Nobody hates a cliché more than a conscientious record reviewer, but the fact is there are no losers on Grammy Nominees 2005. Though not all the acts represented here walked away with a golden statuette for their efforts, many —including Alicia Keys, Los Lonely Boys, and Maroon 5 —did, and the ones that didn't handily demonstrate why they earned the nod. Gretchen Wilson represents all that's right with modern country via her inescapable "Redneck Woman," and the genre jumble of relative newcomers Kanye West, Joss Stone and Josh Groban likewise make the case for keeping the radio dial spinning. Older listeners are the real winners here, though: Brian Wilson, Elvis Costello, Prince and U2 pull former awards-show junkies into the present and confer generational props at the same time. -Tammy La Gorce

4 out of 5 stars Great Collection.......2007-06-02

I like these collections as a short-hand way of finding out what's happening in pop music these days. I like the opportunity to be exposed to things I might not otherwise listen to. It's too bad that all the Grammy nominees couldn't appear here but, hey, music is a business after all. All in all a good investment.

5 out of 5 stars FULL SPECTRUM MUSICAL COMPENDIUM.......2007-03-23

WOW! What a collection! Just like fine wine, you get good years and then you get better years. This is the latter. Some years (that will remain anonymous to protect the guilty), the Grammy collection is overweighted with what sounds like ONE SONG performed by different groups. No such worries here.

So sit back, enjoy a bottle of your favorite wine (or, if with the Gretchen Wilson Tailgate Party, your on-sale bargain brew) close your eyes and travel the landscape of the year that was 2005 (or, if with the G.W.T.P., yodel).

1 out of 5 stars Total garbage........2006-01-23

This collection shows us, Jack and Jill public, how narrow minded the Grammy voters are today. Not one track on this so-called collection is worthy of a listen or a grammy nod. QUIET.

1 out of 5 stars The Verdict Is In . . ........2005-12-10

YAAAAAAAAWWWWWWNNN! Don't even bother buying and listening to this CD. Every song on here lacks emotion, meaningful lyrics, and any type of memorable melody. Standards are set so low that any untalented fool can get a record deal, sample to their hearts content, and win a Grammy. Skip this and get Stevie Wonders greatest hits collection.

3 out of 5 stars Just okay.......2005-08-18

I've purchased these since 2002 and was not pleased with this one...I would check out the songs before you buy this round.

1 out of 5 stars 2.3/10.0.......2005-07-13

This collection of 13 songs all nominated by the Grammy Awards institute just goes to show: awards ceremonies such as these are lazy attempts to annihilate the United States population's critical musical-listening abilities. Although my generalization of choice for this compilation would probably be "overproduced tripe" there are certainly some low points as well. Let's walk through the songs and examine the Grammy's rather unscrupulous motives for each selection.

Tracy Chapman, "Give Me One Reason"

In a stunning move, they put their best foot forward with this sparse acoustic melody. Don't count your eggs before their hatched, though, because Chapman's song here has quite a lack of inventiveness to it; how many times can you say "give me one reason" in one song before you put even your most mindless music listeners to sleep?

The Motive: Cheap acoustic filler, not to mention it lulls the listener into a false sense of security. If only the rest of these songs were as mediocre!

Eric Clapton, "Change The World"

What has happened to Clapton's talent for well-composed lyrics matched with really spectacular guitar solos? Has the old man let the impotency he suffers in his unmentionables (due to the smoking of one too many Thai sticks in his early youth, no doubt) creep into that cranium of his? I hate to have to tell you this, but "Change The World" is noxious pop ditty of little substance and even less style.

The Motive: Once listeners have realized that even Clapton has traded in his musical ability for the widespread acclaim of the hordes of tasteless music listeners, they'll accept that this is indeed the day the music has died.

Celine Dion, "Because You Loved Me"

I wish I could convey to my fellow reviewers how much I despise this song. Dion's success is due entirely to the musical junta that has propped her up, placed her onto the music scene. Do not be fooled; she has no song-writing talents, and most of her voice is due to the high-tech frills of a modern music studio.

The Motive: This is a clear attempt to make baby boomers forget there were people like Joni Mitchell and Janis Joplin around when they were young. Neither of these song-writers would dare have the audacity or superficiality to put a song like this out there. It's a quick-fix solution for the loss of these vocalists that has inspired the musical world to laud Celine Dion's "talent for music."

Alanis Morisette, "Ironic"

I hate Alanis Morisette. There, I said it. My younger sister could out-sing her, and I could come up with better lyrics in my sleep. How obvious can you be to point out the ironies of life while never saying anything meaningful about it? Further, Alanis has one of the worst voices ever to disgrace the music industry. It's a nagging kind of whine of a yell that convinces you that she must be a much bigger bitch in real life. Her husband deserves the kind of pity I can't afford to shell out.

The Motive: Quite likely the motive here is to destroy the listeners' once fine-tuned auditory nerves.

Smashing Pumpkins, "1979"

A mellow song about nothing more than relaxation... and drug culture. Although the Pumpkins should be applauded for their work on Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness (one of Pumpkins' lesser albums, though light years beyond this compilation), this is not one of their better songs on that record; it isn't quite blessed with the boldness and melodic strength of a typical Pumpkins' song.

The Motive: A paltry attempt to convince the music-listening public that this is the best the Pumpkins could do. A laughable attempt to- my advice is to blow your next paycheck on a factory sealed set of The Aeroplane Flies High, and never look back.

Garbage, "Stupid Girl"

A good song, in its way. On this track, Garbage is found condemning a girl who finds no value in the world. If you've paid attention to pop music in the last 20 years, you've probably heard songs like this a dozen times, but Garbage stylizes this version of that formula by leaving plenty of musical grit on the husk of the song.

The Motive: The Grammy institute's attempt to hustle the self-proclaimed musically rebellious into the fold.

Jewel, "Who Will Save Your Soul?"

I feel rather bad for young girls who followed Jewel's every move, bought her every cd, postered their rooms with pictures of her face... and then heard Intuition while rolling down the road in their Honda Civic one day. Probably they cried themselves to sleep, distraught that yet another one of their favorite singers had prostituted themselves in attempt to win the adulation of the masses. Of course, by that time, the young girl had turned into a college girl, and as you probably know, college is the sexualization (rather than the socialization) of the individual.
Anyways, this song here has Jewel's typical pre-0304 innocence to it; a song about making it through the day, penny by penny; though whether is has any musical virtue is debatable. It's catchy enough, but suffers from the over-produced feeling so common in 90s pop albums.

The Motive: If the song title isn't obvious enough, this song was nominated in a rather poor attempt to win the spiritually obtuse; existential Christians and the like.

No Doubt, "Spiderwebs"

I actually liked this song when it came out. Innocous as it is (a song about answering machine messages), it's actually the only song you can dance to on this album (without being ashamed of yourself, that is). Characteristic of early No Doubt, this song has a well-paced tempo that divulges into a slow kind of pop-punk serenade near the end; this is perhaps its only weakness, since the slowness gives the song an uncomfortable awkwardness- they should have ended the song with the same tempo.

The Motive: See the motive for "Stupid Girl"

The Tony Rich Project, "Nobody Knows"

If this song makes you cry, I have to tell you: I can't be your friend. Only a self-conscious bastard who thinks he is a "sensitive soul" could cry while listening to this (in fact, I'm betting one of the few people who cried while listening are the people who composed it!) Unfortunately though, that's pretty much the only purpose this song can be suited for; it has no other musical scope than that. It's actually an entirely droll, uncomfortably benign song, useless to anyone other than those mentioned above.

The Motive: Truthfully, I don't understand why the Grammy Award people would nominate R&B's attempt at emo, unless there is some big market for emo kids who like R&B that I am unaware of.

Leann Rimes, "My Baby"

Songs like these are a dime a dozen, and if I had a four-track in my basement, I'd probably spend a lot of time trying to parody them: "my baby is a tuna fish sandwhich, my baby is a cool iced tea, makes me feel like a slow cool summer." They're also intensely annoying.

The Motive: It's the only "country" song on the record, thus another attempt at showing the listener that this is good as it gets in the country category... Ryan Adams, anyone?

Toni Braxton, "Un-Break My Heart"

With all sincerity; the only people I could see loving this song are precarious co-dependents who like to roll around in a fetal positions on their hard wood floors all night. For the healthy or those who aren't insane, this song can be easily discerned as distasteful and terribly unoriginal.

The Motive: The Grammy nominators should be ashamed at foisting this upon the music-listening public. After Leann Rimes, they're probably thinking they need to return to the same sentimental drivel the rest of the album over-flows and leaks with.

Shawn Colvin, "Get Out of This House"

A stupendously awful song. There's almost nothing other than chorus; imagine the title repeated about 30 times, with a bit of extremely uninventive lyric filler, a bit of hoarse-sounding harmonica, and overdubbed guitars.

The Motive: I am telling you, there is no way in hell the Grammy people would nominate this except to destroy any remaining hope for a good song.

Gloria Efestan, "Reach"

Much like the Celine Dion track, but with a more convincing melody, and worse, more superficial lyrics. This makes yet again, for a very uncomfortable match.

The Motive: "Some days are meant to be remembered..." Agreed. Remember this one as "the day the music died."

5 out of 5 stars Pop Music at it's Peak!.......2002-03-12

...but goes down hill from here. Now we have to put up with Manufactured groups who get polished up produced and release hit singles and the girls go crazy...Not the case here! This is perhaps the most incredible collection of Pop music, definatly letting a person from every music genre to enjoy. Tracy Chapman crunk's up the Album with her Smash folk-type Hit "Give Me One Reason", followed by Eric Clapton's song from the movie Phenomenon "Change The World" (Both of these are probably one of the best two songs on the album!). Celine Dion returns in this album with her hit smash "Because You Loved Me" from the movie "Up Close & Personal" along with Alanis Morsette's career Jumpstart smash single "Ironic" which has to be a signature lyric of her's. Smashing Pumpkins return as well with their Hit "1979" including both fast and slow beats. The Band's name of Garbage definatly doesn't reflect their music...for "Stupid Girl" is a Great mix of Pop and Alterna Rock, and another great song Lyric-wise. Jewel debuts with her hit single "Who Will Save Your Soul" (which is the radio version not available on her album "Pieces of You"). She gives us a hint of slow-ish Folk Rock, before then new group No Doubt's hit Ska-inspired "Spiderwebs." Three ballads success the No Doubt single, including Toni Rich's "Nobody Knows" which is just great lyric-wise along with newcomer teen super country singer LeAnn Rhymes and her single "My Baby" (Which I don't like as much as "How Do I Live which Is what they should've included), followed by Toni Braxton's powerful heartaching ballad "Un-Break My Heart" where she is at her best...From her Sophomore album 'Secrets' and written by fammed songwriter Dianne Warren. Shawn Colvin appears on this album with her single "Get Out of This House" but not as good as her Hit single "Sunny Came Home" released only a year later. After a serious back injury almost threatening her life, Latina Superstar Gloria Estifan returns to us with her Olympic Theme song earlier that year "Reach", providing an optimistic message for us all. So overall, despite two or three songs I wish they would've put other ones in their places this album is Great! The lyrics are very meaning ful and Pop music is at it's best here. It seems to go down hill after 2 years from this with introductions of Britney Spears and N Sync as well as others. A True Masterpiece, and a must have for any music fan!!

5 out of 5 stars Great mix of music.......2000-12-09

One of the reasons why I love the Grammy albums, is that I am a music lover. And on the Grammy albums you can find such a wide variety of songs. Take this album for instance. There is blues (Tracy Chapman) pop(Celine Dion) country(LeAnn Rimes) R&B(Tony Rich) alternative(Alanis Morisette, Smashing Pumpkins) ska(No Doubt) soul(Toni Braxton) plus others. And not only is the music great, but a portion of the proceeds go to help support music in our schools. A great album and a very good reason to purchase this cd.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Compilation.......2000-10-10

This Grammy Nominees compilation is perhaps the most diverse of them all. From the smooth and subtle beauty of "Who Will Save Your Soul" to the raw grit of "Stupid Girl" this CD has it all. It has huge hits ("Because You Loved Me", "1979", "Ironic", "Change the World", "Give Me One Reason") and lesser known songs ("Get Out of This House", "My Baby"). From the ska-flavoured "Spiderwebs" and the slow ballad "Un-Break My Heart" to the inspiring "Reach" and the heart-wrenching "Nobody Knows", this CD has a little something for fans of all styles. For background music, for bus-riding, or for sing-along music, this is a great choice.

4 out of 5 stars A mix of music for all different kinds of people........1999-02-09

I purchased 1997 Grammy Nominees, because although I am your average top 40 and pop loving person, I like a bit of everything. On a down day, for the slightly depressing and slower music, Alanis Morisette's "Ironic" is there along with "1979" from the Smashing Pumpkins and "Stupid Girl" from Garbage. For the country side of you, both Leann Rimes and Shawn Colvin are there, with what I think, are two of their best songs. For the calmer, happy-go-lucky listeners, Eric Clapton, Celine Dion, and Gloria Estefan offer a fabulous mix of inspirational music. The best dance song, though, is "Spiderwebs" by No Doubt. It is something that will really make you jump on the couch and swing around in circles. My two personal favorite artists on the 1997 Grammy Nominees CD are Tracy Chapman and Jewel. They both are fantastic songs. Whether you are listening to them before bed or while you're washing dishes, they are both great artists to listen to. A wonderful CD, with a little something for everyone to enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Flashback to Nineteen Nine Five.......2004-03-13

...I normally do not review "old" albums, but I will make an exception with this masterpiece. The Grammy series has seen both ends of the spectrum and this editon is conpletely flawless. There is not one song on this album that I disapprove of. I did not listen to music back in 1995, this album makes me wish that I did. An analysis of these classic tracks:
1.Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men"One Sweet Day"A-.Beautiful,that is the only word to describe the powerful and masterful work.No wonder it was #1 for 16 Weeks in that year.
2.Coolio feat. L.V."Gangsta's Paradise"A+.This bangin' summer track was THE best song of 1995.Right from the chilling beat to the deep lyrics, this song is what rap should be.Surprising that the Academy was bold enough to give this a Record Of The Year nod.
3.Joan Osborne"One Of Us"A-.She may have been forgotten, but this song is easily a classic.Everyone knows the words to this inventive and inspired theological track. It does pose a very good idea about God.
4.Seal"Kiss From A Rose"A.The song may be ungainly in construction, but it is graceful in delivery. It is one of those songs that just plain resounds with you and uses some brilliant "images".
5.TLC"Waterfalls"A.Since Lisa Lopez has passed a way the group is in danger. The is one the best R&B songs of the '90s.The message seems verey heartfelt whlie the lyrics and horn arangments provide a perfect vehicle for it.
6.All-4-One"I Can Love You Like That"A.They may have been second compared to Boyz II Men, but this a superb and perfect slow dance song.Very well done.
7.Michael Jackson"You Are Not Alone"A-.In the midst of all his legal troubles, here is reminder of his talent.MJ singing R.Kelly's emotional lyrics make this a terrific song choice.
8.Alanis Morissette"You Oughta Know"A.It's no mystery why Alanis was such a huge hit with everyone. This song shows the kind of rage and straight forward attitude most females don't have. Truly a one of a kind song.
9.Brandy"Baby"A-.The song shrinks in comparison to "The Boy Is Mine" and "What About Us?",still it is very catchy and slick in it's production.
10.Hootie & The Blowfish"Let Her Cry"B.When "Cracked Rear View" sold 12 Million copies,no one predicted them to be on the bottom of the bargain bin now. This song is not original or spectacular, but it delivers what it promises to.

11.Shania Twain"Any Man Of Mine"A-.This early track from Shania may not have been her best, but it shows true talent and a lot of potential as an artist.
Bottom Line:****.A perfect album, shows that sometimes less can be more(it only has 11 songs). Grammy got it right way back in 1995!

5 out of 5 stars Good Year.......2003-11-15

This was a good year at the Grammy's. Alanis, Mariah, and other created a good mix of music for this album, and I was glad to actually see some diversity at the award show. "One Sweet Day" "You Are Not Alone" "Any Man of Mine" "You Oughta Know" and "One of Us" are the sweet spots on the album. A good year for the Grammy's.

5 out of 5 stars Memories Come to Life.......2003-10-26

my step sister would always come over to my house and play this CD non stop. i grew up on this CD, literally. I developed my ear for hip hop, my first true love. i remember rapping to Left Eye's rap from Waterfall in my living room. i still know every lyric to this CD even today. "Kiss from a Rose" by Seal and "One Sweet Day" by Boyz II Men feat. Mariah Carey are my favorite romantic songs ever. And "One of Us" literally changed my life. It made me think philosophically at such a young age. i was such a hip hop baby. I remember rapping in the car to "Gangsta's Paradise" over and over again until my mom yelled at me. This CD is magical in my opinion. its the ultimate CD for any collection and i advise everyone to have it.

4 out of 5 stars Good compilation........2001-01-13

Another great Grammy album. 11 good songs from the Grammy nominated songs of 1996. The categories are "Record of the year", "Song of the year" and "Best new artist". Featuring artists as diverse as Coolio and Shania Twain, it makes for a good mix. Something for most tastes.

5 out of 5 stars Nostalgic Moments.......2000-10-10

I love compilation CDs that include hits from a certain year. These songs are often never heard from again. Solution? 1996 Grammy Nominees! This excellent CD includes huge hits (One of Us, Kiss From a Rose, Waterfalls) that we became sick of. Now, 4 years later, we wonder where they went. This is a great CD to be listened to at any time. It is very upbeat and includes the first hits from Shania Twain (who now has about 60493 hits), Hootie & the Blowfish, Alanis Morissette, and the divine Joan Osborne. This disc is recommended for its wide spectrum of styles and variety. You will love this!

5 out of 5 stars Simply Wonderful.......2004-11-17

One of the better compilations of music and well worth the price. It has something for everyone from hits of the 40's right through today. I enjoyed the random mix of country, pop, rock, big-band, etc. and the varied song selection on each disk - you never know what's coming next. Great - simply great!

5 out of 5 stars An essential for Music lovers, but could they have waited ?.......2003-12-29

I got this for Christmas and was really impressed. I mean getting all these huge names together on one compilation is a feat in itself. But I think they overlooked a few things.

Ok, how do you get off not putting Barbra Streisand on a GRAMMY CD ? She has won (if my memory serves me right) more then 9 GRAMMIES and has been nominated for tons more. And Toni Braxton. "Another Sad Love Song" Won best song and she got best new artist.

they also didn't include U2 or Phil Collins. I'm sure thy've won something. I cannot believe (but i am thankful) they didn't put any of Britney Spears'GRAMMY winners on there. And I think they could have waited for a couple of years and put of killer tracks like "Fallin" by ALicia Keys and "Don't Know why" by Norah Jones.

But I kinda think that the focus of this CD was on the "GRAMMY Hall of famers." Ella Fitzgerald. Louis Armstrong. Duke Ellington. Peggy Lee. Among others, serve up a nice classy feel amidst the modern pop and rock beats.

All and ALL, if they had put "All the best" on here we would have had a ten CD pack people !! and who knows how much that would have cost. this one is already a little steep. But I think its worth every penny.

I really think this is great. Its defines the term something for everybody and may help bridge gaps between Teens and parents. It definataly expanded my musical horizon.

Now all I need to do is write GRAMMY and request "GRAMMY:MUSIC FROM THE NEW MILLENIUM." They might need to wait a few years before they have all the material necesarry for a stellar project like that !!

5 out of 5 stars Nice job!.......2000-07-12

I just bought this boxed set yesterday, and i'm listening to it now as I write this review. It's great and has a very diverse and eclectic song list. It pretty much has "something for everyone". It also only costs around fifty dollars or so, which is a very good deal for a four cd set. Definitely recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Very Highly Recommended.......2000-02-26

This Box Set is full of some of the greatest recordings of all time. Be prepared for everything from Louis Armstrong to Mariah Carey to Vladmir Horowitz to Bruce Springsteen, and on and on. It is superb. I find it hard to believe that one would ever tire of it.

5 out of 5 stars GRAMMY IS GREAT.......1999-12-01

The Grammy Box is filled with great songs from the past to the present. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Rap At It's Finest.......2005-03-01

It was 1988 when Grammy added the award for Best Rap Performance; the Academy's first recognition of rap as a music genre. Ten years later, the Grammys had three Rap category awards (Best Rap Solo Performance, Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group & Best Rap Album); they also felt so comfident with the popularity of the genre that they could release a separate CD, just for the rap awards. Coolio & L.V.'s "Gangsta's Paradise" was on "Grammy Nominees 1996", but this was still a big risk. The gamble turned out to be well worth it: "Grammy Rap Nominees 1999" is one of the best rap compilations ever put together. Every song is blooming both entertainment wise and artisticly. It's a wonderus mix with gangsta, old school, "rap-metal", dirty south, latin, and R&B based. A perfect nominee round-up:
(1) Busta Rhymes "Dangerous" A-. More relaxed than Busta's usual, yet it still contains a cool vibe in it's energy. His lyrics don't amount to anything but a highly enjoyable, slickly produced rap track. Busta finds his own voice and sticks to a terrific flow to create a catchy listen.
(2) Lauryn Hill "The Lost Ones" A+. Rap doesn't have to be violent and mean; something this song proves. Lauryn Hill's masterpiece song (yes, better than "Doo Wop (That Thing)") is almost philosophical in it's messages about relationships and life. Almost mezmerizing as it hooks the listener from the start, and keeps you with deep thoughts through the end.
(3) Wyclef Jean "Gone Till November" A. Wyclef ramains one of the most talented and underappreaciated artists in the industry. With it's R&B crossover effect, this is a beautiful, positive rap song packed with emotion. Wyclef keeps it at a perfect length and lets emotion slowly come out to achive a deep impact. This is a small treasure.
(4) Will Smith "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It" A-. A fun, endlessly enjoyable old school song that reminds us of what rap is really about. "Big Will" could not have chosen a better time for a comeback; his bouncy style was the perfect balance to the dark hip-hop of the time. No curses, no explicit content; just catchy lyrics with an unforgettable beat.
(5) Beastie Boys "Intergalactic" B+. Hot on the heals of OutKast' "Elevators (Me and You)", here is another rap song with a "sci-fi backdrop". It's refreshing to hear the Boys tweak their style and try soomething different. The song is never boring and often captures your attention. Quirky beats and tight lyrics; even if they don't really have a purpose.
(6) Jermaine Dupri feat. Jay-Z "Money Ain't A Thang" A. Designed to be a lyrical showcase for both Jigga and JD; this suceeds phenomenally. Both artist keep creative verses coming in a terrific flow that never stops, or slows down. The content may be somewhat standard; but the production more than makes up for it. If nothing else, this is two artists at the top of their game. In the end, this is a great rap song.
(7) Lord Tariq & Peter Gunz "Deja Vu (Uptown Baby)" A. One hit wonders? Without a question. But this still remains THE rap anthem for New York City; the lyrics have a quite unique flow and beat to them that we don't even mind the long running time. Also makes a terrific use of Steely Dan's "Black Cow". Not the best rap song ever, but a good one.
(8) OutKast "Rosa Parks" B. OutKast is possibly the greatest rap group ever, but this isn't their best work. The song is different and blooming with their own unique style. The oddness benfits the song at first then becomes distracting, as the song begins to lose it's purpose. It's a mess, but it's a mess that is definetly worth a listen.
(9) Pras Michel feat. Ol' Dirty Bastard and introducing Mya "Ghetto Supastar (That Is What You Are)" A-. A terrific showcase for three imensely talented artists. The beat has a rather captivating effect, while the lyrics are filled with hidden depth and meaning. Mya also made her first performance on this clever, catchy track from the film "Bulworth".
(10) Big Punisher feat. Noreaga "You Came Up" A-. With a loud bang, Big Punisher kicked off Latino hip-hop in '98. This track is a cool, slick production which demonstates the emormnous talent he had as an MC. A tough chorus by Noreaga and a killer horn arrangment are also great additions.
(11) Jermaine Dupri and Mariah Carey "Sweetheart" A. Rap/R&B duets don't get much better than this. The two artists mix well together during this cool love song, filled with beautiful/cool lyrics. Jermaine is as great as ever, and Mariah proves that she can do pop, R&B and rap all with perfection. A terrific song for any genre of music.
(12) Ma$e feat Puff Daddy "Lookin' At Me" B. An enjoyable, lightweight rap track from the Bad Boy label. The only msjor flaw is that it is Puff Daddy who shine through on what is supposed to be Ma$e's debut single. You have to winder what the song could have been had Ma$e been allowed to take over; still the track ends up being a good time.
(13) A Tribe Called Quest "Find A Way" A-. Rap legends returning to top form. Instead of pounding lyrics on, the song is lightweight and develops with a relaxed ease. The lyrics and voices are as good as ever, although it's the beat that brings the song to take-off velocity. A small little song that reminds us where rap came from.
Bottom Line:****. Not only does this annouce rap as a major music force, but it conveys just how powerful the genre can be in it's top form. This is an album for not only current rap fans, but also for new comers looking for a terrific sampler. It may only have thirteen songs, but this is a unique album that is definetly worth many listens. THIS is what rap/hip-hop should be!

Actually I thought I already reviewed this ablum but I will give it another shot.
I brought this album because someone told me to and I loved the first song but couldn't really follow the rest. He had some remakes of some old songs (or atleast it sound that way). I gave him 3 starts for effort. I think he has alot of potential if he could be more original.

Worth buying in my opinion, if you like the songs but don't think you would buy the individual cd's they are on, you know? Good selection.

In its own words, the Recording Academy is "a visionary group of music professionals and label executives." Unfortunately, as is made painfully obvious by this uninventive Grammy R&B/Rap Nominees 2001 collection, the Academy's collective eyesight is myopic. Given that label execs like Lyor Cohen (Def Jam) and Tommy Mottola (Sony) sit on the Recording Academy's executive council, it's no wonder that the list of nominees reads like an old boys' network patting itself on the back. Included here are vocabulary-challenged dog enthusiast DMX, aging multimillionaire/prototypical gangsta Dr. Dre, and would-be seductor R. Kelly. In the rap arena, the Academy ignores much of the best work of 2000, such as independently released, succulent albums by the likes of Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek, Blackalicious, and Zion I, and the risky major label work of rhyme genius Ghostface Killah. Eminem, a white boy's wet dream and the Grammy's bid for controversy, figures prominently in the mix, however. On the R&B side of things (where the 2000 pickings were slimmer), the only really noteworthy albums of the year, D'Angelo's Voodoo and Jill Scott's Who Is Jill Scott, get the nod--and so do gaudy panty-raider Sisqo and career tearjerker Toni Braxton. Can't wait for the telecast. --Lizz Mendez Berry

5 out of 5 stars Urban Music: 2000.......2005-04-01

"Grammy R&B/Rap Nominees 2001" is a highly satisfing collection of modern urban music. It is also a comeback after the abysmal "Grammy Rap Nominees 2000"; an album that made the mistake of only containg ten songs, half of them being utterly worthless. Adding R&B in addition to the rap is a smart move, as it gives the album more variety and expands the styles. There are a few forgettable tracks here, but the album holds together well because it does contain mainy of the best singles in the genres:
(1) Aaliyah "Try Again" A-. There's a really nice undercut of hip-hop here, which gives the song alot of it's edge. Aaliyah's voice adds conviction to make the lyrics sound passionate, and add some depth to them. Proof that not all R&B has to be sad; you get completely wrapped up in Timbaland's production.
(2) Erykah Badu "Bag Lady" B+. Normally, I'm not a very big fan of her work; I find that her style drags out any emotion she attempts to create. Yet this song works because of the beautiful, heartfelt lyrics. Her voice lacks the impact that is expecting in R&B, but is suitable for the feelings of sadness which the song inspires.
(3) Toni Braxton "He Wasn't Man Enough" A-. A strong, felt R&B song, Darkchild's production makes it one of her best; in the same league as "Un-Break My Heart". Darkchild's beat combined with Toni's fiery voice and style creates a winning combination for the listener.
(4) Kelly Price "As We Lay" B-. Not a bad song, just one that seems a little two standard. To be fair, Kelly Price does have a fine, classy voice, but she doesn't have much material to sing. This is a pleasant song, with a nice retro feel, that lacks the edge found in today's best R&B.
(5) Jill Scott "Gettin' In The Way" B. Jill Scott starts with average material, but doesn't settle for it. Her voice and style is fiery and distincive enough to give the track some new life. She sings this sing with conviction, yet the listener never fully gets caught up in it. That aside, this should still be heard for the skill and production it contains.
(6) D'Angelo "Untitled (How Does It Feel)" C-. His debut LP, "Brown Sugar" (1995), was highly overpraised, and so is his new material. The attempt to make a retro style R&B song goes nowhere here, as his voice is very irritating with random highs and lows. THe beat starts out somewhat interesting, but we eventually realize that the song has nothing to say.
(7) Joe "I Wanna Know" B+. In contrast to track #6; this is a retro R&B track which works. The material is as old as time, yet Joe's classy, polished voice make it sound convincing and touching at all times. As they say: a very good singer can make an old song sound new; and that's what he does here.
(8) R. Kelly "I Wish" A. We all know that R. Kelly can make very good sex themed songs, but we often forget how beaufitful his music can be as well. At first we think that "I Wish" is just about an ex-girlfriend; then we listen closer and realize what the story really is. It's not easy to make an R&B song with this type of content, but he pulls it off fantastically. The modern edge mends very well with the song.
(9) Brian McKnight "Stay Or Let It Go" A. "Back At One"'s title track was the big hit, but this ws the best song. Everything about it works so well to create a deep, powerful, touching R&B ballad. The beat is so peaceful that it's tear inducing and Brian's voice carries much depth and impact.
(10) Sisqo "Thong Song" A+. Yes, the song is a naughty sex themed anthem, but it excells in that area. The lyrics, however brief, are very catchy and the beat is darn infectious, as it plays in your mind well after. This song also happens to be the sexiest R&B tune in years. Everything works so well that this crosses over into rap and pop as well. This is mainstream music at it's best.
(11) Common "The Light" A. Common is hands down a true MC. Just like Bone Thugz-N-Harmony and 2Pac, he is able to create rap with message and purpose, yet keep his street credentials as well. Those who thing all hip-hop is negative should listen to this intelligent rap about how to make a relationship work. A light and refreshing breeze for the genre.
(12) DMX "Party Up (Up In Here)" A-. Everything about this song just plain works. The beat is menacing, the lyrics are hardcore through out and DMX's flow never steps wrong. DMX may have developed a formula for his music, but it's hard to complain when it works so well. Put this next to "What's My Name" and "Fame", and it's clear to see how unique his music is.
(13) Eminem "The Real Slim Shady" A+. Here's an artist who always does his own thing and stands out from the crowd. This is a hands-down brilliant rap song with umapologetic, biting, hilarious lyrics that carry a bold message. There will never be another Eminem, and that's a relief. "The Real Slim Shady" is THE best song of 2000, and the still young millennium.
(14) Mystikal "Shake Ya Ass" B-. For every good quality about this song, there is a bad quality. As an angrier version of James Brown's style; it's sorta entertaining, but that is only the surface. In the end Mystikal's voice is not very appealing to the ear, and the material, while fun, is really about nothing. There was much better rap than this in 2000.
(15) Nelly "Country Grammar (Hot...)" A. Not only was this Nelly's wonderous debut single, but it was also opened the door for evry "Mid-west rapper". The sound, flow and lyrics are like nothing we've ever heard before and that's what most rap is lacking. Even the chorus, with it's R&B sample, sounds new and refreshing. This is a catchy, light and highly entertaining debut.
(16) Beastie Boys "Alive" B. Not the most spectacular work of their careers, but a suitable one. It isn't really about anything at all; it's just a nice little showcase for the Boys voices and proves that they still have what it takes in the rap industry. By no means a brilliant song, yet it has some enjoyable charms.
(17) Dr. Dre feat. Snoop Dogg "The Next Episode" A. A perfect example of what "gangsta rap" is really about. The lyrics are tough and explicit, yet the track is really two rappers having a good time. Brief and catchy; this song makes no intention to have depth, as it provides a showcase for two great rappers at the top of there game.
Bottom Line: ***1/2. There are a few snags on the album, yet they get shoved aside by the really good ones. In the end, this is a very good summation of 2000 R&B and hip-hop genres. Most of the essentails are included on the album. The only question the album raises is, why did they discontine the "Grammy R&B/Rap Nominees" series?

4 out of 5 stars Good Mix!.......2005-03-06

Even thought all of these song had been saturated by radio play and video play it is still a good compilation. Think about it now you can actually play D'Angelo's "Untitled (How Does It Feel)" as much as you want. Four years later and these songs still bang. C'mon now, "Shake Ya Ass" by Mystikal still gets thangs jumping. To be brief, there are 17 track disc and out of those over half I still keep in heavy rotation.

5 out of 5 stars Banging!!!.......2001-12-07

I bought this CD based on the artists/songs I liked. Typically, I have a 3-song rule: If a CD doesn't have at least 3 songs or more, I ain't buying it. The first song by the late Aaliyah is a nice, danceable, catchy tune, "Try Again." With a hook that sings, "If at first you don't succeed, you dust it off and try again." Erykah Badu drops some knowledge for the ladies on "Bag Lady" that samples Dr. Dre's "Explosive" from his Chronic 2001 album. Toni Braxton steals the male-hating, male-bashing crown from Destiny's Child, with a finger-wagging, told-you-so attitude that says, 'He wasn't man enough for me.' and that's why we ain't together no more. Kelly Price's remake of Shirley Murdocks' "As We Lay" retells the story of one womans' one night stand beautifully. D'Angelo seduces you vocally and {visually: remember this video, ladies?} with "How Does It Feel?". I really don't care for this song by Joe. I like his "All The Things Your Man Won't Do" better. You can find that one on the "Don't Be A Menace.." Sdtrk. R. Kelly remembers his mother and best friend in this compassionate song, "I Wish." Sisqo praises women who wear th-th-th-thongs!! Common praises his woman "The Light" that samples Stevie Wonder's voice. DMX gets {and keeps} the party hyped, with his club-banger, "Party Up". Eminem claims that there is only one Slim Shady, as well as one who could diss CAguilera and BSpears in one song. Mystikal, asks women to "Shake Ya A##" in his now James Brown-esque sound. Nelly introduces us to his "Country Grammar" with a remake of kids' double-dutch rhymes. The Beastie Boys come "Alive" and Dr. Dre proves that after the original Chronic episode, "The Next Episode" might be even better.

5 out of 5 stars Great bang for the buck!.......2001-10-05

Musical tastes vary dramatically but I bought this trying to get a CD with some good Rap/R&B as there were a lot of one-hit wonders and artists with very few quality songs on their CDs this year.

This album is great and I listen to it all the time. Many of the songs were played a lot on radio so some may be tired of hearing them depending on what radio you listen to. I, for one, listen to mainly CDs and watch MTV. I don’t listen to radio due to too many crappy songs and too many commercials.

If you want another good R&B album I recommend the 2000 Soul Food – the series CD. Great R&B and good bang for the buck.

4 out of 5 stars ~!@#$%^&*().......2001-08-29

I baught this CD and I think that it's great, except for a few songs. Here's what I think of the songs: 1.Aaliyah-Try Again-Great song. Amazing lyrics and a very good chorus and beat. 5/5 2.Erykah Badu-Bag Lady-Amazing song. Very good voice, catchy chorus and a great instrumental. 5/5 3.Toni Braxton-He Wasn't Man Enough-Not a bad song. Great voice and very good lyrics. Good for dancing. 3/5 4.Kelly Price-As We Lay-Pretty good song. It has average lyrics, a very good voice and a very good beat. A bit slow though. 4/5 5.Jill Scott-Gettin' In The Way-Amazing song! Great voice and beat. One of the most chillest songs I've heard in ages! 5/5 6.D' Angelo-Untitled-Pretty good. Very good beat. There is too much repetition and his voice is too quiet. 4/5 7.Joe-I Wanna Know-Very good lyrics and voice. It's too slow and it has a boring beat. I think Joe could do better. 2/5 8.R. Kelly-I Wish-Great song with amazing lyrics and beat. He also has a very amazing voice. 5/5 9.Brian McKnight-Stay Or Let It Go-Average beat and lyrics. I find it's a bit boring. 2/5 10.Sisqó-Thong Song-Very good for dancing. Amazing voice, good beat and a funny chorus. I'm a huge Sisqó fan, so I'll give him a good rating. 5/5 11.Common-The Light-Another very chill song. Great beat and average lyrics. Good chorus. 4/5 12.DMX-Party Up-Amazing song. Very good lyrics and a very good instrumental. I would have preferred if they put "One More Road To Cross" or "The Professional" or something, but this is a great song. 5/5 13.Eminem-The Real Slim Shady-Not the best song. Great lyrics and instrumental. I think that this song is very annoying and that Shady has much better songs than this one. 2/5 14.Mystikal-Shake Ya ***-This song totally stinks! The only good things about it are the instrumental and the funny chorus. This song has no rhythm and it's just a whole bunch of screaming. This is by far the worst song on this CD and probably the worst song that Mystikal ever made. It would have been alot better if they put in "Ready To Rumble" or "Danger". 1/5 15.Nelly-Country Grammar-A very good song. A very catchy chorus and average beat. Amazing for dancing. 4/5 16.Beastie Boys-Alive-Amazing song. Other than "Intergalactic" and a few songs from the album "Check Your Head", this is probably one of the best songs by the Beastie Boys. 5/5 17.Dr. Dre-The Next Episode-By far the best song on the album! Great chorus and voices. It also has very good lyrics. I totally LOVE this song. The only thing I don't like is that Dre barely does anything on this song and that it's too short, but it's still amazing! 6/5 I really hope this review is helpful to you!
