Good Blend.......2007-05-17
If you are trying to decide between this recording and "Cloudburst," pick this one. The female voices do not have that shrieking quality that they do on "Cloudburst" and the soprano soloist from the BYU Singers is fantastic.
I do prefer the faster pacing of some of the pieces on the "Cludburst" recording, but this one is better all around.
My Favorite Choral Composer.......2007-03-09
Taken as a whole, Eric Whitacre is my favorite choral composer. I have to listen to his music at least once a week. As far as student choirs go, BYU does a stunning job for the most part. The few minor mistakes do not detract from the music. This is an essential album in my book.
whitacre.......2007-01-25
I bought this CD because it included the piece "Lux aurumque", which I feel must have been inspired because it transforms the listener into another realm. The other pieces are well done, too, but none reach me in the same way as "Lux aurumque". I love the tight overlapping harmonies and suspensions.
Choral excellence.......2007-01-07
I asked for, and received, this recording for Christmas based on the excellence of prior BYU performances and having really enjoyed performing Cloudburst in the past. This recording does not disappoint. It excels on every level. The choral writing is compelling and the performance of the BYU Singers is simply amazing. I've been around choral singing for many, many, years and the level of achievement here is stunning. Based solely on hearing recordings and seeing their recorded concerts on PBS, I would recommend anything from the BYU choral department.
Spine tingling.......2006-12-29
I was VERY suprised to hear this kind of sound from a college choir! The blend of the choir and the emotion behind the music is enough to give anyone goosebumps. From the soaring harmonies of "Water Night" to the subdued tenderness of "Sleep" to the playfulness of "Leonardo" this disc has something for everyone. A guaranteed Best Buy!

Customer Reviews:
GREAT CD OF INSPIRATIONAL MUSIC.......2007-07-04
I ordered this CD to get one song,"We Shall Behold Him",and was blown away by the two CD's. Sandi Patty has always been a favorite of mine but I have not heard many of the songs on these CD's. The old favorites are done with arrangements that give you goose bumps. And of course when I ordered this from Amazon I never knew I would get it so quickly. Thanks Amazon.
Extra bonus CD.......2007-03-10
Contains two CDs, both are great.... I can't decide which is my favorite. This is the best of Sandy Patti singing great hymns I grew up on and a few newer tunes. You will not be disappointed in her song selections and, as always, her fabulous voice which touches your heart and soul.
Spectacular!.......2006-12-11
Sandi's voice has never been better! It is so clear and warm and rich. Just lovely. And sincere. The songs chosen for this CD set are absolutely perfect. If you are a Sandi Patty fan, of course you will love this album. But even if you just enjoy a beautiful soprano voice and inspirational music, you can't go wrong with any of her CDs.
I just saw her Christmas concert the other night, and all I can say is "Wow!". She is even more incredible in person, if that's possible.
Hymns of Faith: Songs of Inspiration .......2006-08-25
I love Sandi Patty. As for the cd when I first got it. It wouldn't play after the first song. I have a cd repair kit and tried that. Now it works fine.
Awesome!!! Great !!! You should buy this!!!RECOMMENDED!!.......2006-07-09

Groundbreaking Album & Still Relevant.......2007-04-17
It is amazing to listen to this album from 1993 and see how truly current it still is....this album features every dimension of the Depeche Mode sound, from haunting orchestrations to soul-searching lyrics and vocals to straight forward modern music with catchy beats & melodies....
In a time where every so-called artist sounds the same and is manufactured for quick release at your local Wal-Mart or other big box, bands like Depeche Mode stand as a lone voice in the wilderness of so much crap. People think they know "modern/alternative music"? HA! Depeche Mode invented it and they continue to re-invent....Songs of Faith and Devotion is a classic....best tracks include "Walking in My Shoes", "In Your Room", "Get Right With Me", "One Caress", etc....
Possibly the best DM?.......2007-03-18
I think so. Perhaps it is because I prefer their rock/rock acoustic side in comparison with their pure new wave sounds, still, even some of their hardcore fans recognise SOFAD as Depeche Mode's most interesting/ intriguing work.
The album contains some of their best songs and my personal favourites, such as 'I feel you', 'Walking in my shoes' and, undoubtedly, 'In Your Room' (by the way, guys, where was 'In Your Room' in your Best Of? - oh well, it was volume I, I hope it will be included in vol. II maybe?). Its dark ambience and melancholic tunes (I would say melancholic rather than depressing)are almost hypnotizing, and David Gahan's voice suits this album more than any other.
Even if you are not familiar with DM's work, this is a great chance to discover them - a much better opportunity than their Best Of - Vol. 1 release. This album is good even for an agnostic atheist like myself.
An audio journey into new lands of spirituality and darkness.......2007-02-21
A bold - and to many listeners, shocking - venture into the transition of musical frontiers, from a band already renowned for a seemingly very different genre, Depeche Mode's Songs of Faith and Devotion hit the music world like a proverbial earthquake upon its initial release in 1993.
Some fans rejoiced, others fulminated, and many more were for the most part just plain confused, as the line between the band's former (and considered to be, signature) style of music and that of more traditional rock seemed to blur for a moment.
To say, however, that Songs of Faith and Devotion is simply Depeche Mode's experimental crossover into a more rock-oriented genre would be both an injustice and an understatement. At closer listening, one begins to realize that this album is not about Depeche Mode becoming a rock group; rather, it is about the band's artistic journey into new lands of spirituality and darkness, touching upon subjects of a more noetic nature than those in previous albums, and with a greater depth and emotion than is found on the songs of most other albums.
Amongst the very best of SOFAD:
In Your Room (one of the greatest songs ever recorded)
Walking in My Shoes
Higher Love
Mercy in You
One Caress
Judas
This album is, in my opinion, one of the 3 greatest ever done by Depeche Mode - along with Violator and Black Celebration.
SOFAD is an audio journey most definitely worth taking - and returning to time and again, no doubt.
Yes, this one's great too........2006-12-09
I tend to find that the people who don't like "Songs of Faith and Devotion" are in two categories: Electronic purists who are so set in their ways that DM doing a guitar based album is a travesty (although hints started with "Black Celebration"), people wrongfully accusing it as an attempt to stay relevant (followed "Violator" and most of these are songs that Pearl Jam and the likes never have & never will make). But beyond that, there isn't one single bad song on "SoFaD." It may take awhile to digest it though, I'll admit. It took awhile for me to get used to the "noir-gospel" of "Condemnation," but I now really love that song. The lyrics are not really embarassing, and "I Feel You" is one of Depeche Mode's greatest songs ever (that says a lot!). Another classic is the six-and-a-half minute "In Your Room." Martin Gore sings on a couple of slower-toned, orchestral tracks like the dark yet beautiful "Judas" and string-heavy "One Caress." Sure, the single version of "Walking in My Shoes" is better than the one on here, but that doesn't make this "not worth owning." Not only this, every song still sounds like Depeche Mode. The songs I didn't mention are still wonderful too, and I particularly like the punch of "Get Right with Me" and the pseudo-industrial "Rush." Gore is usually great when he writes the type of dark lyrics on this album, part of its greatness.
In short: It's worth owning because it's a wonderful band at a creative peak, it's cheap, and even if the cover art is lackluster the music will help you overlook that (but I think that's why some people presumptively dismiss & mock the album). Hey, the first two albums have my favorite cover art and are my least favorites that the group did.
Mercy in You.......2006-12-07
This album is excellent, lots of good reviews so mine will be about one song from the album, Mercy in You. This song for me, has been what DM has meant to me over the years.
I would lose my way again
Be led hopelessly astray again
Just so I could pray again
For the mercy in you
These words are such a strong statement to do wrong, to do bad, if only for the forgiveness that is offered, to return again. This has been for me a taunting of religion, of sin and how foolish and at the same time rewarding the whole process is. Alot of events in the lives of DM happened after this album and Ultra was released with the abscense of Wilder.

Absolutely beautiful! .......2007-05-15
The first time I heard Daniel O'Donnell was on PBS. I will never forget it because I ususally never stop on that particular channel. But there is something about his voice - and his stage presence - and the songs he was singing that made him unforgettable to me.
This is a magnificent collection of inspirational songs that Daniel O'Donnel has sung so beautifully. "You Raise Me Up", "Surely The Presence of the Lord", "Here I Am Lord", are my mentionable favorites.

This transaction went smoothly and the product was in perfect shape.
I DO WISH I HAD KNOWN THIS WAS JUST A TAPING OF A LIVE PROGRAM. I WAS EXPECTING JUST DANIEL'S MUSIC, NOT TALKING AND CLAPPING BETWEEN PIECES.

An Irish ambassador to the world!.......2005-12-11
American audiences probably - and unfortunately - didn't get their intro to Irish singer Daniel O'Donnell until Public Television aired his 2003 concert of this two-disc, 24-song collection. And what a debt we owe PBS. A truly phenomenal singer, O'Donnell has blessed just about every field of music - pop, rock, country, inspirational - with an incredible punch. This collection is an interdenominational collection of inspirational music that O'Donnell treated a packed audience in a live show in his native country. There's little, if anything, that O'Donnell can't do to his selected songs in this jewel of a CD - from standards like "Nearer My God to Thee," "I Saw the Light," "Sweet Queen of Peace" and "Let There Be Peace" to crossover inspirational pop hits like "Wind Beneath My Wings," "Put Your Hand in the Hand" and "One Day at a Time." As an Irish Catholic, O'Donnell unleashes one of the most inspirational versions of "Make Me a Channel of Your Peace" (The Prayer of St. Francis). As if he needed it, O'Donnell has terrific backup from a gifted group of singers and musicians. In particular, Irish singer Mary Duff joins O'Donnell in "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" and goes solo in an upbeat rendition of "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands" and which gets the audience stirred up enough to join in. O'Donnell does the Irish proud, and if the United Nations ever needs an Irish ambassador to the world, it ought to check out O'Donnell. For us in the audience, though, O'Donnell gives us the treat of an incredible range of talent and entertainment, and this collection in particular has little - if anything - to criticize. An amazing, wonderful talent!

The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26
I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.
Please buy it.
A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

I own every Isaacs CD on the market. And this newest one is way up there on my list. Beckys version of "I Surrender All" she sings it with such feeling. I've met this wonderful group and my band had the opportunity to open for them. Its just so awesome to know they are for real. I strongly recommend this, esp if you love older gospel tunes. They've truly made the old songs their own. Keep it up guys!! God Bless

Many know Georgia Stitt as the vocal coach on the primetime reality series Grease: You're the One That I Want, but she has a thriving "side" business as an arranger, conductor, musical director, pianist and songwriter. It's the latter aspect that gets showcased on this album, in which Stitt's songs are performed by a collection of topnotch Broadway pros. The overall mood is one of thoughtful longing, emphasized by largely acoustic arrangements, mostly by either Stitt or her husband, Jason Robert Brown (The Last 5 Years). While perfectly crafted, the songs quickly blend into each other; their share a certain polite, "beige" elegance that also lacks inner fire. This makes the tracks breaking from that mold stand out even more: Jenn Colella brings a nice twang to the rollicking "Big Wings;" Faith Prince sounds positively delighted on the jaunty "I Get to Show You the Ocean;" and Kelli O'Hara demonstrates why she's one of the finest interpreters on Broadway on the sepia-tinted "Perfect Summer," which sometimes sounds like something cut from a 1940s musical (Stitt herself plays the piano on all three songs). --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Description
THIS ORDINARY THURSDAY, the extraordinary debut album of songs by Georgia Stitt, features vocals by some of Broadway's brightest stars, including Sara Ramirez (Tony Award-winner for Spamalot, currently starring on TV's Grey's Anatomy), Faith Prince (Tony Award-winner for Guys and Dolls), Susan Egan (Broadway's original Belle in Beauty and the Beast), Kelli O'Hara (Tony nominee for Pajama Game, opposite Harry Connick), and Matthew Morrison (Tony nominee for Light in the Piazza). Seen by millions each week as the vocal coach on NBC's primetime series, GREASE: You're the One That I Want, Georgia Stitt is known as a composer-lyricist with a style and sensibility all her own. Clever, sophisticated, and memorably melodic, THIS ORDINARY THURSDAY is one debut album not to be missed.

Georgia Stitt has something to say.......2007-05-15
Georgia Stitt has something to say. She speaks with sincerity through lyrics that notice the details of living and find substance. Her music is equally honest in it varied flavors from artsong ("These Two") to my least favorite--country ("Big Wings") to fun show tune ("I Get to Show you the Ocean") to power ballad ("The Holy Secret" and the stunning "I Lay my Armor Down") to the intimate, more sophisticated than pop, title track. No matter the flavor of the music, the unifying factor is a fresh look at the little gestures of living that unintentionally expose a bit of truth.
One of the brightest new voices in the American theater........2007-05-13
Bravo to the folks at PS Classics for issuing this splendid disc dedicated to songs by this terrefic young writer....you could not ask for better performances.
A Triumph!.......2007-05-13
If you're looking for music from one of the most influential up and coming Broadway writers of our time, with people who actually know what they're doing behind the microphone, then you've found your match with this album!
Through this whirlwind roller coaster ride of emotions, we get to know a little more about Ms. Stitt, and are all the better for it. She's got some of Broadway's brightest stars singing her emotionally wrought lyrics and soulfully moving themes. Between her and her husband, we may be looking at our generation's Comden and Green!
The highlight of this CD, for me, is Faith Prince's rendition of "I Get to Show You the Ocean." If you've any love of Broadway at all, BUY THIS CD!
Gorgeous!.......2007-04-26
I'm SO glad I bought this CD! Each beautiful song is a mini One Act play, with glorious and surprising melodies, and sophisticated, engaging lyrics. Oh, and the voices! Kelli O'Hara singing "Perfect Summer" is simply gorgeous, and Faith Prince's light-hearted and touching vocal on "I Get To Show You The Ocean" is perfection. Every song is a winner!

Without Doubt - Their Finest Moment.......2007-06-29
With this release DM finally became the truly sleazy sweaty rock band they always secretly desired to be (or at least frontman Dave Gahan did). For the followers of DM through their career this album certinaly came as a shock - it certainly did to me. But when you work through the initial resistance this album shows itself to be a truly memorable achievement. Whilst Violator saw DM master their skills and cement their position as the masters of electronic rock, this recording showed them pushing the envelope. From I Feel You's screeching guitars and pulsating energy (check out the Afghan Swamp Surgery mix on Maxi CD for a super treatment of this song!) to the stripped back Condemnation Depeche Mode moved into areas no one would have thought. Apparently recorded under extremely tense conditions with addictions and works stresses - the tensions seem to emanate from the album. The production on a DM album has never been so good and Alan Wilder's departure is sorely missed. This album clearly showed the manic obsession the guy applied to all DM productions. Every track is different and every track shows a different side to the band from the classic synth warmth of songs such as Walking in My Shoes and Higher Love to the electro frenzy of Rush and then to the soulful Get Right With Me and the super sexy In Your Room. This album shimmers, rocks, grinds and crunches. As a long time fan and owner of all their CDs - this is the CD I always come back to me when I want to release some tension. A True Classic.
Remastered Editon sounds even better - but look for the version with the documentary for some revelaing insight into the making of the album.
Huge disappointment.......2007-02-06
First off, the main reason I have purchased all of these Depeche Mode special editions is primarily for the 5.1 surround mix. Being a huge fan of Depeche Mode and surround-sound music in general, the idea of remixing their music for this format seemed like a natural fit. And one listen to Violator proves that point beyond a reasonable doubt. I also appreciate the care that went into producing each set - with bonus tracks, videos, documentaries, etc. These definitely feel like truly special editions, unlike other sets where you get one disc with a cd on one side and dvd on the other. As a side note, I have to agree with Bob from LA - there is NO reason the bonus tracks should only be available on the DVD, but I wouldn't go so far as to suggest a multi-channel, dvd-only edition.
Anyway, getting back to SOFAD, my primary complaint with this set is that the 5.1 mix is completely off. After being blown away by the surround mixes for Violator, MFTM, and Some Great Reward, I had high expectations for this set as SOFAD is my favorite DM album. Unfortunately, whoever worked on this project (Alan Wilder?) either rushed through the project or was asleep at the mixing board. The bass on the opening track itself should be very deep and present, but instead, the whole song seems to get lost in the top end with very little midrange or subwoofer presence. There isn't much difference in the remaining tracks, again as if the idea of surround was an afterthought. I could go on, but this is sadly just a lost opportunity. Let's hope they don't miss the boat with Ultra.
What happened here? Are they deaf?.......2007-01-25
Gotta say, this was my first DM CD back in the 90's (yes, I was a late bloomer for DM I'm afraid). However, I fell in love with the original mix and after listening to this new 'revision', the mix has suffered greatly. Honestly one of the worst 5.1 mixes I've ever heard. I love the idea of surround mixing and listening to music in surround (Queen's 'A Night at the Opera' is the best example), but right from the get go "I feel you" had to be one of the worst excuses for 5.1 mixing I've ever heard. You would think for a band that really embraced technology they would have done a better job here, but no such luck I'm afraid. I am going to see if I can return this. Shame on you DM, you really let me down here.
There are remaster problems.......2007-01-05
I just got the new edition last night and there are some interesting problems with the remaster of the dvd. I was able to do a quick comparison of cd remaster and the dvd, the dvd stereo remaster is basically a new mix, I don't have 5.1 so I listened to the stereo version only. I have a few other cd's that are remastered and I have a dvd version as well of the same album so I know what it should sound like and this dvd doesn't cut the mustard. The dvd stereo version should basically have a little more "pop" and presence compared to the cd remaster and it doesn't. The cd remaster seems good to me from what little I have listened to it. I did a comparison with the original cd and the stereo image and seperation are night and day between the two.
What really surprises me is Alan Wilder was executive producer on this reissue and seems to have signed off on this dvd remaster and quite frankly I don't know why. I have an excellent pair of speakers but they are not anything like good studio monitors and I would have thought he would have picked up on this.
As I mentioned earlier I have a cd remastered version of the Yes Fragile album and a dvd 5.1 version. I have listened to the stereo version of the dvd and it is the same exact mix as the cd except that, due to the higher resolution there is more pop to it and slightly better stereo image. But they are almost identical and it is hard to tell the difference, and with this reissue of Depeche Mode you can definitely tell them apart. Something is not right.
LACKLUSTER REMASTER + MIXED FORMATS = A BAD IDEA.......2006-11-23
This is one of the rare times that Rhino began with the best of intentions, then just executed terribly. Here's how Rhino blew it on the entire Depeche Mode multi-title CD/DVD remaster series:
1.) The remastering is heartbreakingly sub-par. I'll get to that.
2.) They relegated the great bonus audio tracks & remixes to the DVD.
3.) The 5.1 mixes and the video clips should have been released on dedicated DVD editions.
Let's start with the remastering.
You (real) DM fans who have all the Singles Boxes; go to Box #5, pull out the "#28 Walking In My Shoes" disc, and cue up Track 1. Now, compare it to the Rhino "remastered" Faith track... BIG DIFFERENCE, huh? The Faith version has greatly diminished clarity, like a heavy towel had been draped over the speakers.
Try the same A/B test again against another Box#5 single, "#27 I Feel You", track 1. You'll see that the audio dichotomy I'm describing here is not trivial.
Yes, the remastered audio on the CD in the new Faith set is better than the original 1993 single-disc CD release. But, after you perform the A/B tests described above, you know the audio is not what it COULD have been, and probably now, never will be. That's a bitter pill to have to swallow for the Depeche fan, especially after laying out $20+ for this set.
I've also A/B'd tracks from all five of the Rhino 2006 sets against their respective Singles-Box counterpart. I found the same sub-standard remastering. What a terrible disappointment.
Let's move on to the DVD included in each set, and the decision to locate the remix and additional audio tracks there rather than the CD.
Simply: CD audio BELONGS in dedicated CD format. Multi-Channel audio/video BELONG in dedicated multi-channel formats. No matter what the marketing morons say, mixing the two plays to such a small portion of the market, it's just idiotic. In the case of the DVD's in the DM/Rhino sets, here are two perfect examples why:
How many DM fans don't have home surround sound systems, or DVD-capable units in their cars, and are ridiculously limited to listening to the bonus audio material on their home DVD player thru their television? How many DM fans don't appreciate not being able to Fair Use the DVD audio tracks on their portable audio devices?
Also, the DVD in each set consists of three components: A 30-minute video documentary, the 5.1 mix of the album, and the bonus tracks/remixes. Say you don't have a surround system and can't utilize the 5.1 album. So, ask yourself: How many times will you want to repeat the video? How many times would you like to listen to those great bonus tracks? I doubt many people would answer to a 1:1 ratio between the two! Me? Probably 1:100+!
Rhino should have followed their own Elvis Costello remaster-series model, and produced each of these albums as a two disc, standard CD-audio set. Then, Rhino could have released the multi-channel and video content as separate DVD retail versions, for those who desire to purchase, and are equipped to play them.
At the very least, however, Rhino seems to have learned its lesson from the Talking Heads Dual-Disc remaster-series fiasco and eschewed that horrid format for the Depeche releases (go to any TH DD-title on Amazon and scan thru the reviews if you want to read some REALLY p'd-off consumers, including myself!).
As an aside: I also checked the recent UK single-disc remasters against the Rhino CD's. As another reviewer noted below, the audio is identical to both versions.
