Everybody knows that Quincy Jones is the world's greatest pop producer, but if you're under 30, you might not know about his jazz work with Lionel Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie, and Frank Sinatra. This brilliant 1969 disc combines the precision music making you'd find on a movie soundtrack with the lively blowing of a soul-jazz jam session. Of course, when Q calls, people come to play, and this date is chock full of stars. On the title track, vocalist Valerie Simpson (of Ashford & Simpson) graces Ray Brown's deep-bottomed bass lines with an airy alto, topped by Hubert Laws's fluent flute work and Rahsaan Roland Kirk's multisax solo. Jones's spirited take on the gospel standard "Oh, Happy Day" retains the Sunday soul vibe of Ray Charles, and "Dead End" rolls with an urbanized juke-joint vibe. Jones's arrangement of Benny Golson's "Killer Joe" is a classic, with trumpeter Freddie Hubbard's bravura solo lent nuance by Jones's magic touch. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Walking In Space.......2006-07-06
This was my first exposure to jazz in the 70's. Sounds much better on CD.
A reference album of modern big band in the 60s.......2006-02-18
Where to begin? Let me try with my dear track, Johnny Mandel's theme from 'That Cold Day in The Park', here under the title 'I Never Told You', here with such beautiful lines by Toots Thielemens.
There's also Benny Golson's 'Killer Joe', really a killer with Freddie Hubbard on trumpet and Hubert Laws on flute.
Such definitive arrangements, a treasure forever.
Outstanding CD from the 60s.......2006-01-22
Seems that the older I get, the more likely I am to buy music I listened to in the 60s and 70s. Q's Walking in Space was one of the first jazz records I listened to, on 8-track tape. It was then, and always has been one of my very favorite jazz recordings. Highly recommended!
A Great Recording! Joy Joy! Buy Now!!!.......2006-01-19
The best of the early 70's deluge of renditions of the music from HAIR, gorgeous arranging underpins this showcase for so much fine playing. While the music from Hair was a trendy keg to tap for artists who had their best work behind them by the early 70's, Jones the arranger's honest and uncluttered treatment of the idiosyncratic, unformulaic songs covered here makes this a supremely delicious recording.
Jones masterly ear for harmonic hues and the relentlessly spirited swinging performances of the band kick this record into my "classic" pantheon of jazz records. It's that good, People.
Killer Joe's definative recording finds its perfect tempo, the chorus building on mahogany rich chord voicings. The title track is a heady 14 minute jazz-trip (a 1970 thing, man) with playful, melodic, hard-swinging solos (after a few listens you'll be humming along with them) from flute master Hubert Laws and sax giant Rahsaan Roland Kirk.
The rhythm section bounces gleefully all over this record and the vividly crystal analog recording captures the exquisite horn textures and crackling rim shots with thrilling results. Somewhere in the space between granite-solid mainstream jazz and inventive late 60's pop this stands as a really good rekerd.
This record is over 13 years of age. Thank You.
Essential.......2005-02-08
This is worth the price. A great classic from the man himself. Mr. Quincy Jones aka "The Dude", "The Q", you name it. He's such a pionner to me when he put out albums that means something to the world. I would luv 4 him to come back and do another one sometime in the near future. The last album I heard from him was "Basie and Beyond" which was put out in 2000. But long story short, if u're involved in the centuries of jazz today: Gil Evans and Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington, GRP All-Star Big Band, Al Hirt, Sonny Rollins, Lee Morgan, Count Basie, Oliver Nelson, Jimmy Smith, Wes Montgomery, Grover Washington, The Crusaders, Freddie Hubbard, among others. You gotta have this CD. 'Cuz it features the cut "Killer Joe" which I like. All of it is good. Just can't wait until I pick it up. Highly recommended.

A copy in every household . . ........2003-02-09
This disc is so chock-full of classic scores from classic films that every movie-and-music lover should own a copy. Thanks to Robert Townson for producing this collection and the entire Varese film score catalog. My favorite tracks from this disc are "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf"; "Star Trek: The Motion Picture"; and "Midway".
A sampler feat. some of the greatest film scores in history........2001-09-06
Words cannot convey what a collection like this means to a film music collector such as myself. Varese Saraband has been releasing quality film scores and music for the last 20 plus years. My vinyl and CD collections burst with so much great stuff from Varese. One day I was looking in the bins of my local record store and noticed this little gem of a collection. I looked at it and saw a virtual cornucopia of the great film score cues for only $ (and 2 discs). So I purchased it and opened it up. Much to my surprise, the booklet is chock full of information about each scoring session and pictures to boot. I also learned more about some of these wonderful pieces as well. Well thanks to Mr. Townson and this nice collection, I plan to purchase some of the recordings these cues were released on since I don't own classics like Viva Zapata, Alex North's 2001, Superman (not the Varese version, I do have the other release), and Patton. Guess I will have to save a few pennies, but it will be worth it. I recommend this collection to anybody who wants to discover and learn about the history of film music. I also think it's a great listen from the first song to the last on both discs. My compliments to Varese on a great collection of classics (and keeping it under $).
"the man behind Varese Sarabande ~ Robert Townson".......2001-04-06
The music that this label releases is without a doubt in a class by themselves, always perfection. Here we have the 500th CD release from ~ "The Man Behind The Music" ~ Mr. Robert Townson. So much care is taken with each album, that you feel you are witnessing the birth of a newborn baby, and that may be just what it is.
For those of us who buy each album ~ people who work to create them ~ the artwork ~ musicians ~ and a list of some of the most talented composers and conductors ~ John Barry, Elmer Bernstein, John Debney, Georges Delerue, Cliff Eidelman, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, Michael Lang, Henry Mancini, Joel McNeely, Alfred Newman, Alex North, Miklos Rozsa, Dimitri Shostakovich, Frederic Talgorn, Franz Waxman, Rick Wentworth and John Williams ~ and as always the sound quality and performances by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Seattle Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra and National Philharmonic Orchestra is dynamically flawless and simply superb.
This economically priced 2-CD-Set ~ pure film score sampling ~ is worth it's weight in gold. One should not have a favorite from this vast collection, but if asked ~ it would be "TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD" (1962) composer Elmer Bernstein took it to the limit and beyond, the story-line, cast and score was the perfect marriage.
A big, big thank you to ~ Matthew Joseph Peak (cover/session photography) ~ Jonathan Allen, Geoff Foster, Bernie Kirsh, Mike Ross, Mike Sheady and Al Swanson (recording engineers) ~ Rich Breen (mastering engineer) ~ and for the extensive 28 page liner-note booklet featuring "behind the scenes" memories of these past 500 albums, may we look forward to future classics on the next 500 CD's from producer...ROBERT TOWNSON!
Total Time: Disc One 71:20 on 19 Tracks & Disc Two 71:24 on 17 Tracks...Varese Sarabande 302 066 225 2...(2001)

Jazz for Hippies!.......1999-04-29
The Acid Jazz crowd may want to check out this disc when searching for older grooves. The music is smooth, mellow, and downright trippy - not surprising when one realizes that half the tunes are from the hippie musical "Hair". The sounds may seem dated to some, but are alternately haunting and finger-snapping. All the while they'll work their way into your subconscious and get stuck there, so you'll find yourself reaching for this disc again and again...
It was so cool.......1998-12-23
IT was shocking brilliant for the era.and no one can match Nancy Wilson voice-as she grace the album.(parts of it will take your breath away)

quincy jones used to be a jazzer-this CD proves it!.......2000-12-05
Although most know Quincy Jones as a pop music producer of limited merit (michael jackson, et. al), he began his career working with such seminal figures as Ray Charles and Count Basie. I first heard the cut 'killer joe' from this recording as a theme song by a local jazz d.j. who also used to play the title track 'walking in space' quite a bit. Well, this recording features a who's who of jazz soloists like Freddie Hubbard and Hubert Laws (reminicent of the better CTI albums of the late 70s early 80s) along with stalwarts like the under-rated late guitarist Eric Gale, who gets extensive solo space here. But most unusual (and definitely happening!) is the guest appearance by none other than Rahsaan Roland Kirk (!) playing saxophones on the title track. If you like cool arrangements, major swinging grooves (courtesy of bassist Ray Brown, who absolutely burns throughout, and impeccible drummer Grady Tate), great solos, atmospheric female backing vocals (title track), a great version of a true jazz standard (the aforementioned 'killer joe'), this CD is right for you. I used to have this on vinyl and found the CD version by chance here at amazon.com. At this price you can't go wrong. ENJOY!
