known to exist. To this day these songs still fill the Shaker's 1794 Meeting House, the last one still in use. But how much longer? In the end, whether or not the Shakers can survive their current troubles, they will always remain an important piece of American and religious history. Not that that provides much consolation. Either way, this recording helps to preserve an important aspect of the Shaker's cultural contribution: their impressive music.

A beautiful album .......2005-09-17

This is a gorgeous album of melodies so strong and simple that you could build bridges on them.
The issue of the theology is irrelevent unless you believe that differences in the theology expressed--which may be different from yours--will interfere with your pleasure in the music. I can easily imagine topics that, no matter how beautifully expressed, I would be unable to listen to. It wasn't the case with this CD.

(You would also be upset if you believe that (a) listening to others express their beliefs, which are different form yours, is a sin, (b) your faith will be swayed by listening to gorgeous music from people who disagree with you, or (c) it's wrong for people with different beliefs to have their music recorded. I doubt very much that any of the people who have expressed theological concerns about this CD would feel that way but, hey, people who do feel that way should be given appropriate warning).

Shaker Music -- misunderstood?.......2005-01-27

I read the reviews of this CD and feel some people are not understanding the lyrics. One cautioned that Shakers refer to God as "she." At first, I thought the same thing; however, after carefully listening to the music many times, I truly believe that when they refer to "she", they are solely referring to Mother Ann, the founder of their religion, whom they obviously adored and admired. This music is haunting and well-performed and should NOT be a "turn-off" to any Christian who chooses to listen.

Some new old ideas.......2000-10-14

I am a big fan of early American music, and Joel Cohen and the Boston Camerata really know how to do it. I found this album musically refreshing as well as spiritually refreshing. As a minister of music, I appreciate the sensitivity the Camerata brings to its interpretation of these traditional Shaker hymns. I also love hearing music by singers (specifially the Shakers themselves) who are not afraid to limit their understanding of who God is -- infinite and varied in nature, not subject to human limitations such as gender. There is a great freedom in this music which some listeners who are tired of the rigid confines of modern theology will appreciate. My only ambivalence is with the pieces on which the Shaker community takes a leading role. On the one hand, I think this is brilliant and enriching. On a purely auditory level, though, their untrained sound is a little distracting. Decide for yourself when you purchase this delightful album!

Catchy songs from a 70's play to help learn about the Plan through the eyes of a group of children, with the main focus on a girl named Barbara. Some of the songs get a bit cheezy but most of the time are simple, beautiful ways to express the purpose of life. More upbeat than Primary songs and more modern language than the Standard Works. It would be great if it came out on DVD, but until then the soundtrack is great to listen to as a family while doing activities together.

If you like adventurous music then this is an excellent pick, 75 minutes of interesting sound effects and rhythms. But, as is often the case, there are no liner notes which, especially when listening to composers with whom one is unfamiliar, cheapens the offering. Borrow it from a library or buy it second hand. Maybe Kronos will eventually get the message.

SHORT STORIES is an outstanding collection of new music. "Digital" by Elliot Sharp is all percussion, presumably produced with violin, viola and cello. "Spoonful," the great Willie Dixon song, is arranged for strings much like "Purple Haze" before it. "Spectre," by John Oswald, probably best known for his electronic manipulations of the Grateful Dead, is a piece that starts out inaudibly, and then all of a sudden gathers into what sounds like a UFO taking off! Cowell's "Quartet Euphometric" is a short, lovely piece, the most conventional on the album.

And that leaves the 5 longer pieces, each one masterful in its own right, and adding to an amazing overall effect: 1) John Zorn's "Cat O' Nine Tails," in which he applies his quick change methodology to the string quartet to hilarious effect, 2) Steven Mackey's "Physical Property" for electric guitar and quartet, with stunning rhythms and textures, 3) Scott Johnson's "Soliloquy" featuring a tape of I.F. Stone, the radical journalist, who questions the persistence of barbarism and tribalism, and asks, "...is it necessary to repeat after 2,000 years all the things you people learned in Sunday school?! How -- how absent-minded -- how forgetful!", 4) Sofia Gubaidulina's "Quartet No. 2", which is sinuous and splendid -- Kronos have done their part to put her before the public -- and 5) Pandit Pran Nath's "Aba Kee Tayk Hamaree," with the voice of the North Indian master, and his disciple Terry Riley on tamboura, a reverent way to close, and the first chance for myself and many others, I'm sure, to hear him.

Of the Kronos releases I've heard, SHORT STORIES is the furthest out, with the least reference to the early 20th century, and the greatest risk-taking vis a vis the classical music establishment. It works! Fantastic!

Short stories greater than life.......2001-01-24

This is one absolutely brilliant collection of compositions, from the beginning to the end of this CD, offering 75 minutes of music. It starts with a vivid and pulsating Digital, continues with Willie Dixon's Spoonful, transformed here into some sort of avant-garde blues (!?) performed with an intensity of Jimi Hendrix. Cat O' Nine Tails, appropriately subtitled as "Tex Avery Directs the Marquis de Sade", is a graphic performance, and with its humor, witty references and brief genre zip-zapping throughout the piece it's characteristic for John Zorn. Steven Mackey plays electric guitar with the Kronos Quartet in his own energetic and exiting piece, Physical Property.

Scott Johnson's 13 minutes long Soliloquy makes me think that I have an advantage in not being a native English speaker because the sense of music of the foreign language always remains (at least to me it does). The inherent music in one's own mother tongue with all its melody, rhythm and texture usually goes unnoticed. By using the short edited parts, or "loops", of I.F. Stone's lecture I feel Kronos does exactly that: brings out the music of the English language and accentuates it with their own instrumental backing. It's a functional and artistically justified method, I feel, justified by the beauty of the composition and the text itself.

One of the highlights of the CD is certainly Sofia Gubaidulina's Quartet No. 2. It brings a sense of eeriness and menace, maintaining the suspense, not unlike some of impressive and disturbing compositions of Krzysztof Penderecki. It would certainly quality as "musica non grata" to the totalitarian Soviet regime of the former USSR, Gubaidulina's country of birth.

John Oswald's Spectre is an experience for itself. It is, simply, one of the most amazing, intense and breathtaking compositions I have ever heard. Like Cat O'Nine Tails, Physical Property and Soliloquy, it was written for Kronos Quartet. It was meticulously recorded in numerous but seamless layers of overdubs and in that sense it was really written for a huge string orchestra of, say, thousand string instruments all of which played by Kronos. It starts with sounds of the quartet's tuning-in out of which one single note is sustained. It sounds fragile and shallow at first but soon after subtly gains strength and depth. As its timbre becomes richer and richer, one gradually becomes aware of numerous other tones that co-exist with the first one, thousands of them, almost the same, but not quite. They start to interact, bumping into each other. And then... the pitch gets slightly higher, the sound constantly gains power in a mighty spiral, a tornado of sound that sucks you in and throws you out. Like a soul leaving the body, as in some Castaneda's novel. This is how I imagine shooting heroine must be like, as sometimes depicted in movies, where a little bit of blood is let into the syringe and then the mixture injected back. Musical Eros & Thanatos... One could say Spectre might be a musical metaphor for life itself, from birth to death with a promise of infinity or immortality.

It's the music like this, fresh and adventurous, that brings all deserved praise to the Kronos Quartet. Short stories? No. More like synopses for epic novels, greater than life.

very inconsistent.......2000-12-10

Like other Kronos releases, the music on one track will be fantastic, and on the next will be awful. I love Elliott Sharp's "Digital" (how he did that with a string quartet is beyond me), Henry Cowell's "Quartet Euphometric" and Stephen Mackey's "Physical Property." The Johnson, though, is tedious, and the Zorn piece is fantastically irritating and goes nowhere, and the Pandit Pran Nath is extremely boring. Oh well. Buy it if you can get it cheap.

After having been swept up by Marshall's electronically enhanced music, it was disappointing and disillusioning to hear it in the Muzak format. This is one album that should be passed over for the earlier renditions.

This is a great sampler for new fans, as well as a great addition to your Marshall Crenshaw collection. Super cross section of tunes. I love the talk in between songs, gives you a great sense of "being there." Much better production than other live disc, which is cut up and choppy. If your a fan- you gotta have this.

Did he listen to these tapes before releasing them?

Marshall Crenshaw has an ear like no one else -- for the pop hook, the unforgettable guitar lick, the surprising chord change, the addictive chorus. His brilliant studio albums over the past 20 years haven't received anywhere near the notice they deserve. Nor have there been enough of them -- I guess that explains why so many of us snatch up anything he releases!

However, this one won't get a second listen. (Okay, maybe a second, but no THIRDS!)

The songs are great but pale in comparison to the studio originals. The playing and singing are sloppy and reveal nothing new. The sound and arrangements are surprisingly amateurish coming from someone with such meticulous studio standards (and amazing studio technique!) And shy guy that he is, the onstage patter is limited and predictable.

By all means, support this guy by buying his complete studio catalog - but you can safely skip this one.

Loses Something in the Translation.......2002-06-09

Marshall Creshaw is an outstanding musician. As such, he should understand that it is incumbent on the musican to take a few minutes to repurpose/rearrange a song for acoustic presentation. Many of these cleverly crafted electric pop songs just don't translate easily in an unplugged format. They are presented with the same vibe and tempo as they are when Crenshaw is backed by a full band.

This is a good album with a few gems and frankly a must have for Crenshaw fans. However with a little extra work from Crenshaw on the front end, it could have been a truly great album.

A loving tribute to a father from his son.......2005-03-25

It has always been Andrej Szpilman's dream to have his father's songs published in the western world. As the executive producer of this cd, he has fulfilled that dream. Some of his father's songs recorded for the cd were composed during his times in the Warsaw Ghetto in 1941. Wendy Lands lovingly sings these songs with a beautiful heart-wrenching voice.

Hunt down the originals.......2005-01-20

happened to be living in Poland at the time of the release of Polanski's film 'The Pianist', and Polish Radio issued a commemorative boxed-set of archive recordings of Szpilman as pianist and composer. Unfortunately, this set does not seem to have been released outside Poland (though some of the piano tracks have been issued separately by Sony). One of the discs is devoted to some 25 of Szpilman's 'Piosenki' (chansons, popular songs) in archive recordings from the 50s, 60, and 70s of (predominantly) the composer's own arrangements - typically for sumptious dance orchestra or big band, and featuring some of Poland's most popular singers (unknown of course in 'The West').

Only when one hears these songs with their original Polish texts (whether one understands them or not), harmonised, arranged and sung in a style that bears the authenticity of their own time, can one appreciate the (no doubt well-intentioned) folly and inadequacy of this Wendy Lands collection. These new English texts are not translations, so the words have been artificially grafted onto a melody that has been crafted to set and convey text with quite another meaning. Of course the quality of Szpilman's material ensures that the new songs based on his melodies are perfectly respectable as atmospheric bluesy-jazzy numbers, but I can't help wishing that some executive had had the courage to release an album of the songs in their original language and colours... They are incomparably more atmospheric, haunting, charming, melancholy and elegant than the 'versions' presented on this new disc. Any lover of Edith Piaf or Jaques Brel, for example, would fall for them immediately - the inpenetrability of the language only adds to their charm, and is far more meaningful than the second-rate doggerel shoe-horned to the melodies here. I hope these Polish recordings will become generally available soon - if not, you'll have to make friends with a Pole, get a cheap flight to Warsaw, or petition Polish Radio! It really is worth it - the old recordings are charming and heartbreaking.

Huge Disappointment.......2004-02-27

After enjoying the autobiography and the movie, my family's expectations for this recording of Szpilman's songs were extremely high. From all angles, these hopes were crushed. The songs were probably - after their composition - given their first performance in a nightclub and that later exposure over Polish radio would hve retained the European night club feeling. The arrangements were far off the mark , both in their choice of instrumentation and in their composition. As for Miss Land, her voice is better described as "dreary" and "monotonous" rather than 'dark" and "smoky" as some have described it. To put it blunt.ly, she has no "voice" only breathy sighs.

I suggest that Andrzej Szpilman, Wladyslav' son, have another go at this project. During my Foreign Service career I have spent many months in Warsaw 1960-1962 and many hours at the Congresova and other night clubs. It shouldn't be too hard to persuade some Polish musicians to cooperate in a project to re-create Wladyslav's songs imbued with their original charm and spirit.

Finally, I wonder if the English lyrics followed the original Polish or were completely different.

Who is this woman!?!.......2003-06-17

What a beautiful voice, what sensitive, expressive delivery. I bought this album on a whim and I am blown away by the whole ensenble of fine musicians - but especially by Wendy Lands. The recording quality is clean and crisp, the songs evocative, intelligent, and melodic.
The last album that similarly impressed me was Norah Jones.
Then to realize that these melodies were written by Wladislaw Szpilman (the subject of Roman Polaski's "The Pianist") just adds to the wonderment of this beautiful album.
Please, more Wendy Lands! Bravo!!!

Truly Sublime!.......2003-06-15

I was suprised to learn that Wladyslaw Szpilman wrote contemporary songs. I was aware that he wrote compositions, but it never entered my mind that he wrote such beautiful songs that are on this CD. After seeing "The Pianist" and reading Spzilman's book and then seeing the DVD with an added documentary on the making of "The Pianist", my curiosity was piqued. Andrej Spzilman, the son of Wladyslaw, long dreamt of introducing his father's songs to the west and he chose Wendy Lands to sing these hauntingly beautiful songs. Upon purchasing this CD, I was hesitant that I might find them too much in the vein of 'Easy Listening'. I am glad to say that was not the case. I played it three times and should Wendy Lands continue to sing the songs of Wladyslaw Spzilman, I would be grateful. This is a very beautiful album and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Wladyslaw Spzilman did not merely survive the most grim conditions of The Holocaust, he thrived through his love of music and this album is proof of what a genius he was. I look forward to a second CD of his songs sung by Ms. Lands. Her heartrending interpretations draw the listener in. This is a truly sublime album!

Of course it's all a matter of taste. I find most of Britten's operas first class with no exception. 'Gloriana' is an under-recorded jewel, full of melody and emotion. 'Turn of the Screw' a masterpiece of claustrophobic sense. 'Rape of Lucretia' full of chamber sensibility. And the performances cannot be bettered.
Need I say more? DECCA is paying an enormous service to collectors with these releases, especially those who have a real concern with storage space. They deserve 10 stars, if available.

Britten's lesser operas.......2007-05-13

I loved Britten's Operas 1. So I snatched this item up right away. It's o.k. but not as good as the first collection. Death in Venice was the only opera on these discs that I really cared for. It's every bit as good as the Hickox version so if you already have one there's really no need to buy the other. As for the other operas they're nowhere near as good as Billy Budd, Peter Grimes, or Albert Herring. For those just discovering Britten's operas start out with the first boxed set.

As one of the leaders of an exciting new generation of countertenors, Brian Asawa benefits not only from his distinctive voice, but also from his record label's publicity machine, which has made his name and his first two recordings strongly recognized by critics and listeners. Asawa's success at the Metropolitan Opera Auditions in 1991 and his many opera performances in the United States and abroad certainly haven't hurt his career. The voice we hear is unquestionably pretty and technically refined, but its throaty, dark timbre sounds more like the efforts of a man trying to sound like a woman. He just doesn't have that uniquely male countertenor quality exemplified by three of Asawa's more engaging colleagues--Andreas Scholl, David Daniels, and Daniel Taylor. That's not to say that these performances of some of the 16th century's loveliest songs are not eminently listenable and occasionally sublime. Asawa's agile voice projects a strong character coupled with an effortless delivery that will appeal to many listeners. He has an annoying habit, however, of singing slightly behind the beat and gradually leaning into longer-held notes. --David Vernier

I've really tried to like Brian Osawa but when I hear this CD, it sounds to me like he's faking his way through the songs, though I doubt he in fact is. It's passionless.Thankfully I bought this CD used for only $9.99 CDN. Regretably, I will likely be selling it back to the used CD store from which it came. Daniel Taylor and James Bowman's Love Bade me Welcome would be a much better selection, i bought it new and its worth every cent!

Sorry, but this self-involved, primping prissy, gen-x "amerrican" version of lute song is a far cry from what I would have hoped to have heard from this supposed "promising" artist. The only promise we can hope for is that he stops inflicting this pap on us. If this is the future of opera, get me outta here.

Pretty voice sings pretty songs, but it's pretty mediocre..........1999-07-04

This album of 16th century songs was VERY highly recommended to me by a store clerk at my local music retailer. I did not preview the album before buying it, but was intrigued by the seeming popular nature of the albums production and promotion. As a 20th centuruy composer and performer, I have dealt extensively with the human voice, in all it's many guises and forms. Asawa's voice has a sweet and fairly clean alto character, but the desired strenth and passion of the counter tenor labeling is obviously lacking. I do not doubt that future albums, perhaps featuring a more complex instrumentation and format will show that Mr. Asawa's voice can be something more than a young alto with an overindulgent rubato complex. The album is not the worst I have heard utilizing "non-traditional" male voices, but the clarity of line and sensitivity needed to convey emotion in these songs is something that perhaps is better left to a more tenured voice. I am ooking forward to seeing what the future brings us from Mr. Asawa, but I do hope he will be braver with the timbres and colors in his voice. It is truly a shame not to let the emotive quality of the counter tenor voice lead the way over "technical" purity.

When you start the CD and sit back you will literally think you have died and gone to heaven! Brian Asawa is heaven on Earth!

If you have not heard anything from Brian, you are in for an extraordinary treat. Brian's voice is an incredible gift that every person should be exposed to. "The Dark is My Delight" is a wonderful display of Brian's range and vocal gifts. A collection of mostly 14th Century lute songs, it is a perfect subject for Brian's unique voice. "Come Again, Sweet Love" is a perfect opening song as it gives you his full range and style. In the beginning you cannot believe that this sweet, melodious voice can be coming from a human, muchless a male. You'll be thinking that throughout this wonderful CD.

There are few CDs that are so extraordinary but then again this is Brian's first CD. EVERYONE should listen and expose themselves to Brian Asawa's talents. He can only be looked upon as a rising countertenor star soon to be at the same level as the "great tenors!" I am not exaggerating. FIVE STARS and TWO THUMBS UP!!! There is nothing more I can say!

Brian Asawa is simply heaven on Earth! Nothing else can describe that wonderous voice of his. You literally feel like you have died and are hearing the angels welcome you to their kingdom. When you listen to the CD you'll understand!

The compilation of songs here are an excellent line-up for Brian. It allows him to, in a sense, tell you stories with excellent lute accompaniment. "Come Again, Sweet Love" was an excellent choice to lead off the CD as it showcases the extraordinary abilities of Brian. His sweet and melodic voice almost transports you back to the late 1500s when this song was written. In fact, you will probably get that feeling with every song on this CD but it is to Brian's abilities that we credit this.

There are very few CDs that I can/do recommend so highly. Brian Asawa is a rising star of countertenors to the same level as the "great tenors." I do not exaggerate when I say this. He has a vocal gift that must be shared with the world and the more people that hear him the better THEY are for it. FIVE STARS and TWO THUMBS UP!!! What more can I say!!!
