Even those who scoff at the idea that rock & roll is the devil's music have to think twice when listening to Pantera. The pill-popping, strip-bar-ogling, beer-guzzling Texas combo takes Metallica's speed-metal cues to new heights of brutality and sacrilege. Fortunately, they're extremely good at what they do. The polyrhythmic complexity of Vinnie Paul's drumming in "Psycho Holiday" and guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell's breathtaking solo in "Heresy" are examples of state-of-the-art metal musicianship. Vocalist Phil Anselmo often sounds like Metallica's James Hetfield, but his brooding croon on "Cemetery Gates" and his falsetto screams on the blindingly fast "Shattered" are more like vintage Deep Purple. Released in 1990, Cowboys made Pantera one of metal's top draws during an era in which it was almost eclipsed by alternative rock. --James Rotondi

5 out of 5 stars Step aside for the Cowboys from Hell!!.......2007-07-18

Cowboys From Hell (1990.), Pantera's first recognised studio album (their fifth if you count their four album releases during the 1980's which the band now totally disregards)

At the turn of the 90's nobody would have expected Pantera to become one of the greatest metal bands of the decade and in fact of all time. The band had released four inconspicuous glam metal styled releases in the previous decade which brought them very little success. However, being remembered as a little known glam act was not to be Pantera's fate. At the end of the 80's the band were able to complete a drastic stylistic change to their sound, making themselves much more heavy and brutal. After then being turned down by numerous record companies, Pantera were finally signed to Atco Records (a division of Atlantic) and were able to release the beast that was `Cowboys From Hell'...

`Cowboys From Hell' is the start of a new era as far as metal is concerned. By altering their sound, Pantera all but created a new metal genre which we now come to know as groove metal or post-thrash. With `Cowboys From Hell', Pantera took the choppy and gallopy ryhthms of bands such as Metallica and Megadeth but added a great deal more heaviness, emphasis and groove to the mix. This coupled with the high pitched wails and screams of vocalist Phil Anselmo gave Pantera very brutal and uncompromising sound. This album was one of the heaviest things around at the time of it's release. `Cowboys From Hell' is a seminal metal classic in every sense of the word. The songwriting throughout the album is superb and I wouldn't say there was a single weak track on the whole work. I wouldn't say that this was Pantera's definitive, most genre defining work - that honour goes to the follow-up `Vulgar Display Of Power' - however, this for me is my favourite Pantera album. In terms of songwriting strength, I think this album wins out over all of the subsequent Pantera albums. Also, in my opinion, Dimebag Darrell, the legend himself gives his best display of guitar work on this album. Even though his guitar sound is a little more high pitched and shrill than on the later albums, he plays a fantastic array of inspired riffs, crips fills and majestic solos. In short he shows off his guitar work on this album more than any other and it is awesome to listen to. `Cowboys From Hell' is a little more thrashy than later releases, where the bands groove metal style would become more prominent. Vocalist Phil Anselmo also sings in a less aggressive style than on later album, however he does a fantastic job throughout the album. Vinnie Paul's drumming has its trademark stamp of impressive double bass and general aggression throughout the album. Rex, on bass, for me does a great job. Often the most overlooked member of the band, playing bass in a one guitar metal band is a lot harder than a band with two and he gives a great undercurrent to Dime's riffing.

This metal masterpiece gets underway with the title track `Cowboys From Hell'. This is definitive Pantera, heck it's a definitive metal classic! Dime's immortal riffs impress from the word go and this high energy opener makes for obligatory moshing every time its played. `Primal Concrete Sledge' is a short follow-up. Fast, low pitched, growling guitar work from Dime is supplemented by an unstoppable barrage of double bass from Vinnie. Phil Anselmo mixes up vocal styles very well in this song. `Psycho Holiday' is another classic off this album, the riffs are great and effortless and Anselmo's vocals scream through the speakers with intent. Dime fires out an inspired solo mid-way through. `Heresy' is another awesome song, this was one of the first Pantera songs that I ever heard. It is very gallopy and thrashy in style, especially with the main riff. There is yet another fantastic solo from Dime mid-way through. `Cemetery Gates' is the epic of the album, clocking in at over 7 minutes. A clean undistorted opening allows Anselmo to give a more understated vocal performance. This song, about the death of a lover has some more great riffs and solos. It also has an edge to it that shows of the band's glam past, however it is one of the best tracks on the album. `Domination' is an unstoppable juggernaut of a song, displaying Pantera's pioneering style brilliantly - espicially powerful is the outro with pounding chords and some high tapped guitar lines from Dime.

Next up is `Shattered'. A shorter song, it is another good thrashy tune with plenty of aggression and strong vocals. `Clash With Reality' is one of the more underrated tracks from the album and combines plenty of heavy, racing riffs with a cool melody. `Medicine Man' is much more darker in vocal and musical style. A stripped down verse led by the bass gives way to a gripping chorus with more high pitched vocal wails. `Message In Blood' is more signature Pantera with a heavy bonecrunching feel. `The Sleep' combines a more acoustic and cleaner sound to Pantera's music. The song's chorus is especially impressive and memorable. Then we finish with `The Art Of Shredding', which is for me another great showcase for Dimebag. He `really' does show us the art of shredding on this brilliant finale to one of the all time great metal albums!

So there we have it, an album of uncompromising heaviness and immense songwriting. Pantera never looked back from changing their sound and `Cowboys From Hell' was the start of a series of awesome releases from the band throughout the 1990's. This album is for me though their finest effort, a classic from start to finish. The album is well produced and each band member sounds great. Pantera defined a new aspect to the metal genre as well as a new generation of metal fans and deserve their lofty position in the minds of many. If you're looking to start listening to Pantera, I would recommend this album and the follow-up `Vulgar Display Of Power' as the place to start. I guarantee new listeners to this album will be hooked instantly, just like I was when I first bought it. An album not to be missed!

R.I.P. Dimebag Darrel

MY RATING: 10/10

Who wouldn't love this first mass produced Pantera album? YOu'd have to not have ear drums, or a brain.

2 out of 5 stars Good?.......2007-05-16

I bought this ancient cd at a thrift store, donated back 3 days later. I didn't find this cd all that great. Cowboys from hell was the only good song. everything else on this cd is just noisy boring riffs with typical guitar solos that have been done to death by millions of other players. The song structure is typical verse-chorus-verse-chorus-verse-guitar solo-chorus. This is one of the main reason I don't listen to modern day music except rap (underground). Dimebagg Darrel needed alittle more practice, He is not a Legend. Don't get me wrong, he died horribly. But come on people.. A Legend??! They are hundreds of amazing blues and jazz guitarist that have had a short life and they didn't get the praise they deserve.
Phil cannot sing (scream). He sounds like he's singing on the toilet and taking a huge dump. The drummer is so-so. And I cant even hear the bassist.
I tried to give this album a chance but I always fall sleep halfway through the album. I don't understand why is this album so popular maybe I have poor taste.. whatever it is I still give it 2 stars for the effort and the 1st track.

I would have like to have more of their cuts on here, but it was very good anyhow.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT COLLECTION BY THE INTRUDERS, BUT...........2006-12-18

THIS IS A GREAT COLLECTION BY ONE OF THE MOST UNDERRATED SOUL GROUPS OF ALL TIME . I LOVE THE INTRUDERS: THE LATE , GREAT SAM "LITTLE SONNY" BROWN , EUGENE "BIRD " DAUGHTRY (ALSO , SADLY, NO LONGER WITH US) SONGWRITER PHILLIP "PHIL" TERRY,AND ROBERT "BIG SONNY" EDWARDS.THEIR RECORDS WERE ALL FANTASTIC , AND THEY HAD A SOUND QUITE UNLIKE ANY OTHER GROUP, BUT.....LET'S BE HISTORICALLY ACCURATE HERE . THE SONG " I'M GIRL SCOUTIN" WAS N O T THE ONLY INTRUDERS SONG NOT TO FEATURE "LITTLE SONNY" BROWN ON LEAD. ROBERT FERGUSON , BETTER KNOWN AS "BOBBY STARR" DID REPLACE "LITTLE SONNY" AS LEAD SINGER OF THE GROUP FOR A TIME ,{AND LEADS A NEW GROUP OF INTRUDERS TODAY), BUT, IN ADDITION TO SINGING ON THEIR HIT " I'M GIRL SCOUTIN", HE ALSO LEAD ON THE HITS, "I BET HE DON'T LOVE YOU (LIKE I LOVE YOU)", "THIS IS MY LOVE SONG",AND "PRAY FOR ME". TO THIS DATE, NOT A SINGLE INTRUDERS "GREATEST HITS" COLLECTION (ON CD OR VINYL) HAS INCLUDED ANY OF THESE BOBBY STARR- LED SONGS... NOR HAVE THEY INCLUDED THE "LITTLE SONNY"-LED EARLIER HIT "DEVIL WITH AN ANGELS SMILE" FROM THEIR NOW CLASSIC COLLECTORS ITEM 1ST ALBUM " THE INTRUDERS ARE TOGETHER " {WHICH ALSO, BY THE WAY,STILL HAS YET TO SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY ON CD.}UNTIL THESE SONGS ARE INCLUDED , THERE WILL NEVER BE A DEFINITIVE INTRUDERS "GREATEST HITS" COLLECTION...SO HOW ABOUT ABOUT IT, GAMBLE AND HUFF ?

5 out of 5 stars Intruders.......2006-08-14

WoW! Awesome. There's is nothing to compare to this. This is classic old school. I love it!

5 out of 5 stars Yes, The Album is as Great as Others are Saying.......2006-01-02

I know I'm not Original here, as the Previous 13 Reviews have awarded the Same 5 Stars to this Release, but I feel the need to Echo the sentiment. The Intruders, led by the Unmistakable Hurting/Cracking, Passionate Voice of Little Sonny Brown, are Grossly Underappreciated, These Songs stand among the Greatest in Soul History, Gems like "Together", "I Wanna Know Your Name", "Love is Like a Baseball Game", "United", and on and on....and the Long Version of "I'll always love My Mama", where Pt. 2 of the song (the second half, if you will, as listed on My Original 45 Copy I bought in 1973) has the Intruders Rapping, Playing the "Dozens", quite interesting to hear still; An Absolute MUST for Your Music Library...I am Pleased to have seen the Intruders Perform at Constitution Hall in D.C. in 1993, reunited with Little Sonny after Many Years away...The Pain in His Voice One Hears in many of these Songs was Real, Little Sonny Jumped from a Bridge near Philadelphia to His Death in 1995......RIP

These are the Intruders at their best, All their hit songs and more, An excellent CD.

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing, considering what it could have been.......2007-04-20

Take a look at the running times:

Disc 1: 60 minutes
Disc 2: 50 minutes
Disc 3: 61 minutes
Disc 4: 58 minutes

What gives Silva? There is *MUCH* more John Williams in the silva screen back catalogue by the Prague Philharmonic than what is in this set, and thats not including their entire discs devoted to Star Wars Films, Indiana Jones Trilogy etc. Why isn't Hook "When You're Alone" included on Disc 2? There's room. Why isn't 1941 on Disc 1? There's room. Why isn't Earthquake on Disc 3? There's room. Why isn't Far and Away on disc 4? There's room. Where's the other ten minutes of the Rare Breed suite on disc 3? Why isn't Midway on disc 1? Where are the Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Lots In Space tv themes? Etc. Etc. Etc.

C'mon Silva, most of these 4 disc mega boxes released in the past few years are packed to the brim, but not this one, and with new recordings made after this was released (the terminal, munich, geisha, war of the worlds, star wars ep 3, harry potter 3), it only makes sense for a "re-do" in the next couple of years.

Further, with Silva releasing the 100 Greatest Film Themes on six discs in a couple of months, it's only a matter of time before we see the ultimate six disc john williams set.

This isn't a BAD set to own, but it could have been much better and when compared to the Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry sets in this same series, this one is a major letdown.

5 out of 5 stars Always a pleaser.......2007-03-31

I listen to music all day with patients in my dental chair. This one is a winner with everyone. Patients always comment on how they recognize a song. Who doesn't love John Williams? His music transcends time.

5 out of 5 stars JOHN WILLIAMS 40 Years of Film Music.......2007-01-10

This 4 cd pack is an anthology of all John Williams works. From his earlier works "The Poseidon Adventure" and "Jaws" right through "Indiana Jones" and the most recent"Star Wars" prequel movies are included. Williams work in thriller and horror are also included. If you are into soundtracks and love movie music this is an essential buy. The quality of the music is excellent. With ten or more tracks on each cd it's well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Movie Music Magic & Memorabilia.......2006-12-13

This four CD set expands on the previously released John Williams Greatest Hits. It's a grand collection of nearly four hours of famous music scores from over forty years. There are many songs never before available in any collection. The short liner notes tell a great tale of musical movie history and include all of his numerous award nominations and wins. Each song (oddly enough) mentions the actors and the director, so fond are John Williams's memories of his work with these people. All of the conductors are mentioned along with specific orchestras, choirs, arrangement and orchestration specialists and even the publishers (contractual, I am sure). The only things missing are his early television scores, such as those for "Lost In Space" (by Johnny Williams back then). But with four discs, one has nothing to complain about and everything to enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars John Williams: 40 Years of Outstanding Film Music.......2006-11-28

I have been a huge fan of John Williams and I have known about his music for years. However, I never actually bought any of his music on CD. I was rather skeptical about purchasing this CD but when it arrived I knew I had made the right choice. The sound quality of the compilation is outstanding. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do a great job under the direction of Paul Bateman. The original London Symphony Orchestra CDs of John Williams' Star Wars Trilogy CDs are marginally better but this is still a great CD compilation. If you love ET, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter, you will love this compilation soundtrack. Buy it, listen to these CDs in the car and enjoy every minute of the collection!!!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good popular music........2005-08-14

The interesting issue about this recording is that Williams himself directs. It is always a plus to listen to music played by its author. Average performance by the orchestra.

5 out of 5 stars Still great!.......2005-07-23

John Williams has the magic of translating music from movies. Even not watching the movies themselves, you can still understand what's happening because of the music that comes with it.

I'm happy the music industry compiled this marvellous CD together. It has all the greatest hits like Luke and Leia, Indiana Jones march and the star wars main theme. These songs are really some of the great examples of Williams' finest.

Even if the music isn't really that clear in movies, it's still gives a great impact on the stories. If you watch a movie made up of only dialogues and fights, what's the thrill, we can see fights anytime anywhere. So the element that makes the movies really attractive and interesting is the music itself.

5 out of 5 stars Great Performances as well as Music.......2005-04-06

When I picked up this CD I was amazed. I am a big Williams fan and love the Boston Pops. All the pieces are well done and flawless (except for some small tempo issues in "1941") Though all the peices stand out the handsdown best is "The Cowboys" Overture. The ritch sound as well as the great musicmanship make this a joy to here. Another good highlight is the "Midway" March. Midway was a relitivley underated score being in the middle of "Jaws" and "Star Wars" (Both of witch are also on the CD but, Jaws could have had solid feeling but is otherwise performed rather great) The rousing March in my opinion is as rousing as "Raiders of the Lost Ark" or "Superman" (Both yet again are on the CD and Superman's opening is absolutly breathtaking even better than the actual soundtrack. The Trumpet and French Horn fanfare makes you yourself visualize the might of the man of steel himself. But the Midway march is given a stunning representaion with the ritch, lush sound of the Boston Pop's brass section. The CD also has some of John Williams music for the concert stage such as the well known Olympic Fanfare (1984 Los Angeles), The Liberty Fanfare as well as the Mission Theme (The NBC news anthem) all offer a nice break from the movie scores. The only down side to the CD is that because it was made in 1987 it doesn't have music from Hook, Far and Away, Schindler's List and of course Jurassic Park. But even though it lacks Williams' early 90's scores its always a Joy to listen to as well as a treat for the ears. So i give it two thumbs up and *****.
I advise any John Williams/Boston Pops fan not to let this gem slip through their fingers! ;)

5 out of 5 stars De Williams los Boston lo mejor..........2004-12-14

Grandioso.

5 out of 5 stars Williams at His Finest....as of 1987.......2003-07-13

For fans looking for a sampler of John Williams' music circa 1987, this CD is a treasure trove of selected movie and special occasion themes. While not as comprehensive as Sony Classical's Greatest Hits 1969-1999 collection, there is enough variety to satisfy even the most casual Williams fan. Included here among his famous themes (Star Wars, ET, Superman, and Raiders of the Lost Ark) are his 1984 Olympic Fanfare, "The Mission" (NBC News theme), and the rousing Overture to the John Wayne film The Cowboys. As always, the Boston Pops Orchestra shines under the baton of Hollywood's -- and America's -- favorite composer!

5 out of 5 stars The finest set of western swing ever. Timeless fun!.......2006-07-07

Western swing fans will be dancing in the streets over this brilliant box set. It features 99 cuts dating from 1932 through the late 40's. They run chronologically and features all the great architects of western swing: Milton Brown & his musical Brownies, Bob Wills & his Texas Playboys, Light Crust Doughboys etc. Even if you're not a fan of country music, you may enjoy this one. It is genuine feel-good, stomping music with honkytonk pianos, fiddles, drums, guitars and even saxes. This is without a doubt the best buy for any fan of this genre. It is timeless fun! Crank it all the way up, pop open a cold one and all of sudden it's 1938 and you're in a Dallas honky tonk. By the way, the liner notes in the booklet are outstanding with dates, pixs, stories. Most interesting was that the Crystal Springs Ramblers from Ft. Worth were a favorite of Bonnie and Clyde's at a popular dance hall down there. Great job by Proper Records!

5 out of 5 stars Good Luck in trying to find something better !.......2006-06-21

I read some of the other reviews and I can apperciate a lot what other folks are saying. I really agree with the one who said that todays Country Music makes them sick. What in the name of God does a naked Faith Hill rolling around a bed under the sheets singing some half baked so called Modern Country have to do with the music that I was raised on and grown to love. As the Great Bill Monroe stated "That junk ain't part of nothing",(I saw that on a FH video that was being played on cabel TV). What a moral let down, instead of appearing as one of our Country Stars she looks a lot more like a B-girl- that's where we are today. I said all that to say this: If you love WesternSwing like I do then you will love this set - it really has a lot of good stuff and takes you back to the days of Bob, Milton,Tommy,Leon, Spade and many other outstanding Western Swing artists. This set was a real welcome to my Swing Collection.
Keep in mind that this music ain't for everybody. If you like spending time listening to the likes of a feuding Toby with the Dixie Chicks then this real Roots Music ain't for you. But if you would be willing to sell your top coon hound to get the money to get tickets to see "Asleep at the Wheel" then you might be a fan that can apperciate what was started by Bob & Milton way down in Texas back in the early 30's.
While I type this review I'm listening to Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys perform "Faded Love" on my computer so I'll cut it short. Buy this set - at this price you can't afford not too. While you are at it do what I did and get the "Proper Records - Bob Wills/Take Me Back To Tulsa" also - you will be Blessed !
"ENJOY" Joe Kopeck / Parkville,MD.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Overview Of Western Swing.......2005-06-16

This 4 volume box set by Proper is a fantastic overview of that great American musical art form Western Swing.
It's not country, it's not cowboy, it's not swing, it's just great toe-tapping fun music!
The songs in this album are presented in chronological order thus allowing the listener to experience the growth and progression of this great music.
The songs are remastered originals and the sound quality is first rate.
There's also a booklet containing liner notes about all the artists and a discography.
I own several box sets by Proper and every single one is a bargain, well worth far more than the asking price.

5 out of 5 stars Musical history that is alive and well today.......2004-09-13

My first exposure to Western swing was the first Asleep At The Wheel Bob Wills tribute CD, and I have been hooked ever since. However, up until I bought this collection, I have only heard Bob Wills. I was pleased to buy this in a local branch of Half Price Books. In addition to Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys, it also has selections from Milton Brown, Patsy Montana, the Light Crust Doughboys, Spade Cooley - just to name a few. This vibrant blend of cowboy/fiddle music and black blues/swing has yet to wander far from my CD player!

5 out of 5 stars Western Swing is Western Folk Jazz no Hillbillies here!.......2003-12-12

This is a great panorama of Western Swing from its origins with Bob Wills and Milton Brown working together inthe Original Light Crust Dough Boys in the early 1930s to Tex Williams' great electric swing band from just after WWII. I've had these sides since Columbia issue an earlier version on LP more than 20 years ago.

This music has little to do with what was considered Country music at the time or its emasculated mutant descendants in Nashville.

This was not marketed as Country music. In fact in 1945 when Bob Wills, the acme of Western SWing, was the biggest grossing public attraction in the entertainment business, he had his sole invitation to the Grand Ole Opry, and then he almost walked out of there before he played a song because the hayseeds wouldn't let him bring on his drums and horns (not allowed onthe Opry until the late 1950s!).

Western Swing comes from Jazz from the pop Jazz of the 20s and early 1930s, included people who went back and forth between bands like Wills and Spade Cooley to the white big bands (though Bob Wills once tried to hire a black alto player[against the law in Oklahoma] and of late Les Paul has taken to claiming he saw Charlie Christian sit in with the Playboys at Cains and there are pictures of the Playboys having drinks in Chicago with black Jazz greats like Ben Webster!!). Townsend Wills' biographer interviewed many Playboys and none of them felt they were part of Country, but part of Jazz.

Basically it begins with people trying to play Jazz and Blues influenced music with the instruments of the old Southwestern Barn dance bands: guitar, fiddle, piano, adding in drums, and in many bands all the instruments of the Jazz orchestras. Very quickly Bobby Dunne added in the electric Hawaii, pedaless steel guitar and Leon McAuliffe who replaced him in the Doughboys and went with Wills was so well known that Bob Wills' introduction to him "Take it Away Leon" became a catch phrase in the whole country and beyond in the 1940s!

At its most hyperbolic height (captured here in the Space Cooley Orchestra's Oklahoma Stomp, a recording anyone with a set of ears should treasure) you had 16 and 18 piece orchestras with full fiddle sections (in the early 1960s Wills even rounded his fiddles with a violist from the Lawrence Welch band!), complete reed sections, and more brass than they needed, and exotic additions like the Harpist who kicks off The Oklahoma Stomp.

Further on than these recordings go, you would have players like Tiny Moore and Johnny Gimble who incorporated Bebop styles in their solos.

Along the way, mostly during that war time period when recording bans and players going in and out of the army and different bands make following a little harder, the straight western swing style of combining a guitar, steel guitar, and sometimes electric mandolin trio alternating with fiddle choirs took hold as the paradigm for Western Swing. For some reason in most bands the horns seemed to disappear or roll down to just one after WWII.

One thing about this music is that a very high level of musical technique and education became more and more part of the Western Swing environment. We know that European Jazmen like Stephan Grappelli followed the recordings of Hugh Farr who played with the sons of the pioneers and later Spade Cooley, and that Down Beat magazine described Eldon Shamblin out of Bob Wills' band as the best rythm guitar player in the country (slighting Freedie Green who even Eldon probably acknowledge was better).

The other thing in contrast with much of what was being presented as country music contemporaneously is that this was not being presented as "old time music," craddling close to old conventions, but a new hot dangerous music, drawn as close as comfort would allow from Black sources, from the dangerous white swing bands, and from the part of down home music involved in drinking, dancing, cheating, and other things not permitted in the Baptist Southeast.

WSM Grand Old Opry Stars toured the deep South playing in school auditoriums, church houses, and public squares. From the beginning Western swing belonged in barrooms, in dance halls, and other places where "the wine and liquor flow." Even Hank Williams wasn't allowed to use the word "beer" when he sang "My Bucket's got a hole in it" on the Opry. Meanwhile Western Swingers like Wills and Brown were singing about Cocaine and Opium, whiskey and beer back in the early 1930s.

And Smokie Woods wasn't called smokie cause he liked Tobacco. LOL. In fact his tune here called "Everybody's Trukin," about what is done "up in Harlem" includes much use of a word that does sound like truckin', but does not contain an r or a T but does start with an F!!

No this is not Nashville Country or even old time country music. This is Western guys and gals trying to be jazzy, bluesy, wild, whiskey soaked, drug high, hip to the secrets of Negroid nights of "truckin," playing their hearts out fast hot and heavy!

Anyone with ears should own this collection!

ps another wierd side note to this is on the great Hit\
"Smoke, Smoke, Smoke (That Cigarette)" both Tex Williams who sang it and Merle Travis who wrote it died of lung cancer!

3 out of 5 stars WOW! Just that CD Cover!!!.......2007-07-15

I have absolutely no idea what this CD sounds like, and unless anyone I know ever purchases it, I doubt I'll ever know. (A quick, knowledgable (sp?) snipe here, "Country Music" was NOT an oxymoron, vintage The Judds, Dwight Yokam, Randy Travis, and on back, but twits like Garth Brooks justify all the snide jokes made about Country Music.) OK, that said...well, I purchased Eve's "Let Me Blow Ya Mind" for the video (and I've never regretted the purchase!), so maybe, when "Griddle" is offered "used" or something, I'll snap it up. Again: that "lil' Cowgirl" is - WHEW! - almost as good as Viagra...

5 out of 5 stars I've Only Heard (and Seen) "Ghetto of My Mind"; Wow!.......2005-05-07

Over the years I have videotaped many Saturday Night Live programs, and the one which featured RLJ was near the one which featured Neil Young's great performance of "Keep On Rockin' (in the Free World)" so I kept that tape.

What I did not know - my videotaping habits then were better than my viewing habits - was that RLJ had an astonishing performance of "Ghetto" literally mesmerizing! Doesn't matter that the song alone couldn't equal the performance in 1989, that kind of performance was so unique in the best sense of the term that I will buy the CD without hearing even one other song segment.

Sorry I can't share that video with everyone who posted to this CD. You deserve it!

5 out of 5 stars A Definite "Desert Island" Disc.......2005-01-22

Although released in 1989, Flying Cowboys remains one of my favorite musical pieces in my entire collection of CDs and definitely one of the most essential in Jone's discography. It's high on my list of must haves if I was to be stranded on the immortal "desert isle".

Jones has always been a talented songwriter and always had a creative knack for telling her musical tales using vivid characters and lush musical arrangements. With some help from producer/songwriter/musician Walter Becker (from Steely Dan), she scores big on this project. The end result here is a mostly upbeat, poetic & jazzy collection of folk/pop with the exception of "Ghost Train". Although "Ghost Train" doesn't seem to fit into the mood of the whole, it is one of my favorites. It works extremely well in illustrating Jone's talent at more bluesier vocals and her overall versatility. From the ethereal "The Horses" to the calypso tinged "Love is Gonna Bring Us Back Alive", the other selections are upbeat, smoothly poetic and mildly romantic. Smooth jazz artist Vonda Shephard (from the Allie McBeal series soundtrack)and jazz great Randy Brecker also perform on a couple of selections.

For those not familiar with Rickie Lee Jones, I highly recommend Flying Cowboys.

5 out of 5 stars I gotta agree...........2003-04-02

...it's one of the finest albums you could own. Each time I listen, it reveals more to me and I can't stop listening. It's "perfect for all occasions" type of CD, it's a great feel good and happy recording. Love 'Ghost Train' and the introduction of more RLJ "characters" for us to meet - she must have had a great life, well so far! Each song holds a story within itself and you just want to hear more. If you are a RLJ fan, or even in you are not, and for some strange reason this is not in your collection, do something about it! Buy it, listen and you will know what I mean.

2 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music.......2003-02-14

This is a wonderful CD, brilliantly produced, with some of the best studio musicians in the world. The sheer musicality of the vocals and harmonies coupled with the musical genius leads to a truly incredible experience. A truly romantic piece, perfect for a night alone with the one you love. RLJ's poetic, deep lyrics only add to the lush sounds on this work of true art. This is RLJ's greatest album, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who has enjoyed her previous or later works. You will not be disappointed.

Often called the Frank Zappa of country music, Kinky Friedman--like Jimmy Buffett--knows how to poke fun at Nashville and pay homage to it at the same time. This first ever best-of collection oddly omits his "Wild Man from Borneo" and "Rapid City, South Dakota," but still captures the most outrageous of his social commentary (racism, classism, anti-Semitism), as well as his more serious songs ("Sold American," "Ride 'Em, Jewboy") about outcasts sad and solitary. Nothing is too gross (the mucus-lined ode to booger-picking, "Ol' Ben Lucas") or off-limits (the invitation to oral sex--"eatin' ain't cheatin'!"--in "Waitret, Please Waitret"). But no matter if one is offended by such references--or those to bestiality and "wetbacks" in "Asshole from El Paso," the hilarious parody of "Okie from Muskogee"--Friedman's importance in the pantheon cannot be denied. As his horrifying, if jaunty, treatment of the University of Texas sniper ("The Ballad of Charles Whitman") proves, he's a Lone Star throw-back to Lenny Bruce--a serious sociopolitical comic who turns a clear mirror on America, warts and all. --Alanna Nash

Album Description

With his signature cigar always in hand, Kinky Friedman uses country music as a platform to inform, amuse and outrage his audience. Starting in the early Â'70s, Kinky and his band, The Texas Jewboys, broke out of the stifling, often prejudiced, Nashville mold. Last Of The Jewish Cowboys: The Best Of Kinky Friedman, a mixture of live and studio recordings, includes many of his controversial hits, such as Â"Asshole From El Paso,Â" Â"Sold AmericanÂ" and Â"They AinÂ't MakinÂ' Jews Like Jesus Anymore.Â"

Never one for censoring himself, Kinky raised eyebrows with Â"Get Your Biscuits In The Oven And Your Buns In The Bed,Â" Â"Before All Hell Breaks Loose,Â" (off the pop album charting release Kinky Friedman) Â"Waitret, Please, WaitretÂ" (to be said with a lisp) and Â"The Take-It-Easy Trailer Park.

A great collection from a multitalented singer, composer, writer and politician. Kinky for President!!!

4 out of 5 stars Interesting, Funny, and Worth It.......2006-12-04

Back in the 1970's I used to go see Kinky Friedman and his Texas Jewboys at the Lone Star Café in New York City. He was a pretty entertaining performer. Let's face it, Kinky Friedman can't really sing for beans, but he is one hell of an interesting, funny, and politically interesting songwriter (he was also recently seriously in the race for the governorship of Texas) and there is something appealing about his voice.

Kinky's songs are much like the film Borat (come to think of it Kinky looks a little like Sascha Baron Cohen): you're not always quite sure what he intends, and the lyrics can be pretty offensive, but, they are also funny as hell. Examples: "Waitret [waitress] please waitret come sit on my fate." Or The Ballad of Charles Whitman, a comedy song about Charles Joseph Whitman, the Texas Tower Sniper who in 1966 killed 15 people and wounded 31 "all the while he smiled so sweetly then he blew them out completely...he was settin' up there with his 36 magnum, laughing wildly as he bagged `em." Then again, there is also Sold American, which is about...well, I'm not quite sure what it's about, but it is actually a lovely song.

If you don't know Kinky and his work, then this is a great place to start, and if you do, then this fairly complete collection will bring back a lot of (hopefully good) memories from the 70s.

5 out of 5 stars Doesn't get any Kinkier than this!.......2006-09-13

Kinky Friedman is a Lone Star treasure. Heck, make that a national treasure. For decades he's written and recorded alternately touching and hilarious country songs that marry traditional country musical values with a uniquely skewed lyrical vision. Lots of country singers claim to be rugged individualists, but Kinky is one singer-songwriter who truly stands apart from the pack.

If you're a long-term fan--and your're in good company, with fans like Willie Nelson, Dwight Yoakam, and Lyle Lovett having covered his songs--you'll find that this collection will bring back a lot of great memories--and laughs.

If you're new to Kinky, this CD is the best entree to his very special world.

5 out of 5 stars EASTWOOD IS ALSO A GREAT SONGWRITER.......2007-06-11

This is a "semi" career spanning CD (and the only decent one in existence) of the movie themes from some great Eastwood movies. The earlier pieces are from his days in TV and transition to movies. The more mature work with Lennie Niehaus displays Clint's artistry, no not only as an actor, award winning director, but great composer. My only complaint is the disc is missing the off-beat and totally original jazzy "Just A Closer Walk With Thee" from THE GAUNTLET.

The disc does contain his wonderful A PERFECT WORLD and THE UNFORGIVEN. Why Eastwood never won an Oscar for some of his original scores is a mystery to me. He is more celebrated as a director than as an actor only because he won more awards in that category and his acting style was known for it's low-keyed and reactionary style. But the Clint Eastwood the musician cannot be dismissed and here is that more than proves his versatility. A known jazz lover, for fans of that genre, give a listen to WHY SHOULD I CARE from "True Crime", another great Eastwood composition.

The remainder of the disc is a salute to Eastwood and his work with a heavy emphasis on the jazz.

First rate. I've been a fan since his directoral debut in PLAY MISTY FOR ME. Little did I realize what a great composer he would turn out to be.

A must for any fans as there are no single soundtacks available from his movies featuring his work.

5 out of 5 stars Play Misty For Me.......2005-12-20

Nearly an hour and 20 minutes of "Music For the Movies of Clint Eastwood". What fan wouldn't be happy with this CD? 23 Tracks, and a great compilation. From the early TV days, the "Theme from Rawhide"(this was about the time I fell in love with Clint, I think I was about 8)performed by Frankie Lane, and Spaghetti Western, the "The, Good, The Bad, and The Ugly"(does anyone REALLY know the words to this one, and does it really matter?)to the romantic Doe Eyes"(the love theme from "Bridges of Madison County", the music will have you reliving the great moments from great films that just say Clint!

The first half of the album features both Clint's own works and the fabulous talented composers he has worked with. Ennio Moricone's oh so recognizable style("The Good, The Bad and the Ugly"), the moving music of Lennie Niehaus("Pale Rider"), the haunting sounds from Lalo Schfrin("Dirty Harry Theme", where you will relive Clint doing the, "Do you feel lucky punk?" speech), and some other wonderful musicians including the great Civil War and Western sounding "Theme from Outlaw Josey Wales", by Jerry Fielding, and Erroll Garner's"Play Misty For Me", a gorgeous piano rendition. Some of Clint's own works, included are "Claudia's Theme" from "Unforgiven" "Kate's Theme" from "Absolute Power", "Big Fran's Baby" from "A Perfect World", and of course the mesmerizing and above mentioned "Doe Eyes".

Second half is a 10 part instrumental suite, "Clint Eastwood, An American Filmmaker Suite". This is music composed and conducted by Lennie Niehaus for the PBS "American Masters" documentary " Eastwood: Out of the Shadows" The music tells Clint's story musically, and it flows beautifully and emotionally. It has a little of everyting, including some great jazzy numbers. The orchestration and the musicians capture the journey wonderfully. For list of all 23 track titles, see buying info. You can also listen to samples from there.

The quality of the CD is excellent. A pamphlet with some production notes, and the tracks is included. There are some great pix of Clint as well. It doesn't have ALL his films included. Hopefully the music form "Kelly's Heroes"("Burning Bridges) and "The Beguiled"(more from Lalo Schifrin) will make the sequel album!

Take it in your car and listen to it when you are stuck in traffic, and it will take you somewhere else for a while.Just say "Play Misty For Me" and hit track 8. Highly recommended for the Eastwood fan. And for those that can't get enough, I would also recommend the soundtrack to "Bridges of Madison County". One of the most romantic albums I ever heard.

"Head 'Em Up, Move 'Em On....Keep Them Doggies Rollin...Rawhide!"

Enjoy....Laurie

4 out of 5 stars "Go ahead, make your day!".......2004-06-21

There's really not too much to say about this, except that any big fan of "Clint Eastwood", or at least the majority of these movies should like this. What I enjoy most are the tracks from his westerns, as they all set a nice mood, but the rest are very good as well. I can't help but think this would have been twice as good had it contained dialogue from each of these films too. Overall a great collection for the fan. After all, if there's one thing "Clint" knows about as much as his acting, it's his music.

I got this for my dad because Don Rich(Buck Owens guitar player) plays on 2 or 3 tracks. He loves the cd.

5 out of 5 stars I like Arlo..........2005-10-12

I like Arlo. After first hearing him 30 years ago I still put him on in the morning with my coffee. He is one of those artists that I buy over again when a new format comes in style (such as LP verses CD). I have never listened to any of his albums (no matter how many times) without either laughing, crying, singing along, dancing, or feeling that I have learned something new about humanity. I like him just as much and more than most artists I listen to. That includes Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Wilco, Modest Mouse, Neal Young, Ben Harper, Nine Inch Nails, The wallflowers, Radio Head, Ten Years After, The Beach Boys, Johnny Cash, Kieth Urban, and so on. This album is a great one -- I cannot put this on my player without singing along from the beginning to the end. If you like folk music Arlo is the modern master. He's a humble man and a great artist.

I first heard this album in the 70's, and thought it was great then, now I think it's even better.
