Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

1 out of 5 stars Bait and Switch.......2007-06-27

This album claims to be the best of Bad Company, but it cannot be the `Best of' without Paul Rodgers, in fact Bad Company is not Bad Company without him. Make sure you read all the details of this album before making the purchase. I had to send it back!

2 out of 5 stars SAD COMPANY.......2005-12-13

A misnomer is what you're getting here. Paul Rodgers put the "Bad" in Bad Co. with his earthbound, grit-rimmed vocals and climactic lyrical ad-libbing, but once replaced (and I use that term VERY loosely) by pedestrian singer Brian Howe, their shooting star fizzled. This concert cash-in on hits old and new is also minus the rock-steady bottom of bassist Boz Burrell, but Rodgers is the key omission. Better to check out the recent live Bad Co. offering MERCHANTS OF FORTUNE, still featuring only half the original members, but at least one is ex-Free wailer Rodgers. On WHAT YOU HEAR IS WHAT YOU GET, early Bad Co. classics FEEL LIKE MAKIN' LOVE and ROCK 'N ROLL FANTASY still rule over latter day fluff HOW ABOUT THAT and NO SMOKE WITHOUT FIRE, demonstrating how their songwriting also suffered after Paul's exit. As far as classic rock is concerned, this lifeless concert attempt will put you in pretty bad company. RATING: TWO THUDS

3 out of 5 stars Whatever!.......2005-06-11

If you're an original BadCo fan....yeah....then this is probably not for you, but please......Brain Howe made his own mark and if you can't appreciate that.....you're NO rock fan in anyway.....shape or form!! PERIOD! ......while this doesn't feature Paul Rodgers the rest of the lineup IS BadCO......and they do an excellent job of taking fans on the ride that they were on at that particulart time in thier career! Mick Ralphs sounds great and shows that he can change and stay afloat at a time when there really wasn't much by way of Classic Rockers out there! Simon Kirke is steady as well......so if you like live concerts and classic rock......then sip a few gin and tonics and appreciate this for what it is...classic rockers trying to give their fans some music and still make a living enjoying what God let them do the best while they go through life! Spread the music!

1 out of 5 stars Terrible CD.......2005-02-11

I bought this CD, listened to it once and threw it away. Brian Howe is no Paul Rodgers. The vocals are awful, only slightly better than the mastering. This CD is a travesty. If I could give it 0 stars I would.

3 out of 5 stars Bad Company-'The Best Of Bad Company Live.....'(Atlantic).......2004-12-11

By the time this CD was released, vocalist Brian Howe had been with the band for eight(8)years so it's a bit easier to at least 'sort of' accept Bad Company the way they are.I saw Howe with Bad Co. twice and this is pretty much a typical live album.More recent tracks here include "How About That","Here Comes Trouble","Take This Town" and "If You Needed Somebody".For some reason, these tunes seem to grow on you, probably because guitarist Mick Ralphs is STILL able to pen out good songs. The older/vintage Bad Co. cuts are nicely done, considering.Like "Ready For Love","Rock&Roll Fantasy","Shooting Star",their signature love song "Feel Like Making Love"(show me a female that doesn't like this song),"Movin' On","Good Lovin' Gone Bad" and "Can't Get Enough".My only complaint is that "Shake It Up" isn't on here.Nice cover, though.

More comedy monologue than musical performance, Bea Arthur's one-woman show Bea Arthur on Broadway: Just Between Friends collects memories from the silver-haired star's life on Broadway (Fiddler on the Roof, Mame, The Threepenny Opera) and television (Maude, The Golden Girls).

"I wanted to see if I had the guts to just come and be myself," Arthur says in this performance recorded in front of a live audience in December 2001. Alongside co-creator and pianist Billy Goldenberg, she offers wry and often funny anecdotes about her career and the people she's worked with (Angela Lansbury, Pia Zadora). When she does sing ... well, even decades ago Arthur didn't have a beautiful voice, but she's well-suited to the comedy songs. And her versions of Kurt Weill's "Pirate Jenny" and Goldenberg's own "Fifty Percent"--while they won't make anyone forget Lotte Lenya or Dorothy Loudon--are effective in their own right. Bea Arthur on Broadway is definitely more Bea than Broadway, but it's a career well worth remembering. --David Horiuchi

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars And Then There's BEA!.......2007-01-20

Thank goodness this is available on CD. I saw the show twice in Manhattan and once in P-town MA. She is an American treasure. What's nice is that you don't need to have had seen the live performance to enjoy this CD. (Though I'd love to have it on DVD.) Just Bea, Billy, a piano and yet so much more!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Golden Girl Shines Brightly.......2005-10-21

For anyone who has ever laughed as Bea Arthur deftly put people in their place with her lightning quick wit as Dorothy on the "Golden Girls", they will not be disappointed with this CD. Arthur, some 9 years after leaving the small screen, returns triumphantly to her professional roots, the stage, and does not disappoint. Mixing antedotal stories with classic songs, all to the accompianment of Billy Goldenburg, Arthur weaves her life in a brillant 90 minute tapestry so that the listener regrets ever reaching the end. Anyone who has ever seen Arthur perform on stage, or as Maude or Dorothy, they will not regret purchasing this CD. For that rare minority of people who have not have the privilage of seeing Arthur previously should find out what they have been missing of this American icon.

5 out of 5 stars Alive and Unforgettable.......2004-11-21

Bea Arthur. Nearing 80. And yet, her continuing vitality is blatantly obvious in this live recording. I will tell you this--I bought this disc with no expectations whatsoever. I like Golden Girls as much as the next chap, and I was slightly curious about what Bea had become.

The simple truth was that I was stunned. Completely stunned. Again, this sounds as the same, alive, malicious woman who portrayed those "affirmative women" on TV (per her own words). She mocks her own voice, recalling the humiliation of being mistaken for the man of the house through the phone ... and some--who buy this disk with the intent of getting a faultless musical performance--might agree (and according to some reviews her, HAVE agreed) that her voice is perhaps too deep, too cutting, not pure enough. But this is NOT (and I stress it) a musical performance per se, it is not a perfectly rounded voice singing perfect standards.

What this disc is? A drama performance. The songs are intermissed with speech interludes, during which Bea narrates anecdotes from her past experience as an actress--and that's is PRECISELY what is MAGIC. You feel as though she's inviting you to witness the high points of her life, and it's a very nice place. The songs, seem alive as rarely before, because they are performed. She renders them with life, and make the most of her abilities.

I really appreciated some of the smaller things. You get to recognize her trademark, slightly embarassed, `You know' ... She'll make you laugh with good natured reminiscence ("A Mother's Ingenuity"!); some of the songs are delightfully imperfect, (I learned to love the half-sung/half-spoken "What Do You Start" ...), some others are wonderfully dynamic ("What Can You Get a Nudist For Her Birthday?", "Threepenny Opera/Pirate Jenny" ...), but all are very enjoyable ...

Be it "Isn't He Adorable?" or "If I Can't Sell It, I'll Keep Sittin' on It" ... every track on this disc will have you fondly reminisce or curiously discover the career of one helluva woman.

You really can't be disappointed. I promise.

If only we could have a visual as well!

5 out of 5 stars A trip down memory lane..........2003-10-19

Bea Arthur, one of the finest performers of her time.
Bea is most known for her role on the sitcoms Golden Girls and Maude, but she's done so much theater work as well.
She was in the cast of the original U.S production of "Threepenny Opera" starring Lotta Lenya, and in the original cast of "Fiddler On The Roof" and "Mame". But Bea started her theater career in a show called "The Shoestring Revue".
Bea stoled the scene every night when she performed as yente the Matcmaker on "Fiddler On The Roof" and she also got a hole lot of response as Vera Charles on "Mame", starring Angela Lansbury. In this live performence Bea performs a collection of songs chosen by herself, such as, "Let's Face The Music And Dance", "Isn't He Adorable", "Fifty Percent" and her theme song from Mame "The Man In The Moon". Bea is absolutely one of our time finest performers, with her witty sence of knowledge and her indefiable voice she has establised herself as a broadway legend, alongside Judy Garland, Elaine Stritch, Mary Martin. She is one of the last broadway female legends alive. And still going strong, Bea is rounding 80, but you wouldn't notice.
Do yourself a favour and take a trip down down memory lane, it's your chance to hang out with the last female broadway legend around.

5 out of 5 stars A Truly Remarkable Accomplishment.......2003-06-16

As a huge fan of Bea Arthur's, I was very excited when I heard she would return to Broadway to do a one-woman show. Not since winning the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for "Mame" has Bea Arthur been on stage. Well, what a way to follow up! This cd (which was recorded during a live performance) Bea gives fans an intimate look into her show business life. The stories are very funny and touching, and the songs (which Bea picked out herself) are fun, beautiful, and magical. A favorite part of this cd for me, is when Bea talks about her days on TV. She was the star of two very successful and groundbreaking sitcoms, "Maude" and "The Golden Girls" I am a huge fan of "The Golden Girls" and Bea's character Dorothy was always my favorite. This cd is a must for any Bea Arthur fan, but the appeal of this amazing show goes beyond her hardcore fans. Any fan of classic Broadway and cabaret songs will love this cd. This is one of the favorite cds I own, and should be treasured by more people. And finally, as a sidenote, Bea's one-woman show was nominated for a Tony Award in 2001 in the category of Best Special Theatrical Event.

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive Ike and Tina Turner album!!!.......2007-08-02

This is the album that a trillion years ago got me hooked on the Ike and Tina Turner review. The other reviewers say it all, but I will add that no other live album that I am aware of comes close to capturing such power and excitement. This album is what soul, R & B, and rock and roll are all about.

5 out of 5 stars Must replace my vinyl..........2006-12-10

I have the old vinyl to this CD so I put my order in. Now I won't have to flip it over to hear the other side! (lol) I liked a few songs by Ike and Tina as well as by Tina herself. However, this album is probably my favorite. The other reviews said it all so well...so I'll keep it short. It's just hard not to feel the energy they put out on this one. Truly is a MUST have!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Essential.......2006-02-14

This ranks up there with James Brown's "Live At The Apollo" as one of the greatest R&B concert documents. If you're worried (as I was) about whether playing at Carnegie Hall might have caused Ike and Tina to tone down their performance, fear not. This set absolutely sizzles.

I've read some criticism that the opening intros and performances by the Ikettes diminishes the impact of the album. I totally disagree. These opening performances give Ike and the Kings Of Rythm the opportunity to show off what a crack band they are, without being overshadowed by Tina. Ike is a superb guitarist and bandleader - I especially like Socow Richardson's drumming. The Ikette's performances are very good but wouldn't carry a whole album. But this allows you to share with the audience the anticipation of Tina's first appearance on stage, whipping the place into a frenzy. By the time she belts her first line "Do you like good music?", almost ten minutes into the CD, it comes across more as a proclamation than a question.

From the moment Tina first appears to the end of the CD, the energy level never lets up. All of the songs are covers but so what? Tina reinterprets them and makes each song her own. (Nobody would ever confuse this version of "Proud Mary" with the original by CCR). It might take guts to take on "Respect" after the legendary version cut by Aretha. But Tina doesn't try to redo Aretha's version, she completely makes the song her own, and does so highly successfully.

The fidelity of this remastered recording is exceptional. The sound is pure and natural, extremely well recorded and mixed. Crank it up and you feel like you're right there at Carnegie Hall.

If you only own a handful of R&B albums from the early 70s, this has to be one of them.

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps the greatest live album of all time..........2002-03-05

It's already been documented. Yes, we know that they had a stormy personal relationship, but often overshadowed by Tina's recent revelations of spousal abuse is the music. Though they had relatively few hits (only 6 Top 40 hits, and 25 R&B hits over a span of 16 years) onstage it was a completely different story. The Ike and Tina Turner Revue was the most explosive touring spectacle. Fronted by Tina, often referred to as the female James Brown and the human bombshell, and backed by Ike, The Ikettes and the Kings of Rhythm, the Revue toured constantly and on April 1, 1971 they found themselves about to make history at Carnegie Hall.

The disc opens with intros to the band, the Ikettes and Ike himself, yet as one would come to expect, the cd begins to burn up as Tina roars onto the stage. She instantly takes command of the audience with her incendiary vocals and spellbinding gyrations. They burn through covers of Jessie Hill's "Ooh Poo Pah Doo", and the Rolling Stones' "Honky Tonk Woman" a song which Tina did make her own. The show continues on with a remarkable performance of "A Love Like Yours" on which Tina's emotional depth and heartfelt singing (even if not to Ike really in hindsight) truly shine. Yet the ultimate showstopper arrives with the inception of "Proud Mary" their Grammy winning cover of the John Fogerty penned classic. Tina begins the song with her now famous locution that helped Ike and Tina to own this song. "We never, ever do nothin' nice and easy" she proclaims to uproarious approval. "We always do it nice and rough!" Then both Ike and Tina begin to sing the opening to the song just as they said they would, easy at first, then Tina launches into the wild and raunchy part of the song for eleven minutes and forty-two seconds of the finest rock and soul ever to rock Carnegie Hall. To follow is a marvelous blues performance of Don Robey's "I Smell Trouble" and Tina's fine performance convinces you of every word. Ike, not to be left out should be noted for his fine guitar playing. A cover of Sly and the Family Stone's "I Want To Take You Higher" comes across very well on the stage, and perhaps it was startling to Sly as Ike and Tina's version charted "higher" on the charts. The final climax to the show however, is the wildly rauchy, dirty, yet fun rendition of "I've Been Loving You Too Long". Complete with simulated orgasms and stroking of microphones, this song wows the Carnegie Hall audience and you can hear the ovations and approval of the crowd as Ike and Tina live up to their reputation as live performers of the first rate.

If one can listen to the music without bias, it can be seen that this performance by Ike and Tina Turner is one of the best live albums of all time. Onstage they were at their best, and what you hear is definitely what you get!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Guitar jazz at its finest.......2004-08-09

I had the pleasure of seeing Melvin Sparks for the first time as an opening act for Derek Trucks, and was totally overwhelmed. Smooth, fluid licks flow from his fingers and create some of the most memorable jazz tracks I've heard in recent years. The combination of his catchy guitar playing, along with some awesome B3'ing, alto sax, and drums makes for a very powerful album.
Highlights of this album include The Governor (you can catch that one live if you see him every now and again), Matter of Time, Another Joe, and the album closer (my personal favorite) Breeze. If you're a big fan of guitar along the styles of Joe Pass, you'll love Melvin Sparks.
