4 out of 5 stars Great Stoner Rock-Blues.......2006-06-18

I agree witth the proceeding review. This is an excellent album, and the production is surprisingly great for a live set. Doraldina's Prophecies will blow you away if you haven't heard it yet. Here in Missoula, Mt used copies of it are selling for 1.99 at Hastings. If you have a Hastings go there and buy it!

4 out of 5 stars One loud night at the Viper Room.......2004-03-11

The loud and mysterious Masters of Reality resurface with this 1997 live set, mostly a mix of tunes from their first and second albums. Though Ginger Baker's not here (and wouldn't that have been a treat?) to dress up the songs from "Sunrise on the Sufferbus," there's lots to recommend. "Blue Garden," "Doraldina's Prophecies" and "John Brown" are great, the album's production is flawless, and Scott Weiland stops by the vocal mic on his way back from the bar. (Weird, but it works.) This band really created its own niche in the early 90s, and the album deserves better than it got -- that is, no promotion whatever. Then again, each Masters release has been on a different label (this one seems to be on "Malicious Vinyl"), only adding to Chris Goss and the Masters' mysterious career. So it's no surprise that this is out of print currently, but it's a real find if you're a fan.

4 out of 5 stars Not a Classic...But Definitely A Keeper.......2005-11-14

I am giving this album 4 stars because it has managed to hold up over the years. When I initially purchased it back in 1998? I would have rated it as a 3.5.

Sleepy Brown and Organized Noize struck out on their own path with this album...and gives you a taste of that Down South "Campbleton Road to the SWATS" Soul they do so well.

There are moments of sheer brilliance on this album like "Choked Out Saturday Night" and the instrumental "Coversation" (which, honestly? Sounds like Liquid Funk Concentrate!!)...and even the filler cuts like "Grind ON" are listenable.

The reason why I haven't given this a higer rating is because the sound gets to be a tad bit monotonous towards the end. But as a whole? This is an album that any Organized Noize and/or Soul Lover should own.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Essential.......2005-11-09

I bought this on the strength cuz of a review in Rap Pages- from the moment i put it in, i was hooked. It's Sleepy Brown from the unf#ckwittable Dungeon Family and you will be glad you found it.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Album everyone should have!.......2004-05-21

Sleepy Brown is the man known for his crooning on various Dungeon Family projects. Pick up any DF release and Sleepy Brown is definitely found on that album. Also now widely referred to as the "Down South Nate Dogg", Sleepy showed in 98 that he had the skills for a solo project. Every song on this album has a 'vibe'. A big band in the background and real instrumentation along with thumping bass and unique singing made this album an instant dirty south classic. Organized Noize and the Dungeon Family only gives us the quality anyway...it's become standard for them. But Vinyl Room has risen above the usual expectations and standards. The album almost has a 'blunted' feel too it with its thick southern sound. Every song is a classic. From the excellent horns in 'Grind On' to the wonderful horn solo in 'Choked Out Saturday Nite' to the drums of Curse On You, this album is an all night jam. The smoky baby maker Private Party is an 8 minute opus. Every song is infectious and memorable. Sleepy Brown sounds like a new school Curtis Mayfield on some of these songs. The only problem I seem to have are the useless skits...they definitely mess up the flow of a great album, but since the quality of the album is so good they can be overlooked(not easily though). Overall Vinyl Room is definitely a must have if you consider yourself a fan of good soul music. Don't Sleep!

5 out of 5 stars sjakes.......2003-09-24

I'm surprised that cd of this caliber does not have more exposure. I hunted it down after hearing a piece of the cut, "Grind On" on another cd. Took me 9 months to get it (seconhand)but I'm glad I didn't give up the search. It's an allround pleaser. Sleepy has real skills!!!! With lyrics that are sad, romantic, and funny...you will not be bored.
But how can I tell you about the MUSIC..the stuff is lush!!! For the 70's folks you'll be crawlin' down memory lane with this one. If you liked TSOP and MFSB you sho' gon' luh dis heah !!!!

4 out of 5 stars Off the Hook.......2003-04-22

This CD is sweet. Sleepy's theme and all those associated with this camp i.e. OutKast, Dugeon Family, Goodie Mob, all have nice laid back southern funk beats. The only thing that keeps this album from getting a full 5 stars is the little silly interludes. I didn't feel that they added anything to the album. The music is on point though from beginning to end. These guys will probably never make it big and that is what will keep there music soooo fresh and soooo clean. Buy this with no regrets.

      Product Description

When Mustard's Retreat recorded their first album in 1979, they were two young guys fresh out of college from a place called Michigan. They were favored at folk festivals across America in a time known to history as "The Folk Revival." The music that pulsed in the veins of Michael Hough and David Tamulevich was reaching mainstream audiences. Their peers were Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Simon & Garfunkel. Their influences were The Kingston Trio and Peter, Paul & Mary. "The First Album Plus" is a re-release of material from that period in Mustard's Retreat history. It is an authentic snapshot in time of an important 1970s folk music duo.
